the thing about link click is that despite all the time travel and other action-focused stuff, everything is ddriven by love. platonic love, romantic love, familial love (both biological and not). and cheng xiaoshi is the centre of all of it.
emma's fate was all because she loved her family. the noodle ladies found each other again because they loved each other. chen xiao loved so much - his team, the girl, his mother. liu siwen fought every year to be with his true love. doudou's family hung onto hope because they loved their son. xu shanshan and dong yi were an adorable college romance. li tianchen and li tianxi did everything because they loved each other. chen bin loves his wife and unborn child dearly. qiao ling and cheng xiaoshi protect each other because of love. lu guang is doing what he does because of love.
and at the heart of all this is cheng xiaoshi. he tries to convince emma to live. he delivered chen xiao's heartfelt messages. he brought doudou back. he granted chen bin a little more happiness etc etc. none of link click would happen without cheng xiaoshi as the main character, because nobody has as big of a heart as him, and nobody else can shoulder the weight of so much love on their hands
and that is what dooms him in the end
#ughh link click you are SICK i hate you so much#smth smth when you are crushed under the love you hold.. doomed by the narrative...#link click#link click spoilers#cheng xiaoshi

In fact, he was rough but kind, and treated people with sincerity. Unfortunately, fate played a cruel joke on him and his mother died.

Chen Dawang. At the age of 38, we meet the leader of Guigu in Huishan. Twenty years ago, he was a major general in the Loyal and Brave Army led by Chen Weishan. Sizhou. 24 years old, a descendant of the Loyal and Brave Army, he was a martial arts expert but became blind in two days. Because he was indebted to the Lord of Qingyuan, he stayed by his side and waited for investigation. While helping Li Jianwei to get his revenge, he also hoped to find out the truth of the old case of the Loyal and Brave Army from 20 years ago.
Wan Qianhong. Thirty-eight years old, owner of Baihua Villa, with mysterious martial arts and deceitful tricks. When she was young, she fell in love with Li Pu, who concealed his identity. Later, Li Xifei and Huang Jueda broke off all ties with Wan Qianhong. Since then, Wan Qianhong deeply hated Li Pu and all men in the world. Behind the hatred, Wan Qianhong missed her daughter so much that she mistakenly recognized Xiao Hetao as Zaotian's daughter. In the end, they ended up loving each other but not being able to be together.
Shi Tou. Eighteen years old, a good martial brother of Chen Xiaoxi, grew up in Jianweishan. He is the beloved son of Uncle Hua and Aunt Hua, with a simple and straightforward personality. He was happy and naive until Xiaohe died. The joy he did not even have time to express became the biggest regret in Shi Tou's life.

Let's Talk About PingXie: Part 5
A Summary of Common Misconceptions in the Original Work of Daomu Biji
Source: MuzzledIdealist
Please note that this is a repost with an edited MTL. The original text is written by MuzzledIdealist on Weibo. They said it's okay to repost as long as the source is indicated.
It's not entirely about PingXie though, but the original writer put "PingXie" tag for some reason, so I just follow along.
This post is about some misconceptions in Daomu Biji fandom and whether they're canon or not. Daomu Biji is an old and long series, its story has yet to be completed, there are also many theories that are written by the fans, and those may confuse the people who just joined the fandom. So, this post will explain the following topics:
The timeline of Three Days of Silence
Zhang Qiling was imprisoned in a sanatorium by Zhang Qishan for 20 years
Wu Xie and Xie Yuchen were childhood sweethearts, and whether Xie Yuchen said he would marry Wu Xie when he was a child (and vice versa)
Wu Xie owes Xie Yuchen 30 billion and whether the debt has been paid off
Whether Zhang Qiling ever studied abroad with Hei Xiazi in Germany
Whether there is something like "wake up and go home" between Li Cu and Wu Xie
©Divider by @saradika-graphics
Part 1
Someone asked me when the Three Days of Silence happened, which brought back painful memories of my previous attempts to sort out the timeline related to brother and sister-in-law (PingXie)... I still remember that I spent several nights writing a few pages of word documents, but in the end I found that this is fruitless...
Xu Lei has dug so many holes that he can’t even remember what he has written. There are still many discrepancies between his online serialized version and the physical book version. The most obvious thing is that the front part of the earliest serialized version of Tibetan Sea Flower is very different from the physical book.
According to the (online) serialized version, the first time he (Xiaoge) entered Medog (Motuo) to meet Deren was probably in the late 1970s, and the second time he went to Medog to investigate Dong Can’s whereabouts was probably in the late 1980s. However, in the physical book it was changed to the late 1940s when the first time he (Xiaoge) went to Medog to see Deren, and the second time he went to see Dong Can was in the late 1950s. In the (online) serialized version, Chen Xuehan met a man [they used “哥” here, since Xiaoge is often just called "哥" too, I'm not sure who are they referring to, a man named "Zaji" or Xiaoge] in Jila Temple, but this plot was deleted in the physical version, and even the important character "Zaji" was deleted [see more in Tibetan Sea Flower Ch. 4 (MereBear's Translation)]. Judging from the expression of the two versions, the physical book may have deleted some things, resulting in part of the narrative not being as readable as the (online) serialized version. Looking at the timeline, the time in the (online) serialized version is more consistent with the timeline in the follow-up Unknown Story: Queen of the West’s Ghost Banquet, which states: "(Xiao)ge went to Medog in the late 1970s and left Medog just a few days after Wu Xie was born." [See more in Unknown Story: Queen of the West’s Ghost Banquet Part 2 | Part 3 (MereBear's Translation)]
Therefore, if we speculate according to the (online) serialized version, Three Days of Silence happened in the late 1970s (Zhang Qiling entered Medog for the first time and met Lama Deren, and Wu Xie was born in the same year that Zhang Qiling left Medog). If we speculate according to the physical version, Three Days of Silence happened in the late 1940s (Zhang Qiling entered Medog for the first time and met Lama Deren).
