'Believe it or not, fantastical Doctor Who episode The Giggle actually has some basis in real history – well, up to a point...

The third and last of the show's 60th anniversary specials opens in Soho, 1925, where Charles Banerjee (played by Charlie de Melo) is unwittingly stepping inside the domain of the Toymaker (Neil Patrick Harris).

The visitor is looking for a test subject and selects Stooky Bill, a puppet, despite the Toymaker's protestations that he's separating Bill from his 'wife' Stooky Sue and their 'babies'.

Banerjee, we discover, is in the employ of one John Logie Baird (John Mackay, who played the same role in Russell T Davies' ITV drama Nolly), who is on the cusp of inventing television. Using the head of the dummy, the Scottish engineer is successful in his efforts to transmit a televised image between rooms in his laboratory at 22 Frith Street, London.

Of course, little does Baird suspect that his work has been corrupted by the Toymaker – oblivious, Baird is hailed as a genius and pioneer, with the end results of the Toymaker's work only making themselves apparent almost a century later, in 2023.

Though the real Baird didn't source his test subject from an omnipotent, extra-dimensional being – at least as far as we know – Stooky Bill did in fact exist...

Baird first devised a basic television system in 1924 – it used a spinning disk with 30 lenses to send moving pictures as electrical signals. The lenses picked up light from an object, and a device changed this into an electrical signal sent by radio waves. At the receiving end, a similar spinning disk with a light recreated the image of the object.

Baird's system was not able to televise human faces, because they had inadequate contrast, so he used the head of a ventriloquist's dummy – nicknamed "Stooky Bill" – whose brightly painted face had greater contrast. The lights illuminating the subject also generated so much heat that Baird couldn't use a human for testing – as seen in The Giggle, Stooky Bill's painted face eventually became cracked by the heat.

The puppet's unusual nickname came from Scots vernacular, with "stooky" or "stookie" being another word for plaster-cast and also being used to refer to a foolish person.

Doctor Who portrays Bill as having a 'family', but there is no evidence that Stooky Sue and the babies ever existed in reality – although Baird did use another male dummy, named "James", in his experiments.

John Logie Baird began giving public demonstrations of television in 1925 and 1926, even demonstrating the world's first colour transmission in 1928. A year later, in 1929, his company Baird Television Development Company Ltd. made the first television programmes officially transmitted by the BBC.

Baird died, aged 57, on 14th June 1946 – a blue plaque marking his first demonstration of television sits at 22 Frith Street, Westminster, London.'

Bc on surface level sure, these 2 people have been longing to be together since they were forced apart via Heather being murdered so surrrrellly this is the ‘fix-all’…but I mean… their relationship is not going to be as they remember it for many reasons:

1: Both of them are guilty of wearing rose-tinted glasses, their relationship was undoubtedly not as picturesque and wholesome as it’s made out to have been.

They were BOTH overworked doctors; [so overworked that when Heather thinks of herself she sees herself in her doctor’s uniform (as evidenced by the fact her ghost is wearing it), and also of course by the fact she misdiagnosed Charlie’s meningitis.] Due to this, I’d say it’d be reasonable to suggest that Heather might have spent more time haunting Neelam in her afterlife than she spent with her during their life.

☕️🫖The only detail Heather mentions about her life with Neelam (correct me if I’m wrong) that suggests an activity they did together was when Heather mentions brewing tea for Neelam in an ugly teapot the woman loved. As far as activities go, drinking hot drinks together-although enjoyable- doesn’t imply a lot of time or effort.

