HOW DID IT END?
How is it that Steve's departure only drove you further apart? How was it possible that the only thing left between you after all was hatred for each other? Maybe these questions could be answered in a therapy session or in a night together.
bucky x fem!reader (angst, smut with plot, lovers to enemies to lovers) + no use of y/n. english isn't my first language (!)
—James, condition of your release, session now.
You looked at Bucky and he looked back at you, pressing his lips together and starting to walk after his therapist, annoyed.
—You too, young lady.
—That's okay, I can wait here with Sam.
—It wasn't a request. Sam, you have front-row seats for the show if you like—. The demanding tone in her voice surprised you and you had no choice but to follow her.
The therapist sat down at the table and opened her notebook. You and Bucky were at the other side of the table, sitting next to each other and in front of the woman. You didn't look at each other, you had not even shared a word. Sam, who was leaning against the wall behind the therapist, looked at both of you and shook his head. Steve was right when he said that you were both equally stubborn.
—So, who would like to start?
—I don't even know what I'm doing here. This is ridiculous.
—Yeah, I agree —. Bucky added.
—See? Making progress already —. She waited a few seconds to see if either of you would like to talk but you and Bucky remained silent. Dr. Raynor sighed, if it was already difficult to deal with him alone, it would be twice as difficult to deal not only with Bucky but also with a copy of him as a woman. —It is my job to make sure you're okay. And yeah, this may be slightly unprofessional but it's the only way that I can see if you're getting over whatever's eating at you.
You huffed a laugh and Bucky rolled his eyes. Whatever's eating at you? What could possibly be eating at you? There was nothing that-
—So, why don't you both start by telling me what kind of relationship you had with Steve Rogers?
Your expression changed completely when you heard his name. Bucky looked at you out of the corner of his eyes, Sam's eyes also went to you as he tensed his back when Dr. Raynow brought Steve up out of nowhere. Bucky decided to start talking but you couldn't hear what he was saying, you could only focus on how tense your jaw was, the knot in your stomach, and all the anger you were feeling.
Just as it was a relief for Bucky to think and talk about Steve, it hurt you. There was never anything romantic about your friendship with Steve, it was purely based on your devotion to him and your mutual admiration and respect.
When you lost Bucky and Steve crashed into the ice, you had no reason to live but before your heart stopped beating, Howard Stark found you and injected you with the serum. And when you woke up there was only Steve, seventy years later and just as confused as you, living in a century that did not belong to you.
You were together during the whole process of readjusting to your new lives. For Steve, you joined a group of people who called themselves the Avengers and fought against the god of mischief in New York. For Steve, you were almost killed by a robot in Sokovia. For Steve, you fought the Winter Soldier. For Steve, you sided against Tony Stark, the son of the man who brought you back to life, and for Steve, you fought, lost, fought again, and won against Thanos.
They say there is no worse heartbreak than that caused by a friend and Steve Rogers stole a piece of your heart when he left.
—Thank you, James. What can you tell us about Steve? —Dr. Raynor asked you.
You shook your head, your eyes fixed on one spot. The feeling of betrayal when Steve didn't return within the five seconds set by Bruce still haunted you. —I will never forgive him.
Bucky shook his head as well, he turned to look at you. —You know, Dr. Raynor? I've met her for more than seventy years now and one thing that hasn't changed about her is how selfish she is.
—James, we are not here to make value judgments about the feelings experienced by the other person.
The condescending tone in Bucky's voice made you close your eyes and take a deep breath before you talked. —You were captured by HYDRA, tried to kill us, then went into cryogenic sleep and disappeared with the snap. I don't expect you to understand what I'm going through since you never lost Steve because you never had him.
—He was my best friend! —Bucky raised his tone and turned in his chair to look at you.
—You don't even remember a single thing of him before he became Captain America!
Sam called your name. That wasn't Bucky's fault.
—He left because that was the life he fought so many years for! That's the life Steve deserved!
—He was my best friend too! We were together all these years while you were killing people and I had to watch him go! —You did the same as him. That was the first time you looked at each other since the session started and you were yelling at each other. Sam didn't miss any part of the argument, he was with his arms crossed and paying attention to everything you were saying to each other. How could two people who had loved each other so much end up like this?
—Okay, that's enough —. The doctor stopped you before it went any further. You and Bucky rested your backs on the chair again, defeated, and your eyes focused on the therapist. —Since this isn't working, we're going to do an exercise. It's something I use with couples when they're trying to figure out what kind of life they wanna built together —. The doctor added. Bucky rolled his eyes and you closed yours while shaking your head.
—You are acting as if you were never a couple —Sam said.
—Back in 1940.
—Yeah, eighty-two years ago.
You both said at the same time.
—Come on, turn around, look at each other.
Both of you hesitated for a few seconds but finally turned to face each other. His blue eyes were fixed on yours, it was difficult to keep eye contact with him.
—The exercise is called Everytime I look at you and consists of saying something that you feel or see in the other person every time you look at them. Why don't you start?
As you looked at Bucky, you could see the young soldier, wearing his new uniform proudly and hanging a copy of his dog tag around your neck. Looking into Bucky's eyes you felt again the last kiss he gave you before falling from the train, you heard his last laugh before he was brainwashed by HYDRA, you could even feel the caress of his fingers on your skin before the vibranium covered one of his hands.
—Every time I look at you, you have that lost puppy look on your face, asking for people's sympathy. I can't even look at you because every time I do, your mere presence reminds me that Steve's no longer here and it makes me want to fucking die, and sometimes I wish-
Sam called your name and you stopped talking before you could finish the sentence. Bucky's eyes never left yours. You were saying all that to his face.
—Let her finish, Sam —. Dr. Raynor said.
There was a silence.
—And sometimes I wish you were gone instead of him.
As Bucky looked at you, he could see the young lady he fell in love with even though everything he remembered about her was gone. The sparkle in that girl's eyes could no longer be found in yours, but he couldn't forget how your eyes shone as he wrapped his arms around your waist to dance. Bucky did not forget the sound of your laughter when he told you that he would marry you after the war, even though he was totally serious.
—Every time I look at you I don't recognize you. You have changed for the worse and I'm not sure if I like this version of you. You are mean, you don't allow people to get close to you and you hide and say that it's Steve's fault for leaving. But let me just say...
Bucky could see how you dealt with sadness by turning it into anger, he knew it because he did the same thing. Your jaw tightened and you closed your fists so hard that your fingernails dug into the palms of your hands. You didn't want him to say it, but at the same time, you couldn't wait to hear it.
—... that being a bitch isn't going to bring him back.
As soon as Bucky finished the sentence, you got up from the chair and left the room slamming the door. He didn't react to you leaving, he just sat in the chair asking himself the same question as Sam. How did you come to this? How could two people who had loved each other so much end up like this? Sam tried to go after you but he could not keep up with your super soldier speed so he went back to the police station with Bucky and gave him the same look of disappointment that Steve would have given him.
That same night someone knocked on your front door.
You thought it would be Sam because he had been calling you nonstop since you left and you had been ignoring him all day long but when you opened the door, you found Bucky instead.
He took a step closer to you to go inside your house and your hand connected firmly with his cheek. The skin on his face burned right where you had hit him and your body was blocking the doorway. He was just as angry as you were so he gave you a strong push on your shoulders. You managed to keep your balance and he managed to get inside the house and close the door behind him.
Bucky towered you with a challenging attitude, keeping eye contact while forcing you to take a few steps backward. You, despite being shorter than him, did not lower your head. Your breathing was heavy, the tension was too much, you wanted to hit him again and you wanted to say worse things to him than what you said in the therapy session.
When you raised your hand to slap him again, he grabbed your arm with his vibranium hand and squeezed hard enough for it to hurt but you did not give him the pleasure of expressing the pain. The tension was overwhelming. There were only two ways to solve this, either he would let go of your arm and start a fight that wouldn't end until both of you were on the floor exhausted and bleeding, or...
Your bodies collided as you pressed your lips together. Bucky held your face with both hands while his lips devoured yours as your hands pulled on the hem of his shirt. He lifted his arms so you could take it off and in that moment you took a few seconds to admire his well-defined abs. He leaned in for another kiss but you pushed him by his shoulder, strong enough for his back to hit against a wall of your house and crack it. Before he could complain, you connected your lips with his again.
Bucky's fingers closed around your neck as a response. Your mouth opened against his lips, trying to get the air that he was keeping from reaching your lungs and Bucky's tongue went pass your lips.
You took a big breath of air once he let go of your neck and he began to unbutton your jeans. He would never admit it but he made sure that you were okay and that he had not taken it too far, especially when your hands went to his shoulders to keep your balance due to the dizziness. And when Bucky thought he had control over you, your fingernails slid painfully from his shoulders to his abdomen and he groaned.
Bucky threw his head back against the wall once your finger sneaked into his jeans and wrapped around his cock. You moved your hand cruelly slow, he had his eyes closed as he bit his lower lip to hold back his moans. You ran your tongue along his collarbone until you reached his earlobe. —I fucking despise you —. You whispered in his ear. He let out a moan and immediately clenched his jaw again. You felt his hips thrust into your hand.
—Fucking same, doll —. Bucky muttered through gritted teeth.
He brought his hands to your ass and squeezed it as he helped you to wrap your legs around his body. Your lips met again as he walked you to the big wooden table in your living room where he helped you to lie down. Bucky pulled his jeans down enough to free his hard cock while you opened your legs to him. He noticed the wet spot on your panties and you noticed the red marks that your fingernails had carved on his chest. As he pulled your panties to the side, your fingers ran over those marks and Bucky hissed.
The head of his cock was more than enough to stretch you open. You repositioned yourself at the table, now sitting up on your elbows to watch as he pushed himself inside of you. You thought he would give you a few seconds to get used to the feeling, but he didn't stop until he was balls deep inside you.
—Now you take it. Make it up for that attitude —. You whined at his words and Bucky rested his forehead against yours while his hips thrusted into yours.
You encircled your legs around his waist and hooked your ankles over the swell of his ass while he kept slamming his hips into you. At that point you couldn't even think straight, he was hitting all the right spots to make your mind foggy. His pace remained fast and hard, and you thought about the serum running through your veins and how you both could keep up with that pace all night long.
Bucky tucked his head into your neck and whispered the filthiest words into your ear, his hands were on your thighs, squeezing your flesh lustfully, he pulled his dick all way out and then pushed in again until his balls were against your pussy. Your fingers tugged his brown hair at the root, getting moans from him because of your tight grip as it encouraged him to fuck you even harder. If that was how hating you felt, he wanted to hate you for all eternity.
When he heard you moaning and whimpering uncontrollably, when your legs fought to close and squeezed his body, when he felt your nails digging into the skin of his back, Bucky pushed your legs up, hooking your legs over his shoulders, and kept fucking you in that position until it became harder and harder for him to keep going because of the tightness of your pussy. You came screaming his name and spasming around him, Bucky came a few seconds later, with a deep groan that made his chest vibrate and emptying himself inside you.
The next morning, when his alarm went off, Bucky was alone in your bed. He took his time to take a shower and grab something from your kitchen for breakfast before he left. Bucky walked to his therapist's office, trying not to give much importance to what happened last night and especially trying not to think about all the horrible things you said to each other earlier that day in front of Sam and Dr. Raynor.
When he entered the office, Dr. Raynor was not alone. Bucky almost apologized and closed the door again, thinking he interrupted someone's session, but then you turned around in your chair and looked at him. He looked back at you, surprised, from the doorway.
You were already inside, now it was up to him to decide whether to go in with you. Bucky didn't have to think about it, he closed the door behind him and sat down in the chair next to you. You wanted to give yourselves a chance, for your sake, for Steve's sake, and for trying to get back what you two once had.
—Let's try again, shall we? —Dr. Raynor asked with a smile.

Just Friends: Big News
My warnings are not exhaustive but be aware this is a dark fic and may include potentially triggering topics. Please use your common sense when consuming content. I am not responsible for your decisions.
Character: Bucky Barnes
masterlist
Summary: You have a surprise for Bucky.
It’s giving
As usual, I would appreciate any and all feedback. I’m happy to once more go on this adventure with all of you! Thank you in advance for your comments and for reblogging ❤️
“Hey!” You bounce up to the table. It’s funny how Bucky can look so intent. So gloomy in the midst of the bustling cafe. He sits up as he puts his phone down on the table. “I’m sorry I’m late. I got great news!”
“Oh?” His brows lower, “well, you’re double sugar frappa-whatever is melting.”
He points across the table as you sit and roll your eyes.
“If you tried it, you wouldn’t be making fun of me. They are delicious!” You put your purse in your lap and take a long slurp through the straw. You pop your lips off and let out and ‘ahhhhh’. You smile at him as he gives you that look.
“I don’t take sugar in my coffee and you barely take coffee in your sugar,” he drones.
You giggle. He's always so grumpy about the smallest things.
“News?” He prompts dully.
“Right,” you wiggle in your seat. “I got you a date!”
He twitches and tilts his head, “a date?” He gives you a cautious look and shifts in his seat. “Uh...”
“Yes! This lawyer lady I know. I met her at a trivia night way back and added her on Insta. Well, I saw her post the other day and I was like how did I not think of this before?”
“Lawyer?” He mutters. “I... you’re setting me up with a stranger?”
“It’s a blind date. It’s fun. She’s really established and smart and beautiful. Oh my god, she posted this picture of her in a bikini—I could never wear something like that.” You get your phone out and he sighs.
“Wait, why did you do that?” He grits.
You look above the screen at him, “well, you said the other day that you get lonely. That’s why you have Alpine, right? And she’s so sweeeeet,” you drag out the word in adoration, “but you need someone you can talk to. Who can talk back.”
“We talk,” he insists.
“Yes, but we’re friends. You need someone your own age. Or closer to.”
“Wait, how old is she?” He wonders.
“Aha, you’re interested,” you point at him accusatorily.
“I’m asking questions.”
“Right, she’s... fifty something? She doesn’t look it. Like you. You don’t look... uh... 1917... carry the one...”
“Stop that,” he demands. “I know how goddamn old I am.”
“Ha, yeah, sorry, I...” you scroll through your Insta friends. “Here!” You turn the phone to him and beam a smile in his direction. He glances at it for a split second and shrugs. He sits back and drinks his coffee.
“I’m not really... in that scene,” he says.
“You should get out there! I mean, you can’t bring Sam and Steve to dinner all the time. You need someone--”
“Is this what it’s about? Because I showed up at the restaurant?” He asks.
“No, it’s-- I’m being a friend. You two are so alike and she loves old movies and motorcycles. I could never! I'd fall off or not tie my helmet right,” you chuckle.
“Dreamy,” he growls.
“Bucky,” you whine back. “You gotta get out and have some fun.”
“We have fun,” he counters.
“We do and that’s awesome—Oh, okay, how about, I got an idea! A double date.”
“A double—you have... a boyfriend?” He taps the porcelain cup with his metal fingertip.
“Ha, no way. But I could find someone to come along. Just so you’re not alone. There’s a few guys at the restaurant I’m sure would go for a free meal or I mean I know other cute girls. I’m not picky.”
He closes his eyes and a line forms between his brows. He pinches his nose and squares his shoulders. “Where the hell did you come up with the idea that I wanted to date?”
“I...” you sit back and your smile falls. His blue eyes flick open as he drops his hand. The dimple in his cheek ticks. “I’m sorry, I thought it was—I was... trying to be a good friend.”
He stares at you and the stone slowly eases from his jaw. He looks down and back up. He huffs.
“I’m sorry, dreamy,” he says, “it’s just been a while for me. Not that I haven’t thought of it, you know? But I don’t know if I’m ready for that.” He shakes his head and glances around the cafe. “The last time I dance with a dame was a goddamn USO tour in 1945.”
That hits you like a sixteen-wheeler. You didn’t know that. You didn’t think of it. He’s been in this world for a while and he’s handsome and a superhero! You just though he’d have lots of people interested. Charlize sure seemed excited when you asked.
“And now you’re looking at me like I’m a loser because I haven’t kissed a gal in 80 years--”
“No, you’re not a loser. If you are, then I am.”
“Come on, you don’t gotta--”
“Really. I never kissed anyone. Not lying.”
He shakes his head and scoffs, “oh no, you’re not lying to make me feel better.”
You put on your most sober face, “Bucky, I swear,” your cheeks burn and you put your hands on your neck. “I mean... it would be nice I’m sure but it just never came up.” He looks at you quietly. You squirm. “I know you can hear that I’m telling the truth.”
“Yeah, I know,” he accepts at last. He crosses his arms and clicks his tongue, “fine. If you’re going to suffer through it, I will too.” He looks away as his jaw tenses, “if you’re going to keep pulling that puppy dog face, one day, it’s gonna wear off.”
“Yes! Bucky’s got a date! Bucky’s got a date!” You sing out of tune.
“Stop,” he snarls and narrows his eyes at you. You wince and giggle.
“Yay!” You put your hands up in a demure celebration and he tuts.
“You’re so cheesy,” he sneers.
“And you’re a party pooper. No moping on date night, got it?” You try to put on a stern face and he squints even harder. Finally, he cracks and gives a chuckle.
“You’re ridiculous,” he sniffs. “You and tough, don’t go together.”

“I shouldn’t have said any of that. I know you care about him. I’m sorry.”
A tense silence began to grow between you two. So much unsaid, but you couldn’t keep this up much longer.
It’d been a long two years without Steve, and these past few months since he’d been back had been difficult to say the least.
“He misses you, ya know. We both do..”
“Sweetheart,” he whispered, his thumb stroking your hand in his before you pulled it away, mindlessly clenching your hand into a fist before you stretched it out, working to get the feeling of his touch off your skin.
“Yeah, I know,” you said a bit harshly before you cleared your throat. “I should grab his bag.”
You moved to go upstairs to get Bucky’s stuff from the room you’d claimed last night, but stopped a little ways up the steps. “I really am sorry, Steve,” you said once more.
He watched you continue up the stairs, leaving him to his thoughts once again. “So am I,” he offered to no one.
-
He hated the animosity between the two of you. Hated how reactive you were to his touch, how easily he could set you off, and not in the way he used to. He wanted things to be different, to go back to the way it was before. But he also knew he wasn’t ready. The last thing he wanted to do was to hurt either of you, though he knew he already had.
He thought going away was for the better. You and Bucky were happy, and though you’d talked about all of you coming together, making things official, he couldn’t wrap his head around the idea. It seemed too complicated, and he still had things he needed to work out on his own.
It was only supposed to be a few months away, and he’d promised to stay in touch. But months turned into years and not even five months after he’d gone he had ditched his old phone. No one but Sam and Nat had his new number and they kept it to themselves. He was working, he’d tell himself, trying to make himself feel better, though he knew he could head home anytime he wanted. He checked his email often, but he couldn’t find it in him to respond to you. Eventually, the messages stopped coming... He missed your writings, your updates, your concern, but he couldn’t reach out to you to let you know that.
A few months ago, after a call from Sam, he was on his way back to the states. Back to the compound. Back to you.
Bucky had welcomed him with open arms, but you were, rightfully, cold.
Distant.
He wasn’t used to that coming from you, but he couldn’t say he hadn’t expected it.
It took some time before things felt cordial between you, and a bit longer still before things felt friendly. And then, two weeks ago, he had screwed up.
He knew he wasn’t ready for you, his mind wasn’t in the right place for a relationship, but when he found you in Bucky’s bed, sulking and missing him while he was away with Sam on a mission, he couldn’t stop himself from wanting to comfort you.
Talking turned into innocent touching, which turned to cuddling, that led to kissing, and before he knew what he was doing, you were a moaning mess beneath him as he took you apart. Over and over until you’d passed out.
He took care of you then, too. Cleaned you up before tucking you into Bucky’s bed. A part of him wanted to stay, to be there when you woke up, but a stronger part told him to go before he made matters worse.
The next day you met him in the kitchen.
The look on your face when he told you the previous night had been a mistake was one he’d never forget. The look of hurt and shock at his words ate him up inside. But he knew it was for the better. For now.
“It isn’t about you or Bucky, it’s about me. I’m sorry, I am. But I’m not ready to be involved right now. And it’s not that I don’t want to, it’s just-”
“I get it, Steve. It’s just, it’s been two and a half years. I thought… I don’t know what I thought. I’m sorry. I’m not trying to rush you into anything. I know you’ve been dealing with a lot, and I know that’s an understatement, I just… I guess I just missed you,” you admitted quietly.
“I missed you, too.”
“I’m not gonna stand here and pretend I know what you’re going through, because I don’t. But this is hard for us, too. It’s not easy to be around you. To have to stop myself from just coming up to you like I used to. To have to stop myself from being so goddamn angry at you for leaving so easily in the first place, without a word to either of us. Because I am mad. And I’m hurt. And not just for me, for Bucky, too. Because he doesn’t have it in him to be upset at you,” your voice wavers in your emotion, “but he has every damn right to be. I know you’re going through a lot, but you’ve put us through a lot, too. And maybe you’re right, maybe last night was a mistake. But it’s not mine. I don’t regret it. I know how I feel about you. But I also know you’re not ready. So, maybe keeping our distance is for the best right now.”
He took a second, absorbing all of what you said before he agreed. “Yeah,” he nodded solemnly, “we should.”
-
You weren’t sure what you were expecting that night, but his readiness to agree with you was not it. Some part had been hoping he’d fight you on it. Say he didn’t want to keep the distance, that he wanted you, that he was sorry for the way he left, sorry for the hurt he caused the both of you, that he’d pull you into him and say he’d had enough time and he wasn’t scared anymore and he wants to be with you both. Both you got nothing. Nothing but a stupidly sad pout and a nod.
You had blinked at him, and he didn’t have the heart to look back up at you. That was for the better, you’ve since realized, because you’d had to turn away before you let the tears that burned in your eyes slip.
It’d been two weeks, and of course you told Bucky everything as soon as he was settled from his mission. He listened intently, talked everything out with you, held you when you couldn’t help but cry again about it all. Bucky understood. It wasn’t like he was just some ex you could get over. He was Steve.
“I know it hurts,” he had said, “but he’ll have to find his way into this on his own if he really wants to. He says he has things to figure out on his own, then we just gotta let him. He knows we’re here. He’ll come when he’s ready.”
Bucky’s words ring in your ear as you head up to get his stuff from the room. You can hear the water running from his shower downstairs already. You’re beyond glad he’s safe - you know you were a complete disaster worrying about him all night - and you’re so thankful Steve was there for him when you couldn’t be. You just wish more than anything you could be in their combined embrace right now; you know you aren’t the only one who needs it. You can still feel Steve’s touch on your hand as you gather yours and Bucky’s things, and your stomach twists as your heart aches and your thoughts worry. You’re moving fast, bordering on desperate to get back to Bucky - make sure he really is okay, to hold him close and not let him go for the rest of the night, but not fast enough to outrun the thoughts that keep coming back to Steve.
Bucky says he’ll come when he’s ready…What if he decides he’s never gonna be?

