FAR CRY 5

WESLEY DANIEL BROOKS Wesley: English origin, meaning “western meadow.” No special purpose on my part. I yoinked it from James Wesley of Daredevil fame because it sounded like it suited him; Google searching the meaning confirmed it. Daniel: Hebrew origin, meaning “God is my judge.” I do not need to explain why I chose this or why I think it’s funny. Brooks: English origin, meaning “residing near a stream or brook.” I simply wanted a water name because he was designed to be a John ship. However, I like to joke that I belatedly realized it was bad commentary on the plot of the game (just drop “rook” in the middle of “BS”).

ANDERSON BROOKS Anderson: English origin, meaning “son of Andrew.” No purpose, derived from the historical figure Anderson Hatfield primarily because I liked the nickname Anse. He was originally an Arthur, which was a reference to The Scarlet Letter. MARIAN BROOKS Marian: French derivation of the Hebrew name Mariam, meaning “bitter” or “of the sea” or “beloved.” Chosen to be evocative of the Virgin Mary. That’s it, that’s the show.

RAFAEL ALEJANDRO ESTRADA DOS SANTOS Rafael: Spanish derivation of the Hebrew name Raphael, meaning “God has healed.” Hilariously, I had not yet decided conclusively that he would be my captain of the New Dawn era when I chose this. I simply wanted a biblical name associated with angels (and I already had a Gabriel). Alejandro: Spanish derivation of the Greek name Alexander, meaning “defender of man.” Again, this needs no introduction. He is my good boy. Estrada: Spanish origin, derived from the Portuguese word meaning “road.” I nearly despaired and cancelled this when I found out it was one of Oscar Isaac’s last names but I liked it too much for FC5—road, path, you get it—so I kept it. dos Santos: Spanish and Portuguese origin, meaning “of the saints.” The purpose is painfully obvious. Unfortunate (both for me and for him).

NOAH BROOKS-SEED Noah: Hebrew origin, meaning “rest.” Shaggy very much disputes this. The under-the-hood reasoning was simply a joke between Stella and I, that Wes offered the name as a nod to his favorite word, “no.” It is also, of course, a reference to the biblical figure who was chosen by God for the perpetuation of life after His great flood. JOLENE BROOKS-SEED Jolene: English origin, derived from the Hebrew name Joseph, meaning “God is merciful” or “God will add.” The “merciful” part is highly debatable, but He sure did add (sorry to Lyra’s womb). Allowing Lyra and John to name her for Joseph is the natural balance to the Noah debacle, and you know how they feel about balance. CYRUS BROOKS-SEED Cyrus: Persian origin, meaning “sun” or “one who bestows care.” This was chosen by Stella as a reference to the biblical king Cyrus, because it evoked themes of rebuilding and restoration. In retrospect, “one who bestows care” is apt because at any given time you can expect him to be keeping his elder siblings out of prison. PHILIPPA BROOKS-SEED Philippa: Greek origin, meaning “lover of horses.” Yes, she was named to honor Shaggy. Yes, it’s hilarious. (And yes, she does love horses.)

Chronicles of Light and Shadow—an updated wip intro!

Basic info

Genre: young adult, fantasy, comics, a dash of romance

Themes: Grief, mental illness, trauma, found family

Content/Trigger warnings (as is currently planned to occur): depression and suicidal thoughts, self-destructive behaviors, abuse (emotional, verbal, physical), homophobia (not a common theme in the story, but occurs frequently enough that it’s worth mentioning)

Summary

Welcome to the Avrinth [Note: Avrinth is a placeholder name] school of Magical Arts, a private school dedicated to teaching the next generation of mages to control and harness their magical abilities and talents during some of the most chaotic years of their lives.

Mary Ross is the youngest of one of the Four Families, the most powerful mage bloodlines still existing. But her older sister, Charlotte is the one who carries the responsibilities of their family’s influence—which is fine with Mary, who prefers the safety of living unnoticed in her family’s shadow.

But when Charlotte unexpectedly passes away, Mary learns the truth about the Four Families—each one carries the power of ancient, terrifying entities in their blood, and now she carries with her the power and consciousness of a deity of light—a power and a burden that she was never meant to even know about.

Eden has no memories before two years ago.

She’d be lying if she said that she wasn’t curious about her missing past, but she’s content to remain oblivious and live her life looking forward—that is, until her memories start returning to her anyway, each one darker than the last. Eden knows she’s forgotten something important, something that she must uncover.