Additionally, the fact that Heather drinks coffee, not tea, suggests that they may not have even been drinking together, it could have just been a nice gesture for Heather to make her girlfriend tea as they pull yet another all-nighter at the hospital. ☕️ 🫖

Also, Heather’s appearance implies that she didn’t even have time to properly look after herself during life, let alone to spend quality time with her lover, “messy plait … wrinkled shirt” [page 9 of ‘sixteen souls’]

Further evidence of Heather+Neelam’s relationship being idealised is that both Heather and Neelam are known to avoid harsh reality in favour of digestible delusions. For Neelam, she’d prefer to turn to the unfounded “insight” fake psychic (Claire Cole) to deal with her girlfriend’s untimely demise than to seek the help of a therapist who might help her to move on. For Heather, she hides harsh truths until the last moment. It’s as if Heather thinks that if she doesn’t audibly acknowledge the truth then she can continue pretending as if it weren’t true/wasn’t the case (e.g, her hiding the fact that she is tethered to Neelam rather than the hospital. Also, in book 1, Heather hiding the fact that it was her who misdiagnosed Charlie).

What if it’s not love but guilt which keeps Heather tethered to Neelam? I think Heather did love Neelam but it’s the aspect of guilt (over not spending enough quality time with her,perhaps?) which keeps her tethered to her. It’s been a while since I read book 1 ‘sixteen souls’ but from what I recall, it’s some form of negative emotion (such as regret +/or guilt) which tethers ghosts to people or places.

Post-canon, once dead!Heather and alive!Neelam are back together it’s going to be CREEPY for Neelam to view+hear her gf all distorted through the crypto-lenses. +having the knowledge that that thing which looks like+sounds like her gf but is off has been sharing a bed with her for the past 7 years..? Absolute nightmare material. …..also just imagine what Neelam’s friends or family would think of Neelam ever let slip that she was dating her long-dead girlfriend again…??

Ik I must sound really critical so just gonna state that I love Heather+Neelam’s relationship AND especially the potential for angst it has✨💯 :’D

One of my favourite parts of the sixteen souls series (by Rosie Talbot) is seeing the reactions of random side characters witnessing the main characters in the depth of invisible troubles.

Like that scene (in 12 bones) when Sam+his mum r having this really dramatic+emotional fight in the hotel lobby which, to the employees must have sounded INSANE bc imagine ur just doing ur job +overhear a convo that goes something like this

Sam’s mum: Your father is ‼️BEYOND THE VEIL‼️, dear, that 🔮nice psychic woman🔮 told me about it, he is CALLING to us and we must ⚡️listen⚡️ 🗣️

Sam: No, mum, he isn’t talking, he’s dead.😔.

Sam’s mum: Don’t be dense, darling, I paid £1000 for this knowledge 🙄

Bc at the start the hotel staff probably felt really bad for Sam- I mean the guy is full-on living in that hotel , it’s clear he doesn’t have a stable home. And of course overhearing his conversation with his mother they’d feel even worse. But. Then Sam pulls shit like asking for as much salt as the hotel HAS and they conclude that nobody in that family is Normal. Imagine going to clean a room+ finding a SALT CIRCLE on the ground+ a bunch of glyphs drawn in various notebooks- I’m very very curious as to what conclusions the hotel staff drew about the Harrow family 🤔… especially after the news report about the incident at the psychic show in the theatre…😬😀

Dean Winchester and Alana Harris

Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) is 37 and works at his dad's garage, he loves his family and friends. Home is Lawrence, Kansas born and raised with his parents John and Mary and brother Sam. He’s only ever been in love once and she broke his heart, now guarded and finds it hard to fall in love again, which is why he only has one night stands. He loves Led Zeppelin, pie, whiskey, his car and he’s Alana’s neighbour.

Alana Harris (Ana De Armas) is 32, an editor at the local newspaper, she loves her friends and family. She’s from a small village called Aston Abbots, Buckinghamshire in the UK. She moved to Lawrence 3 years ago for her job, but also to get away from her past. She has been in love a couple of times, one ripped her heart out and another broke it in two, but she hasn’t let that stop her from finding the one. She didn’t know what she would do with out her best friend Lola and neighbour Dean.

John and Mary Winchester

They have been together almost 40 years, both will do anything for their family. John (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is a mechanic, Mary (Samantha Smith) is a nurse both born and raised in Lawrence, Kansas where they brought up their two young boys who they dote on. John is an ex-marine, Mary knows this plays a part in why their boys are so disciplined.