Looking at the timeline of the original story, it's even more confusing. The archaeological team was switched, Xie Jiu(ye)'s plan happened to be destroyed by Panma and others. The plots of the two archaeological expeditions at the Zhang Family's Ancient Building and the two groups of people in Xisha and Heavenly Palace on the Clouds are somewhat confusing. In addition, the key nodes of the timeline involve three versions of narratives by Zhang Qiling, Wu Sanxing, and Chen Wenjin, plus Wu Xie’s speculation in the summary chapter, which makes the timeline even more messy. Even if the physical book comes with a timeline of major events, the description is unclear.
Also, "it", the core that controls everything, involved some unspeakable things in the original serialized version (don't ask about this). In order to avoid this problem in subsequent publications, XL added some random things to Zhang Qishan, which caused great contradictions and divisions in the character and positioning of Zhang Qishan.
As soon as the operation is completed, the imagination and rumors come... Regarding the statement that "Zhang Qiling was imprisoned in a sanatorium by Zhang Qishan for 20 years", I have seen it many times, but the fact is that (Xiao)ge was seriously injured and lost his memory in the largest grave robbery in history in 1965. However, after this incident, a group of people headed by Wu Laogou and Huo Xiangu have been supporting and protecting him. The book states that (Xiao)ge entered a sanatorium at some point later, and was indeed transferred out of the sanatorium in 1985. But the book never mentioned who Zhang Qishan imprisoned, nor did it mention the specific time when he (Xiaoge) entered the sanatorium, but what is certain is that he still appeared in Medog in 1977, so "Zhang Qishan imprisoned people" and "20 years" are both pure imagination......
Part 2
Then there are many other rumors. Here are some common ones and clarifications.
1. Are Wu Xie and Xie Yuchen childhood sweethearts?
False. Wu Xie lived in Hangzhou most of the time when he was a child. Only during the Chinese New Year would he go back to his hometown in Changsha with adults to pay New Year greetings. Only then would he have the opportunity to play with children such as Xie Yuchen and Huo Xiuxiu, who are also juniors. Wu Xie went back to his hometown no more than five times, so he met these juniors no more than five times in total.
“When I was a child, I paid New Year's greetings. I remember that we kids often played together, but Wu Xie, you are not so gregarious, you are introverted, and you are from out of town, so you may not be familiar with me, so you don't remember me.” —Xie Yuchen’s original words in the main story. [See more in Daomu Biji Vol. 7 Ch. 31 (MereBear's Translation) | Ch. 26 (Chinese Version)]
“We came to our ancestral village not to reminisce about the past and celebrate the New Year. In fact, from the time I was born to now, I have never returned to my hometown more than once.” —Wu Xie's narration in the New Year chapter that follows the main story. [See more in Daomu Biji Extra Chinese New Year Special : Ch. 1.1 (MereBear's Translation) | Ch. 1 (Chinese Version)
2. When Xie Yuchen was a child, he said he wanted to marry Wu Xie? (And vice versa)
False. It was Huo Xiuxiu who said she wanted to marry Wu Xie, and at that time they were just children under 10 years old, it's a kid's joke.
"Yes, you even forgot about me.” Huo Xiuxiu said from the side, “You can’t even tell who’s real and who’s fake. You’re worse than this Fatty. It’s so upsetting. I even wanted to marry you when I was a child.” —Huo Xiuxiu's original words in the main story. [See more in Daomu Biji Vol. 7 Ch. 31 (MereBear's Translation) | Ch. 26 (Chinese Version)]
Part 3
3. Wu Xie owes Xie Yuchen 30 billion?
False. The fact is that Iron Triangle made a big fuss at the Crescent Hotel and robbed the Ghost Seal. The reason why they were not held accountable was because Mrs. Huo came forward and asked the Huo family to guarantee them. The reason why the Huo family was willing to provide a guarantee was because they wanted Iron Triangle to join in the operation to capture the Lama. So Wu Xie did owe money, but what he owed was the money from the Crescent Hotel's auction of the Ghost Seal, and this debt was guaranteed by the Huo family. Later, people from the Crescent Hotel came to collect the debt, so they asked Xie Yuchen to find Wu Xie and the others to ask for money.
