Being in the field that I am in, I often notice how many children respond to a lot of negativity because this is what they are used to.
Children are often a product of their environment, speak positively, and react positively and children will learn how to self-regulate positively.

Responsibility
Remember when teaching a child to be responsible, follow this up by asking your child how this makes them feel. They will usually tell you that it feels really good. This is a way to explain to your children that this is what positive emotions and feelings feel like. This is an opportunity to explain the difference between negative feelings and positive feelings.

Setting goals with your children is essential to establishing routines that lead into children being able to take ownership of their progress. Set small goals to start off with. When children accomplish the small goals it builds confidence and self esteem and allows children to move into completing bigger goals.

parenting skills
When talking about parenting skills, we as parent tend to think that we have to be perfect and make no mistakes. This is not exactly true because we have to remember that we as humans are not perfect by any means. Therefore teaching our children and youth to be perfect and setting those expectations so high is actually not what parenting is meant for. Parenting is meant to educate our children and youth and to help guide them to be individuals that can make honest and true decisions and to mold their characters and personalities into something that they are appreciative of. Teaching children and youth to be perfect is actually setting them up for complete failure. We all learn from mistakes. Give your children and youth opportunity to make those mistakes and then sit down with them and have that conversation about how these mistake made them feel and what would have been a better choice. Stay tuned for more helpful parenting tips coming soon.

"Good job"
A parenting tip I would like to leave is when you tell a child "good job" the child will learn how to perform for their parents or teachers or those around them. Think about the feeling that comes with saying "Good job?" The feeling that comes with this is one of feeling like a child has to perform for someone in order to be recognized as doing something well. How about replacing "good job" with, "that was very responsible" This gives the child the definition of what responsibility looks like and follows this up with, "How does this make you feel? Does this make you feel happy and excited? Telling your child that this is very responsible teaches the child how to be responsible and what responsibility looks like. Children may not know what responsibility looks like but they do know what "good job" feels like because they want to perform for people instead of doing what is responsible.

Be solution based
As the first day of school is getting close, remember to use this to teach your children how to be responsible and use positive techniques to get them to accomplish the goals set out for them. For example: Getting dressed in the morning may be a hassle, so give them instructions so they feel like they have control. Give them two options of clothing they can choose from that is weather appropriate and school appropriate and let them choose. Remember to look at the solution and not the problem.

Positive Structure for Children
When children have positive sstructure in their life they tend to have a better perspective in life. Give your children positive structure, as they get older they will be hireable and be able to set positive goals for themselves and have the ability to be successful in their lives. Positive goals can start out to be small goals in order for children to see positive achievements within themselves.

We know that children need their good deeds acknowledged, so we have stickers, pompom jars, certificates of recognition, and other tools. Slowly but surely, we need to stretch and phase out external rewards. Children need to find internal motivation to do the right thing. Cindy and Alison discuss stretching and phase out the external as the motivation becomes internalized.
