When she was pregnant with Nikki, they were prepared. Things were done with around the sixth month, which was the plan for the twins as well, they’d get things ready by the sixth month and then worry forward…which when he checked his phone, he noticed that right now, past midnight, she was already in the six months area.

But it was still early.

He inhales shakily while holding Nicole to his chest, eyes forward, face blank of any emotion as he tried to understand what just happened. The doctors,while surprised to hear about the labor, reassured Rooster that she’d be fine…except she’d be alone this time.

It’d be a c-section, its what they told him, and his eyes met Beatrice’s who just stared back up at him horrified, so scared and still feeling small. He reached for her hand, holding her fingers only for her touch to slip away from his when they rolled her into the room. He’d be able to get in there once it was safe.

He called everyone, the guys,Mav,Bea’s parents, her siblings…everyone was aware. Bea’s mother almost fainted over the phone and Maverick did end up breaking something, he heard it…and now he was in the room, with Nikki,waiting for Beatrice’s mother to come because he wasn’t allowed in the room with Bea.

It was an emergency c-section after all.

He looks up when he hears footsteps approaching, soon enough Maverick’s panting face appears on the door, “Rooster.” he breathes out, “Sorry,I came as fast as I could, how’s Bea?”

“She’s having the c-section now.”

He nods, looking to his nephew and grand-niece, “And you?”

Rooster looked away from Maverick, the weight of what was happening clinging on his shoulders, “...I’m fuckin’ terrified.” he whispers, “It’s too early,Mav.”

Maverick puts a comforting hand on Rooster's shoulder, understanding the fear and worry that must be consuming him. "I know, Rooster," he says softly, "But the doctors are doing everything they can to take care of Bea and the babies. She's in good hands."

Rooster nods, his grip on Nicole tightening slightly as he tries to keep himself together. "I know," he says, his voice trembling, "It's just...it's too early. I thought we had more time, you know?"

Maverick squeezes his shoulder reassuringly, "I know." he says, holding back the ‘so am I’ "It's a scary situation, but you have to trust the doctors. They know what they're doing, and they'll do everything they can to make sure Bea and the babies are safe."

"I know," Rooster repeats, taking a deep breath, "I just wish I could be in there with her." he looks at the door she’d roll in any second now, “...I know I have to stay with Nikki,” if his daughter could sense the uneasiness,she wasn’t showing it, too busy with her teething ring.

"I know you do," Maverick says, "But sometimes, all we can do is wait and trust that things will be okay. Bea is strong, and so are those babies. They'll get through this." he sighed, sitting down on the other chair in the room,clasping his hands together, “You called anyone else?”

“I called everyone.”

“Hm,alright…am I the first one here?” Rooster nods, “Alright.”

“I thought Penny was with you.” his nephew says, looking back at Maverick, “You two are living together after all.”

Maverick smiles while holding Nicole’s little hand, his eyes on her, “She was at the bar tonight.” he explains, making Rooster give him a confused look, “She thinks something is off, so she was checking the cameras with Jessie and Shells.”

“Oh,I see.” Rooster was glad they could have this conversation, he was glad he could ease his brain the best he could. He had no idea how long she’d be inside, they got in the hospital about ten minutes ago and since then it’s been radio silence. “...we didn’t even finish the nursery?”

“Hm?”

“The twins’ nursery.” he whispers, “She finished painting it, but…the cribs, everything, it’s still empty.”

Maverick reaches over to pat Rooster's shoulder, offering a comforting gesture once he lets go of Nicole’s hand. "Don't worry about that right now," he says gently, "The nursery can wait, and we'll all pitch in to help you get it ready when the time is right."

Rooster furrows his brows, “You don’t have to do that." he says, but his uncle just smirks, patting his shoulder again. Rooster,knowing he can’t win this, ends up taking a deep breath, "I just can't help but feel like I should have been more prepared."

"You are prepared," Maverick reassures him, "You and Bea have been preparing for this moment since you found out she was pregnant again. You've been taking great care of her and Nikki, and you'll do the same for the twins." he pauses, “So they came a bit early, that’s fine. They’d still be here, even now.”

“...do you know how big five month babies are?” Rooster asks, holding his hands apart while holding Nicole with the inside of his arm against his chest, “This big…hell they can be smaller than my hands.” he clenches his fists, then closes his eyes, burying his nose on Nicole’s hair, trying to find comfort with the little toddler, “I…”

“It’s okay,Rooster.”

He was going on a spiral. He was feeling guilty and angry with himself, and Nicole was noticing it. She was looking back at him, her tiny hands touching his face, “Dada?’ she calls, “Woops?” and that makes a smile appear on his face, even if his heart feels so immensely heavy.

“Dada is fine,” he kisses her tiny palm, then nuzzles her cheek, “Dada is worried about mama.” and he sighs into her hair, then arches his brows before muttering, “I need some coffee,can you hold her for a bit?” As if he needed to ask, his uncle immediately grabbed Nicole from his lap and walked around the room,showing the different things there enough to keep her distracted.

