Results came in, movie sonic x tgcf on the way!
Lore: it’s pretty much the same, but because the characters are going to be humanoid I’ll add a little backstory to the planet “Xian le”
Characters: This is what I’ve come up with so far, commentary and suggestions welcome!
Sonic-Xie Lian
Amy-Hua Cheng
Tails-Mu Qing
Knuckles-Fengxin
Donut Lord-He Xuan
Pretzel Lady-Shi Qing Xuan
Rachel- Shi WuDu
Randell-Pei Ming
Jojo- banyue
Shadow-Qi Rong (he’s going to be a little ooc but the image in my head is so cool!)
Maria-Gu Zi
Walter’s-Lan Qianqiu (he’s gonna die lol)
Wade-Quan yizhen
That one g.u.n. Lady I always forget the name of-ling wen
Now my main problem is figuring out who is going to be eggman, Gerald, stone, and longclaw. I originally thought about making longclaw xie lian’s mother and MNQ stone, but eggman just doesn’t fit jun wu(I mean I could make it work but I just can’t see it) and I don’t know who Gerald would be +that still leaves yin yu. I could also use lang ying as eggman, jun wu as Gerald, mei nian qing as longclaw, and just have yin yu married to QYZ. IDK what do you guys think?

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) Masterpost
Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) is a Vocal synth (Vocaloid and SynthV) music project. It consists of songs themed around different figures throughout Chinese history. The project is a collaboration between different artists and creatives, with music and videos featuring prominent traditional Chinese elements. The project's title translates to "The Records of Magnificence of the Wangchuan" - In Chinese mythology, "Wangchuan" (or River of Forgetting) is a river in the Underworld that can rid one of their past life's memories, similar to the river Lethe.
A mobile game adaptation has also been developed by NetEast. Unfortunately, I haven't played it so I can't give much insight on it. However, I assume that its premise is similar to that of the idea behind the project as a whole: all these historical figures meeting each other in the Underworld after they died. Maybe.
You can find all the songs on Bilibili. The official Weibo can be found here. The game's website, which includes all characters appearing so far in the game, can be found here, and its Weibo can be found here.
(If you prefer YouTube, I've also put together a handy playlist. Please know that most of these videos are reposts though, so please watch the original Bilibili MVs if you can!)
This blog is where I will be posting everything I feel like I need to say about the songs in this project. A lot of it is lifted from my Twitter account but will be in much more detail. Note that I probably won't touch collab songs, or songs that don't focus solely on the project's own characters.
Disclaimer: I do not speak Chinese, nor am I an expert on Chinese history. Therefore, I cannot reliably translate the lyrics to these songs, nor my words should be taken as gospel. I am merely a nerd gushing about my hyperfixation.

The Last Immortal
I just finished the Royal Rumors and now when I am watching this one, I encountered the actor who played ML in Blossom too omg. Oh Yuan Shanjian.... Finished the first episode, I wld hv to disagree with what A'Yin said at the start...
Sure that immortal killed his beloved but he had to killed her bcs she was the one who started the war between immortal and demon. Just want to say long time ago I watched a clip of when Gu Jin fought with Ling Feng and was saved by Feng Yin.
Ep2: I think I watched the part where A'Yin hatched from egg too a bit.
Ep7: I think both of A'Yin and Gu Jin had the same problems. They like to help other people at the cost of their own lives. Both will backfired as what we knew from the first episode and how dishonest Hua Shu was.
Ep8: I'll say it... What a bitch Hua Shu was, two-faced bitch too.
Ep9: AGHHH FKG BUSYBODY QING YIN OMG now that bitch gonna get that sparkling crown that easily.
Ep10: Finally... The deceit was revealed and props to Gu Jin for that move, making that peacock king changed the treaty agreement. OMG GU JIN CALLED THAT BITCH OUT ON HER LIES AND JUST CUT ANY RELATIONSHIP EVEN FRIENDSHIP. WAITTTT XIUYAN?? It didn't even click in my mind about the Xiuyan tower until I saw his face omg
Ep11: at the end, the misunderstanding trope was really well used there ughhhhh. Immature.
Ep12: luckily they solved it. Umm that uhh who was that girl... Ah! Yan Shuang, she was so nice. Thank goodness for her talk that stupid little fox didn't remove the protective bracelet. Aww they got married in mortal world. I DON'T CARE I NEED TO SEE FENG MING TO SUFFER MUCH MORE THAN XIAN ZHU.
Ep18: This drama was good at making your blood pressure rise huh. Like everything was impossible. A'Yin was too young and naive to deduce there might be reasons why the Xian shan and zhu separated Gu Jin and her. She shld ask for explanation. Gu Jin was too nice for his own good bcs it looks like it was so easy for two faced bitch Hua Shu to ensnare him. It was really looking the immortal realm was heading toward an unavoidable wreck. OK he was tough against her manipulation. That was good.
Ep19: thinking about the start of the first episode... They both were like ill-fated you know.
Ep20: it was no use for Lang Feng to take that punishment, Hua Shu wld be a villainess sooner or later I'm sure. Well...
