You might have come across the ‘SME’ acronym while researching or looking for jobs and internship opportunities, but what exactly does it mean? And why are SMEs a great place to start for students and graduates?

What is an SME?

The acronym SME stands for ‘small and medium enterprise’. It essentially means any organisation that has less than 250 employees, which as of 2019 accounts for over 99% of organisations in the UK (or over 5.9 million!).

Why are they a great place to look for opportunities?

As teams are smaller, people working for SMEs often hold multiple responsibilities and gain a range of experiences. This is great for people first starting out in an industry, as it allows them to develop a wide range of skills.

Unlike larger organisations, who often recruit graduates at particular points throughout the year, SMEs recruit all year round. Furthermore, the recruitment processes tend to be shorter at SMEs and start dates are often more flexible.

Whereas recruitment processes at larger organisations often place a large focus on academic achievements, SMEs often place an emphasis on skills, experiences and attitudes.

Looking for opportunities

The variety of opportunities means there are a variety of ways by which you can find roles at SMEs.

Online vacancies – Some SMEs will advertise their jobs online. Popular job sites include Total Jobs, Monster and Indeed, but there are many more! There are also sector specific sites, such as CharityJob for jobs in the third sector.

Networking – Many people find jobs at SMEs through existing contacts. Contacts can be built through networking, both in person and online. You can network in person by attending industry-specific events (like our Careers and Enterprise events) or online using social media platforms such as Linkedin.

Speculative applications –  Even if no jobs are being advertised, you can always reach out to SMEs directly to find out if there are any potential opportunities coming up. Speculative applications are more effective if you have been in contact with the organisation before, and if the organisation is relevant to your existing skills and interests.

Our venues fundraisers typically work between 10am and 6pm and are usually employed on a 40 hour per week contract working 5 days per week, including alternate Saturdays. Our venues are often busiest first thing in the morning, over lunchtime and later in the afternoon, so our Fundraisers must be flexible in the hours they work and demonstrate commitment to reaching their donor targets each week.  

All our fundraisers are on permanent employment contracts, providing the security of regular income as well as amazing benefits including health cash plan, death in service plan, shopping discounts and a personal pension! Our fundraisers are paid a basic wage, plus discretionary bonuses, which relate to the number and quality of donors they achieve.  

All uniform, equipment and materials are provided - including an electronic tablet to take donations. Fundraisers are entitled to 28 days holiday which includes bank holiday allowance. Accommodation will be provided if staying away (if the venue is over 75 miles from home) plus a contribution towards travel expenses.
