Day 1 - Painland Week

Day 1 of Painland Week 2024: August 5th - August 11th by @painlandweek

Prompt: Language of Love

“And that is another case closed,” Edwin says, moving the card to the correct column. “Charles, you were brilliant. Very good job.”

“Crystal, add another one to the list.” Niko doesn’t raise her head from the sofa, so the words are a bit muffled, but Crystal nods, busying herself with her phone.

“Will you explain what it is you two are doing? You’ve been talking about this list for days now,” complains Edwin, not liking the feeling of missing pieces of information.

“Not yet, we will explain when we have significant statistical data,” Crystal says cryptically. Her smirk only makes Edwin’s unease grow.

Charles puts a comforting hand on his shoulder and laughs. “I’m sure it’s nothing to be worried about, mate.”

Crystal and Niko nod at each other in silence, and the former focuses back on her phone.

Edwin’s eyebrows furrow. It’s been six months since they came back from Port Townsend, they have managed to save Niko from the Neitherlands and have created this new normality in which Niko and Crystal live next door to their office in London, go to school in the mornings and solve cases with them in the afternoon. And while it is probably true that this secret list they are keeping is something harmless - otherwise they would be more secretive about it - he has a bad feeling about it.

“Crystal, I’ll have you know that people have been speaking behind my back for the entirety of my human life and I am not keen on repeating that experience now with people I consider actual friends.” He knows it is a very low blow to use their friendship as a leverage like this, but he is tired of not understanding.

It has the expected result, because Crystal grimaces, and Niko’s lips turn downwards. The two exchange another look and Crystal huffs. “Ok, fine, I’ll tell you. But you are no fun.”

He can’t help the pleased smile from his face.

“We are keeping score of how many times a day you two say ‘I love you’ to one another,” Crystal continues. “For now, Charles is winning.”

“What?” He and Charles say at the same time.

“Yeah, look,” says Crystal, turning her phone to show a blank screen with two columns marked ‘Edwin’ and ‘Charles’. There are twelve tick marks under Charles’ name and eight under Edwin’s.

“I know you don’t like me very much, Crystal, but I didn’t think you would be so cruel.” Edwin told them all in confidence about his unrequited feelings and Charles’ response that nothing would have to change, because he thought it was fair, and to avoid awkwardness with Crystal in case she and Charles wanted to continue to pursue their relationship. It was not something he thought would be used against him.

“Didn’t you hear what I just said? Charles is winning.”

Charles levels her with a stare, as if in warning, slowly removing his hand from Edwin’s shoulder - he pretends not to be disappointed.

Niko, who had been silent until then, stands up solemnly. “We love you, and we want you to be happy, but your dancing around each other is getting worse every day, and we think you need a push.”

“I don’t understand, surely I did not say that I love Charles eight times since you started that list.” He doesn’t add that most definitely Charles did not because they all know how things stand between them.

“There are more ways to say ‘I love you’ than just the words,” Niko continues. “We have been observing you, your love language is words of affirmation” - she points to Edwin - “while Charles uses all of them except that one. This is why you don’t understand each other.”

Edwin has never been more confused in his life. “What is a love language?”

“It’s the way you express your love, there is gift giving, words of affirmation, physical touch, acts of services, and quality time,” she counts with her fingers. “For example, you just complimented Charles on a job well done, that’s ‘word of affirmation’, and yesterday when we were leaving, he asked you to read to him while you two rested, that’s ‘quality time’.”

“Two days ago, at the art exhibition, Charles made me buy three art books he thought you would like, ‘gift giving’,” Crystal continues. “And I am sure I don’t need to explain ‘physical touch’, right?” she looks pointedly at his shoulder where Charles’ hand had been just a moment prior.

Edwin smooths out a nonexistent wrinkle from his jacket with his hands. “That means nothing. We are best friends, of course we show various forms of affection to one another. It is not a romantic thing to comfort someone or buy them a gift.”

Niko takes his hands in her own to stop their fidgeting, which he is grateful for because it gives him something to focus on other than the way his head is spinning.

“You’ve been best friends for an entire lifetime,” says Crystal, “and you still can’t go one day without swearing eternal devotion to one another. We were just trying to give you two some solid evidence to mull over, you are detectives, deduce what you want.” With that, she shoves her phone in Charles’ hand and turns to the door. “Come on, Niko, let’s go to sleep, it’s late and I still have some readings to do for school.”

Niko squeezes Edwin’s hands reassuringly one more time before letting go and following Crystal out of the door, with a cheerful “see you tomorrow”.

“I apologise, Charles, I did not anticipate they would try to pressure you like this when I told them about my feelings. I just meant to clear the air between me and Crystal, to explain my initial jealousy.”

Charles is unusually still, looking at Crystal’s phone in his hands.

“Are you okay?”

At his concerned tone, the easy smile instantly reappears in Charles’ face. “Sure, aces.”

“So, you are not cross at me?”

“Course not, why would I be?” Charles continues, but he does not meet his eyes.

“I will talk to Niko tomorrow, and try to get them to drop this.”

Charles looks distant, like he is not really listening to him. He decides to give him some space and goes to check their new potential cases on the board in order to change the subject.

“What do you think about this haunted house? It’s probably just children pulling pranks, but maybe we should check it out?”

“They’re right, aren’t they?” Charles says.

“Who? The children?”

Edwin turns to look at him, confused, and the smile that appears on Charles’ face is the most beautiful thing he has ever seen. He would clutch his heart if he still had one.

“I noticed it too, I just didn’t want to stop and think about what it meant, but that’s not fair.”

“I- what?” Edwin’s mind seems to have stopped working.

