Favorite Disabled Web Novel Character Tournament
Last Checked: October 31st, 2024 - Please check the original post for updates
Submissions End: TBD
Rules
One character per submission
Submit as many times as you want
Must be from a web novel or an adaptation
In-world disabilities that don't exist IRL (ex: a character unable to use magic in a world where everyone else/most people can) will be accepted as long as you think it qualifies as a disability
Mental & non-physical disabilities will also be accepted, including mental illnesses & neurodiversity
The WN doesn't explicitly have to mention they're disabled/their disability, but I don't want to include pure headcanons since this tournament is more about highlighting canon disability representation. Feel free to talk about any headcanons in the ask box though! I enjoy hearing y'all's thoughts :)
Tag: #disabled WN characters tournament
Submissions
Cui Buqu from Peerless
Submission: Chronic fatigue, vulnerability to illness, heart in the wrong spot. Basically generically chronically ill
(The following is all from the Less Popular Danmei Character Tournament bc it’s really good propaganda lol)
Submission: He’s mean, he’s disabled and unapologetic about it, he’s a genius and all his braincells escape him when faced with his rival, he’s a secret agent and has no martial arts, he’s deeply in love and will never say so unless pushed, he will liken his rival to his sun and then tell him he’s the most annoying person he’s ever met. He’s a bastard little fox <3
Additional Propaganda #1
Additional Propaganda #2
Fu Shen from Golden Terrace/Golden Stage
Submission 1: Fu Shen's leg is broken in battle. He has to use a brace and a wheelchair while he recovers.
Submission 2:
Crippled legs/wheelchair bound for most of the novel  propaganda: The prologue of the novel is him basically suffering an assassination attempt which crippled his legs horribly when a bunch of rocks fall on him. Despite being wheelchair bound for most of the novel (he later gets these like leg exoskeleton support things but he can't wear them for more than a few hours or something and still has to use the wheelchair), he's still depicted as being just as badass and respected. His men still hold him in high regard, and he still goes around investigating shit and even once using a crossbow to take someone down. He also uses people underestimating him now that he's crippled to his advantage. His love interest is also incredibly sweet and remodels his whole estate to be wheelchair accessible right before he moves in after they're married.
Carrd/Image Link
Gu Mang from Remnants of Filth / Yuwu
Submission: He's missing some of his souls, which renders him intellectually disabled and amnesiac.
Wiki Link
Gu Yun from Sha Po Lang
Submission: He's half-deaf and half-blind, but still a badass.
Wiki Link
Hua Cheng from Heaven Official’s Blessing
Submission: Blind in one eye and uses his magical butterflies as a disability aid to help him see!
Jing Weiyi from The Imperial Uncle
Submission: Jing Weiyi's leg was broken when he fell off a horse when he was young. Afterwards, he walked with a limp for many years.
Ji Yushi from Mist [Unlimited]
Submission: Hyperthymesia... Basically, he can remember almost everything, and while that helps some in the scenarios of the novel, it also has a huge detrimental effect on him, and he needs pills to calm his mind and such. I'm not sure if it really counts as a disability, especially since there are less than a hundred people with this in real life, but I think it should count for this tournament since it's neurodivergence and such.
Kim Kiryeo from The Hunter of the Other World Who Is Being Misunderstood
Submission: Kiryeo has a badly healed leg injury which makes it difficult for him to walk and impossible to run, lungs damaged by smoking that heavily limit his physical ability, lung cancer that causes him to cough up blood occasionally and a severe depression to the point of memory loss. He couldn't receive treatment for his leg and cancer due to the lack of money and in the end gave up on it and started to smoke to cope.
Mae Yakbing from Best Teacher Baek
Submission: She has a rare chronic illiness that causes her to get sick often, grow weak over time and die young.
Mu Tianchi (Jing Wang) from The Disabled Tyrant's Beloved Pet Fish
Submission: Jing Wang is mute.
Shen Qiao from Thousand Autumns
Disability: Blind
Shen Qingqiu from The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System
Submission: Chronic illness. SQQ is poisoned by a fictional poison literally named “without a cure.” In universe his condition is treated much like a chronic illness that requires constant monitoring and maintenance (medication, check-ups and regular qi infusions) in order to keep in check. Even when he adheres to his treatment regime, it still has unpredictable flare-ups that could put him in serious danger if they happen at the wrong time. The flare-ups (which happen randomly and vary in length unless he receives medical aid) completely block his ability to use qi thus making in-universe actions that are normal/habitual for most his peers (such as flying) much more risky for him.
Shi Qingxuan from Heaven Official’s Blessing (TGCF)
Submission: Ends up with a broken arm and leg that is not healed
Song Qingshi from Mistakenly Saving the Villain
Submission:
ALS before he transmigrated (hopefully this counts, it's big part of his character as a doctor and he thinks about it a lot, and he even gets panicky in his new body when his limbs go numb!!) It's also not explicitly said but he's very autistic coded and canonically has a hard time understanding metaphors, communicating with other people/understanding others emotions, and when he's reading about medicine or doing experiments he hyperfixates and doesn't do anything else for the entire day. When he's with others he gets so anxious he ends up putting on a stern face, so people think he's scary when he's internally panicking
Wiki Link
Wei Wuxian from Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation
Submission: Wei Wuxian has trauma responses to several things, in particular dogs and the sparky sparky spirit whip. There's no way he doesn't have PTSD with everything he went through.
