tainted, virgin!reader is growing tired of grinding against her boyfriends. she’s never touched herself before—no toys, no fingers, no fondling—the friction from a pillow used to be enough. but, maybe having something inside of her isn’t as terrifying as she believed. charles’ pretty pianist fingers don’t look too scary, and they way he raves about how talented max’s daunting thicker fingers are; well, she could be convinced to see what all the fuss is about.

12. What’s a headcanon you have for this character?

The majority of the sex he's had in his life has been gay because it was easier to find willingly casual partners and hookups in the gay scene in the 40s, and he canonically had a shitload of casual sex pre-war. He also enjoys the company of gay men more than the straight world, so that's where his closest social circle comes from, at least post-war. All the het sex during the war is yet another way of making do - not because he's not into women but a) he doesn't enjoy leading them on and b) he'd prefer to be having more gay sex than he gets. And c) he canonically doesn't like that the nurses are all military, as he alludes to in The Interview.

I recall seeing a post once that was like 'when would he have the time to have a bunch of gay sex when he dated carlye' but that relationship lasted 2 years at most (took place during a surgical residency which are 2 years) and he's at least 30 by the time he was drafted, he had time to have plenty of sex with other women based on everything about him and how he talks about his love life (eg people assuming he'd end up married to a stripper), and I'll also headcanon that he dove into the gay scene extra hard afterwards to try to get over her.

18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?

Like most of his relationships with the cast, I think he's p great with everyone. Love his professional respect with Charles and early Margaret and compassion with later Margaret, love his friendship with Henry and refusal to treat Henry like a boss, love his older sibling/parental vibe with Radar, love his two bffs, love his animosity towards Frank (very admirable) and his solidarity with Klinger and gentle respect with Mulcahy. Potter's the sole exception in not really liking that relationship, but even there I enjoy aspects, like Hawkeye's protectiveness towards him when he acts like an idiot (The Young and the Restless or Red White Blues).

I think I'll go with his dad though? I love that they have a very positive relationship, Hawkeye is very effusive in discussing his admiration for him and telling him he loves him etc, and it's sweet. Daniel sucks in some ways in how emotionally reticent he is lol, but I love how Hawkeye deals with that and gently scolds him for it.

21. If you’re a fic writer and have written for this character, what’s your favorite thing to do when you’re writing for this character? What’s something you don’t like?

I love writing his point of view because it unlocks Fun Writing where I can describe things in colourful ways with lots of funny metaphors and jokes. I'm a close 3rd person writer so I can't do this if I don't think it fits the character.

I also enjoy his shamelessness and the way he's so open about everything, it makes his reactions to things more unique (at least in the fanfic world where writers often like to default to emotional reticence and insecurity) and interesting imo. If he doesn't like something he will say something, if he wants something he will pursue it unless he has a good reason not to, etc. It's fun to imagine how he reacts to things because of that.

There's not much I don't like about writing him, but it does kind of suck that I have such a solidified sense of characterization for him because it makes it hard to make some premises I'd otherwise really enjoy work in my brain, because I can't imagine Hawkeye behaving how he'd need to for it to work. Eg Hawk/Frank endgame, or Peg/BJ/Hawkeye trainwreck, or post-canon miserable Hawk/BJ relationship. I just think Hawk would have the awareness, experience, and self-respect to hit da bricks, unfortunately.

tl;dr Charles and his story are driving me insane and I love it so much

CHARLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Holy shi-- That scene in the church was SO GOOD, FULL COURSE MEAL, PERFECT BAD-END TYPE OF CONTENT, I GOT TEARS IN MY EYES.

I was ready to murder Vlad if it turned out to JUST be a dream lol (MC's reaction and response at the end were so on point so thank you, girl.) I hadn't completely forgotten that moment two chapters ago between MC and Vlad before she suddenly woke up in the mansion (I am an Ikerev Loki gal, after all, so this isn't my first fake reality rodeo) but the church scene was so good it kind of pushed that moment to the back of my mind.

Because at the same time, I remembered the preview trailer where they showed Charles's CG of him bleeding out in the church while the voice over had him apologizing for his crimes and for being born. I thought this was going to be the moment.