“This son and I are going grave robbing soon.” Granny Huo patted the pattern and said, “I need your help. If you promise, I’ll make sure you don’t have to worry about Crescent Hotel. And there are other big benefits.” —Daomu Biji Vol. 7 Ch. 31 (MereBear's Translation)
“If I leave Beijing, our two families may fight and give a third party a chance. Beijing’s circle is so chaotic that when you made a scene before, Liuli Sun looked to us for an explanation. And the people at the Crescent Hotel are even more troublesome.” Xiao Hua said. “Your asses haven’t been wiped clean. When the Huos are in turmoil, the debts must be repaid together.” —Daomu Biji Vol. 8 Ch. 4 (MereBear's Translation)
「Xiao Hua looked at our feet and then at our walls. Fatty had put up some hanging paintings, but I didn’t know where he had found them. “Actually, people from Crescent Hotel came to ask me to pass on a message to you,” he said.
I looked at Fatty—I hadn’t heard that name for a long time—and said, “You can tell them that I haven’t been in the business recently. They don’t need to be concerned with me.”
“They’re here to collect the debt,” Xiao Hua said. “Do you still remember that you took something from Crescent Hotel without paying? I was your guarantor at that time and now I’ve come to collect.”」
—Daomu Biji Extra: Some of Wu Xie’s Thoughts (MereBear's Translation)
By the way, where did the 30 billion come from:
30 billion is not cash or an exact number, but the valuation of antiques stored in banks around the world by the Xie family. To put forward these antiques, we need a "special one" that can change the graphics according to the time accurately to the second, and correspond to the corresponding database system of those banks. The seal that “cannot be copied” was once hung around Huo Xiuxiu’s neck in Sand Sea, but was later torn off and thrown into the sewer. "As the water washes away, the seal is poured into the depths of the sewer. After 3 months, when the power of the backup battery is exhausted, the seal will stop changing. The wealth valued at nearly 30 billion will become dead and sealed forever in the bank". In short, this 30 billion has nothing to do with Wu Xie's debt.
4. Wu Xie owes this money and has not paid it back?
False. It had been paid off long ago, and Xiao Hua even mistakenly thought that the things that Fatty put in Wu Xie's house to pay the bills were Wu Xie's property and moved them away, so Wu Xie was so poor during Restart period...
「I thought Fatty had some more valuable things, but he said that all of the good things had been moved to Rain Village. On that stormy night, all those things had been regarded as mine and Xiao Hua took them away to settle the accounts (1). Fatty seemed to have a lifetime of bad luck just for knowing me. He went from getting accidental injuries to losing his whole fortune.
I sighed, pinched my brows, and realized that I had to make some money.」
—Restart Ch. 126 (MereBear's Translation)
Later, Xu Lei also replied in the WeChat comment area that the money owed by Wu Xie had been paid off:
「Selected comment: Wu Xie still owes Xiao Hua the Ghost Seal money and hasn’t paid it back yet. How dare he borrow it again?
Xu Lei: It’s done.」
An additional point here is that the Huo family should use their own family credit as a guarantee for the Iron Triangle, and the amount of debt is huge. The Huo family should provide personal insurance rather than property insurance. PICC (People's Insurance Company of China) is divided into general guarantee and joint liability guarantee. Usually fools will choose general guarantee, let alone a smart person like Mrs. Huo, because under this guarantee method, the guarantor enjoys the right of first-suit defense. In layman's terms, the creditor must first apply to enforce the debtor's own property. Only when the debtor runs away and has no money or his own property is not enough to pay off the entire debt, can the creditor require the guarantor to assume the guarantee liability. This means that Crescent Hotel can only ask Wu Xie to pay back the money first. Unless Wu Xie has no money to pay back, he can go to the Huo family. Therefore, Wu Xie went bankrupt and paid off his debts, and the Huo family did not have to pay at all.
Part 4
5. Zhang Qiling and Hei Xiazi studied in Germany together?
False. First of all, it is never mentioned in the book that I have been to Germany. This rumor may have developed from "Zhang Qiling understands German". So, can I speak German?
When (Xiao)ge went to investigate Dong Can's whereabouts, he found a German corpse and a notebook in the snowy mountains. In the notebook, there were things about the ultimate recorded by the Germans. Later, Wu Xie found a note left by the Germans in the jacket draped over (Xiao)ge's statue. From these details, it seems to be inferred that I understand German. However, the Germans have been involved in matters related to the archaeological inversion for a long time, and they have also used each other with the Zhang family. When Wu Xie entered Medog, he also met many Germans and brought his own translator, so it was not difficult to find a German or even a German translator in Medog. It is not ruled out that he does not need to be very proficient in German to communicate with Germans.
Moreover, he is a person who is extremely talented in languages. When he went to investigate Dong Can, he could not understand the conversation of the Tibetan porter and could not understand the word "ultimate" written in Tibetan in his notebook. But later he learned it after staying in Medog for a while, so it is entirely possible that he learned basic German through communicating with Germans in Medog. Does language learning have to be achieved by going abroad? What's more, he didn't even have an ID card at the time, so how could he go to Germany......
Later, Xu Lei even said that (Xiao)ge didn't know German well:
「Xu Lei’s new book live broadcast in October last year (2022)
Host: A friend asked if Xiaoge can speak Northeastern dialect?
Xu Lei: Then he can definitely speak it. Xiaoge can also speak English.
Host: Does he speak German, too?