Xiao Xingchen from Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation
Disability: Blind
Xue Xian from Copper Coins / Tong Qian Kan Shi
Submission:
Peddling my disabled gay dragon again... He's paraplegic for most of the story, and this affects him in his true form and all of the forms he shapeshifts into. He also gets a wheelchair at a certain point and he's so happy about it 🥺  He's also, like, such a vibrant and charming character. Hes soooooo annoying(affection and approval) and so over the top and i support him in everything. Also lets not forget that he has a tiny noodle form and curled around his bf's wrist like a bracelet. this lives rent free in my head what a move
Carrd Link
Zhou Zishu from Faraway Wanderers
Submission: He injects himself with the Nails of Seven Apertures for Three Autumns. These nails result in him becoming sickly. The effects of the nails are a limited life span, halved martial arts strength, periodic pain, a ruined sleep schedule, and withered meridians.
Wiki Link
Rejected
Ballister Blackheart from Nimona
Reason: Not from a web novel
Sapphia from High Class Homos
Reason: Not from a web novel (Webtoon)

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) Masterpost
Tumblr media
Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) is a Vocal synth (Vocaloid and SynthV) music project. It consists of songs themed around different figures throughout Chinese history. The project is a collaboration between different artists and creatives, with music and videos featuring prominent traditional Chinese elements. The project's title translates to "The Records of Magnificence of the Wangchuan" - In Chinese mythology, "Wangchuan" (or River of Forgetting) is a river in the Underworld that can rid one of their past life's memories, similar to the river Lethe.
A mobile game adaptation has also been developed by NetEast. Unfortunately, I haven't played it so I can't give much insight on it. However, I assume that its premise is similar to that of the idea behind the project as a whole: all these historical figures meeting each other in the Underworld after they died. Maybe.
You can find all the songs on Bilibili. The official Weibo can be found here. The game's website, which includes all characters appearing so far in the game, can be found here, and its Weibo can be found here.
(If you prefer YouTube, I've also put together a handy playlist. Please know that most of these videos are reposts though, so please watch the original Bilibili MVs if you can!)
This blog is where I will be posting everything I feel like I need to say about the songs in this project. A lot of it is lifted from my Twitter account but will be in much more detail. Note that I probably won't touch collab songs, or songs that don't focus solely on the project's own characters.
Disclaimer: I do not speak Chinese, nor am I an expert on Chinese history. Therefore, I cannot reliably translate the lyrics to these songs, nor my words should be taken as gospel. I am merely a nerd gushing about my hyperfixation.

i feel like i should make a post saying what my blog is about. i mostly use tumblr on mobile (i know), and mostly i just kinda use it casually, lurking around, and saving/rbing stuff that i like. so don’t expect too much organization or original content here. but the stuff i do make myself, i tag with #made by suna.
i’m (currently) into danmei/bl, which this blog is mostly dedicated to. but again i am a disorganized mess so i will probably like and rb other stuff on here too.
if you know any good gl media set in ancient asia, please please please let me know because i am desperate for it but cannot find it anywhere :C
i consume most danmei in chinese since i grew up in china and am a native speaker, so sometimes i may be confused about the english names of places/things/people’s titles in these works. please be gentle ^_^
if you scroll down far enough you can find random stuff i rb’d before i really knew how tumblr worked and before i got into danmei so you can just ignore them :’)
under the cut: what i’ve watched/read, what’s next on my list, and my sloppy tagging system. i might update it whenever, or not. we’ll see c:
here is the list of things i’ve read/watched/am into:
mo dao zu shi / grandmaster of demonic cultivation by mxtx
i’ve watched chen qing ling / the untamed (live action adaptation)
i’ve read the book
i’ve watched the q animation
i’m a few eps into the animated adaptation but i need a subscription to continue so i put it on pause for now
have not listened to the audio dramas
my ships:
lan wangji/wei wuxian, lan xichen/jin guangyao
my no-no ships:
jiang cheng/wei wuxian, jiang cheng/wen qing, wei wuxian/wen qing
ships that i don’t feel too much about either way:
jiang cheng/nie huaisang, 3zun
any of the junior ships (they’re all so cute together, any pair would work well tbh lmao)
tian ya ke / faraway wanderers by priest
i’ve watched shan he ling / word of honor (live action adaptation)
have not watched the shl concert
have not read the book
started a little bit on the prequel book qi ye / lord seventh
my ships:
wen kexing/zhou zishu, ye baiyi/rong changqing, cao weining/gu xiang, jing beiyuan/wuxi (basically all the canon ships)
du pusa/qiao luohan (the two ladies out of the four scorpion assassins)
luo fumeng/liu qianqiao (tragicomic ghost/beauty ghost)
my no-no ships:
ye baiyi/wen kexing (seriously who came up with this? no judgment to people who enjoy it but personally it’s really not for me lmao)
ships that i feel neutral about:
hanwenzhou
tian guan ci fu / heaven official’s blessing by mxtx
i’ve watched season 1 of the animated adaptation
i’m looking forward to the live action adaptation!! (hopefully airing in 2023) i’m not sure what name it’s going by yet
i’ve just started on the book
and a long time ago i’ve watched nirvana in fire / lang ya bang, which is not bl but is still a great period drama. 10/10 recommend
on my list next, in no particular order, are the following:
svsss
2ha
sha po lang
qiang jin jiu
love between fairy and devil (bg, not bl)
kinnporsche (thai, not chinese)
hannibal (also not chinese)
feel free to send recommendations my way!!
i have an awful tagging system, but basically:
#woh -- word of honor/tian ya ke stuff
#wenzhou -- wen kexing/zhou zishu
#woh gifs, #woh fanfic, #woh fanart, #woh fan comic
#mdzs -- mo dao zu shi/chen qing ling stuff
#wangxian -- lan wangji/wei wuxian
#mdzs fanfic, #mdzs fanart, #mdzs fan comic
#tgcf -- tian guan ci fu stuff
#hualian -- hua cheng/xie lian
character tags: #wen kexing, #zhou zishu, #wei wuxian, #lan wangji, etc
my stuff: #made by suna

.......hello!
once again, your writing is a m a z i n g :)
may i request......any hcs to your liking,,,but with qi rong...? i haven't seen people request somethin for him on Tumblr yet?