Rooster stands up and inhales. Deeply. He rolls his neck, then his shoulders as if to break the ‘ick’ that was on his body,digging his hands into his pockets as he walks out of the room to the hospital’s cafeteria. He sees a few patients coming in, a few other mothers and some couples, as he walks slowly on the hallway.

He feels heavy.

And every step echoes.

It’s like he’s moving in slow motion in a movie, but he knows he’s not. This was real life and his wife was undergoing an emergency c-section and he has no idea if she’s okay or not. When he reaches the cafeteria, which honestly felt like a blink of an eye, he looks around until he finds the coffee machine, tucked in the corner, almost hidden. He doesn’t know why, but hospital coffee was always delicious to him.

Whenever he came with his mother, he’d go through four cups of these while chewing on some biscuits. His mother’s treatment lasted a few minutes, so when he was done, he’d walk around the hospital and see the surroundings…it helped his mind and his heart. As he fills his cup, he wonders if that’s what he’s feeling right now: the shadow of a memory, the fear of entering the hospital and waiting for news.

Rooster takes a moment to collect himself, taking slow, deep breaths as he sips his coffee. He knows he needs to stay strong for Beatrice and their babies, but he can't help the overwhelming emotions that are swirling inside him.

He glances at his phone, checking the time, “...only thirty minutes? Fuck.”. The wait feels excruciating, and he can't help but feel helpless at this moment. He wishes he could do more, but all he can do now is wait and hope for the best.

As he stands in the cafeteria, he recalls the words of Maverick, reminding him that he and Beatrice have been preparing for this moment. He knows they have a strong support system, and he takes some comfort in that thought. He knows they are not alone in this journey, and they have family and friends who care deeply about them.

With his coffee in hand, he takes a deep breath and starts walking back towards the recovery room. He shouldn’t be surprised when he hears the loud voices in the hallway, his smile widening because he knows that everyone else is there.

And indeed everyone was. Bea’s siblings and her parents, alongside the Dagger Squad, all of them sitting outside the room as he sees Maverick talking to them from the door. It was Evelyn who notices hims first, doing a double take then touching Jake’s shoulder to warn him, “Rooster–”

“Bradley!” Claudia walks through the group and meets him, wrapping him into a tight,motherly hug that only his mother in law could give. She cups the back of his head, he has to lower himself a bit so it’s comfortable for her to touch him, “Oh my bambino, is she okay? What happened?”

“I…honestly,Claudia I don’t know, they just…” he shrugged, “Wanted to come out?”

His mother in law eased out a gentle laugh, it was tense and he could see it in her eyes, but she smiled nonetheless. When she met his eyes, her eyebrows lowered and her hands cupped his cheeks, “Bambino, you know neither of you are at fault because of this,right?”

Rooster takes a moment to process Claudia's words, feeling the weight of her reassurance and support. He nods slowly, smiling at her "I know," he says softly, "But it's just...hard not to feel guilty, you know? I keep thinking maybe I missed something, or I should have done something differently."

Claudia smiles warmly at him, her hands still holding his cheeks. "It's natural to feel that way," she says, "But you have been doing everything you can for Beatrice and the babies. Sometimes, things happen that are beyond our control. What's important now is that we support each other and stay strong as a family. Okay?"

Rooster's eyes welled up with tears as he looked into Claudia's caring gaze. "Thank you," he says, his voice choked with emotion, "I uh…she went into surgery thirty minutes ago."

“When we had Beatrice, it lasted a bit more than that.” Rafael’s deep voice says from behind Claudia and the Schiavoni patriarch hugs his son-in-law just like Claudia did, “She’ll be okay.” he says softly, shaking his shoulder with a small grin, “They’ll be fine,Bradley.”

“I…I know.” he says quietly, clearing his throat before looking behind his in-laws, “Did you all…come here together?”

“Sort of,” Phoenix replies, “Jake called all of us and we just rushed over…so yes?”

“We’ll be here for you guys.” Payback smiles, giving his friend a thumbs up, “Don’t worry about it,Rooster.

And for a brief second, the weight lifted completely.

She comes back an hour later, sleeping and quietly snoring as she’s rolled back into the room. Rooster stands up to look at the nurses, his mouth parting as he follow Beatrice with his eyes, “...is…are they all okay?”

The nurse smiles at Rooster, fixing Beatrice’s covers once she’s back into the room. "Yes, they're all doing well," she says, "The twins are in the neonatal intensive care unit, but they are stable and receiving the best care. Your wife did great during the surgery, and she's in recovery now."

Rooster lets out a sigh of relief, feeling a weight lifted off his shoulders. "Thank you," he says, "Thank you for taking care of them."

The nurse nods, "Of course, it's our job. And we'll make sure to keep you updated on their progress."

Rooster looks over at Beatrice, sleeping soundly, and then back at the nurse. "Thank you,I…I’ll be with her a bit but can I see them after?” she smiles more, nodding at him and cooing at Nicole when she followed the nurse with her eyes, saying ‘bye bye’ once she was out of the room.

