13 Fun Summer Rehearsal Dinner Ideas
Tumblr media
Your rehearsal dinner will set the tone for your wedding weekend, and choosing an unexpected activity, location, or menu is a sure way to get your guests into the celebratory spirit! For most people, summer is about getting outdoors, being active, and hanging out with friends. So, we think it’s only fitting your summer rehearsal dinner have one, if not all, of those elements! There are countless ways to get your wedding weekend started, but here are 13 of our all-time favorite summer rehearsal dinner ideas that would be perfect for any style, any budget, and any size crowd!
Tumblr media
OUTDOOR BARBEQUE
Is there a more classic combination than summer and barbeque? We don’t think so! That’s why an outdoor barbeque continues to be a favorite summer rehearsal dinner idea for low-key couples, families on a budget, or anyone who simply loves to eat BBQ. Set up some picnic tables in your backyard or in a park, add pretty centerpieces, simple place settings, and some lighting if it will be a nighttime dinner — think cafe lights strung through the trees or candles on every table. You can either cater food from your favorite BBQ joint or have someone work the grill. Add some lawn games or other activities to give your guests a reason to get up and mingle, and you’re all set for a night of classic summer fun!
Tumblr media
TACOS & TEQUILA
Maybe it’s our Texas roots showing — or maybe it’s just that everyone loves tacos — but if there is something that screams summer more than an outdoor barbeque, it’s a fiesta with tacos and tequila! It’s one of the simplest yet most delicious meals with hundreds of different variations that can satisfy even the pickiest eaters. For a rehearsal dinner with more than 15-20 people, hiring a food truck is the way to go. It gives people options without putting the burden of cooking for a large group on anyone in the group. If you’re expecting a smaller crowd, though, we love the idea of a make-your-own taco buffet with all the fixing, chips, salsa, and queso. Rent a margarita machine for the night, and you’ve got yourself a fiesta!
Tumblr media
ICE CREAM SOCIAL
An ice cream social has to be the sweetest (pun intended!) summer rehearsal dinner idea we’ve heard! Not only will it help guests beat the heat, but it’s a totally unexpected treat that everyone will love. Grab a few pints of your favorite flavors, make your own ice cream at home, or hire an ice cream truck for the night! Then create a build-your-own bar with candy, sprinkles, fresh fruit, chocolate sauce, caramel, and maybe some salty items for guests who love the sweet-salty combo. If you want to take it to the next level for your adult guests, set up an adult milkshake and float station where they can add their choice of liquor.
Tumblr media
CAMP-INSPIRED PICNIC IN THE PARK
A picnic in the park is always a fun, super casual idea, but we love the idea of adding a theme to make it extra special for a rehearsal dinner. Because it is summer, you can’t go wrong with a camp theme that allows guests to feel one with nature and bring back some of those nostalgic summer camp days. Lay down blankets and pillows in the grass, set up small boho-inspired tents or umbrellas so guests can get some shade, and provide lots of cold beverages. You could even plan a few group games, like horseshoes or charades, to help guests get to know each other.
Tumblr media
SEAFOOD BOIL ON THE BEACH
Shrimp, clams, sausage, potatoes, corn, sun, sand…yes to all of the above! If you live near a beach or are having a destination beach wedding, there’s no better way to get your guests into the spirit than with a seafood boil. Check your area for companies who provide all-inclusive services to set up, cook, and clean up to make your life easy. Or make it a multi-hour event with friends or family who know how to boil seafood and invite the rest of your guests to join when it’s time to eat. Just be sure to let them know to wear casual attire that they don’t mind getting a little messy. Check the beach rules to see if you can have a bonfire and, if you can, you should definitely end the evening with s’mores.
Tumblr media
YACHT COCKTAIL PARTY
If you’re fortunate enough to have access to a yacht, why not make use of it for your summer rehearsal dinner? On your invitations, ask guests to dress in comfortable but nice attire and set sail a few hours before sunset. This will give you and your guests time to mingle, enjoy delicious cocktails, and watch the sunset over the water. Provide one or two signature cocktails for the evening and don’t forget a few snacks, such as meat and cheese boards, mini sliders, or shrimp cocktail.
Tumblr media
BACKYARD GAME NIGHT
If you’re looking for a super low-key option for your summer rehearsal dinner, a game night is great but a backyard game night is even better to enjoy that summer weather! For a large group, have a few different game stations set up — board games on the patio, lawn games in the grass — and have a plan for getting guests to rotate between them. Order pizzas, set out bowls of chips, pretzels, and veggies with dip, and buy a few cases of beer and bottles of wine. Guests won’t be expecting anything fancy for an at-home game night, which means you can spend more time enjoying their company in a super low-key setting.
Tumblr media
LATE-NIGHT DESSERT BAR
There’s no rule that dinner has to be part of a rehearsal dinner — it’s really just the traditional name we’ve given the event. So, if your guests are getting in late in the evening, plan a late-night get together with a variety of desserts instead. You could set this up at a local coffee shop or even at your home. Simply provide a variety of your favorite desserts, such as brownies, cookies, pies, or chocolates, and a few non-sweet items for guests who might not have a sweet tooth.
Tumblr media
FONDUE PARTY
Fondue parties are fun all year round but they make for a great summer rehearsal dinner idea because they can be so informal and casual. Rather than a sit-down meal, set up one or two stations with different cheeses, bread, meat, potatoes, and veggies. Provide a couple of different wines that pair with the cheeses you select, and make sure to have plenty of extra napkins and fondue skewers on hand. If you want to add dessert, bring out the chocolate fondue later in the evening, and provide berries, marshmallows, graham crackers, and bite-size brownies for guests to dip. This would also be a great time to bring out a dessert wine or nightcap to ease your guests into the rest of their evening.
Tumblr media
BEER TASTING
If you and your fiance are really into beer or you have lots of craft breweries nearby, a beer tasting is a great option for a summer rehearsal dinner. Most breweries can handle large groups, but make sure you call ahead to ensure space and availability for the day you choose. If a lot of your out-of-town guests have never tried your local craft beer or are new to beer drinking, this would also be a great time to book a brewery tour for the entire group to learn the ins and outs of the process! For couples who prefer a more personal rehearsal dinner experience, have a DIY beer tasting at your home instead. Choose a variety of your favorite brews, stock up on cups, and let your guests do side-by-side tastings of all your favorites.
Tumblr media
ROOFTOP LOUNGE PARTY
Downtown dwellers might not have yards or parks that can accommodate a rehearsal dinner group, but they do have what most suburban areas don’t: a rooftop. If you can’t take your guests out to a green space, take them up to look out over the city with a chic rooftop lounge party. Set up cocktail tables they can stand around and lounge areas where they can sit, and keep the space open so they feel free to move around and mingle. Create the mood with background music to drown out the city noise and provide the same signature cocktails and finger foods you would at a traditional cocktail party. Because rooftops evoke a swankier vibe, make sure to tell your guests to dress for the occasion and opt for elevated (but simple) details, such as well-designed floral centerpieces, gold or rose gold utensils, nice plates, and real wine glasses rather than plastic or paper.
Tumblr media
OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHT
A rehearsal dinner should speak to your personalities just as much — if not even more — than your actual wedding. So, for the movie buffs and cinephiles, we can’t think of anything better than a movie night under the stars! If you have access to an inflatable screen, that’s amazing. If not, simply hang a sheet between trees or on a free-standing frame or project the movie on a solid-color, unobstructed area of your house. Set up lawn chairs, bean bags, pillows, and blankets in the yard for guests to lounge on. And no movie watching party is complete without the classic foods: popcorn, candy, sodas, pickles, nachos, and pretzels. You could even take it up a notch with a top-your-own popcorn bar with various toppings, such as flavored salts, flavored olive oil, seasonings, or even candies for those sweet-n-salty fans.
Tumblr media
AL FRESCO BREAKFAST FOR DINNER
Last, but certainly not least, is the trusty breakfast for dinner option! For summer, you should definitely consider making it an al fresco affair. We love the idea of creating a classic, elegant dinner party setup with tea lights, floral centerpieces, nice place settings, and pretty linens to set the mood, but then serving classic breakfast favorites to keep the overall vibe casual and fun. For food, think family-style dining with egg casseroles, stacks of mini pancakes, plates of bacon, and a variety of pastries that can be easily passed and shared. For drinks, keep the theme going with customizable Bloody Mary’s or mimosas. End the evening with coffee and donut holes, and you’ve got yourself the perfect breakfast for dinner party!