Charles looks sheepish. “I have been more flirty and affectionate towards you after, you know…” He doesn’t say Hell, because it’s a word they try not to pronounce too often, but he doesn’t need to.

“Charles, please, let’s not reopen this discussion. Yes, you love me, as a friend, I have never doubted it. It is different from the way I love you and things are perfect the way they are.”

“No, that’s the thing. I am not good with words, but I have been thinking about it, and I have been showing it, with actions, I just didn’t realise I was doing it until they pointed it out. I will have to buy Crystal and Niko the biggest cake ever.”

This is the last straw, the prank has been going on far too long. “So what, now you are buying them a gift, in this stupid scenario they planted in your head does that mean you are in love with them too?”

Charles seems to break out of a daze at the words. “No, of course not. I don’t spend every moment of every day thinking about what could surprise them, or make them happy, or what new things we could try together, that only applies to you. It has always applied to you and it always will.”

Edwin is having an increasingly hard time in not letting hope consume him. “Please, let’s be serious.”

“But I am!” Charles shakes his head, walking closer. “When you confessed to me, I didn’t really know what ‘being in love’ meant, but I do know this feeling. And maybe if I stop pretending that nothing changed, I can find the right words to express it, too.”

“Is this a very elaborate way to ask me to hug you more in return?”

Charles grins mischievously. “I mean… I wouldn’t complain.”

BTS Group Energy Analysis (2024)

[The Group Energy Analysis covers all members of a group, their energetic projections, and how they connect. For this reading, due to their separation, I focused mainly on the members as individuals, with just an overview of collective projected energy and external stimulation or guidance. This spread is an original design by me. This reading lasted 1 hour.]

The overall energy surrounding the group as of the time of this reading, with Fork In The Road, Exchanging Gifts, and Round and Round, it feels like there is a split in the energy and both sides are spinning in their own directions while still, individually, putting pieces together of themselves. I believe this split in energy is coming from the fact that Jin is out of the military while the rest are still serving. As with Exchanging Gifts, Jin has popped out of the box ready to greet the world and share his work in person, while the others are still sharing with the world but from a distance.

It’s an interesting back-and-forth that seems to be centered around what they are able to give themselves at this time alongside what they are giving to the world.

Off to the side, there is another set of cards representing a higher influential energy around the group — you can think of it as what is affecting them from the outside while the previous set more so reflects what they are generating on their own. Here they have Dynamic, Alchemy, and Change. Everything is in a state of transition, actively crossing a threshold, which may stem from or contribute to that split energy that they are projecting.

There’s a significance to the number 8 here. There is an 8 on Alchemy, while the number 12 and 23 appear on the other two cards. These numbers progress into each other, 123, but combine individually to create 3 and 5, which come together to create 8. This, along with the number 8 itself, or the infinity symbol, gives me the image of cells dividing, or two separate forms coming together to create something new. Both ways, something is being created or expanded on. I can see the split energy, spinning in opposite directions, eventually coming together again but it would form something different than what it was originally. It’s not quite a rebirth of the group, more so a revision, reconstruction, or realignment.

It’s interesting to see this alongside past states, especially with how they were separated on a higher level from the soul body so that they could self-actualize and fully form as individual souls, then experience a full separation from the public and each other, to then be, eventually, brought back together, in the same form, but as something different, something bigger. So, the state of Dynamic, Alchemy, and Change is being experienced both individually and within the group as a whole.

For the main part of the reading, because they are, with intention, separated, I won’t look over the whole of the spread and will focus on them individually. Even with Jimin and Jungkook physically, and consciously closer, more often together than the others, they are reflecting the same energetic disconnect which is supporting personal development right now.

Side note — Jimin and Jungkook’s connection currently may reflect the flip-flop of connections through the layers of consciousness as well, meaning that while they are disconnected on a higher level now, they most likely are very closely connected and connecting to each other consciously and physically to make up for it. To look into this, I have done another relationship reading for them, as well as an Elemental Alignment for Jin to see where their energies stand within this current state, with Jin an individual physically separated from the group, and Jimin and Jungkook separated from the group, but close to each other. Those will be posted soon.

Jin

King of Pentacles + Authority (Mars in Capricorn) + Mercury

Jin’s current position is very positive, though it does feel a bit heavy in terms of the responsibility or work that is suggested between Authority and King of Pentacles. Like the image of Authority, Jin has fully returned to the world and has faced it head on from the second he was discharged. It was right back to work, something familiar, but for the most part, completely on his own. He’s representing himself in a big way now, in a much bigger way than before with his solo work, but he’s also the first member of BTS to be welcomed back. He’s also representing them, laying the groundwork, carving out the path for them all to re-enter through.

There’s so much assurance around him, so much that is guaranteed, nothing needs to be fought for or really worried about, he is the King of Pentacles here, the absolute pinnacle of reward and security. It’s a sure thing, but I can’t help but feel a bit nervous when looking directly at the face of Authority. Everything is prepared and locked-in. He’s all dressed and ready to go, but there’s a sort of anticipation there, as if what he’s holding in his hand, presented to someone in front of him, could be rejected. It won’t be, but understandably there seems to be just a bit of nervousness around that possibility.

Mercury being here in such a big way really puts focus on communication and being a sort of a broadcaster. This brings to mind his solo work in terms of what he shares artistically, but there’s also this aspect I’m seeing of “talking on the phone” or “talking through the radio,” which I think may just come down to how he communicates and connects with the public overall. It’s a huge point here, a huge emphasis on this being a very prominent time, potentially the first time ever, that he, all on his own, has a direct, unobstructed line of communication with the world as Kim Seokjin.

He’s really stepping into something here, with a lot of confidence in what HE is able to do and say, but there is a bit of nerves around how it will be received.