Xu Lei: Ah? (Shocked, why didn’t I know about this?)
Host: A friend said below that Xiaoge can also speak German, so you are writing a book for Sanshu (NPSS), but Xiaoge doesn't speak German.
Xu Lei: (Laughing awkwardly) Yeah, yeah.
Host: (Laughing awkwardly) If you have a mouth, you can speak.
Xu Lei: Well... that's possible, maybe a little bit, but it's that kind of... uh... then I can say that I can do it a little bit.
Host: Xiaoge can also speak zongzi language.
Xu Lei: Yes, actually it is called insect language, which simulates the sound of insects to test whether there are very dangerous insects in the corpse.」
6. Did Li Cu say "Wake up, we're going home" to Wu Xie in Sand Sea? [IIrc it should be the other way around but it has the same point though]
False. The only time this sentence appears in the entire Daomu Biji series is in Daomu Biji Vol. 8, when Wu Xie and Pangzi went to the Zhang family's Ancient Building to save Xiaoge. When Wu Xie saw the ancient building and saw his brother dying, he thought he was dead. He instantly felt that the world had collapsed, his body felt despair one step ahead of his consciousness, and he patted (Xiao)ge's face in a state of despair and said, "Wake up, go home."
So how did the rumor come to be that Li Cu also said such things to Wu Xie? Since I haven't watched any movies and TV series related to Daomu Biji, I searched for a long time and found out that this is the plot of the Sha Hai (Tomb of the Sea) web series, which was rumored to be the original content, and coupled with the spread of the yx (marketing) account, it became a rumor that everyone said. Personally, I hope that the book and the drama can be separated, at least not to spread unfounded rumors as the content of the original work (the novel).
My thought:
It was posted in December 2023, so I think it's still relevant. I don't know if anyone would be interested in this matter but I think it's pretty interesting, so I couldn't help but repost it here (^_^;)ゞ
Thanks for reading! (◍•ᴗ•◍)✧*。

Modern Cdramas I watched in 2023
This was my first year in Dramaland (both Chinese and Korean). And I have to say that for the most part I have enjoyed my journey in discovering the dramas. This list includes dramas that were released before 2023 as well.
9. Love of Replica
This one of those dramas with lookalikes where the female lead impersonates her lookalike and solves the mystery about her backstory. Also, it's a bodyguard romance so I definitely expected some things going in. It's full of cliches and tropes some enjoyable and some irritating. I have to praise Yu Yue (actress portraying the female lead), she really made me believe that lookalikes were two completely different people. The chemistry between the main couple is fire. I did not enjoy the secondary characters' romance. However the overall squad energy and their team dynamic was great. I kinda guessed the twist but was surprised by how dark the drama went. Overall, I liked most of it and I was disappointed how some of the characters ended up. If you want a bodyguard romance with kinda obvious twists with very good cast chemistry then you'll probably like it.
8. Parallel Love
This is a time travel drama (you'll see more of these in this list) where Lin Miao, the female lead travels from 2020 to 2010 and she must help Jiao Yang, who is the Vice President of Hong Yu, become the president of the company within 3 months otherwise she will disappear forever. What I liked most about is that Lin Miao is very competant and smart, even if she is not experienced for the task she will still try her best and give it her all. I enjoyed the romance and the dynamic of the main leads. It definitely has plot holes regarding time travel and the rules were not properly explained. They also did not really focus much on the time travel part and did use the potential things that they could do with time travel. However, the interaction between the present and the future Lin Miao was very well done and something that many people would be able to relate to. The business plot was medium and not very interesting. The main leads' personalities and character arcs was the reason why I enjoyed the drama. However, they left the ending ambiguous so if you don't mind open endings then you'll enjoy this time travel/corporate romance drama.
7. Love under the Full Moon
Another time travel drama with a twist that Lei Chu Xia (female lead), who has time travelled 10 years into the future can't leave Xu Xiao Dong side beyond a certain distance. Together they work to recover her memory to unravel the mysteries of the past decade. This drama has great romance, unique time travel premises further in the series, good character development for the main and secondary cast, an antagonist that seems like a real person which makes it seem like we could meet someone like them in real life and a plot with unexpected paths. However, it does have a bittersweet open ending which could make some people hate the drama. Despite that I really liked the drama.
6. Mr. Bad
One day, Nan Xing, an online novel writer makes a wish for an "unforgettable love" in a wishing pool. Then, Xiao Wu Di, the villain of her story, suddenly appears before her! She tries to avoid him, but Xiao Wu Di finds her and threatens her into taking care of him. Unfortunately for him, Nan Xing's wish comes with a special power: whenever she needs help, Xiao Wu Di teleports next to her to fulfill her wish. It's fun, fluffy and sweet with not much angst. The romance is cute and the dynamic with the secondary cast is enjoyable. The ending frustrated me but I assume they did it to pass the censors so I just pretend the last 7 mins don't exist. This is one of those shows you can watch when you just want to turn your brain off and watch a sweet story.