Ep21: I don't like Hua Shu at all, for Lan Feng sake I'm praying for their happiness but nooooo WTF?!!!! Wld this be her villain origin story or what?? OK I'm suspecting it was Qing Lin and her cohorts like Feng Ming... I'm sure. I fear... Qing Lin used Hong Yi body to kill Lan Feng oh my god. When will all this gonna end???
Ep22: noooo Xian zhan and Xian shuuu nooooooo.
Ep23: Now I get it why A'Yin was his tribulation and how Daze Mountain came forward in case of anything. Now.....
Ep24: one thing I want to say, I want that Lady Hong Chuo getting slap so hard. Sooo many lost... And only one win. Yuan Qi guess was sooooo close. How can Hong Yi didn't remember how unrecognisable was his aunt?!! Ahhh. Yikes another L.
Ep25: fkg stupid emotional Hong Yi aghhhhh I WANT QING LIN TO SUFFER THOUSAND TORTUROUS DEATH!!! That peacock king and fang ming too needs to die being tortured slowly!! If those two motherfuckers didn't get BIG PUNISHMENTS FOR WHAT THEY DID I WILL DOWNVOTE THIS DRAMA TO HELL! They don't deserve easy death.
Ep27: Yan Shuang deserved better man, we know that. She also knew how.... he was not really available. Poor Yan Shuang. Finally we were back on track. Wait was that fire jade whatever with immortal spirit of Feng Yin had been restored??? I mean being out back into the pagoda?? Like what happened to Feng Ming all this time?? Hoping so hard that A'Yu wld not be another love rival, please just be loyal sister!!! Now the moment we were waiting for omg. Sooo Feng Yin had gone through so many tribulation plus with her scattered immortal spirits that it developed her detached character. She remembered everything she said?? Ouu I can't wait to see how that Lady Hong Chuo will hv her eyes bulge and her tongue swallowed when she will meet Feng Yin.
Ep28: I think Feng Yin achieved demigod partly bcs of Yuan Qi that time tried to revive the blood lotus with his god spirit and power. Oh so with Feng Yin memories intact and her true face in disguise/concealed, I hope she can find out the moles. THEY WERE SOOOO CLOSE BUT SOOOO FAR OMG even the soul mark was triggered. AT LAST FINALLY YUAN QI GOT TO KNOW THAT IT WAS FENG YIN WHO HELPED HIM WHEN LING FENG HURT HIM AND HUA SHU LIES WAS EXPOSED!! Oh he was curious curious.
Ep29: Tsk tsk tsk she can't help but mentioned everything that was familiar to her and that was the things A'Yin wld know. Please it needs to click in her head that Feng Ming was the one who did all those horrible things years agooo
Ep30: Her and Xiuyan really old friends like they had been interacting for thousand years. PLEASE LET ALL THAT BITCH HUA SHU DECEITS EXPOSED SPREAD TOWARD THE IMMORTAL REALM PLEASEEE AND HOW YUAN QI TOLD HER TO GET LOST TOO. At last, Feng Yin revealed her real self to Yuan Qi. Xiuyan and the three life stone must be so glad to see her. Yan Shuang moment with Feng Yin awwww. Nahh here came Hong Yi... I'm sorry Yan Shuang you had to fall for this unworthy man. He can't blame her for being indifferent coz he did the worst after he ascended. I hope Yan Shuang will not turn evil just bcs that worthless man didn't like him back pleaseee I'm begging. We need our badass queen that knows how to move on and will get better man. I want to say what's the rush to make her forgive him when it was horrible things happened to her but I understand Yuan Qi didn't hv much time. What about that cloud mirror thing huh??
Ep31: I approve that new man yeayy go YAN SHUANG GOOO!! That Lady Hong Chuo can fck off, what a bad person that ascended to "God" realm. That scene when Hong Yi dreamed of Yan Shuang made me think of "Boys only want love if it's torture" now that she didn't want to meet him anymore, he missed her. He didn't even realise when he likes her or fell for her huh.
Ep32: idk how many times I said finally BUT YEAH FINALLY THEY CAN UNCOVER WHAT REALLY HAPPENED THEN!!. Unfortunately they didn't see the part where Hua Mo was the one who killed Lan Feng and stole the sword too. The eagle king wanted Hong Yi to prove him wrong and instead show that he love Yan Shuang but that stupid little fox omg. OK Yuan Qi was cool for the whole made the groom drunk and robbed the bride. Love their bridal robe, gown and headgears.
Ep33: in case anyone didn't notice, Hong Yi was one dense mf omg. Why Feng Yin didn't want to tell him that Yan Shuang actually liked him? I support Chang Que wholeheartedly, he was always supportive of Yuan Qi. Thank goodness Yuan Qi was the one who gave some advices to Hong Yi.
Ep35: the start of this episode... Finally. A bit satisfying hmm... Feng Yin was kind to not punish Lady Hong Chuo. OK satisfied after what Yuan Qi said to her. Well at least she was loyal to Yuan Qi and more than happy to tell Feng Yin the length Yuan Qi went to save A'Yin bcs he loves her so much. Feng Yin needs to know all the sacrifices he made. That didn't even include what he did at the Nether realm. SO HAPPY FOR THEM AND THIS TIME THEY EVEN GOT MARRIED SOOOOO
Ep36: See... That bitch wld not change her nature. Like father like daughter and now he successfully roped his daughter to the devil side. More like push. Oh nooo A'Yu. Can't wait until that bitch discovered that it was her father who killed her beloved. As for Hong Yi... She waited for you for a THOUSAND years but you realised it too late. Yeah you need to let her go. Did Yuan Qi seriously going to confront that villain Hua Mo alone??? Like he needs to learn how to pick his battle. He was not in prime condition at all.