And Rooster dropped on the chair after a few seconds trying to remain upright, with his left hand covering his eyes. He allowed the silence to take over, his family and friends had to leave since it was already late - not after Claudia got him a change of clothes, of course and taking Nicole to stay with her and Rafael for the time being - and Beatrice’s quiet breathing was the only thing he could hear.

He didn’t know if he wanted to cry or he wanted to laugh…or both. His body was still tense from everything, his shoulder muscles hurt immensely, like when you sleep in a bad position for hours and wake up feeling like you were run over by a car. Except he didn’t sleep.

Rooster takes a deep, shuddering breath, trying to release some of the tension in his body. He knows he needs to stay strong for Beatrice and the twins, but it's hard to keep his emotions in check after such an intense and emotional day.

He feels a mix of exhaustion, fear, and overwhelming love for his family. He reaches out and gently takes Beatrice's hand in his, giving it a light squeeze, rubbing her knuckles. "I love you,gorgeous." he whispers softly, though he knows she can't hear him.

He stays by her side, keeping a watchful eye on her as she rests, waiting for any news from the medical staff about their twins. The minutes feel like hours, and he finds himself drifting in and out of anxious thoughts, that and the obvious need to sleep.

After what seems like an eternity, a nurse comes into the room to check on Beatrice. She smiles warmly at Rooster, giving him a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "Did she wake up?” he shakes his head negatively, “Ah,it’s alright, it was a long surgery, she needs the rest.” and she leans over to check her vitals, all the while Rooster watches from a few inches away, crossing his arms over his chest since he doesn’t know what to do with his hands.

The nurse finishes her check-up and nods approvingly. "Her vitals look good," she says, "She's just in a deep sleep right now, which is completely normal after surgery. She'll wake up when her body is ready."

Rooster nods, chewing his lower lip as his hand comes up to rub his neck. He knows Beatrice needs her rest, but he can't help but worry about her and the twins. “That’s good…that’s good.”

The nurse smiles at the tender moment and gives Rooster a reassuring pat on the back. "You're doing great," she says, "Both of you are. The twins are receiving excellent care in the NICU and let me tell you, your little girl? I think she’s the spunky one of the bunch."

"Oh," Rooster says softly, his voice choked with emotion, "Really?"

The nurse chuckles softly, "Oh yes, she's got quite the personality already. I had the pleasure of checking on both of them earlier, and she’s a little wriggly worm. Your little boy is a bit quieter, but he’s still moving."

Rooster can't help but smile at the image the nurse paints of his babies. His heart feels so much lighter. They are moving, god they are moving already. "And…they are okay? Healthy wise,I mean.”

“Well,” she fixes Beatrice’s gown before looking back at him, “They are preemies, which means we need to keep an eye on them until they can leave. Five month preemies are rare, but not uncommon.” she smiles, “Honestly, your twins are the most active ones I’ve seen in a while and I’ve worked here for over twenty years now.”

“Oh,huh,that’s.” a fucking relief, “That’s great. So nothing out of the ordinary?”

“Nothing we could see,” she says while sliding her hands into her scrubs’ pants, “They are asleep now, so they are mimicking their mama.” she smiles back at Beatrice, then turns her head to Rooster, “Would you like to see them?”

He opens his mouth to say yes, he wants to say yes, but his eyes slowly drop to Beatrice. If she wakes up and he’s not there, he’s scared she might not be okay with it…plus,he’d want to see the twins with her, if he was able to do so.

"Thank you for offering," Rooster says to the nurse, "But I want to wait until Beatrice wakes up. It's important for both of us to see them together."

The nurse smiled understandingly, "Of course, that's completely understandable. Take your time, and when you're both ready, I'll be happy to take you to the NICU to see them."

Rooster nods again, giving the nurse a thankful little grin as he watches as she leaves the room. Rooster, once alone again, falls back on the chair and holds his head on his hands, breathing into his palms, “...they are okay.” he mumbles, rubbing the bridge of his nose, “They are okay,god, they are okay.” Beatrice makes a little noise in her throat and turns her head towards him, her fingers twitching and he could swear he heard her soft whisper of ‘Brad…’

“Are you awake?” He questions but he gets no reply, only seeing her chest move up and down, eyelids fluttering as she dreams. No, she’s still fast asleep. He reaches out and gently brushes a strand of hair away from her face, his touch light and tender.

He leans in closer, speaking softly to her, "I'm right here, Bea," he murmurs, "You did great, and the twins are doing well too. I love you so much." He places a gentle kiss on her forehead, the little smile on her face - even in her sleep - was the confirmation she heard him. He sighs, now he was the one feeling sleep take over him, he knows he has to sleep so he could be there for Bea when she wakes up…so he pulls the chair closer to the bed, lets his eyes flutter shut and holds her hand as he, much like Bea, fall on a deep slumber.

“Yeah, so I’m having a lot of abdominal pain,” Leroy said loudly to the receptionist of the Storybrooke Walk In Clinic, which shared a wing of the hospital with the OB/GYN ward. “Feels like my bowels are all twisted. Maybe if I could empty them fully I’d feel better, but I’m all stopped up.”