5. My Lethal Man
It's premise is similar to Love of Replica however here Shen Man Ning, an art student takes the place of Zhuang Xin Yan, granddaughter of a business tycoon. Yan Xing Cheng, the mysterious male lead is ruthless in pursuing the mastermind behind the threats and is not really sympathetic to Xin Yan but as they face the difficulties together they fall in love. The romance is so good and their dynamic is very different from typical ones. I found the secondary characters' romance weird and poorly done. The plot was really good and the pace kept moving along nicely. Except for the secondary romance, I had a great time watching it, I really recommend this one if you want a drama that balances mystery/thriller and romance and does a good job at both aspects.
4. Love in Time
A time travel drama again ! This is the last one though. This one is unique because the appartment in which He Zhen Yu has recently moved into merges with it's past one. This is how he meets a rookie reporter Chen Jia Lan who is a former tenant from four months ago, and through some miracle, they are able to see each other. When they attempt to prevent future misfortunes by changing the past together, their romance blossoms. Their romance was so good that I really ended up hardcore rooting for them to get their happy ending. I don't want to give away too much so all I'll say is that the time travel and its consequences were handled very well for the most part and the plot was interesting and took surprising turns. He Zhen Yu's character arc was very well portrayed on the other hand while in the beginning I related to Chen Jia Lan, in the latter part of the drama I was frustrated with her choices and how she didn't have a character growth moment. All the actors did a good job but I have to say that the main leads' acting was very good and made me very immersed in their story. All in all, I had a very good time watching it as the ending brought it all together for me.
3. Lucky's First Love
It's one of those office romances which has a light tone for the most part. Xing Yun is competent and hardworking who was there with Xia Ke when he started the company. They have been working together for years and have deep understanding of each other and work well together. Thankfully, Xia Ke is not one of those CEOs who are jerks and cold hearted. He may be reserved but he is quite caring (not in an overt way) not only towards Xing Yun but also his employees. Xing Yun does go out with someone else in the start but it doesn't last long and love triangle shenanigans are not long drawn out. The main leads' romance is sweet and depicts their daily interactions and they have great kiss scenes. The secondary couples are also great. This drama has character development for main and secondary characters, wholesome workplace and family dynamics, no over the top melodrama, lifelike workplace and relationship issues, slice of life interactions and very little angst. This is a great watch for when you need something short and sweet that's not too heavy.
2. Ordinary Greatness
The show mainly focuses on novice police officers that are starting their one year long mentorship. They soon discover that the grass-roots work is different from what they imagined, and, after some struggles, they're gradually moved by the sense of achievement and honour gained in their work. Throughout the show we explore their characters, their comraderie with each other, with their mentors and with other police officers at their station. We also get to know their mentors and other police officers at the station which immerses the audience in the show deeply. It is a slice of life type drama, where most of the cases are not major crimes. All actors knock it out of the park with their emotional as well as subtle portrayals. This show depicts how even small acts and seemingly tedious and insignificant work really have great impact on people's lives and that the people doing such grassroots work contribute just as much and are just as important to the society if not more as the people doing big acts like taking down criminal gangs. While some situations and cases are specific to China, everyone will be able to relate to majority of them. I must say this is a must watch drama.
1. Arsenal Military Academy
This is a Republican era drama in which Xie Xiang assumes her brother's identity to join the Chinese army and is accepted in the Arsenal Military Academy. While she is the main lead the story also follows Gu Yan Zheng(main lead) - a spoilt quarrelsome rich kid, the gentle and introverted Shen Jun San, Qu Man Ting - a famous actress and singer and secondarily other cadets, their teachers and other locals. It has great comedy, really good romance (including their hilarious bickering), enjoyable action and entertaining dynamic of the cast. All the actors did an excellent job here, the standouts being Bai Lu, for portraying being able to convincingly play the female role and the female disguised as male role all while knocking out her emotional and comedic scenes and Xu Kai, who can forget his electrifying performance as a lovable troublemaker. I have to warn you that the story gets serious in the last 10ish episodes and that the love triangle does drag out a little bit longer than it should but it's resolution is still good. To me the drama didn't seem overly patriotic so I didn't have a problem rooting for the characters and their goals of protecting and improving their country. This ranked first because it's romance, characters and their comraderie won me over completely.
You can also check out my costumed cdrama rankings.
As I'm still a newbie to cdramas and kdramas, I welcome your recommendations.

Psych-Hunter (or, as we have taken to calling it, House Haunters), is a very silly show. It has all the doofy charm of a USA Network shoestring-budget wacky buddy detectives series. It has some great aesthetic ideas, and then it just wanders off and gets real invested in the most damp-toast heterosexual romance ever. All of the teenagers are in their thirties. The main character jingles everywhere he walks, like a belled cat. I choose to interpret the setting as Dragon City, 1929. How do you say "Characters Welcome" in Chinese? It's that.
Anyway, I want to look at pictures of the actors when they're not in their weird steampunk outfits, so you're going to join me.
Neo Hou/Hou Minghao/Mr. Tuff Paws - Jiang Shuo (and I'm only going to do a few pictures of him, because he's Kind Of A Big Deal, and knowing what he looks like out of costume is no great accomplishment (even if it's genuinely impressive how quickly he can go from Didi to Rough Trade))
Liu Dong Qin - Qin Yi Heng/Dr. Qin, Medicine Woman (Does he get extras because I think he's hot? Listen: yes.)