Ep37: oh Lian Xian you amazing man. You know how to move on and be supportive. I'll always cheer for you. I don't feel positive for the good side tbh. That Ming Qi combines with devil Hua Shu.... Like all the good side heroes were not in good condition except for Feng Yin. Both Yan Shuang and Hong Yi were just recovered. Qing Yi debuted new look and looking good. Finally she got to know about what he did in the Nether realm.
Ep38: the way I knew that Feng Yin will use Yuan Qi "make em drunk" trick against him to go into the abyss without him knowing. Oh well ofc he was quick to discover it. FINALLY YAN SHUANG AND HONG YI OMG.
Ep39: we gonna see the anticipated duel of Feng Yin against Hua Shu ig. When will they tell Hua Shu that it was his father who killed Lan Feng with Qing Lin??? Yes I will say it again. FINALLY THEY TOLD HER!! That was a nice villain character redeemed(?) arc for Hua Shu. So, only 4 of them against Ming Qi? What the other immortals were doing? Fending the fort in their own place?? OK five now including Ao Ge.
Ep40: tbh I get why he did that. No other choice other than sacrificing himself for the safety of Feng Yin and the world. The soul mark... Did she still hv it?? The earrings of Yan Shuang when she got married was so pretty. Love everything about her wedding with Hong Yi. That was a good ending with closure to all important characters.

Romance in MXTX, Priest, and SHL
MXTX: Flower, Wine and Dreamworld
The romance in MXTX's works is like flower that grows in ice and snow; colorful, bright and hopelessly romantic, blossoms in misery and hardships.
It features a distinct "us against the world" mindset, depicting love as the only constant in the world. It's an eternal "dreamworld" detached from worldly matters, the perfect escapism as well as a source of strengths in the face of cruel reality.
Both MDZS and TGCF are a critique of mob mentality.
The contrast between CQL and MDZS is very interesting. While the former ends with LWJ taking charge, and therefore changing the world for the better, the novel ends with wangxian isolating themselves from grand politics and focusing more on helping individuals as recluse. It has an essentially pessimistic attitude towards the morality & intelligence of the collective.
TGCF takes a slightly more optimistic approach, featuring the crowd being courageous under the right circumstances. However, both works share a similar undertone: putting one’s absolute faith in the collective is dangerous, whereas unconditional trust and devotion can be only found in one-to-one connection
MXTX herself compares MDZS and TGCF to 花间一壶酒 (A cup of wine among flowers), MDZS being the wine and TGCF being flower. She also compares MDZS to 风雪夜归人, the person returning home from snow and wind, and TGCF to 红泥小火炉, a small red furnace.
Priest: Breezing Wind and Burning Iron
The romance in priest's works is more complicated. It's the most gentle in its normal state, when it is rational and collected, in which case it's like the breezing wind, soothing, sweet and light-hearted. It gives the individuals more incentive to achieve their individual and/or societal vision, as well as more reason to value their own lives & well-being.
In Faraway Wanderers, the most distinct feature of WenZhou relationship is how in naturally sync they are, and how comfortable & smooth their dynamic is. They both have past burden, but it doesn’t matter, because they bring simple joy, understanding and happiness in each other’s lives.
In Sha Po Lang and The Guardian, the ML’s lingering love for the MC motivates them to become better version of themselves, to care about others, and to form a holistic vision about bettering society.
In The Defective, Lin Jingheng(MC) explicitly said that Lu Bixing(ML) is the only meaning in his life. He had little incentive to care about his own life after his revenge plan fell apart. LBX helped him reconnect with his inner idealism, and gave him a reason value his life.
When the passion and fiery energy manifests itself, however, the romance is like burning iron, blood and fire. It isn’t actually toxic or unhealthy, but it's not pure and innocent either; in this case, it strives for something deeper and more intense, never content with the past or the present. The sheer intensity of relationship is like a double-edged sword, walking the fine line between unconditional devotion and dangerous obsession.
SHL: Spring Water and Healing Open Wounds
The romance in SHL is like "spring water"; it's warm, gentle, nurturing. It breaks through the boundary between individuals to bring the couple closer to each other, taking them back to a utopia of their childhood dream, away from social pressure and responsibility. The theme central to their relationship is “salvation”: how love is able to bring people back to integrity.
Both drama wkx and drama zzs have lots of regret about their past sins and wrongdoings. Four Seasons Manor is essentially a metaphor for purity, acceptance and the safety of childhood home. How to make drama wkx open up and accept this safe harbor as his home is one of the most significant plot-lines of the show.
SHL couple is way more emotionally vulnerable and expressive. A significant part of SHL arc is healing the wounds in an open and honest way. They cuddle and confide in each other way more often, talk about their shameful past and even cry about their regrets in front of one another, which is very rare among MXTX/Priest works.