Hoseok

The Moon + Idealism (Sun in Aquarius) + Quarrel (Mars in Cancer) + Jupiter + New Moon

Since Hoseok is on his way to finishing up his military service soon, I figured I should do him second. Here, he’s really projecting the elements of that split energy that I was seeing for the whole group, which could be an effect of his previous position as the Throat Chakra in the Soul Body, being the one to give and receive the energy of the group, or this is purely just his position on his own as he is in a state of transition as he prepares to end his service. The end of his service seems to carry a lot more meaning for him personally.

The enlistment period has shown up in many readings I have done (not posted) as being a more physical/conscious version of what was experienced in the dismantling of the Soul Body, and therefore, the time going in and the time coming out can be somewhat chaotic energetically, mentally, and emotionally, and can contribute to that anxiety or anticipation for the return.

The cards are interesting, contained on both ends by the images of a Full Moon and a New Moon, again emphasizing a period of transition, one that may be affecting him more emotionally. I’ve seen before for Hoseok how his energy and emotions mix quite a bit and can often put strain on his nervous system. Back in the day, this was showing up as emotional flux and physical health issues, but here it could just be emotion.

I’m seeing the ups and downs through the cards like this:

IDEALISM!!! quarrel… JUPITER!!! new moon… SUN!!! mars… AQUARIUS!!! cancer… FULL MOON!!! new moon…

Between the images of Idealism and Quarrel, I see Hoseok finding the ideal version of himself (Sun in Aquarius) and trying to pull that out of himself, trying to bring the most vivid and most authentic version of himself forward along with the help of his personal Guides who fuel the process from above, but then he (in the image of Quarrel) runs into his own reflection, a double of himself coming from the opposite direction that he now has to fight.

With the significance of Aquarius and Cancer in these cards, I wanted to see if he had anything in Cancer in his chart; he doesn’t, but I did take notice of the opposition between his Taurus Moon and Scorpio Jupiter. An expansion of self in the realm of the “undesirable” opposing his own personal comfort and emotional stubbornness. It’s like he expands on himself, makes himself glow from the inside, but as soon as that light starts to reach the outside world, he pulls it back. This is most obvious to me between the drop from Sun to Mars.

The Sun rules Leo, a Fire Sign, but a Fire Sign that, when in its higher development, doesn’t actually contain Fire so much as it contains warmth and light, like the Sun itself as we experience it here on Earth. Leo, unlike Aries and Sagittarius that always carry the element of Fire, mirrors the Sun as it emits its own light and warm energy through personal expression, either creative or emotional. But Mars, Mars rules Aries, a Cardinal Fire Sign, the hottest of the hot. It burns no matter what, hence why it needs to be contained or at least monitored, otherwise it can contribute to destructive behaviors, or what others will deem to be “too much.” The drop from “SUN!!”! to “mars…” is like “I CAN/WANT TO DO THIS!!! but they won’t like it…” It’s very image based, where his persona may have overtaken his sense of self and I feel like this comes down to the issue of “Hope” being something/someone he wants to be but is not, and he’s still concerned about “breaking the illusion” without being there to quickly blow it up and put the mask on again.

I feel like that was something he was meant to ponder on in his time away, but even now there’s still a lot of back-and-forth within himself. Showing the Sun and the Full Moon at the same time would be quite interesting as we would see a truly dualistic person shining, but both the Moon and Sun are “popped” by Mars and the New Moon. The visual of this “pop” is more clear between Jupiter, who expands or blows up that bubble (could relate to Libra/7th House conformity and assimilation, pleasing others by distorting your own personality), followed by the New Moon card where it appears as if the blue and orange of Jupiter’s image have flooded out and left a void behind.

With Idealism, and this constant up and down, I feel like he is being guided by his personal Guides all the time to be inspired and to shine the way that he wants to, but he keeps halting. That Taurus Moon of his keeps clinging to not what he likes but what he finds familiar and comfortable while his Jupiter, which shares space with Pluto and his North Node, is trying to drive him forward and outward, potentially through a process of self-destruction or self-deconstruction, specifically deconstruction of the outer personality, the persona.

This is putting into my head the idea of someone who has thick skin, as in they can take a lot of bullshit from people and not be affected. They have thick skin, so they can take it, but they built that thick skin specifically because they know they can NOT take it. There’s a deep, deep sensitivity in there somewhere that is being guarded, but it’s really weighing things down in terms of his personal progression. It feels like it’s something that can cause and has caused him to fall out of his own alignment before. This could give reason to his vulnerability in the soul body in the past, as well as his difficulty in regulating himself on his own, both on a higher level and on a conscious level. He’s a very, very strong person mentally, but there’s a reason for that, and that reason seems to be picking at him right now as he prepares for another transition in his physical life, another shake up as he completes his enlistment.

Namjoon

Page of Pentacles + Three of Swords + Affair (Venus in Leo) + Fifth House

Namjoon seems to have quite a bit going on creatively within himself, which leads me to believe he’s either working on something right now or is currently “taking notes” on his inspiration for work he will do later. The Page of Pentacles, Affair, and 5th House all scream artistry, creative flux, and seeds being planted for something that will be birthed, put on display, and performed at some point.

There’s a bit of a pulse to this that gives me the feeling of something or someone being revived, which takes us into the Three of Swords with the image of the heart being stabbed by the swords. This image is very different from the traditional image as in the traditional image, the heart is directly being stabbed, while here it appears like lights reflecting off of an image smeared into a window. There’s no stabbing, there’s no direct pain or hurt, but there is an illumination of pain or emotional turmoil happening, suggesting deep self-reflection, potentially even self-dissection, that is contributing to this immense creative inspiration.

