Mum brought our brunch from the vegetarian stall located one bus stop away from our house. For herself, she picked these narrow strips of Fried Kway Teow (炒粿条) with mock char siu or char siew. For my Vegetarian Rice (斋饭), she chose my favourite curry mock mutton & potato, okra stir-fry and stewed mushrooms.

disclaimer: I don't know much about the country so I've looked a few things up on google and obviously used google translate (lang. used: malay). please please lmk if anything is wrong (translations or anything relating to the culture). I'm always open to learn and already did a bunch from my quick google search haha I've been on a few websites that shared traditional foods and now I need to go asap and taste everything!! "Oh my god, it smells amazing in here," your boyfriend Mat exclaimed when you entered the small restaurant.

"I know," you answered, your face lighting up at the familiar scent. "It's my favorite place ever."

The hostess, a close friend of your grandmother, light up when she saw you walk in. "(Y/n)! ia telah begitu lama. Tengok awak. Awak sangat cantik." (It's been so long. Look at you. You're so beautiful.)

You smiled, catching up with her quickly and finally introducing your boyfriend to her.

"Selamat berkenalan," (It’s nice to meet you.) he said, his pronunciation a lot better then when you practiced with him on the plane ride.

When you were finally seated, your favorite table of course, and immediately started looking through the menu. Almost two days ago you and Mat had made it to your home country, Singapore. After a year of dating, you were ready for him to meet your family back home and show him where you spend most of your childhood. Mat was very excited for you to show him everything and was a very good sport when eating all of the cultural foods he was not used to. He loved exploring and expanding his food palate.

"You've already had the chili crab, but this place does it better than anywhere else, so you can have that again if you want." You translated the menu for him, but he wanted something with rice or noodles. "Then I'd do the char kway teow. It's pretty traditional stir fry based dish. I think you'd like it."

"Ok, I might take that then." He looked around more, still deciding on what he's in the mood for.

A server, also someone you knew, then came over to take your orders. You gave her yours, then looked at Mat, unsure if he had made his final decision. "You ready?"

He nodded, then looked at the server. "Saya tolong minta char kway teow." (I will have the char kway teow, please.) Your mouth dropped in shock. How did he just say this sentence, pronouncing the words almost perfectly? The server nodded, then left towards the kitchen.

"What?" He grinned.

"How did you know how to say that?" You were still shocked, but a smile crept over your lips. You had taught him a few words here and there, but not how to say whole sentences.

"Oh, I didn't tell you?," he asked innocently. "I've been taking duolingo lessons since we've planned this trip." That was almost three months ago. Tears coated your eyes when you realized what that meant.

"Mat." He smiled, taking your hand in his.

"I just thought I could impress your family a bit. And you, by the looks of it." You broke out in a small, emotional laugh.

"I want to squeeze the crap out of you right now. And kiss." He laughed and kissed the palm of your hand.

"We can do that later. How about you let me have my last meal first?"

5. My favorite restaurant is called Mai Thai Portland. I really love their pad woon sen and char kway teow. I haven't tried anything there that I didn't immediately like though.

8. I prefer white chocolate! Milk and dark chocolate are too rich.

79. Unfortunately, I don't have any leftovers to eat. I finished them all yesterday evening.

86. I absolutely love sharing food! My favorite thing about going out with friends is ordering family-style, so everyone can sample all the different dishes.

food is so personal to me actually,, COMFORT FOODS!!!

1. 皮蛋瘦肉粥- translated as century egg lean meat congee, it's a rice porridge that never fails to cheer me up. add green onions and crullers? whew that's the stuff

2. char kway teow- it's a wok fried noodle dish with prawns and cockles, and I've had it at least five times since coming home for the holidays

3. cookie dough. yes with the raw egg in it. yes it's impractical. no I won't get sick I truly believe it'll make me stronger

also Garrett Palm you evil imp of a man,, don't you dare. FOODS I WOULD RATHER STUB MY TOE THAN EAT:

1. Chinese yam. actually so hateful, sets off every single one of my food textural icks. I can't stand it in dessert form, fried- I've tried it all and my distaste rises above

2. olives. makes my face scrunch up. ewck.

3. bittergourd. just a nightmare of a food I don't know why we use it so much in cooking

I'm finally meal planning

This week I made some really good dishes! Only one of them I have made before. I'm trying to get out of my comfort zone and cook more from my wonderful cookbooks.

Monday, I just whipped up a stroganoff!! I'm trying to like tempeh, but the texture is so off to me.

I ended up making horchata on Tuesday and it was so fun and so worth it. I will be making horchata CONSTANTLY now.

Wednesday, I made cashew kibbeh from my North African cookbook!!

On Thursday I was so tired and had a lot of homework to do so we ordered out. :/

Yesterday I made the char kway teow (炒果条) and it was SO DELICIOUS. I will be making this more often. I got the recipe from a vegan cookbook.

For dinner today I'll probably make the kapusta z grochem, which is a Polish comfort dish. It's super good and I made it for a polish friend one time, and they loved it.

This is how my cashew kibbeh turned out! I think I did pretty well without seeing any photos of what people do with the designs on top hehe
