I keep hearing Togashi originally planned the ending of Three Kings to be an all out war arc that Kuwabara would come back for, but I can’t find anything from Togashi or anything to confirm. Is any of it true?
If not, how would you have changed the Three Kings arc?
I've heard something similar, but I've never seen Togashi saying anything like that in any interview. I doubt that's true. He wanted to end Yu Yu Hakusho right after Yusuke fought Sensui, because he was already exhausted at this point, and had already explored every possible direction for the yyh characters. So, JUMP and Togashi agreed on having six more months to conclude the series.
Maybe, that's because in Yoshirin de Pon he says he had the idea to start deconstructing the characters, something Jump turned down, so people started to assume he wanted to do an all out war similar to what he's been doing in the Succession Contest Arc in Hunter x Hunter? I have no idea how this rumor started.
"If I ever manage to have a long serialization in Jump, I will end it on my own terms". That's what the man said. I beg everyone to read the "Yoshirin de Pon!" interview to understand more about his feelings at the end of the Yu Yu Hakusho series.

I think the all out war arc with Kuwabara is something people wanted, not Togashi. At the end of the bunkoban edition (2011), when letters arrived asking for more Yu Yu Hakusho content, Togashi replied with a short comic, killing most of the main characters and showing he was really done with Yu Yu Hakusho.
I don't think I would have changed the 3 Kings Arc. Sometimes, I think I would have wanted a war, then it would be an arc focused more on Kurama, my favorite character. But, Yusuke wouldn't have much space in a cold war, full of military strategy. I believe tournaments and face-to-face confrontations suit more the spirit of Yu Yu Hakusho, and that's one of the reasons Togashi wanted to end it, to avoid repeating the same storylines over and over.
But, now I am curious, how would you all have changed the Three Kings Arc?

Hey! This is purely me and my morbid curiosity asking, but you mentioned you buy in to the pregnancy stone oops baby Gon origin story more than an actual mother. Can you elaborate, even if it falls with what others may have already brought up? I'd love to get your take! (also, I sent a review of your chapter 4 hxhbb fic, but I think it might've been eaten!)
Hi!
So, I do buy into it, somewhat! I think, for the time being, it's the best theory we have on Gon's parentage. There are a few interesting details related to it.
First off, Togashi included this woman with Ging in some of his early HxH concept drawings, from November 1997:
Tumblr media
People have speculated that the woman next to Ging might be Gon's mother, however there isn't actually conclusive evidence of this--it's just a theory. It could also be an early design concept for Mito, Menchi, or one of the other female characters from the series, as the drawing isn't labeled with a name or description like some of the others. Or, she could be a scrapped concept even if she was intended at the time to be Gon's mother, as clearly this isn't finalized in any way.
You can read about this drawing a bit more here!
However, of course within the series itself we have no info on who Gon's mother might be, and Togashi did bother to include the Pregnancy Stone card:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, an interesting connection with this is that Togashi is known to have read the BL manga Patalliro!, as he based Hiei's hair off one of the characters, Scunky:
Tumblr media
(From a doujinshi Togashi released, Yoshirin de Pon!)
There is also an unconfirmed but very reasonable theory that Killua may have been based in part of the character Maraich from Patalliro!, as the basis of both characters is similar and we know for a fact from the above image Togashi has read Patalliro!.
Now, how does this connect to the Pregnancy Stone theory? Well, Patalliro! also has mpreg as part of its storyline (with biologically male Maraich getting pregnant twice through unexplained means, with one of these pregnancies leading to a son), and considering Togashi may have used other elements from Patalliro! as inspiration... You can see where I'm going with this. I do think it's interesting he put the Pregnancy Stone card in the series to begin with, and there's also the Panda Maid card ("excellent at taking care of human children"), and Ging has used a panda plush as a substitute for himself in the Election arc. Coincidence? Hmmm...
Tumblr media
Image taken from this post, explaining more about the Pregnancy Stone theory.
My personal feelings now that I've laid all this info out are basically... I've talked a lot about how intentional Togashi's storytelling is and how much attention he pays to things, so I think he planted this knowing people would consider it a possibility, at the very least. We don't have any other theories about Gon's mom that have this much to go off of. It's possible he will reveal more info eventually and either make this more likely or explain Gon's origin in some other, totally different way, but for now I think this is compelling--there are enough pieces that it is a legitimate possibility.
I'm not someone who is interested in mpreg (or any kind of preg, for that matter, LOL), so I don't spend a lot of time thinking about this whole situation or the mechanics behind it, but I do think it would be pretty hilarious if this does canonically end up being Gon's origin story after all. Just such a wild way for Gon to come into existence. It'll be interesting to see if we ever get answers with regards to who/where Gon came from, whether it's by Pregnancy Stone or not.
It's a fun topic because it seems so goofy and farfetched initially, but the more you look at it, the more it's like, "Actually..." 🤔
(And thanks again for the review, my apologies that it took me a while to reply!)

