Bitterbat being a villain fueled by his love for Sweetheart and his desire to be together with her forever is so nice and indulgent for me.

He's not an antagonist in the traditional way where he opposes the protag's goal, because Sweetheart's goal is def to be with him.

He's an antag to Decking City itself.

He is always ready to destroy it. It's not a secret he's keeping from Sweetheart either as he often brings up how willing he is to do it. It helps as a sort of motivator for her to not slack off during their battles since she knows if she slips up, her boyfriend "wins" and Decking City is over.

But it doesn't stress her out because she knows Bitterbat never goes full force against her. He does enough to make the fight fun and enriching to them both.

The threat is always there. Like a campfire that is enough to roast some s'mores. If one isn't careful, it could get too big and out of control. But it's easy to keep it calm and small to have a nice sweet treat.

And the risk of destroying the city doesn't go away when Bitterbat becomes a hero.

He is still willing to wipe the city out. Granted, it won't happen because Sweetheart lost a fight against him. It mostly would happen if Sweetheart decides one day "I'm tired of this". Some of his "I don't care about this mf city" leaks out during some battles he has against villains of the week where he causes more property damage than truly necessary.

When he's a hero, he also becomes a bit more scary because before, he only heard hero drama from Sweetheart. He rarely got to really witness it. But when he's a hero, he gets to have a first hand experience. He gets to see what Sweetheart has to put up with when she visits Decking Defense Force's HQ.

He'll know a lot of hero things and a lot of heroes. All of which he's already sorting in his brain who is safe and who is going on his list. At this point, he's like a guard dog on a chained leash and Sweetheart has a very loose grip on it. But he's loyal and doesn't attack unless commanded...or provoked.

He is very well aware that the laws are much more strict about killing a hero versus killing a villain...but he's always up for a little bit of mental scarring. A couple "friendly" chats here and there. Some messages being sent with a deep growl as he asks "Did I make myself clear?"

God help Freebird when he visits.

Bitterbat is going to be looming over Sweetheart like a shadow and watching him like a hawk with murderous intent so strong that drops the temperature of the room to freezing.

Wtf. I know it's not really a big deal but I was just looking at my Facebook selling reviews and saw that the last person I sold something to only gave me 1 star. I'm like... flabbergasted. I gave her a massively good deal, we made a plan to meet, I showed up on time, and she tried on the shoes and said she was thrilled and then we sat and chatted for quite a while over our mutual like of Bed Stu and Freebird shoes. To me it felt like the perfect transaction. She didn't write any reason for giving me only one star. I'm so bothered lol.

(cam popped into chat in the middle of this lol) dragon lair. ate her whole. chewed her way out. stomped on its head until it died. met frog and tori and lived near the woods by them.

Yes, intergenerational trauma! That was actually part of the concept. I’m interested in that idea of phylogenetic memory, and how the experiences of our ancestors somehow program our identity. Promotions didn’t happen often amongst the Elven portion of the NWPD, so Snocoun’s ascent upwards in the ranks was reason to throw a huge party. Sno hadn’t wanted any kind of public attention, so Avi had arranged literally everything. The venue, the caterers, and the entertainment.

Everything had been arranged by text. Email, messaging systems. He hadn’t known...

He hadn’t known the Bard would be so lovely.

Avi was staring. He knew he was staring. He could feel the blush starting in his cheeks. He could imagine quite a number of interesting futures with that man on the dias.

All dependant on his being able to talk to him first.

“You’re drooling, Burnsides,” Sno murmured in his ear. “See something you like?”

Avi swallowed and quickly looked away from the violinist. “Who? Me? What makes you say that?”

Sno quickly picked up on where Avi was pointedly not looking and smiled like a shark. “Oooh... Lust at first sight... The Bard?”

“Shut up,” he mumbled.

“I think you li-ike him. You want to ki-iss him. So go and hu-ug him...”

“Shut up...” The blush crept outwards from his cheeks.

Sno took a deep breath and fortified herself. “Welp. It’s about time I took a bullet for you. We’re buddies. It’s about time I did you a good turn.”

Avi, who knew exactly how awful Sno was at interpersonal relationships, cringed and blushed harder. “Sno, no...”