So the MC and I were both in denial that he was dead while she feels his body going cold in her arms :')

And all the while MC is talking about the things Charles wasn't able to experience, like seeing the sunrise over the ocean, and that she needed to keep her promise with him. She asks Le Comte to bring Charles back.

Cue me nodding my head and getting intrigued at the idea of Charles being freed from the Cult of Vlad (affectionate) and getting to live the idle, wealthy lifestyle of one of le Comte's collection.

Except le Comte says he can't, he can't, because he can't sense any desire to live coming from Charles. (And the way le Comte said it breaks my heart because you could tell he regretted being unable to help.)

At last, after trying so hard, Charles had truly and utterly given up on everything. And he did it in the most horribly perfect way: as the God of Death, as a man who had experience executing thousands of people with both axe and guillotine, he killed himself with one perfect strike.

(And while I greatly appreciate the fact Cybird acknowledged his expertise to let him die with such quick precision, insert a hundred more pictures of the crying hamster here because my heart is broken!!!)

Fun fact: between Ikevamp and Ikevil, this is the third route in a row that I've read that has dealt with a suicidal Love Interest (which, hello, Cybird, that is a wild stat??? why do you have so many LI like this??) At this point in the story, however, I feel like Charles has the route that has best handled the topic in a narrative-rich and nuanced way.

Charles is so incredibly tragic and real that he's looking for hope to the point of endangering himself. He's sweet and funny and wildly friendly. He's also drowning in his tragedy and so he clings to people who might save him, such as Vlad, someone he even calls a God, someone who promises him a better world, a world where he doesn't have to experience the things that hurt him, a world where he can be happy and loved and accepted. I was thoroughly entranced in the scene where MC gets kidnapped (at last lol) and she sees how easily Charles defaults his will away to Vlad. Even though Charles asks questions several times which show his hesitancy and doubts, it becomes clear he isn't seeking truth. What he really wants are reassurances that this is right, that this is OK, that he's not making a mistake.

(He is an executioner through and through: someone else makes the choice for him. It's not his place to judge or decide.)

But in this way, Charles is just so wildly victim-coded to me in that I can clearly see him accepting abuse if it were called by any other name. When he speaks of his house calls, when he offers to let MC do anything--anything!--she wants to him, when we witness the group of men he lets beat him up (because he could have kept his truth without letting them abuse him), I dread to think what violence has been done to him in the dark streets of Paris that he has accepted in the past under the guise of the word love.

So the fact chapter 22 and 23 showed Charles realizing the solution to all his moral and ethical and emotional turmoil is to stop struggling and die, and that the story actually lets him succeed--albeit in a "highly possible future" scenario that Vlad reinforces will surely come to pass again at some point--hurt me in the best kind of way and I'm looking forward to how this route ends.

But Charles's highly probable suicide also brings up the question of why did Vlad pick Charles, of all people, to bring back as a vampire? Was Charles simply an ideal follower? Because the the key promise Vlad makes with Charles seems to make Charles somewhat useless for his plans: Charles won't have to kill anyone. What use is a perfect executioner who refuses to raise the sword?

The dynamic of Vlad, Faust, and Charles is wonderful though and I hope Vlad gives us a straight answer for the reason of his original experiment of MC teaching Charles love.

4 . what’s your favorite line?

Ooo well. I can't just pick one obviously. Like my favorite comedic lines are probably “I’ve had it with you fruitcakes” from Flagg, and then “no straight man in this damn army” from The Late Captain Pierce. I also love BJ’s “you’re loved, you fool” to Klinger, and I adore Mulcahy’s line in The Interview about the doctors warming themselves from the steam of the cut open bodies (it’s just a well written line what can I say). I don’t know, I don’t think I can really pick, it'd honestly be easier to pick a favorite line from each episode.

Am I allowed to say gfa lol. I think I’d also go with Dr. Pierce and Mr. Hyde, The Interview, The More I See You, and Abyssinia, Henry.

I love love his nurse cape and the lesbian bandanna as separate accessories. As for whole outfits tho?

23 . a storyline you wish they’d gone a little deeper on?