[you don't have to do this request, if you don't want to-]
-anon, who managed to somehow misspell 'xie lian' in a request.
Hello again anon!!
kdfvhgdif it's ok it abt the misspelling happens to the best of us dw.
OMG, you really know how to stimulate my brain juice and bring me a new challenge!!! I've never written for a character like qi rong, let's do it!
I'm just gonna do some hc bcs idk how this will work out. I'm just gonna go with the flow but I'm excited to do this!!
TW: panic attack
Ok so this ancestor has the tagged tsundere slapped on his forehead so imma add a bit of that.
So you met when you were delivering water chestnuts to puqi shrine
Xie Lian wasn't present at the moment, only qi wrong, gu zi, and Lang Ying.
The two kids were playing outside and when they noticed you Gu Zi led you inside so you could put the heavy bag near the kitchen.
You heard some muffled screams and when you turned around a man was tied by some white bandages and he was thrashing violently
You approached him carefully and gently removed a strip from his mouth
Safe to say that qi rong was a bit held back because no one had touched him as gently as you in a long time
Especially in such a delicate place.
Your hands were softer than the most vibrant orchid petals. And your single touch so gentle
The feeling was fleeting and so his stunned face quickly changed to his usual demeanor
"WHAT WERE YOU WAITING TO UNTIE ME YOU UGLY HAG?"
To say that you weren't expecting such a sweet face to say those words is an understatement.
You kinda panicked so you swiftly swept the strip to cover his mouth again
Not changing the gentleness might I add.
You patted the two kids' heads and went on your way.
A couple of days later you returned to deliver a bag of rice as a payment for the help that Xie Lian and Hua cheng gave when helping your father's fields
And there he was again, but this time he was sleeping. He didn't have the strip of cloth on his face
After you carefully put down the rice you got near him.
It did make you think that his features were refined. Maybe he could have been a prince in another lifetime
You pushed away some of his hair away so you could have a better look.
Qi rong opened his eyes but for a second he thought he was still dreaming
You were so close to his face
He let out a scream
You screamed in fright and landed on your but
"WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING? ARE YOU TRYING TO SEDUCE THIS ANCESTOR BY FORCE, YOU WRETCHED MORTAL?!?!"
You were hyperventilating a bit. Your chest was getting heavy and the room was spinning.
"I'm s-s-sorry I- I didn't mean t-to." your breathing was getting labored by the second and you started to lose focus.
"Dad Xiao Jie is not feeling well don't scream!" Gu zi said with a worried tone " Ha! Even you dare to order me around?! What an ungrateful son I have!!"
He threw a look at you and couldn't help but be reminded of when he was weak and powerless against the splendor of his cousin. When he tried to cultivate but ended up paling in comparison to even his cousin's servants.
He sighed "Aiya, hey look at me. Try to follow my breathing. Breathe in....breathe out.".
After a while, you calmed down and bowed to him " Thank you. I apologize for this."
His mouth was agape. No one has ever bowed to him out of gratitude and respect. Who were you? Why did you make him feel these new things? What did you want from him?
"Meh whatever, you look too weak anyway for me to have a satisfying meal" he said under his breath
"What?"
"What!?"
You huffed with a smile on your face " Well I thank you again gongzi" you bowed and left
Every week you payed a visit to puqi shrine. Bringing the kids and Qi Rong treats made by yourself.
You odly enjoyed listening to Qi rong talk and boasting about his deeds. He was a very funny narrator. He would go on tangents to trash people he didn't like and somehow he knew all of the gossips in the village.
Guess that sitting in the shrine all day doing nothing bettered his hearing skills.
He was also a pretty good listener. He gave great advice.
Although a bit extreme and dramatic, you knew the meaning he tried to convey.
And qi rong would never admit it but the best part of the week was when you came through those gates
Even Xie Lian started to realize that his rambunctious cousin started to be a bit calmer.
One day you were listening to him reciting a poem.
Yes I know it's odd but you were pestering him so much about it when he told you that he remembered a couple of poems from xianle that he conceded to your pleas just to shut you up.
And you did bring douhua...his favorite desert...
It tasted so much like the one his mother used to give him...
Qi Rong’s voice was soft as the autumn breeze swayed the leaves outside. The red, yellow, and orange tones mingled with the afternoon sun.
You couldn't help but fall asleep. You had done so many errands today. You were very tired. And his soft voice just lulled you to dreamland
Qi rong felt something hit his shoulder.
His breath was caught in his throat.
How could a measly mortal human look so ethereal and in peace as you looked now? Your lashes, your chubby soft cheeks, your hair swaying with the breeze. He couldn't bear to disturb you from sleep.
He huddled closer to try and provide you with more support and tried to give you a bit more warmth.
and without thinking, he pressed his lips to the crown of your head.
He realized what he did and sighed " Aiya what are you doing to me? I can't be going soft or else I'll be as pathetic as cousin crown prince..."
"But this is not that bad"

Romance in MXTX, Priest, and SHL
MXTX: Flower, Wine and Dreamworld
The romance in MXTX's works is like flower that grows in ice and snow; colorful, bright and hopelessly romantic, blossoms in misery and hardships.
It features a distinct "us against the world" mindset, depicting love as the only constant in the world. It's an eternal "dreamworld" detached from worldly matters, the perfect escapism as well as a source of strengths in the face of cruel reality.
Both MDZS and TGCF are a critique of mob mentality.
The contrast between CQL and MDZS is very interesting. While the former ends with LWJ taking charge, and therefore changing the world for the better, the novel ends with wangxian isolating themselves from grand politics and focusing more on helping individuals as recluse. It has an essentially pessimistic attitude towards the morality & intelligence of the collective.