Yoongi

Three of Cups + Inspiration (Mercury in Pisces) + Principle (Jupiter in Sagittarius) + Ascendant + Solar Eclipse

No surprise here that Pisces Man Min Yoongi is all up in his spiritual shenanigans while still denying it at the same time. This was such a thing back in the day with him, where it was so clear that he was receiving very direct guidance but was either not sharing it or pushing it down within himself. These cards come with warnings and messages specifically for him, which leads me to believe his cosmic answering machine is full and some of it is leaking into this reading.

The Three of Cups is more reflective currently of his conscious state, happy with the current position, but there’s a “more” behind him somewhere, things he’s dreaming about or envisioning, but for some reason he’s not taking action with it. Maybe it’s something he is saving for the group, but one of the messages is for him to be self-focused now and to focus on personal creative drive. There’s a message in here about him opening up as a conduit as well.

There’s a lot more here, but most of it does seem to be more direct and personal, so I can’t get into all of it, but for sure, without a doubt, there’s strong stimulation to the Crown and Third Eye, with open receptivity and projection through the Throat and Heart Chakras. I believe there’s effort in remaining “grounded” in the lower chakras, but in that, he seems to be ignoring or putting aside what is meant for him.

Jimin

Five of Swords + Companionship (Moon in Libra) + First Quarter Moon

Jimin’s been showing a lot of odd inner conflict for a while, and I think I touched on it a bit in previous readings I’ve posted (I can’t access them right now, so I’m not sure), and here it’s no different.

Companionship is the strongest energy coming through showing a connection, which I’m assuming is with Jungkook since they’re enlisted together, that tethers from his internal space to the external space. In other words, this Companionship is the only thing keeping him grounded right now. There’s a lot of turmoil in the mind as shown with the Five of Swords and the First Quarter Moon where a lot of what is around him is not comfortable or secure. It feels like the people at the top of the Companionship card are looking both ways to keep an eye on Five of Swords and First Quarter Moon, which can combine here to represent paranoia through a mix of external observation and personal emotion/fear.

Basically, it’s coming off as he doesn’t feel particularly safe where he is, and therefore his Companionship is the safe space. Again, I’m assuming this is purely Jungkook just because of how they’ve always shown to connect through protection and nurturing, but given that there are multiple people on the top side, I feel that there are also some new friends who help him to feel safe where he is. Just by the card, I’d say Jimin and Jungkook are the hands at the bottom, while the four above represent new people who understand the fear or have the same fear, and look out for each other.

I’m not entirely sure what it is that he’s afraid of exactly, there’s plenty unfortunately, but right now, it does just seem to be a matter of the mind. He’s afraid of something happening, he’s not afraid because something already happened. There’s a constant nervousness that, just going on what I’ve seen in other readings for the two, he is not sharing directly with Jungkook but Jungkook can probably see it and therefore stays close to him as best he can.

The Five of Swords is the most pressing for me as this contains other people, outside people, other people’s words and actions that he has observed. This observation is then picked up and projected into the First Quarter Moon where intuition is active but not always clear. This means you can see the potential of something happening, but rather than just being mindful, it turns into an anticipation for that thing to happen, leading to fear and paranoia.

What’s interesting is that the people in the image of the Five of Swords are looking everywhere but right at us as the audience, which makes me feel like no one is saying or doing anything directly to him, but they could be saying things about him, or making jokes, or talking about things they’ve done, and all of it is picking at anxiety that he isn’t quick to share, but seems to be readable enough in others around him who are actively trying to keep him comfortable and safe.

I also think he went into his service with this anxiety as it is very deeply rooted. There are layers to it, but I think his worry through observation could have come from other people, as in, someone who’s already served relaying their experience, perhaps giving him a warning about certain things, and thus carried that with him, only to have it affirmed by the words or actions of others. Again, it’s not been directly toward him as he is well protected, but it’s like he’s hypervigilant because he feels the danger is near.

So, yeah, for the most part he’s totally fine, just anxious as hell around certain people, and therefore chooses to focus on and hang around people represented in Companionship. Again, Companionship itself, with the Moon in Libra, is focused on emotional and physical comfort through friendship and expression.

Taehyung

Four of Swords + The Empress + Publicity (Jupiter in Leo) + Eris

There’s a very interesting pattern between all of these cards that puts focus on Taehyung potentially self-reflecting on his own status, or his position in the world, what he does with it, and what he wants to do with it going forward. There’s a very Hermit-esque feel to the Four of Swords here as someone is shown to be meditating or in a state of contemplation on a cliffside — not the top of the mountain like The Hermit.

The Hermit goes very high up to observe other people, to observe the world, and from there comes to understand where he fits into all of it, then decides whether or not he wants to come back down and rejoin the world or remain alone. Here, this person has only gone halfway up, not to observe the world, but to simply get away from it. He’s using, seemingly, his enlistment as a time to isolate from the world, or at least from what he used to find familiar, and is very deliberately trying to “grow up” and grow into himself more.

Eris is a little odd here as she comes with jealousy and spite towards those who don’t include her in their fun. I think somewhere, in some way, he feels left out or forgotten, and is now really reflecting on The Empress (what he creates) and Publicity (how people receive it).

There seems to be a lot of questions he’s asking himself, and it really feels like, somewhat similar to what I saw with Hoseok, he’s meeting his own reflection and is trying to see if he lives up to what he knows he can be. For sure, he’s using his time for personal expansion, but like I said, the Eris part gives an odd feeling to it, suggesting anger or frustration within the self, with himself, but it’s being directed at other people, or just the world in general. Capricorn vibes.

