i looove how parent/child love is handled in umineko, and the differences between everyone's perceptions of how to show their love, and how to view other people's loves

krauss was always told he had to become a suitable heir by kinzo and was raised accordingly, even though he really didn't want to. krauss shows his love for jessica by being more hands-off, unlike his own childhood, and even encouraging "un-heir-like" hobbies like her boxing.

natsuhi was given away by her family in a marriage she didn't want. she shows her love for jessica by being strict and controlling. natsuhi wants jessica to always feel that she supported and cared about her future and success, and to never feel "given away" without a second thought.

meanwhile, jessica sees natsuhi's "love" as stifling and has to deal with it by running away to school and hiding her true self from her mother. while they don't go deeply into jessica and krauss's relationship, the vibe i get is that she gets along better with him.

compare that to lion, who thrived with the strict parenting style and always recognized how natsuhi loved and cared for them. as an alt!yasu, what matters to them is having family/unconditional love in the first place and not necessarily how that love manifests.

eva was always told she would never amount to anything, and to stop trying so hard. so she shows her love for george by telling him he'll amount to great things, and to always try his hardest. she will always support his journey. hideyoshi lost his whole family so he shows his love by always striving to be friendly with others, and to always bring positivity to other's lives, because being together with family is the most important thing. so he steps away from strict parenting and lets eva handle it.

and we know about george's feelings on eva's love for him, even though he, just like jessica, recognizes that their mothers love them. however, he admires his father and wants to be just like him!

rudolf got ignored and had to carve out his own place in the world - and it wasn't with his family. he loves battler by letting him do his own thing, so much so he lets battler leave the family register. if being away from them will make battler happier, then rudolf'll accept it.

meanwhile, battler has a complicated relationship with rudolf whose parenting style makes him think rudolf doesn't actually have any familial feelings at all, and resents him for it. he adores asumu though, who was outwardly kind and loving to him!

battler even forgives rudolf and agrees to return to the ushiromiya family when he realizes that rudolf actually DOES love his family, after spending so many years convinced rudolf never actually cared after all

and rosa...also ignored, but also bullied to kingdom come by her siblings for being "stupid." so she sees maria, who's also susceptible to being bullied, and tries to make her into being someone who would NOT be bullied. who could be "normal."

maria though...she's the only one who can actually see rosa's love for what it is, though, past all the layers of abuse, control, and trauma, that the other ushiromiya cousins struggled so deeply with. so she resolves to love her mama, regardless...

yasu fantasized for years about battler rescuing her in her greatest time of need because he's her prince and loves her. he promised!

battler: actually only "rescues" kanon by helping him pick up the tools because he's just a nice, helpful person. kanon is literally a stranger to him.

battler simply throws a wrench into yasu's whole worldview that people act out of Romantic Love, and it is the One Element Of The World that could both make and destroy people. it's the one thing that could save her and make her Worthy of Being Alive.

yasu likes to imagine someone being with her when she's being scolded or suffering, like with natsuhi scolding shannon and kanon showing up out of nowhere and going SHE'S THE WORST, or how the other servants bully yasu and shannon is standing there and trying to cheer her up.

but...in the end, all that kanon and shannon do for yasu is encourage her or vent with her and talk through things with her. they don't (can't) actually do anything about the situation. they help her brave the bullying by standing strong and helping her withstand it .

kanon is shannon's younger brother. shannon is yasu's best friend. they are how she envisions familial and platonic love. you could also bring people like genji and kumasawa into how yasu views familial love and friendship. they helped make her life more fun and bearable...but they don't really make life worth living. she was still contemplating just ending it all and going to the golden land. up until battler offers her a glimpse of potential escape from rokkenjima, and she thinks it's because of romantic love.

romantic love is the one thing that could free her of her life, that would drive someone else to rescue her and break the cycle. for a long time, yasu pinned those hopes on battler.

but then, george ends up being the "prince" to shannon.

he notices shannon being belittled and doesn't just stand by and try to tell her to chin up, he helps her out! and then, yup, it turns out that george has a crush on her. yasu was right that it's because of romantic love that someone would go out of their way to help her.

same deal with jessica. who really approached kanon and stepped in and wanted to change things for kanon because she has a crush on him. even though shannon and jessica have been best friends for years...yasu doesn't see friendship as love that is transformative.

and then battler in episode 1, the outsider to the family, both:

1) helps kanon out, a literal stranger, not out of love, but because he's a nice person

2) actually tries to step in with rosa abusing maria, family he hasn't seen in years, because he feels this is wrong

even in episode 2, battler stands up for kanon, who is still effectively a stranger to him, because he feels like kanon is being unfairly blamed!! battler clearly isn't in love with anyone at that point. he just steps in because he sees people are suffering or maligned and it's WRONG

yasu: so the guy i was in love with and pinned all my hopes on to rescue me, because he loved me, not only forgot about it and did not rescue me, but is also just a NICE PERSON who would HELP ANYONE OUT????? *laughs hysterically and bitterly*

then on oct 6th, battler did try to rescue yasu, who he barely knew and was most certainly not in love with, because he noticed her suffering. battler, when given the chance, extended that kindness and acceptance to yasu too, and made her feel loved at the end...
