I'm obligated to do this for... New hires. Here's everything which is need-know about the Contractors and some notable non-battlefield staff.

Alright first up, the Contractors, the people we've hired to fight the turf-war.

Offense:

The Recon (he/him) A calico house cat from Scotland, their owner uplifted them in a bid to compete in cat shows of fellow uplifted cats. When it was obvious that his lust for blood and annoying attitude was too much, his owner instead trained him in firearms and flying to become a hired gun.

The Chemist (he/him) He had always been an odd fellow. Having a tenure for a university in Russia, doing various under-the-table experiments and backalley chemistry projects, most of which were homicidal. When he needed money for said experiments, he decided to become a Contractor.

The Demolisher (she/her) A quite large and friendly(ish) woman from Mesoamerica, she was conscripted some time ago into the military, then afterwards she used her demolition skills for a more productive purpose. After then getting replaced by robots, she gone and started blowing up production lines and robots left and right. We convinced her to take out her rage for a pay check.

The Charger (he/him) A strange German man who seems almost hesitant about murder. From what we can tell, he invented his jets some years ago in a weird jousting competition hosted by him. After it got bloody, he decided his deadly skill in swords could be sold…

Defense:

The Spark (she/them) Coming from Japan, we observed she had a flagrant disregard for other's safety if it fed her curiosity, or for her need to rant about electricity in others' ears. Despite quite a few of our staff objecting to having her hired, we decided the noise was worth it for a skilled contractor and someone who could fix the office's lights.

The Exosuit (she/her) A quite lithe woman from Australia, she had been a computer scientist in college. Needing to do manual labor for money, she got her hands on an exosuit, but eventually that wasn't enough. Calling up one of her more physically minded friends, she slowly modified it into a killing machine. We also note she has a smoking problem…

The Technician (they/them) Always the overachiever, they graduated from all branches of engineering in a university from Britain. Then they got drafted into the war, and used those PHDs for military research and military hardware. After it ended, and with a new taste for blood, they decided to hire their miracle skills out. We won't judge their financial decisions.

The Caretaker (they/them) Alright, we honestly don't have much of an idea where this guy came from. Tracking the breeds of their animals, their clothing, and their equipment, they seem to be from the Exclusion Zone in Ukraine. The few times they speak, it's through a voice changer and either emotionless or highly passionate. We do know they spend their paycheck on their animals though.

Support:

The Hunter (he/him) We've received multiple complaints about this guy. From the east coast of the US, he was a pro airsoft player. Eventually, he got bored and, after getting banned from tournaments for his modified rifle and his massive ego, hired himself into actual warfare. No, we're not firing him.

The Nurse (she/her) From somewhere in the Caribbean, she became a pretty successful nurse, even when she had to take a week off for a drug trip. After losing her license through a count of murder, multiple counts of drug dealing, and a lot of drug (ab)use; she got into mercenary work despite seemingly having a genuine heart.

The Trickster (they/them) From the few bits and pieces of history we can gather, this enigma seems to previously be a dancer from Canada. At least, we think, could be another of their tricks. Anyways, their skills in trickery and espionage seems to be unmatched. As their ingenuity, if their cloak and disguise tools are made by them.

The Vandal (he/them) From the west-coast of the US, of our operating territory, comes this delinquent. His rage at the system landed him with a life sentence in prison. Though, our headhunters saw potential in him. We decided it was worth making various deals so as long as he's still with us, he isn't being hunted by the cops. Noted for his drinking problem, though, it seems he's mindful of not being drunk on the battlefield.

Special:

The CEO (he/him) CEO of an oil company allied with us, small time politician, and the 37th recipient of the miracle body replacement. His faux-adventurous attitude is only superseded by his paranoia about how much money he has. While his consciousness is transferable, your paycheck is getting docked each time he has to replace his body.

Now as for our non-combatants, well, you might see some of them in the background. Please don't disturb them as either they're doing important work or on break.

Starting off with ones hired by ORG and PNK we have

The Hack (they/them) A small-time IT expert and cybercriminal in the newly made frontier of the internet. After they got into hot-water with too many international entities, we bailed them out in exchange for working with us. Got to cover all our bases (and we desperately needed someone who could navigate our server room).

