Wonderful teacher moment:

I got floated into Pre-K (very not my style) and we were on a walk in the park. A few twenty-somethings were skateboarding, doing tricks on some good sidewalk-- one of the guys has a helmet and the other doesn't.

One of the four-year-olds yells "you're not wearing a helmet!" to a guy doing ollies.

The one who had the helmet was resting, and immediately popped it off his head and gave it to the guy skating. Without any hesitation, he put it on and did some tricks for the kids. Shout out to people in public who make our day brighter and want to set a good example for our littles.

Its really facinating the way conservatives make their own Hell when it comes to raising boys (and its not exactly just conservatives but ots about traditional gender norms) like-

No dress-up! That's GIRLY, even playing doctor. Boys don't explore their identity, they don't imagine themselves as something else

No dolls! No plushies! They don't allow their boys to empathize- they give them action figures with the idea they'll imagine violence and fighting, when in reality they'll just play with them the same (roughly) as a doll- sure they'll fight "bad guys" (a vague concept for a small child) but they'll also hang out and do friend stuff together- cus that's what kids know.

They tell these boys that the highest form of fun is violence and wonder why they're getting calls from the school about their son getting into physical fights. And then they'll say it's because of woke.

In preschool the school psychologist lady is working with a group of kids to manage anger. And part of this is teaching them words for their emotions like: "I'm sad, so I feel low now. My engine is low." Or: "My engine is running high right now. I'm feeling high, so I might be angry." And we as teachers all use these words with those kids too, to help with emotional intelligence blah blah blah. Anyway all this to say today at recess I watched a kid wind up to punch another and I said very loudly "(Kid name) are you high right now!?" on my way to intercept and like how insane would that be to overhear as a passerby. A teacher yelling at a kid and asking if they're high.