Let Me Love You - Borusara Fanfiction
Helloooo lovelies! With exams out of the way I can finally write! So here's the next chapter of LMLY! The story is simply spiralling out of my control to be honest but I really hope it's going to be a fun ride for you all!
Thanks to @deviswriting for beta reading!
Chapter 1 - A perfect Break
Chapter 2
False Smiles
“You should stop spoiling him.”
Sarada looks up at the man in front of her and notices how Shikadai's normally lazy green eyes appear to be quite stern at that very moment. Flashing angrily.
“He wanted to go.” Sarada says as nonchalantly as possible, eyes fixed on the file, wanting to prevent any kind of confrontations.
Shikadai rolls his eyes at her response, “Of course he did. But you should know better than that. He is not a kid, so stop treating him like one.”
There was a tense beat of silence before Sarada raised her head, looking him square in the eye.
“Look Shikadai, you know him better than most people here. He is responsible when the time calls for it.” She never averts her gaze from his eyes, her voice defiant.
“He should be, it's his job anyway.” He says, shrugging.
“You talk as if he wanted this.” Sarada scoffs, but immediately regrets her own words at the pained look in his eyes.
What was I thinking? Shikadai knows everything, already. He was there to witness it. Heck, he was a part of it.
Sarada's inner monologue was cut short when he speaks in a voice so small, that if not for the silence in the room, she might have missed it.
“I know.” He stops, taking a moment to clear his throat and then starts, “Look, I just want him to be happy and accept things. What gone is gone. He needs to look forward.”
Sarada nods her head, because she understands that his intentions for Boruto were correct.
Clinging to the past which is impossible now will not do him any good.
She understands.
She does.
But yet.
Shikadai bids her a farewell and leaving Sarada alone with her swirling thoughts. She grazes her teeth against her lower lip and pulls another file out of his stack to continue on. The documents prove to be a good distraction because by the time only a quarter of the files are left, the office was already empty.
She jumps when the door to her office is slammed open and an angry Boruto flies in.
“What are you still doing here?”
She tilts her head at his messy look but decides not to comment.
“Working?”
He raises his eyebrows at her answer, “Did it appear to you even once that there is a thing called 'Watch’ exists?”
She narrows her eyes at him and then flicks her gaze at her wrist.
9:17
It displays.
Oh.
Oh.
“At what time does the Office hours end?”
She stares at her lap, feeling sheepish.
“Six.”
“Glad to know that at least you remember that.”
He scoffs, appearing behind her and leaning over. He quickly saves the opened document and shuts off her laptop. The feeling of his warm chest brushing against her back made her feel oddly weird. She wants to blame it on her exhaustion but something in the back of her mind clearly declares it as an excuse.
Then his lips quirk up into an easy smile. He sweeps up the rest of the unfinished files and gathers all her stuff which he could hold at once.
“Come on! Let's go home, Kay?”
The ride to home was quite silent. Sarada simply decided to spend it staring out of the window. Despite Boruto's love for rock and metal music, the player was turned off. Her dark eyes were fixed on calmly assessing the scenery when she remembers something important.
“Boruto?”
“Hmm?”
“Can we stop by a convenience store? I think we are in dire need of some groceries.”
“Alright.”
And in no time, Boruto pulls up the car to the closest shop and she steps out in the cool air of the night. The sudden blast of cold air makes her shiver.
“I don't think that any of us is in any mood for cooking. Should I get us some Chinese?”
He asks, stepping out of the car as well, jerking his thumb at the small Chinese restaurant just over the other side of the road. She eyes the small building for a moment before nodding her head in consent and watches him skip away.
The basket weighing on her elbow was already half filled. With bread. Jam and butter. Veggies. She picks up a large packet of fusilli pasta and another packet of instant noodles. Four cups of ramen as well. A bottle of espresso powder is dropped in the basket as well. Next was mixed herbs and of course, Cheese. She didn't like tomatoes but she was a grown up now...so yeah? And of course! Chocolates!!! And a packet of frozen patties? And some burger buns. They were Boruto's comfort food, just like hers was chocolate. Oh yeah...a small bottle of tabasco sauce. Because Boruto likes his food spicy.
Sarada doesn't notice...how her grocery consists of half of Boruto's as well. It's always been like this. The mental list in her head is always a combination of hers and his together. She doesn't want to think about how intertwined their lives are together with each other's. It's a subconscious thought. Never an active debacle. Just a concern nagging somewhere in the back of her mind. Something she does not have the courage to address.
Finally with a basket full of groceries she approaches the counter where a young boy smiles at her (she realises he's new) and he quickly calculates the cost of the items and bags them immediately. She pays her bill and leaves the shop instantly.
Boruto is already back by the time she is near the car. He was leaning against the side and staring at large soccer field - a playground, in front of them. His bright blue orbs looked dull and tired.
Sarada felt something bitter lodge in her throat at the scene.
The wistfulness and regret clouding Boruto's eyes and the longing betraying his face was painful to watch.
He didn't deserve it. A small mistake shouldn't have ever led to this.
Sarada composes herself, taking a deep breath and asks, “You okay?”
“Yes! Of course! Why wouldn't I be?”
He replies without missing a beat and tries to put on that customary smile of his. And Sarada wonders if he actually believes he could fool her with that. But she decides that it's not worth commenting. Not now, anyways.
They step in the car as she drops her bags on the passenger seats behind. A large brown paper bag is there as well. The slight sour and saucy aroma is inviting and she feels her stomach twisting in hunger.
The sound of the engine reviving is loud and cuts through the air like a sharpnel trying to bury itself in her chest. She sneaks a glance at him again and of course, there it is. That hollow look.
“Um,” she begins and then continues hesitantly, “How was the game?”
And instantly, his eyes flicker with life.
“Oh! It was good! They did well, you know!”
He looks proud and she cannot help but let a smile decorate her face over it. And then he grimaces lightly.
“Matsumoto got a yellow card though! It was a good thing that Yuuma was there to step in before things escalated! That brat needs to learn to control his temper, you know!”
She observes how animatedly he talks about this subject, how wide and expressive his gestures are, how bright his eyes look and how more often he smiles. But then he turns to her and says proudly, sagely.
“The old and wise have said - discipline is the key.”
A loud snort escapes despite her resistance and she's met with a glare.
“Hey stop laughing Sarada!”
“Discipline? My foot! As if you're the one to talk!”
She points her finger accusingly at him and he doesn't obviously look happy with it.
“Oh please? Be careful with that finger of yours, at least tonight.”
“Oh yeah? Why would I do that?”
She asks haughtily with her brows raised up. And he turns to give her a grave look.
“The match ended at eight, you know? All the brats left by eight-thirty. I was home by eight-forty five.”
It takes a moment for Sarada's tired brain to process before she screams incredulously.
“You came back to office all the way just to take me home?!”
He looked at her as she was being the silly one here.
“Duh. Obviously? What was I supposed to do? Let you sleep there? All hungry and starving? Guess what miss? I'm not that heartless.”
Not knowing how to respond to him and the warmth creeping up her neck and painting her cheeks pink is so overwhelming that she turns her head to the side, willing her bangs to hide it.
A chuckle that fills the silence makes her aware that her small endeavour was actually futile. But for some reason it makes her grin even larger.
By the time they reach home, all those silences between them turn into smiles. They sweep up all the stuff from back seats and head inside the apartment.
Their apartment is not extremely large but very sufficient for two people. Consisting of two bedrooms, a kitchen, and one hall and also another tiny room which worked as a study for both of them. They had it all furnished and complete with necessary comforts. It was a small cozy space, just perfect for them. Their personal sanctuary. Where they could be normal adults. With their hobbies and weird interests and no one to look up to them as the leaders of a multi billionaire companies. No one to judge. No one to impress. Just them. And all that space in between.
The dinner is quite a small affair. And the Chinese was surprisingly good. And the loud slurping and laughter between them fills the empty silence of the house.
It makes this place home.
The chores of the house have been divided day wise. But today they both stand are doing the dishes, Boruto is washing them and Sarada is drying the utensils.
“So, what major happened after I left?”
Sarada quietly wipes off the spoons and then waves it infront of him.
“Fujikawa Corporation has requested an appointment. Something about a product they wish to launch. I've told them that we may set dates for meetings later. And well, our negotiations with D.F.B.I.G are also proceeding smoothly. Those files we brought home have few important reports on the matter.”
“I see.”
“And well” she starts softly, “Shikadai visited.”
Sarada watches how his hands still for a moment. A frown edges his face.
“He was mad, wasn't he?”
At her silence, Boruto smiled ruefully but did not say anything.
“Boruto. Look-I mean, he just wants you to do good! He's your well-wisher.”
“I know Sarada. I know.”
The silence that follows is very similar to the one before. Tense and unpredictable. Sarada wants to say something, to dispel this awkwardness surrounding them to refrains from doing so.
She notices how she does that a lot, now a days.
In no time, they settle down, Boruto skimming through the numerous files, taking notes of important stuff.
And she leans into the comfort of their couch, opening up the bookmark and reading the novel she had recently picked up.
By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept
It is an old story, written years ago. But it was only now that Sarada had decided to finally read it. The book was compelling. The story was interesting. Toying with the concepts of love and romance with a depth that only some novels could reach.
Sarada feels herself so engrossed in the book that she doesn't remember when her eyes fall shut with sleep. But when she wakes up, it's the gentle morning light caressing her face and the comfort of her own bed and her favourite blankets surrounding her. The only evidence of his presence in her room is the faint smell of his cologne.
A warm smile involuntarily curls on her lips.
Try as he might, he has always been a softie at heart.
Trust me! This story will have some drama and spice in it! and oh yes, I promised fluff but...it's not that fluffy right? Don't worry though, I promise to make this worth it! Don't forget to let me know your thoughts, okay?

Top Five Italian Restaurants and Pizzerias
Tumblr media
Located in the heart of North Shore, Bright Beet Wood Fired Pizza is the perfect place to enjoy an authentic Italian meal. A pizza shop that has been operating for more than a decade, they have been known for their gourmet pizzas that have been prepared using a wood fired oven. They offer a variety of Italian favorites and other specialties. They also specialize in gluten free options.
Upside Pizza
Amongst the clamor of the pizza aficionados, one standout has stood the test of time. Located in the heart of New Jersey’s tri-state area, Bright Beet Wood Fired Upside Pizza has a legion of fans. Although the restaurant has a hefty price tag, the wood-fired goodness is well worth the trip. The menu features an array of Italian-style pizzas paired with a healthy serving of Italian flair. With a full bar, a menu of craft cocktails and a wine list that’s bound to impress, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more satisfying meal.
It’s also worth noting that Bright Beet is part of a larger, family-owned enterprise that’s been a staple of the tri-state area for more than a decade. Although the business has expanded to a second location in the Nolita aforementioned tri-state area, the original locale remains intact.
Mitcham Social
Located in the industrial estate of Mitcham, the Mitcham Social is a contemporary, casual restaurant and bar that serves fresh ingredients and delicious pizzas. The restaurant has an upscale dining room and bar, and offers an extensive wine and cocktail list.
The menu includes burgers, wood-fired pizza, steaks, and a variety of other options. The restaurant is a great spot for family dining, a date night, or an enjoyable night out with friends. The bar features live music and is open Thursday through Sunday. Guests can also enjoy a bottomless cocktail on Saturdays.
The wood-fired pizza at Bright Beet is crisp on the outside and perfectly charred on the inside. The pizza is topped with fresh mozzarella and tomato sauce. The pizza is served with a grilled rosso pizza or house-made Italian sausage. Guests can also order calzones, pasta, and salads.
Santarpio’s Pizza
Located in East Boston, Santarpio’s Bright Beet Wood Fired Pizza has been serving up some of the best pizza in the city for over five decades. With its coal-fired oven, you’ll get a thicker crust than you’d expect, and you’ll have a blast watching the cooks at work. The place is also a little off the beaten path, as it’s five minutes by tunnel from the North End. While it’s not the place to go for a large group, it’s a great way to get a few people together and enjoy a nice slice of Italian goodness.
The menu has something for everyone, from the usual suspects to the gourmet foodies. There are several choices for your money, including a slew of wood-fired pizzas and an assortment of salads. You can get your fix by walking in or calling, and you’ll find some of the best pizza in town.
Pizzeria Bianco
Almost as long as the New York pizza scene has been around, Pizzeria Bianco has been inspiring pizza makers all over the country. The Bronx-born Bianco started out selling pies at supermarkets, but eventually opened a small pizzeria on Girard Avenue in Fishtown. Nowadays, the pizzeria is a full-blown restaurant with a casual atmosphere, and is located in a converted liquor store.
The best pizza in the country comes from unexpected places. Some of the country’s best comes from unfashionable ovens. Pizzaiolo’s pizzas started out as bakery pizzas at the turn of the century, but have since evolved into a delicious pie. The crust is almost Italian bread-like, and the sauce is never overpowered by cheese. The plain pies are outstanding, but the sausage pizza is even better.
Origano Woodfire
Using a combination of organic flour and a wood burning oven, Simone Salvatori churns out some of the best pizzas in town. At the flagship location in East Village, there is no shortage of customers who come in for pizza and beer in equal measure. The wine list is a stellar collection of Italian varietals, many of which are hard to find elsewhere. Aside from the requisite grilled cheese and hoagies, patrons are encouraged to nosh on a selection of artisanal pastas, including a slew of neopolitan dishes. One such neopolitan is the Origano Woodfire — an excellent example of what a modern Italian family might serve up. At a hefty price tag of $17, you won’t be disappointed, if you’re looking to indulge in some post-work elixirs.

