Fact of the matter is that if reputation (the album) had been released by a male artist it would be considered an emotionally-complex album that deals with the themes of betrayal, grief of losing one’s innocence, finding love and learning to trust someone while also being doubtful, the coexistence of love and fear, and finding acceptance and understanding while simultaneously feeling misunderstood. It wouldn’t be labeled as a ‘petty’ and ‘defensive’ body of work that talks about issues which could’ve been avoided. Making mistakes can’t be avoided by human beings. But for critics, human beings equates to male artists exclusively. And you all know that you can’t deny this.
