I snuck in a late spring hike in Cheat River Canyon yesterday, before the dreaded heat dome builds in early next week. Between Brazil's Pantanal going up in flames and the massive heat spikes in North America and elsewhere, I wonder what will be left of this planet's beautiful wild places in twenty to thirty years. For now, I celebrate and cherish every day the glorious diversity of living things that nature has gifted us. This includes the magnificent poke milkweed (Asclepias exaltata), a shade tolerant member of the dogbane family, which feeds and hosts a great many of those living things, such as the extraordinary Himmelman's plume moth (Geina tenuidactylus). Or the comical-looking rock harlequin (Corydalis sempervirens), which clings to the rocky outcrops of the canyon. And the exquisite downy skullcap (Scutellaria incana), a gregarious summer mint that associates with wild bergamot and tall thimbleweed at forest edges. And how about the peculiar dangling flowers of Indian cucumber (Medeola virginiana) or the pale, ghostly stems and bracts of the parasitic Indian pipe (Monotropa uniflora), just now emerging from the forest floor? In a couple of weeks, the rhododendron bloom will start in the canyon and summer will be in full swing.

like sorry but if ur actually seeing an increase in students using chatgpt 2 write essays 4 ur class why is ur first thought "oh they're being lazy" & not "have i structured this class in a way that makes this student feel the need to rely on chatgpt?" especially bc the majority of college students are overwhelmed taking multiple classes working part-time jobs caring for family dealing with health issues etc etc like there are soooo many reasons a student might decide to use chatgpt that are not just "laziness"!! consider:
the student didn't have time to complete the assignment without chatgpt -> have you created an environment where students can ask for extensions without judgment? do you only give out extensions for "emergencies" or "valid reasons" (<- subjective measure)? if so, why? what purpose do these strict deadlines serve? [think about how this overlaps with students who may have "had time" but were overwhelmed for other reasons; what kind of environment have you created for these students, and does it best serve their learning?]
the student didn't feel they had the ability to write an essay of good enough quality to receive a good grade without chatgpt -> how are you grading students' work? what grading scales have you utilized that made this person feel as though they're incapable of succeeding? do those grading scales prevent them from succeeding? if so, why? what educational resources did they or did they not have access to before entering your class? how might that change considerations about how you grade? [think about how this overlaps with students completing coursework that is not in their first language and whether your grading standards are truly equitable for these students]
the student didn't feel that they could understand the material and therefore couldn't complete the assignment -> again, have you created an environment where this student can come to you for help? how are you presenting and explaining material? what opportunities have you provided for students to seek out additional resources and support with understanding? is this assignment and its correlated grading scale designed to accommodate a variety of skill levels, or is it designed with "the best student" in mind?
the student actually just doesn't care about this class and doesn't want to do the work -> why don't they care about this class? what other classes or work are they prioritizing, and why? to what extent are you willing to accommodate students who simply will never view your class as a priority, but need to complete it to earn a degree--and how is that need tied structurally to a university that serves primarily as a class barrier? what role do you play in that university structure, and is it a role you want to play?
at the end of the day if your goal is 2 prioritize student learning that means being flexible & adapting your grading scales, assignment structures, class policies, etc. to accommodate students at their level of learning for their own purposes. like if the choice is between having a student get a zero on an assignment for "cheating" versus working with that student to create an alternative assignment which they can complete & which engages them with the course material on a level they can manage then to me it seems like a pretty clear choice between "no learning" and "some learning."

"It's powerful, it's visceral, it's dark, it's like a Shakespearean tragedy. There’s no Arya — a character everybody's going to love. They're all flawed. They're all human. They do good things. They do bad things. They're driven by lust for power, jealousy, old wounds — just like human beings. Just like I wrote them."
Seeing people debate which grey characters can still be considered "morally good" and somehow Arya never makes the list, so it's the perfect time to bring back this quote from George which shows exactly how he views her character 🫶🏾