I would’ve really loved to see more Charles and Honoria interactions, expand that relationship a little. Oh actually! I also would’ve loved to see more of Helen Whitfield and her time at the 4077, given that they said she had been there for a while. It would’ve been nice to see that relationship between her and Margaret. I think I saw someone mention that Helen and Margaret could’ve been like Hawkeye and BJ in the camp, and I really want to see that.

Guys, I have the craziest news for you.

So I have been planning a trip to Italy for two weeks in the spring. For those of you who don’t know, I have two degrees in the History of Art specializing in Florence during the Italian Renaissance - same as Kate (by chance, I didn't get two degrees just because Kate had them lol). I’ve been studying Italian art for almost 10 years - it’s about time I make my first trip to Italy. 

I have an $800 flight credit from Delta Airlines due to a crazy flight delay from Ohio over the summer. The credit expires on 10/23, so I only have a few days left to book, but I couldn’t settle on dates, and I was starting to freak out a little bit because the deadline is so close. I knew I wanted mid/late April or early May, though, but I just couldn’t pick.

I work on an international team out of New York, so I have professional contacts all over the world. Someone I work with out of Europe suggested that I fly to London and work out of our London office for a week. I’ve been twice but never long enough to do it properly, touristy things and just exploring, and the time difference between NY working hours and London working hours works very well in my favor such that I could do my regular job from London, have plenty of time to explore, make a weekend pit stop in Paris, and then take the two weeks off for Italy. 

I got authorization to work out of London this week so that’s definitely ready to go. I just couldn’t settle on dates. Last weekend, I almost booked my flights for 4/9-4/29. Not for any reason, just because it seemed like it fit just fine in my range of options. 

I’m glad I didn’t, because this week, Buckingham Palace announced the date of the coronation… Saturday, May 6th, 2023. The first weekend in May. Right in the mix of dates during which I was thinking of traveling. I didn’t have a set date, so I was flexible on that 4/9-4/29 range.

Long story short, I’ve been planning to go to the coronation when the time came for almost 10 years. And, by pure coincidence… I’ll be in London. No separate trip required. I’ll be in London for the coronation. Can you believe it? I’m actually going to the coronation!

Booking flights this weekend. 4/29-5/20 in Europe. Through the morning of 5/7 in London. I’ll need recommendations of where to stay, what to do, how and where to explore during that first week before I GO TO KING CHARLES’ CORONATION. Can you believe it? Can you BELIEVE IT? By pure coincidence! I’ll be there! I’d always planned on being there, and now, I’m ACTUALLY going to be there, and I didn’t even have to plan a trip around it! It fell right into my lap!

King Charles Intends On Keeping Prince William & Prince Harry Apart To 'Protect The Dignity Of An Occasion' At Coronation, Source Claims (msn.com)

I find this headline aggravating. Makes me indignant.

AT WHAT POINT HAS WILLIAM DISPLAYED A LACK OF DIGNITY? When has he ever betrayed his family in word/thought/deed, denigrated his grandparents, publicly trashed Camilla in a tell-all tome, had stories surface repeatedly questioning his treatment of women, admitted to years of personal drug use/abuse, married a grifter and foisted off kids whose origins he deliberately kept veiled then demanded their titled inclusion in the Line of Succession Top 10?

I can relate some of what William has done. His life and words honor and support the British monarchy and his birth family. He faced his misgivings about being the heir and set his mind/heart/will to overcoming traits and foibles from childhood that could have diminished his character and future reign if left unchecked. He has a love for truth. He married a 10, a woman who may one day as a Queen rival his grandmother in soft diplomacy and outshine her in grace and poise (for which QEII would be prouder than anyone). He and his 10-wife produced three wonderful children who they manage to share with the public just enough to endear them to the British people while allowing them sufficient privacy to develop their own personalities and gifts.

I posted in January this year my thoughts on the essence of who Harry is so there's no since repeating. For years he chose a hedonistic lifestyle fraught with chemical substances and continuous therapy over the tough task of facing consequences, taking responsibility and doing the hard work to become stronger through overcoming weakness.