California Highway 1 Road Trip
Six weeks ago, Highway 1 fully reopened in Big Sur, following devastating mudslides in May 2017. After $54 million worth of repairs and the removal of millions of tons of earth, rocks, and debris, travelers can once again enjoy an uninterrupted drive along the gorgeous coastal highway between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
But it’s not just the views that make the trek one of the most famous road trips in the world. There’s also the food to contend with: Dotted along the winding route, you’ll find peppery smoked-fish tacos, juicy burgers smothered in eggs and melted cheese, and homemade doughnuts oozing with jelly.
Our version of this journey begins in Point Reyes Station, north of San Francisco. There, you’ll want to stock up on triple cream Mt Tam cheese from Cowgirl Creamery and scarf as many straight-from-the-bay oysters as you can get down. Your eating adventure will continue from there—you’d better start hungry.
  Point Reyes
Side Street Kitchen
The specialty at this year-old, bright, modern diner is the crispy skinned rotisserie chicken, fragrant with herbs and served half or whole with an array of sauces, including curried yogurt, salsa verde, and chimichurri rojo. The other specialty: puffy, sugar-coated, fruit-filled apple fritters. 60 4th St., Point Reyes Station
The Boat Oyster Bar
Hog Island Oyster Co. is famed for the oysters it pulls out of the bay and supplies to top dining rooms around the country. A reservation-only café on the water features those world-class bivalves; the menu changes often, but it frequently includes Hog Island’s singular kumamotos. You can get a dozen raw for $36; even better are the barbecued ones, grilled and dripping with chipotle bourbon garlic butter. 20215 Shoreline Highway, Marshall
Half Moon Bay Area
  La Costanera
Peruvian food is having a moment in the U.S., and La Costanera, with its wall of windows overlooking the water from a second-floor dining room, has been recognized by Michelin’s Bib Gourmand. The menu has a mix of classics such as antichuchos (grilled skewers) with marinated beef heart and pork belly; empanadas; tender beer-braised lamb shank; and lomo saltado (beef tenderloin with onions, soy sauce, and a fried egg, if you want one). 8150 Cabrillo Highway, Montara
Dad’s Luncheonette
Chef Scott Clark used to cook at San Francisco’s Michelin-three-starred Saison. He’s transformed a red-painted train caboose into a cozy, wood-lined diner with a small menu of comfort food favorites. The $12 hamburger sandwich has melted cheese, a soft egg, and red onion pickles on grilled white bread; the mushroom version substitutes maitakes for the grass-fed beef. 225 Cabrillo Highway South, Half Moon Bay
Sam’s Chowder House
Seafood makes up almost the entire menu at Sam’s, including a “Captains Platter” of oysters, clams, shrimp, poke, and ceviche; an appetizer of grilled sardines; steamed clams (with the option of linguine); and lobster rolls, “naked” with butter or “dressed” with aioli. At night, the place highlights fresh catches such as Pacific swordfish and local halibut. The seats on the deck offer a panoramic ocean view. 4210 Cabrillo Highway, Half Moon Bay
Hop Dogma Brewing Co.
The rotating array of craft brews at this locally popular beer hall might include Pyro’s Prost chili beer (pilsner brewed with jalapeño); Every Third Inquiry, a Bourbon barrel-aged stout; and the flagship Alpha Dank IPA. Guests can order food from nearby Lamas, a Peruvian and Mexican restaurant, and the tacos, burritos, and arroz con pollo will be delivered to the taproom. 270 Capistrano Rd., Half Moon Bay
Duarte’s Tavern
Dating back to 1894, when Frank Duarte bought the place for $12 in gold, this venerable restaurant specializes in a California version of Continental cuisine. The menu runs the gamut from shrimp cocktail to pork chops with fresh applesauce. The specialties are anything with artichokes, plus the cioppino, packed with clams, shrimp, cod and especially crab, which people drive down from San Francisco to eat. 202 Stage Rd.
Santa Cruz
The Picnic Basket
Set on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, the picturesque luncheonette has an all-day menu with a powerful breakfast selection: golden-brown turnovers stuffed with seasonal fruit or Niman Ranch ham and cheese; an egg-potato-greens frittata sandwich on toast; and house-made jelly doughnuts. Later in the day, hot dogs and elbow macaroni and cheese turn up on the menu. The nearby Penny Ice Creamery, where everything is house-made under the same ownership, is equally popular. 125 Beach St.
Monterey Peninsula
The Meatery
A serious, whole-animal butcher shop with impressive cuts of meat on display, this white-tiled space also serves as a deli. Sandwiches range from a hefty Reuben to banh mi made with caramelized pork belly slices, pickled vegetables, a hit of cilantro, and kewpie mayo on a French roll. A highlight is the house corned beef with sauerkraut on rye. The hot food offerings change daily: On Sundays and Mondays, there’s buttermilk-fried chicken; on Thursdays, visitors line up for the baby back ribs. 1534 Fremont Blvd., Seaside
The Bench Restaurant
Set on the impossibly scenic Pebble Beach Golf Links 18th hole, the Bench has a crowd-pleasing menu that offers all kinds of pizza-styled flatbreads: with pepperoni; with ratatouille, fennel ricotta and heirloom tomatoes; and with bench bacon and grilled, pickled red onion. The 24-ounce short rib, the Smokey Joe, is smoked for 10 hours. Aside from the best views, the outdoor deck has fire-pit tables. 1700 17 Mile Dr., Pebble Beach
Aubergine at l’Auberge Carmel
Chef Justin Cogley operates one of the country’s best under-the-radar fine-dining restaurants. Set in a Relais & Châteaux property, the intimate dining room has a $175 tasting menu that combines local ingredients in unexpected ways: A Morro Bay oyster with caviar has a hit of sea water, and seared abalone is accompanied by romaine lettuce that’s been braised and sliced in thick rounds, with lobster-infused lettuce puree. Monte Verde at 7th Ave., Carmel
Big Sur
Big Sur Bakery & Restaurant
Amid the trees in the hills off the highway, this exceptional café produces terrific pizzas from the wood oven, with a charred, bready, chewy crust and such toppings as creamy greens, mushrooms and tangy taleggio, and red sauce meatballs. The place is first and foremost a bakery: The creamy lemon curd pie in a pistachio crust is addictive, as is any pastry in the display case. 47540 Highway 1
Sierra Mar at Post Ranch Inn
Post Ranch Inn, renowned for its modernist, cliffside, treehouse rooms overlooking the ocean, has a new manager, Gary Obligacion, formerly of Chicago’s celebrated Alinea. The property’s Sierra Mar restaurant is home to one country’s largest wine collections, with 14,000-plus bottles. It complements an elegant four-course tasting menu from which the seared foie gras has a garnish of hazelnuts and king salmon is paired with smoked split peas and sweet apple. 47900 Highway 1
The Sur House at Ventana Big Sur
In 2017, Ventana went through a multimillion-dollar renovation. The renovated Sur House restaurant now has outdoor fireside seating and a bar menu with smoky spice-rubbed chicken wings and open-faced tuna melt accented with pickled fennel. The dinner menu has deceptively simple dishes, such as grilled pork loin on a bed of jalapeño-spiked grits. The wine cellar is also notable: some 10,000 bottles with a focus on the Central Coast. 48123 Highway 1
San Luis Obispo
Ruddell’s Smokehouse
There’s not much barbecue along Highway 1. The notable exception is Ruddell’s, where founder Jim Ruddell set up shop in 2001 in a small building with a few tables outside. The place smokes albacore and salmon with a brown sugar and kosher salt rub; chicken is slow-cooked over hickory. The smoked seafood and poultry are available as tacos in a big French-roll sandwich or salad—and by the pound. 101 D St., Cayucas
Cracked Crab
In the surfing town of Pismo Beach, the unpretentious Cracked Crab has a blazing neon sign and lines stretching out the door. The menu changes according to availability of seafood and features an ocean’s worth of crab: dungeness cocktail with lime and avocado; puck-size, pan-seared lump blue crab cakes; and New England-style lobster rolls stuffed with crab instead. The seafood buckets offer the opportunity to mix and match wild Gulf shrimp, Alaskan crab, clams, mussels, and lobster tails; they go for $61 for one person and $79 for two and come with all the mallets and scissors you’ll need to extract the shellfish. 751 Price St., Pismo Beach
Santa Barbara
Jalama Beach Store & Grill
In Lompoc, the epicenter of Santa Barbara winemaking, is this grill, set inside a store that’s set inside the county park. The specialty is the Jalama burger: It’s quintessential Cali-style, with shredded lettuce, tomato, onions, special sauce, and a griddled bun. The burger has gotten so popular over its almost 40-year history that the name is trademarked. 9991 Jalama Rd., Lompoc
La Super-Rica Tacqueria
Famous for being name-checked by Julia Child, Super-Rica is a cheerful, white-and-turquoise stand with a large selection of options that feature stellar homemade tortillas. The tacos are filled with all kinds of grilled meats—chunks of spiced, brick-colored chorizo; adobado with tender strips of marinated pork. The Super-Rica Especial is made up cheese-stuffed green pasilla chiles that are roasted and draped over tortillas with marinated pork and more cheese, for $6. 622 N. Milpas St., Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara Shellfish Co.
At the end of a dock on the harbor, this photogenic counter started out selling local seafood almost 30 years ago. Customers can still buy fish from commercial fishermen here. (There’s also a robust online store with trays of uni and stone crab claws.) The chopped caesar comes with a choice of grilled, skewered shrimp or sweet scallops. There’s more local shrimp, coated with coconut and crispy fried, garnished with onion rings. Also highly recommended are the linguine studded with garlic-sauteed clams in the shell and the monumental, steamed two-pound crab, along with a selection of local wine and beer by the pitcher. 230 Stearns Wharf, Santa Barbara
The Los Angeles Area
Malibu Farm
What started as a pop-up dining room by Helene Henderson in 2013 is now a farmers market-driven restaurant and café on the Malibu Pier, with outposts in Miami and Hawaii. The all-day café at the end of the dock has a lightbulb-lit menu that boasts a pile-up of Swedish pancakes with whipped cream and whatever the seasonal berries are, as well as kale caesar and BLTs with lemon aioli brushed on whole wheat. Down the pier, a slightly more serious version of the restaurant offers a tofu, spinach, and tomato scramble on weekend mornings, and nachos, featuring blue corn chips laden with black beans, melty cheese, and drizzles of sour cream in the evenings. 23000 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu
Tallula’s
Chef Jeremy Fox, who heads up the nearby vegetable-focused Rustic Canyon, now puts a creative spin on the Mexi-Cali dining room. In a colorful space decorated with hanging plants, Fox uses exceptional local corn, served Mexican-style with smoky chipotle aioli, and accents black-cod tacos with malt tartar sauce in tender, house-made tortillas. A daily taco special is dreamed up by rotating cooks in the kitchen. The serious bar program features mezcal Manhattans on draft, as well as the obligatory margaritas. 118 Entrada Dr., Santa Monica
Father’s Office
Chef Sang Yoon began serving one of the—if not the—country’s first gourmet burgers almost 20 years ago. The Office Burger is made from freshly ground, dry-aged beef, so it’s got a deep, meaty flavor that’s further accentuated by sweet caramelized onions, bacon, gruyere, and blue cheese. Accompanying fries, standard or sweet potato, are presented in a mini-shopping cart. Father’s Office is equally known for pouring dozens of local craft beers. 1018 Montana Ave., Santa Monica

