This whole flashback is pure catharsis for him, not just mourning the death of his former crew, but celebrating their life, which I'm sure is why Oda literally called this chapter Song of Life

i.e., he knew for the longest time that he liked Ran Mouri a lot ever since they were in kindergarten! Kindergarten!

Some stories like to play into the trope of "she fell first for the longest time and she will always love him and he's a boy so he didn't feel anything at all initially, for the longest time" leaving readers (me actually) feeling kinda bad for the girl because awww you fell first and you look kinda silly the author made you look silly with all your feelings while the boy was just oblivious because he's a trope male, and readers (me) just feel like the feelings are unequal even when they finally get together lol

But no, Shinichi is in touch with his emotions. He knew. Knows. Shinran is a couple who equally and more, loves each other a lot.

Even if right now Ran probably thinks she loves him more because he's almost never around. She thinks. (my projection lol)

My interpretation here is Shinichi had to agree to calling her Ran again even tho initially he didn't want to seem close to her in elementary school because they're 'grown up and can't be friends because different genders'; but because he cannot say no to Ran....so she's back to being Ran and not just Mouri ;)))

Anbu & Root

 Analysis

Both of these groups work in the shadows

  (I’m not using the novels)

Anbu

are covert operatives of capable ninja that are dispatched by their village kage. There are apparently no ranks within the Anbu; team leadership and hierarchy seem to be based on merit and experience. The leaders of the teams are called squad leaders, a position held in high regard.(This mostly goes for konoha’s anbu)

Because Anbu are so vital to the village's operations, they cannot be arrested by the police without a warrant. ch222

Root

Root carried out missions that Danzō believed would benefit Konoha. Because of its core views as "the unseen ones who support the great tree of Konoha from the depths of the earth" ch 285

some of these missions were less respectable, such as eliminating individuals that were considered potential threats simply for their hatred for Konoha, despite not actually having done anything against the village. The organisation's top priority was its secrecy, and most of its missions were carried out in the dark of Konoha's authority. Root was officially disbanded after the Uchiha Clan Downfall due to Danzō spearheading the tragedy.ch284

Another specialty of the organisation was slow, long-term brainwashing. In the case of one of their members, Nonō Yakushi, she was brainwashed through a series of pictures starting with photographs of Kabuto one of her former wards at orphanage showing him growing up. Root slowly switched the person in the photographs entirely and then gave Nonō the order to kill the actual Kabuto.Resulting in Nonō not recognising Kabuto in their final moments. ch584

 Kirigakure, there is a subdivision of Anbu known as hunter-nin: hunter-nin track down and kill missing-nin from Kiri, bringing the head as proof and disposing of the rest of the body so as to not leave behind any info for their enemies.

“it seems that byakuya kuchiki died” and we believed it too, for quite a bit! i still have mixed feelings about this shueisha executive meddlers! he had quite a touching death speech, quite an impactful death...but i love him so i’m glad he gets to stick around too. but let’s see if i feel any differently on a full reread.

I love the framing of this panel, with the last remaining members of the Rumbar Pirates bracketed on each side by swords, symbolizing their upcoming demise. It's gorgeous and tragic, with great use of negative space that really helps hammer home Brook's question.

The Rumbar Pirates singing as they die reminds me a lot of the musicians on the Titanic who played until the ship sank to help keep the passengers calm as they loaded the lifeboats.

Heiji and Shinichi being annoyed that Ran and Kazuha hugged the magician when they were scared and he's kinda hot too so

Then Shinichi backtracking after they demonstrated that Ran didn't actually hug him; she hugged Kazuha, which now disgruntled Heiji because now he finds out that Kazuha had hugged the guy but Shinichi's backtracking because Ran didn't lolll look at his face annoyed at Shinichi

Out of all the terrible and sad things that's happened this arc, Brook mentioning that he's left playing the accompaniment hits me the hardest. To play the accompaniment by itself lends a song to a very specific feeling of incompleteness. It's always supposed to be in the background, not noticed compared to the main melodies and harmonies, which represents Brook's crew as much as it does Bink's Sake itself.

Togetherness and camaraderie are integral parts of the series, and it's interesting to see how Oda plays with isolation and loneliness in different ways with different characters. Unlike Chopper or Robin, Brook was never rejected by his peers--they were ripped away from him by circumstances beyond his control. And because of that he's left playing one part of a song that he's used to being performed by an orchestra of his dearest friends. That adds a welcome dimension to a theme we've seen explored throughout the entire series.

Brook is eighty-eight years old; he has an entire lifetime of experience and adventure behind him. Despite that, he doesn't sink into the mires of his past, and instead jumps at the chance at new adventures and new friends, knowing that there's a risk that they, too, might die. That takes a very specific kind of courage that the older I get find myself appreciating more and more.

The present day party with the Straw Hats is taking place within the ruins of Thriller Bark, but I refuse to believe that Moriah owns a baby grand piano exactly like the one that the Rumbar Pirates used. That means someone had to go through the effort of hauling it onto Thriller Bark in the first place, which would be an enormous hassle, but also that Brook is starting his second adventure playing on the same instrument where he ended his first.

Really, you could look at Brook joining the Straw Hats as a sort of rebirth and his time stuck on the Florian Triangle as more of a Limbo state between true life and death.

I feel like it's wholly appropriate that Luffy's in the background of this panel, since he's the one who is giving Brook the opportunity to fulfill this promise.