The Janitor (he/him) A quiet man without too much to say, drifting through the building cleaning up any mess that appears. He previously worked as a hired gun in the 60s, but those days are long passed and asking him about it gets nothing besides side-eye and a light grunt.

The Secretary (she/her) A women hired by the CEO for his busy work and bookkeeping, she's barely out of college and already doing such big work. She seems always overworked and underpaid, relinquishing the moments of break she has. Also seems to like me a lot for no particular reason.

The Courier (she/them) A crafty women, while quite young she is very good at what she does. Ie: Piloting drones for deliveries, mail, and notes from upper management. She's really quite jovial, gratingly so. While they haven't met yet, I expect her to be good friends with the Spark.

Now for the ones on our payroll, we have

The Public Announcer (PA) (they/them) I'm not allowed to say much here. They're the one over the speakers managing the rounds and matches, announcing the state of the battlefield to our Contractors. (Though, off the record, I kind of hate them, and love them? I've said, too much so, will not be elaborating)

The Proxy (he/him) That's me, hey there. I act as a middlemen and body guard for the PA, doing their wetwork and speaking directly to the Contractors. Off the books, I'm probably the most reasonable one here, even if that includes liking my (mildly homicidal) boss. Please… Don't let that get on record.

The Therapist (one of: he/him, she/her, they/them) The company hired them more as a kind gesture then anything else really. This varying-gendered person does seem to be genuinely qualified and reasonably successful. Though, they seem overly unprofessional with our Contractors, and do a large amount of check ins with them without reason.

The Dispatcher (any/all) Our quartermaster, tactician, strategist, and middle manager. She's quite an old hat in the business, having been in the parent companies to ours and even being the previous PA, til [REDACTED] took over. Nowadays they mostly drift around the office making small talk and constantly organizing and planning stuff.

The Driver (he/him) Ah yes, the guy who picked you up. He's the one who transports important personnel and important packages with his quite fancy car (it's bulletproof too, don't ask me how i know). He's an ex-Mafia actually, but then he decided to look for bigger things...

Oh, and finally, there's someone I need to caution you against

The Eye (???/???) Alright let me go off the books one more time, has anyone else seen this guy? Faded green suit, suitcase, fedora? I swear I've seen them watching the battlefield from a distance but besides faded Polaroids I haven't seen anyone mention them…

(ooc) Here's all of them, plus a little fun fact about each person :D

Ace: He/Him, transmasc & gay

He still has the secret he has canonically, however because it's a much more positive environment in this AU, people close to him are helping to recover.

Arturo: He/They, transmasc & bisexual

Unlike canon, he has quite long hair. He's not the type to style it usually.. but Veronika is, so whenever they're together, he ends up with a random new hairstyle.

Arei: She/They, feminine presenting genderfluid & lesbian

Despite the lack of killing game, the scene in the infirmary between her and Eden still happened, just for a different reason. Because she doesn't die, she's able to improve herself into a much better person.. and yes, she's best friends with Eden.

Can't say their name, but the ultimate chemist: Tells people he/him, but secretly finds she/her or they/them more comfortable. Questioning their identity, she's actually transfem but they've not figured that out yet. (Whit thinks he knows.)

They see Nico as a sibling, and they see her the same way. Because she doesn't have her older brother (who they remember in this au), and Nico's family hated them, they kind of became unofficial siblings to support each other. Hu is a bit like the mom.

David: Any pronouns, transfem & nonbinary

Even though there's no trials, she still had the scene from the chapter 2 trial, just not in that environment. He wasn't manipulating people as there was no reason for him to there, but it turns out she has very bad mental health. Hu and Xander help her a lot, and even Arei sometimes, as he never manipulated her.

Eden: She/Her, transfem & lesbian

Eden always likes to hold events between everyone, especially the female cast, as she's a little scared of the men after Arturo still got mad and threatened her (in a different situation). In this au, they even managed to successfully make the cake, and after a talk with Whit about the subject, she's secretly excited to start inviting the ultimate chemist to her events.

Hu: She/Her, female & bisexual

Now that she's not under as much stress, Hu still likes to act as a parent to others. She's always there when people need help (but finds it very difficult to trust others sometimes). Also, multiple people from the cast deal with age regression*, so she loves to be there for them too.