Petrus
I approached Petrus with trepedition.
The last time I had eaten at one of Gordon’s more upmarket places (Royal Hospital Road), I was told (rather rudely) that I was not allowed to take photos.  Even though I went for the full taster menu as a bit of a celebration, I ended up leaving hungry.  After multiple courses, you would think that would not happen.  Poor form.
Petrus is the other London Michelin starred restaurant in his portfolio that is still alive.  The rest best RIP as things have not gone well in the last few years for him.  I was curious to see if perhaps this was an unfortunate turn of events or if it was somewhat justified.
Petrus, like his 3 star at Royal Hospital Road, is in a very affluent part of town.  Just look at how straight and uniform the pathway and houses are.  Hard to see that in other places in London.
As a distraction, next to Petrus was an interesting shop, where I passed sometime.  It contained all manner of Swedish/Japanese goods, in particular these lights.  I hoped that as this was next door to the restaurant, a light bulb moment might translate across to Petrus.  I live in hope.
At first I thought this was a pizza.  Instead, this is the pretty plate setting.  Excellent presentation.
Avocado and lobster tart.  The first amuse bouche, it was nothing special as although the avocado was very green, the lobster was a bit sparse leading to a lack of meaty taste.  Then again, it was an amuse bouche.
Cheese goujon.  In comparison, this cheese ball was really not bad.  Crunchy on the outside, soft inside, the cheese made up for the lack of umami in the other amuse bouche.
French onion consume.  The third of the amuse bouches.  Excellent with extremely concentrated essence inside a small thimble full of soup.  A lot of theatre on hand as this was brought out as this soup was poured out from a teapot.
Bread.  To provide a bit of texture to the meal, this was bouncy and with a bitter crust.  The crust to interior mixture was rather good with contrast making both elements better.
Cornish Mackerel Escabeche, heirloom carrots, fennel, saffron, oxalis.  Pretty to look at, rather more boring to eat.  Perhaps an example of form over substance.  On a flavour profile, it was neither great nor bad but rather a bit boring.
Cumbrian beef tartare, savora mustard, dill pickles, pastrami flat bread.  Here, the presentation aligned with the taste. Delightfully meaty, filling and with bounce.  The highlight of the meal.
Black pepper crackers.  They cracked.  They were peppery.  They were nice with the tartare as providing some crunch.
Cote de Porc, apple, pickled walnut, pommery mustard.  One of the mains, this was disappointing.  Even with the large slab of fat, it was dry and tasteless.  It looked great though.
Confit salmon, ratte potato, coastal herbs, citrus beurre blanc.  Starting on the positives.  The fish eggs added nice depth to the sauce.  The potato was shaped well.  However, the potato was a bit too lumpy and with other parts a bit too smooth, so didn’t fit the texture of (a) mash or (b) potato.  Instead it seemed like a failed attempt at mash.  The correct texture seemed to be MIA.  As for the the salmon, it was bouncy and overcooked.  Perhaps confit is better done in a fatter piece of meat.
Lemon parfait, honey, lemon thyme, yoghurt sorbet.  This managed to combine two flavours which can go wrong is badly done.
Sour and bitter.
This was badly done, although perhaps keeping in the journey of this meal as it was a “just dessert”.  Just something I wouldn’t like to try again.
Raspberry gel.  One of the petite fours to try and take away the sour taste that might be in your mouth.  Although this was sweet and sour at the same time, not in a nice way.
Some other type of gel.  Also didn’t impress.
Chocolate drop.  Pleasant in a store bought way as nothing special going on here.
Madelines.  Very floury.  Not to be confused with flowery.  These tasted of little but dough.
This meal was a lesson in form over substance.  Things looked very pretty but underneath there was a lack of anything real.  Perhaps, an accurate reflection of some politicians I know.  Although, at least with restaurants, you can choose not to relive the trauma.  With “leaders”, unfortunately, you don’t really have much of a choice and often they don’t seem to get their just “desserts”.
  A quiet eating 4/10.
Lunch (3 courses) was GBP60 excluding drinks and service.

Bangkok Breakfast Restaurants: 10Best Restaurant Reviews
Tumblr media
While you can always get a great bowl of khao tom Thai rice soup in Bangkok, it’s only in the last 5-6 years that creative western breakfasts have become a fixture and popular amongst both expats, Thais, and visitors. One of the pioneers of creative comfort food and great coffee, Roast is noted for its eggs Benedict and single origin top coffee roasts. Their latest project, Ocken, serves up gourmet brunch, and if you are after a great healthy morning meal, head to the aptly named Brekkie. If you are missing bagels, the Bangkok Bagel Bakery does New York bagels served as sandwiches or with cream cheese smears. Chu specializes in pancakes with imported blueberries and makes the best cup of hot chocolate in town, and the same owners now run the Crackhouse, named for its egg-centric comfort menu. For a really snazzy breakfast, Cafe Tartine focuses on French-styled ‘petit dejeuner.’ Many of these breakfast niches feature nice gardens or cozy furniture, led by the Instagram-darling Bangkok Trading Post in the swank 137 Pillars hotel, but if their menus and surroundings are a bit too highbrow, well we will even point you in the direction of the lunch counter at Took Lae Dee, which serves the good old egg exactly as a good old egg, and has the cheapest breakfast prices in town. With all these options, even the hardiest partiers will now welcome the morning sun.

Rocket has been doing fancy takes on breakfast since before restaurants were doing fancy takes on breakfast in Bangkok, so they know what constitutes a good breakfast. Think elegant touches here, such as herbed omelettes served with Gravlax salmon, and Swedish smorrebrod open sandwiches, or various takes on Benedict like salmon or crabcake. Their rocket fuel signature cold brew coffee is legendary, and the vast menu can handle pretty much breakfast, lunch, or even an afternoon snack if needed. With knowledgeable baristas and a cozy setting, this is a long time favorite.
Recommended for Breakfast because: For a long-running Bangkok gourmet breakfast niche, look to Rocket.
Dave’s expert tip: To get here take the skytrain to Surasak and walk back to Sathorn Soi 12.

Took Lae Dee, while not falling into the same category of elegance as the other places on this list, nevertheless gets a spot here. Took Lae Dee means cheap and good in Thai, and its long food counter, which can be found inside any branch of Foodland supermarkets, has appeared in countless numbers of Thai movies and thus is well known throughout the country. The food is nothing over the top, but its regulars swear by it, and many visitors to Thailand end up spending days and hours here, lingering over the big American breakfasts, consisting of of toast, eggs, bacon, ham, sausages, orange juice and tea or coffee. Think of that local cheap hangout diner back home and you can see why Took Lae Dee is a success, not to mention that you can go shopping in the supermarket while you are there. They also have posted this review up on all their outlet walls, which we certainly get a kick out of!
Recommended for Breakfast because: For cheap and filling, Took Lae Dee is a Bangkok institution!
Dave’s expert tip: There are 9 branches of Took Lae Dee in the 11 Foodlands in Bangkok, a large proportion of tourists seem to frequent the one in Sukhumvit Soi 16 and also Soi 5. From 5-9am, breakfast goes for 49 baht!

This ultra healthy organic cafe and juice bar does brekkie, as the name implies, but also a lot more. They are actually open throughout the day, and do a range of all day breakfasts, sandwiches, and then superfood bowls and quinoa specials for those who really want something healthy. The Spirulina Bowl comes with passion fruit, bananas, and spirulina, blended with fresh raspberries, mango, bee pollen, and chia seeds, while breakfast items include avocado toast and baked eggs with chorizo. If you need your Thai food fix, try a quinoa krapao, where chicken breast is served with holy basil over quinoa. Brekkie also does a range of organic teas and fine coffees, and it’s an intimate spot to chill at, with white walls and soft lighting.
Recommended for Breakfast because: Vegans and health lovers will feel right at home at Brekkie.
Dave’s expert tip: The nearest BTS station is Phrom Phong, and you’ll need a taxi or motorcycle taxi from there, as it is a long walk up the soi.

This longstanding bagel bakery is a downtown fixture, and offers more than just the best bagels in the kingdom. An American and Thai who missed chewy New York bagels opened up this centrally located eatery and now have a legion of faithful followers. As co-owner Eric Seldin stated, “for the longest time we had to do with bagels in Bangkok that were essentially just round pieces of bread.” These days, you can treat yourself to a Lox, Stock, and Bagel, a tuna melt or a Reuben, and plenty of good coffee and desserts to boot. In addition to the bagel fixtures, there are also plenty of excellent sandwiches made with in-house cured and smoked meats. Throw in the free wifi, and you could spend a few hours or more here.
Recommended for Breakfast because: for Bangkok’s best bagels and more, the Bangkok Bagel Bakery is a winner.
Dave’s expert tip: The Bangkok Bagel Bakery is located inside of the Maniya Center, accessed by the BTS Skytrain’s Ploenchit Stati

Roast combines some of the best coffee in Bangkok along with brunch options to die for, featuring hearty fare such as poached eggs with corned beef hash, eggs Benedict with Parma ham, banana stuffed French toast, and the house standouts, which are duck hash browns made with duck, potatoes, carmelized onions, garlic and herbs. For those with a sweet tooth, the strawberry waffles stuffed with vanilla ice cream will guarantee a return visit, and of course this can all be washed down with wildly exotic roasts such as Ethiopian sidamo natural organic or Nicaraguan jinotega. In addition to this eatery at the hip Commons space, Roast has also branched out to the swank EmQuartier Mall, where they have a restaurant on the first floor of the Helix Quartier.
Recommended for Breakfast because: for excellent brunch with the best coffee in town, Roast is it.
Dave’s expert tip: Soi 13 is a bit of a walk from the BTS Skytrain station at Thong Lor, so better to take a taxi up from Sukhumvit. Breakfast/brunch is served here until 530pm.