TGCF takes a slightly more optimistic approach, featuring the crowd being courageous under the right circumstances. However, both works share a similar undertone: putting one’s absolute faith in the collective is dangerous, whereas unconditional trust and devotion can be only found in one-to-one connection
MXTX herself compares MDZS and TGCF to 花间一壶酒 (A cup of wine among flowers), MDZS being the wine and TGCF being flower. She also compares MDZS to 风雪夜归人, the person returning home from snow and wind, and TGCF to 红泥小火炉, a small red furnace.
Priest: Breezing Wind and Burning Iron
The romance in priest's works is more complicated. It's the most gentle in its normal state, when it is rational and collected, in which case it's like the breezing wind, soothing, sweet and light-hearted. It gives the individuals more incentive to achieve their individual and/or societal vision, as well as more reason to value their own lives & well-being.
In Faraway Wanderers, the most distinct feature of WenZhou relationship is how in naturally sync they are, and how comfortable & smooth their dynamic is. They both have past burden, but it doesn’t matter, because they bring simple joy, understanding and happiness in each other’s lives.
In Sha Po Lang and The Guardian, the ML’s lingering love for the MC motivates them to become better version of themselves, to care about others, and to form a holistic vision about bettering society.
In The Defective, Lin Jingheng(MC) explicitly said that Lu Bixing(ML) is the only meaning in his life. He had little incentive to care about his own life after his revenge plan fell apart. LBX helped him reconnect with his inner idealism, and gave him a reason value his life.
When the passion and fiery energy manifests itself, however, the romance is like burning iron, blood and fire. It isn’t actually toxic or unhealthy, but it's not pure and innocent either; in this case, it strives for something deeper and more intense, never content with the past or the present. The sheer intensity of relationship is like a double-edged sword, walking the fine line between unconditional devotion and dangerous obsession.
SHL: Spring Water and Healing Open Wounds
The romance in SHL is like "spring water"; it's warm, gentle, nurturing. It breaks through the boundary between individuals to bring the couple closer to each other, taking them back to a utopia of their childhood dream, away from social pressure and responsibility. The theme central to their relationship is “salvation”: how love is able to bring people back to integrity.
Both drama wkx and drama zzs have lots of regret about their past sins and wrongdoings. Four Seasons Manor is essentially a metaphor for purity, acceptance and the safety of childhood home. How to make drama wkx open up and accept this safe harbor as his home is one of the most significant plot-lines of the show.
SHL couple is way more emotionally vulnerable and expressive. A significant part of SHL arc is healing the wounds in an open and honest way. They cuddle and confide in each other way more often, talk about their shameful past and even cry about their regrets in front of one another, which is very rare among MXTX/Priest works.
The heat of the relationship sometimes gets too hot and even burns; in other words, there are constant miscommunications, conflicts and misunderstandings in the relationship. However, they can never let each other go, because it's the only source of warmth left for them in their hopeless lives filled with regrets and guilt.
Similarities and Differences
*Note that this is not a SHL/TYK comparison. TYK is kind of an “unorthodox” priest novel; you will know what I mean if you have read 3+ of her works.
Relationship Dynamic & Narrative:
In MXTX’s works, the concept of “romance” itself is divined; and the characters are illustration of the ideal of “undying love”. People are made for one another, to complete one another. Her works use colorful symbolism (silver butterflies, the emperor’s smile, the 3 thousand lanterns, etc.) to depict this romanticized ideal of love.
For MXTX, the romanticization of “destined love” is one of the most recurring themes of her novels. Therefore, the readers look at their relationship through rose-color glasses. Obsession is usually framed in a jolly & romantic light, and doesn’t feature much tension or stress, and has less negative or unhealthy undertone.
In most of priest’s works and SHL, soulmates are not born but made, so they have to figure out how their relationship works step by step. Therefore the narrative is less of a “rosy picture”.
Priest has a habit of using derogatory terms to describe relationships that are mostly healthy, but somewhat “bloody” and edgy, full of excessive passion and obsession. The most common phrase is “爱生忧怖”, a Buddhist term meaning “love results in worry and fear”.
SHL obviously has to be more subtle in expressing love. That said, drama WenZhou are way more emotionally vulnerable and expressive than their novel counterparts, as well as most Priest & MXTX characters. They have a dramatic falling out once in a while, even towards the end. They barely fit the Chinese definition of Zhiji (to know me/to understand one another), but are “lovers” who are buried deep in their passion instead.
Past, Future and Evolvement:
In SHL, characters are encouraged to treasure past impressions that are thrown in figurative “wrappings”, whose luster is derived from age-old experiences (Psychological Types, Carl Jung). In other words, they are encouraged to root their love in a shared past, a Utopia of innocence.
The contrast between The Defective and Word of Honor is very interesting to observe. Both involve long separation, and the suffering and personality changes hat comes from it.   SHL narrative frames their innocent childhood as something to cling to and return to. Drama WKX is encouraged to accept his identity as Four Seasons Manor disciple because it was part of his childhood past. This is a significant part of drama WenZhou relationship.
In The Defective, the narrative doesn't encourage the couple to dwell on the past that much. On the contrary, the all-knowing AI explicitly discouraged the MC from “comparing past to present”. They are advised to accept changes, however painful it might be, and build a better, more equal dynamic out of it, evolving from one-sided pandering to fighting side-by-side.
In Priest’s novels, the characters rarely return to something in the past, but look into the future. Change is usually framed as inherently beneficial, albeit usually painful and rocky, the implication being that you need to constantly strive for something better.
Sha Po Lang is a good example of this, with Gu Yun’s changing attitude towards Chang Geng after he as he matures, gradually showing his intelligence in politics. CG starts referring to GY as Zixi instead of YiFu is also a sign of this change---to see him as equal rather than a parental figure & protector.