* Xander, David, Teruko, the ultimate chemist, J, and Nico.

J: They/He, transmasc nonbinary & bisexual

After their identity was accidentally revealed (outside of the secret motive) and they realised how much they hate their birth name and being a girl, they came out as nonbinary & transmasc. Arei and Eden love trying to help in every way possible, even deliberately not inviting them to Eden's events.

Levi: Any pronouns, bigender, genderfluid & bisexual

Levi was always familiar with showing other people clothes, but during this au, they took up the hobby of making their own clothes. They looked a little silly at first, but overtime she became really good at it. She made something for everyone in the cast.

Min: She/Her, female & lesbian

Min is currently dating Teruko after she realised she experienced more than just friendship with her. Because they're in the academy they can't go out on dates, however they will watch movies, bake things, and often sleep in the same room.

Nico: They/Them, nonbinary, bi & asexual. Not particularly interested in a relationship but can experience romantic attraction. (They haven't canonically discovered neopronouns but they would love any themed around animals especially cats if they found out they existed.)

They carry a plush toy cat everywhere with them, even to simple events like lunch. They're canonically autistic in this au and it's comforting to them. Because of this they also experience other things related to it such as stimming and meltdowns, but with a bit of education to those unaware, it was happily accepted.

Rose: She/Her, transfem & lesbian

When Rose signed up to spend her life at Hope's Peak Academy as it was better than the outside world for her (that applies to everyone here !!), it meant she could break the contract that meant she couldn't have any of her own art. Now that she can call it all her own, she loves painting with Nico, and they're very close friends.

Teruko: She/Her, female & unlabelled sexuality

Despite the fact that she still has her bad luck, a lot of things have been put in place to try and assist her, and she's living a much happier life within the academy than she ever could've outside. Also, because there's no killing, she's best friends with Xander.

Veronika: She/They, transfem & pansexual

Just like Nico, Veronika is also canonically autistic (though she has low support needs, Nico has medium). She's very different to Nico, though, and both of them hate when they're seen as similar just because of their disabilities. Despite this, because they both end up spending so much time with Hu, she also sees them as a bit like family (though nowhere near as much as the ultimate chemist).

Whit: He/They, transmasc & bisexual

He's canonically dating the ultimate chemist, and after realising they aren't comfortable with their identity, he's the one helping them.

Xander: Any pronouns, genderfluid & bisexual

Because there's no killing game, he remembers his past in detail. She finds the difficult to deal with, but David is there to help them.

i have had this sitting in drafts for so long and now that i'm having some time to think about characters and headcanons here we go.

the Astronomer is in academia/a researcher, basically dedicating his whole career to making sure the planet doesn't die (it does). genuinely a soft guy who is in awe about all things space, although exhausted. huge fantasy nerd. married to the Captain because I (the fandom) said so. demiromantic ace.

the Captain is quite young and high-energy. commissioned the Starblade out of pre-existing ships as his pet project; everybody was shocked when this overambitious kid ended up getting his project off the ground and more than that, being right about everything. massively ADHD and silly, but he burns out fast. pan and married to the Astronomer

the Historian started out as a mechanical engineer for the Starblade, became one of Captain's most trusted colleagues. he knows the ship inside and out and documents everything. a nerd. transmasc because I said so. the most emotionally stable of them

the President is a sad wet cat of a man. became president due to his middle-ground-ness and likability? he makes stupid decisions sometimes but by god (i mean Alphan Jesus) does he try. confident except his leadership privileges are kind of revoked.

the Biologist is the sole owner of the Starblade's brain cell. competent. the voice of reason. that's her. Biologist x Counselor mayhaps because love wins

the Prophet started as an academic, got hit with some time telepathy stuff. started doing prophet stuff. the more I draw him the more gender he gets. probably non-binary honestly

the Diplomat is another politician on Alpha, President's most trusted associate and his official spokesperson. a jolly fella. a little too unreadable

the Opposition Leader also hi OP i see MCR on your blog and from one MCR fan to another i fully headcanon he did some killjoys-esque stuff in the Alphan wild before deciding "yeah screw it I have to try something else." broke some laws. did some politics. he's on the Starblade for some reason and he's making it everybody else's problem. bisexual.