This elegant urban lifestyle bistro sets the bar for snazzy decor and is Bangkok’s hippest breakfast and brunch niche. Open for all day dining, the Instagram-popular eatery inside the posh 137 Pillars Bangkok hotel features an airy and bright interior with high ceilings,, looking out at verdant gardens, and even a lush outdoor seating area should the weather cooperate, making diners feel far removed from the stresses of chaotic Bangkok. You’re not coming here just to gawk though, as the menu features globally-inspired dishes made with ultra-fresh ingredients that will sate all your breakfast cravings. Dig into eggs Benedict Florentine, Hong Kong congee, avocado toast, or coconut waffles to go with some strong organic coffee. Make sure to save room for dessert as well, as the Baileys cheesecake and tiramisu are superb. Bangkok Trading Post has become so popular that they recently opened another branch in the Mercury Ville mall downtown, but come to this original spot for one relaxing morning.
Recommended for Breakfast because: For Bangkok’s hippest breakfast and brunch niche, you can’t do better than Bangkok Trading Post.
Dave’s expert tip: From Phrom Pong, best to taxi up. Take Sukhumvit Soi 39 up to Phrom Chit Alley (where 39 changes to one way coming at you, and you have to turn left), you’ll find the restaurant in the 137 Pillars Hotel which is just in front of you (to the right of Soi 39).

While Chu has achieved notoriety as Bangkok’s most wicked dessert house, serving up some mean churros and chocolate along with a host of other ultra sweet desserts, it also has emerged with some fantastic breakfast and brunch creations, such as an outstanding Eggs Benedict with Hollandaise sauce and Canadian bacon. They also do homemade pancakes with imported blueberries and strawberries and French toast. Wash all this down with a cup of real hot chocolate, made with 58% cacao French baking chocolate, and guaranteed to put a smile on your face as well as your palate. Keep an eye out for their new opening in a garden house on Sukhumvit Soi 31, as the Covid pandemic has seen them end their stay in the Exchange Tower address.
Recommended for Breakfast because: The real cacao hot chocolate at Chu is well worth the trip.
Dave’s expert tip: Note that Chu has left its longtime location in the Exchange Tower and is awaiting the end of Covid before opening up in a new shop in a garden house on Sukhumvit Soi 31. Check their FB page for the latest.

From Croque Monsieur to baguette sandwiches and build your own salads, the menu is seriously good here, with soups, sandwiches, salads, roast meats, and divine eggs Benedict rounding out the French boulangerie and cafe style menu. Mainly a breakfast, brunch, and lunch spot, Cafe Tartine is also wildly popular for being one of the most family friendly eateries in Bangkok, as they have highchairs for toddlers, plenty of colouring books, crayons, and books for the kids, and even children’s movies playing throughout the day. Additionally, there is a full Kids Menu, a 159 baht deal that comes with a sandwich, drink, and cookies. The portions here aren’t all that big, but where else can you get quiche Lorraine or a brie burger in Bangkok?
Recommended for Breakfast because: For Bangkok’s best French breakfast, Cafe Tartine is tops.
Dave’s expert tip: While they list their address on Wireless, best to take the BTS Skytrain to Ploenchit, walk back a block to Soi Ruamrudee, and walk down it to the restaurant. The cafe is in the Athinee Residence.

Run by the folks behind Roast, one of Bangkok’s best longstanding breakfast eateries and Roots, its earliest and foremost gourmet coffee roasters, Ocken is an eclectic nouvelle eatery that mainly does dinner, but had to be included here for its delicious weekend brunch offerings. While the name Ocken might sound a bit Scandinavian (and certainly goes with the rather Nordic look and feel to the restaurant), it actually comes from something far more mundane. When the founders here put together their first dinner menu, they featured their two favourite foods, octopus and chicken, and thus Ocken was born! Offerings here are pretty diverse, ranging from OcMuffins, which feature English muffins stuffed with a fennel sausage patty, American cheese, and a folded chive omelet, or else omelets with melted brie, in which your standard omelet gets a facelift, adding sautéed kale, mornay sauce, and decadent brie to the mix. There are also Asian dishes like Cheeky Pho Rice, named after the Vietnamese pho and Ocken’s using beef cheeks, and even Middle Eastern spread platters that feature hummus and tzatziki. There is freshly baked bread and pastries, a lovely chocolate mascarpone crepe cake with fresh blackberries, cashew toffee, and hot fudge sauce, and of course the outstanding gourmet coffee from Roots. Set in a stylish space at the foot of the Surasak BTS station, Ocken has become a darling for the hip young Thai food-Instagram crowd, and is a pleasant spot to spend a Saturday or Sunday morning.
Recommended for Breakfast because: For hip brunch creations paired with gourmet coffee, Ocken is a great weekend spot.
Dave’s expert tip: The best way to get here if via the BTS Skytrain. Get off at the Surasak Station on its south side, Ocken is downstairs in the Bhiraj Tower.

While spicy Thai cuisine might be the driving force behind your trip, you’d be hard pressed to turn down a fresh berry pancake with maple butter breakfast. At the Crackhouse (yes you are safe, it’s all about eggs, not drugs!), the same folks behind the long time breakfast favorite CHU, not only elevate pancakes, but they’ve come up with all sorts of egg-centric breakfast and brunch dishes, ranging from a Crack Griddle (featuring an omelette, sausage, and cheddar cheese sandwiched between two pancakes), to a breakfast burrito, and plenty more. Beverages of choice include gourmet coffee and fresh pressed orange juice. Crackhouse also makes life as simple as the comfort food on tap, as they have take out, delivery, and even serve breakfast around the clock. Homesick for some good old diner dishes, then make a beeline for this authentic brekkie niche now!
Recommended for Breakfast because: For truly egg-ceptional breakfasts and major comfort food, head to the Crackhouse!
Dave’s expert tip: To get here, take the BTS to Sala Daeng or the MRT subway to Lumpini and walk over to the Sala Daeng Soi 1 alley.

Weekending
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a beautiful day here in upstate NY.  If you look past the (still) freezing temps at night, it was near 60 yesterday and should be in the 50's today.  That, to me, is a beautiful day.  I hope this finds you and your family holding up well.
Tumblr media
new gardening materials were delivered!
We have been getting a lot of to-do's around the house checked off.  And for some reason, my husband is suddenly gung-ho on whatever I suggest we do next so I'm going with it.  We discussed the garden re-do again this week and the next thing I know we were headed to load up on free compost from our neighboring town and a local hardware store was delivering materials to build more raised garden beds. Well, we've got some work to do!  We will eventually need to get more compost but for now we'll focus on building the beds so we can determine how much more we need. We did go grocery shopping just over a week ago.  I really didn't want to go so I waited until the end of the week when we really were in need.  It has been a month since we went.  There weren't a lot of choices for the most part.  No rice, pasta, flour, sugar, toilet paper, cleaning supplies or Kleenex.  We have all of those on hand but it was so strange to see the shelves still, a month into this, completely bare.  There was cereal, produce, cheese and non-dairy cheese but a much smaller selection.  I was excited to get some greens, oranges, apples, mushrooms and cilantro as well as cheese for Jay.  Jay wanted canned hash (that stuff is awful smelling....) so I was able to get the last 2 cans and I got the last 2 bottles of unscented dish soap.  Dried beans were sold out so I was able to get canned black beans that have no added salt.  I have other dried beans on hand, I just wanted some black beans.  I am grateful that we are able to go.  With so many people struggling during this time I have to remind myself to express gratitude for the ability to go and get what we need or want. Around The House - my bathroom floor is installed!!!!!  Woo hoo!!!!  We've owned this flooring for 2 years and it was FINALLY installed.  I'm so excited.  Touch-up painting in the kitchen was completed, and we are in the process of moving garden tools, freezers, and such around between the barn, shop and shed. We're planning on painting the dining room next (we have the paint, just haven't done the work, although now I'm doubting the color.....).  sidenote:  do you have a spouse who is opinionated on the paint colors?  Well, I do.  Now normally this is a good thing.  At least he cares.  But it becomes more difficult when it comes to things like wall colors, especially since I don't (nor does he) enjoy changing them.  He wants bold color and I want muted tones (he says that's boring - I LIKE boring...).  He likes the color it is - a pine green.  I do not.  It's too small of a room for that color, it makes it too dark.  I want something like "gatherings" by Magnolia Home (seen here).  We currently have a dark olive green waiting to be painted but I'm not overly excited so maybe it will change..... I had wanted to paint the living room (keeping the same color, just to freshen it up) this spring as well but we do not have the paint and I have no interest going into the store to have it mixed.  Maybe in the fall or winter.
Tumblr media
blueberry sourdough muffins
In The Kitchen - I have loved being able to spend more time in the kitchen.  I'm trying to work in some of the new recipes I've wanted to try since I have the time to do it.  Of course, I'm limited by what ingredients we have on hand. Saturday we had blueberry sourdough muffins (and coffee) I made with my sourdough discard, honey, and frozen blueberries.  They were yummy!  I started with a found recipe, as I often do, and it was ok.  So, again as I often do, I tweaked it and was successful in making it more moist and tender.  I'll share the recipe soon.  For lunch it was nachos and salad (an odd combination, I know) and dinner was chicken with orange sauce, broccoli and rice for Jay and southwestern rice and broccoli for me. Sunday was blueberry muffins and coffee again for breakfast and leftovers for lunch.  For dinner it was pizza night so I used the No Knead Bread recipe (see below) for the crust.  Jay's toppings were mushrooms, onions, peppers, cheese and pepperoni.  Mine were sautéed mushrooms & onions, olives, and non-dairy cheese.  Jay also had air fryer chicken wings (they turn out super crispy!) I've made new notes on the super easy No Knead Bread recipe.  I've been using it to make hamburger rolls, brat rolls, philly cheesesteak (and mushroom cheesesteak) rolls, dinner rolls, etc.  They are chewy, slightly crunchy, and absolutely delicious.  We also started using it to make pizza.  It works really well!  The dough is super easy to make.  I measure out the ingredients in the evening when I'm doing dinner dishes.  Then, right before I go to bed I combine them to mix up the dough.  It then is completely ignored, sitting on the kitchen counter, until I need to use it the next day either for lunch or dinner.  It's really a versatile dough.
Tumblr media
In The Coop - the coop girls are doing well.  Egg laying has decreased, I'm not sure why.  We went from a dozen eggs a day to anywhere from 4-8 per day.  They are loving the weather these days and spend most of their hours foraging and enjoying any sunshine we receive. In The Garden - seeds are planted!  I have been planting all of the seeds that are safe in our colder temps and hope to finish this week.  The raised beds that need to be built will be used for the seeds and starts that I can't plant until late May.  I usually don't get seeds in the ground early (rather, on time) so I'm grateful to have the time this year to do it. Our daffodils are about 3 inches above ground, the fruit trees have little buds developing, the azalea bush is ready to explode in color and still no sightings of the most anticipated vegetable of the season, asparagus.  Our yard is fairly well shaded so almost everything we plant is weeks behind everyone else's plants in our area because of it.  No complaints here - it makes it so much more tolerable to work outside in the summer.
Tumblr media
Oliver
Tumblr media
Jack a.k.a. Mr Naughty Pants (no, he's not supposed to be outside)
Jack & Oliver - they are doing well.  Jack is playing nice at the moment, for the most part.  (crossed out because this morning he went on a rampage chasing Oliver around and acting like a jerk - back to his old self....) Sometimes he just can't help himself.  We haven't been able to open the house windows this week so he's been bummed about that.  It hasn't been warm enough for much deck time for Oliver this past week either, although he did have a lot of deck time yesterday.  They both get a little stir crazy without that fresh air. A quick thanks - For those of you who are deemed essential workers, thank you.  Particularly those who are first responders and healthcare workers, I have nothing but gratitude for each and every one of you. I'm hoping you had a wonderful weekend as well and that you are able to enjoy the time at home.