Duffle bag in hand, you run all the way back to Bucky’s cabin, which was a lot farther then you thought. You run in and toss your bag on the couch.
“Bucky?” You call, even though you know he isn’t here. You run back outside.
“Steve!” You yell. You run around the forest yelling his name for what seems like forever. You come across a group of cabins, sitting on one of the porches you see Steve, two red heads, another guy, and a brunette.
“Steve!” You speak desperately.
“Y/N?” He gets up and walks over to you, confused. “What’s going on?”
Before you can answer, the scarier looking red head speaks up, “What the hell is a human doing in here?”
“There’s no time for that!” You pant.
Steve puts his hands on your shoulders, “Y/N, what’s going on?”
“It’s Bucky, he’s gone! H-he was supposed to be waiting for me at the edge of the woods but when I got back, he was gone and there was a blood where I had last seen him. I-I can’t find him a-and-”
“Y/N, deep breath. It’s okay, we’ll find him. I think I already know where he is.” Steve cuts you off.
You take a deep breath to calm your nerves. “How can you know what happened?”
“A regular person couldn’t have taken him; it would have to be another werewolf.”
“Rumlow,” the other man growls.
“Who’s Rumlow?” You ask, confused.
Steve explains that he’s the leader of the other pack, that Bucky and him are rivels. You also learn the other man is Sam, the other people in the pack are Clint, Wanda, Natasha, Kate, Yelena, and Peggy. You explain how you met Bucky.
“You mean to tell me Barnes didn’t kill you?” Natasha grins and tilts her head. “Did he happen to sniff you?”
“Yeah, he buried his face in my neck,” you laugh.
“Oh my god!” Sam laughs, “You’re Bucky’s mate!”
Your eyes widen. “What?”
“Werewolf's can only smell their mate,” Peggy, Steve’s mate pipes up.
“B-But that’s impossible, I’m human, there’s no way I’m his mate,” you feel like you’re dreaming, this whole day so surreal.
“I’m human.” Peggy says.
“Really?”
“Oh yeah, it took me a while to wrap my head around it too. But once I did, everything fell into place.” She smiles and looks at Steve, she’s in his lap. He looks back at her with heart eyes.
“How does the whole claiming, marking, and rut thing work though?” You ask, you have headache at this point.
“You have to be claimed in front of the pack, if you weren’t human then it could just be you and Bucky but the pack needs to see it happen to officially welcome you.” She explains.
“Is that what you did?” She nods. There’s rustling in the woods behind you, you all turn to see the other man, Clint, running towards the cabin in his wolf form. At the last second, he transforms into his human form.
“I found drag marks leading to Rumlow’s camp,” he pants.
Steve and Sam jump up, “Let’s go,” Steve says. “You girls stay here.”
“Wait but-”
“No, Y/N, wait here while we check it out,” Steve interrupts you.
“But Steve-”
“If they find out you’re Bucky’s mate, they’ll kill you without a second thought. Stay. Here.” You nod.
As the boys leave, you plop back into your seat and put your face in your hands. “I can’t help but think this is all my fault,” you mutter.
“I mean it kind of is,” Yelena’s Russan voice answers.
“Lena!” Natasha, her sister, scolds.
“Look, Barnes is strong, he’ll make it out alive and then you will be reunited again,” Yelena adds, gentler this time.
“Yeah, but what happens then? Do I just drop everything to be with Bucky? I can’t just drop everything, my life I-”
“Y/N, calm down, let's just focus on bringing Bucky home, okay?” Natasha cuts you off. You nod.
The boys come running back.
“He’s there,” Sam pants.
“What’s the plan? How can I help?” You ask, frantically.
“You,” Steve grabs your shoulders. “Need to go to Bucky’s cabin and mark it with your scent.”
“Huh?” You ask with a dumbfound look on your face.
“He has a plan, but when he gets loose, he’ll be a feral alpha wanting nothing more then to claim his mate.” Steve answers. “Go.”
You look at everyone unsure and worried. Natasha stands up.
“Go, it’ll be okay.” She gives you a reassuring smile.
As you walk back to his cabin you can’t help but spiral in worry. What if he doesn’t like you or make it back safe? What will your parents and friends say, will they think you’re crazy? Every single ‘what if’ runs through your mind, but every time Bucky crosses your mind, it’s like a soft comforting presence settles over you.
Just as you reach the cabin’s front porch, the sound of a twig snaping breaks you out of your thoughts. You tense when you hear a growl, one that sounds nothing like Bucky. On instinct you dart into the cabin, shutting the door just in time.
Looking out the window you see a wild haired wolf, chipped teeth, and scary looking. You slide down the wall, the weight of everything finally catching up with you. You break down in tears, yearning for the one person who can make things better.
Once you finally calm down you set about ‘marking’ his cabin with your scent. You throw clothes here and there, lay in his bed and couch, did basically anything you could think of to make the place smell like you.
The next couple of days are spent twiddling your thumbs, not so patiently waiting. When finally on the second night you’re woken by a familiar growl. Looking over at the owner of the noise, you see two steel blue eyes shining in the moon light staring back at you. A shiver runs down your spine.
Bucky.

Bucky asked you to help him study for an upcoming exam and you naturally jumped at the chance. It was a good excuse to spend time with him. When he suggested his room for the session, you questioned exactly how much studying you'd accomplish. He argued that he would've offered to use the common room, but there wasn't much privacy or quiet with the guys constantly going in and out. And with Steve in class, the two of you had the bedroom to yourselves.
It didn't stop a few of the guys from whistling as Bucky took you upstairs.
"Fuck off! We're studying!" he called back as you giggled.
"I know you're into Science, but I didn't think Anatomy was your thing!" Sam yelled before Bucky shut the door.
Oh, it's very much his thing.
"I think they're jealous because you're dating me," he said, pulling you into his arms so you could wrap your arms around his neck.
"They are not," you laughed a little. The fraternity brothers you met so far were all nice, which you were thankful for. "And even if they are, I'm only interested in you."
Only one guy outside of Bucky had hit on you and you made it clear that you weren't looking to date around.
A touch of pink showed in his cheeks, but he smiled confidently. "Good because they're animals. All of them," he chuckled.
"You may be in a house of animals, but at least you don't live like one."
Despite the stereotype that many fraternity members were sloppy pigs, Bucky and Steve kept their room relatively clean. The little touches of home with posters, knickknacks, and pictures of their families gave you a glimpse of the past and their childhood friendship. The boxing gloves and science books on your boyfriend's side of the room showed you the present.
What does the future look like?
"I'll be sure not to act like an animal until after we study. I'll behave," he promised when you raised an eyebrow. "And this isn't like the last time when I got everything done before we met up. Honest."
"If you say so," you smiled.
Overall, Bucky kept his word as you helped him make his flashcards. He only snuck in a couple of kisses here and there which he kept relatively innocent. You were almost on the last one when he asked you to go through them on his bed. With you in his lap.
"Me in your lap? We know how that ends," you argued.
It always ended the same way. Not that you were going to complain. There was still plenty of time before Steve got back from class.
"But I behaved," Bucky stated as you put the marker down, the corners of his eyes crinkling when you tried not to smile back. "And my lap is much more comfortable than this bed. Trust me."
"You did behave," you agreed as he took your hand and helped you up from the desk chair. "But I don't know. Your bed feels just fine to me," you added to tease him a bit.
"A 'just fine' bed versus my very good lap?" he asked, taking a seat on his bed and running his hands along your hips. "What do I need to do to convince you?"
Keep touching me like that and I'll melt.
You suddenly had an idea, setting the cards by his pillow. "You don't need to convince me, but why don't we make things interesting?"
An intriguing expression crossed his face as his hands froze, much to your disappointment. "Interesting? How?"
I hope he likes this idea.
"I could…" you tried to keep your voice light as you batted your eyes and prayed you looked enticing. "Keep you warm?"
His blue eyes darkened instantly at your suggestion, but he smirked as he considered it. "How exactly do you wanna keep me warm?" he asked, pulling you a fraction closer. "Tell me how."
He's going to make me say it.
Slowly inhaling, you tried not to stumble over your words. "I want your cock inside me while we go over the flashcards," you said, mentally patting yourself on the back for keeping your voice even when your knees were ready to buckle. "Please, Titan. Let me sit on it?"
The audible hitch in his breath was a win. "Since you asked so nicely, Starshine," he breathed.
Bucky didn't hesitate to reach under your skirt and hook his fingers through the waistband of your underwear. You shivered as they brushed along your flesh, his eyes on yours as he pulled the fabric down. Your neck and face warmed under his gaze, your mind still not used to the eye contact this man enjoyed maintaining. But your body was so responsive to his, already wet and aching.
"So, I'll get to appreciate the view while you help me?" he asked, unbuttoning his jeans as you stepped out of your underwear.
You shook your head before he lowered his pants and boxers enough to take his cock out. Your mouth watered as he wrapped his hand around it, watching it swell under his touch. He was thick when he wasn't hard and your core clenched knowing he was seconds away from stretching you with the length of him. "I think I'm the one appreciating the view," you simpered, barely able to resist putting your hand over his.
"You can look all you want," he said, settling back on the bed and motioning for you to join him. "It's yours."
He helped guide you to straddle him once you were close enough, closing the gap between you two to press your lips together. Your heart swelled as you kissed him back. His kiss was steadfast like always, each soft drag of his lips fueling the fire within you. But he stopped you before you could lower yourself down to take him in.
"Let me stretch you a bit first. I don't want you hurting later."
Your heart went from swelling to nearly bursting. While quickies were fun, Bucky only rushed when he absolutely had to. "Please, touch me," you whispered.
His thick fingers parted your folds to dip one inside, making you whine and clench around him. Letting him explore your body was easy. It always was. Opening your heart to him was just as simple and that should've given you pause. Both of you were young and still figuring out your paths, but everything about Bucky told you to take the plunge.
Just keep holding my hand as we fall.
Your eyes slipped shut as he added another finger and peppered kisses along your jaw. "I still don't get how you want me," you said, your eyes snapping open. You hadn't meant to blurt that out and didn't want to ruin the heated moment. "I don't know why I said that. I just meant-"
"You don't get it?" he asked with a frown, making you whimper as he took his fingers out. "You want a list of reasons why?"
"No, Bucky," you replied, but secretly, deep down also wanted a little praise. You just didn't want to ask for it, especially when there was no reason for him to give it to you.
"I'll give you one anyway so you know I'm serious," he said, keeping you hovering above his cock as he licked his fingers clean. The sight made you tremble. "You're delicious."
"That doesn't count as a reason," you teased, though you enjoyed hearing it.
"It counts," he winked. "You're smart. One of the brightest people I've ever met."
You closed your eyes again when he kissed your left cheek, your heart racing at the compliment. "Coming from a genius," you said.
"Hey. I'm complimenting you, not the other way around," he said, brushing his lips against your other cheek. "You're beautiful. I couldn't take my eyes off you when we met. I still can't."
I couldn't take my eyes off you either.
"You take the time to talk to me about my interests, like boxing, or my day. And you make sure I'm not getting lost in my own head most days," he smiled gently as you opened your eyes. "I'm not ashamed to say I'm crazy about you."
"I'm crazy about you, too," you whispered.
Thank you.
"And, fuck, you feel perfect," he moaned, making you whimper as he helped you slowly sink down. It was an almost torturous pace as you stretched to accommodate him before he buried himself to the hilt. He felt perfect. He fit so well with you.
"Perfect," you sighed.
"You know," Bucky said after a moment. "I think you suggested this to punish me."
Your boyfriend pouted as you looked at him. He had an actual pout on his ridiculously handsome face. You wondered how much he got away with growing up giving people that look.
Probably everyone.
"How is this punishing you?" you asked, keeping your breathing even possible as you ran a hand through his hair. It was tough to concentrate with him inside you since he felt so good.
"Because I need you," he groaned, like it pained him to not thrust up into you. "I don't know how long I can stay still."
Neither do I.
You cupped Bucky's face with your hands, loving the way he leaned into your touch. "How about we focus on studying, then you can have me?" you suggested, kissing him gently before you settled back.
With a frustrated grunt, Bucky threw his head back. "Okay, but let me show you just how crazy I am about you first."
Careful not to jolt you, he reached over to where the cards were sitting. Instead of picking them up as you expected, he reached underneath his pillow and pulled out a small box. You almost avoided his deep blue eyes as he looked at you expectantly, your heart pounding so fast that you could hear the roaring rush of blood in your ears.
What is happening?
You gasped when he opened the box. It was a pendant made up of his fraternity letters. "Is this a lavalier?" you asked. You knew of the tradition. It was a sign of commitment and affection when a person gifted their significant other with their letters.
"It is. I was waiting for the right moment to give it to you," he said, glancing away for a second. Was he nervous? "And I realize asking while you're keeping me warm isn't exactly romantic and I'm sorry."
"You have nothing to apologize for," you said. If anything, the moment felt more real because it was spontaneous.
It feels a bit like love.
"You don't have to wear it if you don't want to," he said, kissing the corner of your mouth. "I know we haven't been dating for that long, but, well, you're my girl and I don't want anyone else. I haven't since you smiled at me at that party."
He wasn't playing fair at all by lightly shifting underneath you, the moment drawing a whine from you. Pure joy settled over you at his words. Wearing his letters wouldn't just show that you were his girl. It would show everyone that he was your guy.
Titan and Starshine.
"But if it's too soon-"
"I would love to wear your letters," you smiled, wanting to assure him the way he did for you moments ago.
He smiled back, his shoulders relaxing as he removed the necklace from the box. "You said you don't get how I want you," he said, slipping it around your neck to clasp it. The letters rested right over your heart, where they belonged. "But I feel lucky because you want me."
"How could I not want you?" you asked, kissing him tenderly and taking an extra second to savor it. "Would you like me to give you a list of reasons why you're the best guy for me?"
"Later," he smiled, wrapping his arms around your waist and glancing at his letters on your chest. "For now, I want you to keep me warm while you torture me by going over those fucking cards."
You giggled, the action making you tighten around him. "You did tell everyone I was here to study. Besides, flashcards are an effective method because it promotes active recall in the brain."
"I think we should make this a new study habit," he said, nipping your bottom lip with a playful grunt. "Because whenever I see them, I'll remember being inside you and want to do it all over again."
"I'll remember that, too."
And with his letters around your neck, you'd never forget that you were his girl.
How can Titan not be crazy about his Starshine? Love and thanks! ❤️

A Love as Sweet as Honey
Chapter 2
Pairing: Steve Rogers x Reader
word count: 3.4K
Warning: mentions of blood, migraine, little bit of fluff I guess, a little bit of Charlotte, Also a new character is added... 👀
A/N: Well look who decided to finish writing chapter 2 of ALASAH. This is just a filler chapter. It's kind of to show how Steve and Honey kind of look out for each other. Also this is kind of self-indulgent since I've been getting a bunch of migraines lately... lol Anyways, the next chapter is where it's at.
Series Masterlist
You stood by as the jet landed. The bright sunlight had you squinting as you finished getting your gear on. To your right is Mrs. B with a few more people that worked in the medbay. She was supposed to be on maternity leave but the mission had been harder than the team had imagined and they would need all hands on deck.
“You call me if you need anything.” She says as she moves to stand by you. She was always looking out for you. At first you thought it was just because you were friends with Steve but it was more than that. Maybe she could sense that you didn’t really have anyone you could count on. And although you weren’t sure how to show her you appreciated it you hoped she knew you did.
“I’ll be fine.”
“I know you will but if you need anything, call me.”
“I will, mom.” You rolled your eyes playfully but Mrs. B smiled proudly.
The rear cargo door opens and some agents are moving stretchers down the ramp. Mrs. B and her team rush over and begin to work. You give them a few minutes before grabbing your bag and heading into the jet to do your part. At the ramp Sam exits and he stops in front of you.
“Steve’s still in there.” He informs you.
“Is something wrong?”
“Some civilians and agents were hurt pretty badly. The mission failed and he’s beating himself up over it. You might want to give him a minute before going in there to get that case Doc.”
“Thanks for the heads up.”
Sam gives you a quick nod before heading into the compound. You take a deep breath and look back at the jet. While you were very understanding of needing space and time away from people, you didn’t think that this was good for Steve. So after another minute of thinking through how you would approach him, you decided to just go in and do your job.
The overhead lights are dimmed. The floor is littered with gauze, packaging and ripped uniforms. There’s caked up dirt and blood too. You try to ignore it and step over it as best as you can until you’re closer to the front of the jet. A lone figure sat in the dark. All slumped shoulders and head hanging low. Even as you sat next to him, Steve didn’t move.
“I heard about the mission I-“
“Please don’t say that it wasn’t my fault or that it was out of my control.” He murmurs. He’s completely defeated.
“I was going to say that I can’t imagine what you must be feeling. I think that you did your best.”
“People got hurt.” He replies with a clenched jaw.
“But they didn’t die.”
“But they could have.”
“And you got them to the people that could save their lives. Do you feel like you could have done more?” You tilt your head to look at him better.
“I could have done things differently.”
“I said more.”
Steve sighs as he runs a hand over his face and then shakes his head. “I don’t know that I could have.”
“Then you did your best. Sometimes your best isn’t good enough but you can’t blame yourself for it. You’ll kick ass next time.”
Steve nods but you can tell he doesn’t believe it.
You get up and head toward the chamber where hazardous materials are stored to grab the briefcase you came for. The whole reason for the mission in the first place. There’s some shuffling behind you and then laughter from Steve so you turn to find out what’s so funny.
“What?”
“You look like a rubber duck with that thing on.”
You looked down at your yellow hazmat suit. There was a hood you had covering your hair, gloves, a face mask and disposable shoe covers.
“I’m going to remember you called me a duck.” You smile as Steve huffs another laugh.
“Charlotte calls you a duck all the time.”
“That’s between us girls.” You say before turning back to the job at hand.
Before you can remove the briefcase you have to check for any leaks so you grab a few things out of the bag you had with you. After doing a few preliminary tests you deem it safe to move so you put everything back and grab the briefcase.
“C’mon, let’s get out of here.” You tell Steve.
“I’ll be out in a minute.”
“Nope. You’re leaving now. You can mope in your apartment but I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to stay here.”
“I promise I’ll be out in a few minutes.”
You shake your head. “Just go to your apartment. I’ll call Mrs. B.”
“She doesn’t scare me.”
“Fine, I'll bring in the big guns. I’ll call Charlotte and Henry.”
“You wouldn’t.” Steve gasps.
“Try me.” You raise your brows. “Now grab your shit and let's go. I have samples to run.”
“Fine.” Steve grabs his shield and bag and follows you out of the jet.
You walk in silence together until you get to the elevators.
“I’ll see you later ok?”
“You got something new to work on, I don’t think I’ll see you for at least three days.” Steve smirks.
“I’ll check in with you at some point. You really did your best.”
Steve nods but looks a bit dejected.
“Go get some rest.” You say as you enter the elevator and Steve heads down the hall to the living quarters.
The pain started slowly. At first you thought it was just stiffness in your neck from being in the same position for so long. But then the sounds of the lab and the conversations were too loud. The light was too bright. You were blinking slowly as you tried to focus on something around you. It wasn’t until the nausea hit that you knew you had a few minutes to clean up your station and save all the information you had before you needed to leave. You excused yourself with Bruce, who was looking at you with concern. He was kind enough to escort you to your apartment just to make sure you actually got there.
“Are you sure you’ll be ok?” He asks as you stop in front of your door.
“I’ll be fine.”
“I can get someone from the medbay come up here.”
“No, I'm good. I’m sure with some sleep this migraine will go away.” You say quietly.
“Well you don’t have to come in tomorrow. Rest up and let me know if you need anything.”
“Thanks Bruce.” You say before heading inside.
****
Steve is just closing the door to his apartment when Mrs. B turns the corner. She has her medic bag with her and instinctively Steve looks to your door.
“Mags, what's going on?”
“Y/N asked me to come up. Said something about a headache.” She says while stopping in front of your door.
“Oh.”
“I’ll let her know that you’re right here if she needs anything. I’m gonna go check on her.”
“Ok.”
****
After taking a nap and waking up feeling worse you did the only thing you could think of, called Mrs. B. If it weren’t because you were in such a weakened state you would’ve found more medicine for your headache. But you could barely get out of bed.
“Y/N, it’s me. May I come in?” You heard Mrs. B call out softly.
She was right outside your bedroom door so you just groaned in response. The door opens and the light from the living room fills the dark space you had created for yourself. You groan again and she closes the door.
“Can you tell me what’s wrong?” She whispers as she sits at the edge of your bed.
“Mi-migraine. Vomit. So bad.” You say with slurred speech.
“Do you get a lot of migraines?”
“Mhm.”
“Ok. I’m going to step out and check our records and I’ll be right back to help you. Are you allergic to any medication?”
There was complete silence for a moment and you felt Mrs. B’s cool hands on your forehead and you sighed. It was so hard for you to think straight so it took you a minute to come up with an answer.
“No.”
“Ok, I’ll be right back.” There was some shuffling around and the sound annoyed you but then you felt something cool on your head. “It’s an ice pack, maybe it could soothe you a bit.” She whispered and got up.
It felt like hours had passed as you laid there waiting for Mrs. B to come back. Really it was just a few minutes but the pain you were feeling was so overwhelming that you couldn’t keep track of anything.
“Y/N, I’m going to give you something for the pain ok.”
“Mhm.” Is the only acknowledgement you could give.
She moved quickly and quietly next to you in order to give you something to ease this pain. After she was done, Mrs. B sat beside you and pushed your hair away from your face. A motherly gesture that at a different time would have startled you but you welcomed it at the moment. She stayed for a few more minutes before grabbing her things.
“Y/N?” She calls your name softly.
“Mm?”
“Steve is out in the hallway. He wanted to know if it would be ok if he came in to check on you.”
This was so new to you. No one ever really worried about your well-being. Now there were two people that were looking after you. It was nice but also hard for you to accept the help and attention. You only called Mrs. B because you knew that as a medical professional she wouldn’t deny helping you and out of everyone in the medbay you only felt comfortable with her coming into your apartment. Steve was something else entirely. Yes you lived across from him and you even had him over for a movie night but you hadn’t really unpacked then. If he came in now it would be like he could really see all of you. But at the moment you also needed help or the reassurance that someone would come in to see if you were still alive.
“Ok.” You barely manage to say.
“Alright I’ll let him know but you can still have Friday call me if you need me.”
“Thanks.” You say while turning away from her and closing your eyes again.
****
“Y/N? Hey, can you hear me?” The words were rushed and panicked. “C’mon open your eyes. Y/N open your eyes.”
You groaned in response. The pain you felt was horrible. You were nauseous too. A nice cool feeling comes over your forehead and you lean into it.
“Y/N, can you hear me?”
It was Steve. A panicked, worried Steve was talking to you but you felt like you were underwater so you only hummed.
“I’m going to take you to the medbay.” He whispers as you’re lifted up in his strong arms. You lean into his chest and fall back into unconsciousness.
You were groggy and confused when you finally woke up. Your body ached and you still felt that dull pounding in your head from the overpowering migraine. The more alert you became the more you realized you weren’t in your room or your apartment.
“Y/N?” Asked a sleepy voice from beside you.
“Steve?” You rasp out.
“Hey, how are you feeling?”
“Like my head got hit with a sledgehammer.” You groan. “Where am I?”
“I had to bring you to the medbay, I came in to check in on you and found you passed out on your bathroom floor.”
You just stared at Steve for a moment. “I-I don’t remember getting out of bed.”
“It’s ok. You were really out of it. The doctors said your migraine was really bad.”
“I haven’t had one this bad in a long time.”
Steve cups your cheek, running his thumb back and forth. You lean into the touch and close your eyes, completely missing the worry in Steve’s eyes. Physical contact wasn’t something either of you did normally but it was nice to feel his warmth. Truth be told you craved being closer to Steve all the time.
“You know Charlotte and Henry came by to see you.” He says after a moment making you open your eyes. “They left their teddy bears because it would make you feel better. Henry even picked some flowers for you.”
You look down to find pink and orange bears holding paws laying on your lap. A small bouquet of wildflowers is in a cup full of water. It makes you smile. “They’re sweet.”
“They were very worried about you, so we’re a few other people. But let me call the nurse and then I’ll let them know you’re ok.”
A nurse walks in a few minutes later. She checks your vitals, asks a few questions and leaves again. The small interaction drains you again. Steve takes a seat again as you watch him through hooded eyes.
“You know you don’t have to stay right?” You whisper.
“I know. I want to.” He replies softly with a smile. “Get some rest and I’ll be right here if you need anything.”
It had been a few days since you had woken up in the medbay. Since then Steve and Mrs. B had both been checking up on you regularly. Mrs. B making sure you were taking enough breaks and drinking plenty of water. It still felt odd to you, to have people that genuinely cared for you. There was no motive behind them coming to see you.
You’d been around them for almost two years already and you still felt like an outsider. Their concern was genuine but you didn’t know how to react to it. You wanted to do something nice for Mrs. B and then something for Steve.
“Hey.” Bruce startled you out of your thoughts. “I’m about to head down, walk with me?”
“Sure.” You grab your tablet and head out with Bruce.
He was going on a mission, a rare thing these days, and wanted to go over a few projects. This is what you were hired to do. So all the way from your office down to the jet he rattled off what he needed done and you made notes and asked questions. Bruce said a quick goodbye before walking towards the jet.
“Hey,” you walk up to Steve who was looking at his own tablet. “Ready for your mission?”
“I hope so.”
“You’ll be fine. Remember you can only do your best. Don’t be reckless, I need you here.”
Steve smiles, his cheeks flushing a little.
At the other end of the hangar Bucky is giving his family kisses. Next to him is a blonde woman. When she sees Steve she starts walking his way, a smile on her lips.
“Steve, how have you been?”
“Good. How have you been Sharon?” Steve nods at her.
“Good. Glad to finally have a more permanent residence.” Sharon says while crossing her arms over her chest. “This mission is going to be a hard one.”
“You’re going on this mission?”
“Yeah, didn’t Fury tell you? I’m starting here today. I’m the official liaison between the Avengers and the CIA.”
You silently listen and look between them, unsure if something is happening. It feels like it is and you don’t like it at all.
“This is doctor Y/N Y/L/N. She works with Bruce, Y/N this is Sharon Carter.” Steve introduces you.
“So you’re the one who stole my apartment across from this one.” Sharon lightly smacks Steve’s chest. “If you didn’t want to be my neighbor again you could’ve just said that, Steve.” She chuckles.
You’re annoyed by her instantly and you can’t hide the expression that says as much. It’s like she was trying too hard. Maybe you just didn’t want to share Steve’s attention. This friendship between Steve and Sharon didn’t feel like his friendship with Mrs. B. There was some underlying tension between the two people in front of you.
“Yeah well, last time I thought you were a nurse. A CIA agent sounds more dangerous to have as a neighbor. Besides, Y/N here keeps me on my toes.”
“Oh well,” Sharon looks between the two of you, trying to decipher what kind of relationship you have. “If you want a fun neighbor, let me know.”
You scoffed and rolled your eyes, getting the attention of both of them. While Steve seemed to have been caught off guard by Sharon’s comment overall, she seemed taken aback at your small reaction.
“Have a safe mission.” You mutter before turning and heading back inside.
“Duckie!” Lottie yelled across the hangar. “Wait for me.” She ran and stopped beside Steve to give him a hug and say a quick goodbye.
“Don’t I get a goodbye?”
Lottie who had been halfway to you turned, scowled in Sharon’s direction and shook her head. “No.”
“Charlotte.” Mrs. B called out. “That’s not nice. Don’t be rude to Sharon.”
“Bye.” Lottie says, the one word dripping with annoyance, and turns to run to you. “Can I be your ‘ssistant today?” She asks sweetly. You tried not to laugh at the quick shift in her mood.
“Sure, I could use all the help I can get.”
“Ok. I’ll be the best ‘ssistant.” Lottie takes your hand and pulls you towards the entrance of the building.
“Did I do something to piss her off?”
Mrs. B joins Steve and Sharon and shakes her head.
“At least not yet.” Steve quips, causing both women to look at him. “Her visions.” He reminds them both.
“Still, I’m sorry.”
“Don’t worry about it.” Sharon waves off the concern. “We should get going though, right?”
“Yeah. I’ll see you later Mags. Bye Peanut.”
“Be safe.” Mrs. B calls out as Sharon and Steve head to the yet.
You were about to close the door of your apartment behind you when the sound of tired footsteps echoed in the hallway. Pulling the door open just a bit you see Steve making his way towards his own apartment. He’s so tired he doesn’t even notice you stepping out of your apartment.
“Hey.” You greet him.
He turns and gives you a tired smile.
“How did it go?”
“The mission was a success. I did my best.”
“That’s all that matters.” You smile. “I won’t keep you, you must be exhausted.”
“I think I could sleep for days.” Steve blinks owlishly at you.
“Well fortunately your neighbor is boring and won’t keep you up.”
Steve grimaced at the memory of Sharon’s comment a few days prior. He didn’t think you were boring at all. In all honesty he was glad you were living across the hall from him. Steve found some sort of comfort in having you close.
“I don’t think you’re boring. I’m glad you’re my neighbor.”
“Maybe I’ll make you regret it.” You quip making Steve huff a laugh. “Anyways, go get some rest.”
“Yes ma’am.”
Steve turns and starts opening the door before you call him.
“Would it be ok if I check in on you?”
He gives you a tired smile but nods. “See, you’re the best neighbor.”
You watch him disappear into his apartment before closing the door behind you. Now you get to repay Steve for having been so caring when you got sick. No one had ever cared about you as much as he had in that moment. Even when he was busy with reports and training he always made sure to check in on you.
So you make sure he does in fact sleep as much as he needs. Although you don’t cook you’ve learned what he likes and make sure his fridge is stocked. When Sharon inevitably shows up knocking on his door you’re more than happy to send her away without her getting to flirt with Steve. The thought alone makes you irrationally angry because you know that Steve can be with whoever he wants to. When Sharon turns back around to see if you’re still standing in the hallway you send her the fakest smile you can muster.
It was nice, having someone take care of you and you being able to return the favor. You felt like something was shifting in your friendship with Steve. And even though you weren’t sure what it was you would welcome it with open arms. Because being around Steve made you feel safe and cared for and you’d dare to say even loved.