And she has the most terrifying feeling that she won’t like what she finds.

Characters

Mary Ross: youngest daughter of one of the Four Families, but she’s largely left forgotten and unnoticed. Mary prefers being alone, and values intelligence and knowledge over pretty much anything else. Prior to receiving the power of light, she specialized in storm and electric magic.

Charlotte Ross: Mary’s older sister. Charlotte is much more outgoing than her little sister, and is well loved by most people who meet her. Every mage has heard the name Charlotte Ross, though, even if they’ve never met her.

Eden Delaney: a cheerful, childish girl, likely due to the fact that she’s not burdened by memories of her past. Eden is a special case, because her magic is underdeveloped and this makes it difficult to determine her magical specialty. She is, however, assumed to be a fire mage, and is being trained as such.

Grant Bay: The second-born of one of the Four Families. Grant was close friends with Mary when they were growing up, but a couple of years before the story he and his oldest brother, Uriah, left their family to live with Uriah’s partner. No one is quite sure why. Grant is very popular among the students, in large part due to his easygoing attitude and his charming personality. Grant’s specialty is enhancement magic.

Duncan Brooks: Duncan is cold, stubborn, and rude, and has difficulty getting along with people even when he tries—so he doesn’t try. He and Eden have a bit of a rivalry caused mostly by her trying to purposely one-up him out of spite, and him being competitive in return. Duncan’s magical specialty is nature.

Cyrus Brooks: Cyrus is Duncan’s younger brother and one of Eden’s first friend at Avrinth. Cyrus is much more widely liked than Duncan. He’s very laidback, care-free, and agreeable, and you’d be hard-pressed to find someone in the school who didn’t like him. Cyrus’s specialty is illusion magic.

Lexi Moore: Mary’s roommate and a wannabe journalist—but above that, someone who values the truth. Lexi will do anything to uncover secrets and corruption in the world, and that starts with the school. She fully believes there’s something sinister happening here, and she intends to find out what it is. Lexi’s magical specialty is psychic magic.

Dex Ramirez: a local mechanic, Dex has no magic whatsoever. Their only connection to the school are their friends, Lexi and Duncan, and they aren’t eager to change that. Magic seems to unnerve them, although they don’t have anything against mages specifically.

Daria: Eden’s roommate, and a bit of a “mean girl” type character—but only when she’s around her friends. Otherwise, she’s nice (if a bit arrogant)

Lucas Delaney: Eden’s older brother. He’s much more reserved and cold than she is, and he’s protective of Eden, although you wouldn’t guess it from how coldly he treats her.

Uriah Bay: Grant’s older brother. They’re very similar in personality, in the sense that they share traits like their charm and kindness, but Uriah is a little quieter and less idealistic.

Ash: Uriah’s romantic partner. Ash is blunt and sarcastic, the kind of person that most people struggle to get along with, but it seems that under all of that they have a heart of gold.

thank you for the ask!! Also I meant to post this like. A couple of days after u sent it so I’m sorry about that!

11. if they found someone’s wallet on the street full of cash?

Mary decides to get the wallet back to the owner without even looking at it. She has no need for the money—her family is rich, and she receives an allowance of a considerable sum. If this wasn’t the case, though, it’s hard to say whether or not she would take a different course of action.

Eden is seriously tempted, but ultimately her conscience gets the better of her and she also gets the wallet back to the owner.

Grant also does the right thing and takes it to someone who can properly track down the owner, though he does so just out of the kindness of his heart.

Duncan leaves it. It’s none of his business, and if he takes the money he might get himself into trouble and he doesn’t want to deal with that.

Dex also leaves it for a very similar reason to Duncan. They just can’t afford to get into trouble, and a wallet with some money isn’t worth that trouble.

Lexi will take some of the money if it looks like the owner isn’t hurting for cash, then find a way to return it to the owner. If they don’t have much though, she wouldn’t take any and would just find a way to return it to the owner.

Cyrus would take the cash and leave the wallet. Why shouldn’t he? Someone else would if he didn’t.

Also while I’m here, no one asked but here are a few of the memes drawings I made for Chronicles of Light and Shadow while I was gone. Will post the rest if they ever get done which is unlikely but not impossible.

Anyway I think I’m done with the Picrews for now but making those made me realize I never actually talked about the characters’ sexualities so here we go:

Eden: bisexual, but has only been in a relationship with a couple of girls in the past, so tends to lean more toward girls—however, I plan to have her end up with a male character in the end as of right now.