Everything a Recipe Developer Uses to Organize Her Pantry, Fridge, and Freezer
Tumblr media
Courtesy of Food52
One pro’s recommendations for kitchen organizational tools, from the Strategist
Even if you’re the type of New Yorker who regularly cooks in your tiny apartment kitchen, it’s very possible you didn’t think much about a long-term food storage — save for a couple of washed-out takeout containers you use as Tupperware when you made too much pasta — until you were asked to stay indoors for the foreseeable future. You can of course still grocery shop, but it’s smarter to go less often by stocking up (not stockpiling — five cans of chickpeas? Sure. 50? Please don’t). The best way to socially distance is to avoid crowding commonly used spaces, like a supermarket. Preparing your kitchen to house more food for longer stretches of time requires a bit of extra pantry, fridge, and freezer organization.
As someone who develops and tests recipes regularly for work, I’m typically in possession of a few more groceries than the average home cook. If I’ve learned anything, it’s that a bit of planning will turn food chaos into (only slightly overwhelming) order. Through vertically stacking, combining smaller packages of the same dry goods into large containers, and using as much freezer real estate as possible, you too can optimize kitchen storage and feel confidently supplied, not like you’re living in an apocalypse fallout shelter or the bean aisle at Whole Foods.
For dry goods in the pantry
Tumblr media
Madesmart Dots Stacking Cabinet Shelf
Start by making more space in your current kitchen shelving situation by embracing vertical stacking. Set up these Madesmart steps in your existing pantry for instant additional area to store canned goods, spices, and other containers. You can stack these shelves on top of each other, too, for even more space.
Tumblr media
Mepal 5-Piece Airtight Storage Set
For dry goods like beans, lentils, pasta, rice, and other grains, differently sized packages can take up extra room in the panty. Same goes for baking ingredients that come in smaller quantities, like cocoa powder, baking powder and soda, and chocolate chips, as well as nuts and seeds. These can all be transferred into Mepal containers, which come in different sizes but each have the same width and length, as well as a lip around the lids, making them stackable. This means they fit nicely into my kitchen’s built-in pantry and the open shelving unit I put in for extra storage.
Tumblr media
Oxo Good Grips POP Container
A few boxes of cereal, granola, or oats can be poured into one of these giant 4.4-quart Oxo containers, as can (often leaky) large bags of flours, sugar, and other large-quantity dry goods. Though they don’t stack on top of each other, the wide base helps these containers balance easily in places that weren’t necessarily designed for food storage but are often used as such, like the top of the fridge. The pop-in button on the lid also creates an airtight seal, which keeps all your dry ingredients fresh for a long time.

Ball Glass Mason Jar with Lid and Band
Small-batch leftovers, quick pickles, cooked grains like rice and quinoa, even your sourdough starter can be stored in these tall, wide-mouth mason jars, which seal airtight and can be neatly arranged in the fridge (or pantry). They’re ideal for keeping tender herbs fresh for longer, too: Just fill with an inch or two of water and drop in your bunches of parsley and cilantro, stem-down. Narrow jars are also the perfect vessel for regrowing scallions: Snip them an inch from the root end, place in a jar with enough water to cover the roots, and leave in a sunny windowsill.
Tumblr media
Vejibag Storage Bag
To keep vegetables as fresh as possible for as long as possible, slightly dampen Vejibags and place in your greens, carrots, radishes, and celery. The higher humidity helps them stay crisp for up to two weeks (though writer Mattie Kahn told the Strategist that they kept her kale fresh for 16 days).
Tumblr media
Bee’s Wrap 3-Piece Reusable Food Storage
I use Bee’s Wrap almost anywhere you’d use plastic wrap — blocks of cheese, cut fruit and vegetables, loaves of bread and baked goods. It can be washed with cool water and soap, air-dried, and stored in a pantry for about a year, then is totally compostable. (It’s been featured on the Strategist before, too.)
One food safety note: Though Bee’s Wrap is washable, it can’t be sanitized and is therefore not recommended to use for raw meat, as the beeswax could spread bacteria to the next item you wrap. So for uncooked burgers, meatballs, and whole cuts of meat, the most food-safe choice is to continue using plastic wrap or containers that can be washed with very hot water and soap or run through the dishwasher.
For frozen foods
Tumblr media
Safeware 8-, 16-, 32-Ounce Deli Plastic Food Containers (40 Sets)
If I had to pick one container to store items in my pantry, fridge, and freezer, it would be these deli containers. They keep leftovers fresh and pantry staples organized, and the uniform mouths mean the lids fit every size container. I fill them with big batches of brothy beans and red sauce and store in the freezer indefinitely. When it comes to reheating, these containers are microwave safe, which is ideal for when I need to defrost leftover canned tomatoes quickly or don’t feel like using a bowl for my leftover stew. (Extra tip: If you’re having issues with your multi-size spice jars, transfer the goods into half-pint deli containers. Label the front side of each container with the spice name, then neatly stack them in one tall pile.)
Tumblr media
Souper Cubes Freezing Tray with Lid
While larger containers are great for soups and sauces you plan to reheat all at once, Souper Cubes are an excellent choice if you want to defrost just a cup or so of chicken stock at a time for a specific recipe. It sounds sort of gimmicky, but once you start using them you’ll understand. Of course, regular ice cube trays work just the same, but it’s vaguely annoying to use a tray of half-ounce stock cubes to yield one measly cup.
Tumblr media
Rezip 4-Piece Essential Reusable Storage Bag Kit
No matter what kind of food you’re looking to store – from lasagna Bolognese to veggie burgers to a loaf of bread to chopped greens – these bags are a dream. Essentially a heavy-duty silicone zip-top bag, Rezip bags come in myriad sizes — from one-gallon to the equivalent of a “snack bag” — and are totally washable. Stasher bags, which have been featured on the Strategist, are also a great choice here (I own a few myself!), but the largest bag they make is a half-gallon, so if you want something larger, go Rezip.
I freeze fruit like sliced bananas and washed berries on a sheet pan first so they don’t stick together, then transfer to a Rezip bag. When it comes to storing food like lasagna or cooked burgers in these bags, it’s less messy to freeze individual servings wrapped in plastic, foil, or Bee’s Wrap before placing in a Rezip bag. The food should then be slowly defrosted in the fridge, not on the counter. Before reheating, I unwrap the individual servings and place in my usual baking dishes or skillets.
For keeping it all clear and labeled
Tumblr media
One tip to keep in mind, regardless of which of these storage options you employ: Get a roll of masking tape and a Sharpie for labeling items once you’ve transferred them to containers. With clear containers, you can of course see the difference between your green lentils and brown rice, but I find it’s nice to see words to take stock of what you have before putting together a grocery list. For fridge leftovers, it’s also a good idea to mark food with the date so you remember to eat items in the order with which they’ll go bad. I sometimes have more than one batch of chicken stock in my freezer, so I’ll label those with the date prepared, just so I know to use the older one first — even though the freezer essentially halts time.