A character study of Lemon
A companion piece to these posts I & II, inspired by @books-are-my-life-stuff gifs
Tumblr media
“I was intentionally getting in [Mash’s] way so he wouldn’t reach the goal. Professor Lucci asked me to. He told me he would pass me if I got in his way. My family is poor, and I desperately wanted to be accepted for their sake.” — Lemon, episode 2 “I reached out thinking even scum can be useful, but you bit the hand that fed you. Is your stupidity inherited from your parents? No wonder you have a miserable life.” — Lucci, episode 2
Magic determines one's social status so poor families with average to low magical abilities were seen as sub-human and treated as such (see the views of Wirth Madl, Abel, Carpaccio, Levi etc). "The strong have the right to take from the weak" is a philosophy that many magic users believed in, especially the elite. So Lemon was used to being dismissed and given crumbs. Street-smart out of necessity, she was resigned to cheating and lying for her family because society would never give her a fair chance. The guilt ate at her but survival came first.
Something shifted when she met Mash. He came back for her at the risk of not passing the exam. He put his future in jeopardy for her. For the first time ever, Lemon mattered.
For me that's also why Lemon falls for him. Here is a boy who came back for her. No one had done that. As the eldest daughter, Lemon had to be the responsible and dependable one. She took care of others. Mash was the first one who came back.
Tumblr media
Mash's motivation to enter Easton Academy and become a divine visionary struck a chord with Lemon because she also entered Easton Academy for her family. She was willing to cheat to get ahead while Mash, who's very existence challenged the status quo, played by the rules and won. He inspired Lemon to live life on her terms, to allow herself to dream and not settle anymore.
Lemon is also deeply grateful to Walhberg who accepted her into Easton Academy despite her cheating. The strongest wizard saw something in her and gave her the chance she desperately needed. Knowing the immense luck she had, Lemon threw herself into her studies, took extra credit, was part of many clubs. While in canon Lemon has "Mash tunnel vision", for me she is is very much aware of who she is, where she is and the opportunities offered by Easton Academy.
As said in my previous post, Lemon tries her best to give back to Easton Academy by tutoring juniors, volunteering, organising school events etc. Her disposition brings people together, like in the Innocent Zero fight.
A downside to having a jam packed schedule is that Lemon does not take time to rest. She is always pushing herself to make the most of every minute, at the expense of her health. She does not listen to her body and eventually suffers burn outs.
Tumblr media
The paraphrased quote from Aera's gifset "Dear young maiden, Fall in love for life is short and time wait for no one" encapsulates who Lemon is to me.
We see how obsessed Lemon is with Mash and that is 100000% for comedic effect. But I also see it as a window into who Lemon is. She is someone who cares so deeply and is fully committed, be it Mash or the welfare of magical creatures. There is no in-between and that is how Lemon approaches life.
In this post I wrote "lemon knew binding magic (chapter 2 & 126) and training animals with kindness (chapter 126) so she settles on care for magical creatures." I still stand by Lemon choosing this field but she does so because she loves it. As explained above, I don't see Lemon settling anymore, especially for something as important as her career. She still does her research, goes to university and career fairs, shadows people who's jobs interest her, reviews career progression potential and income etc. She chooses studies of magical creatures.
Tumblr media
Lemon has always been brave and Easton Academy, including her friends, have inspired her to be bolder. To keep going despite all the rejection. No attempt is futile. The world was saved thanks to ordinary people coming together. Lemon saved Mash (and the world) by physically shielding him, no magic involved. She follows her heart and wants to live a life without regret. So she applies to the most prestigious universities and most competitive programs. She puts in the work.
For me Lemon is not magically inclined. She stays up late, reviews her flash cards at lunch, tapes her notes to the bathroom mirror to revise while brushing her teeth. She works hard. She is not and will never be a girlbossTM to me. There will be no radical transformation into a snarky "not like other girls" overpowered character. Lemon is very aware of her limitations. She will never be as powerful as Dot or Lance or even Finn. She will never be as strong as Mash. Surrounded by such incredible people, she grapples with insecurities, doubt and even jealousy but life goes on. She tries to do the best with what she has got. She remains the sweet girl who doesn't let Mash finish his choux creams because their senior is at the hospital.

so i made up my own alphabet when i was 11 and it stuck with me ever since and the last few months iv been obsessively reworking it. its inspired by the fluidity in Arabic calligraphy and the art of taino petroglyphs. (im obsessed with how the art is simplistic but very clear in what theyre trying to convey. theyre capturing the feeling of that thing in lines. its cartoons!! im obsessed)
i always found it so interesting that my ancestors never had a written language. and the petroglyphs arent really like hieroglyphics.
idk but i wanna see if i can correlate this alphet into the phonetics of the language. i wish there were good resources on it.

Sometimes I think about the fact that Lucy was married and has never once spoken about it. I wonder about Gelsin Mux every single day actually.... Imagining Lucrecia as young and in love in Grulovia before she got tied up in any sort of crazy Psychic 7 nonsense is so bittersweet to me. I like to imagine her ties to Gelsin as being like her ties to her old life. Gelsin and Marona and Lazarus after a certain point of interacting with the psychics in America become almost like characters in someone else's life to her. I'm really fascinated with this idea of Lucy really losing touch with her old life. It's obvious that she had a lot of love for Grulovia and for her family but what she was doing with the rest of the Psy7 was extremely important to her. I like the idea that maybe she just felt a little suffocated and isolated for a while in Grulovia as a powerful psychic and couldn't find anyone to relate to (I hc that neither Marona nor Lazlo were psychics) so the Gulch became a place of acceptance and self expression that she had never been used to having. But the way that the Gulch made her grow as a person meant that she could never really go back to "the old Grulovia" that she grew up in, especially considering that the country was war-torn upon her return.
Tumblr media
Also realizing that this image here means that it is highly likely that she left Gelsin in Grulovia with it very questionable if she would return. Since it is canon that Gelsin died in the Grulovian war, and not the Deluge.... and Ford met Lucrecia as Lucrecia Mux. I like to think that they fell in love when they were young and back when things were really simple for Lucy, but after she was able to identify how vital being psychic was to her as a person, they lost the ability to relate to one another like they used to could. I don't think she ever really fell out of love with him, they just grew apart in a sad way...

kinda buzzes my mind that while Oceanus and Tethys were not involved in the Titanomachy war, Styx (their eldest daughter) and her children were. In the Theogony, Oceanus advises her to. Even to this day, Zeus reveres her enough to have her be the name all gods bound an oath to, and all her children are part of his retinue (Bia, Nike, Zelos, and Kratos).
Oceanus during the Titanomachy is pretty interesting not only for not playing an active role on either side (having this underlying guilt of betraying his brothers vs knowing Zeus has higher chances of winning the war and thus not endangering his children and place) but also because in the Bibliotheca, he also does not participate in the castration of Uranus, the one thing that leads to his youngest brother's claim of the throne. I think while that makes him a passive entity, I like to believe that makes him a kind one as well. It also kinda saved his life and all of his children's.

I think we underestimate how much Violets parents marriage had played into her conception of love. Her parents didn’t have that passionate all consuming love that she and Edmund share, so to her, passion is love, and without passion all you have is a cold, life-less marriage of convenience. That’s why she pushes her children so hard to seek out passion, because she’s never seen love in soft, quiet, way of being. She has known passion and she has known no love at all.