I just found out that a scrapped YYH ending where they're all actors in a TV show was considered by Togashi but his editors shot it down, and these four pages in the Yoshirin de Pon! doujinshi are all that remains. These are up on manga websites but I had difficulty finding them because I didn't know the title, so I'm putting them here for posterity's/ease of access's sake.

Are you totally sick of my Karakura fanart? It’s ok, you can tell me. I’m an adult. 💀
Ok but anyway, here’s a redraw, or a draw this in your style…I dunno what you want to call it. But mine is in color. The original is from Togashi’s Yoshirin De Pon.

“Ready to hang out with Mamoru!”
This one is based from Yu Yu Hakusho doujin “Yoshirin de Pon!” made by Togashi. There’s one shot where YYH crews are actors. Botan’s name is Oishida Nao and Hiei’s name is Tateoka Mamoru. They’re taking pictures before their first shoot together (Yusuke vs Hiei). Mamoru (Hiei) was reading the script before he got full body painting for Jagan form lol. The one who took picture is Tendo Satoshi (Kurama).
After this shoot they hung out together in free day between their full schedules.
Tumblr media
Silly headcanons I made for them as actors:
Nao is a big fan of Mamoru.
Nao befriends with Tendo Satoshi (Kurama) and Tendo Miho (Yukina) for a long time. Before become full time actors, they’re models.
Mamoru is a famous singer, his role as Hiei is his first debut as an actor.
Mamoru’s favorite character is Botan.
Okay that’s all. this is so confusing lmao sorry.

‪Did Togashi draw that one Kurama/Karasu picture in Yoshirin De-Pon or was it drawn by a friend of his? ‬
 Hi!
Tumblr media
As far as we know, it it Togashi’s work throughout the entire comic. It looks like his art, as well. However, if anyone has any other information about this, please feel free to reply/send a message bout it!

Yeah you're right when I first Saw hiei I didn't like him and thought he was ugly too 😂 (especially his green guy form) but after maze castle I started to find hiei as a cool guy and he was kinda cute in the scene where he saves yusuke and others in maze castle and in yoshirin de Pon togashi said some viewers thought hiei was cute and I'm sure hiei got most votes cuz he is a dark character but a good big brother if it is just based on looks I'm sure 😉 kurama would win with most votes
Hiei has some cute-ish moments, but I recall Togashi not particularly liking that people make Hiei super cute.
I don’t know if Hiei being a brother really got him any votes.

What do you think of hiei's design togashi once mentioned in yoshirin de pon people would like hiei if he drew him with big eyes but I like hiei's original design what is you opinion on it
Hi anon, sorry for the late reply.Yes,Togashi said that some ppl saw or would be happy to see Hiei like that, more ‘kawai’- like.
Tumblr media
He even drew Hiei more ‘kawai’-like,with younger features.
Tumblr media
But I prefer Hiei like this,he’s a young demon but not a child anymore:
Tumblr media
In the animation,he’s gotten even more ripped:
Tumblr media
Hiei already saw some serious shit in his life,he’s got a Jagan implanted,he mastered the dragon technique,he’s in a quest for his sister,he fights in tournaments...So,in my opinion,‘kawai’- like Hiei belongs to cute and funny art  and doujinshi.

Mukuro: inspired by Kushana (Nausicaä), created for Hiei, Togashi’s favorite character and other curiosities...
Tumblr media
Q: About the character
A (Togashi): The name comes from "body" of a cadaver (note: the kanji 軀 - mukuro - means body, corpse). A character that was created while thinking: “if Hiei were to go out with someone (date), what kind of partner would be good?”
Source: “Yu Yu Hakusho Official Characters Book Spirit World Directory - Reikai Records Vol.2 Main Character Setting Comment”, Shueisha, 2005.
Tumblr media
☆ Who was your favorite character?
° Togashi: Itsuki and Mukuro. I wanted to draw more details about Itsuki’s distorted mental aspect and how Mukuro was abused in the past. Oh, is it an  emotional attachment, I wonder? By the way, the model for Mukuro is Nausicaä's female army general of Torumekia (laughs).
Note: He’s referring to Kushana as she is the female general of Torumekia, also lost part of her body (an arm, Ghibli animated version) and their character designs are alike.