Desperate People find faith.
Bucky Barnes x reader
An accident mends your broken heart.
A/N: Written in Third POV. No use of Y/N. However, the reader is referred to as a female.
I read this amazing oneshot, and I couldn't stop thinking about this idea. So I added my own twist to it. Thanks to the wonderful writer for sharing it and for inspiring me.
Likes, comments, reblogs are VERY VERY highly appreciated. Opinions really matter to me
TW: Bullets and blood. Mentions of torture but nothing explicit
Main Masterlist
You knew you shouldn't have done it. You should have stayed home. What could barely be described a home. You should have minded your business. You should have acted like the civilian you are now. You shouldn't have done it. But your loyalty to Steve wouldn't have let you
The image of the cheap copy so-called Captain America holding the shield blasting all over the news was a hit. A gut-wrenching hit. There was a guy who was taking the place of your childhood best friend, the man you called brother, the fearless leader. And he looked happy doing so. Then the blond had the audacity to say that Steve felt like a brother to him. You felt physical pain that you almost threw up.
Rationality went out the window. Before you knew any better, you were tracking down the man who was handed your friend's legacy. The man who gave it away when there was nobody more deserving than him. It wasn't hard to know exactly where Sam Wilson was. You were aware he joined the Air Force once again. So you hijacked the location of his next mission, demanding answers.
But it appeared that you weren't the only one who had the same plan. As you were talking to Sam, trying to be as nice as you could, giving him the benefit of the doubt, telling him you weren't here to judge or pick a fight. You just wanted an explanation. You heard him.
"Shouldn't have given up the shield."
His voice was filled with anger. But you could hear the sadness hidden in his tone. Sam scuffed, walking away from you as well. You turned around and you saw him. The love of your life. Quite literally.
You fail to recall a time you weren't in love with James Buchanan Barnes. Growing up together, your trio was inseparable. You would never see one without the others. From the age of three till your twenties, the three of you were more than family.
Despite loving Steve like the brother you never had, the same couldn't be said about his best friend. Your feelings for the brunette were never platonic. Neither were his. In the second grade, he promised to marry you once he got older. And he did. He kneeled to the ground with a beautiful golden ring for you once he secured a job. It was the easiest yes in your life.
Loving him came to you naturally. Stolen glances. Sweet words. Fast heartbeats. Shy smiles. Gentle touches. You were each other first everything. It was like you were made for each other. Like you were born to love him.
And he was your perfect man. Every woman envied you. Every woman hoped to have someone look at her like he looked at you. Every woman wished for a man who treated her the way he treated you. Every woman prayed for a man to love her that much.
Bucky Barnes was head over heels in love with you. And he made sure he showed it.
You were the luckiest girl.
Up until your luck ran out. War knocked on your door like a hurricane, destroying your life.
You remember the night before Bucky was shipped. When you went home after what couldn't be called a double date at Stark expo. The promises the both of you made. Your dream wedding. Your house. Your family. Your kids. All of it. Your future. And you believed him. You couldn't fathom any alternatives.
So when Steve walked in your tent where you did your job as a journalist, who was asked to cover The Howling Commandos missions and subject their heroism to the public, you knew. The look of utter defeat in his face, his glassy eyes, his red nose, the way he was trying to shrink away in his new huge body, you knew.
Your heart was ripped and broken to pieces. The pain was suffocating. You were drowning. You felt like the world ended. Life stopped.
You don't remember how things went after that. You don't remember if Steve ever said the words to you, but you remember his promise of revenge as he held your sobbing body against his chest.
And he did. He ended Hydra. But it came with a price. Very high. After Steve's sacrifice, life became meaningless. You weren't living. You were barely breathing. You were alone.
So when the government asked you to write the final article about the war, the winning announcement, you were about to turn it down. You found difficulties in everything. Leaving your bed sounded like a tiring task. Eating felt like a punishment. Functioning like a human became a burden.
But you remembered how supportive Bucky was of your career. When every man let women their abandon their dreams, Bucky helped you fight for yours. And he gave his life for this victory. Your fiancée and bestfriend. You owed it to them. To be the one to report the triumph tinted with their effort and blood.
So you put in all your strength and travelled with the small team to write the most important piece of work in your life.
However, only a number of people of the team and the article made it back. You didn't.
On your way back, you were ambushed by unknown soldiers. They took you to unknown quarters. You were so confused until you saw that cursed symbol. They weren't gone. Neither was your fiancée.
And that began a lifetime of torture and pain. They brainwashed Bucky but left you with your memories. So when they threatened to hurt him, you caved and let them do whatever they wanted to you. It was a trap they built for you, and you fell in it every time. They would hurt both of you at the end.
You endured it all. You survived it all. Except the moment they made Bucky look you in the eyes and fight you. They erased you from his mind. You saw the love of your life, and he saw nothing. He looked at you and saw either an enemy or a mission partner. And that was the most painful torture Hydra put you through.
As if this wasn't enough. You had to face a hindrance you never thought of.
After Steve rescued the both of you, after him running away from you, after spending two years making amendments with the government and helping Steve search for him, after the accords and Zemo's predicament, after he remembered you, after Princess Shuri was able to give him back his freedom, after you hugged him as he cried, after you decided to finally have that wedding, Thanos happened.
You believe you did something so terrible in another life, and you were getting punished for it in this life. There was no logical explanation as to why this kept happening to you. Why were you robbed of any chances of happiness. Why did you have to watch your man disappear right after having him back. Why you could only feel ache and misery. Why was the world so cruel.
So you kept your hopes to minimum when Steve came to your shared apartment one night, telling you that they had a plan. You agreed to join them in the time heist, ready to be disappointed.
But the second you saw Bucky standing on the sides with his machine gun, you wanted to cry. You thought it was an illusion, but these blue eyes said something else. Now, you were fighting with a strong drive and purpose.
You thought that was it. Your happy ending. You finally had him. But Steve leaving tore you apart. You were happy for your bestfriend who finally did something for himself. However, you couldn't help but feel sad. At least you and Bucky had each other.
Bucky had another thing in mind. Because, a couple of weeks after Steve leaving, Bucky broke up with. He said he needed to figure himself out and work on his pardon. You understood. But it didn't make it any easier.
So you left, giving him all the space he needed. You hadn't seen or spoken to each other since. At least he is alive. That's what you kept telling yourself to find any sort of comfort or condolence.
So this was the first time you had met. He looked different. He cut his hair. He had a scruff. He was wearing an all black outfit. He had gloves on. He had little bags under his eyes. He looked good overall. That's what mattered to you.
"Good to see you too, Buck." Sam said as he walked with intentions to move away from Bucky.
"This is wrong." Bucky didn't give him the chance as be walked beside Sam, without batting you an eye. You couldn't say that didn't hurt but you followed them anyway.
"Look, I'm working, alright. So all this outrage is going to have to wait." It was clear that Bucky wasn't here to have a civil conversation like you.
"You didn't know this was going to happen?" Bucky accused Sam.
"No, of course I didn't know that was going to happen." Sam was quick to deny Bucky's accusations.
"You think it didn't break my heart to see them march him out and call him the new Captain America." This was more directed towards you, following up to your conversation before Bucky cut in.
"This isn't what Steve wanted." Bucky wasn't going to back down.
"Oh my god. So what do you want me to do? Call America and tell them I changed my mind. " Sam's sarcastic reply did nothing but annoy Bucky's more.
"Like I told your wife. There is nothing we can do. You just couldn't wait for her to get home." You looked at Sam. It didn't appear to you that he wouldn't know.
"We broke up."
Another wave of pain hit you as you turned to look at Bucky, who was still not looking at you. How easy could he just say it with no emotions at all. You were fighting to get by every day, and he looked like he didn't care.
"What?!" Sam stopped suddenly once he heard Bucky's words, turning to the both of you.
"You,two lovebirds who literally broke laws to be together, broke up?" Sam couldn't believe his ears. He thought you would have gotten married by now. Your love for each other more epic than all the novels he read.
"Were you asked to give it up?" You changed the topic quickly, refusing to answer Sam's question or talk about your tragic love story. It hurt bad enough, and you didn't want to show it.
"Of course not." Sam heard you loud and clear. He also knew your question had pure intentions. You weren't here to offend him.
"Right, great reunion, guys. Be well." Sam turned to walk out, ending this conversation.
"You had no right to give up the shield, Sam." Bucky was angry, and he was showing it. In the wrong way.
"This is what you aren't going to do. You aren't going to come here in your over extended life and tell me about my rights." Three of you came to a stop.
"It's over." Sam added, looking at you as you came to stand next to Bucky.
"Besides, I have bigger things to deal with."
And you hadn't rest since.
It was, indeed, big thing to deal with.
You had no idea what you were getting yourself into when you impulsively followed Sam and Bucky into the plane.
It was a constant mess. The flag smashers. New super soldiers. Karli Morgenthau. Isaiah Bradley. Zemo. Madripoor. Power Broker. And the worst of them all. John Walker and Lemar Hoskins. It never ended.
All that chaos was a good distraction. You didn't have time to think about your broken heart nor to think about the current nature of your and Bucky's relationship.
It was complicated and confusing.
You fought very well together. Your combined sets of skills were lethal. Your collective training and ability to work together kicked in when needed. Away from that, the both of you barely talked. You acknowledged each other existence. That's how you would describe it.
However, you couldn't explain why Bucky refused when Raynor asked you and Sam to join them in the session in the police station. Or why he always made sure you stayed at least an arm distance away from Zemo. Or why did he choose to be the Winter Soldier for the night instead of you compromising your identity that you kept a secret all these years. Or why, that day at Madripoor, he almost took multiple bullets for you. Or why whenever John showed up, his hand would always find yours.
You were thankful you didn't have the time to think about all of this because you were sure you would have lost your mind. You barely had your emotions in checks. And there was a lot going on.
Then it all went crushing. You would never forget this day.
You followed Sam and Bucky, running out of the building into the street, only to see the calamity that just occurred.
John Walker stood proud with the blood-tinted shield above the man he just slaughtered.
Instinctively, your hand came up to wrap around Bucky's bicep, looking for any comfort for the both of you. This scene would forever be engraved in your memories.
Three of you gave John some time. You stood outside of the warehouse he was in right now. You knew if you all went angry, the results would be catastrophic.
But it was anyway.
You let Sam do most of the talking. He was the best in this. If anyone could convince John to hand over the shield, it would be him. So you stood and watched. But it appeared that the time you gave John Walker to cool down only drove him more over the edge. So, with the three of telling him to give up the shield, John Walker lost his mind.
It should have been an easy fight. A veteran and an avenger and two super soldiers. It shouldn't be hard. But neither one of the three of you was fighting was the intention to hurt John. Unlike him, John was fighting to kill. With his new powers, he was uncontrollable.
You let out a high-pitched scream once you saw John throw Bucky away, electrocuting his arm, making him lose consciousness. Then you watched as he straddled Sam on the ground. You needed to act quickly.
You groaned as you got up from the floor, looking at the cut in your arm. Nothing too bad. You told yourself as you ran toward John tickling him away from Sam.
It was just you and him, now.
And it was brutal.
You were still trying not to hurt him too much. However, he was unstoppable. So when he figured that he would lose combat with you eventually, he retrieved to other options.
Picking the shield and throwing it at you for it cause a cut in your chest was enough distraction for him to take out the gun he kept in his suit and shot you.
The bullets found their places in your stomach and legs. He aimed for places that you wouldn't recover from. You fell to the ground, coughing blood, feeling the bullets rest so deep in your body.
John walked towards you with the shield. He looked at you. His eyes were showing insanity and rage. He lifted the shield up and hit you in the chest. The pain was like no other. And you knew that was it.
It felt ironic in so many ways. Your bestfriend's shield. The shield that presented all of Steve's values and beliefs. The shield that helped once save your life. Now, it was going to be the weapon to kill you.
Of all the ways you thought you would die in, this wasn't even close. But when was life ever fair to you? At least you would have peace now. Your dying wish was for Bucky to know how much you loved him and how you wanted him to be fine and happy. Because you loved Bucky more than life itself.
You tried to distract yourself from the excruciating pain by counting how many hits of the shield would it take to end you.
You counted two.
You started coughing violently as you felt a weight got lifted off your chest. All your body going numb for seconds.
You saw Bucky was up once again, and he managed to corner John with Sam, trying to break his arm to take away the shield.
You desperately tried to get up and help them, but your whole body was on fire. Why was the serum not working?
A breath escaped you once you heard the sound of bone breaking. Only to realize breathing hurt. Everything hurt so bad.
With cuts on your arms and face, bruises on your ribs, wounds in your chest, bullets in your stomach and legs, you gave up, closing your eyes.
Because of your agonizing pain. You didn't hear Bucky beating the life out of John after taking the shield. He didn't stop until John passed out.
Bucky turned around and saw a sight that came straight out of his worst nightmares. He had seen it too many times. Woke up scared and sweating because of it. A sight that he knew would haunt him more than it already did.
Your lifeless body in a pool of blood.
He took careful steps towards you, praying it would disappear, and this would just be a nightmare of his. But the sound of your faint heartbeats made it real.
"Doll." Bucky got on his knees next to you, holding your motionless body in his arm.
You hissed in pain as you felt a movement that caused all the pain in your body to stir awake again.
"Bucky." Your voice was a whisper. You were too tired to open your eyes, but the feeling of the metal around you was familiar.
"I'm right here, doll." Bucky may not let it show in his voice, but if you opened your eyes, you would see the fear and tears.
"I need you to stay awake, okay. Can you do this for me? Please, stay awake." Bucky never felt this desperate before.
"Help is on the way." The three of you had already arranged with Torres to have an ambulance on stand-by. You had a feeling things would go bad. But not that bad.
"I'm tired." The amount of blood you were losing was making you too dizzy.
"I know, doll. But you will be okay." Bucky didn't care about the blood getting all over him as he pulled you closer to him.
"You will get better. Because you have to." He was saying it more to himself than you.
"I prayed for this." Talking was getting too hard, but you had to tell.
"What did you pray for?" Bucky was doing anything to keep you awake. He needed to listen to your voice.
"To die in your arms."
Bucky felt the tears escape his eyes, falling down freely on his face.
"You aren't dying. You will be okay." You heard it. The shakiness of his voice.
Fighting the great pain you were in, you opened your eyes to look at him. You wanted to see him one last time. This is why you prayed to die in his arms. So his face would be the last thing to see. This voice would be the last thing you heard. His arms the last thing you felt. Your farewell to the cruel world would be with the man who had been your heaven on Earth.
You lifted your arm with a moan of pain before you placed it on his cheek. You needed to say it. You needed it to be your last words.
"I love you, Bucky. I loved you my whole life."
With that, the world went dark.
You didn't get to see the mess that Bucky became as he heard your heartbeats slow down. His screams and desperate calls of your name to wake up.
He was so blinded by pain that he didn't let the paramedics near, protecting your body until he realized who they were. They didn't try to fight him when he insisted on getting in the ambulance with you.
All the time you were in the surgery, Bucky was inconsolable. He didn't care that Sam and Torres saw him as he sobbed, sitting on the floor waiting for anybody to tell you were fine. All he cared about was that he didn't say it back. You could die not knowing how much he loved you. The thought brought new tears to his already puffy red eyes
He prayed to God and anyone that would hear. If you were standing close enough, you would hear him. "Please, don't take her from me." "Please, let her be okay." "Take me instead of her." "She deserves so much better, please."
In his long life that was filled with hardships, torture, and wars, this was the worst pain he ever went through. He could feel his heart twisting and breaking. Every cell in his body was hurting. The emotional pain turning physical.
His eyes were dried up. Cheeks stained with tears. His mind going through all the worst scenarios. None of them he would be able to survive.
He jumped up from the floor when the door opened, and a doctor walked out. His heart was beating a thousand miles a second. All these prayers never leaving his mouth. His last hope.
"She is okay."
Tears of relief fell from his eyes. You survived it. You made it. The doctor talked about your injuries. With medications and the seurm, you would heal properly. Bucky didn't pay attention. His mind focused on one thing. He needed to see you.
After knowing your room's number, Bucky didn't leave your side. The doctor told him it might take a bit for you to wake up, but he didn't mind. He would stay forever.
It wasn't long before you woke up.
You opened your eyes slowly, adjusting to the bright lights. The last thing you remember was the intense pain. It didn't hurt as much now. You just felt so exhausted. You tried to move your hands, only to be blocked.
You looked down to see Bucky holding your hand so tightly and his head resting next to it. You could tell his eyes were swollen and his nose was red. But he looked peaceful sleeping. You missed him so much.
Without much thought, you moved your other free hand to his head, playing with his hair. It felt soft under your fingers. You blamed the serum that made him wake up from such a simple touch.
You smiled softly as you watched him, trying to remember where he was and what he was doing. He looked confused until he saw you.
"You are awake." Bucky got up from the seat next to the bed.
"Are you okay? Are you pain? What hurts? I'm going to call the doctor." He was frantic. He only stopped when you held his metal hand.
"I'm okay, Bucky." You reassured him with a smile.
You repeated it a couple of times before he finally sat back down on the chair. That's when you noticed he was still in his suit that was covered in blood. Your blood.
After he sat down, he looked at your intertwined fingers together and couldn't help the tears.
"What's wrong?" You asked as you moved your thumb gently on his knuckles.
"You scared the life out of me." He answered as he wiped his tears away.
"Though we were used to this, Barnes." You replied playfully, hands still together.
"Not when it comes to you. Never you." Bucky was fast to respond.
"Nothing I haven't been through before." You said it casually. You didn't miss the look in Bucky's eyes. It held too much depth to it. You couldn't put your hand on it
"Is your arm okay? Do you need to get it checked?" Flashbacks were coming back to you bit by a bit. As you touched his metal arm, you remembered what happened to him.
"You are in the hospital bed, and you are asking about my arm." Bucky's laugh was dry. He would always be in awe of how caring you were.
"I will never stop caring about, Bucky. Even if you don't want me." It was true. Nothing could make you stop caring about Bucky.
"Don't want you?" Bucky couldn't let your comment go by.
"Yeah. You don't want me anymore. It's okay. I understand."
"You understand?"
"I remind you of a bad time. The worst. And you had to move on. You had to cut ties with all parts of this time."
"Is this why you think we broke up?"
"Isn't it?"
You started telling yourself this after the breakup as a way to pick the shattered pieces of your heart. Of course, he didn't want to be with someone who held their bad time as a constant reminder on her body as scars. Or with someone who went through the same hell as him. He deserved someone better. Someone who wasn't so damaged.
And you understood.
"No, it isn't."
He was planning to tell you everything but not right now. But words just fell out from the tip of his tongue.
"I don't look at you and see bad time. I look at you, and I see all my failures."
You looked at him, baffled, not getting what he meant.
"I remember everything."
You still didn't know what he wanted to say.
"I remember what Hydra did to you. What they made you do for me. What I did to you."
"Bucky.."
"How they pushed you too far in the lies of not hurting me. How they made you watch as they erased you from my mind. How they made me fight you. Hurt you."
You were about to tell him how you didn't hold him accountable to any of this because it was never his fault. It was never his intention. You were sure Bucky would never hurt you. The Winter Soldier not too. But he cut you off.
"They took you because they knew how much you meant to me. How important you are to me. I was the reason you had to go through all of this."
"I look at you and remember how I failed to protect you. When that's all I ever wanted in life. To protect you. But I failed."
"Just like I failed today."
Before you could say anything, he kept going.
"I couldn't understand how you could still love me."
"I looked at the list of people I hurt, and your name was first. And you wanted to help me. You wanted to stay by my side. I couldn't live with the guilt. I still can't. I had to let you go despite how bad it hurts."
"But, doll, I want you to be sure nobody will ever love you half as much as I do."
It took years for Hydra to remove you from his mind. But what they didn't know was that they never fully succeeded.
At first, he would forget his name but remember his girl and everything about you. Then they become harsher, so he would only remember your face and name. Then, it became only your face. Then nothing. The blank paper for them to write what they wanted.
However, whenever Hydra made the both of you train together or go on missions, he would get this rush of flashbacks like a movie playing in his head once he was alone in his cell. It would be you. In different places and different ages. The Winter Soldier would convince himself that it must be his memories from past missions. Effects of being wiped too many times.
The soldier was never able to shake the feeling of guilt after a training session where he would be instructed to be tough with you. A feeling so foreign to him.
He remembers the first time he refused to hurt you. They made him watch from far as they tortured you. Then they wiped him again. Every time he showed any sympathy for you, he was wiped and handled roughly.
But all the efforts weren't enough. You were the first thing he remembered once he settled in Bucharest. That's when the guilt came in. It was you. The love of his love. His fiancée. And they got to you. And he couldn't save you.
Even after the blip, His thoughts kept going back to how he betrayed you and hurt you instead of protecting you like he was meant it.
But the worst part was how he thought he didn't deserve your love anymore. He thought you would resent him. So he decided to break his heart into two. He left.
You were the forbidden topic that Raynor wasn't allowed to go near despite how much she wanted. You were the centre of his nightmares. All of them. Past memories of both of you at Hydra. Missions and trainings. And the worst, losing you. Watching you getting killed. Nightmares that invaded him, and he was defenceless.
"I love you, and I'm so sorry." Bucky laid soft kiss on your hand.
"Let me ask a question, Bucky." He looked at you, tears still filling his eyes.
You didn't expect this to be the real reason why you and Bucky broke up. But you should have known. He was too good of a man.
"If it had been the other way you around, wouldn't you have done the same? Would you have hated me then?"
"I would give my life for you without hesitation. And nothing could ever make me hate you."
His answer was fast. That was the only thing he knew about himself. You come first, always.
"Then why are you surprised with what I did? You don't love me more, Bucky." You laughed softly, already feeling your ribs ache a bit.
You always had this running joke that Bucky loved you more than you did. And to a lot of the extent, it was true.
"You didn't deserve it."
"Neither did you."
You patted the spot on bed next to you, wanting him to be close to you. And he listened. He sat on the bed, hands never leaving each other.
"Haven't we been through enough? Haven't the world tore us apart too many times? Let us have this."
If he still loved you, then you should be together. You should be broken together. You should heal together. It was poetic how even in pain, you were still together.
Both of you understood each other better than anyone. You shouldn't be separated.
"You don't hate me?" It was Bucky's worst fear and biggest doubt. If the damage Hydra did was unrepairable.
"I can live hundreds of years and still be in love with you."
You squeezed his hand to make sure he knew how serious you were. "You are all I have ever known, Bucky."
With that, Bucky got up and moved so close to you. Your faces millimetres away from each other. His breath fanning over your face. His personal scent with dust and blood engulfing you. His blue eyes warming the inside of you.
"I got the best girl of them all." Bucky kissed you.
It was a soft, slow kiss. A sign of starting over. Of getting back.
You smiled in the kiss. Bucky used to say this all the time back then. You were known as Bucky's best girl. He used to call you that.
You broke away, feeling so much better now. Bucky rested his flesh hand on your cheek.
"I thought I lost you. I was so scared."
"You didn't. I'm right here."
"Though you will leave me before I say it back." You looked at him, puzzled.
"I love you, doll. You are the thing I live for. You are the purpose of my existence. I love you so much."
You didn't care about the pain as you moved up to meet his lips one more time. And he kissed you back right away.
"You owe me a ring and wedding, Barnes." You joked while you brought your other hand to hold into his suit to ground yourself.
He laughed before he moved away for a bit, and you already missed the closeness, and he wasn't far. You watched as he brought his dog tags out. You saw something bright with them but couldn't tell it was.
"Oh my god." You felt tears gather in your eyes as Bucky brought out the shiny thing closer.
It was your ring. Your engagement ring. The ring Bucky put in your finger many years ago. It was it. You thought it must have been lost that you didn't try to look for it, avoiding the disappointment.
But here it was. Bucky was able to find it. And he kept it with his dog tags. So close to his heart. Where you belonged.
Bucky got in one knee in his technical gear in a hospital room with you connected to IV.
"Doll, will you marry me?"
You laughed loudly that you felt pain shot again in your body. Bucky was next to you in an instant when your laugh turned to a cough.
"Third time is a charm." You said as you gave him your hand.
With another proposal in Wakanda before the snap, you managed to get Bucky Barnes on his knees three times for you.
He put the ring on your finger and pressed a kiss on your hand. "It will be. Mrs. Barnes." The name always had its sweet effect on you.
Bucky leaned in again to kiss you. And this kiss felt out of the world. Like a lifeboat before drowning. Water after the drought. Your rescue.
It was Bucky's promise of safety and security. Nothing and nobody was ever going to hurt you again. A promise of a safe home. Together.
You kept your forehead resting on his as your hand found its place once again on his suit.
"No to be rude, but you need a shower, babe." You could feel the dust on his face and the blood dried on his suit and skin.
"I will be okay. Probably going to fall asleep." You didn't give him a chance to protest.
"Plus, you know. I like my man nice and clean." You pecked his lips playfully.
The sound of the word "your man" falling from your lips referring to Bucky made his heart do little dances. Damn right he was your man.
"I won't take long." He kissed your hair before he got up and left to get himself presentable for his lady.
The world felt lighter, brighter, better. You felt happy. You were happy. You looked at the ring that held huge meaning for you. You weren't hurting. You were finally okay. You had your man back.
Who would have thought a near death incident would be the thing to give you back the man who always brought life to you.

