Charlotte Louise Bridges Forten Grimké (August 17, 1837 – July 23, 1914) was an African American anti-slavery activist, poet, and educator. She grew up in a prominent #abolitionist family in Philadelphia. She taught school for years, including during the Civil War, to freedmen in South Carolina.
Her diaries written before the end of the Civil War have been published in numerous editions in the 20th century and are significant as a rare record of the life of a free black woman in the antebellum North. via Wikipedia

It was my pleasure to portray Miss Charlotte Forten (Grimké) during the tea given in her honor. On October 31st we celebrated the arrival of Ms. Forten to St Helena Island to serve as the first Negro teacher at the Penn School. Ms. Forten, who later married Rev. Francis Grimké of Charleston and nephew of the abolitionists Grimké sisters, arrived the last week of October 1862. What a tremendous accomplishment it was for a young Black, female teacher filled with gumption to influence the lives of her students. Her journals and articles submitted to abolitionist newspapers have given us a taste of what it was like for her, a privileged free woman, to enter the Deep South and experience the difficulties of the newly freed, though referred to as contraband, Negro people on St. Helena Island. Amidst the Union Army, northern abolitionists, while the Confederate Army was still active in the area and threatened their safety. The adventures of Ms. Forten and the other teachers, Ellen Murray and Laura Towne are are a must read for history buffs. Our youth portrayed local Gullah historical figures that evening, a scavenger hunt was held, the drummers and dancers perform and treats were available for all to enjoy! #penncenter1862 #sthelenaislandsc #gullahgeechee #gullahculture #culture #history #charlotteforten #charlottefortengrimke #charlottefortengrimké #ancestors #reinactment (at Saint Helena Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4d2cawAktC/?igshid=1jtfn4opupy2y