“Sno, yes.”

Avi could only whimper and attempt to hide in the crowd. He rolled a nat 1 on his stealth check.

Johann had been quietly eyeing the guy who’d hired him half the night. He knew that Elves - even half-Elves like himself - had a certain effect on Humanmen. He was living proof. As the night progressed, the dude was turning increasingly interesting shades of red.

Uh-oh. Here came the partner. Johann had heard the others here calling her ‘the cold front’ half the night and ‘the big chill’ the other half. Judging by the look on her face, she was about to be up to shenanigans. Probably something like requesting Freebird or Louie Louie. Junk like that.

“Hey. Bard...”

“Name’s Johann.”

“Yeah. Uh. Do you, like... have somebody?”

What? This was not what he anticipated. Not at all. He and Redguy had been chatting for a while. Maybe Red was that colour because he knew she was this awful. “Whut?” he said.

"You know like...” her hands juggled invisible balls between them. "A life partner. Significant other. Snuggle buddy. Whatever. Do you come home to a flesh person on the regular?"

Flesh person. Holy shit, that was awful. No wonder Red, over there, was turning vermillion. “...no?”

“Are you looking for someone?”

“No! I mean. I'm not into you. Not like that. Um. A friend'a mine... he's been... Look. Do you like guys?" This whole situation could not get more awkward even if they were having an awkward contest.

“This conversation is getting harder and harder to follow,” Johann confessed.

"So... my partner. Not partner-partner, but like, on the job partner? He thinks you're cute." Her face twisted weirdly and after a moment, Johann realised she was trying to smile. “He’s my buddy and I’m trying to do him a solid, here.”

Across the room, now valiantly attempting to hide in a corner despite the lack of cover, Red yelled, “DAMNIT, SNO!”

Buzz around the room increased significantly. Johann knew that buzz. Bets were being laid. More than that would be being laid, if he played his cards right.

“That’s him,” said Sno.

“Oh. Yeah.” Johann was certain he was failing to pretend he hadn’t noticed Red. “Kind’a cute...” especially when he was red-faced and cringing in anticipation of imminent disaster.

Sno turned and yelled, “HE SAYS YOU’RE CUTE!”

Gods, it was amazing the poor fellow didn’t spontaneously combust. If the path to true love was paved with soul-crushing mortification, this lady was the gods-damned entire road works. “Lay off the poor fellow, huh. I don’t want him to die before we get a chance to talk.”

“His name’s Avi Burnsides and I will figure out a way for you two to talk to each other tonight if it kills me.” She had a slip of paper ready and tucked it into his shirt pocket. “But just in case, that’s his number.”

Ah shit. “M’kay. Real quick. Favourite song?”

“Istanbul Not Constantinople by They Might Be Giants.”

“Cool.” He pitched his voice to carry. “This next number is at the request of the celebrant...” and then proceeded to play the living fuck out of Istanbul.

Meanwhile, over in the corner of Avi’s eternal shame...

“I hate you and I want you to shrivel up and die,” said Avi.

“No you don’t,” Sno handed him another Redcheek Cider. The strong stuff, since they’d either be walking or catching a cab home. Besides, her buddy obviously needed some Dutch Courage. “He said you’d have to pay him in person? Someone’s been stealing his mail.”

Avi didn’t believe it for a second. “We already have each others’ emails, and I can pay him by e-transfer.”

“Nope. You can’t do it. There’s been a SNAFU with his bank. They’re taking too long to give him money people send him. Dude’s running a bit short. He needs to pay rent y’know?”

“Ahuh,” said Avi in his this-is-a-cartload-of-horseshit voice. “What kind of SNAFU?”

_Ah, crap..._ “Uh. Like. You know on Paypal when you get too many payments, too fast? They -uh- freeze your account? It’s like that, only they’re auditing every e-payment. It’s a pain in the ass.”

“Huh. Never heard of that,” he said. “Shouldn’t be a big deal to hand him a cheque.”

“And thank him for a marvellous job at playing tonight?”

“Especially that one. I didn’t know you were into They Might Be Giants.”

“Who isn’t?”

“Sno...”

“I panicked. It was the only violin piece I could think of.”