Not for the first time, you realize just how badly you need to escape from Steve. You have to, before he decides to turn a passing comment into reality and you’ll be trapped with him forever.
The Cure & The Cause
Mafia!Steve x Captive!Reader
Word Count: ~2k
Notes/warning(s): some sexual content, coercion, Steve is sweet but a little psycho, no plot just vibes. Reader’s been kidnapped by Steve and is being held captive for a bit before story begins. Part of the same universe that Failed Bargaining belongs to.
If you enjoyed this, please consider reblogging or leaving some feedback, thanks! ❤
When the car rolls up to the curb and a member of Steve’s unit opens the door, Sharon exits first before it’s your turn. You’ve barely stepped out of the black Range Rover before several bodyguards usher you towards the entrance of the multi-storied boutique, but the small stretch of sidewalk you cross is simply not enough for you to attempt an escape. Figures.
You’ve only ever gone shopping for a wedding dress once, when you had accompanied your best friend in search of hers. But with the costs of her traditional wedding adding up quickly, Lisa had been forced to make some concessions where her dress was concerned. Her final choice was still lovely, in the end, though admittedly it wasn’t perfect in every capacity that she’d envisioned.
As soon as you step foot into the bridal boutique, you realize right away that whatever financial concerns Lisa had during her own wedding planning, Sharon will not have. Money is, quite frankly, the least of her worries. For starters, Sharon is one of Steve’s highest-ranking, and she’s getting married to Sam, so it’s no surprise that all the stops have been pulled out. This upscale boutique is apparently one of many salons she has in mind to visit, but already it’s proving to be the most impressive.
“We have the whole place to ourselves,” Sharon mentions with uncharacteristic giddiness, just as you and the rest of the group settle into plush white sofas. You thought that that in itself spoke to Steve’s influence and wealth, but when the senior manager in her stylish black dress and six-inch heels pops open a bottle of Dom Perignon circa 1996, you’re left wondering how much of Steve’s largesse these people are truly hoping for.
Together with the champagne, the store’s personnel offer you and the others an assortment of French pastries while Sharon gets into her first dress. A collection of them has already been set aside for her based on previous consultations, but today is when she gets to try them on. You’re already reaching for your second flute when you think that for just a second, you want to imagine that this is all a normal picture, that these women you’re here with—Sharon, Nat, Wanda and Sarah—are in fact your girlfriends, rather than accomplices to your captivity. That without him present, you might just be able to subscribe to the illusion. Combined with the right amount of ridiculously expensive champagne, it’s more than possible.
This scares you more than you want to admit. Mostly because you’re stuck realizing how lonely you’ve been up to this point, even before Steve decided to take you, but also how your perception of your captivity is beginning to morph into something less depraved, a jagged picture where the edges are becoming dulled.
You swallow down another bit of champagne in response, and then a little bit more; the next thing you know, time is flying by and your reaction at every dress Sharon steps out in gets more expressive, louder. Somewhere along the way you even end up in Nat’s lap, arms flung over her shoulder, the both of you choking on laughter at a snide comment Sharon’s made about the gown that Wanda—yes, her—has chosen to try on. It’s the very portrait of idealized friendship, of closeness and devotion and support. Of course you want to believe all this, even if only for a minute.
“It looks like you ladies have gone through most of the champagne I sent,” says a low, timbrous voice that slices through the racket of laughter and loud talk.
You, together with everyone else, process Steve’s sudden presence in the salon at the same moment, only your reaction is nowhere near as positive. Amongst the wild cheers and drunken shrieks that the other women let out, you merely stare at him with your mouth agape, blinking at the sight of him in the doorway, Bucky lingering not so far behind. Rather than disappointment, your brain can only process how fucking handsome this man is, how the top of his head nearly grazes the lintel as he enters, every step full of confidence. You’re completely out of his league, your brain foggily reminds you, though you know that—just like you know what’s beneath the gray suit he’s wearing, the one tailored to perfection.
More treacherous thoughts, you realize, just like most of them today.
“It feels like I’ve stepped into a party,” Steve says, rounding a sofa to enter the fray. His blue eyes cut to you, take in your place on Nat’s lap and the way you’re holding on to her, but he says nothing.
“That’s because it is a party,” Sharon insists, a little too loudly, the tendrils of her hair dancing along the sides of her face. “What are you doing here, anyway?”
“We were driving through the district and I thought I’d drop in,” he says, still hovering over them. Bucky’s leaning against the doorway with his arms folded across his body and a look of mild amusement on his face, but he doesn’t attempt to intrude any further.
With his hands poised on his hips, Steve looks over at Wanda standing before the wall-to-wall mirrors. “Last time I checked, you’re not getting married. What’s happening here?”
“Nobody says you have to be a bride to try on a pretty dress,” Nat explains beneath you, one arm still loosely wrapped around your waist. “Sharon needed a breather, actually, so we’ve decided to take turns modeling now. Right, babe?”
She knocks a shoulder against one of yours.
When Steve swivels his head to look down at the both of you, there’s a smirk tugging at one corner of his mouth. “In that case, it’s your turn,” he commands, eyes fixed squarely on you. “Now that I think about it, I'm curious to know how you’d look in a wedding dress. And you want to please me, don’t you?”
You blink at him, letting his words wash over you. You remain sitting on Nat’s lap, even though you’re still not sure how you ended up there in the first place, and you can’t quite believe that Steve’s here too, but reality is starting to sink back in, your little fantasy cracking at the edges. These women around you aren’t your friends, and this isn’t some typical shopping excursion at a designer bridal house.
When you respond, you’re only vaguely aware how much the champagne you’ve been knocking back has emboldened you. His champagne, no less.
“Forget it,” you say, shaking your head. “I don’t want to.”
You think you may be imagining it, but the room suddenly feels quieter. Steve, though, is still looking down at you, his face still set in a calm expression.
“Find a dress, sweetheart, or I’ll choose one and get you into it myself.” He sinks into the plush sofa adjacent to yours, the sole occupant. “Knowing your tastes, you won’t like what I have in mind for you.”
You know that Steve’s not messing around, because he’s made good on a similar threat before. Worst of all, none of the women around you dissent on your behalf, not even Nat, sitting so close to you. You should feel betrayed by their silence, but it’s partly your fault you helped craft the illusion you so badly wanted to believe in.
“Come on beautiful, let’s go find you something,” Nat says gently, nudging you to stand. Maybe it’s the hurt you’re feeling, but this time around you don’t object as you follow a sales consultant, Nat trailing close behind. You pass by Bucky as you leave the private room; he throws you a look akin to mild sympathy before he joins the rest.
“My god, look at you,” he breathes, slowly rising from the plush white sofa. “My sweet, sweet girl, all dressed up to get married.”
You’d chosen a dress that made you think of a suit of armor. But by the way Steve studies you, his gaze sharp enough to pierce through any material, you just feel vulnerable. Exposed. Ironic, because your first and final choice felt the most conservative compared to all the dresses that Sharon and the others had come out in. Nat had coaxed you into wearing a veil, too, completing the whole look.
The champagne keeps your fiery spirit afloat, your tongue looser than normal. “I'm never getting married,” you say.
Steve lifts an eyebrow, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "Never?"
"Never," you parrot.
“Well that's too bad, 'cause that won't be a decision you get to make. Now come here.”
You think about ignoring him for a second, just turn right back where you’d shuffled from as your own quiet brand of fuck you. But there’s a look of expectancy on his face, and at his full height, Steve isn’t one to spar with.
His hands are already on your waist when you turn to the expanse of mirrors. You weren’t wrong when you deemed this dress less eye-catching than the others, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less lovely.
“What do you think?” he asks. You can feel his fingers playing with the veil that waterfalls behind you, the way his knuckles ghost along your back.
“It's . . . fine, I guess,” you say, staring at yourself in the mirror.
“Oh, I think it’s more than fine,” he insists. “Stunning, in fact. Should I buy it?”
He doesn’t mean it, you convince yourself, but it’s not enough to clamp down on the panic rising within you. Didn’t he just hear what you’d said a second earlier?
Until now, Steve has never mentioned marriage or anything of the like. But since when did you know how his mind worked? You wouldn’t be here if you did.
“Well?”
You shake your head. “Don’t. I can’t wear white to another bride’s wedding,”
Steve chuckles as he gently draws back the veil and your hair away, sweeping both over your left shoulder. “In that case, you can wear it at home, just for me. And you’ll make sure not to wear anything underneath, won’t you?”
Goosebumps dance along your skin. His hands on your waist have you trapped in place, body pressed against his. To your alarm, you feel him hardening against your back, a threat and a promise.
" I liked it more when it was on the rack," you say hastily, trying to ignore his growing desire, "now that I'm in it, I'm having second thoughts."
In the mirror, you can see Steve shaking his head. "No, you're absolutely radiant in this. It's perfect . . . and it's just so you."
He acts without warning. You inhale sharply as his tongue trails up your neck, slow and hot. Steve was licking you—licking you—in front of everyone, without an ounce of shame. It reminds you all too well of the other night, when he had spread you out across his desk and eaten you out while he'd taken a call on speaker. He'd taken his damned time too, keeping you on the very precipice while the caller spewed all this babel your mind couldn't comprehend, all thanks to the desperate state you were in. And when he finally let you come, it had been with his hand shoved against your mouth.
Not for the first time, you realize just how badly you need to escape from Steve. You have to, before he decides to turn a passing comment into reality and you’ll be trapped with him forever.
Yeah I have no idea what this is lol; it was such a basic and simple premise that really didn’t need to be 2k plus words long, but here we are I guess. Graphics by me.