the Chemist has an aura of melancholy. very contemplative and low-key. obsessive about solving things particularly the problem of liquid eternity. gets hit with survivor's guilt, anxiety, depression, diagnosed with 97 mental illnesses but not banned from the Starblade yet. he is sad. his gender is vague cloud of mist

the Counselor used to work for the Alphan government. met the Prophet some way or another and became one of his followers. lost her partner in the apocalypse. very kind. a vibe in a similar way as the Chemist. thinking some Counselor x Biologist because sapphics

TH-1 is another one of Captain's pet projects?? honestly not sure about his motivations and character (still figuring that out) but but I do think he didn't have ulterior motives and just got caught up in the very human need to have purpose and survive. guess he got what he wanted. chaotic neutral?? morally gray?? idk!! another case of he/him nonbinary because i'm pretty sure TH-1 transcends gender

the Preacher is a normal member of the crew?? who also happens to be close to the Prophet, well versed in ancient texts and funeral rites

This is Dr. James Crawford (previously Darrow). He is a transmasc/genderfluid doctor, historian, and chemist by education and private detective by occupation. He is a menace to the local police station thanks to his absolute unwillingness to do anything but civil disobedience but somehow he manages to get on the Detective Inspector’s (/Emil’s boss’) good side anyways, like the bastard he is. Surprisingly he is not that big on medical malpractice, I just wanted a reason to draw blood on his clothes :D

+ He/They, AMAB. A lively but easily upset chemist who has a hobby of knife and tool making. Very open about both his fart and scat fetishes, and often uses his knowledge of the others sharing these fetishes to tease them.

Kalon - 💉💊🔬

+ They/He, AMAB. A quiet, aloof biologist and oncology student. He's very quiet and shy about his fetishes, but often find themselves in awkward positions where someone's emissions (mainly Nigel's) has aroused them.

Diesel - 🦋🌌💙

+ He/Him, AFAB. Artsy transmasc, currently doing transition courses in college. He's kinda... Eh about his fetishes as he doesn't really consider it anything to be astonished by. Really enjoys messing himself.

Will - 🤬😒🧡

+ He/Him AMAB. Diesel's sisters mean bf. Is incredibly vocal about his disdain for their fetishes, which in turn makes them hotbox and torment him.

Everyone here is 18+ (they're all about 22-ish), any resemblance to real people is coincidence.... I think I've checked all my boxes! You'll have a story very soon :)

Here we go, then!

Let's start with transmasc / male Barok, and then Kazuma. I am very partial to this for two reasons, only one of which I'll really cover here: the man is 6'4" / 192cm. I am a trans man too, but I'm 5'0" (152cm) and have been since I was 12, the only way I'm getting taller is if testosterone works the miracle I refuse to actually let myself believe in. He is tall, I will never get to be tall, ergo he should be trans just like me.

It also makes sense, when you think about the 'heir and spare' idea that tends to crop up reasonably often in Western noble houses. Klint and Barok are a decade apart, and it's pretty textual with the little-darling-of-the-family line out of Albert that Barok was very much the spare. But it did take their parents a decade to produce a spare, and honestly, after that much time of trying? It did not matter what sex the baby was born as, that baby was going to be their spare.

(One can make the argument that maybe Barok was the only survivor of several children, but that's a bit grisly and I don't want to.)

If they had a girl baby on their hands, too bad, they're assigning that baby as male and they have their spare. I also know vaguely that some trans people from noble houses would often just 'go away for school' and then their parents' "niece / nephew" would move into their room, so the trans person in question would technically be living as their own cousin. Unsure how common that is, but it's equally possible.

I personally follow the "AMAB trans man" theory, because he's publicly known as Klint's brother: it would be reasonably difficult to pull off posing as his own family member. It also makes sense given the age gap between him and Klint.

We have concept art of him as an 11yo, and he's frankly tiny. He's like 3'9" as best, iirc. My two cousins were both taller than me at 11. It stretches belief a bit on how he could be so short at that age as a cis man, unless, of course, he's either trans or intersex. (Possibly both!)

After that, all you have to do is figure out how he ended up so stupid tall - actually taller than Klint - and the answer is pretty simple if you're willing to stretch your disbelief just a little: Albert or Sholmes. Albert's a smart guy, and it would make sense for the two trans men at university to end up rooming together. Sholmes, being a chemist, could also do this. I'm inclined towards the former if only because I genuinely can't see Barok and Sholmes more than barely tolerating each other, although if you read their relationship differently, the argument is pretty easily made.