Zhu Xu Dan/Bambi Zhu - Yuan Mu Qing, who looks so much better without the hideous bangs they use to pretend she's like twelve years old or whatever she's supposed to be
Zong Feng Yan - General Yuan Zhen/Moustache Dad
Xiao Xu - Bai Kai/Moustache Cop

Nirvana in Fire Rewatch Episode Twelve
Events
MCS has a meeting with Zhao-lao-xiansheng. At the end Zhao mentions Lin Shu, though not by name, and MCS has emotions.
Nihuangs gallops up and questions MCS, eventually revealing him as Lin Shu. Many emotions are had by all.
MCS falls ill from too many emotions.
Jingyan runs into Shen Zhui while he's investigating some potential smuggling, but he doesn't know what substance yet.
The Jiangzuo Alliance representative at the docks, Zhao-dage, observes that there's an unusual amount of illegal gunpowder being smuggled.
Tong Lu traces the gunpowder to an illegal fireworks factory previously run by the Minister of Revenue for the CP.
We briefly meet Yan Que as he drops by his house and talks to Yujin.
The Empress falls ill, but it's not serious. Jing-pin sniffs her teacups.
Names and titles
"If Mei Changsu cannot deceive her, Lin Shu must persuade her."
The Viki subtitles insist that Nihuang is saying 'Sir Su', but she's not saying Su at all, just xiansheng.
Jing-pin says "Chen-fei-jiejie".
Lin Shu used to be called xiao-huaren, which the subtitles translate as Little Fireball, though I don't know why fireball rather than fire anything else.
Lin Shu refers to "Dong-jie" and "Jingyan" to Nihuang; Nihuang refers to "Jing-wang". I'm beginning to think that she and Jingyan were never on given name terms.
Yujin calls his father 'die' - fairly standard but someone might want to know for fic.
Characters
Being Lin Shu puts a strain on MCS and Li Gang knows it.
MCS didn't expect Nihuang to be the first to find out.
Past Nihuang has seen Lin Shu's exposed collarbone, which is risque by these standards.
Lin Shu used to rescue Nihuang from trouble.
Yan Que is accompanied by a servant with a fuchen.
Yan Que does alchemy, or at least Yujin thinks he does.
Banruo correctly identifies that Fei Liu is MCS's soft spot.
The oldest Noble Consort is Xu-guifei; there's also a Yuan-guifei.
The dock worker Zhao and Gong Yu know each other, and Gong Yu calls him Zhao-dage.
Costumes
I hate Nihuang's pink lipstick. It can't be historically accurate.
Past Nihuang wore a similar headdress but had braids in the long loose part of her hair.
When confined to bed, MCS ties his hair back with a white ribbon. Fei Liu is wearing a pale blue ribbon as well as a metal hair ornament.
Time
It's the middle of winter.
MCS is confined to bed for a few days
Place
Jinling is on a canal.
The spot where MCS talked with Zhao-lao-xiansheng and later had his revelation scene with Nihuang is very close to Lingyi Temple

I watched SCI, me likes it
AND LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT IT
SCI is based -or heavily inspired if you will, after all that's where the characters came from- a novel written in the Qin Dynasty (1644-1911 more less) in the reign of Emperor Qianlong (1825-1908) attributed to Shi Yukun and Yu Yue.
I won't say much bout it rn, except:
The novel went to several names and hands but ended up with the names '7 heroes and 5 gallants' and '3 heroes and 5 gallants'.
It began as a collection of stories of the real person that was Bao Zheng, Bao Qingtian, a judge of unbreakable character known for being fair to all. It mixes both real things and fiction, tho it's mostly fiction.
In the novel, Bao Zheng shares protagonism with the heroes and gallants, all which are:
The heroes:
Hero of the North, Ouyang Chun.
Hero of the South, Imperial Cat, Zhan Zhao.
Black Fox, Zhi Hua.
Twin heroes, Din Zhaolan and Dong Zhaohui.
Xiao Zhuge, Chen Zhongyuan.
Young Hero, Ai Hu.
And the gallants:
Sky Rat, Lu Fang.
Earth Rat, Han Zhang.
Mountain Rat, Xu Qing.
River Rat, Jiang Ping.
And Sleek Rat, Bai Yutang.
Other characters include:
The four warriors:
Ma Han, Zhang Long, Zhao Hu and Wang Chao.
Bao Xing, Bao Zheng's page boy.
Gongsun Ce, Bao Zheng's secretary, sometimes also doctor.
Zhao Zhen, the Emperor (also a real person, he was an Emperor of the Song dynasty, in which the story takes place)
And, the Prince of Xiangyang, the Emperor's uncle, Zhao Jue.
The novel covers how Bao Zheng became a Judge and the many wacky and not so wacky adventures of those who would end up working for and/or with him. Not all the heores and gallants start working for the government, in fact, those who end up as officials, do so because the Emperor orders so and you can't just say no to the Emperor.
When it comes to Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang... Their relationship goes from one-sided rivalry to rivals to coworkers also maybe friends, and well, there are many reasons (dont expect much tho, better put on the pink tinted glasses to help) why they're a popular ship, not to spoil but the first time Zhan Zhao sees Bai Yutang he finds him to be so handsome that he can't help but put down his wine cup.