Catch up here: Chapter 1 Chapter 2 ❤️
“You think I can just say fuck it and drop out?” The words tumbled out of your mouth quickly as you walked with Nat toward the arena. Practice was in the afternoon today because there was a game tonight. According to Nat our rival team would be here later to do some warm up before the game tonight.
“Seriously?” She raised a manicured brow at you.
“Maybe Pietro was right. I should be a drama major,” you whispered, mostly to yourself. You knew you were being over dramatic about the ordeal, but Barnes was an egotistical jerk and he was going to make this project hell. Was that a pessimistic take on it? Maybe. Were you wrong? Probably not.
You pulled your school hoodie tighter, winter's grasp was holding on tight this year. The wind nipped at your nose and cheeks as you both made your way into the arena. Once inside the main doors heat blasted at you, you rubbed your arms with your hands and looked at Nat who was doing the same.
“You are dramatic. But it’s gonna be fine,” her confidence almost made you believe her. Originally you were just going to wait and ask him outside the arena, in hopes maybe his cocky, surefire attitude would be on the back burner. But Nat said practice was amping up now as the season drew closer to playoffs and the team would be traveling a lot more. Nat led us to our seats next to the bench, another woman was sitting there already.
“Peggy!” Nat said cheerfully, as she sat down next to her.
“Natasha!” she said cheerfully back. “Who’s this?” She smiled at you. You waved and introduced yourself.
“Oh you’re the one doing the art project? Steve mentioned it,” she asked.
You nodded, “news travels fast?” you laugh a little weirded out how she already knew.
“Hockey players gossip worse than fishermen wives in the locker room...”
“And out of it,” Nat added with a laugh, Peggy chuckled as well.
“And Barnes can’t shut up about the fact you drew him,” Peggy said with an eyeroll. Right, you thought. Peggy probably spent a decent time around him, since Steve and him were best friends, from your understanding it was rare to see one without the other.
“I’m not surprised,” you chuckled, looking down at your sketchpad. The night before you stayed up and watched videos of Barnes’ best plays and a couple of his interviews. There were some very detailed pictures of his face there. You quickly turned to a black page so Nat wouldn’t see it and poke fun. When you found a muse, it was hard for you to focus on anything but it. You could feel the hole you were digging getting bigger and bigger.
“Fuck,” you glared at Barnes as he slammed into the glass in front of you, startling you. He had his helmet lifted and he was giving you a bright and flirty smile. You raised an eyebrow at him and shook your head, uninterested in his antics. He slipped his helmet down and pushed back, skating backwards, he moved so fluidly, you couldn’t help but pay attention.
“Oi! Barnes. Pay attention,” someone snapped, you looked towards the voice and stared for a moment.
“Coach Fury,” Nat said to you, “the only person that can get Barnes to pay attention besides Steve,” she finished. You nodded before looking back at the players. Your eyes were drawn to a smaller player, he wore a 12 on his back, Stark. He had been in one of your business classes you took in your second semester. He was an interesting guy, cocky and arrogant, he also came from money. His father was the owner of Stark Industries. He was speeding up and down the ice with ease.
“12, he's fast,” you murmured to Nat, who nodded.
“He broke a record last year, his size makes it easier for him to zoom around,” Nat answered as she looked down at my paper, “Barnes really has your eye doesn’t he, this is like the Hela thing all over again,” she chuckled.
“Yeah,” you blushed deeply and looked back down at your paper. You really wished one of the other teammates caught your attention, if Clint did this would be much simpler. But of of course the school hot shot had to be one to catch your eye.
“Hey,” Nat lifted your chin and made you look at her. “It’s fine, muses come and go. That’s how art is,” she smiled, that was one thing you loved about Nat, she never questioned or made fun of your muses or how ridiculous an idea you had was when it came to your art. She would poke fun, and make silly jokes, but nothing harmful. Just good natured fun. Her support was unwavering and true.
Nat was a dancer, she was studying dance and dance theory. That’s how you two met, you accidently stumbled into one of the dance studios after hours instead of the art room. She was there practicing, and made small talk with you. You ended up just sitting on the dance room floor and working on your project talking with her as she practiced.
“You know what’s funny, I didn’t think about dance for this project,” you chuckled after you relaxed a little. Nat’s face broke into a wide smile.
“It would be the same as Pietro and the track team, but at least we look cute in our dance attire,” she mused lightly. You laughed loudly at her comment.
“You really hate those track uniforms,” you shook your head as you chuckled some more. Clint zipped passed a moment later and Nat‘s eye followed him like a magnet. “Goodness, you’re so in love, it’s sickening,” you mused, she pushed your shoulder playfully.
“How long have you two known one another?” Peggy asked.
“Since first semester,” you answered her with a smile.
“You guys are such good friends, I would have expected childhood bestfriends,” Peggy said, as she smiled at Steve who skated by.
“We just clicked,” you shrugged, returning to your sketchpad.
Practice drew to a close a little while later and you followed behind Nat and Peggy as they made their way back toward the locker room. There were a few girls, including Pepper Potts, Starks on again/off again girlfriend. Every other week Nat would be talking about it. The girl Bucky had on his arm last time was missing from the group of girls waiting for the players to leave the locker room. First out was Clint, and he made a beeline for Nat, instantly pulling her into a hug and pressing his nose into her neck, she squealed a little as his cold nose made contact with her skin.
Peggy excused herself to go wait by the door for Steve who emerged with Barnes a moment later. She whispered something in Steve’s ear and pointed over at you with a smile. Steve nodded and waved with a small smile of his own. Barnes followed his gaze and instantly he perked up when he noticed you. He swaggered toward you, past the gaggle of girls waiting to try and get his attention, you noticed a couple of them glare in your direction. You stood with your arms crossed over your chest, sketch book tucked against your side. You looked up at him as he came up to you making a complete stop a foot in front of you. He really didn’t care about personal space, you took one step back so you didn't have to crane your neck as much to look him in the face.
“And what do I owe the pleasure today Doodle,” you cocked an eyebrow at the nickname, and squinted slightly. The nickname didn’t make you scrunch your nose or want to gag so it wasn’t the worst. You sighed heavily and danced on the balls of your feet for a moment. He just stared, watching you intently, a dumb cocky smirk plastered on his face.
“Would you let me draw you for my art project?” You asked, you wished the weight bearing down on your shoulders lifted but it didn’t. You dreaded the thought of spending more time with this menace of a man. His lip twitched further upward and showed some of his perfect white teeth.
“Ah Doodle, I thought you'd never ask,” he ruffled your hair with one of his big hands. You groaned and moved your head from him and tried to fix your hair.
“Don’t touch me, please,” you said sternly. “I just need permission to draw you and use your likeness.”
“Ah don’t be like that,” he moved forward and you stepped backwards and to the right, dodging him. He huffed in annoyance and you stared at him with your arms crossed again and slight scowl. “Will you be at the game tonight?” He asked, finally standing upright, his own arms crossed across his broad chest.
“Seats are sold out besides the reserved seats for team partners,” you stated, “so no not tonight.”
“There's always a seat reserved for my girl, you can have that one,” he stated matter of factly.
“I’m not your girl,” you said back firmly. “This whole thing is for my art project,” you moved your hand jestering to both of you, “it ends once my project is done.”
You couldn’t quite place the look on his face after you said that, but you could pick up the small look of challenge in his eyes. It seemed he was making this game, like he was contemplating how long it would be before you would cave and give him what he wanted. Another notch in his bed post. From what you could tell based on his body language alone he was not used to being rejected. Women usually flaunted over him and fell in his lap, all he had to do was choose who he wanted at that moment. Your determination to not be one of those girls was considered a challenge to him, met head on with stubborn determination to break you down and get what he wanted in the end. That made your stomach twist at the thought, he only wanted to do this to sleep with you, have some fun and then dump you off on Loki’s lap heart broken.
You shook your head, lost in your own thoughts. Barnes was still looking at you, a contemplative look on his face. He had his chin in his hand as he rubbed it, “this will be fun, see you tonight Doodle.” You glared at him as he walked away, twirling his keys around his finger.
“Jerk,” you said softly to yourself before you made your way over to Nat and Clint.
“Well that went better than I expected,” Nat said quietly as the three of you left the rink until you had to be back later.
A sleek black car was parked at the curb, you waved goodbye to Nat and Clint as you ran over to the car and slid into the passenger seat, you rolled the window down and shouted “goodbye! See you later,” Nat waved and they continued walking.
“Hey Loki!” You said cheerfully.
“Hello darling, I take it asking Barnes went well?” He asked as he put the car in drive and pulled out from the curb.
“It went alright. The cocky bastard,” you clipped your belt in place and turned your head to look at Loki fully. “He’s already flirting with me,” you shook your head in annoyance.
“At least he has good taste darling,” Loki said sweetly as we sped down the freeway into town to have an early dinner.
“Have fun darling,” Loki shouted out the open window of the car as he dropped you off at the arena. You turned back and gave him an unamused smile and flipped him off.
“Yeah, fuck you,” you said with a slight laugh and turned away, waving, “love you dork,” you said over your shoulder. Nat was waiting just inside the arena for you and led you to your seats.
“So one of the perks of dating hockey players? Free seats?” You mused sitting down next to her, the arena was still pretty empty as the game didn’t start for 45 minutes.
“One of them,” she chuckled. Warm ups started and Clint stopped for a moment in front of us and lifted his helmet.
“Hey girls,” he said with a smile before darting off to warm up.
“Looks like Barnes just noticed us,” Nat said as he skated over.
“He had me clocked from the parking lot,” you grumbled. Nat laughed loudly and placed her hand on your shoulder wiping a tear from her eye.
“You’re not wrong,” she said between giggles. Barnes skated forward and came to stop sending glittering flecks of shaved ice toward the glass.
“Nat, Doodle, how's my new favourite girl?” He asked with a cocky smile. You rolled your eyes, and placed your cheek on your hand as you looked at him with a deadpan expression, Nat smirked next to you. You watched as Barnes ran his tongue over his teeth, he then winked and skated off to join warm ups.
“Do the woman he dates actually like that attitude?” You mused absently as you doodled on the open page of your sketchbook. Nat shrugged.
“Honestly, they’re probably more interested in his looks, and don’t care about anything else. That or the potential paycheck he’ll be earning if they can tie him down long enough,” She said softly. Your gut twisted uncomfortably at that, and you grimaced. Sure the guy was an arrogant prick, but he deserved better than that. Nat noticed your facial expression and nodded. “It’s not really fair, there's moments when he’s more than the arrogant show off, he’s pretty sweet. I think he’s just gotten used to hiding it; he doesn't bother being anything else.”
“Be what they expect of you and no one will question it,” you hummed. You mindless doodles turned into a simple sketch of his face. You admired the sharpness of his jaw, his mouth set in a soft line that was slightly upturned.
The game started, and you were too focused on watching Barnes skate to really watch the game. Not that you really understood the sport enough to really understand what was happening in front of you. First intermission passed and they were half through the second period when a black punk landed on your sketch pad. It startled you and your head shot up and you meant Barnes eyes. Nat was giggling next to you as you picked the offending puck up and handed it to the kid sitting behind you, who happened to be wearing a Barnes jersey. The kids day was made and Barnes’ narrowed his eyes at you. You smirked back in return and went back to drawing.
The crowd erupted in loud chants as Barnes scored with less than a second left in the third period, winning the game for your college. You watched as Barnes skated around celebrating his goal only for the captain of the other team to get up in his face. You tensed up as you watched the guy push Barnes shoulders and then grab his protective gear getting in his face.
So the rest of the team came to investigate and there was an all out brawl on the ice right in front of you. You stood up and looked down. Barnes was on top of the captain, his fist raised and he was breathing heavily.
“Bucky,” his name left your lips before you could stop it and he had to have heard you because his face tilted in your direction for a fraction of a second and the captain took that as an opportunity to flip Barnes over and bring a hard fist down on the bridge of his nose. You shrieked as blood gushed out of Barnes’ nose. Nat was standing next to you as you both watched in horror.
You turned your head and saw your college coach hopping the bench and helping refs break it up. Steve hauled the other team's captain off his best friend and shoved him into the arms of other teammates who pulled him further away. Steve helped Barnes up and took his face in his hands, Barnes just gave him a dopey smile. His gaze turned to you for a moment and he smiled a bigger smile. You looked at him with wide eyes and your mouth agape, horrified.
The captain of the other team didn’t look like he fared much better. He was bloody and his eye was swelling shut with each passing second. Coach Fury looked pissed, and was stalking over to the other teams coach for a few words, a ref following close behind.

🃏 for the sambucky prompts, if you'd like?
Thank you! This is for the ‘Are you joking right now?’ Prompt. Enjoy!
The look on Bucky Barnes’ face was one of shock and hurt. His eyes darted between Sam and Steve as they both stepped out of the walk-in pantry. His gaze finally settled on his best friend, Steve.
“What the fuck?” asked Bucky while pushing past the other revelers, stomping through the kitchen, and walking up to Steve. “Are you joking right now?”
In that moment, Sam remembered why he didn’t much like going to parties as he stood awkwardly in the kitchen and watched his classmates, the pair of best friends, apparently at odds. The jovial mood in the room had shifted quickly. The game of Seven Minutes in Heaven suddenly paused as the other teens found the confrontation in front on them much more entertaining.
“Buck, come on, man,” said Steve, holding his hands up.
Bucky’s eyes narrowed on his friend, before he looked over at Sam who was standing there wearing a confused expression on his handsome face.
“Y’know what? Screw you,” said Bucky as he poked Steve in the chest and then walked away.
The whispers and oohs of the bystanders blurred as Bucky hastily made his way outside into the backyard. He felt like his chest was caving in. How could Steve do that? How could Steve agree to go into that pantry with Sam for that stupid kissing game when he knew how much Bucky liked Sam? How could he be such a shitty friend?
Bucky was fuming but he also wanted to cry. Just then, the sound of his name being called got his attention. It was Sam Wilson.
“Fuck,” said Bucky under his breath as he tried to calm his heart, fight back tears, and smooth back his hair.
“Bucky? Are you okay?” asked Sam as he came to a halt nearby.
Bucky turned and saw the look of genuine concern in Sam’s pretty brown eyes. He stood there with his arms crossed over his front. He looked adorable in his oversized hoodie. Just his presence made Bucky feel calmer.
“I’m fine,” Bucky lied, his voice cracking and betraying him.
“Steve doesn’t think so,” said Sam.
“I don’t care what Steve thinks,” Bucky snapped, then immediately regretted it. “Sorry. I’m sorry. I just – I can’t with that guy right now.”
“What happened?” asked Sam as he stepped closer to Bucky. “You seemed really mad at Steve. I don’t know what he did to upset you.”
Bucky looked at Sam, all pretty in the soft glow of the overhead fairy lights. He looked shy as he added, “But I – I really don’t like seeing you upset. I mean, I don’t like that you’re upset. It’s – yeah, I just want you to be okay.”
Sam’s genuine concern chipped away at the hurt that Bucky was feeling only moments ago.
“Thank you,” Bucky said softly. “You’re a good person, Sam. A better friend than Steve.”
Sam frowned then and asked, “What did he do?”
Bucky looked at Sam and then dropped his head, before saying, “Ain’t it obvious?”
Sam shrugged and said, “Maybe, but my Mama always says I got my head in the clouds so I kinda sorta might’ve missed it? I mean, it’s cool also if you don’t wanna tell me –”
“It’s you,” Bucky blurted out before Sam could finish what he was saying. “It’s because of you. I’m pissed at Steve ‘cause o’ you.”
“Oh,” said Sam, suddenly taken aback. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to cause trouble between the two of you. I don’t even know what I did, I just. I’m sorry.”
He stood there looking more confused than before, maybe even a little hurt. Bucky couldn’t stomach that. He stepped closer to Sam then.
“Hey, it’s – you don’t have to be sorry, okay?” said Bucky softly; his own hurt fell away as the need to comfort Sam took over. “You didn’t do anything wrong, Sam.”
“Then why were you so upset at Steve, and what did I have to do with any of it?”
Bucky sighed loudly and then ran his hand through his hair. He didn’t want the moment that he told Sam how he felt to be like this. He imagined it would be a lazy afternoon hanging out in Sam’s bedroom with soft light streaming through the curtains. Bucky would call him pretty and tell him how much he liked him more than a friend. And maybe Sam would say he liked him back. And then they’d hold hands, and maybe share a kiss or two. And maybe he would ask Sam to be his boyfriend, and Sam would say ‘yes’ and then everything would be right in the world. But that wasn’t going to happen, now, because Sam was standing in front of Bucky looking for answers.
Bucky took a deep breath and finally said, “Because I – I like you, Sammy. I mean, it’s gotta be obvious. I’ve liked you for ages now, and Steve knew that. He knows how much I fuckin’ like you, but he still – he still went into that room with you and played that stupid kissing game with you, even though he knows how I feel about you.”
“Are you joking right now?” asked an incredulous Sam.
Bucky knit his brow and said, “What? Of course not. I’m serious. I’m like so fuckin’ crazy about you, and Steve knew that, and still made out with you.”
“Bucky, Steve and me didn’t make out or anything like that,” said Sam, now looking slightly amused.
“You didn’t?” asked Bucky. “But that game – doesn’t it – don’t you have to kiss the other person you’re locked in the room with?”
“Nope, you don’t have to.”
“Oh,” said Bucky, letting the realization set in. “So, what did the two of you do in there for seven minutes that had Stevie smiling like that?”
“We umm just talked,” said Sam. “Well, actually, Steve listened while I did most of the talking.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, I was actually ah y’know, telling Steve about my crush.”
Bucky’s heart clenched but he urged Sam to continue, “Your crush? That’s umm that’s cool.”
It was not cool. Bucky felt like he wanted the ground to open up and swallow him.
“Yeah, Steve thought so as well.”
“Course he did. He’s a good guy and I’m a dumbass.”
“You are,” said Sam with a smile; it was contagious, and Bucky smiled too. “Such a dumbass.”
Bucky laughed then, and so did Sam.
“Why’re we laughing?” asked Bucky.
“Because of your dumbassery,” said Sam. “Because you thought me and Steve Rogers, of all people, were making out when I was there with him talking about my crush the whole time.”
Bucky’s smile faltered slightly then.
“Right, your crush.”
“Yeah, my crush,” Sam replied with a grin. “He’s pretty cool. He’s passionate and sweet. He’s a protector. He’s kind. A good friend. He’s a huge nerd and a complete dumbass.”
“Sounds great,” said Bucky as he placed his hands in his pockets and averted his gaze.
“He is,” said Sam. “You are.”
“Uh?” asked Bucky, glancing at Sam once more.
“It’s you,” said Sam. “You’re my crush. I was literally in that room with Steve talkin’ about how much I like you and how cute you looked tonight and how I was feeling brave enough to finally tell you how I felt.”
“What? Really?”
“Yes!” said Sam while smiling wider. “I know what it looked like, now. And I get why you’d be upset at Steve. But we were in there talking about you the whole time.”
“You were talkin’ about me? For the whole seven minutes?” asked Bucky, looking stunned.
“Yep,” said Sam, and then added a little coyly, “But I could probably talk about how kind and sweet and dorky and cute you are forever, to be honest.”
Bucky stared at Sam for a beat, just taking in the boy standing before him.
“Wow,” said Bucky just over a whisper. “I really am a dumbass.”
“Yep, but you could be my dumbass if you wanted,” said Sam, shyly as he dipped his head.
“You askin’ me out?” asked Bucky, as he inched closer to Sam.
“Yes,” Sam replied coyly. “So, would you wanna go out with me?”
“Yes! Fuck, yes,” Bucky replied eagerly.
Sam laughed and then so did Bucky.
“Cool,” said Sam with a dopey grin that warmed Bucky to his core.
“Cool,” Bucky replied, with a grin matching Sam’s. “So, I should go apologize to Stevie then, uh?”
“Oh, definitely,” said Sam. “But first, can we – I mean, can I please – kiss you?”
Sam looked so shy and adorable that Bucky could not help reaching up to caress Sam’s face.
“Not if I kiss you first,” Bucky teased as he leaned in and pressed his lips to Sam’s.

--------
Okay it was the only thing you did want to deal with. You just looked at them for a moment, you needed to think about a name right now. "Uh...Scarlet." you replied more like a question. They clearly doubted that but it's not like you could tell them who you were. Right now you just needed to not bring more questions and quickly came back in the future.
At your reply, Natasha scoffed and you looked at her with a sad look. The last argument you had with your moms was still recent in your mind but she didn't have to know that, at least not yet.
"Scarlet hum? Like the Scarlet Wi-" Sam tried to ask but you cut him off.
"No, definitely no. It's Scarlet like Scarlet Widow." you said proudly and everyone looked at you confused.
"Widow? Like the Black Widow?" Bucky asked and you sighed.
"No. Like the Scarlet Widow." you reply harshly.
"Okay, okay. Miss, Scarlet what do you want?" Strange asked, visibly annoyed by your interaction with the two men.
"I want to go back home." you replied.
"And where are you from?" he asked.
"Really far from here." Nobody seemed convinced.
"And where did you find this?" Natasha spoke for the first time and showed you your widow's bites.
"Oh thank God, you found them. Morgan would kill me if I lost them." you replied and the two teens chuckled at your attitude.
"You know it's not something a kid should have." Tony said and you rolled your eyes.
"I'm 18, so, technically I'm not a kid anymore and I have used this for nearly three years now so yeah how dangerous they could be." you said looking at the red headed when you finished your sentence.
"But they didn't work." Natasha said
"Yeah I know that's why I'm here. I need to repair them even if I don't really know how. I need to send a signal to the....to my team and to let them know I'm alright." you said and tried to be the most convincing possible.
"But we have some questions before." Steve said and you rolled your eyes.
"Birthday?" the Russian asked but you didn't reply. You can't tell them you were technically born aly six years ago. "Okay you don't want to reply." she sighed. "Parent's name?" she asked. You just stare at her but you didn't said anything. "Okay, another question. Why do you have the same power as Wanda Maximoff?" she asked.
You played with your fingers and when they think you'll finally reply you wiped their hope. "Can I talk to my lawyer?" you asked and they all exchanged a look.
Tony grabbed a phone and looked at you "Who are they?" he asked and you bit your cheek.
"Clint Barton." you replied and they were all confused. "You know Hawkeye, the Avengers" you added and that didn't make disappear their surprise.
Okay even in your univers Clint didn't really learnt anything about laws but if there is one person you wanted to confess anything it was him. Morgan is only 6 years old in 2024; your aunts are very good friends but you knew they couldn't really keep this to themself and for your uncle it's sure he could talk with your mom so he was the safe option.
Natasha just glared at you, it was clear that she couldn't trust you; she didn't say anything and just left quickly followed by the winter soldier. "Did I say something wrong?" you asked Peter.
"Honestly I don't know. She seems a little upset but I think she will call him." he replied.
"Oh okay, but why did the Snowman soldier follow her?" you asked and Amercia chuckled at the shity nickname.
"I'm not sure but everyone says there is something between them." Peter whispered and you frowned your eyebrows. Yeah of course your mom is good friends with Bucky but she's married to a certain Sokovian witch, right? The boy noticed your face and added in a whisper "You know they are a thing. Like they date each other."
"What??!" you yelled and the adults stopped their conversation to look at you. "No it's impossible. Are you sure about that?" you asked a little quietly.
"Yeah it's like everywhere on the internet." he replied casually.
"But it's impossible I need to...I mean I ship her with Wanda." you corrected yourself and ignored America who raised her eyebrows to you.
"Sorry not sorry. I think you missed a lot of things because right now I don't think it could have anything between her and Wanda." he said and when you wanted to ask why Natasha came back.
Everyone looked at her but she focused her gaze on you and it remembered you all the time she was about to ground you. "He will be here tomorrow." she informed you and you nodded. "We will let see you tomorrow. Steve will bring you your lunch later." she said and left.
“So I think we can go back from where we came too.” Strange added.
“No!” you stopped him. “Actually I’ll need your help to go back to my home.” you informed him.
“And what makes you think I will want to help a perfect stranger who I don’t know her name?” he asked you.
“Because…you’re an avenger and the Avengers help the ones who need it.” you said. “And also because you’re one of the most powerful users of magic here, and I’m pretty sure my problem needs magic.” you added.
“I’m the supreme sorcerer, I’m not ‘one of the most powerful magic users here’. I’m the most powerful.” he explained and you rolled your eyes.
“Okay if you want but I think you forgot Wanda. She can alternate reality and she’s like the most powerful witch in this world, even if I’m the second one.” you said and America flinched a little. The action was unnoticed by everyone in the room except you but you didn’t find the need to ask her about that.
“Yeah, but I don’t think she would be able to help you for a moment.” the sorcerer said before leaving with the two teens before you could reply.
In the afternoon Steve came back to the kitchen with an empty plate. "She didn't say anything, I think she doesn't want to talk to anyone except Clint." he said and Natasha just nodded.
"Do you think it's a good idea to let her speak with Clint? She didn't look like someone we can trust." Sam asked.
"I don't trust her." the Russian said and Bucky looked at her confused. "I don't know why she wants to talk to Clint but she's silly if she thinks he will not tell me what she wants to keep hidden from us." she explained.
Tony came just after and throw your widow's bite on the redhead's laps she looked confused. "Look at them" she looked at them and then at the billionaire again. "More carefully." he said and she inspected them. She was about to give up until she found it, a little 'Stark Industrie' logo.
"But how?" she asked and Tony took back the weapons.
"I don't know but I think it's not the last secret this little thing hides." he said and went back to his lab.
--------
[Earth 717 - the Tower]
Tony was zoning out in the kitchen with a coffee cup in his hand, neither him or his daughter had a proper night. He was too far in his mind to hear the footsteps, he came back to reality when he felt a hand on his shoulder. "Hey Tony, are you alright?" Steve asked.
The billionaire placed the cup on the kitchen counter, "Honestly no" he admitted "I don't know what to do. We try anything Steve, we search in the multiverse. We used the power of America to help us but nothing worked." he said.
"I think you should try to sleep, after a good nap you will try again and we will help you." the super soldier saif and gave him a reassuring smile and led him in a bedroom.
~~~~
In your tower’s bedroom Morgan was here with Ava, your other best friend, she told her everything.
"Wait hold on, you are telling me that the most reckless person we know is lost somewhere in the multiverse?" Ava asked and Morgan nodded, "wow, it's the most Y/n-ish thing she ever did" she joked and the little Stark laughed. "But how are you? You don't look good so I think you stayed up all night with your dad to find a soluce."
"Yeah but it's more complicated than we thought."
"I don't even want to try to imagine all you did."
"We did a lot of things but it doesn't really matter we didn't find her."
"Hey don't say that you'll find her, like you always did. And she can't miss the gender reveal party, I'm sure she'll come back soon."
"Talking about that, how is my little buddy?"
"They are pretty good but I think I'm not ready for the next few months."
"Don't worry we will be here, like always."
'Ava was in front of your door, she was nervous but after five more minutes she knocked on the door. She didn't have to wait too long before Wanda opened the door.
"Hey Ava how are you?" she asked and your best friend almost cried at the question.
"Very good and you aunty Wanda?" she replied and even if your mom sensed it was a lie she didn't push her.
"Very well thank you. Y/n and Morgan are in her bedroom." she said and took a step aside to let the teenager in. Ava thanks her and after quickly greeting Natasha she rushed to your bedroom; she didn't knock and just enter and close the door quickly behind her.
You were playing Mario Kart with Morgan, you sprained your ankle at your last mission so you can't really go out. Your other best friend sat on the bed and you paused the game to look at her; she texted you two hours earlier to let you know she had to talk to you and Morgan and that's why everyone was there.
"Girls I fucked up" she started and the two of you exchange a concern look.
"Did you crash your mom's car? Don't worry my dad can get you a new." Morgan said but the other girl shook her head.
"Did you burn your house? It's okay, I'm sure my mama can reverse the thing." you said but she shook her head again.
"Okay now you start to worry us. What's happen?" Morgan asked. Ava took a deep breath and tears almost fell on her cheeks.
"Guys, I'm pregnant." she announced and she would look at your two faces if she was not too anxious about the news.
"You're WHAT?" you both yelled, in the living room Natasha looked at Wanda a little confused, her wife sensed you were shocked, happy and worried at the same time but she didn't know why. "From who? Since when? And most importantly does your mom know?" you asked her together.
"From Marcus of course, you know I'd never cheat on him. I've known about it since yesterday. And yes my mom knows, she's actually the one who encouraged me to tell you." she replied and you smiled.
"It's awesome Ava you always wanted to be a mom." you said and you hugged her tightly but you pulled back she was crying.
"Hey baby girl, what's wrong?" Morgan asked her.
"My mom was happy, she said she will help me. But him..." she couldn't finish her answer before she cried again.
"What did he say?" Morgan asked.
"He said he doesn't want to have a kid now and he broke up with me." she said.
"Honestly I understand him." You said "It's not easy to raise a child even more when we are only 18 but don't worry we will be here with you and I'm sure my moms would be more than happy to help you." you explained and she finally smiled.
~~~
You came back from Ava's first echography. The three of you were excited when you opened the door of your home. You quickly went to the kitchen with your friend where your moms were.
"Hi moms" you said and they looked at you.
"Hi girls, you seemed excited" Wanda said and Ava nodded.
"Mama, do you still have the book on pregnancy?" you asked and Natasha choked on her coffee. "That's not for me." you reassured them.
The Russian scanned your friend and lent her gaze on Ava who just waved shyly. "Wait no. Not you." Natasha said and Wanda looked at your friend confused.
"Yes it's me. I'm pregnant" she said and your moms started to cry and gave her a group hug.
"But how? I remember the first time Y/n brought you here after school. You were so tiny, you were a baby and now…" Wanda said and Morgan and you laughed at her attitude. Your moms cried, they saw Ava like her daughter too like Morgan or your cousin Luna.
"Time flies aunty Wanda" she replied and everybody laughed.'
Morgan yawned and Ava brought back to reality, "You need to sleep, I'll be here with you don't worry." she said and the young Stark nodded before she laid on your bed and started to sleep.
--------
[Earth 616 - Tower, the next day]
"Miss Scarlet, Mr, Barton is here." Friday said. You were watching a series after you convinced Tony to let you have a Netflix account. When you turned your head you saw Clint and Natasha, they both had a silent discussion before the man looked at you. He didn't make you wait and open the door to enter, the redhead was just behind him.
He sat in front of you and you just looked at Nat to wait until she left but she didn't. Fortunately for you the archer seemed to understand. "I think I heard Tiny said he would need your help with something" he said to his best friend and she finally seemed to notice and leave. "So, hi, I'm CLint but it seems you already know that." he said and you nodded. "So who are you?"
You took a deep breath and looked at him. "Okay, I know what I'm about to say would be weird but I need you to trust me." you said and he frowned his eyebrows. "You're the only one who can help me and keep my secret safe until I'm back home."
"And what tell you I would not tell you anything?" he asked.
"Because you're Clint Barton, I know exactly what you're capable of and I know you'll never tell what I'll tell you." you replied.
"You seem to trust me a lot but I don't know you."
"That's because my moms do."
"Your moms?"
"Yeah, you're the first who trusted them and allowed them to try to have a better life and change who they were." you declared but he didn't reply. "Okay, I'm Y/n Maximoff-Romanoff, and my moms are Natasha Romanoff and Wanda Maximoff." you said and his jaw dropped.
"But how can you? Natasha..."
"Can't have babies, I know. It's Wanda who carried me." you explained.
"But why do you tell me this? Why not Natasha or Wanda?" he asked.
"Oh I don't know because it seems a little weird to appear from nowhere and suddenly say 'Hey, I'm your daughter from the future. I don't know why I'm here but I can't go back home. Oh and I love your hair cut by the way.' See, it seems weird." you explained.
"Wait, you're from the future?" he asked.
"Yes, how do you think I could be so old when my mom only met 12 years ago?" you replied.
"You really talk like a Romanoff." he said and you smiled.
"Thanks, I think it's one of the best things someone said to me." you replied honestly.
"But now I start to think, how could I help you?"
"I just need you to fix my widow's bite and send a signal to Morgan." you replied.
"I stop you kid, I'm not the best with technology. And wait Nat let you use widow's bite?" he asked, visibly shocked.
"Technically, she didn't let me but I'm the scarlet widow and a widow without a widow's bite it's weird." you replied.
"Scarlet Widow?" he raised his eyebrow.
"Yeah because of my magic" you replied.
"Not because of something else?"
"Why do everyone think I chose this because of my mom?"
“Because you have the same habit of playing with your hands when you’re nervous,” he pointed at your hands. Honestly you didn’t realize you were nervous until her said it. “But what tell you Natasha didn’t put a mic on me?” he asked.
“Would you let her if she asked you?” he seemed to think about it before he shook his head. “See? Now I need your help, I’ll explain what to do.” you started but he cut you off.
“Sorry but you know that they can record us with Friday?” he asked but you smirked
“I’m the best friend of the little genius Morgan Stark, I know how to hack Friday easily.” you said proudly.
“Okay you’re really Nat’s daughter.” he said and you laughed. After twenty big minutes he finally accepted to keep your secret and help but with the condition to tell him all you know about the future partners of Lila, just to be prepared.
But when he made his way to the lab he was greeted by the last person who could possibly be there. “Oh Wanda, it’s a surprise to see you here.” he said. The Sokovian turned around at his voice, she seemed very tired and sad but she was like that since the incident with America.
“Hi Clint, uh- yeah, Fury sent me someone to tell me that the Avenger wanted to talk with me.” she said but didn’t make eye contact with the archer.
“It’s…nice to see you again…I suppose.” he said, clearly unsure if that was a good or a bad news.
“Oh you don’t have to act like this, I’ll just talk with them and go away as soon as possible.”
“Uh, I think you should be stay a little I mean you should have a lot to say with anyone…I really want to stay but I have something to do so, see you later.” he said and run in the lab before she could reply
In the Lab Clint saw Natasha and Tony, they were talking about something and he wasn’t focus on the conversation when he saw this. Your widow’s bites were on the table in front of the duo and according to the billionaire's face, it was something that even him couldn’t understand.
“Does anyone know why Wanda is here?” Barton said and gained the attention of his two teammates.
“Steve wants to recruit her back and according to Fury, I’m not qualified enough to oppose. And that even if that means to let a woman who attempted to kill a little girl in my tower.” he explained and the Russian sighed.
“Don’t listen to him; she’s here because we need her for any potential new menace.” she replied.
“You act like that because you don’t have children, Romanoff, but I’m pretty excited to know how you’ll act when she would harm your little copycat. Talking about her, what did she tell you?”
“She just said she needs our help to go back to her home. I think we can try to help her, she didn’t look like a threat or anything.” Clint explained and Natasha looked at him suspiciously. “And what is it?” he asked, pointing the device on the table.
“A little from our little guest.” Tony said, and Nat rolled her eyes. “I don’t know who did this but it’s a genius. There are a lot of gadgets in only one.” he added.
“Can I see it?” the archer said and took them before they could reply. He examined the thing while remembering what you said about how to send a signal discreetly. “And what is this button?” he asked, pushing it.
“I don’t know but it seems that nothing works.” Natasha said and her best friend hummed before he put your weapons down and took a step away.
--------
[Earth 717]
Wanda was sitting on the couch in the living room, she stared at the window. The sun started to set again and you were not here. She came out for her trance when she heard footsteps behind her, she turned round to meet the green eyes she loved so much. Natasha didn’t say anything, she just sat beside her wife and took her in her arms. It was always like this, when the Sokovian felt sad, empty or both; her wife would just hold her tight to remind her that she was not alone. They never end this habit even after your birth and when you were the reason she felt like this.
There was a comfy silence until Morgan entered the room visibly in a rush. “We have a signal.” she said and your moms didn’t wait before following her in her lab. “It’s not a big one so we think she sent it in a while now.” the young Stark explained when they were in the Lab with everyone.
“Like we excepted the signal don’t come from anywhere in our universe, but I traced it and I found the location.” Tony said while the screen showed a lot of earth planets until it stopped on one of them, he zoomed and a signal appeared on the screen. “Universe 616, I’ll do some research to know where exactly it’s from.”
The room was drowned in the silence and noise of the keyboard until they stopped. “Got this.” he said and everyone looked at the screen. “New York, from what seems to be the rest of an Avengers’ tower.” he explained.
“I can go now.” America said.
“No, we come with you.” Wanda said.
“Wanda, you retired from a while now you should let them go.” Tony said but the Sokovian didn’t change her mind.
“It’s my baby so, of course we come. I don’t want to hear anything, I should be there to protect her the first time.” she said and nobody wanted to argue. After she materialized her and Nat's suit, America opened a portal and they crossed it.
-------
[Earth 616, 2036]
On the other side of the portal, the three were ready to fight anyone who would face them but fortunately or unfortunately, there was nobody.
“Are you sure we’re in the right place Amrica, because it doesn’t seem to have a soul?” Natasha said while looking everywhere for a sign of you.
“Yeah, I came here a while ago but it was a decade prior.” she said and the woman nodded.
“I think we should split up to find her.” the red head proposed but she was quickly stopped by her wife.
“No, it’s not right.” Wanda said and the two other women looked at her.
“What’s happening Wanda?” the younger asked.
“She’s not here.” your mama whispered. “I can’t feel her, she’s not here.” she repeated louder.
“Hey honey, it’s okay, maybe it’s just because we’re in another universe so your powers don’t work.” Natasha tried to reassure her wife (or herself). “Let’s try to search a little.” she proposed and even if Wanda didn’t think it was a good idea she couldn't say ‘no’ when her wife looked so desperate.
Unfortunately for them after three hours of research and a world tour for Wanda in this universers they couldn’t find you. “I think we should go back now. We will tell Morgan to affinate her research the next time.” America proposed and even if they didn’t want to, your moms just nodded and after crossing another portal they were back home.
--------
[Earth 717]
When they came back everyone was expecting to see you but when they saw their faces, they knew.
“It’s impossible.” Morgan said before felling apart. You were not back, not yet.

hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have
Characters/Pairings: Bucky Barnes, Wanda Maximoff, Bucky x gn!Reader, side Sam Wilson Word Count: 2k Summary: He reluctantly agreed to this in the first place, but a nice afternoon turns into a darker night than Bucky ever could have anticipated. [Takes place after Wandavision and TFATWS but before Multiverse of Madness]
Content Warnings: DARK FIC, entrapment, somnophilia, dub-con, non-con, entrapment, non-graphic sexual situations (p in v), magic, sorcery, trickery…
Additional Notes: Written for @darkficsyouneveraskedfor's Mini March Challenge (literally the Pacific Coast eleventh hour of March 31st, but we made it), featuring a wicker basket and honey jar, a touch of praise, and a flash of voyeurism. I listened to a lot of Lana Del Rey, and the fic takes its title from her song of the same name (and I let Wanda use that as a beat of dialogue).
“Listen, we’re not far from the farm where she’s been staying. I know you don’t know her that well, but in case you forgot, she’s one of the ones who stuck her neck out for you at the airport in Berlin, went to The Raft with me, then went on the run with me and Steve.”
Bucky looked up to the roof of the SUV they were trundling along in. “I know, fine. I know you trust her, I just–“ Bucky broke off and took a deep breath. “After not being in control of my own mind for most of a century, you can’t blame me for being a little wary of dropping by to visit someone whose powers include mind manipulation.”
Sam opened his mouth and closed it again. A beat later, he said, “She’s on our side. I saw her a few weeks ago. I owe it to her to look in and see how she’s doing now and then, and it’d probably mean a lot to her if you came along with me.”
“You’re going to do that? Appeal to my redeveloping humanity?” Bucky rolled his eyes for show but smiled. “Fine. Do we need to pick up a pie or some cookies first?”
Sam grinned. “And you say you have no social skills.”
“What’s this?” Wanda asked, trying to hide a smirk.
“Buck here insisted we needed to bring something if we were going to drop in unannounced,” Sam said, clapping the super soldier on the shoulder and pushing him into the cabin.
“I – well – my ma always said it was the polite thing to do. Not my fault this one has no manners,” Bucky offered, holding out the wicker basket with two loaves of fresh bread and a jar of honey from a local bakery they’d found in the small town nearby.
“Plus, we eat a lot and didn’t want to wipe you out.”
Sam and Wanda both laugh.
Wanda reaches for the basket. “It’s appreciated. Go ahead and have a seat at the table. I’ll put the kettle on.”
When the afternoon sun is casting long shadows across the room as it fights to keep streaming through the windows and Bucky, Sam, and Wanda have demolished almost all the bread, the new Captain America and the Winter Soldier stand up to leave. Bucky had been nervous, but this has proven to be another normal thing, another connection he’s fostering and doesn’t have to worry about. This was good.
“It’s good to see you holding up so well,” Sam said, pulling his jacket back on.
“You don’t need to worry about me.”
“Thanks for putting up with our checkup intrusion,” Bucky added. “You know Sam can’t help dithering over us lost souls.”
“Always wanting to help,” Wanda agreed.
“You know what?” Sam interjected in protest. "There are people who appreciate my efforts."
Bucky and Wanda laughed. It felt nice.
“Actually, if you don’t mind, Bucky, there is something I was hoping to speak just with Sam about.”
“Oh,” Bucky hadn’t expected that, but he knew they had so much more history behind them. “Sure, I’ll just wait in the car.”
He really hadn’t minded leaving them to talk in private. Twenty minutes had been fine. He hadn’t even begrudged thirty minutes, but forty-five minutes seemed a bit too long. They could’ve told him, and he would have gone on a walk or something. Really the only annoyance was letting him think their conversation was going to be quick.
If they were talking for this long, maybe there was a real issue. Maybe he could help.
And now he did need to use the bathroom, so he had a reason to check in that wasn’t indicating the impatience he’d accumulated over nearly an hour.
He rapped lightly on the door with the knuckles of his right hand while opening it with the vibranium one – the reverse would’ve sounded a little more aggressive, even if it would’ve been more convenient.
“Sorry to interrupt, but I–“
Bucky looked around the open living and dining room of the main level. Sam was not here, and Wanda was sitting serenely on the couch, legs crossed, a cup of tea in one hand and a book in the other. Music was playing from a Bluetooth speaker in the corner.
“I was waiting for you to come back inside,” she stated calmly, closing the book, and setting it aside on the end table with her tea.
Without thought, Bucky had already adopted a defensive and alert stance, looking around for any helpful cues and cocking his head to listen for–
A long groan drifted down from the upstairs, cutting across the music.
“Sam!” Bucky moved with his preternatural speed to the stairs before Wanda could stop him and ascended, easily taking them three at a time.
What he saw when he reached the top of the stairs brought him to a full stop, his brows furrowing and his jaw dropping.
“What the hell is–?”
Another deep groan from Sam interrupted him, and no wonder. Bucky needed to look away, he really did, but he couldn’t – nor could he believe what he was witnessing.
On the other side of the lofted room of the cabin, Sam was naked on his back, a dark, misty creature seated squarely over his hips. The creature had its hands planted on Sam’s chest and was pumping itself up and down with Sam’s hands on the creature’s own hips to guide it.
“He is a magnificent sight, isn’t he?” Wanda crooned softly at his shoulder.
It was the tone of her comment that pulled Bucky’s attention away from the spectacle. “Choose your words wisely, Wanda.”
The brainwashing of the Winter Soldier was gone, but the unbelievable levels of control, precision, and restraint that had been honed by the US Army, heightened by the super soldier serum, and finetuned by the Soviets remained and were all that kept Bucky from ripping her limb from limb that instant. The rage was simmering right below the surface.
“It’s little known, but it’s quite a simple enchantment with the result of harvesting power. Copulation, particularly a moment of sexual climax, can generate a great deal of energy. An incubus or succubus draws that energy to sustain themselves, but this creature is an umbrabus, or a shadow of a sexual demon which I can absorb once it’s collected the energy.”
“You’re harvesting energy?”
“Mhmm,” she hums. “There are witches who steal power from other witches. This seemed more elegant a solution, and practically harmless.”
“Not harmless.”
Wanda calmly side-stepped him to adjust the drapes over the window as she responded, “He doesn’t remember.”
Bucky’s mind whirred, rapidly piecing things together what he was seeing with what he already knew and reports he’d read about this woman – back in Wakanda when he wanted to know everything about the fugitives who had turned with Steve and then the recent reports he’d hacked into SWORD and FBI servers to read in the car on the way to the cabin today.
“This isn’t the first time you’ve done this to him.” His hands balled into fists.
“No, it’s not.”
“What do you need the power for?”
“Aw, you’re too inquisitive,” she cooed, and stepped closer to him, reaching out as if to stroke his cheek, but he jerked out of the way. She still kept the small, serene smile on her face. “Don’t you worry your pretty head about it – that’s what they told me so many times.”
Bucky couldn’t stop the open glare that formed on his face.
Wanda just laughed.
“I could tell you, but you won’t remember anyway. Like I said, he doesn’t remember. You won’t remember anything more than maybe a dream,” she said in a way he knew was trying to reassure him, but he was not naïve enough for that. “Let’s just say hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have.
“I can give you anyone you want,” she continued. “I gave Sam the woman he’s been dating and about to start introducing to people as his girlfriend back home. I always wondered… perhaps Steve?”
Without even thinking he had the redhead slammed up against the wall, lifting her by her throat in less than an instant. “Steve? You didn’t do this to him – to them, did you?” The rage that had been simmering now surged like fire through every vein of his body. Wanda had been with Steve, Sam, and Natasha for the better part of two years.
“No,” she eked out, “I did not know the breadth of my abilities then.”
She squeezed his forearm to get him to let her down, and he slowly acquiesced, lowering her to stand of her own volition again but kept enough pressure on her throat to keep her pinned. He might believe that she wasn’t practicing dark magic on his friends before Thanos. The report filed by a Monica Rambeau claimed Westview was grief with good intentions that were put right after Wanda realized the harm she’d caused – created. James Woo from the FBI had reported a similar view. But that was months ago…
Wanda licked her lips, then one of her hands moved up to draw patterns over his hand still on her throat. “Who do you want, James?”
Bucky shook his head. “No.”
Wanda tilted her head. “There’s certainly someone who must have caught the eye of a handsome soldier like you,” her voice lilted sweetly. Saccharine.
Bucky clenched his jaw as your face flashed in his mind, clear as day.
“Ah.” Her eyes gleam, and he feels the dread tighten in his stomach. “What a lovely creature.”
She began to whisper an incantation, and the words are far from the ten cursed Russian words that overruled his own agency for decades, but the dread it conjured was the same.
“No,” he plead.
Then there was the soft weight of a hand on his shoulder, and he whipped his head to see another dark, shadowy being. But as he grabbed the hand to remove it from his shoulder, the umbrabus transforms into a striking approximation of you.
He dropped his grip on Wanda, but otherwise he was now frozen, watching the shadow you. You weren’t naked, but nearly, in only too-tempting swaths of dark blue satin and lace. The being stepped forward and caressed his cheek, and he closed his eyes and didn’t jerk away as he had when Wanda reached for him, but he did try to turn his head and refuse the soft touch. He tried, but he couldn’t.
“Oh, James, there’s no harm in it,” Wanda said. “You can’t stop me from getting what I want, and this world has already taken so much from you, so why not get something you want?”
One hand of the umbrabus – he had to remember it wasn’t you, he had to – trailed delicately down his neck and along his shoulder while the other gently came to rest on his hip. It inclined its head toward him, then moved in and pressed hot lips against his throat. He groaned.
“It will hurt no one,” Wanda continued to speak, “no collateral damage, and you deserve a little happiness.”
The umbrabus’s fingers moved from resting on his hip to hook into the waistband of his jeans, and tugged him toward a bed Wanda conjured just a few steps away.
“Pleasure and happiness aren’t the same thing,” Bucky protested.
“Maybe not, but you will still feel it.”
Was he tumbling willingly onto the bed with you, no her, it?
Because he didn't want this. This isn’t you circling your legs around his waist and pulling his head down to kiss you. He'd only spoken with you a few times, and he didn’t want the falsification unfolding here to supplant the reality he had been looking to slowly build with you.
“And to think of all the strength and stamina you will give me as a super soldier,” Wanda whispered in his ear, trailing a finger down his spine. Where were his clothes? “The only one of your kind left, you will be such a good source of power it will be difficult to let you go, but I promise I will. I’m not the villain, after all.”
He sank into you
“Yes, doing so well for me,” she says softly.
And he was lost.

Bucky couldn’t believe he found his mate. He’d been drinking the fresh lake water when he’d smelled the most delicious scent he’d ever smelled, granted he couldn’t smell much, only what helped him survive. Werewolf senses were weird. He’d heard the sound of a twig snapping, that’s when he saw you, he felt a rush of desire and heat go through him, causing him to growl and scare you.
His response to that? Chase you, which ended with him getting a nasty cut on his leg. When you tripped and hit your head, he had dragged you to his cabin, thrown a blanket over you and went to his bedroom, laying on the big dog bed in the corner.
He’d been so wrapped up in trying to get the stinging pain to go away he didn’t notice you’d woken up, and when you took care of his wound? He was done for. He snuggled close to you the whole time Steve was there, he could see the knowing look in Steve’s eyes.
When you agreed to stay, to say he was over the moon was an understatement. He laid down close to the edge of the woods and had fallen asleep while he waited for you to get back.
(Present)
Bucky wakes up with a pounding head, his white fur coated with dirt. When he looks around, he sees he’s in a cage. He growls. Another wolf growls, Bucky turns his head to see a wild haired wolf, chipped teeth, and crazy eyes. Walker.
The fuck is this? He growls.
This is me claiming the forest for my pack, I see you have a beauty now, might have to check her out in person myself. Bucky could hear the smugness in Walker’s voice.
You lay a hand on her and I’ll rip your fucking head off. He was seething.
No need to be rude, James.
Don’t start that shit with me, Walker, let me go.
Hmm, no.
You’ll regret this.
I don’t think I will. With that Walker walks off, to where, Bucky doesn’t know or care. Walker must’ve forgotten what a feral alpha in rut is capable of, especially one trying to get back to his mate.
With his head pounding he decides to take a nap, Walker must’ve hit him harder than he thought. A couple of hours later he’s roused from his nap by the sound of someone calling his name.
“Bucky!” Steve whisper-yells for the hundredth time. Buck lifts his head and blinks.
Steve? What are you doing here?
“We’ve come to get you out,” Clint says. Bucky shakes his head.
I may be an alpha, and all of us together may cause hell but there’s no way we’d get past them. I have a plan. The first day of my rut and last day in my wolf form is when I’ll be unstoppable and I’ll break out. No one would dare mess with me.
Steve nods. “We’ll work on a plan to get a key, you sure this will work?”
It'll work, I’m sure. How’s Y/N? Is she okay?
“She’s fine, she’s with the girls.” Sam speaks up.
Tell her to go to my cabin and wait for me, I want the whole place to smell like her.
Steve nods and the boy's leave. The next time he sees Walker, he has a sparkle in his eye, he just hopes Walker doesn’t try anything on his babydoll, he’d kill him.
The next couple of days are pure torture for Bucky, the memory of your scent and the early signs that his rut is starting soon drove him crazy. He couldn't wait until he could shift back and bury himself balls deep inside you, yes you may be a complete stranger, but you were his mate and he couldn’t wait to spend the rest of his life with you.
Once he’d fucked you, the wolf part of his brain calming down, he’d be able to properly talk about the future with you. But until then he needed to fuck you.
Time seemed to go on forever, minutes felt like hours, hours felt like days, days-you get the point-until the moment finally arrived, turns out Steve didn’t need to get the key, Walker's dumbass was moving Bucky to a different spot at the perfect time.
Bucky let his muscles relax, his pupils dilated, he let out the most bone chilling growl Walker had ever heard.
Walker's eyes widen. You little-
See, any alpha is strong and powerful, but a feral alpha in rut? Wanting his mate? Is nearly unstoppable, the only person capable of controlling the feral alpha is their mate. Bucky pounced and his men followed. They effectively took down the wolves, establishing Bucky’s dominance, that he is not to be fucked with like this ever again.
He ran as fast as he could all the way back to his cabin, he could smell Walker had been there, his blood boiled. When he entered the cabin, he was punched in the face with your scent. A shudder went through him. He followed the scent to where it was strongest and found you, in his bed, wearing his shirt.
He growled. When he saw you wake up and see him, he shifted. Once the big, fluffy white wolf, now stood a 6’5, muscular man, nice golden tan, brown locks that framed his face perfectly, the same piercing blue eyes, and a shiny silver metal arm.
You could see the scares that littered his left shoulder where metal met flesh, but it only served to make him even more beautiful. Last, but not least in the bit, standing proudly, at least nine inches, girth making him wider than what you could wrap your hand around, his cock red and throbbing.
Bucky inhales deeply when he sees your pupils dilate, smelling your arousal.
“God damn babydoll,” he mutters in a husky, lust filled voice. “You’re in my bed, wearing my shirt, smelling like a fucking dream?” He groans, cock twitching.
He slowly crawls up your body, taking the shirt with him, leaving you in nothing but a flimsy pair of black panties that are thoroughly soaked through with your arousal.
He brushes his lips against yours, but doesn’t kiss you yet. He drags his nose down the collum of your neck, through the valley of your breasts, pausing to nuzzle your, soft, pudgy stomach, He continues till he reaches your pussy, he takes a deep breath and moans.
“You ready, babydoll?”