Jungkook

Nine of Pentacles + Charity (Saturn in Cancer) + Pluto

Jungkook has to have the simplest set of cards and the easiest flowing energy out of all of them. It’s so step-by-step, beginning-middle-end, here it feels like he’s just sitting on a floaty and riding a current through a river. The Nine of Pentacles is the overall, baseline state of being. He’s in a very independent, successful, and well-rewarded state. He’s in his harvest season with the seeds he’s planted with his solo work. He’s very comfortable and confident in this as the Nine of Pentacles would suggest. While he may express concern or doubt about his own success, he knows very well that he can not fail from the position that he is in now, he has built something up that can’t be undone very easily — he sees this for both the group and himself, but humbly he will still “doubt” himself.

Charity with Saturn in Cancer is his current position physically and mentally. The assured confidence and growth of the Nine of Pentacles has put him in the position of the older woman in the picture who is carrying her children away from a rigid and harsh institution that was not good for them. This feels directly connected to Jimin’s Companionship card. It seems in this position, they’ve swapped places in the sense that Jimin was always more nurturing and caring toward Jungkook, but over recent years, and very much so now, the roles have switched to Jungkook being more of the leader in their dynamic, the protector.

The woman carrying her child, Jungkook carrying Jimin, is running toward Pluto with the assistance, guidance, and protection of angels, which feels a lot like the four people in the top half of the Companionship card. So, not real angels here (although I’m sure they’re well protected on that level as well), but like actual people, helping them along, helping them stay safe. Pluto itself marks the end, marks personal death that leads to a new beginning.

On some level, in spite of the physical and mental strain of enlistment, it almost feels like he’s taking it as a vacation, comforted by his “harvest” or the reward and success he’s seeing his work and the group’s work while he is enlisted. Because of this, he feels he can put energy and attention into being a protector. He’s eager to get it over with, as suggested with the woman running toward Pluto, but he’s pretty much alright. From what I can see here there’s no big mental or emotional strain on him, other than any pressure or upset feeling he may have from seeing someone he cares about be anxious or uncomfortable, trying to alleviate that without really knowing what the issue is.

With that Pluto there, I have a feeling he’ll come back from enlistment in a big way, with even more confidence and self-assurance. He was already becoming quite bold over the last few years, but I feel like he’s shedding the last of his old skin within this process. The affirmation of the Nine of Pentacles is really giving him a sense of strong foundation to stand on, securing a sense of personal freedom that he’s been trying to achieve for a very long time.

Rules

This is a Nalu based event. Everything created for this exchange must focus on Natsu and Lucy, whether platonic or romantic.

For administration purposes, you must have a Tumblr account to participate and you must have DMs on so that the organisers can contact you. This simply makes contact and coordination easier.

NSFW fanworks or requests are not allowed as part of this event

If you find yourself unable to complete your gift or you wish to withdraw from the event, you must contact one of the organisers to ensure that your recipient receives a gift from someone else. Failure to do so will get you barred from any future allaboutnalu hosted gift exchanges.

If you change your url between sign up and the end of the gift exchange you must contact us to ensure we can keep track of our participants.

AI, stolen, or traced works are not allowed as part of this exchange.

Use of official art must be transformative. Manga colourings, edits, or gifsets are allowed but must be transformative and not traced or unedited.

Until you reveal your gift, please do not disclose who your gift recipient is in any public capacity (i.e. on social media or in any discord server with a public invite).

All gifts must be new and created for the event. Dedicating a new chapter to an already existing fic does not count as a gift.

All gifts must be created to a standard that you would normally consider as “finished”.

Do not deliberately break your recipients DNW (do not want) guidelines.

All gifts must be posted to Tumblr with your gift recipient tagged.

Remember that this is an event that prioritises giving rather than receiving. While we will do our best to ensure everyone receives a high-quality gift that meets their standards, there is only so much we can do beyond ensuring that everyone gets a gift.

While we aim to accept as many people who sign up to the event, signing up does not guarantee acceptance into the exchange. If you were found in violation of any of the rules in the 2023 event, have your tumblr dms closed, or are otherwise non-contactable by the assignment period, you will be unable to participate in the exchange.

Please be sure to thank your gifter after you have received your gift.

To ensure you have read and understood the rules, please write the code word aquarius in the notes section of the first page of the sign up form. This lets us know that you have read the rules in their entirety and forms submitted without this will be disregarded.

I’ve been allocated to create a gift for someone I don’t like, can this be changed?

Allaboutnalu aims to be a neutral zone and we encourage you to create a gift for your initially assigned recipient. If for some reason you feel you cannot create a gift to a high-quality standard for your allocated recipient, please reach out and we will try to reallocate you.

I was not given my assignment on the assignment date

While we aim to accept as many sign ups as possible, they do not guarantee participation in the event. Reasons for non-allocation are outlined in the rules. These are in place to ensure that administrative issues from the 2023 event are not repeated. If you think we have made a mistake then you are more than welcome to reach out via dms and we will see what we can do.

Is dark/violent content allowed?

Yes, but within reason. If your recipient has specified that they do not want to receive this type of content, please be mindful of that. Please also be mindful of tagging any potentially triggering content in your gifts.

What do I do if I need to contact my gift recipient before the gift reveal dates?

Please reach out to allaboutnalu through dms so we can contact your recipient on your behalf. Please do not contact your recipient via anonymous asks.

Can I give more than one gift?

One gift is the minimum. If you want to make more than one you are more than welcome. If you enjoy making gifts, we recommend you sign up as a pinch hitter.

The McSpirk Events Gift Exchange is now live!

This exchange will be a bit different from others!

In fact this gift exchange is about Response and Remix works.

What is a response?