From what I understand Yu Yu Hakusho was really big in the doujinshi community at the time. I was curious if you knew anything about what that community was like, or how Togashi interacted with it. I figure he must've been somewhat aware of it if he handed out his letter to fans at comiket. Thanks for posting all this great information!
Even nowadays, you'll find many Yu Yu Hakusho booths at the Comiket with merch and doujinshi. Also, good cosplayers at the cosplay area. I feel the YYH community is still huge.
But at the time of the serialization, there were many circles, people discussing the chapters in real time, and even famous manga artists like Yun Kouga drawing doujinshi under pen names. Moreover, in an era when internet was not a big deal yet, it was a great place to fans and artists come together.
I honestly don't know much about the community, as I've only visited the convention many years later and never applied for any circle. I vaguely remember that when an article about the characters from the Black Chapter Arc came out in 1993, with Togashi's comments, there was a fuss over Itsuki and Sensui. The comments about Itsuki said: "Itsuki was almost defeated by Sensui, but after that, they started going out".
At the time, the MiG-21 Special circle published this doujinshi called "WSJ - Yu Yu Secret File", with reprints of the original articles published in the Weekly Shounen Jump, and highlighting the verb tsukiai "つきあい".
Tumblr media
It's a tricky verb, as its meaning depends on the context. It can simply mean "to accompany someone" without any form of romantic relationship, but it's mainly used when you're going out on a date with someone. The doujinshi authors mention that the intimacy level of this "going out" lies in the fact Itsuki calls Sensui by his first name, Shinobu. So the "going out" verb may have a romantic undertone.
There was also a famous Yu Yu Hakusho Chronology with dates and years created by fans, based on Itsuki and Sensui's first meeting the day before Jun Togawa first appeared on "Hit Studio". It's really interesting, I may translate it some day. Even though that performance really happened on a certain date, I bet Togashi didn't pay much attention to that level of details.
Other things like changes from the magazine version to the comic edition were also heavily discussed. An example is the "Shinobu Sensui Death Scene Uncensored Version".
I feel the yyh fans have a great eye for detail and scrutinize everything. The contents of the doujinshi have always been amazing, as well the fanfics. Sometimes, I feel like reading an official story.
However, I don't know much about Togashi interacting with the community. I was told (can't confirm because I wasn't there) that when they handed over Yoshirin de Pon! at the Cokimet in 1994, it was a restricted area. The organizers only authorized the line a few minutes before. The copies ran out in a few minutes and many couldn't get one.
Togashi and his brother also joined Kazushi Hagiwara's doujinshi circle around 1997. But, I have no idea how it was. If he talked to the fans or so. There's a photo of him with two HxH cosplayers in one of the HxH volumes, so he's probably interacted a little bit with the fans.
When asked about the Comiket in the "Yoshirin de Pon" interview, Togashi replied he's a fan of parodies, but values more those who are creating original content. He's a very reserved person, so I could be wrong, but I've the impression he didn't interact directly with the doujinshi community. But, he's definitely aware of it.
Sorry, I couldn't help much!

Hiei and Yukina have different mothers (?)
Togashi's blunder? Yes it is, and it has been corrected in newer editions of the manga!
In this scene, from episode 26 of the anime, Hiei tells Yusuke that he and Yukina had different mothers.
Tumblr media
Source: Yu Yu Hakusho Episode 26 ~ "Invitees To The Dark Tournament" (1992). Rescue Yukina Arc.
But then, when the "Demon World Tournament Saga" begins, we find out that Hiei and Yukina are actually twins, and they have the same mother: Hina. How's that even possible!?
This wasn't a blunder from the animation staff, as this line was taken directly from the manga series, chapter 51.
Tumblr media
Source: Mangadex. This english translation is not a very good one, but the part about the mother is correct.
When episode 26 was aired on TV in 1992, the manga hadn't reached the Makai edition yet. The last saga began to be published in Weekly Shounen Jump magazine in 1994.
But, when the kanzenban, bunkoban and jump remix editions of the manga began to be published in the 2000s, this line about the "different mother" has been completely erased.
Tumblr media
Source: Chapter 51. "I Must Get Stronger!!". Tankoubon, volume 6 (1992) VS Jump Remix edition, volume 3 (2022). The SJR photo was shared by @naitemokawaii4.
Well, Togashi said in the Yoshirin de Pon! interview (1994) that he had asked the editorial departmental to finish Yu Yu Hakusho after Sensui's fight. He was obviously very tired, physically and mentally. I think that when he drew the Makai Saga in 1994, he had entirely forgotten about this "different mother" thing from the Rescue Yukina Arc, published in Weekly Shounen Jump in 1991.
However, it's surprising that even his editor didn't notice the error. A lot of mistakes are edited or corrected from the magazine to the comic books, but in this case, the error went unnoticed by everyone. An example is the obscene trees of the Demon World, edited in the comic book, check out the post about Shinobu Sensui Death Scene (Uncensored Version).
Anyway, it was corrected afterwards, and if the anime gets a remake one day, Hiei's speech will probably be cut. Despite the correction, I've always loved the theories about this issue. My favorite is that Hiei was lying to Yusuke to cut the conversation short.
Foreign Editions:
I was checking the chinese editions, and this error was corrected in the kanzenban:
Tumblr media
Source: Chapter 51. Tankoubon, volume 6 VS kanzenban, volume 5. Hong Kong chinese edition.
So, be sure to check if your local editor corrected it. Many countries have been reprinting the manga in new versions. In France, the 12-volume bunkoban has been released under the name of "Star Edition", by Editions Kana. Other countries like Mexico, Spain and Italy have published the 15-volume kanzenban. Sometimes, the editors just copy and past the old translations from the tankoubon to the newer versions, without revising them.
Other minor errors have been corrected in japanese reprints, but most of them are just chinese characters misspellings. For example, in one of the pages of volume 3 (tankoubon), Kurama's name is written with a different kanji. But, that kind of misprint is not noticeable when translated to other languages.
The Hiei's janken mistake was also very famous in Japan, but this one got an apology from Togashi himself in WSJ magazine.