Emma rolled her eyes as she sat with Killian waiting eagerly for their big prenatal appointment. “I don’t know about you, babe,” she said, squeezing her husband’s hand, “but I can safely say that is more than I ever wanted to know about Leroy’s bowels.”

Killian laughed, bringing their joined hands to his lips and giving her hand a quick kiss. “Quite so, love. Almost makes me long for the days where we were so busy chasing the latest villain, we didn’t have time for such mundane things.”

She chuckled, determinedly pushing aside the small kernel of insecurity his statement brought up–fear that Killian would grow bored with a mundane Happily Ever After and leave her for further adventure. She knew she’d never completely rid herself of the insecure inner child who’d never mattered to anyone and didn’t think she ever would, but she wasn’t that child anymore. She was an adult with many, many people who loved her and who she loved. She wasn’t going to let her insecurities ruin her idyllic life.

Inside, she felt the small flutters of their baby moving and kicking away, and she placed a gentle hand on her slightly swollen belly. She’d only just begun to feel their little magic bean, and every time she felt the sensation, it was like magic.

“Everything alright, love?” Killian asked, eying the way she held her belly with concern.

“Absolutely wonderful,” she said, beaming a smile at him. “The baby’s kicking!”

Killian placed his hand next to hers and was still for a moment, before shaking his head. “I do wish I could feel it.”

Emma reached up and cupped his cheek. “All in good time, Killian,” she said. “Just wait a few months, and this little guy or girl will be waking you up at night with their kicks.”

“You’ve no idea how much I look forward to that,” Killian said, with a bright smile. “Now explain to me again what is so momentous about this particular appointment today?”

Emma had reached the twenty week point in her pregnancy last Monday, and so today was the day for the big anatomy scan ultrasound. She’d opted for a 4D ultrasound, because she couldn’t wait to see her baby; really see it, beyond the grainy images standard ultrasounds provided.

Nor could she wait to see Killian’s reaction when he got to see his son or daughter for the first time. She had no doubt he would declare it to be magical, and come to think of it, maybe he wasn’t far off. Imagine being able to use sound waves to see your baby inside!

She’d had her first ultrasound at her first doctor’s appointment at seven weeks. She’d been alone that time–not that Killian wouldn’t have dropped literally everything to be with her, but because….well because she didn’t want to get her hopes up. They’d been trying for a baby for so long, and there had been a few times her period was late that they’d really believed they’d succeeded.

Only for the pregnancy tests to all come back negative.

The disappointment had been hard on both of them, and so this time around when she missed her period, when she started feeling nauseous and fatigued, even when she took a positive pregnancy test, she was afraid to believe. She’d decided to get verification before she got Killian’s hopes up yet again.

Her heart swelled as she remembered that day, Whale doing the ultrasound himself and showing her her baby on the screen and the strong beep of his or her little heart. She’d never forget the look in Killian’s eyes when she showed him the indistinct still the ultrasound tech had printed out and then explained to him what he was looking at. Happy wasn’t a strong enough word for it. He looked like a man who’d been given the greatest gift of his life, and the kiss he had given her afterwards, tears streaming from his eyes, would go down in history as one of the best kisses in the history of the kiss.

“So today’s the big day, isn’t it?” Leroy said cheerfully as he took a seat next to Emma in the waiting area. “Lot’s riding on this, you know.”

“....a lot’s riding on my prenatal appointment?” Emma asked with a raised brow.

“Well, yeah,” Leroy said. “Dwarves and I have a pool, betting on whether you got a boy or girl in there, the size, birth date. The works. I went girl all the way. Just a feeling. The winner of the pool gets all his meals at Granny’s paid by the rest for a month, so I’m counting on you two.”

Killian rolled his eyes. “We shall endeavor to ensure your meals are properly paid for, dwarf.”

Leroy shrugged and for a moment was silent as he watched Storybrooke citizens slowly filter in and out of the waiting room. “Lots of people coming into the clinic today,” he mentioned idly. “You know why it is, right?”

“I’ve no doubt you’ll soon enlighten us,” Killian said, putting an arm around Emma and leaning back in his chair.

“It’s that big forest fire up north,” Leroy said, “makes the air quality here really bad. You know it’s the werewolves that caused it, right?”

“The were….what?” Emma asked.

“The werewolves!” Leroy said. “Somebody was up there hunting them, and as everyone knows, if you don’t catch a werewolf the right way, they catch on fire and then become REAL werewolves. Gotta be what happened!”

Granny, who’d come in complaining of a sinus infection, slapped him upside the head before really laying into him as he continued to plead “I don’t mean good werewolves like you and Ruby!”

“Never a dull moment around here, is there love?” Killian asked with a grin.

She laughed along with him just before a nurse called them back.

Killian sat on his living room couch, looking down at the photo he held and feeling his eyes mist again. This was her; this was his daughter. The level of detail available on these 4D ultrasounds was incredible. Love like he’d never felt rushed on him yet again.

Emma plopped beside him, wrapped an arm around his waist and set her head on his shoulder. “She’s cute, isn’t she?”

“She’s gorgeous, love,” he answered softly, almost reverently. “Looks just like her mother.”