Response works that are a fanwork created that were inspired by someone else's creation. (Kind of like how big bangs have art inspired by the fic, and reverse big bangs have fics inspired by art made).

What's a remix?

Remixes which are re-envisoned versions of someone else's fanwork. (As an example maybe you wrote/drew an alternate ending to an episode. Well as a gift to you someone would read that fic and then write, draw, or edit their own ending to that episode.)

Does it have to be Mcspirk?

Nope! While this is a Mcspirk blog, I wanted to host an event that would help everyone in the fandom celebrate each other's amazing talents and skills! So you can request, and share works for any star trek ship, or even non-ship material.

What are the rules?

Your gift has to meet these minimum requirements:

500 words for fics.

10 songs for playlists

30 seconds for a video edit

A sketch for fanart

A graphic edit

A GIF

2. If you are under 18 do not request an NSFW gift, and do not link any NSFW content you may have made.

3. Do NOT reveal who your making a gift. This is a surprise until reveals happen on August 22nd.

4. Turn in your gift by August 10th!

Are Treats allowed?

Of course! If you want treats please include in your request description that treats are okay.

For those who are unaware, treats are bonus gifts. You are not required to make any treats but you can if you want too.

So how does this work? (Step by step instructions with images to help are below the cut.)

Step 1 - Go to the event page on Ao3 here. (The collection was mistitled. I changed it to Mcspirk Gift Exchange 2024.)

Step 2 - Click Sign Up

Step 3 - You begin filling in your request. Please fill in the follow categories to best summarize the fanwork you want a gift made of. You can make up to 10 requests.

For fandom you'll want to put whatever fandom your piece is of. You'll do the same for characters and relationships.

For additional tags please put what types of gifts you'd like to receive as well as if you want a Response gift, a Remix gift, or you can select both to receive either or.

Please put the ratings that match your original source material and any warnings that apply.

Below is an example of one of my pieces, and how I would link it in the description of a request.

Step 4 - Fill in an offer! Please be sure to list all the ships & characters you'd be willing to make gifts for PLUS what kind of gifts you want to make.

This process works exactly like the requests side of things only instead you'll be putting in all the ships/shows/ratings you'd be willing to create for + what you'll make!

Instead of the description box being used for links to works, you can instead use it for extra information. (Stuff that myself as a mod will consider in case I have to switch any matches around.)

T&N is a canon divergence fest for the All For The Game fandom, accepting fic, art (any medium!) and podfic.

Our 2024 theme is Then & Never: Canon Divergence, which means all your creations must exist within the canon universe, but you can go off-course when it comes to the narrative.

The concept of Canon Divergence and Alternative Universe coexist in a lot of situations. Fanlore’s definition of Canon Divergence refers to it as “a term used in some fandoms for fanfiction set in a universe that diverges relatively narrowly from canon, with a point of departure in a character's backstory or during canon.”

Keeping the integrity of the universe is essential to keep it CD instead of a full AU, which means the majority of canon and the universe as we know it has to remain the same. Essentially: change one thing but leave the rest untouched. For example: the tag No Exy is an Alternative Universe because Exy is vital to the canon universe and for the canon narrative to develop, but Mary Hatford Lives would be Canon Divergence. Other examples could include ideas such as: Andrew and Aaron don’t renew their deal for college, Erik moves back to the US with Nicky, Neil grows up in the Nest, Kevin brings Jean along when he escapes.

Everyone Lives and Different First Meeting are common subtropes of Canon Divergence. This idea usually answers “what if” questions about the original narrative, like “what if X never died,” “what if X and Y met earlier,” “what if a villain was a good guy all along,” “what if Z happened earlier in the narrative,” etc. We’re looking for slight changes to canon rather than a complete overhaul of the universe as we know it.

The fest’s only real requirement is that your creations focus on canon divergence. It’s entirely up to you what pairing or pairings (or none at all — your creations don’t have to feature romantic/sexual pairings) you want to feature, what length/medium and what rating you want to go for. We trust you to tell whatever story you want to tell and make the right choices for it. As long as it’s canon divergence, the world is your oyster. Have fun!

TIMELINE

The prompting period will be from September 8th to September 14th.

The sign up period will be from September 15th until the 21st and you’ll be able to either claim a prompt from the list or sign-up with your own idea.

Artists, writers and podficcers will then have until the deadline on October 19th to finish and post their creations.

Posting will start on October 27th and we will stagger the posting of your creations so that everyone has time to read, enjoy, and hype up every creation.

Reveals will happen on the 15th of November.

Let’s go through what every step entails:

PROMPTING

Prompting will open on September 8th, and will end on September 14th. Anyone can prompt and you can prompt as many ideas as you’d like using our form.

Once you open the form, you’ll be asked for the following info:

- pairing (if applicable)

- your prompt (this can be as detailed or as vague as you want it to be)

- if your prompt is nsfw (so that creators browsing the prompts can filter those out if they want)

- your ao3 username (optional)

This fest isn’t an exchange so all prompts are there for inspiration in the first place. Creators do not have to include every single detail of a prompt if they pick it, but do have to use the main idea as a starting point for their works. If you leave your ao3 username when prompting, the creators can choose to gift the fic to you, though this isn’t at all a requirement.

Note that if you’re wanting to write your own idea, you don’t have to prompt it and then claim it later. There will be an option for self-prompting once sign-ups open!

SIGN-UPS/CLAIMING

The prompt list with all the available prompts will be live from the moment prompting opens. Prompts might take a few hours to pop up after being added via the prompting form but you’ll be able to check the list every day during the prompting period, so you can start gathering potential picks to claim.

Sign-ups will open on September 15th. Please note that while claiming was open until the deadline last year, you only have until the 21st to sign up this time around.