So the people who would know Barok is trans are his parents (who would not let him be a cis girl regardless and very much have raised him as a cis man), Klint, whatever midwives were there at his birth, and either Albert or Sholmes.

Of them, Klint is the only one Barok is likely to deeply trust enough to actually talk about being trans in-depth with. His parents are steadfastly ignoring that he's trans, and this wouldn't exactly give them the best relationship, so when Barok has to deal with puberty he's not going to go to them, he's going to go to Klint.

Klint, being that he's Barok's guiding light for a good reason, probably handled this pretty well despite having absolutely no frame of reference for this. Definitely it only makes things worse when he dies, and the only person Barok might actually trust with knowing this about him is in Germany. Klint was, after all, guiding him in every way, as a prosecutor and as what a good, honourable man looks like.

It would also actually explain something that canon never addresses. Klint was either married very late in his life, or had the same fertility problems as his parents, for Iris, his firstborn, to be conceived when he was 33. However, Barok is a firm bachelor, even when at his age that would be Pretty Questionable for the heir to the van Zieks estate. Either his parents are dead (and thus can't force him to do anything), or they actually remembered he's trans and in order to give them an heir, would need to team up with someone who isn't a cis girl or fellow trans man. Given that Victorian times were iffy on the whole homosexuality thing, I'm pretty sure it would take A While for his parents to find a trans girl of some kind for him, which explains that particular issue nicely.

As for Kazuma... trans Kazuma is actually quite a popular headcanon! It ranges from "Genshin wanted a son to carry Karuma" to "Karuma told him he's a boy so he cut his hair off with it and scared the daylights out of Yuujin", but given how much emphasis Kazuma puts on being his father's son? Yeah, that emphasis absolutely can have a trans reading on it without any issue at all.

It also dovetails nicely into a niche we don't see very often. We see a lot of "son avenging his father", but we actually very rarely see "child of any gender avenging their mother". I'm sure you've seen me go at it with Kazzy over on the RP blogs about his relationship with his mother, which is actually meta I've had longer than he's been around. Kazuma does an awful lot of Refusing To Acknowledge His Mom for someone who was raised solely by her for seven years and then buried her at fourteen. He last saw Genshin when he was eight. I remember maybe a half-dozen things from when I was eight, and he avoids that.

Of course he's going to put more emphasis on his father, especially if he's trans. Because if people really look into his mother, they might go "huh, he looks an awful lot like her too", and that might lead to them figuring out he's trans, so better accentuate his resemblance to his father, so no one can forget he's a son of the Asogi clan.

(I also do this. I'm the spitting image of my paternal grandmother, and I aggressively make sure everyone knows I'm my father's child. The more I look like him, the more masculine I get to be. He's a very masculine man who tends to brute-force his way through things. If I'm just taking after my dad, then no one can tell me to be more delicate, because clearly I'm genetically inclined to brute-force everything.)

Of course, it does help Kazuma significantly that he's got Yuujin backing him, and also sort of that both of his parents are dead. If his mother didn't get out much (likely not, given that she died of grief-related anxiety), then Kazuma can very easily enter secondary school as a male student by firstly just forging his mother's signature, groaning and explaining they screwed up his birth certificate and his mother meant to fix it but he has no idea where the paperwork is following her death, and Yuujin standing there just agreeing and going "yep I'm a doctor and he's definitely male".

It's possible the only people who know, when canon starts, are Yuujin and maybe Susato. On one hand, she's observant enough she'd probably catch him out 'round that time of the month. On the other hand, Kazuma is very very good at lying to her, and she was pretty young when he moved in with them. I'm reasonably sure Yuujin knows, even if he'd never met Kazuma before he returned to Japan.

It's very possible Ryunosuke had no idea he was trans, either. He probably would've found out on the SS Burya - fifty day sailing, and they were sharing a room - but whether or not that's true really depends on whether or not we think Kazuma trusted him enough to tell him that his parents were dead. If Ryu knew about one, it makes sense he'd know about the other. If Kazuma actively hid one, he'd be more than capable of hiding the other.