Emma chuckled. “She does kinda look like me, doesn’t she? Except for when the ultrasound tech first focused on her face and she raised one eyebrow. She was her father’s daughter all the way there.”

“She’ll be the best of both of us,” he said, running a finger across the image.

He’d had many singular and unexpected experiences since he first came to the Land Without Magic, but he knew that never in all of his days would he forget this day. He remembered the tech slathering Emma’s protruding belly with a slimy, gelatinous substance and then running a strange looking wand all around.

He’d been curious about the procedure, wondering how it all worked, but then his daughter’s image had appeared on the small moving picture box the wand was connected to, and everything had fallen away.

This was his child, his and Emma’s, the physical embodiment of their True Love, and she was perfect. He watched as she smiled, yawned, waved her arms around and kicked. She was an active one, their little magic bean, and she’d likely lead them a merry chase.

The tech had taken her time, examining their child and monitoring her progress. “Everything looks good,” she said. She’d gone on to give them the news that their little cygnet was a girl. She’d congratulated them, printed them out a few pictures from the scan and then taken her leave.

“You’ll spoil her rotten, Killian,” Emma said as he leaned down to kiss her, still overcome by the news they’d received, even all these hours later.

“Aye, that I will,” he agreed, “but the gods help any suitor who breaks her heart!”

“This kid is lucky to have you for a father,” Emma said, eyes fixed on their baby’s first picture.

“Not nearly as luck as she is to have you for a mother.”

“We are pretty great together, aren’t we?” Emma asked with a grin. “We must be if we can make someone like her.”

“The road has been long,” Killian said, “and far from smooth, but we’ve made it; we’re a family. This may be the greatest adventure of our lives, but I can’t wait for it.”

Notes:

–So apparently pregnant Emma is all I want to write about lately. I just really, really wish we’d gotten to see more of CS’s happily ever after!

–This story was inspired by real life events. My allergist’s office is in the same building as an urgent care center. Last week, while I was waiting the obligatory 30 minutes after my shot, an old man came in and went into way too much detail to the receptionist about his abdominal pain and bowels. He then proceeded to take a seat next to this woman who looked to be in her early twenties. He began talking….and pretty much never stopped, and the things he said….well, let’s just say, I wasn’t exaggerating Leroy for comic effect. This old man told the (very much uninterested in the conversation) young woman that the recent forest fires in Canada were a result of people hunting werewolves. He stated matter-of-factly that if people try to kill werewolves the wrong way, they catch on fire and then become REAL werewolves. (What were they before being incorrectly hunted? He didn’t say.)

–Naturally, this rather bizarre incident immediately left me with one burning question: How can I turn this into a CS au? And here we are!

This is very funny when you consider the later implication that the coat has a will of its own and is part of the divided "Earl". Bathtime, bitch. [ ♠ ]

仲間だからに決まってるんでしょ　nakama dakara ni kimatterun desho

More literally, "Isn't it a given because we're friends/comrades/partners/associates?".

仲間 nakama is a largely untranslatable but very common term in shounen manga. The kanji separately mean "relation(ship)" + "space/interval/enclosed area", and the term is used to describe people existing within the same "space" (circumstance, occupation, group, path, etc.) who are initially bound together by virtue of sharing said space. The emotional bond it refers to is usually quite profound, however; most colleagues would not describe themselves this way unless the workplace was so tight-knit as to be a "family".

I wavered between "one of us" and "one of mine" for this line, and am going with the vaguer version for now, but it's easy to hear what she really means. For Lenalee specifically, that's the heart of it: Allen is one of hers, a newly fledged piece of her "world", and she'd do anything to protect him, even from his own savior complex. [ ♠ ]

Wonderland definitely numbers among the many sources of inspiration behind this manga. I can't find it now, but I remember reading a Q&A in which Hoshino said that Allen's character was originally meant to be a girl, but she got talked out of it because a female protagonist (of a shounen manga) who cries as much as Allen does would get eviscerated in the court of public opinion (true enough). Ever since, I've been convinced that her name would have been "Alice". [ ♠ ]

Road draws a parallel between the Akuma and his arm: if he shoots her, he will reinforce her claim that weapons are for human beings (such as Allen) to kill other human beings (such as Road) with. He wouldn't be acting as an Exorcist and merely destroying one of the Earl's weapons if he shot her, because she is not an Akuma; he would be attempting to commit the sin of murder, self-defence notwithstanding. [ ♠ ]

This line always makes me really emotional on reread because he very nearly does end up friendless and alone, and tries very hard to push everyone away, but Johnny Gil and Kanda Yuu of all people refuse to allow it, diving face-first into exile after him. Road couldn't have predicted that. Nobody could have. It happens precisely because Allen is who he is, compassionate to a self-sacrificing fault; he wins people over, even those most determinedly set against him. That big heart nearly gets him killed so many times, but it also ensures that he isn't alone when it matters most. Gets me every time. [ ♠ ]

Yoshihiro Togashi (Yu Yu Hakusho and Level E) "It was an intense four years, I wonder how much my mind changed from the beginning to the end of the series. I was taxed at 70%, I wanted to start running in the middle of the night if I let my guard down thinking I would be working 20 hours a day and 14 hours for free. If I'd had a driver's license back then, it would have been dangerous. My body, life and my mind were dissociated, so I wasn't too moved by the 6.53 million copies. I was delighted to see my digits as the main character (not the player) of the game. It is an image of banzai in pixel art."