I won't go into details but I REALLY TRULY LOVE this novel, is 120 chapters long, divided in 3 volumes. Its stories work both as a whole story and as independent ones, all protagonist get their time to shine and it can be so SO funny.
I may make more posts about it, cuz I LOVE it, but also not just about it, but also in relation to SCI, as one of its MANY adaptations/derivative works.

Year End Drama Recap
This was a year that tested me in more ways than one. I have had highs and lows unlike any I had experienced before. I lost much, spent a long time in throes of anxiety and depression. I also managed to beat something that was making my life miserable. A decision I took has led to a happier, healthier me. I made lifestyle changes that have yielded fantastic results. Overall, this was one heck of a roller-coaster year. Amidst all these upheavals, dramas grounded me and provided with some much-needed distraction. In fact, I managed to watch quite a few dramas, both Korean and Chinese. This post is a recap of the dramas I watched/abandoned or am currently watching. Since this will be a long post, I will put it under “keep reading”.
K-Dramas
That Winter the Wind Blows- (Abandoned) -This drama had been on my to-be-watched list for a very long time, primarily because of Kim Bum. I love that guy and I wanted to like this drama. Alas, this drama was much too strange for me. That the central romance goes down the whole “fake-cest” route, with one party actively defrauding the other was too icky for me to continue. The cinematography was excellent, but the dull grey tones were too dreary for me.
Black- (Abandoned)- The concept of this series was fantastic. It even had Jo Jae Yoon (Cheetah for Mad Dog/ Perm job from Save Me), someone I love to bits. I absolutely adored the character played by Kim Dong Jun (Oh Man Soo), and enjoyed the male lead, Han Moo Gang, played by Song Seung Hoon. The story was interesting, and the acting was great. Why then did I stop watching it? Because this series has the unfortunate tendency to use bodily fluids as a crutch for humor, which grossed me out thoroughly. I can’t stand that brand of humor. I had to stop.
Goblin- (Completed)- Loved this drama. Enjoyed every second of it. The bromance between the Goblin and the Reaper was the cherry on top of this fantastic sundae. Also…. Lee Dong Wook! *fans self*
The Guest- (Completed)- One of the best horror series I have seen in a while. I liked that this series did not go the gore/jump scares route. Instead, it went the environmental and situational horror. Led by capable, strong, and decisive leads. Supported by able side characters and a tight plot, The Guest kept me glued to the screen. Also… Kim Jae Wook! *fans self*
Strangers From Hell- (Completed)- This was such a disappointment. It started off brilliantly – a naïve, young protagonist stuck in a claustrophobic, ready to explode situation. And then, it turned into a torture-porn with believability diminishing with every episode, this was an arduous watch. The caricatursih portrayal of the villains only exacerbated my frustrations. I only held on because of Lee Dong Wook. But it was an uphill task.
Hotel Del Luna- (Completed)- This was one heck of a ride. I loved the quirky and deliciously evil Jang Man Wol played by the competent IU. The male lead, Gu Chan Sung played by the incredible Yeo Jin Goo, was delightful to watch. A perfect supernatural romantic comedy that warmed my heart. Worth the hype.
Crowned Clown- (Watching) – This Korean take on The Prince and The Pauper has Yeo Jin Goo in a brilliant double role. The guest appearance of Jang Hyuk makes that series that much better.
C-Drama
The Wolf- (Abandoned) – I began watching this drama for Xiao Zhan. I love that guy and I had to watch it. The drama had the added benefit of Li Qin and Xin Zhilei, so I was looking forward to it. But then, the drama was chopped by the censors and the end result was one hot, incoherent mess. It did not help that the main couple, Bo Wang (Darren Wang) and Ma Zhai Xing (Li Qin), were one toxic mess. Xiao Zhan’s Ji Chong was the only good thing about the drama but even he could not salvage it for me.
Dance of the Phoenix- (Abandoned)- Started watching this drama for Wang Hao Xuan. But the male lead, Jun Lin Yuan (played by Xu Kai Cheng), had all of half an expression on his face throughout the drama. It did not help that the drama went down the whole, “Black is ugly, fair is beautiful” route. I was disgusted.
My Heroic Husband- (Abandoned)- Half the cast of Joy of Life meant this automatically became a drama I would watch. Guo Qi Lin is a delight to watch, and Song Yi was competent. I was enjoying myself watching this drama, until I wasn’t. Guo Qi Lin’s Ning Yi was a little too much of a Mary Sue for me. This just wasn’t my cup of tea.
The Rebel Princess- (Completed)- Rarely has a drama elicited such a polarizing response from me. Even though I was not entirely sold on Zhang Zi Yi playing a teenaged A’Wu, I pushed through, primarily because of Liu Duan Duan’s Song Huai’en. But slowly, I was sucked into the complicated palace drama. It was thrilling, entertaining and fun. I loved it right up to the point where Purba Rgyal’s character, Ma Zilu, died. From that point on, the drama meandered. It went into a lala land and when both Song Huai’en and Jia Yi Ping’s Wang Su went rotten, I was ready to give up. But at @terribleteej’s behest, I continued. In the end, I loved some bits, liked some bits, got annoyed with some things and downright hated some of it. In the end, I did end up writing some fanfics. So yeah… there is that.