The Defective is even more obvious in this regard, with both parties uncomfortable with the change initially, but gradually adjusting to the changes during their 16-year separation. The ML also stops calling MC by his surname “Lin”, as a sign of viewing him as equal.
In MXTX’s works, change in personality or relationship dynamic is neither framed as painful or good. It just happens. It’s a natural flow that take place when it does. Their relationships are rarely challenged by change. They are objectively at a better place compared to their past, but it’s merely the result of a series of events rather than a deliberate choice or struggle.
WangXian’s relationship naturally changes over time after WWX’s rebirth, but neither of them really struggles with the change.
Xie Lian doesn’t even recognize Hua Cheng as the someone from his past, so they start out as friends getting to know each other.
Salvation and Changing one another:
Priest herself stated in an interview that she doesn’t believe in the concept of salvation, since people have the inner capacity to be their own savior. Therefore, priest characters usually don’t actively try to change their partner’s morals or personality. Some might be willingly influenced by their partner, but there’s rarely an element of moral condemnation. Even when there is a conflict between different values, the options are 1) to reconcile them by choosing the middle ground 2) to maintain their independence and tackle it with nuance 3) to break up.
On surface level, Mo Du/Silent Reading is about Luo Wenzhou being Fei Du’s salvation. However, as LWZ pointed out himself, Fei Du would’ve been a good person at heart with or without his influence.
In The Defective, when Lu Bixing mistakenly thought Lin Jingheng stayed in the Eighth Galaxy against his own wishes because of their relationship, and that their priorities are irreconcilable, he even thought about breaking up. Of course he was not serious about it, but this showcased that he would never try to change LJH’s convictions.
In SHL, however, the concept of salvation is central to the theme. Some find it strange that SHL make drama zzs the more “moral” one of the two, despite his action being more objectively questionable. In fact, the only reason he get framed as more “moral” is that he admitted his fault sooner, and therefore could guide drama wkx’s path back to salvation: to recognize the goodness in people, make peace with external world, to clear his name in Jianghu, and to follow due process with his revenge plan to avoid collateral damages.
“I tried to change you, but you end up changing me”, said drama ZZS. This relationship dynamic is never present in any of priest’s works I’ve read. Priest characters don’t *try* to change one another.
Does MXTX believe in salvation? Hard to tell. One could argue that Hua Cheng would have be way more amoral and even immoral if it hadn’t been for XL. This is complicated and is a topic for another time.
However, it is certain that MXTX MCs don’t condemn each other morally. “The orthodox one defending their unorthodox partner in front of the world” is a common wuxia trope, but the way MXTX novels approach it is very different from SHL.
HuaLian never had a serious falling out about being on different sides. Even when they disagree, they respect each other and love each other exactly the way they are. Hua Cheng didn’t approve of Xie Lian saving Mu Qing, but he didn’t interfere with Xie Lian’s decision. Xie Lian feels responsible for helping Shi Qingxuan in Blackwater arc, but he is perfectly fine with HC helping He Xuan keep secrets. In several cases where they have different values, they are able to make it work with ease.
LWJ never *morally* condemned WWX for his action, and never once objected to WWX practicing demonic cultivation after his rebirth. In fact, LWJ never objected to WWX’s morals; in their previous life he was worried about his safety, and struggled with what to do about certain situations due to his family background, but difference in morality is not an issue for them.
The “righteous” one does not feel the need to guide their unorthodox partner or to be their salvation with regards to integrity.
*The similarity & differences part is a bit messy and some points are not fleshed-out. Sorry about that.
**I don’t claim to have the right interpretation. The lens by which we see different styles of romance is ultimately subjective.

Mousie’s absolutely subjective, very biased Top 10 web novels list
Please note that this is hardly aiming to be objective, if one can even be properly objective about a work of fiction. It is 110% based on my preferences, which means this list is heavy on the angst and has nothing set in the modern day. It is also heavily danmei-centric, even though I read way more het romance than danmei, because for whatever reason, most of the danmei I’ve read has been insanely good.
10. Return of the Swallow - one of the two non-danmeis on this list. Smart and nuanced and with a large cast of characters. Our heroine is a long-lost daughter of the family that is brought back in and has to cope with familial struggles, crazy royals, court intrigue, invasion et al. It’s SO GOOD! There is romance with the sexy smart enemy general but honestly, it’s the heroine that is the main selling point for me.
9. Transmigrator Meets Reincarnator - the only other non-danmei novel on this list, this was my very first web novel and what drew me into this insanity. This is just a ton of fun, probably the lightest novel on this list, not an ounce of angst to be found. But it’s hilarious and features competent heroine and tsundere hero and I will always love it for opening a new world to me. Anyway, our heroine transmigrates into the novel as the female lead. Unlike the original lead though she doesn’t want to seek adventures and angst - she just wants to comfortably live with the wealthy, nice husband heroine has. Alas, said husband is no longer nice since he has previously lived this story where he was betrayed by FL and then transmigrated/reincarnated into the past. Oh well, the heroine opens up businesses and makes friends. And eventually, her husband realizes his wife is way different this time around. This actually doesn’t have much romance, not until close to the end, but this is so fun I don’t care.
8. Lord Seventh - I am only partway through this so far, but it’s already on the list because it’s smart and somehow intense AND laid-back (not sure how this works, but it does) and is honestly just a really really solid and smart period novel, with the OTP a cherry on top of a narrative sundae. Plus, I love the concept of MC deciding he is not going for his supposedly fated love - he’s tried for six lifetimes, always with disaster, and he’s just plain done and tired. When he opens his life in his seventh reincarnation and sees the person he would have given up the world for, he genuinely feels nothing at all. (Spoiler - his OTP is actually a barbarian shaman this time around, thank you Lord!)
7. Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (MDZS) - oh come on, how are you even on this tumblr if you don’t know MDZS/The Untamed? This was my very first danmei and it’s so much fun! I love everything about it - the unreliable narrator, the looping structure, the main OTP, Wei Wuxian’s laidback, traumatized insouciance, everything. Anyway, the plot in the event you somehow transported here from 2005 is that the Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, Wei Wuxian, was defeated by the righteous sects over a decade ago and fell of a cliff to his death. Only now that same Wei Wuxian opens his eyes in another body and everything that was supposed to stay in the past starts again.
6. Heaven Official’s Blessing (TGCF) - people either love its meandering narrative, picaresque structure and cast of thousands, or find it a detriment compared to much more compact MDZS. I love it even more than MDZS for those very qualities. It does have a rock-solid, darling OTP, but what really elevates it to me are the MXTX trademark combo of snarky/light tone hiding a ton of trauma underneath, the insanely intricate world-building, and what it has to say about the nature of grace and goodness. Xie Lian is one of my top 5 web novel characters and probably in top 10 from anywhere. Oh, and while MXTX’s stuff is not as angsty for me as Meatbun’s or even Priest’s, there are always exceptions, and there is one chapter in this novel that pretty much broke me and sometimes I still flashback to it and feel unwell.
Anyway, what is it about? There is a commotion in the heavenly realm - Xie Lian, the Crown Prince of a long-destroyed kingdom, has ascended to Godhood. That in itself is not so exciting. However for Xie Lian this is the third time (!!!!) as he’s ascended and lost his godhood twice prior. And now, the biggest joke of the divine realm is back, throwing the heavenly realm into chaos. And elsewhere, Hua Cheng, one of the four most powerful demons of that Universe, sits up and takes notice.
5. Golden Stage - my perfect comfort novel. Probably the least angsty of any danmei novel on this list (which still means plenty angsty :P) It also has a dedicated, smart OTP that is an OTP for the bulk of the book - I think you will notice that in most of the novels in this list, I go for “OTP against the world” trope - I can’t stand love triangles and the same. Anyway, Fu Shen, is a famous general whose fame is making the emperor antsy. When he gets injured and can’t walk any more, the emperor gladly recalls him and marries him off to his most faithful court lackey, the head of sort of secret police, Yan Xiaohan. The emperor intends it both as a check on the general and a general spite move since the two men always clash in court whenever they meet. But not all is at is seems. They used to be friends a long time ago, had a falling out, and one of the loveliest parts of the novel is them finding their way to each other, but there is also finding the middle path between their two very different philosophies and ways of being, not to mention solving a conspiracy or dozen, and putting a new dynasty on the throne, among other things. It always makes me think, a little, of “if Mei Changsu x Jingyan were canon.”
4. Sha Po Lang - if you like a lot of fantasy politics and world-building and steampunk with your novels, this one is for you. This one is VERY plot-heavy with smart, dedicated characters and a deconstruction of many traditional virtues - our protagonist Chang Geng, a long-lost son of the Emperor, is someone who wants to modernize the country but also take down the current emperor his brother for progress’ sake and the person he’s in love with is the general who saved him when he was a kid who is nominally his foster father. Anyway, the romance is mainly a garnish in this one, not even a big side dish, but the relationship between two smart, dedicated, deadly individuals with very different concepts of duty is fascinating long before it turns romantic. And if you like angst, while overall it’s not as angsty as e.g., Meatbun stuff, Chang Geng’s childhood is the stuff of nightmares and probably freaks me out more than anything else in any novel on this list, 2ha included.
3. To Rule In a Turbulent World (LSWW) - gay Minglan. No seriously. This is how I think of it. it’s a slice of life period novel with fascinating characters and setting that happens to have a gay OTP, not a romance in a period setting per se and I always prefer stories where the romance is not the only thing that is going on. It’s meticulously written and smart and deals with character development and somehow makes daily minutia fascinating. Our protagonist, You Miao, is the son of a fabulously wealthy merchant, sent to the capital to make connections and study. As the story starts, he sees his friend’s servants beating someone to death, feels bad, and buys him because, as we discover gradually and organically, You Miao may be wealthy and occasionally immature but he is a genuinely good person. The person he buys is a barbarian from beyond the wall, named Li Zhifeng. It’s touch and go if the man will survive but eventually he does and You Miao, who by then has to return home, gives him his papers and lets him go. However, LZF decides to stick with You Miao instead, both out of sense of debt for YM saving his life and because he genuinely likes him (and yet, there is no instalove on either of their parts, their bodies have fun a lot quicker than their souls.) Anyway, the two take up farming, get involved in the imperial exams and it’s the life of prosperity and peace, until an invasion happens and things go rapidly to hell. This is so nuanced, so smart (smart people in this actually ARE!) and has secondary characters who are just as complex as the mains (for example, I ended up adoring YM’s friend, the one who starts the plot by almost beating LZF to death for no reason) because the novel never forgets that few people are all villain. There is a lovely character arc or two - watching YM grow up and LZF thaw - there is the fact that You Miao is a unicorn in web novels being laid back and calm. This whole thing is a masterpiece.
2. Stains of Filth (Yuwu) - want the emotional hit of 2ha but want to read something half its length? Well, the author of 2ha is here to eviscerate you in a shorter amount of time. This has the beautiful world-building, plot twists that all make sense and, at the center of it all, an intense and all-consuming and gloriously painful relationship between two generals - one aristocratic loner Mo Xi, and the other gregarious former slave general Gu Mang. Once they were best friends and lovers, but when the novel starts, Gu Mang has long turned traitor and went to serve the enemy kingdom and has now been returned and Mo Xi, who now commands the remnants of his slave army, has to cope with the fact that he has never been able to get over the man who stabbed him through the heart. Literally. This novel has a gorgeously looping structure, with flashbacks interwoven into present storyline. There is so much love and longing and sacrifice in this that I am tearing up a bit just thinking of it. If you don’t love Mo Xi and Gu Mang, separately and together, by the end of it, you have no soul.
