I really do love that we get this moment of Vegapunk apologizing for his mistakes. As a character that has been shown to place scientific advancement above (for the most part) any potential negative side effects or outcomes, it is nice to see him acknowledge that own flaw within himself (even if it did come too late).

It really does speak to Vegapunk's own willful ignorance that he never thought that the same government that has commissioned him to create living weapons that could only be controlled by a select few might also try to get their hands on the very powerful energy source he was working on to power even larger, more devastating weaponry.

Granted is doesn't appear that Vegapunk knows who exactly took a piece of the Mother Flame, nor does he know who has the Ancient Weapon. But I think that speaks even further to his ignorance and naivety that he doesn't even seem to speculate that the government that has forbidden anyone from learning about the Void Century (which is where the nearly all of the knowledge about the Ancient weapons come from) are the ones how have the weapon in their arsenal. (It also could be that he didn't want to speculate about that on a broadcast going out to the entire world so as not to cause a panic.)

Also, other people have already made this comparison, but the Mother Flame and how it was used to power an island destroying weapon is (in my opinion) a very clear allegory for nuclear power/energy. A power source capable of providing vast amounts of energy worldwide, only for it to fall into the hands of a militant and corrupt government, and have it instead be used as a weapon of mass destruction. If that's not a nuclear power allegory then I don't know what is.

I really do love what Oda has done with Vegapunk as a character. It is such excellent commentary on how blindly creating for a government entity leads to more problems than solutions, and the few solutions that do exist end up becoming double edged swords used to power nuclear levels of destruction.

One Piece Chapter 1116 Spoilers

Damn, is Crocodile in a dark room or something? Surely Buggy must be listening with him too right?

From Vegapunk’s words, Joyboy letting the world sink more is part of the reason why it’s so hard to judge who was right and who was wrong in the past war.

It sounds like one of those dilemmas where a great sacrifice has to be made for some greater achievement. Hundreds of years ago the world sank and probably killed millions of people. Then in our current time, the Roger Pirates also seem to be following in Joyboy’s footsteps and letting the world sink. Are they committing a sin by potentially letting millions of people die?

The way Vegapunk calls out the Roger Pirates for not acting feels similar to the way Buggy was angry at Shanks for not acting as well.

I get the feeling Buggy is the only Roger Pirate (besides Toki) who was left out of the loop. Even now, he doesn’t understand why Shanks didn’t go after the One Piece until now.

But I wonder why Buggy was purposefully left out? Shanks definitely knows something about the truth, that’s why he didn’t go after the One Piece. It could be that Roger told Shanks, and he left it up to Shanks to relay the information to Buggy. But Shanks decided not to tell Buggy, even if that made Buggy mad at him.

There probably will be a good reason why they didn’t act or say anything…It could be that the other option was much worse and they chose the lesser of two evils, or they chose to sacrifice many people for a greater good.

Chapter 1116 Spoilers

We finally have confirmation that Imu is immortal, or that at the very least that they have been alive since the Void Century. Most people already had guessed this was the case (myself included) but it's nice to see it be confirmed, even in a more implicit way like this.

Also, why the fuck does Imu have a portrait of Nefertari D. Lili?? Their past relationship and connection has to be one of the most intriguing things in the series (to me) aside from who exactly Joyboy is. And this panel is only adding fuel to the fire.

If I were to make a guess, it would be that Imu and Lili were at some point friends/allies, but when Lili stared seeing corruption within Imu and the newly formed word government, she left. Maybe Imu killed her and that's why she never returned to Alabasta, or many she went off to try to find a way to stop them.

We really don't have a lot of information to go off of, both Imu and Lili are still relativity unknown, so I could be ( and probably am) way off the mark. But, it's still fun to speculate on how exactly these characters are tied together, and I'm looking forward seeing how it unfolds in the future.

One Piece Chapter 1116 a few little spoilery musings (very few).

We're gonna get the Stussy and Monet parallels, right? Ain't we? Someone must've spoken about it. Oda does let his damsels tragically die for the cause every now and then. OR maybe it will be an evolution of the story. She doesn't die like Monet, cos' Edison (mirroring Usopp's words in Wano, although they weren't directed Stussy's way) urges Stussy to live after the sacrifice. Quite the opposite of what Doflamingo tasked Monet with.

However, I think Kaku might kill her. Or use her for what he needs and then wipe her out (I don't mind being wrong). Also, Imu with the picture of Lili, I think, rather than Vivi. Hmmmm!

so i'm guessing Imu was in love (/obsessed? - i question the healthiness of their relationship) with Nefertari D Lili? and thats why he's after Vivi now - that's been the most likely theory for a while now, the portrait only reinforces it

I decided to re-read Marineford and let me tell you that, with everything else that has come to light till chapter 1116, it's even more painful.

Now that we know how much Ace was actually loved and how impactful his existence was it makes me even more sad that he still didn't see himself worth it. Like, yeah you can get mad at him from turning around and facing Akainu, even after everything that everyone did to save him, but let's be for reals; If someone insulted the person who gave you actual stability in your life, wouldn't you confront them too?

I'm not saying he didn't somewhat had that with Luffy and Sabo and, sometimes, the bandits and Makino, but it wasn't the same. I think Ace was more focused on surviving and making sure his brothers did too, than actually living. Hence why i think that's part of the reason they wanted to become pirates.

And Kuma, fucking christ, Kuma. That his last act, of what he thought was going to be his final days at being himself and not a fully-turned-machine controlled by the govermment, was trying to make sure the Strawhats made it out of Sabaody alive is so fucking heartbreaking, because he valored freedom so much he defied the world government—in spite of what could happen to him if word went around—and he still is. He is still trying to make sure his dear daughter gets to live the life she deserves after everything the w.g. put them through, after his body is literally falling appart. Kizaru and Sentomaru's part on all of this tug on my heart strings a bit, too, because Oda showed that they actually cared for them on their own ways. I have more sympathy for Sentomaru than Kizaru, i'm not gonna lie, i just cant have that much sympathy for someone who can make a change, have the power to back it up, and do nothing to make it happen (...kinda side eyeing you too, Garp).

I may be able to understand the motives and how they try to make up for it, and i can fully admit that their characters are pretty well thought of and they're definitely not simple, but that doesn't mean i have to like what they did, either.

I do have more thoughts on everything but i'm already stretching this post too much for my liking (...i ramble a lot about these pirates) but anyways; 0/10 too much hurt, would not recommend doing the same.
