i think the problem with most widespread writing advice is that it's meant for writers just starting out and not meant to be applied to All Levels Of Writing.

like "show don't tell" is meant to encourage a new writer to think of different ways to describe something beside The Obvious and push them to observe how different uses of words can affect the reader. it does NOT mean "never outright state what is going on ever."

the common advice to cut out things that aren't essential to the story is to give new writers a better handle on how to PLOT a story-writers generally have to start out telling stories with Very Obvious conflicts and plot beats before they gain enough control of the form to tell more subtle ones. it doesn't mean characters talking to each other casually is evil.

"start in the middle" is a piece of advice meant for beginning writers who often have much bigger story ideas than they can feasibly put to paper. they don't have the writing experience to know which parts of their ideas they can execute well (or at all). starting in the middle then means writing the part with the most conflict and interesting things happening first (which is easier for a beginner) and, most importantly, gets them out of the planning stage and actually writing. it does not mean exposition is evil and your story should always start with something Big and Dramatic.

the thing with writing advice is that it's not one-size-fits-all, and writers should discard any advice that they've outgrown or doesn't serve them any more. the craft of storytelling is about learning how good stories are built and made from the smallest to the largest scale, not following a bunch of arbitrary rules to the letter.

Seething after seeing an author I knew post a Facebook rant about how everyone who says “AI is theft” are hypocritical pearl-clutching idiots who for some reason don’t reserve the same ire for living human authors who, say, take inspiration from mythology.

Ah yes. My studying the events of the French Revolution in order to be able to write my epic fantasy WIP over months is absolutely the same as ChatGPT doing a predictive text equivalent based on someone else’s words.

I could say though, for a fantasy world, there is nothing wrong in creating new animals for your world by just… changing animals from our world around.

Like, I created a type of bird in my story called the piebald swift. Swifts do not come in a piebald pattern, but they can in a fantasy world.

Never feel like you have to reinvent the wheel.

i dont consider myself a 'fashion guru' by any means but one thing i will say is guys you dont need to know the specific brand an item you like is - you need to know what the item is called. very rarely does a brand matter, but knowing that pair of pants is called 'cargo' vs 'boot cut' or the names of dress styles is going to help you find clothes you like WAAAYYYY faster than brand shopping

I’m thinking about maybe doing book reviews, to incentivize me to read more and get through my book collection, to study other writing styles, and to make note of stuff I liked and disliked about various stories so I can better know what I want to do with my own stories. And I also think it’d be fun to just have discussions about various books with people who have different opinions and can enlighten me about stuff they liked and disliked. Something something “every book/movie/game/etc is someone’s favorite and I want to figure out why”

Anyways, in the interest of this, can I get some book suggestions? My own preference is fantasy, but really anything is welcome, I need to broaden my horizons anyway.

If u want to write a story about a character that's just you but hotter with a dark twisted backstory and magical powers and a pet falcon or something, I think u should just go ahead and do that. Who's gonna stop you? The government?? Fuck the police.

corrupted godhood. reluctant false messiah. prophecy as a creeping all consuming malady. does the oracle see the future or make the future? the horror of trapping yourself inescapably on purpose. the chains of destiny dragging you towards the path you are fighting tooth and nail to free yourself from. there never having been a chance to begin with. no other choice to make. but making that choice regardless.