The sign-up form will ask you for your name, ao3 username and an email we can use to contact you. Email will be the main form of contact between the mods and the creators so please keep this in mind when signing up.

You’ll be asked to specify if you’re creating art or fic, and if you’re claiming a prompt or self-prompting.

You can then pick a prompt from the list to claim it if that’s what you’re doing, or leave a short description of your idea if you’re self-prompting.

For the sake of the form, podfics count as art. If you’re podficcing, please leave the link to the original fic in the prompt box.

There will also be a box for any questions/comments.

The prompts left during the prompting period will only be available for claiming once for art and once for fic.

The option to sign-up as a team (either co-writers, co-artists or a writer+artist team) will be available. Co-writers will be asked to sign-up only once, and leave the information that you’re co-writing in the questions/comments/concerns box. Writer and artist teams will be asked to each sign-up individually, but let us know that you are collaborating in the questions/comments box, too.

Creators will be limited to one prompt.

CREATING

Submissions must be completely new and finished works. Unfortunately, this means no sequels for previous fics or comics you may have, and no finishing WIPs you’ve already started posting.

Even though this is an anonymous fest, we understand the rampant issue that is reposting and art stealing, so all artists are allowed to submit watermarked/signed works. You will also be given the option to take part in the fest and post your work to the collection, but for it to be posted after reveals, so it’s never anonymous.

There is no minimum word count for fics. We trust that you know the best way to tell your story, and only ask that your works are tagged appropriately and follow the prompt (if applicable) and theme.

Having your fics beta-read isn’t a requirement, but if you’d like yours beta-read and don’t know how to reach out to a beta reader feel free to ask the modding team and we can get you in touch with someone!

Podficcers are welcome to choose any fic previously posted on Ao3 that fits the Then & Never theme to read/record, as long as the original poster allows for podfics of their work to be made.

As you know, the fest will be posting anonymously so we ask you to be creative when sharing wip snippets. We trust you to know what would easily identify your fic once it posts and what is vague enough to slip through the cracks ;)

We will NOT be accepting AI-generated art or fic.

DEADLINE; CHECK-INS, EXTENSIONS AND POSTING

We will be emailing every participant during the creation period, but your final deadline for posting is October 19th. You can submit your work as soon as you have it done, though.

You’ll get detailed instructions for posting to the collection via email, and we’ll post those on both tumblr and twitter closer to the posting date. Following these instructions is crucial so that your work ends up in the collection and remains hidden until we post it and anonymous until reveals.

We’ll be sending every participant a check-in email during the creation period, but we promise that isn’t as scary as it sounds! We won’t be asking you to show us what you’re working on, or how much you have already. We just want to make sure you’re having a good time :)

If you need to drop out, please don’t hesitate and do not feel guilty. Shit happens, we get it. We only ask that you do it as early as possible, so we can adjust the posting schedule accordingly. If you need a few days past the deadline to finish, we should be able to give some people extensions too, just keep us in the loop.

There’s a lot of behind the scenes invisible work put into this by your modding team so we’d rather be told “hey, I’m really sorry but I’m not going to meet the deadline” than being ghosted. We’re all adults here, let’s respect each other’s time and efforts.

It is our priority above all that everyone enjoys taking part, so we’re here to minimise stress and worries.

When posting, don’t forget to add AFTG Then & Never 2024 as one of your tags and post your work to the collection — this will make sure it remains anonymous and hidden until we release it out into the world. Please don’t leave any references that reveal who you are before the anon period is over. You can add all your usual social media links and other potentially-revealing info when reveals happen.

You can find the collection here, and you’ll be able to find it when posting if you type AFTG_thenandnever on the “Post to Collections / Challenges” section.

There will also be a form to fill in with your name, the title of the work you submitted and the link to the work, that you can fill once you’ve posted. The link to this will be shared with you in the posting instructions email :)

(A little note: after you hit 'post' the work will be hidden in the collection until we reveal it, so the easiest way to get to it should you want to edit or just to copy the link is to go through your stats page.)

But don’t worry, we will be reinforcing all of this as we go along!! This is just so you have all the information in one place!

Once your work is posted by us, remember to change the date to the day it’s posted so it appears on top of the list for your pairing/the fandom, instead of the date you submitted it into the collection.

The whole point of this is for it to be a fun and enjoyable experience both for the participants and the readers so we’ll be running lots of activities and hyping up every work as we go along! Please keep an eye on our twitter and tumblr and join in :)

Nagamas Is Gone; Long Live Nagamas

tl;dr Nagamas is getting an overhaul; the exchange is moving to AO3; there's a feedback form if you want to share your thoughts!

After running the Nagamas exchange for the past decade (!!!), with hundreds and hundreds of fanworks produced during those years, the original mod team is stepping down to move on to other ventures. We'd like to thank them for their hard work during that time! So many excellent fanworks and friendships were made possible because of you.

A new mod team will be taking the reins from here forward, and we'll be making some changes to the exchange, in order to make it easier and more sustainable to run and, hopefully, more enjoyable for the participants as well.

Below the cut: what's changing, what's staying the same, and what we'd like your feedback on.

WHAT'S CHANGING:

Nagamas 2024-2025 will be run on Archive of Our Own.

This means fic and art produced for the exchange must be posted to AO3, and you will need an AO3 account to participate.

Nagamas will endeavor to get AO3 invite codes to everyone who needs one; however, if you do not have an AO3 account and think you may like to participate come wintertime, now's a great time to sign up for the AO3 waitlist.

We’ll still be reblogging/retweeting/etc gifts that are additionally posted to social media, but AO3 will be the *primary* location for all gifts.

We will no longer do all matches by hand.