There is also one other argument that points to Kazuma being trans: his lack of scruff. We know he wasn't taking care of himself very much during the entirety of DGS2: his 3d model is literally modified to have noticeably lost weight, and it's visible in his mugshot. His hair is a lot messier, and probably only didn't knot to death because he has very straight, thick hair. (I had a brief highschool relationship with a nice Japanese lass, and her hair looked a lot like his. Couldn't have knotted if she tried.) So where's his scruff and facial hair? Simple. He's trans.

It also actually lends to the trust established between Kazuma and Barok during the MD era. (Do not get me started on the trust between them in that era. You think this is a long post? I will show you long if you ask me about that.) Barok, being trans himself, would have noticed Kazuma being trans in about five seconds. Given Kazuma's desk (ever the proof of everything between them), he's more than observant enough to have picked up on it, and supplied him with the resources he'd need to continue being stealth.

It's very possible, then, that during this era, Albert / Sholmes was supplying Kazuma's testosterone alongside Barok's. I'm not going to make the claim that testosterone makes you angrier (it does not do that), but when your hormones are in flux you can be a little unpredictable just while you adjust. I've experienced this every time I had to stop or start my old birth control abruptly, and it eases off, but it can definitely be a thing.

So if Albert was the one supplying his T, and he first had the chance to do Kazuma's bloodwork right before 2-3, while it doesn't explain the entirety of 2-4/5, it does explain one thing that bothers me quite a bit: seeing his father and immediately recovering completely from his incredibly major concussion.

Shake him up enough through storebought chemicals, put him through a very harrowing trial that includes the man giving him his T and easing his dysphoria (that he likely can't entirely identify, I very much doubt MD actually knows he's not cis, that would require explaining reproduction to him and I cannot see Barok ever willingly doing that), and then hand him back his father that he's been trying so hard to emulate... yeah, that's enough of a combo shot I can see it.

Of course, this brings us to this: if Kazuma and Barok are both trans, and modelled how to be men properly off of Klint and Genshin, two incredibly flawed and dead men; and canon already sets up that they are now going to learn instead from each other, and build something less rotten to the core together... does it not make sense, then, that they're going to learn how to be men on their own merits together?

Regardless of the flavour of their relationship, the fact is that Barok actually took Kazuma back after Kazuma tried to have him executed. It says a lot about the two of them that he did, but if Kazuma knew he was trans (and he very well might!), then of course there's still going to be that trust of the fact only one man in England knows the other's trans, and it's them. They have to learn how to be lawyers, and men, from each other instead of the flawed role models they had.

And one last point that really drives it home: Kazuma and Barok were both Ace Attorney Weirdgirls before they were lawyers. Kazuma did it in 1-1 for Ryu, and Barok is strongly implied to having been Klint's Weirdgirl during the Professor killings and likely for quite a bit before. But now, they're both prosecutors. They get to graduate from being weirdgirls and holding onto that with both hands even though it stopped being true years ago, to being lawyers, and figuring out what that means.

Which, really, is a very trans-coded narrative to me. I was a little girl before I was very abruptly a man, so I can see my own journey in theirs. They, too, were weirdgirls before they very abruptly were lawyers and men, given no time to really make the transition, but now they get to blossom and figure out what life is like with that part of them firmly in the past.

There's actually nothing in canon that says they can't be trans. Neither of them have confirmed children and at least one partner. We only have one concept art of each of them where we can see the majority of their chests without most of their clothes: it's very possible in his Casual Angsting Clothes, Barok is still wearing a corset (as it would go under that shirt), and Kazuma just has a small bust that can pass for masculine pectorals. (Also possible at the right angle. I have done this myself.)

Short of actual shirtless pictures, you can't say they're not. Their character arcs very much can look like allegories for being trans. And crucially, both of them exist in situations where they could absolutely get away with being trans, even given the time period, and so clearly there's a pretty good chance.

Anyway, that was my thoughts: I hope you like, and that this inspires some thoughts in you!

aside from me having no idea how someone would go through hrt in victorian england it could make sense. it could also add to his relationship with his bro. bc like. what if klint was just like really accepting and helped him transition young. and helped him keep it a secret and stuff. which made losing him even harder bc he lost the one person who truly accepted him.