Hope All Is Well With Us- (Completed)- Watched it for Liu Duan Duan. Not worth the time spent, can be skipped.
The Long Ballad- (Completed)- Unpopular opinion perhaps, but I really enjoyed this drama. I watched this drama when I was in a really bad place mentally, and it gave me exactly the distraction I was seeking. I wanted something that did not need me to think too much. I went in with zero expectations and enjoyed myself. I liked all four leads, and fell in love with Liu Yu Ning’s singing.
Love Me if You Dare- (Completed)- When I watched Mindhunter, I became interested in understanding the mind of a serial killer. Since a character in one of my original stories is a serial killer, I needed to study more about them. One thing that I learned during my studies is that most TV series get the portrayals wrong. I have seen interviews of real killers and trust me, they are far more chilling than any actors I have seen. Love Me if You Dare also fell in the trap of a wildly gesticulating, weird face contorting, and monologuing serial killer instead of how they can be. The real ones don’t need all of those bells and whistles to chill you to the bone, they can unnerve you with one casual, throwaway remark. That said, I did enjoy looking at the beautiful faces of Wallace Huo, Sandra Ma and Wang Kai.
Nirvana in Fire- (Completed)- Well, well, well. What do I say about this fantastic political drama? Intelligent characters, glorious sets, gorgeous costumes and a taut script. I enjoyed this drama fully. Mei Chang Su reminded me of Chanakya with his cold, precise, and calculative political maneuvers. It was even better with competent and useful female characters and some fantastic battle choreography. I would highly recommend this drama to anyone who wants a smart political thriller.
Longest Day in Chang’an- (Watching)- This is a show that requires 110% of my mind and attention. This is a thrilling and complex series that doesn’t believe in spoon feeding the audience. It needs a certain state of mind, and I will admit that it is taking me forever to watch the show but finish this show I will because I like what I see.
Sword Snow Stride- (???)- Am I still watching this show? Am I abandoning this? What does this show want to do? What exactly is happening? Do I like this show? I don’t know yet. This show confuses me.
Feng Qi Luoyang- (Watching)- I am loving this drama and enjoying everything that this drama has to offer. Just three more episodes to go, and if this drama ends the way it has been going, this would be one of the best things of 2021. Also… Liu Duan Duan *fans self*
Hindi/English
House of Secrets - (Completed)- I would also use this space to talk about a documentary I watched on Netflix that had me thinking for a very long time. This three-part documentary seeks answers to a horrifying and bizarre incident that took place the Burari area of New Delhi, India, in 2018. A family of 11 were found hanging, with their mouths gagged, eyes blindfolded, hands tied and cotton stuffed into their ears. The documentary chronicles the police investigation that took place amidst mounting political pressure and the media circus. The documentary seeks answers to some difficult questions. And the answers that do come forth are even more bizarre than the incident itself. This is definitely a documentary I would recommend highly. However, be warned, this is very disturbing and is likely to give you some sleepless nights.

Nirvana in Fire Character Reference Sheet Roughly in the Order Those Characters Are Introduced
For @howdydowdy, as promised, and for anyone else who, like me, is terrible at names and needs some kind of “Who?? Ohhh right. That guy.” reminder.
Basically, my Nirvana in Fire Journey started with me watching half the first episode, being wildly confused, realizing I was in over my head re: names and thus deciding to go back to the beginning and watch it again But Taking Notes This Time. I watched the whole show with a notebook and pen at my side. I figured I may as well spare you all the labour by typing it up.
As more information was revealed, I often added it to a character’s initial note, but by and large I’m leaving those extra notes out so you can experience the joy and confusion and anguish of New Information yourself. The exception to this is generally a person’s name, title, and position. E.g. Duke Qing’s name, Bai Ye, isn’t mentioned until a number of episodes after he’s first mentioned, if I recall correctly, but knowing that the person named “Bai Ye” is the same person called “Duke Qing” is exactly why I took these notes for myself in the first place.
Basically this isn’t intended to be a character guide that lays out exactly who a person is, their relationships to the other characters, and their place in the story, but rather something you can look at whenever someone mentions a name that jogs your memory just enough for you to be able to place to person. Which is why the notes tend to be either the context in which the person was introduced or the relationship through which they’re introduced.
Some names and notes are inherently spoilers, but hopefully by virtue of the fact that this is broadly in the order a character is first mentioned/introduced, you can avoid spoilers simply by not scrolling down too far. For those persons where their name or an alter ego comes in significantly after their initial introduction and is a spoiler, they are listed a second time starting with the “new information” and with the note in italics indicating their original entry (there aren’t a lot of these, don’t worry).
I will readily admit that some of my handwritten notes are just a name and then a blank space because apparently I just never actually added a note for them. I haven’t bothered adding those people here. Yes it’s because I’ve forgotten entirely who they are, but I’m pretty sure that means you’ll be okay if you immediately forget who they are too. (That being said, I get the sense there are actually relevant people missing from this list. As the show carried on and introductions became less frequent, remembering them became less difficult.)
The List