The heat of the relationship sometimes gets too hot and even burns; in other words, there are constant miscommunications, conflicts and misunderstandings in the relationship. However, they can never let each other go, because it's the only source of warmth left for them in their hopeless lives filled with regrets and guilt.
Similarities and Differences
*Note that this is not a SHL/TYK comparison. TYK is kind of an “unorthodox” priest novel; you will know what I mean if you have read 3+ of her works.
Relationship Dynamic & Narrative:
In MXTX’s works, the concept of “romance” itself is divined; and the characters are illustration of the ideal of “undying love”. People are made for one another, to complete one another. Her works use colorful symbolism (silver butterflies, the emperor’s smile, the 3 thousand lanterns, etc.) to depict this romanticized ideal of love.
For MXTX, the romanticization of “destined love” is one of the most recurring themes of her novels. Therefore, the readers look at their relationship through rose-color glasses. Obsession is usually framed in a jolly & romantic light, and doesn’t feature much tension or stress, and has less negative or unhealthy undertone.
In most of priest’s works and SHL, soulmates are not born but made, so they have to figure out how their relationship works step by step. Therefore the narrative is less of a “rosy picture”.
Priest has a habit of using derogatory terms to describe relationships that are mostly healthy, but somewhat “bloody” and edgy, full of excessive passion and obsession. The most common phrase is “爱生忧怖”, a Buddhist term meaning “love results in worry and fear”.
SHL obviously has to be more subtle in expressing love. That said, drama WenZhou are way more emotionally vulnerable and expressive than their novel counterparts, as well as most Priest & MXTX characters. They have a dramatic falling out once in a while, even towards the end. They barely fit the Chinese definition of Zhiji (to know me/to understand one another), but are “lovers” who are buried deep in their passion instead.
Past, Future and Evolvement:
In SHL, characters are encouraged to treasure past impressions that are thrown in figurative “wrappings”, whose luster is derived from age-old experiences (Psychological Types, Carl Jung). In other words, they are encouraged to root their love in a shared past, a Utopia of innocence.
The contrast between The Defective and Word of Honor is very interesting to observe. Both involve long separation, and the suffering and personality changes hat comes from it. SHL narrative frames their innocent childhood as something to cling to and return to. Drama WKX is encouraged to accept his identity as Four Seasons Manor disciple because it was part of his childhood past. This is a significant part of drama WenZhou relationship.
In The Defective, the narrative doesn't encourage the couple to dwell on the past that much. On the contrary, the all-knowing AI explicitly discouraged the MC from “comparing past to present”. They are advised to accept changes, however painful it might be, and build a better, more equal dynamic out of it, evolving from one-sided pandering to fighting side-by-side.
In Priest’s novels, the characters rarely return to something in the past, but look into the future. Change is usually framed as inherently beneficial, albeit usually painful and rocky, the implication being that you need to constantly strive for something better.
Sha Po Lang is a good example of this, with Gu Yun’s changing attitude towards Chang Geng after he as he matures, gradually showing his intelligence in politics. CG starts referring to GY as Zixi instead of YiFu is also a sign of this change---to see him as equal rather than a parental figure & protector.
The Defective is even more obvious in this regard, with both parties uncomfortable with the change initially, but gradually adjusting to the changes during their 16-year separation. The ML also stops calling MC by his surname “Lin”, as a sign of viewing him as equal.
In MXTX’s works, change in personality or relationship dynamic is neither framed as painful or good. It just happens. It’s a natural flow that take place when it does. Their relationships are rarely challenged by change. They are objectively at a better place compared to their past, but it’s merely the result of a series of events rather than a deliberate choice or struggle.
WangXian’s relationship naturally changes over time after WWX’s rebirth, but neither of them really struggles with the change.
Xie Lian doesn’t even recognize Hua Cheng as the someone from his past, so they start out as friends getting to know each other.
Salvation and Changing one another:
Priest herself stated in an interview that she doesn’t believe in the concept of salvation, since people have the inner capacity to be their own savior. Therefore, priest characters usually don’t actively try to change their partner’s morals or personality. Some might be willingly influenced by their partner, but there’s rarely an element of moral condemnation. Even when there is a conflict between different values, the options are 1) to reconcile them by choosing the middle ground 2) to maintain their independence and tackle it with nuance 3) to break up.
On surface level, Mo Du/Silent Reading is about Luo Wenzhou being Fei Du’s salvation. However, as LWZ pointed out himself, Fei Du would’ve been a good person at heart with or without his influence.
In The Defective, when Lu Bixing mistakenly thought Lin Jingheng stayed in the Eighth Galaxy against his own wishes because of their relationship, and that their priorities are irreconcilable, he even thought about breaking up. Of course he was not serious about it, but this showcased that he would never try to change LJH’s convictions.
In SHL, however, the concept of salvation is central to the theme. Some find it strange that SHL make drama zzs the more “moral” one of the two, despite his action being more objectively questionable. In fact, the only reason he get framed as more “moral” is that he admitted his fault sooner, and therefore could guide drama wkx’s path back to salvation: to recognize the goodness in people, make peace with external world, to clear his name in Jianghu, and to follow due process with his revenge plan to avoid collateral damages.
“I tried to change you, but you end up changing me”, said drama ZZS. This relationship dynamic is never present in any of priest’s works I’ve read. Priest characters don’t *try* to change one another.