Hello there! 👋😀
I was thinking of Bucky who volunteers with the elderly (considering his real age ) headcanons, please ! 🧓
No pressure of course ! 🫡
You. You get me. 😁♥️
Bucky Volunteering With the Elderly HCs
So I think it actually started at Sam’s request.
He understands Bucky to a good degree, being a trauma counselor and one of his few, but closest friends (despite the bickering lol). So he suggests Bucky get out into the real world again since that’s what helped Sam. He recommended Bucky reconnect with real people, and people from his own time at that.
Sam of course goes with him for his first visit. And while Bucky is a little nervous/awkward at first about how this will go he’s quick to loosen up
“Oh! Aren’t you a handsome one!” An old lady tells him, “how old are you now?” And he just smiles, “oh I turned 107 a few days ago.” The nurses of course think that it’s a joke, but the old people are the truth of it.
"Oh! So, you remember Joan Bennett and those silly weather prophet toys?" The old woman said excitedly. "Remember her?" Bucky says with a big smile, "She was my first crush. My mom and sister loved little women when it first came out."
All the older ladies adore talking to him, telling him all about their newly single kids (who are all like 60-70) and reliving pleasant memories of decades gone by. But Bucky does also make a point to visit with the men and old Vets and such too, where he's finally able to relate to someone outside of Steve. Though the old folks often forget some of the hard times (for which Bucky is glad for) they do get to recount a lot of good laughs and shenanigans they got up to In their respective squads.
Bucky doesn't even realize that by the time he's done and ready to leave that it's already been 4 hours. Sam even went to get lunch and come back.
After that Bucky makes it a regular thing. If he's not off doing missions and has a good chunk of downtime he'll go volunteer to spend time with the them. The staff and nurses of course absolutely love him and thank him profusely for his time and the way he's really lifted up the patients moods lately.
He also makes a point to remember people's birthdays. Bringing them flowers or a piece of pie from the diner down the road. He's also not above sneaking in some contraband either (mostly beer, nude magazines, and harmless prank items)
Of course becoming friends with old people also has its draw backs... and Bucky's heart breaks whenever he loses a new friend so quickly. He'll make a stop in at the funeral or wake, say his condolences and such, but doesn't usually stay very long. Honestly he's just happy to have known them in the first place.
But! To end on a happy note: you know the staff gave Bucky his own little locker or coat hook to put his stuff away in. He's in there so often that they actually print out a little name card and everything (Sam might be a little jealous).

Chapter 4
Pairing: Mob boss!Steve Rogers x Maid single mom!reader
Word count: 6.9k
Warnings: mentions of blood, hospital visits, mentions of a seizure, Elijah being a lil shit (in a cute way of course),
Series Masterlist
“Where is she?” Steve demanded an answer through gritted teeth.
“She’s resting in her room.”
“Why didn’t anyone call me sooner?”
Steve took the stairs two at a time. He was furious and someone would be paying for this soon enough.
“You had that meeting with Hansen. If I remember correctly you said to not disturb you because you wanted to get it over with as quickly as possible. Also the doctor was with her anyway.” Bucky said as he followed Steve up the stairs.
Steve didn’t knock, he just slammed the door open. Peter sat at the foot of the bed and jumped at the sound.
“What the fuck?” You said as you walked out of the bathroom. “Can you be more careful?”
“Who did this?” Steve ignored your question and looked from Peter to Nat, who was reluctantly laying in bed.
She had been cornered while she was alone. Now Nat was a good fighter, even one of Steve’s best. She also had gained his trust a long time ago, along with Bucky and Sam. So whoever did this knew her abilities to defend herself and still managed to get the upper hand. That wasn’t good, it meant his people were being watched.
“You know who it was. They were sending a message. If they can get to us, they can get to you.” Nat said between pained breaths. She looked bad. Black and blue bruises all over her face and chest. She had a cut lip and a few scratches as well as one eye shut due to the swelling.
“We’re going to send a message back. Do you know who actually did it?”
“It was Quentin Beck.” That was all Steve needed to hear before he was out the door. Bucky again followed closely behind.
“Do you need anything else Nat?”
“I’d like to sit up a bit more.”
“Sure thing. Peter, come help me.” You moved around the bed and helped her sit up while Peter added some pillows behind her.
“Thanks. Peter, could you get me my gym bag, it’s in the trunk of my car.”
“Sure thing.”
Peter hurried out of the room and Nat looked over at the nightstand and then around the room.
“Have you seen my phone?”
“You didn’t have a phone on you when you were brought in.”
“Fuck. Ok, you need to tell Steve they probably have my phone. Go.”
You say a quick ok as you hurry down the stairs and into the hallway that leads to Steve’s office. He’s yelling orders, you can hear his voice by the stairs. It takes you knocking a few times before Sam opens the door. The tension in the room is palpable.
“What?” Steve snaps.
“Nat wanted me to tell you that she thinks they have her phone.”
“Fuck. We have to go now. Someone call Jensen and Stark, let them know they need to burn the phone.”
Everyone starts walking out and you ask them to be safe. You close the door before Steve can walk out and the glare he sends your way would make anyone flinch but you don’t.
“Get out of my way.”
“Listen I know you’re angry but you need to calm down.”
“Calm down? Are you serious? One of the people I swore to protect almost died and you’re asking me to calm down?”
“Yes.” You say in a soft and almost sweet voice. “If you go out there blinded by rage how many more people will end up hurt? They’re already pissed enough as it is, you can’t afford to lose anyone else.”
You see his demeanor change slightly. He’s still angry but he’s reigning it in.
“Also if anyone else ends up hurt I’m going to be pissed as fuck.”
The corner of his mouth lifts a little. The smile is barely there but you’ll take it.
“Even if it's me?” He asks.
“Meh- depends on how injured you are.”
He smiles this time but it’s gone just as quickly.
“Be safe out there and make sure you kick some ass.”
“You’ll take care of her for me?”
“You know it.”
Steve nods in your direction before walking out and you sigh. It was barely morning and the chaos of it all was already giving you a headache. But you marched up the stairs again and checked up on Nat one more time before starting on your regular duties.
When your work day ended you waited about half an hour and no sign of Steve or his men. Dom and Coulson both nagged until you left.
You had been asleep for maybe half an hour when your phone rang. With Eli getting worse you were sleeping less. So you were in a bad mood as you answered the phone.
“What?” You didn’t even know who you snapped at.
“I’m sorry for calling at this time but we need you at the house.”
“Coulson? What happened?”
“I’ll tell you when you get here. You’ll be getting paid four times your regular pay.”
“Uh- I need… I need a few minutes.”
“That’s fine. Dom will pick you up.” He didn’t wait for you to reply.
“Fuck.” You mutter as you dial Mrs. Fields number and ask her to stay with Elijah.
****
“What the fuck happened?” Your eyes grew wide as you took in the living space. There was blood everywhere. The floor, the walls and the furniture. It’s like the fight had happened right there.
“They just got back not too long ago. No one is seriously injured but we need to get rid of the blood. Boss only trusts you and that you won’t say anything.”
“Of course not. Before I start with the cleaning, does anyone need anything?”
“Probably some steady hands. The adrenaline is wearing off by now. They’re taking care of their wounds.” Coulson informs you as he nods towards Steve’s office.
****
“It’s gonna hurt baby but I’ll be quick.”
“I’ve heard that before.” You hear Bucky say with a chuckle.
“You guys are together?” You ask from the door.
Both Sam and Bucky turn to the door, the latter turning red immediately. Sam just gives you a small smile.
“You didn’t know?” Sam asks.
“Didn’t have a clue, you guys are cute together.”
“You hear that babe, we’re cute together.”
“I knew that already Samuel.” Bucky rolls his eyes.
“Anyways, what are you doing here?”
“Doing what I always do, cleaning up your messes. But I wanted to check in to see if anyone needed anything.”
“We’re good here but maybe check in on Steve. He’s up in his room. The other guys are in the kitchen.” Sam says and you just nod and leave them be. You can hear them saying sweet nothings to each other and can’t help but smile.
As you walk back out toward the living room you see Clint and Scott on one of the couches. They were beaten and bloodied too and they were getting the couch dirty. You sent a worried glance in their direction but they just waved you off as they rummaged through the first aid kit. On the stairs there were drops of blood everywhere and they led all the way to the third floor, Steve’s floor. It made you wonder how bad it had been and if this was a win or a loss for him.
You knocked at the door, where you could see a smudge of blood on the doorknob. There was no answer so you knocked again and still nothing. Worry settled into the pit of your stomach at the thought that he may be passed out on the floor. You open the door and call out his name but nothing. His clothes are on the floor by the bathroom and you hurry over and knock but don’t really wait for a response.
“Steve, are you o-oh my god! I’m so sorry.” You turn around and cover your eyes when you realize his state of undress.
“Y/N, It’s ok I have sweats on.”
“Still I’m so sorry I didn’t mean to barge in on you like this. It’s just you didn’t respond and I saw the blood so I thought you needed help.” You rushed out.
“It’s really ok, you can turn around now.”
You drop your hand and turn around, he does in fact have sweats on. How had you not noticed? More importantly, how had you not noticed the injuries he had? The longer you stare the more you realize he has tattoos all over.
“What the hell happened?” You rushed over, completely forgetting the embarrassing moment just seconds ago.
“A fight.”
“Yeah but everyone looks like shit. Did you lose?”
“Not really.”
“Well if this is you winning I don’t want to see you losing.” You say as you look up at him. “Let me get the first aid kit.” You turn and head to where Steve keeps the first aid kit. “Sit.” You motion for him to sit on the countertop.
“Why here?”
“Because my back hurts and this will be easier to reach the cuts.”
He just nods and sits where you told him to. Steve’s breathing is even until you touch him around his ribs. You think it’s because there’s pain but he knows better. The light touch of your fingers on his skin sends shivers down his spine and although he’s imagined your hands on him it was never like this.
“Steve?”
“Sorry what?” He looks down at you.
“I think you might have a concussion or some type of head injury.”
“No, I was just thinking about what needs to happen next. I’m fine.” He says but really he was thinking about how your touch would feel everywhere else on his body.
“Ok well this is going to hurt.”
You work silently the next few minutes, cleaning and bandaging him up. During the whole process you feel his eyes on you. Every move you make he watches silently.
“Ok, all done.” You put away all of the supplies and make a mental note to have Coulson refill it. “I should go and get started.”
“Thank you, for everything.”
“Of course. Call me if you need anything and please rest.”
“Doctor’s orders?” He teases and you level him with your best mom glare. “Fine. I’ll rest. Maybe I should have put you out there to interrogate people.”
“The house would be less bloodied.” You murmur before pointing at the bed. “In bed, now.”
“Ok mom.”
You laughed because he sounded so childish but you noticed the way his eyes softened as you did. Like you instructed Steve laid in bed but grabbed his phone and made some calls. There was more to be done and Quentin Beck still needed to answer for what he did.
You made it home right around noon and were beyond exhausted. You dismissed Mrs. Fields and took a quick shower, thankful that Elijah was taking a nap. Instead of going to your couch you scooped him up and cuddled with him as you took a nap of your own.
The afternoon was spent in a daze. Some sleep, some tv and some food while you stayed close to Elijah. At around nine at night you get a text from Coulson telling you to sleep tight. It was code for don't leave your apartment, which meant that whatever was going on with Steve and his enemies was close to where you were.
For most of the night it was fine. You were watching a movie with Elijah but when you turned to tell him something he was slumped to the side. His breathing was shallow and he was non responsive. You panicked and dressed in your pajamas you grabbed him and your purse in order to get to the hospital.
*****
Steve and the rest of his men had taken up residence in the waiting room of the hospital. Everything had gone sideways in a heartbeat and now they were waiting for news for one of their own. He was already anxious enough but the next few minutes would leave him utterly confused.
“Help! Someone please… he’s not breathing.” Steve heard your voice, frantic and desperate as you walked in through the emergency room doors.
Bucky and Sam immediately got up and stood next to him to see what was going on. The last thing they expected was that you were carrying a child.
“Please, help him! He’s not fucking breathing.”
Your second cry for help snapped Steve into action.
“You,” he pointed at a nurse that was taking his sweet time on the phone. “Get your ass up and help her.” He got in the nurse’s face, his voice low and menacing. “If something happens to him I will end you.”
The nurse looked like he was going to shit himself. He rushed over to you as he called out for a stretcher. He asked you a few things before rushing him in to get Elijah breathing again. Steve had to hold you back from running after them.
“It’s ok, He’s getting help. You need to calm down, sweetheart.” He whispered but you still tried to free yourself from him embrace.
“Please he has to be ok.”
“Hey,” Bucky cups your face and wipes away the tears. “He’s going to be just fine.”
“You don’t know that.”
“They’re going to do everything they can, Doll. But we need you to breathe. You have to be ok when he wakes up.”
Bucky grabs your hand and places it on his chest and he takes a quick look at Steve who is still holding you. Both of them match their breathing as Steve softly asks you to do the same and eventually you calm down.
“Sweetheart,” Steve turns you around so that he can look at you. Your eyes are red and your cheeks are tear strained. It breaks his heart to see you like this. “Who is that? Is he your little brother or something.”
By now he had pulled you into the waiting room the rest of his men were at. They all knew you so they were concerned at seeing you so distraught.
“He’s my son.” You say in a low sad voice.
Steve was left speechless and so was everyone else. Never in his life did he imagine you to be a mother but a lot of things clicked into place. He silently told two of his men to move to allow you a seat and of course one next to you for himself. Steve never lets you go though, he keeps you tucked into his side but you’re too upset to notice the closeness.
“You have a son? Since when?” Sam asks.
“Since eight years ago.”
“This isn’t one of those situations where your parents died and you had to take care of your little brother so now you’re technically his mom but not really?” Scott asked really fast. Steve shot him a glare over your head.
“He’s my son, my baby ok. I carried him for nine months in my belly. I have the pictures to prove it or I can show you the video of me pushing him out of my vagina if you want. ” You snapped.
“Sorry, it’s just, you’re so young.”
You rolled your eyes.
“It’s called a teen pregnancy, look it up.” Then you look at him and frown. “I’m sorry Scott I didn’t mean to snap at you.”
“Ok that’s enough, everyone out. Except for Bucky and Sam.” Steve ordered, reluctantly the men left.
“Thanks.”
“No problem, sweetheart.”
He’s called you sweetheart three times in the last few minutes but you don’t say anything. Right now you relish having someone at your side. Sitting alone in the waiting room was always the second hardest thing for you to do.
“Do you need us to call someone?” Steve asks and pulls out his phone.
“No.”
“No? Your parents or your son’s father?”
You give him a humorless laugh.
“The latter broke up with me the minute I told him I was pregnant and the former kicked me out when they found out. So no, there’s no one to call.” You sighed, “Wait, maybe Peter? He knows about Eli. So does Coulson and Dom by the way.”
“I’ll call Dom, I’m sure he won’t mind coming in.”
“Wait, where is Peter? I haven’t heard from him all day.” You look from Bucky and Sam to Steve. None of them would look you in the eyes and you sat up straighter. “Why are you even at the hospital?”
“Sweet-“
“Don’t sweetheart me. Why are you here?” You ask again, cutting Steve off.
“He was shot. He’s currently in surgery, that's why we’re here.”
“Bucky what the fuck.”
“Thanks Bucky, at least you had the decency to tell me.” You glare up at Steve.
“I didn’t want to stress you out more than you already were.”
“Family of Elijah Y/L/N?” A nurse calls out from the doorway. Immediately all four of you get up.
“Is he ok?”
“Yes, we got him stabilized and we’ll be moving him to a room. Why don’t you follow me and I’ll take you to him. Only two people at a time though.”
“It’s just me.” You give the nurse a sad smile. You’ve only taken one step when someone grabs your hand.
“And me. Call me when you hear about Peter.”
Steve squeezes your hand to reassure you that he’s there for you. Both of you silently follow the nurse as she brings you to the small room Elijah is in until he’s moved upstairs. The moment you’re behind the closed curtain you rush over to his side. You take his hand and lean down to press a few kisses on his forehead before whispering that you’re there with him. Steve just stands back and watches the scene unfold. His heart aches for you and he wants nothing more than to give you some sort of comfort.
“If you don’t mind me asking, what does he have?” Steve asks after a few minutes of silence.
“The doctors don’t know what’s wrong with him or how to help. He’s been sick for about a year. We’ve tried different medicines but nothing seems to really work. He has his good days but recently it’s been all bad days. ”
You struggle to hold back a sob. Elijah’s health has been declining so quickly that you fear it’s only a matter of weeks or even days before you lose him. Steve gets closer to you and pulls you into a hug. You cling to him like your life depended on it. Even with Mrs. Fields there to help you, you’ve always felt truly alone in life. Somehow it felt different with Steve there.
Steve excuses himself for a moment and disappears outside of the curtain. Just as quickly as he left he comes back and wraps you in another hug.
The sound of the curtain being pulled back has you moving away from him. A young man walks in with a tired smile on his face and lets you know he’ll be moving Elijah. He moves around the space efficiently and soon enough he starts pushing the hospital bed down the hallway. Steve places a hand on your lower back and guides you. He doesn’t stop you from leaning into him while the elevator goes up. Your eyes are half closed when Eli is finally set up in a private room. That wakes you up and you’re quick to protest that you can’t afford a private room.
“Don’t worry about it, I’ll take care of it.” Steve tells you.
“What? No way. He’ll be fine in a shared room. There’s no way my insurance will cover this.”
Steve cups your face so that you have to look at him. His expression is stern as he looks at you.
“I don’t like repeating myself, sweetheart. But I will right now. Don’t worry about it, you focus on Elijah. That’s all you have to do, try to rest so that when he wakes up you can be there for him.”
“Fine,” you murmur before looking at the clock on the wall. “I can squeeze in two hours of sleep before I have to be in.”
“Be in where?”
“For work?”
“Are you fucking kidding me?” Steve mutters, looking st you completely dumbfounded. He has never met anyone that has made him go through so many emotions in such a small time frame.
“No, I have to work. I need the money.”
“Fuck the money, Y/N. As of this moment you are on paid leave and you don’t come back until he’s out of this hospital.”
You shake your head. “I can’t accept that.”
“Well you don’t have a choice.”
You both start whisper yelling at each other now. Steve grabs you by your arm and pulls you outside of the room.
“I do and I’m going into work.”
“And who is going to be here when he wakes up?”
“My neighbor, she’s his sitter when I’m at work.”
Steve rubs a hand over his face. The situation hits way too close to home. The only difference is that now he has the power to do something and he won’t take no for an answer, even if he knows you’re stubborn as hell.
“If you had to choose between you being here or the sitter being here if money wasn’t an issue, which one would it be?”
“Me obviously.”
“And I’m giving you that opportunity. Please, don’t think about work or about your paycheck. I will pay you, I promise. Just be here for him. I promise you there won’t be anything that will make your kid happier than you being the first person he sees.”
Your eyes well up with tears again as you look from Steve to Elijah’s frail form on the bed.
“Ok, but only for a few days and then I’m back at work. I don’t like just taking money, I have to earn it.”
“For fucks sake woman. How about you take a week and then we’ll talk about it.”
“One.”
“This isn’t a negotiation.”
“One day and I’m back at work.”
“Five.”
“Two.”
“Three,” he gives an exasperated sigh before shaking his head. “Three days and we will talk before you even think about working again.”
“Fine. Also you have to let me know how Pete is doing.”
“Deal. So is this what Peter found out when I had him follow you.”
You nod as you walk into the room. At the other end there was a window seat that doubled as a bed. There was a pillow and a blanket already folded and ready for use.
“I begged him not to tell you.”
“Why?”
“I didn’t want anyone to threaten Eli so that they could use me against you. I don’t want to put him at risk, I take a long way home just to make sure I’m not being followed.”
Steve’s hands were on his hips as he listened to you. That wasn’t something you should have to worry about when all you were doing was working to try and give your son a chance to live.
“Why not work somewhere else?”
“Because people don’t like to hire single mothers. Before I started working for you I had to work two to three jobs and I barely ever saw him. When I found the job posting as a maid I just went for it. It was enough that I could quit the other jobs and even get an apartment. But then he started getting sick and well here I am.”
He just nodded. It felt like he was watching memories from his childhood replaying right in front of him.
“I don’t need you to feel sorry for me or anything. I’ve managed just fine.”
“I don’t feel sorry for you. I admire you even more now.” Steve says. “Get some rest, I’m gonna head back to wait for news on Peter and Dom will be here in the morning. Anything you need he’ll get it for you.”
“Thank you.”
Steve just offers a small smile and walks out.
By day break Steve was already back on his way to the room Elijah had been set up in. He had some coffee and breakfast for you, as well as good news about Peter. Thinking you’d be awake he was already calling your name as he walked in.
“Y/N, the surgery was a success.” He stopped in the middle of the room when he realized you were asleep beside Eli’s bed. He frowned when he saw you hunched over sitting on a chair while holding your son’s hand.
Steve was surprised to find your son looking back at him. He placed the coffee and breakfast down on a table and moved the other side of the bed.
“Hi Elijah, how are you feeling kid?”
“Are you my doctor? You don’t look like one.” Eli asked in a hushed voice as he sized up Steve. He looked frail but tough.
“No, I’m your mom’s friend.”
“Wrong.” Elijah furrowed his brows. “My mom doesn’t have friends. And she doesn’t have a boyfriend either, so you’re not that.”
Steve chuckled but then cleared his throat when he saw Elijah was glowering at him.
“Well I’m sure she does have friends. But anyways, you can call me Steve and I'm your mom’s boss.”
“Oh, and you brought her breakfast?”
“Yeah. Is that bad?”
Eli shook his head. “No, but I’ve heard mom tell Mrs. Fields you’re an ass. So that was nice of you.”
Steve couldn’t help but laugh at that. Elijah was a little copy of you, especially that mouth of his.
“So how are you feeling bub?” Steve sat down as he waited for an answer.
Elijah looked from Steve to you and back. A certain kind of sorrow that no eight year old should ever experience crossed his eyes.
“My tummy hurts and so does my head. But really I’m worried about ma.”
Steve’s eyes softened as they looked your way.
“She’s barely been sleeping. I know she checks in on me while I sleep. And I know that she was probably really scared last night.” His lower lips trembled. “And I’m scared too.”
Steve’s heart ached for this kid. He knew exactly how he felt, having to spend so many nights in the emergency room with his own mother.
“Scared of what?”
“That I won’t get better and then ma is gonna be all alone.”
If mob bosses cried this is where it would happen. Steve had to look away for a moment and compose himself.
“Well, I’m not going to let that happen. I’m gonna make sure you see the best doctors available. But I need you to promise me something.”
“What?”
“That you’re not gonna give up. Even when you’re in pain or extra sick, you’re gonna keep fighting.”
“I promise.”
“Good.” Steve smiles. “Now, how about you wake her up and I’ll have the food reheated.”
“Ok.”
Steve stood up and grabbed everything. Just as he headed toward the door he could hear Elijah calling you softly. With a look over his shoulder he could see him gently caressing your face.
****
You stirred from your very uncomfortable sleeping position and were greeted with a very happy Elijah.
“Eli.” You smiled as you sat up and stretched. Immediately you felt the ache in your body from having fallen asleep the way you did. It didn’t matter though, your sweet boy was awake and that’s all you could ask for. “How long have you been awake?”
“A while.”
“Then let me get a nurse.”
“One already came by. I asked her not to wake you up. She didn’t say much, just that everything looked fine.”
“Ok, well I’ll ask when someone comes back. Did they say you can have breakfast?”
“Yeah, it will get delivered at the regular time.” Eli nods.
“Ok good.”
You smile again at him and stand to kiss his forehead. As you pull back you hear footsteps and assume it’s a nurse.
“Good you’re up.” Steve says as he stroll in. “Got you breakfast.”
You just looked at him for a moment. Surprised by the kind gesture you give him a quick thank you before taking what was in his hand.
“Elijah, this is my boss.”
“Steve, I know.”
“It’s Mr. Rogers to you.” You corrected.
“I told him he could call me Steve.”
“When did this conversation happen?”
“While you were drooling on your arm.” Steve teases. You send a playful glare, the exchange making Elijah giggle.
“How is he?”
“The surgery was a success.”
“Oh good.” You breathe a sigh of relief.
“What surgery?”
You looked over at Elijah wondering if you should tell him or not. “Peter got hurt. He had to have surgery but he’s ok now.”
“Oh, can we visit him?”
“I’ll see what we can do.”
There was a little knock on the doorframe and you all turned to see Bucky and Sam. They both had their arms full of bags and smiles on their faces.
“Good morning.” Bucky said as he walked in and proceeded to dump all of his bags on the window seat. “Hey kid.”
Elijah just looked at you waiting for an explanation.
“Eli, this is Bucky. My friend.”
“But-“
“If you finish that sentence you’re gonna be grounded until you’re 30.”
“You never told me you had friends. Why haven’t I met him before?”
“Because we’re new friends, kid. I also work with Steve and we’re best friends.”
“And him?” Eli motions to Sam who was also placing bags on the seat.
“I’m Sam. I’m also friends with your mom and with Steve.”
“What about Bucky?”
Sam and Bucky look at you to see if you were ok with Elijah knowing.
“Sam and Bucky are partners, baby.”
“Like cops or like boyfriends?” Eli asks.
“Like boyfriends.”
“Ma?”
The tone of his voice let you know he was about to destroy you with whatever he was going to say next. You frowned by m but answered anyway.
“Yeah?”
“If guys can have boyfriends now, you’re never gonna get one.”
Sam, Steve and Bucky started laughing and Elijah seemed very happy about it. Even if it was at your expense.
“Do you want your mom to have a boyfriend?” Bucky asks as he looks at Steve with a smirk.
“Maybe, but he’d have to go through me first. And I’m not gonna make it easy for him.”
“And now you have us and we’ll help you.” Sam adds.
“Ok, I think that’s enough about me. What did you guys bring?”
“Gifts.” Bucky announces with a smile. He moves over to the pile of bags and starts to walk some over to the bed. “These are ‘get well soon’ gifts. From your new uncles, kid.”
Elijah’s eyes were wide as he looked through the bags to find legos, remote controlled cars, a drone, another video game console, more video games and gift cards. He was so excited the nurse had to come in and check on him because his heart monitor was showing an increase in his heart beat.
“Can I keep it?” The question had been directed at you.
All eyes were on you. It wasn’t that you necessarily wanted to take these things away, you just wanted Eli to learn that not everyone would be as giving. To not expect everyone to just give him stuff, that sometimes he would have to work for what he wanted. Before you could say anything Steve caught your eye. He nodded with a small smile, silently telling you to let Eli keep everything.
“Of course you can, baby. You heard uncle Bucky. They’re ‘get well soon’ gifts. Now what do we say?”
“Thank you.” Eli beams.
“You’re welcome.”
Bucky and Sam move to sit beside him and the three of them start playing with some of the toys that are already on the bed.
“We’ve lost them.” Steve says jokingly as you walk to stand beside him.
“They’re gonna teach Eli everything I don’t want him to know aren’t they?”
“Yup.”
“I'm going to completely blame this on you.” You quip.
“I’ll take full responsibility. But while we’re here, I had them bring you some things too, so that you can freshen up if you want.”
Steve had started motioning for the other bags on the seat across the room when the monitors attached to Elijah started beeping erratically. He slumped backwards and he was unconscious on the bed.
“Get the toys off the bed.” You tell Sam and Bucky. The four of you move quickly and remove the last toy just as the nurses and a doctor walk in.
“Get them out of here.” A doctor instructs, referring to you and the guys.
Steve puts his arm around your waist and pulls you out of the room while you fight to stay beside Elijah.
“They need their space to work.” He mutters in your ear.
You stop trying to get out of his hold, it’s the only thing that’s keeping you up at the moment. Steve turns you away from the hospital room and into himself. Your silent tears make their way onto his dress shirt but neither you nor him seem to care.
“Ms. Y/L/N.” A doctor calls out as someone wheels out Elijah. “We are taking him to have some scans done but at the moment we think he may have suffered a seizure.”
“A seizure? But why is it happening?”
“It's only a possibility that it’s a seizure. We’ll do our best to find out what’s going on. We’ll bring Elijah back in about an hour or so.” He says before he walks away.
You just stood there, trying to process what you’ve just been told. This was just another symptom in a long list of things that had been happening to your son.
The men looked at each other unsure of what they should do. It was heartbreaking on so many levels. First, seeing a child so sick and with no answers was enough to soften the heart of most. Second, you yourself were fairly young and having to go through something like this wasn’t easy. Add to it that you were working for a very dangerous man and it added to your stress. Third, you were all alone from what they had learned. Well not anymore, I’m that moment Steve had decided that he was going to be there for you no matter what. He didn’t know that Sam and Bucky had spoken about the matter as well and they were willing to provide you support in whatever capacity you needed it. Whether it be emotional, physical or financial. Right now it was emotional and Bucky was the first to move and bring you into a hug and let you cry into his chest.
3 days.
That’s how long you had been in the hospital. 3 days and still no closer to any answers. Elijah was stable enough to be discharged and around noon Sam was waiting in front of the hospital in an SUV to take you home. He had already packed up everything for you the night before and taken it down to the house, all you had to do was walk down with Elijah and the nurse that was pushing the wheelchair he was in.
“There he is.” Sam smiled as you walked out the main glass doors. “Ready to leave this place little man?”
“Yeah, I just want to go home.”
Sam looks at you confused. The plan was to stop at your place to grab some things and then stay at Steve’s place for a while.
“Baby, we’re only only going to stop by the apartment so that I can get a few things. We’re staying at Steve’s place for a few days so that I can work.” You remind him.
“Oh ok.”
Sam gives you a sympathetic smile and helps get Elijah in the car before opening the door for you to get in. The drive is quick and before you know it you’re in your apartment grabbing a duffel bag and placing some clothes in there for yourself and Eli.
“Y/N?” You hear from the front door.
“In Eli’s room.”
“There you are child. Who is that man that has Elijah? He didn’t let me get close enough to say hello.”
“That’s Sam, he’s a friend from work.”
“My dear, where are you going? Did something happen to Eli?” She watches as you move around the room.
“Nothing new. My boss said I could stay at the house for a few days and keep Eli with me so I’m just packing a few things.”
“What, couldn't he give you the time off?”
“Yes, he was more than willing to give me the days off but I didn’t want to. So we compromised. I’ll see you in a few days ok. Could you lock the door on your way out? And call me if you need anything.” You say over your shoulder as you walk out and head back to the SUV.
****
Eli fell asleep on the ride to Steve’s place. So when you got there you grabbed him while Sam and Bucky grabbed your things. At the sound of Dom’s voice Steve steps out of his office and heads to the living room to find you with Elijah in your arms. God, you looked exhausted.
“Let me take him.” Steve says in a quiet voice as he grabs Elijah from you.
He nods his head in the direction of the stairs and you follow him up. You had agreed to stay on the second floor but he just walked past the hallways and up another flight of stairs, his floor.
“Steve. I thought we agreed that we would stay on the second floor.” You whisper.
“I changed my mind. I want you close in case you need me.”
He gets to the top of the stairs and heads to the left hallway. It’s still on his floor but there’s some distance. Steve nods towards one of the doors and you open it so that he can walk in. The room is huge as most of the other rooms are. This one has been prepared especially for you though. Elijah’s new gaming systems have been hooked up to the tv. There’s a basket with some self care products in it for you. Some new pajamas for both of you and the other things that Sam and Bucky had bought and taken to the hospital. Everything was neatly arranged and all you had to do was rest. This was a dream and it was why you were against it.
Going back to your small one bedroom apartment is going to be difficult. Especially for Eli since you know everyone will want to come by and spend some time with him. Bucky had even started a schedule so that everyone had time to hang out and not overwhelm him. The only type of support you’ve had since he was born was Mrs. Fields and you weren’t sure if it was that you were tired or your honest gratitude or a mixture of both but you wanted to cry. Actually you did cry, silent tears as you watched Steve lay Eli down and tuck him in. You had never seen him be so gentle and you asked yourself why couldn’t he be Eli’s dad. He would be a great father, you just know it.
“C’mere.” Steve startled you out of your daydream as he hugged you. You leaned into it, desperate for any kind of comforting touch. “It’s ok, just let it all out.” He rested his hand on your back and moved it up and down soothingly.
“I’m such a mess, I’m sorry.”
“You have nothing to apologize for. Why don’t you take a bath and then a nap. It might help you relax. I’ll have Dom send dinner for you both.”
“Oh it’s ok, I can go down and get it.” You say quickly but Steve just shuts the idea down.
“Nonsense. He already volunteered to do it.”
“Ok.”
Steve smiles and turns you toward the bathroom. “Go relax, you deserve it.”
“Thank you, for everything.” You say over your shoulder.
“It’s the least I can do.”
****
Later that night, before Steve goes into his room he can’t help but check in on you. He knocks softly but with no answer he decides to just open the door. The sight causes his chest to tighten. With the light of the hallway he can just make out your form on the bed fast asleep. Elijah clings to you like a koala with his head on your chest and your arms wrapped around him tight. As if he would disappear if you let him go.
Steve has decided then and there that he will do everything in his power to give you the answers that you so desperately need. The best medical team and treatment to make Elijah better and if you let him he’d give you so much more. But he knows you’re stubborn. He also knows that the way to get you to agree to anything is to include Elijah in it. Steve would be lying if he said that little boy hasn’t already stolen a piece of what he thought was his cold dead heart. But like mother like son and you’d both weaseled your way in there even when he promised himself he wouldn’t let something like that happen again.