連載当初と最後でこんなに心がかわるのかというくらい、濃い4年ちょいでした。税金で70%程とられて、1日20時間作業して14時間タダ働きかと思って油断すると夜中走り出したくなってました。当時免許持ってたらやばかった。自分の体と人生と心が解離していたので653万部に余り感慨はありませんでした。自分の数字はゲームの主人公(プレイヤーではなく)的な立ち位置で喜んでいました。ドット絵でバンザイしてるイメージです。

rotating: oh god i specifically was trying to group this segment for parental vibes and themes and now my brain is mush. i need a second notebook maybe... (rereading a bit) okay something like. obviously. goes without saying. kdj is the most unreliable narrator in the world. and clearly there is more to the story, she was literally about to say it before... god stuff. but ill just note out the things i was grabbing so far. the question of how to raise a child in the apocalypse. clear with lgy and sys (like extra extremely so). and lesser with ljh. often kinda. throwing them into the fire. (or a hole. with no explanation. thanks yjh). but also supporting them (literally the incarnation stuff. cant remember where line about 'one persons gaze can mean live or death' but yes. yeah). contrast. kdj mom with the childhood environment and the tone. i think its like. kdj is almost mad about the wrong thing. but its the hurt he has. not the one he may about to have. even if hes wrong about what his mother did (i literally dont know!!) well. it has to be said.

One thing people don’t say about pregnancies was that you could,sometimes, feel like you were drunk.Well,Bea was. She let out a surprised yelp when her shoe slipped out of her foot as she walked past the threshold, “Woops.”

“Woops!” Nikki giggles in her arms, “Woops!”

“Oh you are funny, aren’t you?” she smiles, tickling her daughter’s stomach as the dogs rush over to greet them. Rooster appeared after a few seconds,keys jingling as he closes the front door with his foot, then furrows his brows at a lonely shoe in front of him, “Your daughter think she’s funny.”

He hums happily, holding the shoe for Beatrice to see, arching his brows, “She got it from me- this yours?’ it’s obvious that it was, but he was feeling silly. Maybe it was the beer, it was just one he’s not crazy, or maybe it was just the feeling of…relaxation and pure bliss. He’s happy, he’s happy that she’s happy, so that does give him a little bit of a buzz.

“Yeah,sorry.” she giggles, grabbing it from his hand to plop it back on the ground,slipping her foot into it, “I lost it on the way in and Nikki,” she pokes her daughter’s stomach again, “Mimicked me.”

“Ooops!” the toddler repeats, climbing on Beatrice’s shoulder much for her mother’s surprise, “Woops!”

“Okay,oh God,” she laughs, “Brad!” he’s quick to grab Nicole from her shoulder, holding her to his chest only for her to try to do the same thing to him. “...I don’t think she’s going to sleep.”

“Nope.” he murmurs, “Eh,are you sleepy?”

“Not really.”

‘Then we can stay up.” he shrugs, playing with Nicole’s tiny hands and bringing them to his lips to press quick little kisses against them. When Beatrice took a while to reply, he met her eyes with worry, “Unless you aren’t feeling good?”

The twins were…very active that night. It was a bit painful, but nothing that could be worrisome, she was just thinking they were feeling the atmosphere around and were moving inside of her because of it, “I’m fine.” she holds up her hand, then waves it to say it was okay, “I’m really okay,Roos.” her husband didn’t seem so sure, because his furrow got more intense and his mouth disappeared under his mustache, ‘...Rooster.”

“I worry,” he says, “I can’t help it, I’m your husband.”

Beatrice smiles warmly at Rooster's concern, reaching out to hold his hand. "I know you do," she says softly, "And I appreciate it. But really, I'm okay. It's just the twins being extra active tonight. It's a good sign, right?" she adds with a playful wink.

Rooster chuckles, his worry easing slightly as he squeezes her hand. "Yeah, I guess it is," he says, "I just can't help but worry about you and the babies. You're carrying two little ones in there, and I want to make sure you're feeling alright."

"I know, and it means the world to me that you care so much," Beatrice says, leaning in to give him a tender kiss, "But don’t worry,I’m fine.” she walks past him, gently pinching Nicole’s cheek with the dogs following close behind, as she enters the kitchen, getting herself some water. Rooster huffs while chuckling, turning to follow behind her - like a fool in love,which he was, one hundred percent- “Tonight was fun!’

“It was.” he didn’t put Nikki on her high chair, instead he held her close to his chest as he sat himself on the chair. He kept his eyes on Beatrice, he knew she assured him but he had to be sure, “I’m glad we were able to do this,I know that soon enough it’ll be hard to. Considering that we’ll all be busy.”