Does MXTX believe in salvation? Hard to tell. One could argue that Hua Cheng would have be way more amoral and even immoral if it hadn’t been for XL. This is complicated and is a topic for another time.
However, it is certain that MXTX MCs don’t condemn each other morally. “The orthodox one defending their unorthodox partner in front of the world” is a common wuxia trope, but the way MXTX novels approach it is very different from SHL.
HuaLian never had a serious falling out about being on different sides. Even when they disagree, they respect each other and love each other exactly the way they are. Hua Cheng didn’t approve of Xie Lian saving Mu Qing, but he didn’t interfere with Xie Lian’s decision. Xie Lian feels responsible for helping Shi Qingxuan in Blackwater arc, but he is perfectly fine with HC helping He Xuan keep secrets. In several cases where they have different values, they are able to make it work with ease.
LWJ never *morally* condemned WWX for his action, and never once objected to WWX practicing demonic cultivation after his rebirth. In fact, LWJ never objected to WWX’s morals; in their previous life he was worried about his safety, and struggled with what to do about certain situations due to his family background, but difference in morality is not an issue for them.
The “righteous” one does not feel the need to guide their unorthodox partner or to be their salvation with regards to integrity.
*The similarity & differences part is a bit messy and some points are not fleshed-out. Sorry about that.
**I don’t claim to have the right interpretation. The lens by which we see different styles of romance is ultimately subjective.

Mousie’s absolutely subjective, very biased Top 10 web novels list
Please note that this is hardly aiming to be objective, if one can even be properly objective about a work of fiction. It is 110% based on my preferences, which means this list is heavy on the angst and has nothing set in the modern day. It is also heavily danmei-centric, even though I read way more het romance than danmei, because for whatever reason, most of the danmei I’ve read has been insanely good.
10. Return of the Swallow - one of the two non-danmeis on this list. Smart and nuanced and with a large cast of characters. Our heroine is a long-lost daughter of the family that is brought back in and has to cope with familial struggles, crazy royals, court intrigue, invasion et al. It’s SO GOOD! There is romance with the sexy smart enemy general but honestly, it’s the heroine that is the main selling point for me.
9. Transmigrator Meets Reincarnator - the only other non-danmei novel on this list, this was my very first web novel and what drew me into this insanity. This is just a ton of fun, probably the lightest novel on this list, not an ounce of angst to be found. But it’s hilarious and features competent heroine and tsundere hero and I will always love it for opening a new world to me. Anyway, our heroine transmigrates into the novel as the female lead. Unlike the original lead though she doesn’t want to seek adventures and angst - she just wants to comfortably live with the wealthy, nice husband heroine has. Alas, said husband is no longer nice since he has previously lived this story where he was betrayed by FL and then transmigrated/reincarnated into the past. Oh well, the heroine opens up businesses and makes friends. And eventually, her husband realizes his wife is way different this time around. This actually doesn’t have much romance, not until close to the end, but this is so fun I don’t care.
8. Lord Seventh - I am only partway through this so far, but it’s already on the list because it’s smart and somehow intense AND laid-back (not sure how this works, but it does) and is honestly just a really really solid and smart period novel, with the OTP a cherry on top of a narrative sundae. Plus, I love the concept of MC deciding he is not going for his supposedly fated love - he’s tried for six lifetimes, always with disaster, and he’s just plain done and tired. When he opens his life in his seventh reincarnation and sees the person he would have given up the world for, he genuinely feels nothing at all. (Spoiler - his OTP is actually a barbarian shaman this time around, thank you Lord!)
7. Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (MDZS) - oh come on, how are you even on this tumblr if you don’t know MDZS/The Untamed? This was my very first danmei and it’s so much fun! I love everything about it - the unreliable narrator, the looping structure, the main OTP, Wei Wuxian’s laidback, traumatized insouciance, everything. Anyway, the plot in the event you somehow transported here from 2005 is that the Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, Wei Wuxian, was defeated by the righteous sects over a decade ago and fell of a cliff to his death. Only now that same Wei Wuxian opens his eyes in another body and everything that was supposed to stay in the past starts again.
6. Heaven Official’s Blessing (TGCF) - people either love its meandering narrative, picaresque structure and cast of thousands, or find it a detriment compared to much more compact MDZS. I love it even more than MDZS for those very qualities. It does have a rock-solid, darling OTP, but what really elevates it to me are the MXTX trademark combo of snarky/light tone hiding a ton of trauma underneath, the insanely intricate world-building, and what it has to say about the nature of grace and goodness. Xie Lian is one of my top 5 web novel characters and probably in top 10 from anywhere. Oh, and while MXTX’s stuff is not as angsty for me as Meatbun’s or even Priest’s, there are always exceptions, and there is one chapter in this novel that pretty much broke me and sometimes I still flashback to it and feel unwell.
Anyway, what is it about? There is a commotion in the heavenly realm - Xie Lian, the Crown Prince of a long-destroyed kingdom, has ascended to Godhood. That in itself is not so exciting. However for Xie Lian this is the third time (!!!!) as he’s ascended and lost his godhood twice prior. And now, the biggest joke of the divine realm is back, throwing the heavenly realm into chaos. And elsewhere, Hua Cheng, one of the four most powerful demons of that Universe, sits up and takes notice.