Sam and Jessica Winchester

The two met at university, married a few years later and had a couple of kids. Jessica (Adrianne Lee Palicki) doesn’t get on with her family, but Sam’s (Jared Padalecki) took her in as one of their own. She works with Mary and Sam is a hot shot lawyer.

Lola and Mick Price

Lola (Joanna Todd) is 39, married to Mick with 3 kids, but she never let that stop her in her career at the local newspaper where she met Alana.

Mick (Richard Armitage) is a successful business man at Atkins Enterprise. The three of them get on really well because neither Lola or Alana have a filter making Mick cringe sometimes. Lola has been Alana’s rock.

Cas Bradbury and Naomi Smith

Cas (Misha Collins) and Naomi (Logan Browning) met when Cas brought the bar Jack’s, he was looking for staff and she was looking for a job. It wasn’t look before they switched from boss and employee to boyfriend and girlfriend. Now they run the bar together.

Charlie and Jack Bradbury

Charlie (Felicia Day) is 31 she grew up next door to Sam and Dean with her brothers Jack and Cas. She is a games designer, the boys have treated her like a little sister. She has a big heart and is warm with everyone unless you cross her.

Jack (Alexander Calvert) is the youngest of three and got away with a lot when he was younger. He's followed in his sister footstep and doing graphic design at University.

Louie and Isaac Frith

Louie (Brian Conley) is Alana's boss. Alana is one of his favourite employees, he saw a spark in her when she started LDN (Lawrence Daily News). She reminded her of his daughter who died aged 22 in a car crash, Isaac his nephew was in the car too but survived. He thought the worse happened when she died but was proven wrong when he was working out of town and his wife Aubree rang him to say there was a guy stalking the house. He stayed on the phone as she dialed 911 on her mobile as they waited for the police, the guy broke in and Louie heard her being murdered.

Isaac (Michiel Huisman) was the first guy since Rick, Alana fell head over heels in love with they were due to get married but 4 months into their engagement she found out he had not only slept with a woman but carried on the affair for 6 months. Knowing she could never trust him again she ended their 14 month relationship.

Pete and Veronica Harris

Pete (Daniel Craig) and Ronnie (Veronica) are Alana's parents. Her Dad is a go with the flow kinda guy, he's happy as long as his girls are. He can smell a rat from a mile off, he a good judge of character, so if he doesn't like someone he's quick to let them know.

Ronnie/Veronica (Tracy-Ann Oberman) wants the best for her girls and nothing less. Being a teacher she has a strict no bullshit policy, she blunt and brutal. But once people get to know her, she's a pussy cat. Being a teacher she a pushy person. Which has rubbed Alana and Fifi up the wrong way a few times.

Fifi (Fiona) and Simon Mulvery

Fifi/Fiona (Jenna Coleman) is Alana's older sister by 3 years and she likes to remind her of that alot. The pair are as thick as thieves if you mess with one you mess with another that includes their mother, she was the only one that could see through Rick. Married to the "perfect" husband Simon with 2 kids life couldn't be more perfect.

Simon (Emmett J. Scanlan) is 2 years older than Fifi, he worked with Ronnie for a while at Aylesbury college which is how he met Fifi 16 year ago. On the outside looking in they look like the perfect couple a college teacher and his beautician wife with a 13 year old girl and 10 year old boy but their relationship is far from perfect not that Fifi knows it.

Chloe and Elliot Stanfield

Chloe (Poppy Gilbert) is Alana's best friend in the UK. They are practically sisters, they became inseparable quickly growing up. When Alana moved to the US they spoke every day then life got in the way. Now they speak once a week and visit each other once every three months. Chloe married her childhood sweet heart Elliot.

Elliot (Billy Howle) grow up in the same village with Alana and Chloe. His parents are strict and failure isn't an option to them, he's currently running for MP for the neighbouring town.