She hums positively,sipping on her water as she slowly turns towards the opposite chair, hiding a wince from a hard kick coming from one of the babies, “Yeah,I know. I mean, think about it, we got to the bar, we made sure everything was fine and I didn’t get too anxious! That’s a big bonus.”

Rooster smiles, nodding in agreement. "It definitely is," he says, "You did great tonight, Bea. I could tell you were having fun, and it made me happy to see you enjoying yourself."

Beatrice blushes at his compliment, grateful for his understanding and support. "Thank you," she says, "And I have to give credit to our friends too. They really know how to make a celebration special."

"They do," Rooster agrees, "We're lucky to have them in our lives." he frowns, “Oh that’s sappy.”

“It’s cute!” she smiles, “You love them deep inside.” As they sit together in the kitchen, Rooster continues to hold Nicole close, rocking her gently in his arms. Beatrice can't help but smile at the sight, holding her head up with her hand, not moving her eyes away, ‘...that’s nice.” he looks up at her in surprise, arching his brow, “You. Being a dad…it’s… “ she takes a breath before continuing, “Nice.”

Rooster’s smile only grew as he played with Nicole’s hands, “Nice?” she nods, looking away from him, he smirked more, almost like a predator that just found the perfect snack. He clears his throat, adjusting Nicole on his arms as she babbled, tapping his cheek with her hands, “Well,you do look nice too.”

She laughs, but her laughter is cut short by a sharp intake of air followed by a wince she couldn’t hide. She just held up her hand when he looked at her confusedly, “I’m fine,I swear,Rooster.” she says, setting the glass aside and fixing her position on the chair, thinking the reason it was happening was because she was looking like a pregnant Gollum on there. “I just love seeing you being a dad…it’s very attractive.”

He smirks more, puffing his chest and only making his wife blush like a tomato, “Thank you.” he says, kissing Nicole’s head. To be honest he knew it was late, he knew it was way past Nicole’s bedtime but they were all…very awake, so why bother with sleep? He did ask Beatrice every now and again if she was okay, she always said that she was.

But honestly it was getting harder to hide how painful it was getting.

She winced once she turned her back to him, washing her glass on the sink and holding herself there, easing out quiet breaths as Rooster played with Nicole. She counted to ten, she imagined smelling the flower and blowing the candle and after a few seconds it appeared to help, “How about we watch something?” she hears him ask, slowly turning back to meet his face, “There are some movies Nikki can watch with us.”

“Oh,sure,” lying down on the couch might help a lot too, “Yeah,i don’t mind that.”

Rooster smiles and holds out his free hand for Beatrice to take since his other one was busy holding Nicole. Once they are all on the couch, including the dogs, he wraps his arm around her shoulders. "Alright, let's find something fun to watch," he says, grabbing the remote and browsing through the streaming service they use.

Beatrice leans into him, resting her head on his shoulder, grateful for his comforting presence. As they search for a movie, she can't help but feel the weight of the pregnancy taking its toll on her body. The twins' movements are becoming more intense, and while it's an amazing feeling to know they're growing and active, it's also becoming quite uncomfortable.

Rooster notices her shifting slightly and frowning in discomfort. "Are you sure you're okay?" he asks, concern lacing his voice.

Beatrice gives him a reassuring smile, even though she can't fully hide the discomfort in her eyes. "I'm okay, just feeling a little tired," she says, "Let's pick a movie and distract ourselves."

“Woops!” Nikki giggles, bouncing between her parents, holding onto Jack’s fur as he lies in front of her, “Woops!”

“Anything you’d like?”

“Oh…um…” she frowns, “...Golden Girls? It’s not that bad for Nikki to watch…”

Rooster chuckles at Nikki's adorable attempt to contribute to the movie selection, and he glances at Beatrice. "Golden Girls it is then," he says with a smile, knowing it's one of Beatrice's favorite shows. "Nikki seems to approve." their daughter claps her hands, she has no idea what’s going on nor what show that was, but she was happy to be involved.

Beatrice nods, glad that they've settled on something. She readjusts herself on the couch, finding a more comfortable position, and Rooster wraps his arm around her shoulders once more. With the dogs snuggled close and Nikki happily entertained, they begin watching the show.

As they watch, Beatrice finds herself relaxing a little more, her discomfort momentarily forgotten in the company of her family. She leans into Rooster's embrace, feeling his warmth and support, and it brings her a sense of calm and contentment.

His hand is brushing up and down her arm, the cold of his wedding ring making her body relax even more…only for another wince to make it’s way out of her. He feels her tense up, but she,again,says nothing. He clears his throat, moving a bit on the seat - clearly wanting to know what was going on- and looks over to her, “Baby.”

“Hm?”

“You are moving a lot.”

“The twins are moving a lot.” she laughs weakly, “N-Nothing out of the ordinary, I promise.” the deep voice of Bea Arthur,followed by laugh tracks add to the background but Beatrice almost didn’t hear it. It was…getting a bit too much now, the pain was a bit more intense than normal.