5. Golden Stage - my perfect comfort novel. Probably the least angsty of any danmei novel on this list (which still means plenty angsty :P) It also has a dedicated, smart OTP that is an OTP for the bulk of the book - I think you will notice that in most of the novels in this list, I go for “OTP against the world” trope - I can’t stand love triangles and the same. Anyway, Fu Shen, is a famous general whose fame is making the emperor antsy. When he gets injured and can’t walk any more, the emperor gladly recalls him and marries him off to his most faithful court lackey, the head of sort of secret police, Yan Xiaohan. The emperor intends it both as a check on the general and a general spite move since the two men always clash in court whenever they meet. But not all is at is seems. They used to be friends a long time ago, had a falling out, and one of the loveliest parts of the novel is them finding their way to each other, but there is also finding the middle path between their two very different philosophies and ways of being, not to mention solving a conspiracy or dozen, and putting a new dynasty on the throne, among other things. It always makes me think, a little, of “if Mei Changsu x Jingyan were canon.”
4. Sha Po Lang - if you like a lot of fantasy politics and world-building and steampunk with your novels, this one is for you. This one is VERY plot-heavy with smart, dedicated characters and a deconstruction of many traditional virtues - our protagonist Chang Geng, a long-lost son of the Emperor, is someone who wants to modernize the country but also take down the current emperor his brother for progress’ sake and the person he’s in love with is the general who saved him when he was a kid who is nominally his foster father. Anyway, the romance is mainly a garnish in this one, not even a big side dish, but the relationship between two smart, dedicated, deadly individuals with very different concepts of duty is fascinating long before it turns romantic. And if you like angst, while overall it’s not as angsty as e.g., Meatbun stuff, Chang Geng’s childhood is the stuff of nightmares and probably freaks me out more than anything else in any novel on this list, 2ha included.
3. To Rule In a Turbulent World (LSWW) - gay Minglan. No seriously. This is how I think of it. it’s a slice of life period novel with fascinating characters and setting that happens to have a gay OTP, not a romance in a period setting per se and I always prefer stories where the romance is not the only thing that is going on. It’s meticulously written and smart and deals with character development and somehow makes daily minutia fascinating. Our protagonist, You Miao, is the son of a fabulously wealthy merchant, sent to the capital to make connections and study. As the story starts, he sees his friend’s servants beating someone to death, feels bad, and buys him because, as we discover gradually and organically, You Miao may be wealthy and occasionally immature but he is a genuinely good person. The person he buys is a barbarian from beyond the wall, named Li Zhifeng. It’s touch and go if the man will survive but eventually he does and You Miao, who by then has to return home, gives him his papers and lets him go. However, LZF decides to stick with You Miao instead, both out of sense of debt for YM saving his life and because he genuinely likes him (and yet, there is no instalove on either of their parts, their bodies have fun a lot quicker than their souls.) Anyway, the two take up farming, get involved in the imperial exams and it’s the life of prosperity and peace, until an invasion happens and things go rapidly to hell. This is so nuanced, so smart (smart people in this actually ARE!) and has secondary characters who are just as complex as the mains (for example, I ended up adoring YM’s friend, the one who starts the plot by almost beating LZF to death for no reason) because the novel never forgets that few people are all villain. There is a lovely character arc or two - watching YM grow up and LZF thaw - there is the fact that You Miao is a unicorn in web novels being laid back and calm. This whole thing is a masterpiece.
2. Stains of Filth (Yuwu) - want the emotional hit of 2ha but want to read something half its length? Well, the author of 2ha is here to eviscerate you in a shorter amount of time. This has the beautiful world-building, plot twists that all make sense and, at the center of it all, an intense and all-consuming and gloriously painful relationship between two generals - one aristocratic loner Mo Xi, and the other gregarious former slave general Gu Mang. Once they were best friends and lovers, but when the novel starts, Gu Mang has long turned traitor and went to serve the enemy kingdom and has now been returned and Mo Xi, who now commands the remnants of his slave army, has to cope with the fact that he has never been able to get over the man who stabbed him through the heart. Literally. This novel has a gorgeously looping structure, with flashbacks interwoven into present storyline. There is so much love and longing and sacrifice in this that I am tearing up a bit just thinking of it. If you don’t love Mo Xi and Gu Mang, separately and together, by the end of it, you have no soul.
1. The Dumb Husky and His White Cat Shizun (2ha/erha) - if you’ve been following my tumblr for more than a hot second, you know my obsession with this novel. Honestly, even if I were to make a list of my top 10 novels of any kind, not just webnovels, this would be on the list. It has everything I want - a complicated, intricate plot with an insane amount of plot twists, all of which are both unexpected and make total sense, a rich and large cast of characters, a truly epic OTP that makes me bawl, emotional intensity that sometimes maxes even me out and so much character nuance and growth. Also, Moran is my favorite web novel character ever, hands down.
Anyway, the plot (or at least the way it first appears) is that the evil emperor of the cultivation world, Taxian Jun, kills himself at 32 and wakes up in the body of his 16 year old self, birth name Moran. Excited to get a redo, Moran wants to save his supposed true love Shimei, whose death the last go-around pushed him towards evil. He also wants to avoid entanglement with Chu Wanning, his shizun and sworn enemy in past life. And that’s all you are best off knowing, trust me. The only hint I am going to give is oooh boy the mother of all unreliable narrators has arrived!