What we have here is an imbalance of the highest order, and not the one Harry would have us think: not the heir with everything and the 'spare' with a less desirable bedroom. It's an imbalance exacerbated by a serious lack of leadership. The monarch needs to rule and take care of business with the son who is out to destroy British freedoms and the monarchy as Britons know it.

THERE IS NO EQUIVALENCY BETWEEN THE TWO SONS. William outshines Harry every day of the week in every way, and it has nothing to do with his being the heir or smarter. It is because he's done the work, taken some responsibility, made good key life choices. Shown genuine thought and compassion for others. He surely deserves better than being equated with his traitorous wastrel of a brother.

Separate William from Harry by all means, but not because he'll behave without dignity in public like a couple of two-year-olds fighting in the front church pew. What happened to elevating him above all other royal dukes and princes at the coronation? He won't demand it, which is all the more reason he bloody well deserves it (to paraphrase a Brit).

19. how do you keep yourself motivated?

you know, it's honestly not that hard for me because of the way i balance it? i work on school stuff a lot. so much that i will always need a break. this is that break.

20. how many WIPs and story ideas do you have?

two mini series that i would love to update if i ever had the time. i also kick around ideas about elenore from time to time. i've been thinking about whether she stays a lawyer, whether she stays married to sean despite really loving him, etc. i think the answer is yes to both, especially the sean thing. but i kick stuff around just to see what might work and what would not.

21. who is/are your favourite character(s) to write?

lucy and sam. i don't know how many different ways i can say it, lol. they're the characters that feel the most me to me. i love being able to be both of them. i think lucy is who i really am, and sam is the character i play in front of people i don't know that well (e.g. students). either way, they're both very real parts of me, and i love them. but like, you know i love will and sadie, too. so those original four are always going to be my favorites to write about, but i have an even more special place for lucy and sam.

22. who is/are your favourite pairing(s) to write?

i'm going to be difficult and answer this question in a few ways, lmao.

my favorite canon endgame romantic relationship is obviously lucy and will. god. they love each other so much. it's unreal. he is devoted to her, and she is devoted to him. they like each other. they understand each other. they grow up together in a way that the other pairings do not, and i think that makes them so much stronger. like, yeah, sadie and daniel were kids together, and they'll always have that frame of reference. but lucy and will catapulted into adulthood at age sixteen together, and no one will ever quite understand that time like they do. they're bonded by mutual admiration, trust, and unique circumstances. i love that they're a given for each other, but neither of them ever takes the other for granted.

my favorite canon non-endgame romantic relationship is sam and carrie. i don't count sam and steph because even though they weren't technically together at the time of sam's death, i think it's either strongly implied or just outright stated that they were headed there. but oh, sam and carrie. what could have been! like lucy and will, i think they get each other in ways that no one else can really broach. sam understands carrie's quirks and the creativity that rattles awkwardly inside her mind. he wants to help her let it out, while charlie is too often oblivious to the fact that it's there. and carrie can see through to sam's silent emotions, see through his jokes, his song-and-dance numbers. sam is so easy to pair with all sorts of characters. i can't deny that. but there is a large part of me that thinks, even with steph in the picture, sam should have ended up with carrie. steph can still end up with katie! but sam and carrie should have been forever.

and my favorite non-canon romantic relationship, which could have happened in a very different world where very different things occurred, is lucy and sam. i think, in a world where neither of them ever knew will, or will had never been born, this would have been a great partnership. their personalities just sing to each other, imo. she is the seriousness to his silliness, but they are both so brilliant, so witty, so cool. these two very unusual, very glittery people could have been a great team. in their reality, they have no romantic or sexual tension whatsoever, as they're both busy being obsessed with will (💜). but they could have been together in another world.

idk, lol ... jane austen, charlotte brontë, virginia woolf, charles dickens, chinua achebe, some works by jerry spinelli (really just stargirl and its sequel), katherine mansfield ... it could go on.

i mean, broadly, realistic fiction with an emphasis on youth and coming-of-age. and you know what i mean by that: not necessarily school dances and first crushes, not necessarily high school stuff. but just a young person navigating a difficult situation.