He patted her arm. “Honesty’s very important between friends, Ton, Sno.”

“I’m letting you get away with that tonight, Burnsides. Thin ice,” she growled. “Drink your cider.”

She sipped lightly - not that alcohol had a lot of effect on Elves - and tipped up his elbow a little to encourage him to drink more.

“You’re an ass, Sno,” Avi coughed, having had some of the cider go the wrong way.

“Yeah, and you’re the only one who can handle it. Drink up. You’re gonna talk to the man.”

“Okay.”

“Tonight.”

“Okay.”

“And say more than two words in succession.”

Now he looked stricken. “Aw, come on...” He was back into turning a fine shade of crimson. “I can’t do that.”

“Not yet, you can’t,” she had a bottle of his finest, richest home brew. “Follow that with some of this, and you might be able to say a few words to him before the end of the evening.”

Avi whimpered.

“Or...” she said. “I act as your go-between all night.”

Avi sank the rest of his Cider in a sudden and desperate thirst.

Johann took a break for food and something non-alcoholic. Two more sets, tops, and ninety percent of these cops would be so pie-eyed, they’d be pouring them into their cabs and ubers.

Uh oh. Here came the lady of the evening. Shoving her partner towards Johann with a great amount of reluctance on his part.

“No, no, no, no... I still can’t do it... Sno-o-o-o-o-o...”

“Say ‘hello’,” coached Sno.

Avi, halfway sloshed and very red in the face. “Uhm. Hi? You play real good.”

“Thanks,” said Johann. “I practice daily.”

“Say, ‘I think you’re cute’,” coached Sno.

Avi went even redder. “That... um... youroutfitlooksrealnice...”

“Close enough.”

Johan was starting to feel a little pink around the cheeks, himself. “Yeah, the entertainment company makes me wear it.”

“Say, ‘maybe I should see you out of uniform’,” said Sno.

“NOT LIKE THAT!”

Johann snorted. “Yeah, I wouldn’t mind seeing you off the clock, either. You free weekends?”

“Alternate ones,” said Sno. “This coming weekend is completely free.”

“...eeeeeeeee...” said Avi, cringing in mortification.

“Saturday or Sunday?” said Johann. “You a morning person, cutie?”

“...kyeeee...” Avi gasped. “...yousaidI’mcute?”

“He’s a very annoying morning person,” said Sno. “Pick a day.”

“Saturday’s cool,” said Johann. “I know a great breakfast place on Swine Row. One thirty-four. Know it?”

Sno had picked his pocket and was plugging details into his phone. “He’ll find it. I’ll make certain he doesn’t freak out and dash.”

“I got a quicker way,” Johann said. “Want some motivation, sweetie?”

Avi just kind of squeaked.

Johann leaned over and kissed him. A friendly smooch on the cheek, but he put a lot into it. “See you Saturday? About nine in the morning?”

“...uh huh...?” Avi squeaked.

“Fantastic.” He was a lot red in the face, now. “Got any favourite songs? And please don’t say ‘Istanbul’.”

“Um. Day in the Life by the Beatles?”

“Aw shit yeah,” Johann grinned.

Sno dinged her champagne glass with a fork. “Everyone? Everyone raise your glasses for Officer Burnsides... because he has a date this weekend!”

The entire room cheered as one half paid some money to the other half.

Parquet Courts and Goat Girl – Madison, Wisconsin May 30, 2018

My fourth show in four weeks and this was a great one! This was the second time I’ve seen Parquet Courts, the first being a hot summer day around 5:00 in the afternoon at Pitchfork Festival in 2015. Some bands seem to be more enjoyable in an outdoor festival setting while others are better in a theater. I liked PC at Pitchfork, but seeing them at the intimate Majestic Theater in Madison was way better. This band is so good. They rock hard and they are tight. Since their first album in 2011, they have had a prolific output of music including their own releases as well as collaborations. While their Garage-Punk album Sunbathing Animal was the first to get my attention, their recent release Wide Awake! and last year’s collaboration with Daniele Luppi, Milano, have shown that they are willing to keep pushing the envelope on their sound and style. This show featured ten songs from their new album with the other nine being from previous releases. Prior to this show, I was unfamiliar with Goat Girl, an all-female quartet from England. I listened to their debut album before the show and immediately liked it. They define their sound as Sci-Fi Fusion which may an actual genre or maybe just an English-tongue-in-cheek description. With stage names of Clottie Cream, Rosy Bones, Naima Jelly and L.E.D., I suspect the latter. They played a nice set and I enjoyed chatting with the lead singer (which is Clottie, I believe) and I bought their vinyl LP.