1. The Dumb Husky and His White Cat Shizun (2ha/erha) - if you’ve been following my tumblr for more than a hot second, you know my obsession with this novel. Honestly, even if I were to make a list of my top 10 novels of any kind, not just webnovels, this would be on the list. It has everything I want - a complicated, intricate plot with an insane amount of plot twists, all of which are both unexpected and make total sense, a rich and large cast of characters, a truly epic OTP that makes me bawl, emotional intensity that sometimes maxes even me out and so much character nuance and growth. Also, Moran is my favorite web novel character ever, hands down.
Anyway, the plot (or at least the way it first appears) is that the evil emperor of the cultivation world, Taxian Jun, kills himself at 32 and wakes up in the body of his 16 year old self, birth name Moran. Excited to get a redo, Moran wants to save his supposed true love Shimei, whose death the last go-around pushed him towards evil. He also wants to avoid entanglement with Chu Wanning, his shizun and sworn enemy in past life. And that’s all you are best off knowing, trust me. The only hint I am going to give is oooh boy the mother of all unreliable narrators has arrived!
The novel starts light and funny on boil the frog principle - if someone told me I would be full bawling multiple times with this novel, I’d have thought they were insane, but i swear my eyes hurt by the end of it. I started out being amused and/or disliking the mains and by the end I would die for either of them.

I found out a curious little thing;
I don't know how many of you are familiar with the 16 personalisty types; I've came across this concept a few years ago, and since then one of the ways to kill my time was looking up book/TV/movie characters and making a list of characters that have the same personality typa as me, which of them have the same type as my family members, which of them have the same type as my frineds...
And of course I looked up MXTX characters as well. (For example I found out that I have the same personality type as Xie Lian (I swear I would never expect such a blessing/honor, I've never had the same personality type as the main character until now), and what I found most interesting was, that while my father has the same personality type as Jiang Fengmian, my mom share the personality type with Yu Ziyuan (& Jiang Cheng & Nie Mingjue)... (...and then there's also my ex, who's Bai Wuxiang, lol 😅😭)
(Please note that the fact that these chracters share a personality type doesn't mean that their personalities are exactly the same)
And yes, the similarities in personality are extremely visible, especially with my mom... I don't know whether I should laugh or cry 😅 ...I certainly find it quite interesting tho
Also when I put this up on fb, people in comments were asking me what characters are what personality type so I put together a list, here, if you know your personality type, you can locate characters that share it with you 👇
(Also, if you don't know your personality type, ypu can find out here: https://www.16personalities.com/)
(Note: don’t expect to find your personality in each book)

Here is more happiness:
- Hua Cheng has never played a game in his fucking life. He refuses to play until he's seen Xie Lian play and then he mops the floor w everyone. But he won't even touch Xie Lian. They are not on teams but somehow Hua Cheng hasnt hit him once. Then right at the end he'll just "die" at the first hit Xie Lian gives him
- Xie Lian mains kirby or the pokemon trainer and he's fucking insufferable bcs he swears he's not upset about losing but you can see the light leaving his eyes with every time he dies
- He Xuan is only playing because shi qingxuan won't let him leave without trying it at least once. He complains the entire time and stands in the corner but then he realizes he'll have to play more if he doesn't try. So he kills Shi Qingxuan only and then walks off the stage IMMEDIATELY after and begs to get food on the way home
- Shi Qingxuan is tired of He Xuan's shit and plays fucking ness and spams with absolutely no remorse
- Lang Qianqiu plays either sheik, fox, or pit. He kins them. He does not want items. He wants Xie Lian and Qi Rong to battle him with full seriousness and he doesn't shut up until they do
- Qi Rong gave Lang Qianqiu the bad controller. He gave Xie Lian the bad controller. He gave everyone else the controllers that Gu Zi broke when they first got it and then he uses the best controller in the house. He does not care if they cry. He is going to absolutely slaughter them.
- Nan Feng and Fu Yao are horrible. They picked the same character and different maps. They screamed for an hour over the fucking music and physically fought over the character. They wanted all the items. Nan Feng throws Fu Yao's controller so he'll win. Fu Yao literally lunges at him. The wii is broken, Gu Zi is mortified, god is dead, and now they are rolling on the floor.
Honorable Mentions:
- Ban Yue does not know how to play at all. She ends up being taught by Gu Zi. She mains Princess Peach but specifically the purple outfit and she smiles every time she gets to use the smash ball. Xie Lian loses to her purposely, Nan Fen and Fu Yao almost kill each other trying to slaughter her, and Hua Cheng scoffs.
- Gu Zi does not play. All he does is stand menacingly in the corner with the swear jar in hand. He threatens to tax everyone there. Fu Yao challenges him. He loses. The swear jar gains at least 200 more by the end of the day.

Favorite Chinese Drama Pairs 2021
Tumblr media
Because I have been deep into Chinese (mostly) dramas this year, and they tend to be heavy on tropes and relationships (and angst/pain), I find myself with hundreds of screenshots of (mostly) pairings depicting both romance and friendship. Here are the ones that have made 2021 bearable (not all are from 2021 shows).
There are definite spoilers here but pretty sure no one is reading this.
Romantic Pairs
Gao BingZhu and Wu SiYue from Luoyang / Fēng Qǐ Luò Yáng
Tumblr media
Thanks to Luoyang being fast-paced and not overly tropey, this romance worked extremely well for me. A bit of a slow burn with moments of angst, given how much their lives were thrown into chaos by both foes and friends. The chemistry was there from the start and progressed logically, but quietly, never overshadowing the actual storyline. I really love them both, they are hands down my favorite couple of the year. And that is why I’m still not over it, dammit. I’ll never be over it. I love bittersweet but what’s up with the tragic? I swear I’ve watched way more tragic endings in Chinese dramas than not. And I’m not ok with it.