Admit it—you came to Italy to eat. It’s certainly the reason we’ve visited the country a dozen times and can’t stay away for long.
Eating in Italy is a serious business and the locals have strict food rules. You can find some of the best food in the world in Italy, but it’s also possible to pay over the odds for a disappointing meal. Visitors (especially Americans as the food culture is vastly different from the US) are often confused by aspects of dining in Italy and end up starving at 6pm or feeling ripped off.
By following these tips you’ll be able to avoid tourist traps, eat the best food in Italy, and avoid shocking any Italians along the way.
If you are wondering what to eat in Italy, I also share my favourite Italian dishes to try while you are there.
Buon appetito!
This post was originally published in 2012 and was updated in 2019 after many more delicious trips to Italy.
Eating in Italy Key Facts
A menu at a restaurant in Tuscany
Here are the most important things you need to know when dining in Italy.
Italian menus are divided into the following courses:
Antipasti – Appetisers such as bruschetta (toast with toppings), grilled and marinated vegetables, and meat and cheese platters. They can be quite filling (or absolutely humungous in Puglia and Basilicata) so we always share. Antipasti are often our favourite part of the meal as they are so diverse, feature regional specialities, and are often vegetable-heavy (less so in the north).
Primi – The first course consists of pasta, gnocchi, risotto, or a hearty soup (such as minestrone). Portions aren’t huge (usually), but it can be enough for a full meal (we usually get an antipasto as well). There are hundreds of pasta shapes in Italy so learn the regional specialities for your destination. Otherwise you might not recognise pasta on the menu as it will be called something like trofie (in Liguria) or orecchiette (in Puglia).
Secondi  – The second course is meat or fish. It is just that—a slab of meat with nothing on the side. Very occasionally a restaurant will list a vegetarian secondo like an omelette or platter of grilled vegetables, but you’re better off sticking to the antipasti and primi.
Contorni – Side dishes such as potatoes, french fries, grilled or fried vegetables, salad, and beans. If you want your meat or fish to have anything with it, you must order it separately. Note that salad will arrive after you’ve eaten your meat, but hot vegetables will come with it. Vegetarians can also make a meal from sides. Sometimes we order a side of grilled vegetables as an antipasto if there’s nothing else on the menu we want (or feel free to have some veg after pasta).
Dolci – Desserts. The menu is usually quite simple and will include fruit, gelato, a cake or tart, and a regional speciality. The creamy coffee flavoured dessert tiramisù is one of the most common desserts all over the country.  A cheaper alternative to dessert in a restaurant is heading to a gelateria and enjoying a cone on an evening stroll.
Caffè – It’s very common to finish your meal with un caffè (espresso). It comes after dessert, not with it.
Ricotta tart at Il Frantoio in Puglia
Italian dishes vary widely depending on the region. You can get pizza and pasta with tomato sauce everywhere, but don’t expect to find spaghetti carbonara in Puglia—stick to local dishes instead. I share some of my favourites at the end of this post.
Opening hours at Italian restaurants are limited. They open for lunch between 12pm and 1pm and close between 2pm and 3pm. They open again for dinner at 7.30pm or 8pm (maybe 7pm for pizzerias). Make sure you plan for this when eating out in Italy. Grocery stores (except for major supermarkets) also close in the afternoon.
Below I’ve included tips on what to do if you get hungry in the afternoon or early evening (it’s a common problem for us!).
When Eating in Italy
Do:
Eat gelato every day. It’s that good.
Look for the signs produzione propria and artigianale in gelaterias which means that the gelato is made on-site and in the old-fashioned way with natural ingredients.
Order more than one flavour of gelato. Even if you order a small size (which is usually plenty), you can choose two flavours. My personal favourite combination is pistachio and chocolate.
Pistachio and chocolate gelato at Bloom in Modena. Note that the pistachio is not bright green!
Take a food tour to learn more about Italian food culture and get some local restaurant tips. We learned so much and ate so well on the Eating Italy Taste of Testaccio food tour in Rome (read our Eating Italy review). They also run delicious sounding food tours in Florence. Our Taste Bologna food tour was one of our favourite things to do in Bologna.
On our Bologna food tour we saw tortellini being made in a local pasta shop
Read Eating My Way Through Italy by Elizabeth Minchelli which explores the differences between regional cuisines. It includes personal stories as well as practical tips and restaurant recommendations. I want to do her DIY pizza tour of Naples!
Avoid restaurants near major tourist attractions. If you do choose to eat on a popular piazza like Piazza Navona in Rome, accept that you are paying for the view and not for quality food. Perhaps just have a drink instead.
Try regional specialities. Do some research before you go or ask a local. Read about our favourites in Puglia, Liguria, Sicily, Tuscany, and Piemonte. If you order a non-local dish, it will likely be disappointing.
Cappellacci di Zucca, a type of pumpkin stuffed ravioli, is a local speciality of Ferrara.
Order un caffè (espresso) after dessert, not during the meal.
Visit bars at any time of day. They are more like cafes and are family-friendly. Stop by for a coffee, snack, soft drink, or alcoholic beverage from breakfast until late at night. They can be a good place for a sandwich if you get hungry mid-afternoon, although quality varies and some bars close in the afternoon (especially in small towns).
Drink coffee standing at the bar (al banco) to avoid paying extra to sit down—up to four times more in touristy areas.
Check the bar menu if you really want to sit down. It’s usually on the wall and you can see the prices for banco (standing) and tavolo (sitting).
Eat pizza with your hands. In a pizzeria you’ll cut the pizza into slices yourself then feel free to use your hands.
Buy slices of takeaway pizza or focaccia with different toppings for a cheap snack. This is your best option if you get hungry outside the usual meal times. You usually choose how much you want and pay by weight.
Tomato focaccia in Bari charged by weight
Stick with a primo (first course, usually pasta, risotto or soup) if you are vegetarian—a secondo (second course) is almost always meat and a primo is tasty and filling enough (and cheaper).
Cacio e pepe (cheese and pepper pasta) is a delicious Roman speciality
Order wine (or just water) with a meal—Italians only drink beer and soft drinks with pizza.
Ask for a glass of wine even if only bottles are listed on the menu. There is always the option of un bicchiere (glass) or un quarto (quarter litre) or mezzo litro (half litre) jug of house wine. The house wine is very affordable and often the same price as water—we’ve had a half litre for as low as 2 euros!
Choose your mineral water naturale (normal) or frizzante (fizzy). You’ll usually be asked this as soon as you sit down as a litre bottle is served with every meal. Unfortunately, Italians don’t drink tap water at restaurants (although it is safe to drink).
Wine is an important part of an Italian meal
Enjoy a pre-dinner drink or aperitivo at a bar. This is usually a glass of wine or cocktail. My favourite is a Spritz made with Aperol (or Campari), prosecco, and soda water. Bars always provide a snack with your drink such as potato chips, olives, nuts, and/or focaccia. This helps keep us going until restaurants open.
Fill up on the aperitivo buffets that some bars offer for free when you buy a drink in the early evenings (usually from around 6-8pm). If you are on a tight budget, it could even be enough for dinner, which is why it’s known as apericena. Although it’s frowned upon if you eat too much—in general it’s best to stick with one plate of food per drink. The best place for apericena is northern Italy, especially Milan and Turin.
The classic aperitivo Spritz with access to a large vegan-friendly buffet cost €10 at Ketumbar in Rome
Buy olive oil from a farm (vineyards often make olive oil too). You’ll never go back to the supermarket stuff. To learn more about this liquid gold take an olive oil tour to a village outside Rome or stay on an olive farm—we love Masseria Il Frantoio in Puglia (read our review here).
Visit a vineyard for a wine tour and tasting. We did a fantastic wine tour in Umbria and have also enjoyed winery visits in Tuscany, Puglia, and the Barolo area of Piemonte.
Simon hiking through the vineyards in the Barolo wine region
Try real aged balsamic vinegar. The 25-year-old stuff is like nothing you’ve tasted before. We visited a family-run acetaia in Modena on a day trip from Bologna.
Picnic. Even the simplest things taste amazing in Italy so buy some bread, cheese, olives, and fruit from an alimentari (small grocery store), market or supermarket and find a park to enjoy them in. Testaccio market in Rome is our favourite place for this.
Use an Italian phrasebook or app to help you decode the menu so you don’t have to eat in restaurants with English menus (which are usually badly translated anyway). This list of Italian restaurant phrases should also help.
Learn to cook your favourite dishes so you can recreate them at home. We enjoyed cooking classes in Puglia and Tuscany. Get Your Guide has lots of cooking classes on offer including making pasta and tiramisù in Rome, pizza in Naples, and a market and cooking experience in Florence.
Learning to make pasta in Lecce, Puglia
Ask for the bill/check (il conto). Restaurant staff will not automatically bring it as they don’t want to rush you. It can take a while as they assume you’re not in a hurry.
Enjoy a digestivo (after-dinner liquor) after your meal. The best ones are homemade and they can be bitter like an amaro, sweet like limoncello, or strong like grappa. If your server offers you a digestivo after you’ve received your bill, it’s on the house.
At Country House Tavernola near Vieste they brought us five icy cold bottles of homemade digestivi—fennel flower, laurel, cinnamon, almond, and prickly pear (our favourite)—and left us to help ourselves.
Don’t
Expect restaurants to be open for cena (dinner) until 7.30pm or 8pm. Typically Italians eat dinner at restaurants around 9pm (earlier in the north, later in the south). Pizzerias often open earlier at 7pm.
Feel obliged to order every course—an antipasto (starter), primo (first course), secondo (second course) with contorno (side dish), and dolce (dessert) is a lot of food. Pick and choose as you please. You could also order an antipasto or primo and then decide afterwards if you’d like to order another course.
Fave e cicoria (mashed fava beans with greens) is a typical Puglian dish
Order cappuccino after 10am. Later in the day, and especially after meals, stick with an espresso (ask for un caffè).
Expect much for breakfast. A coffee and cornetto (croissant, called brioche in northern Italy) standing at a bar is the norm. The best breakfasts we’ve had have been at family-run B&Bs like La Corte dei Pastori in stunning Matera where we were treated to a spread of bread, cakes, pastries, and fruit. You won’t find eggs or other hot breakfast dishes.
An Italian breakfast with a view at La Corte dei Pastori B&B in Matera
A typical Italian breakfast in a bar – a cornetto filled with nutella
Eat in a gelateria that has bright green mint or pistachio gelato—the ingredients won’t be natural. Towering puffy mounds are another sign that they use chemicals. If the gelato is hidden away in metal tins, it’s a good sign it will be high quality.
Go to a restaurant with a tourist menu or with someone outside encouraging you to come in.
The lovely osteria (simple restaurant) Ai Cuattru Canti in Finalborgo, Liguria. Menus in Italian only are a good sign.
Eat in a pizzeria for lunch. The best places only open in the evenings as the wood-burning pizza oven takes a long time to reach the right temperature. During the day stick with pizza by the slice (pizza al taglio) served from takeout places.
Order peperoni pizza unless you want it topped with bell peppers. Order a salami pizza if you want it with meat.
Ask for chicken or pineapple on your pizza. Italians consider this a travesty.
Share a pizza—even kids have one to themselves.
Roman style thin crust pizza at Da Remo in Rome. In Naples the pizza has a thicker crust—try them both!
Takeaway pizza al taglio is the best option for pizza at lunch. You usually choose how much you want and pay by weight. This was at Il Pizzicotto in Lecce.
Ask for oil and vinegar to dip your bread in. That’s not a real Italian thing. Bread is not served with butter either.
Eat bread with your pasta. Instead use it to fare la scarpetta (literally “make a little shoe”) and mop up the leftover sauce on your plate.
Order spaghetti bolognese. It doesn’t exist in Italy. Instead, ask for tagliatelle al ragù in its hometown Bologna if you want a meat pasta.
Ask for parmesan on your pasta. Italians are strict about what is supposed to have cheese on it and what’s not. You’ll be offered parmesan if it’s appropriate.
Expect fancy salad dressings. Italian dressing doesn’t exist in Italy. Instead you are provided with olive oil, vinegar, and salt to dress your own salad at the table. When the ingredients are this good, you don’t need anything more.
Expect complicated salads. If the menu says tomato salad, it will just be a plate of sliced tomatoes (maybe with basil). Again, you can get away with simplicity when the produce is fresh and flavourful.
Be surprised if your salad turns up after your main. It’s not eaten as a side dish in Italy.
A simple but beautiful raw zucchini salad
Be surprised by extra charges on your bill. Restaurants usually charge from €1-2.50 per person for pane e coperto (bread and cover charge) even if you don’t want the bread. It should be written on the menu.
Feel like you have to tip. It’s optional.
Assume everywhere takes credit cards. Many restaurants are cash only.
Expect American-style service. Restaurant staff can be a little brusque, especially in the big cities. Don’t take it personally.
Be offended if you are turned away from an empty restaurant. They will have bookings for later in the evening, and in Italy you have the table for the whole night.
Touch produce at market stalls. Tell the vendor what you want (or point) and they will select items for you.
Ask for food to go at restaurants. It’s not customary to get a doggy bag with leftovers. Take out isn’t common either except at pizzerias. Even coffee is rarely ordered to go.