Day 22, Wednesday July 24, 2019

The day before, on my way from Washington D.C. to New York City, I caught up on my journal - posts that had been pending. When I reached New York, I felt a sense of peace, as I walked out of the station, the chaos gave me a strange sense of calmness - it felt like home. I took the day to relax unwind and catch up on my sleep, walked around briefly but the day was slow, I spent it reflecting, as I moved passed crowds - wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

I woke up the next morning and made my way to Long Island City, to visit Travis Tinney, director of development at ACE. The Association of Community Employment Programs for the Homeless (ACE) works with homeless men and women throughout New York City. It provided these individuals with job training, work experience, and a lifetime support network. Their main aim is to help these individuals achieve their goals and gain economic independence. I went through a brochure near the waiting area, as I waited for Travis, that gave me a fair background on the organization. I cannot begin to tell you how inspiring my meeting with Travis really was - we shared many notes, on the situation at both ends, in New York and in Karachi. I had so many question for him - I was truly intrigued at the success of the program as he had explained. Every city, every community, should have such programs, that help individual build themselves a better world - sometimes all it takes is ONE opportunity to change your life - to change a life. I am going to go to the graduation of these wonderful individuals that choose to change their life, with the help of ACE and hear their stories first hand - I cannot wait!

I had my last therapy session with Nancy, though I am glad I was getting a chance to thank her and say good bye. As I waited, I got there a little early, and skimmed through the pages of the books the lay in front of me - every page I opened was a conversation on its own - signs from the universe as I would call them. Though my meetings with Nancy were short, yet immensely detailed - I felt our conversation gave me a great deal of calmness and clarity. I am sincerely thankful for her direction not only personally but also professionally. I left her space with a exchange of small, which was so much more from her part, a book by Thich Nhat Hanh on mindfulness and details about the NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study. This which I thought, was definitely (hopefully) not the end to our many more conversations.  Next stop was to fill Abbie, in on my week and to get the schedule for the next and final week. We walked over from Apexart, to a coffee shop in the vicinity - our now weekly ritual. I am always about filling Abbie in on what I was upto and how each scheduled activity went, considering she is the one who puts it together with so much love - and I ask her every time, if she has been where she is sending me on my next adventure (the answer is usually a negative - tsk Abbie, we must do something about that - hahaha!!)

I was meeting Elizabeth later in Brooklyn, she was to accompany me to volunteer at Books through Bars at Freebird Books & Goods. Again, I had done zero homework or read up on the activity, and I thought I would learn more when I got there (being in the moment - taking one thing at a time - as I had begun to call it - worked out great!). It was small space underground - a little curious library. It had shelves from right to left, top to bottom, all around, organised according to genre or subject. The process was fairly simple, we pulled out a letter from one of the prisoners, based on the letter, we put together the closest, if not the exact request, weighed it and packed it away, with stamps and details that were added to the package. It was the most humble experience, it was almost like we were assisting these prisoners to escape the walls that held them captive by giving them a whole world that they had asked for through these books that were donated and shelved in this little space. It was such a beautiful thought - that unfortunately had never crossed my mind. I

 also need to mention that the clouds on this day were breathtaking!

Elizabeth and I walked down and found a place to sit down and chat some more. We talked about a lot of things, though we had not interated much during the course of my fellowship - strangely it felt like this was not our first meeting - it was oddly very comfortable (I would have to thank her for her simplicity and down to earth nature - I found it rather easy conversing as we sat and walked down the streets of Brooklyn). We also made a stop over at the Brooklyn Heights Promenade (if I remember clearly), but I clearly remember the view - Manhattan lit in the distance - it was stunning. 

This indeed was a great welcome back to New York City - the break was needed, for me to come back and appreciate what all it really had to offer.