Series Masterlist
It's late at night when Steve pours you a shot of Whiskey. "So, that was the Winter Soldier..." you ask rhetorically, thinking back on how Bucky had been screaming less than an hour ago when he had been triggered to become the Winter Soldier.
It seems someone had found a back door in JARVIS' system and had used it to link with the security cameras and the intercom system in the tower. Thank God for Wanda. She had surprised the soldier and used her amazing powers to contain him in the gym long enough for Tony to release the sleeping gas.
Swallowing the whiskey down, you enjoy the warm sensation in your throat, yet it doesn't seem to relax you after the events of the afternoon. It was five hours later and Bucky hadn't woken up yet. Bruce and Tony had taken the first two shifts to watch the sleeping soldier and to keep him safe. It was Sam's turn to watch him now.
"That was... that was like an echo of the Winter Soldier. The few times I've fought him, he was a lot worse. If Wanda hadn't been here you'd know what I'm talking about. When we first discovered that Bucky was the Winter Soldier, he took on Natasha, Sam, and I, and he almost won..." Steve's eyes take on a distant look, thinking back to that time.
"Wow, he's that good?" You knew he was a great fighter, Natasha even said he might be the best fighter in the Avengers group, but to hear it from Steve just made it seem more realistic. With Bucky's size and strength, you'd expect him to be slow, but he moved impossibly fast. The result of years of fighting and the serum coursing through his veins, you suppose.
"Yeah, he is that good. In the army, they said he was the best natural-born fighter that they had ever seen, and that was before he became a sniper too. When he's the Soldier, he's trained to do whatever the person who triggered him says. Doesn't matter if it hurts him, he has to listen. He's -" Steve is interrupted when Sam enters the kitchen.
"Yo, Cap. What do you need?" Sam asks, grabbing a shake from the kitchen.
"What are you talking about?" Steve's eyes narrow as he stares at Sam, "Why aren't you with Bucky?"
The colour drains out of Sam's face. "Scott said you needed me? You said he should watch Bucky instead?"
When Steve jumps up from his seat, he's furious. "Fuck!" Sam shouts as he runs down the corridor, running to the gym.
Steve shouts to JARVIS to lockdown the tower and inform Tony about what happened before the two of you run to the gym after Sam.
The bulletproof door of the gym is wide open and Bucky is nowhere to be seen. Steve cocks his head and is running down a different corridor when Sam flies through a wall, groaning as he tries to get up, the Winter Soldier lifting him by his throat, squeezing the life out of Sam with his metal arm.
Steve runs to the fight, kicking Bucky in the ribs, making him drop Sam to the floor. You rush to Sam, making sure he is still alive. From the corner of your eye, you see Wanda enter the room, fingers starting to light up as you pull Sam to a nearby wall to get him away from the fighting.
Bucky hits Steve hard in the chest, making him bump into Wanda and lose her concentration. When she looks up, the Winter Soldier is on her, grabbing her two small hands behind her back and knocking her into the wall before she slumps to the ground unconscious.
Steve runs to him again, the two super soldiers punching and kicking each other so fast, that you struggle to keep up with them. Like lighting, the Winter Soldier has Steve's right arm in his grasp, elbow pointing down before he brings his knee up, driving it into Steve's forearm. You scream as you hear the sickening sound of Steve's arm breaking, his bone sticking out of his bloody forearm. Not done with him yet, the Winter Soldier grabs Steve's shirt and spins him around, throwing him through a different wall into the next room.
You can't help the shiver spreading over your entire body as cold, merciless eyes meet your own. The Soldier bends down to you, grasping you around the neck as he pushes you against the wall, his eyes roaming over you.
"Bucky, please!" You shout, seeming to only anger the soldier in front of you as he snarls at you. "Winter, please..." You stammer, grasping onto his metal wrist, your hands too small to circle it completely. You take a chance and blurt out any excuse before it is too late. "They want me alive, don't they?"
The light pressure on your neck relaxes, but his hand stays where it is. He stares at you, eyes meeting yours before dropping to your lips for just a second and back up again.
"What are your orders, Winter?"
"Kill the Avengers and take you to them, unharmed."
You take a chance and rub your hands up and down his chest slowly, trying to coax him down from the edge. His brows knit in confusion. Has anyone ever willingly touched him before?
"Do you know who I am?" You ask him softly, your thumb rubbing his neck as you move your hands up.
"Your Y/N," he removes his arm from your neck and grasps your hips in both his hands, stepping in closer, "you're his woman."
Your heart beats in your chest, your mind racing to keep up with the soldier in front of you. "No Winter, I'm your woman. You're a part of him, so I'm yours too. I'm your kitten." You rub your nose in his neck, breathing him in as he does the same to you. You spot Wanda as she wobbles to her feet.
"My kitten," he whispers, before kissing your neck. You move your hands up, eyes locking on Wanda, as you try and relay a message to her in your mind before your hands grasp Winter's hair.
"Look at me, Winter," you beg him. He straightens up as you see Wanda exit the room, helping Sam slip out. "You don't want to hurt me, right?" He shakes his head before his lips meet yours, his kiss dominant and all too eager. When he breaks the kiss you continue, "Good. You know, if you take me to them, they'll hurt me..."
"I won't let them." He says as he pushes in closer to you. "You're mine." His authoritative tone sends goosebumps down your spine. He has no doubt, no shyness as he stakes his claim.
"Did they say when you have to take me to them? Exactly when?"
He shakes his head again as his hand moves up to cup one of your breasts. You moan in response. "So you can take me tomorrow, right?" He only nods in reply before he places kisses down your throat. Your voice is husky as you continue, "Let me make you feel good Winter."
When he pulls back you point to the couch next to the door that has somehow remained intact. He pulls you with him as he sits on the couch, pulling you down so you straddle him. "Just relax, handsome. Let me make you feel good."
His eyes are almost completely black as you lean down and lick his throat, placing small nips before kissing them better. You can feel how hard he is beneath you as he holds your waist and grinds you down on him. You meet his lips again, sucking on his lower lip as you pull his hair softly, making him moan in arousal.
Pushing down your hips, you rub your core on his hard bulge, eyes widening when you feel him grow even bigger beneath you. You pull his hair to the side, making him turn his face away from the door as you kiss down his exposed neck, dipping your tongue in the hollow of his collarbone, making him shiver. His arms wrap around your back, holding you to him as he thrusts up into your clothed core, looking for relief the Winter Soldier hasn't felt before. You scratch your nails down his back softly, whining as his bulge hits your clit.
Through a haze of desire, you hear Wanda's voice in your head, telling you she's ready. You release your hold on Winter's hair as you run your hand down his chest before cupping his hardness in your hand, making him growl with need as he pushes into your hand. "That's it kitten. Shit... after I cum in your hand, I'm going to make you scream with my cock," Winter whispers in your ear, making you even wetter.
Your need to get Bucky back conflicts with your rising desire, but when you see Wanda in the corner of your eye, you know what you have to do. You kiss Winter hard, fighting your tongue with his before you pull back. You cup him hard, making him moan in pleasure before you grasp the syringe Wanda floats to you and inject the tranquillizer into his exposed neck, making the Winter Soldier grasp your hips for a second before he passes out.
It takes four men to carry Bucky to his bed. After Steve had hit the alarm, Tony and Bruce had gone searching for Scott and had managed to capture him before he could find a way out of the tower. When they looked through the security tapes, they saw Scott enter the gym and wake a sleeping Bucky before triggering him again. Tony had wanted to place Bucky in a cell, but you and Steve had managed to convince him that everyone would be safer if the rest of the tower couldn't get to him.
Steve had his broken arm set in a cast during that time and was now napping on the couch in Bucky's lounge area while you slept next to the sleeping soldier. On the cameras, it showed that Bucky had been himself when he woke up after the first time he was triggered, so you had no doubt that he would be himself again soon. The injection Wanda had given you had been made by Bruce and was stronger than anything a normal human could withstand. However, with Bucky's fast metabolism, you had no idea how long he would be out.
Four hours later you wake to Bucky muttering in his sleep a look of terror on his face. He pulls you to him like you are his safety blanket in a world gone crazy.
"No, no!" He shouts, his body shaking.
You try to wake him up softly, knowing how vulnerable you feel when you have a nightmare. Steve is in the doorway, seeing if you need assistance when Bucky's eyes shoot open and he releases his hold on you. His gaze is distant before he realises where he is. He glances at Steve before he groans and pinches his nose, lying on his back in the bed.
"Please tell me it was just a bad dream," he asks, eyes focused on the ceiling.
"Afraid not, punk," Steve says from the door.
Bucky sighs before he sits up, facing the two of you. His eyes scan your body before he moves to Steve and flinches at his cast. "Steve, I'm so sorry. Who else did I hurt?" He turns to you before he continues, "Are you alright doll?"
"I'm ok, Bucky. He didn't really hurt me..." You grasp his metal hand in comfort.
"I'm afraid you're going to have to be extra nice to Sam, he took the brunt of the soldier's attack. He has two broken ribs and a dislocated shoulder. He's got a bruised larynx from your vibranium arm too. He's in the cradle now, Dr. Cho says he should be out in 30 minutes. Wanda is under observation with a concussion."
Bucky's shoulders tense as he tries to process everything. "Fuck," he whispers to himself harshly, pinching the bridge of his nose before he faces Steve once again, "I'm so sorry, Stevie."
"It wasn't you Buck. Wanda managed to contain you the first time. If it wasn't for Scott betraying us, this would never have happened again." Steve smiles down at you as you move closer to Bucky, wrapping your arms around his side before he picks you up and puts you in his lap. "I'll tell the others your back, Buck. I'm going to go sit with Sam, when you guys are caught up feel free to join me." He waves in greeting as he departs.
"I'm so sorry, kitten. I never wanted you to see me that way. I never wanted you to meet him." He pulls you to his chest, kissing you softly.
"It's ok, Bucky. He didn't really hurt me."
"Thank God for - wait," he pulls back and stares down at you, "I didn't really hurt you? So I did hurt you a bit?"
"I..." you want to spare him any more bad news but you know you can't lie to him. "When I injected him... he just gripped my hips a bit. Nothing major, I promise Bucky. I just have a bruise or two."
He leans his forehead against yours softly. "I'm so sorry doll. I'm so sorry for hurting you... and I'm so sorry that I forced you to... distract me in that way. I know after everything you've been through, being forced to play that role again must have been terrible. You must hate me now."
"What? No Bucky. You didn't force me into anything. I wanted to help you, I just wish that I didn't have to hurt you." You hold his face and lean in close. Blue eyes full of sorrow meet yours hesitantly. "I love you Bucky, and Winter is a part of you. There's no piece of you that I could ever hate."
Bucky's eyes widen in response as he grabs your waist once again. "Please, please... Say that again," he stares at you intensely, watching the expression on your face.
You giggle softly as you wrap your hands around his neck. "I love you Bucky, I love you so much!"
His lips descend on yours, his kiss deep and demanding as he deepens the kiss, holding you to him. You run your fingers through his hair as you return the kiss.
Just when you feel you can't breathe anymore he pulls back. "I love you Y/N. God, I love you so fucking much. I'll rip the world to shreds to keep you safe if I have to."
This time you pull him closer, clutching at his hair and pulling him down to you, kissing him with everything you have. Reluctantly the two of you part, knowing you have to visit Sam before the night is through.
Bucky's flesh hand trembles as he enters the medical wing in the Tower, nervous at having to face the others. You grab his hand between the two of yours, doing your best to help him relax with a quick squeeze. With a quick smile in your direction, Bucky takes a deep breath before he faces Sam and Wanda.
"I'm so sorry you two," Bucky says as he faces the two of them. Sam is pale as he lies in a hospital bed, with Wanda and Steve in the seats next to him. Wanda has a huge bump on her head and seems exhausted.
"Wanda, I-" Bucky starts to say but Wanda surprises him and runs to him to give him a hug.
"You are not to blame for what he does, ok? I know how awful you feel, but we all know it wasn't you Bucky," Wanda says as she pulls back after a few seconds.
When Bucky starts to argue, she interrupts him once again. "I don't want to hear any apologies, Sergeant. Even Sam agrees with me, right Sam?"
Wanda moves to Sam's side once again, waiting for him to answer.
"She's right you know, B. Even when the soldier was kicking my ass, I could see in his eyes that it wasn't you. The two of you are like opposites. He even fights more with his left arm while you usually prefer your dominant right side. He's like the evil mirror version of you." Sam's voice is hoarse and soft as he speaks, his throat still sensitive from being strangled half to death.
You and Bucky move closer to Sam. "I'm still so sorry Sam. You almost died."
"You don't need to apologise, Bucky. We're a family, and family sticks together right?" Sam's words cause Bucky's eyes to widen, they're shiny before he blinks away the unshed tears. The thought of Sam forgiving him so easily is difficult to accept but is also a huge relief.
"Yeah, Sam. Family sticks together." He glances at Steve and Wanda, "Till the end of the line," he whispers. He pulls you close as he kisses the top of your head, his smile beaming as he understands what it's like to have people care for him for the first time in seventy years.