The novel starts light and funny on boil the frog principle - if someone told me I would be full bawling multiple times with this novel, I’d have thought they were insane, but i swear my eyes hurt by the end of it. I started out being amused and/or disliking the mains and by the end I would die for either of them.

I found out a curious little thing;
I don't know how many of you are familiar with the 16 personalisty types; I've came across this concept a few years ago, and since then one of the ways to kill my time was looking up book/TV/movie characters and making a list of characters that have the same personality typa as me, which of them have the same type as my family members, which of them have the same type as my frineds...
And of course I looked up MXTX characters as well. (For example I found out that I have the same personality type as Xie Lian (I swear I would never expect such a blessing/honor, I've never had the same personality type as the main character until now), and what I found most interesting was, that while my father has the same personality type as Jiang Fengmian, my mom share the personality type with Yu Ziyuan (& Jiang Cheng & Nie Mingjue)... (...and then there's also my ex, who's Bai Wuxiang, lol 😅😭)
(Please note that the fact that these chracters share a personality type doesn't mean that their personalities are exactly the same)
And yes, the similarities in personality are extremely visible, especially with my mom... I don't know whether I should laugh or cry 😅 ...I certainly find it quite interesting tho
Also when I put this up on fb, people in comments were asking me what characters are what personality type so I put together a list, here, if you know your personality type, you can locate characters that share it with you 👇
(Also, if you don't know your personality type, ypu can find out here: https://www.16personalities.com/)
(Note: don’t expect to find your personality in each book)

i feel like i should make a post saying what my blog is about. i mostly use tumblr on mobile (i know), and mostly i just kinda use it casually, lurking around, and saving/rbing stuff that i like. so don’t expect too much organization or original content here. but the stuff i do make myself, i tag with #made by suna.
i’m (currently) into danmei/bl, which this blog is mostly dedicated to. but again i am a disorganized mess so i will probably like and rb other stuff on here too.
if you know any good gl media set in ancient asia, please please please let me know because i am desperate for it but cannot find it anywhere :C
i consume most danmei in chinese since i grew up in china and am a native speaker, so sometimes i may be confused about the english names of places/things/people’s titles in these works. please be gentle ^_^
if you scroll down far enough you can find random stuff i rb’d before i really knew how tumblr worked and before i got into danmei so you can just ignore them :’)
under the cut: what i’ve watched/read, what’s next on my list, and my sloppy tagging system. i might update it whenever, or not. we’ll see c:

Here is more happiness:
- Hua Cheng has never played a game in his fucking life. He refuses to play until he's seen Xie Lian play and then he mops the floor w everyone. But he won't even touch Xie Lian. They are not on teams but somehow Hua Cheng hasnt hit him once. Then right at the end he'll just "die" at the first hit Xie Lian gives him
- Xie Lian mains kirby or the pokemon trainer and he's fucking insufferable bcs he swears he's not upset about losing but you can see the light leaving his eyes with every time he dies
- He Xuan is only playing because shi qingxuan won't let him leave without trying it at least once. He complains the entire time and stands in the corner but then he realizes he'll have to play more if he doesn't try. So he kills Shi Qingxuan only and then walks off the stage IMMEDIATELY after and begs to get food on the way home
- Shi Qingxuan is tired of He Xuan's shit and plays fucking ness and spams with absolutely no remorse
- Lang Qianqiu plays either sheik, fox, or pit. He kins them. He does not want items. He wants Xie Lian and Qi Rong to battle him with full seriousness and he doesn't shut up until they do
- Qi Rong gave Lang Qianqiu the bad controller. He gave Xie Lian the bad controller. He gave everyone else the controllers that Gu Zi broke when they first got it and then he uses the best controller in the house. He does not care if they cry. He is going to absolutely slaughter them.
- Nan Feng and Fu Yao are horrible. They picked the same character and different maps. They screamed for an hour over the fucking music and physically fought over the character. They wanted all the items. Nan Feng throws Fu Yao's controller so he'll win. Fu Yao literally lunges at him. The wii is broken, Gu Zi is mortified, god is dead, and now they are rolling on the floor.
Honorable Mentions:
- Ban Yue does not know how to play at all. She ends up being taught by Gu Zi. She mains Princess Peach but specifically the purple outfit and she smiles every time she gets to use the smash ball. Xie Lian loses to her purposely, Nan Fen and Fu Yao almost kill each other trying to slaughter her, and Hua Cheng scoffs.
- Gu Zi does not play. All he does is stand menacingly in the corner with the swear jar in hand. He threatens to tax everyone there. Fu Yao challenges him. He loses. The swear jar gains at least 200 more by the end of the day.

Black Water Demon He Xuan:: One of the Four Great Galamities. He keeps to himself. Though Hua Cheng is the Demon King of the Land, He Xuan is the Demon King of the Seas. The two mainly keep to themselves and avoid one another’s turf.
Lang Ying:: A peaceful ghost spirit of a young boy infected with the Human Face Disease- the very plague that destroyed Xie Lian’s kingdom. Lang Ying was traumatized and lives with Xie Lian in Puqi Shrine as a form of therapy.