Wen KeXing and Zhou Zishou aka WenZhou from Word of Honor / Shan He Ling / Tian Ya Ke
Tumblr media
I had/have so many unsatisfied thoughts at the end of the series, but it’s still a show that I enjoy rewatching. Really enjoy. The dialog and expressions on these actors’ faces speaks volumes. The show is somewhat messy, though (for cultural/political reasons) and left me ranting about stupid plot holes. Reading the book filled in a few of the holes, but because the adaptation of the show veered quite a bit, there were still some very unsatisfactory threads. Overall, though, the main relationship, costumes, feel, basic story, and relationships between so many of the minor characters makes me extremely happy. WenZhou forever.
Lan WangJi and Wei WuXian aka WangXian from The Untamed / Chen Qing Ling / Mo Dao Zu Shi
Tumblr media
WangXian will probably be one of my favorite pairings ever, up there with Han & Leia. I will always have misgivings about near-obsessive personalities, but WangJi is a logical, externally reserved, protective kinda guy that carries a torch forever (apparently, I love that) and despite - or maybe because of - some less astute moments in his youth, he is my favorite type of character. The only thing that annoys me about the show/series/book is that the characters are (mostly) so young, and I am an old, old lady, so I have less tolerance for some of the silliness caused by themselves. I think that’s why I might prefer the WenZhou relationship more: they are older and Seen Some Shit, which makes them far less silly (and more flirty).
Gu Xiang and Cao WeiNing from  Word of Honor / Shan He Ling / Tian Ya Ke
Tumblr media
I fell in love with A-Xiang the minute we met her, and the same with WeiNing. I’ll never be over it, you hear me? Never. Precious cinnamon rolls forever!!!
Xie Lian and Hua Cheng / San Lang aka HuaLian from Heaven Official’s Blessing / Tian Guan Ci Fu
Tumblr media
I really enjoyed Xie Lian’s slow realization of his feelings, even though Hua Cheng’s obsession somewhat bothers me. However, since the obsession is in the protection trope vein, I’m generally ok with it. I don’t find either Xie Lian or Hua Cheng overly deep or intriguing, but that also was refreshing. I do think they are the most outwardly romantic pair from MXTX’s three major novels - and I actually appreciated the fact that she didn’t try to write more of the simply awful sex scenes that made their ways into Scum-Villain’s Self-Saving System and Mo Dao Zu Shi. No shame meant on writing pwp or any (consensual) sex, but I still shudder at how painfully awful those were. In contrast, the night-long “transfer of energy” scene in Qiangdeng Temple was pretty sexy.
QingQing and Xue QianXun from Miss The Dragon / Yulong
Tumblr media
Miss The Dragon / Yulong was a decent enough story, and the visuals were nice, but the main couple were just ok. It was the side-story couple that made me look forward to finishing the series. Without a doubt, it was a more tragic and better resolved storyline. Again, see my favorite kind of character: the logical, emotionally reserved Xue QianXun. QingQing was also adorable.
Jing Beiyuan and Wu Xi from Qi Ye / Lord Seventh (screencap from Word of Honor / Shan He Ling)
Tumblr media
I am including this one even though I don’t really feel that Jing Beiyuan and Wu Xi are on the same page, and that bothers me. Yet I adore Wu Xi for his ability to cut through all Beiyuan’s bullshit, and I do love a reincarnation story. However, I think I prefer their relationship depicted in Word of Honor much more than the book. Qi Ye wasn’t a bad read, but it is yet another danmei book that follows the obsessive and submissive path, which is not really my cup of tea. It doesn’t hurt that Fan JinWei looks like a cinnamon roll that can kill you.
Non-Romance Pairs
QingMing and BoYa from Yin Yang Master: Dream of Eternity
Tumblr media
I will take these two as soulmate friends thank you very much. The actors depicted the characters so well and so connected, I do not need the characters to be romantic (though the production clearly toed that line). They are so satisfying as they are. I am actually mulling over a short fic that places them firmly in “devoted to you forever” friend land, but not exactly sure where to go with it. The movie is beautiful, which helps me overlook all the flaws. It also didn’t hurt that the demon servants/spirit guardians were often depicted as if right out of my young Goth daydreams (long hair, sharp cheekbones, skirts, makeup/eyeliner, jfc hand me that fan I’m getting the vapors).
Wen Ning and Lan Sizhui from The Untamed / Chen Qing Ling / Mo Dao Zu Shi & The Living Dead
Tumblr media
Best boys, best cousins, I have the softest spot in my heart for Ghost General Wen Ning and sweet, empathetic, smart Lan Sizhui. I want to pinch and kiss their cheeks and pat them on their heads and tuck them into bed. I will protecc these little babies with my life.
Shi QingXuan and Ming Yi aka BeefLeaf from Heaven Official’s Blessing / Tian Guan Ci Fu
Tumblr media
To be honest, this side relationship was more intriguing to me than the main couple’s relationship. I would love to read an entire book about Ming Yi / He Xuan from his POV. I know folks ship these two as romantic partners but for me, there is too much baggage/backstory to feel comfortable about that. However, I do like to think that in all the time that the two have known each other, Ming Yi might not outright hate Shi QingXuan and grudgingly kinda miss him/her/they. Still doesn’t excuse what horror he caused.
Prince Bo and Prince Chuan from The Wolf
Tumblr media
I loved that while these two were rivals, they still helped each other and felt a kinship/bond despite all the reasons they should hate each other. I wasn’t happy with the main couple’s resolution, but did like the promise of a better resolution for Prince Chuan. And when either of the actors smile, it’s like a beautiful day.
