This isn’t formaldehyde.

This shit here is a plasdoform, which means that it’s the molecular version of a Twinkie, where formaldehyde is the cream filling in a bigger molecule.

It hits different because it absorbs into tissue at a more fixed rate without walling off capillaries, that is to say that the yellow cake keeps the filling from leaking out too fast. It’s also built to be biocidal, so the Twinkie has uh… knives. For attacking contaminants.

Also, it’s great for getting past protein-based staining, so it’s a big deal in mortuary work to get rid of things like jaundice in dead tissue.

As for why I cleared out the morgue’s spare inventory, that’s a fun secret for later.

A noble gas is an element with a full valence electron shells without being an ion. They are, symbolically, found on the right column of the periodic table.

Atoms seek stability, amidst multiple competing forces. Valence electron shells are one of them. When a shell is completely empty or full of electrons in orbit, the atom is at rest. When it has a small number of electrons in its valence shell, it aggressively seeks to lose them. When it has a large number, it aggressively attracts electrons. Both of these processes release energy. Comparatively, when an atom has a completely full/empty valence electron shell, it takes energy to add or remove electrons.

When an atom has a different number of electrons than protons (ions), it has an electric charge, attracting other ions with an opposite charge and repelling those with the same charge.

This combination of electromagnetism and shell stability leads to reactions between elements.

Noble gasses are atoms whose number of protons perfectly matches full valence electron shells. That means they are in an extremely stable situation without becoming an ion. As a result, these elements do not react without high levels of energy forcing them into strange positions. Because the individual atoms do not form molecules, they assume a gaseous state at low energy levels, lacking structure between atoms.

Noble gasses, while not reactive to most chemical interactions, are still subject to nuclear forces. Once the number of protons/neutrons is high enough, the noble gas is no longer stable, instead becoming radioactive and decaying into other, smaller elements. Radon is known to be especially dangerous, as it is radioactive, but its nature as a noble gas means that it is extremely easy to fail to notice. But the other, lighter, noble gasses are not radioactive and are extremely safe.

This is all information taught in high school level chemistry, or low college level chemistry. It is not unusual for adults to know in the twenty first century, but it wouldn't be unusual if they did not know or forgot, as most individuals do not consider chemistry in their day to day lives. The average adult is likely to have enough chemistry knowledge to know what a noble gas is, and therefore understand this pun.

So, a changeling is sort of like a p-zombie?

(For the unaware, “p-zombie” stands for “philosophical zombie”. It’s a thought experiment in philosophy that describes a being that’s outwardly identical to a human, but does not have a consciousness; that is, a p-zombie does not think whatsoever, although it looks like it thinks to an outsider observer. There’s a whole wikipedia article on it that explains the concept better than I can!)

They don't exactly think, as in "I dont want this" "I like that". But, Changelings do have a form of "Consciousness". It's just that their consciousness is more like a series of commands or tasks than actual formulated thoughts.

Timmy's Changeling has a very advanced "consciousness". It can predict future actions and reroute its tasks to pick only the best options for its situation.

We fill their heads with static to ensure that the Changeling does not form thoughts about anything. Thoughts leads to opinions, and opinions leads to incorrect actions. A proper Changeling should have more static in their mind than a TV screen on a defunct channel!