If you are wondering what to eat in Italy, here are some of our favourite dishes. Remember that food in Italy is strictly local, so you won’t find most of these dishes all over the country.
Dishes found everywhere
Pizza Margherita – Found all over the country, pizza is, of course, a must eat in Italy. It’s best in Naples but we also like the Roman style with an ultra-thin and crispy base. There are other varieties, but the Margherita is a classic for a reason.
Parmigiana di Melanzana – One of my favourite things to eat in Italy is found mainly in the south—Puglia, Campania, and Sicily. Layers of fried eggplant are baked with cheese and tomato sauce. It’s usually in the antipasti section of the menu but sometimes it’s listed as a primo.
Pasta al Pomodoro – Pasta served with tomato sauce is simple but so delicious when it’s done well. It won’t be listed like this on the menu; instead of pasta, it will say the local variety such as orecchiette al pomodoro in Puglia (a pasta shape which resemble little ears).
Penne all’Arrabbiata – Short tubes of pasta with a spicy tomato sauce. It originates from Rome but is found in many places.
Bruschetta al Pomodoro – One of our favourite starters is a simple garlic-rubbed toast topped with fresh tomato, basil and olive oil. It also comes with other toppings.
Parmigiana di melanzana in Puglia
Lazio (Rome)
Tonnarelli Cacio e Pepe – Thick spaghetti-like pasta with pecorino romano cheese and black pepper. Oh so good! My favourite place for it is Flavio al Velavevodetto in the Testaccio neighbourhood of Rome.
Pizza Bianca – This is the type of pizza you get in squares from a bakery or takeaway place not at a sit-down pizzeria. It’s plain dough (almost like focaccia) drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt and rosemary. Fresh out of the oven it’s divine. My favourite place for it is Antico Forno Roscioli in Rome’s historic centre.
Pizza di Patate – Another type of delicious takeaway pizza slice features thinly sliced potatoes and no tomato sauce. Sometimes it comes with cheese.
Pizza rossa and pizza bianca from Antico Forno Roscioli in Rome
Liguria (Genoa, Cinque Terre)
Trofie al Pesto – You can find pesto (a basil sauce) outside Liguria but it’s best in its home region. Trofie are little twists of pasta and potatoes and green beans are sometimes added to the dish.
Pansotti alla salsa di noci – Cheese and spinach stuffed ravioli with walnut sauce.
Antipasti misto – The mixed antipasti (appetiser) plates are superb in Liguria and can be adapted for vegetarians. They usually include torta di verdura, a local vegetable pie filled with cheese and greens or vegetables.
Focaccia – Liguria makes the best focaccia we’ve had in Italy. This olive oil bread is eaten plain or topped with olives, tomatoes, onions or other ingredients. It’s sold in bakeries and you usually pay by weight.
Trofie al pesto
Tuscany (Florence, Siena)
Panzanella – A salad of stale bread, tomatoes, onions, basil, and sometimes cucumbers. It tastes better than it sounds!
Pappa al Pomodoro – Another use for stale bread is this tasty tomato soup.
Ribollita – A hearty winter bean and vegetable soup (yep, there’s some stale bread in here too!).
Puglia
Orecchiette con Cime di Rapa – Little ears pasta with turnip tops (a type of leafy green vegetable).
Purea di Fave con Cicoria – Fava bean puree with bitter greens.
Antipasti della Casa – The house antipasti is our favourite part of the meal in Puglia. It can be an extraordinarily large array of vegetables, cheese, fried things and much more (mostly vegetarian). Only get one between two people and sometimes even then you won’t have space for a main course.
See our detailed guide to Puglia food for many more recommendations.
Campania (Naples, Amalfi Coast)
Don’t miss pizza in Naples!
Gnocchi alla Sorrentina – Simon’s favourite Italian dish (besides pizza). Gnocchi (potato dumplings) baked with tomato sauce, mozzarella and basil.
Insalata Caprese – The simple salad of tomato, mozzarella and basil originates from the island of Capri.
Sicily
Pasta alla Norma – Penne pasta in a tomato and aubergine sauce topped with ricotta salata cheese.
Busiate alla Trapanese – Long twisty pasta with a type of pesto made from tomatoes, almonds, garlic and basil.
Pane con Panelle – Chickpea fritters in a roll is a popular street food in Palermo.
Our Sicilian food guide has lots more ideas to try including the many sweets the island is famous for.
Emilia-Romagna (Bologna, Modena)
Emilia-Romagna has some of the best food to eat in Italy. Aside from parmesan cheese and aged balsamic vinegar, you should also try:
Tortelloni– Pasta parcels stuffed with ricotta and herbs. Vegetarians should get the sage and butter sauce rather than the ragù. Tortellini are similar but smaller and filled with meat.
Tortelloni and Lambrusco wine at Da Danilo in Modena
Best Places to Eat in Italy
Our favourite place to eat in Italy is Masseria Il Frantoio, an olive farm with accommodation in Puglia where we indulged in an eight-course tasting menu using produce and olive oil from the farm. It’s also our favourite place to stay in all of Italy.
Otherwise, we’ve eaten in so many amazing restaurants that it’s hard to choose favourites. When choosing where to eat in Italy you can see our restaurant recommendations by destination in these posts:

The Chicken Wing & White Linen
Style may be subjective, however on the subject of hot wings, the lines are much more black and white. There is no grey area here. To be clear for my non-American readers (if you’re out there), Buffalo wings, hot wings, chicken wings, are all the same thing. They’re comprised of the arm and wing of the chicken, deep fried, and tossed in a vinegar-based hot pepper sauce, with a little melted butter mixed in. They’re typically served with blue cheese salad dressing on the side with celery sticks. The celery is supposedly a pallet cleanser, but really, it’s just there to make us feel better about what we’re eating. It’s a fact that for every 3 wings you consume, one stick of old celery will un-do whatever damage the wings have done to your overall health.
The quality starts with the bird, and its diet. The “drum” wing should NOT be the same size as a chicken leg “drum”. Good wings are small wings. This is not up for debate. If you like big wings, you don’t like wings; you like saucy, spicy fried chicken. It’s not the same thing. From size we go to crispness. A good wing is not soggy. When you eat ribs, you want the meat to fall off the bone. When you eat wings, you want resistance; you want a crunch. There should be no breading involved, just a good long deep fry rendering your wing crisp and perfect. If you’re eating smoked wings, this won’t happen. Smoked wings are a whole other “breed of cat” and far less interesting. Next we come to the sauce. Now there are novelty sauces out there, and I enjoy a few myself. A local wing establishment makes a mean jalapeno cheddar sauce. Even better is their “Goldrush” BBQ sauce. It’s a tasty, honey mustard-based, spicy BBQ sauce with absolutely perfect orange coloring.
When first examining a classic Buffalo sauce, color is a dead giveaway. Color matters. If it’s not a warm deep orange, you’re in trouble. Or rather, you’re about to bite into some wise guy’s interpretation of Buffalo sauce. The recipes all vary. My personal favorite at a hole-in-the-wall wing shop just north of Buckhead in Atlanta is the house hot sauce mixed with garlic-parmesan. As far as wing flavor combinations go, you’ll never do any better. Imagine the perfect hot wing, crisp, small, with that perfect Buffalo orange coloring, AND it’s been rolled in grated parmesan cheese. This is the pinnacle. I frequent this restaurant so much, that recently when I made it a point to mention I’d be leaving town for 2 weeks, the entire staff gave me a goodbye. If you’re worried about me don’t be. I check in on my cardiovascular health regularly.
When it comes to eating the wings, there is a right way and wrong way. I know this may seem illogical, but go with me on this. What pairs best with a big basket of wings? Beer. Beer is the wing’s best companion, second only to the dressing. Beer is the hot wing beverage. If you’re eating wings with two hands, you’ll never have a clean beer hand. This is why wings should only ever be eaten one-handed. This is not difficult to do and once you’ve mastered the technique, you’ll wonder why you ever ate them two-handed to begin with. Your plate is your “second hand”. It’s as simple as taking a bite, placing the wing down, spinning it, and taking a bite again, all one-handed. This is of course easiest to do with the “drums”. The “flats or the two-boned wings, take a little more effort, more dropping and flipping. Most importantly here is to realize, you’ve got a clean hand; A clean hand to grab extra napkins with, to grab a celery stick with if you’re so inclined, but most importantly to grab your beer glass with. The one-handed wing eating practice will keep your beer hand clean and your taste buds happy.
Now, you certainly can’t go out to eat such a messy meal in white, can you? I’m here to tell you yes, you can. For my fellow sartorial nerds out there, be bold with your whites. I once read in an interview with the very stylish Alessandro Squarzi, and I’m paraphrasing here, that you should treat your white trousers the same as you do your black or navy trousers. Stains, spills, rings from the bottom of a wine glass are nothing more than added bits of character. At the end of their life cycle your whites will tell a story far more interesting than if they stayed safely in your closet. I’m not suggesting you wear all white all the time and let stains come as they may, but don’t be that guy who buys an off-white linen suit for the summer and never wears it for fear of staining it. It’s not serving you on a hanger in the closet. White isn’t meant to stay white just as linen isn’t meant to stay neat and wrinkle-free. You can live in charcoal high twist all your life, or be bold, and dare to allow your linens to wrinkle and your whites to stain. If you’re living boldly enough, then these blemishes will no doubt tell a great tale down the line. Sadly, if all you can say is that you weren’t paying attention on the subway and sat in gum while riding home alone on a Friday night then maybe you shouldn’t be dressing so boldly just yet. Every day can be an occasion, but maybe not the white linen suit kind.
Can one man intertwine the subject of chicken wings and white linens? Yes, he can. As the writing shows, I’m more passionate about one than the other. White linen’s aren’t an everyday look, but hot wings are always good.