Cyrus: fluctuates between using the label queer and bi. He isn’t sure what he identifies as yet, and so he uses the queer label as an umbrella term, and the bi label to convey that he’s potentially open to dating either for now. I guess the most accurate term for him in actuality is bi-curious?

Lexi: bisexual, with a preference for girls. She does, however, spend nearly the entire series pining for her nonbinary best friend, Dex. I’m comfortable revealing this because like, I do mean the WHOLE series lol

Dex: nonbinary (exclusively they/them pronouns). Dex tends to use the queer or pansexual label, and has no preference for their partner’s gender. Spends most if not all of the series pining for Lexi, though.

Grant: identifies as bi, but tends to be more comfortable with women just due to the normalization. He has at least one ex-boyfriend, though, and likely more than that. He’s planned to end up with a girl in the end, though

Mary and Duncan are both straight, though it’s possible that Duncan is ace—but the characters are minors and the topic of sex is never explicitly mentioned, so the most confirmation this will potentially get if I decide on it is an ace pride flag somewhere in his possession.

Would your character rather have 100 casual friends or one very devoted friend? Why?

Eden would rather have both, if possible. But if she HAD to choose, she’d say a lot of casual friends. The more the merrier, right?

Hm...I think if Mary could choose, she would want to be the kind of person who could have a lot of casual friends, because she’d feel less alone. As it is though, she can only stand to have a few close friends, so she’d have to say one devoted friend.

Duncan would say one devoted friend, because he can’t stand most people anyway. His grumpy attitude aside, he really isn’t good at interacting casually with people he doesn’t know well—small talk bores him, and he’s naturally suspicious of people’s intentions.

Grant would say a lot of casual friends. He likes being around people, and more than that, he likes being liked and feeling wanted.

I think Lexi would choose one close friend, despite being a more outgoing person, because she would want someone she knew she could trust to have her back. Lots of casual friendships are beneficial to her (because she’s a wannabe reporter, and seeks to find the truth in everything, so the more people she could approach the better) but they can’t really be trusted to help her when she needs them.

Dex would say one close friend, but the main reasons are actually a little spoilery? Their secondary reasoning, though, and the one they’ll tell you if you ask, is that they’re just introverted, and too many people is overwhelming for them and makes them cranky.

Cyrus has a lot of casual friends, and his more easygoing personality makes it easy for him to make casual friends, but I think he wouldn’t hesitate to trade that for one devoted friend who he really trusted to be there for him.

8. Your oc is wrongfully (or rightfully) imprisoned. How do they fight the security guys in charge of them? Brute force, constant mockery, crocodile tears, etc?

okay so I’ll just do the main cast for my NaNo wip (that I haven’t been working on much because of art and school 😔)

Mary would try to reason with the guards. Like, “Look at me. Do I look like I could have done what they say I did?” She could make an actually compelling argument tho depending on the situation.

Eden would try brute force using her magic, but it’s uncertain whether she’d be successful. Her magic is strong, but tends to get out of control. It really depends on the guards’ skills and whether or not Eden accidentally hurts herself, too. If her magic is somehow not available to her (which is a likely situation, especially for her lack of control) she’ll still just try to get past quickly using the element of surprise to attack with an object. This is even more likely to fail, but she’s not really great at thinking things through lol

Lexi tries crocodile tears first, and if that fails, between fake sobs she throws in a comment about her parents and/or fiance—all three of whom are very powerful socially and physically. If that doesn’t convince the guards to back off, she runs, because nothing will.

Dex will use brute force. They have no magic, unlike the other characters on this list, but they DO have a few years of combat practice under their belt—though they have a higher chance of success if they can find something to use as a weapon.

Grant COULD talk his way out if needed, but he prefers not to encounter the guards at all. If he can get away with sneaking by without being seen, he will.

Cyrus will TRY to talk his way out, but he’s...very bad at it?? Much worse than he intially expects himself to be. He’s just too awkward, and his anxiety over the situation will make him stumble over his words. In the end his best bet is to run, hide, and sneak past when he’s given an opening.

Duncan also tries to reason with the guards, but he’s far less hesitant than to lie or hurt somebody than Mary is. He’s not socially adept enough to actually manipulate his way out, but he might be able to get away with intimidating the guards or twisting truths.