While striving to find the perfect match for every participant, based on their myriad likes and dislikes, was a fun challenge for the mod team, with often-excellent results, it's also proved time-consuming and error-prone as the exchange has grown over time (more than 150 participants last year!).

Instead, we'll be using AO3's matching tool to assign matches. (You will, of course, still be guaranteed to receive a gift that features at least one of your chosen characters/pairings, and any Do Not Wants you describe in your sign-up will be honored.)

In addition to this new system being easier for the mods, this means participants will receive assignments very soon after signups end, instead of needing to wait for a lengthy matching process.

Gifts will be revealed simultaneously.

Previously, we've allowed participants to post their gift to the platform of their choice as soon as their gift is complete. However, this leads to confusion over "wait, where is my gift?", and disappointment when some gifts arrive much sooner than others.

Instead, this year, the AO3 collection will be hidden until every participant has a gift.

Pinch hits will be posted publicly.

In previous years, if creators dropped out of the exchange, the Nagamas mods would attempt to "rematch" by individually contacting a pinch hitter with interest in that particular prompt, in an effort to maintain secrecy as to which gifts were pinch hits and which were not. However, this did take extra time and cause delays.

So, starting this year, if a creator drops out of the exchange, their assigned prompt will be posted publicly, and anyone can then volunteer themselves to fill the prompt.

WHAT'S STAYING THE SAME:

We will still be a pan-Fire Emblem exchange.

You'll be able to request characters and ships from across the whole series.

We will still include both art and fic.

AO3 supports both; fanartists, we haven't forgotten about you!

WHAT WE'D LIKE YOUR FEEDBACK ON:

We're still deciding what other changes may be necessary to keep running the exchange sustainably. (Some things we're considering: we may require that participants' prompts include at least two different Fire Emblem games; we may not be able to honor "don't match me with this person"-type requests.)

If you have any feedback you think the new mod team should take into account when redesigning the exchange, please feel free to submit a quick note via this Google Form.

The form is completely anonymous, and we won’t post any of the feedback publicly, but we do promise to read and take into consideration each comment we receive.

The Handy Dandy Posting Guide

Posting Guide

As hard as it is to believe, we are here: the opening of the Jaime x Brienne 2024 Fic Exchange collection! I know, I know, it feels like prompts went out yesterday. But it's okay if you aren't quite done yet--the posting window is two weeks, so there's still time!

However, if you do know you cannot complete a fic please reach out to me as soon as possible so a knight writer can be arranged. Life happens and there’s no shame in needing a little help.

Now with the collection opening soon, here’s some FAQ on posting!

How does posting work?

There are two options: (1) Go to the collection here, and in the top right there will be a ‘Post to Collection’ button (2) Upload your fic to ao3 as usual, and make sure you enter JaimeBrienneFicExchange2024 in the collection field. From here, the process is the same. Fill in the relevant details and ensure you put your recipient’s AO3 name in the ‘Gift this work to’ field. Double check your original prompt to ensure you have the correct name. A few people have different tumblr/AO3 names and we don’t want any fics to go astray. If you’ve already made an AO3 draft before the today, make sure you add it to the collection and put in your recipient’s username in the fields mentioned above, and make sure you change the date when posting (or your fic will be buried). Be aware it can cause some shenanigans where the fic may not appear at the top of the page. After that, it’s as simple as clicking post! Your fic will be submitted to the exchange and automatically be made anonymous.

I can see my name, something went wrong!

Deep breath. As the author, when you open your own fic (posted or in a draft), it will say ‘Anonymous [YourUsername]’, but to other users it will simply say ‘Anonymous’. If that is not how it appears, double check that it is added to the correct collection and reach out if you still have a problem. Author’s names will not be revealed until October 7th, when I click the button to reveal them. Feel free to reply to comments during that week. As long as you are logged into the account that posted the fic, all of your comments will also be anonymised.

What about Lil’ Oathkeepers?

I’m glad you asked, imaginary exchange participant that’s totally not me talking to myself! A Lil’ Oathkeeper is a gift that can be any size and shape. It can be art! A video edit! A moodboard! A fic shorter than 1000 words! Or… a fic longer than a 1000 words, but you probably know that. Anyone (you don’t even have to be signed up to the exchange) can make and gift a Lil’ Oathkeeper. I’ll be releasing the prompt spreadsheet and posting instructions once all gifts are posted.

Can I thank my beta in the notes of my story?

Absolutely you can! The betas of the fandom work HARD, they definitely deserve recognition. Just be mindful of including anything in your notes that might reveal who you are. You could choose to name your beta, or just thank them generally and add their name after authors have been revealed.

What if I don’t receive a story?

Everyone gets a story. Authors have until September 30th to post a complete fic, so chances are they just haven’t posted yet. It also might be because your fic needed a knight writer to write it. If this is the case, know that your knight is probably working very diligently to complete it, but might not be able to complete it within the posting window. If it looks like your fic will be significantly delayed (like until after authors are revealed) we will contact you directly to let you know what’s up.

What’s the etiquette around thanking my author?

It can be hard to know what to say when you get a gift fic. Maybe it takes the prompts somewhere you hadn't imagined, or maybe you love it so much high-pitched pterodactyl noises are all you can manage. Maybe it's both. But it is good manners to leave a kudos and a comment. It doesn't have to be a long comment, and length does not equal love, but your author worked hard and deserves to have that effort recognised. And if you don't quite have time to read your gift right now? Please pop in and say so if you can!

Can I promote my story?

Please don’t do this until authors have been revealed through the collection. Once they have, go wild!

Can I rec my gift story?

Absolutely! Share the love! You can choose to rec it while it’s still anonymous, or wait until the authors are revealed. It’s up to you.
