I don't see anyone talking about it, but I love how thankful Chadjen's father is to Shin. Like, the man sent his son in such a school because he wanted him to stand up for himself and yet, when this boy protects him, he embraces him with open arms. Chadjen saying his father would never forgive him if Shin went to his place and didn't receive him with a feast, the man paid the school an obscene amount so that Shin wouldn't be expelled. I just really love it.

High School frenemy is my newest obsession. I will add (hopefully) many posts of Saint/Shin as they are my current brain rot.

But to start my HSF posts, I want to applaud the character development of Ken first.

This boy went from horrible bully:

To cute "docile" friend to Chadjen and the others.

The overall redemption story of all the characters were done rather well in my opinion.

I have nothing but love for all of class 2 at the end of the series.

@maybe-boys-do-love @youkilledpetunia You guys should definitely watch HSF till the end! I just finished it yesterday and I kept being amazed with Mark's autistic character and his writing until the last episode. (also yes, Mark's acting was so incredible - made me totally believe such seasoned actor was like a little innocent brother to younger main actor)

Chadjen was very important to the show, even though he was obviously neurodivergent, he was loved by the most and prioritized, all his words and actions were taken seriously but never once I felt like he was shown as weak or hopeless. A LOT of scenes or relationships were handled because of Chadjen and his proactiveness and him saying his opinions, and not to spoil that the show is all about fighting, but even this autistic kid was shown very bravely doing his best to fight and protect his friends - so nothing along the lines of thinking he's not enough.

I don't think you can watch this show and NOT love Chadjen. And not only because of the adorable way Mark's playing him, the friendship or comradery that forms between him and other characters is just very heartwarming and fulfilling. He's got special interests! He's awkward and sometimes off in social situations or not confident but the others will not let him forget how special to them he is, and his personal arc is nice too. HE WAS THE GLUE FOR THE ENTIRE CLASS filled with rivals!

So yes, don't watch High School Frenemy only for insane bromance and great social commentary, but also for nice neurodivergent rep <3

One thing I really like about High School Frenemy - is the natural way it has an autistic character Chadjen. Home School was a similar genre show - about violent school/students and another autistic character, but Chadjen feels differently treated by writers.

There was a small indication that he was bullied in first episode which quickly ended. Instead, for the most show, Chadjen is always seen in his group of friends, he has many lines and helps move the plot a lot. He's the right hand man and a dear friend of one of the main characters, he is adored and listened to by many students (despite all of them being rough hot-tempered teenagers and outcasts).

His autistic traits are never the butt of the joke or made look like they are weird to others. He isn't mocked for his lack of eye contact, awkwardness or constant fidgeting, he is perceptive, he is included in discussions and plays, and show points out him being a great friend.

Idk it's just so refreshing? Especially since GMMTV tends to have very similar heavily autistic characters in the few shows that openly state it for the sake of using neurodivergent character solely as the outcast, or a target of bullies or a quirky character. Meanwhile Chadjen is there as a strong representation (although I cannot judge how good it is) and often a voice of honest straightforward simplified wisdom.

(and almost everyone fights with each other, friends or enemies, but for 90% of the show everyone respects the autistic kid xD)

That is the face of a man who knows that classmate means boyfriend to be.

... Like, seriously, this reconciliation and rebuilding of their friendship/relationship is so much better than the relationship building in so many other shows. Just look at them. It all felt earned and worthwhile and you got to see both how they were and why they were the way they were and the forgiveness and the struggles and how much they care no matter how much they struggle to show it.

(Just look at them! They are basically divorced dads whose daughter just knew they could make up and is so proud of them now. Now they got to be a family again and they can build up to more and we might not see them date in the show but that doesn't mean they won't be thirty, married, with Chingching visiting them to laugh about how she always knew they would be married someday.)