Ban Yue:: The former High Priestess of the Ban Yue peoples. Though the Ban Yue kingdom died out long ago, an ancient grudge between Ban Yue and her general Ke Mo turned them both into active ghosts.
Ke Mo:: Former general of the Ban Yue kingdom, Ke Mo was a father figure to the young priestess Ban Yue before she betrayed the kingdom to slaughter. His grudge against her turned them both into active ghosts.
Lan Chang // Jian Lan:: A prostitue in the Ghost City. Known for wearing layers of makeup so thick that it literally flakes and chips off her face as she speaks. Lan Chang finds herself in the center of a Heavenly fight.
Cuo Cuo:: A demonic fetus spirit who devours the body and soul of babies still in their mother’s womb. Before Cuo Cuo was violently cut from its mother’s womb and murdered it was likely the child of an unknown Heavenly Official.
Humans of Note
Gu Zi:: A child who comes to live in Puqi Shrine, the main residence of Xie Lian, after his father is possessed by a demon. Gu Zi is too young to understand possession, and so he follows the demon as if it were his real father.

Terms of Endearment in CQL and Wuxia
Ope. My childhood obsession with wuxia got called out by @hunxi-guilai’s post here
Mostly I think of terms of endearment being name conjugations. CQL/MDZS covers most of the types.
Let’s go over a brief overview of what we do see in CQL/MDZS:
A + name: e.g A-xian, A-cheng, A-yuan. It’s not something that’s used commonly in my family, but I see it all the time. It’s not really romantic, IMO. I can’t think of an example where this is used romantically in the Jin Yong novels i’ve read… but it’s been about 7 years since i last reread one?
Duplicating a character of the name: e.g. Xianxian (sometimes jyl calls wwx this). It’s a diminutive and not really romantic. This was used with my name when I was a kid. Like if LWJ were in a less formal family, i could see LXC calling him Zhanzhan. Gosh, that’s really cute. OMG. I can suddenly see his mom calling him that. Excuse me as I go freak out in a corner…
Name + sibling term (almost always 哥ge/ 妹mei): e.g. Lan-er-gege. In 射雕, Huang Rong calls Guo Jing “Jing-gege”. In 倚天屠龙 Zhang Wuji was told to call Zhao Min “Min-mei”. Both cases, you add a sibling term to make you seem closer to the other person. (note: ge -- older brother, di -- younger brother, jie -- older sister, mei-- younger sister. Usually the female is younger so you see ge and mei more than you see other options. In fact, i can’t think of an example where ge and mei aren’t used...)
Things not used in CQL:
Name + 儿/er: So this is the one I don’t see in QCL/MDZS that I see a lot in wuxia. So Guo Jing calls Huang Rong “Rong-er”. In 神雕侠侣, XiaoLongNv calls Yang Guo “Guo-er” and later tells him to call her “Long-er”. 儿/er can be translated as child or son or youth. In this case, it’s definitely a diminutive suffix.
Last name/descriptor + Gu/姑 and + Lang/郎: 姑, kinda short for guniang, and 郎 (man, i refer you to my post about the Wuji refrain) can be used as suffixes. Namely in 天龙八部 a pair calls each other 梦姑and 梦郎 (dream-gu and dream-lang). In 天龙八部, another character is referred to by a love interest by Last name + lang. Lang is more common than gu (IMO because 姑姑 means aunt [father’s sister, doesn’t matter relative age] so it feels weird… ). Also, Xie Lian calls Hua Cheng 三郎 the same way WWX calls LWJ 蓝二哥哥.
Hanzi 汉子 and Laopo 老婆: Hanzi is something you would call a dude (doesn’t have to be a term of endearment but can be used as such) and Laopo is a common term for wife (literally old lady/woman).
And then there’s the couple from 射雕 who stole and studied a forbidden skill that drove them mad. They mostly called each other ZeiHanzi and ZeiPoniang. Zei meaning thief and Poniang (婆娘) being a combination of Laopo and Guniang and a fairly crude way of saying Laopo.
Sometimes, in Wuxia, if people are in the same sect and end up in a relationship, they’ll continue calling each other by Shimei/Shige/Shidi/Shijie. In some ways that relationship is very intimate anyway so why bother changing what you call each other? It definitely threw me for a loop on how WWX and JYL interacted at first since she called him something that didn’t seem like she was in love with him and he called her something that could be either. o.O
Anyway, bonus note from reading too much Wuxia:
In addition to ways to seem closer when you address SOs, there are also terms used to be polite to people outside of your family by verbally undervaluing the wife. It’s not unlike Wei Wuxian referring to himself as Wei Mou [anonymous person with the last name of Wei].
So sometimes you’ll be reading wuxia and a husband will refer to his wife as 内人 (nei ren/ person inside [the house]), 拙荆 (zhuo jing / clumsy vitex),or 贱内 (jian nei/ cheap or lowly [person] inside [the house]). Sometimes you’ll see other combinations (but never 贱人 [jian ren] because it means slut).
On the flip side, 外子 (wai zi/person on the outside [of the house]) and 拙夫 (zhuo fu/clumsy husband) are ways women could refer to her husband in a similar fashion. I see the latter more than I see the former.