Rooster's concern deepens as he sees Beatrice trying to brush off the discomfort. He gently places his hand on her belly, feeling the twins' movements beneath his palm. "Are you sure it's just the usual kicking?" he asks, his voice filled with worry.

Beatrice tries to put on a brave face, not wanting to worry him further. "Yeah, it's probably just them getting excited about the show," she says, attempting to make light of the situation. "They're active little ones."

Rooster doesn't seem entirely convinced, but he doesn't push her further...yet. Instead, he continues to rub her arm soothingly as they watch the show together. However, he remains attentive, keeping an eye on her and the twins throughout.

She sighs, because it stops for a second, and she’s able to breathe out in relief, “I’m going to the bathroom.” she whispers, gently untangling herself from him and standing to her feet, ‘i won’t take long,” is her response to his worried look, his eyes moving from her face to her stomach before he nods.

“Jojo.” the pittie looks up when he calls her name, “Go with Bea,alright?”

Jolene barks in reply and stands up to do exactly what she was asked to do. As Beatrice makes her way to the bathroom, she can't help but feel a bit uneasy. The pain seems to be increasing, and she knows that it's not just the usual movements of the twins. She takes a deep breath, trying to stay calm and not let worry overtake her.

Inside the bathroom, she takes a moment to collect herself, splashing some cold water on her face. She looks at her reflection in the mirror, trying to reassure herself that everything will be okay ’I’m okay.I’m okay…we are all okay.” she washes her face again, sighing quietly until she frowns, feeling a very…very known pressure on her lower body. She tenses up, “No,no,no,no, it’s too early.” she tells herself, holding her body upright on the sink, her breathign growing erratic. She refuses to look down, she refuses to look down, “No,no,no,God please no, don’t do this…” but she eventually gives in, peeking one eye open to look at the floor.

Her eyes widen, “...ROOSTER!!”

There’s something dropping from the living room, followed by Nicole laughing and thunderous footsteps running over to the bathroom, with Jolene and her kids barking along the chaos, “What?” he asks out of breath, opening the door to show he was holding Nicole under his arm like she was a pillow - and from her smile she didn’t care- “What happened, what-” Beatrice points down,shakily, her eyes filled with tears.

Rooster’s own head drops towards the floor, there’s a puddle there. He blinks, then meets her eyes, his mouth falling open “...gorgeous.” he’s surprised at how calm he sounds, but that calmness disappears after seconds, “Gorgeous, did your water just break???”

Beatrice nods, tears streaming down her face as she tries to maintain some composure. "I think so," she says, her voice trembling, "It's too early, Rooster, it's too early." Panic starts to set in as she realizes the gravity of the situation. “I-I’m only five months! I-I-I can’t—”

Rooster's heart races, but he tries to stay as calm as possible for both of their sakes."Hey, hey, it's going to be okay," he says, trying to soothe her, "We'll get you to the hospital. The doctors will take care of you and the twins, alright?"

"But it's too early," Beatrice repeats, fear evident in her eyes, "They can't be born yet, it's not safe."

Rooster's mind races, trying to remember what they should do in this situation. "We'll get you to the hospital, and they'll do everything they can to keep the twins safe," he says, "It’ll be okay.”

“I don’t even h-have a baby bag done, I don’t– the twins’ nursery isn’t even finished yet!” and she cries more, distraught, her anxiety going through the roof and that’s not going to help the situation.

He quickly reaches for his phone and dials for emergency services, but not the usual ones, oh no..

“Rooster, what the hell,it’s midnight–”

“Jake,I need you to call everyone, Bea is in labor.”

“...she’s WHAT?!”

“There’s no time to explain,I’m taking her to the hospital,” he carefully guides her to the living room, frowning at the fluids pooled on the floor, closing the door behind her after grabbing some towels, “Can you call everyone?” he hears a sleepy ‘what’s happening’ from Evelyn as Jake moves around erratically.

“Yeah, yeah I will. Jesus,is she okay?”

Rooster frowns, looking at his wife’s horrified face, “...yeah.” she frowned while looking up at him, her lower lip trembling, “I’ll call you back,Jake.” he hangs up the call before Jake could say anything, “It’ll be okay.”

“...I’m scared.” she whispered, she looked small, she looked so small, “...Rooster, did I do something wrong?”

Rooster's heart ached at the fear and vulnerability in Beatrice's eyes. He knelt down in front of her, taking her hands in his, "No, baby, you didn't do anything wrong," he said gently, "This isn't your fault. It’ll be okay,alright? “ He pulled her into a hug, holding her close and pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. "I love you, and I'm here for you," he whispered, "We'll get through this, I promise."

Beatrice clung to him, tears streaming down her cheeks, "I love you too," she whispered back, "Thank you for being here, for taking care of me and the babies." she leans down to kiss Nicole’s head when she whimpered in confusion, looking up at her mother, “We-We’ll be okay.”

Rooster nodded, his heart heavy with worry but also filled with love and determination. He gently wiped away her tears, trying to be a source of comfort for her in this difficult moment. "We're a team," he said, "But enough of that, hospital.” he says, holding Nicole more firmly and helping Beatrice at the same time, “Hospital,hospital.”
