The Crow's Nest Chan Master of JTTW

I am reading back through Journey to the West (Xiyouji, 西遊記) and was reminded of a strange, seemingly throwaway character who appears at the end of chapter 19, the "Crow's Nest Chan Master" (Wuchao chanshi, 烏巢禪師). He is described as an accomplished cultivator who lives in a juniper tree nest on Pagoda Mountain (Futu shan, 浮屠山), just beyond the border of Tibet (Wusicang, 烏斯藏). Zhu Bajie claims the master once asked him to jointly practice austerities, but the pig-spirit passed on the opportunity. Flash back to the present, and the pilgrims pass into his domain. After a brief chat, the Crow's Nest Chan master orally passes on the Heart Sutra (Xin jing, 心經) to Tripitaka.

There are two things that interest me about the Chan Master. The first is his magical abilities. Sun Wukong is offended by the monk but fails to hit him with his staff:

Enraged, Pilgrim lifted his iron rod and thrust it upward violently, but garlands of blooming lotus flowers were seen together with a thousand-layered shield of auspicious clouds. Though Pilgrim might have the strength to overturn rivers and seas, he could not catch hold of even one strand of the crow's nest (Wu & Yu, 2012, vol. 1, p. 391).

This reminds me of an event from Acts of the Buddha (Sk: Buddhacarita; Ch: Fo suoxing za, 佛所行讚, 2nd-century), an ancient biography of the Buddha:

The host of Mara hastening, as arranged, each one exerting his utmost force, taking each other’s place in turns, threatening every moment to destroy [the Buddha, but] … Their flying spears, lances, and javelins, stuck fast in space, refusing to descend; the angry thunderdrops and mighty hail, with these, were changed into five-colour’d lotus flowers…” (Beal, 1883, pp. 152 and 153).

This points to the Crow's Nest Chan Master having great holy powers.

The second thing that interests me is that he is based on a historical monk, Niaoke Daolin (鳥窠道林, lit: "Bird's Nest" Daolin; 741–824). Here is his full biography from the Records of the Transmission of the Lamp (Jingde chuandenglu, 景德傳燈錄, 1004 to 1007):

Chan master Niaoke Daolin ... was from Fuyang in Hangzhou and his family name was Pan. His mother, whose maiden name was Zhu, once dreamt of the rays of the sun entering her mouth, after which she conceived. When the baby was born a strange fragrance pervaded the room, so the name ‘Fragrant Light’ was given to the boy. He left the home life at the age of nine and received the full precepts at the Guoyuan Temple in Jing (Jingling, Hubei) when he was twenty-one years old. Later he went to the Ximing Monastery in Chang’an to study the Huayan Jing (Avatasaka Sūtra) and the Śāstra on the Arising of Faith (Śraddhotpada Śāstra, Aśvagosa) under the Dharma Teacher Fuli, who also introduced him to the Song of the Real and Unreal, and had him practise meditation. Once Niaoke asked Fuli, ‘Could you say how one meditates and how to exercise the heart?’ Teacher Fuli was silent for a long time, so then the master bowed three times and withdrew. It happened that at this time Tang Emperor Taizong had called the First Teacher in the Empire [Daoqin] of Jing Mountain to the Imperial Palace and Daolin went to pay him a formal visit, obtaining the True Dharma from him. Returning south the master first came to the Yongfu Temple on Mount Gu (Zhejiang), where there was a stūpa dedicated to the Pratyekabuddhas. At this time both monks and laymen were gathering there for a Dharma-talk. The master also entered the hall, carrying his walking stick, which emitted a clicking sound. There was a Dharma-teacher present from a temple called Lingying, whose name was Taoguang, and who asked the master, ‘Why make such a sound in this Dharma-meeting?’ ‘Without making a sound who would know that it was a Dharmameeting?’ replied the master. Later, on Qinwang Mountain, the master saw an old pine tree with lush foliage, its branches shaped like a lid, so he settled himself there, in the tree, which is why the people of that time called him Chan Master Niaoke (Bird’s Nest). Then magpies made their nest by the master’s side and became quite tame through the intimacy with a human – so he was also referred to as the Magpie Nest Monk. One day the master’s attendant Huitong suddenly wished to take his leave. ‘Where are you off to then?’ asked the master. ‘Huitong left the home life for the sake of the Dharma, but the venerable monk has not let fall one word of instruction, so now it’s a question of going here and there to study the Buddha-dharma,’ replied Huitong. ‘If it could be said that there is Buddha-dharma,’ said the master, ‘I also have a little here,’ whereupon he plucked a hair from the robe he was wearing and blew it away. Suddenly Huitong understood the deep meaning. During the Yuan reign period (806-820 CE) Bai Juyi was appointed governor of this commandery and so went to the mountain to pay the master a courtesy call. He asked the master, ‘Is not the Chan Master’s residing here very dangerous?’ ‘Is not your Excellency’s position even more so?’ countered the master. ‘Your humble student’s place is to keep the peace along the waterways and in the mountains. What danger is there in that?’ asked Bai Juyi. ‘When wood and fire meet there is ignition – the nature of thinking is endless,’ replied the master, ‘so how can there not be danger?’ ‘What is the essence of the Buddha-dharma?’ asked Bai. ‘To refrain from all evil and do all that is good,’ answered the master. ‘A three-year-old child already knows these words,’ said Bai. ‘Although a three-year-old can say them, an old man of eighty can’t put them into practice!’ countered the master. Bai then made obeisance. In the fourth year, during the tenth day of the second month of the reign period Changqing (824 CE), the master said to his attendant, ‘Now my time is up.’ And having spoken he sat on his cushion and passed away. He was eighty-four years old and had been a monk for sixty-three years. (Textual note: Some say the master’s name was Yuanxiu, but this is probably his posthumous name.) The Lady Dansk made absolutely no effort to hide what she was, not that he didn’t know the moment he looked into her eyes with their crimson hue. She didn’t insult him by pretending to be anything else and to be honest, he could respect that. She also didn’t act like other strigoi he’s encountered: bloodthirsty and almost beast-like. That alone stayed his blade. Genvieve spoke with a sophisticated air about her, moved with a kind of elegance, and listened intently when he talked. When he brought up his theory of the killer being another strigoi, she had honestly looked surprised, asking intelligent questions as to his reasoning.

“I would have known if another strigoi was in my territory.” She said, scowling slightly. They sat by each other in their own plush chairs in the sitting room, the fire chasing away the chill of the night.

“I have reason to believe that it’s made its lair in the surrounding forest.” He said and she made a thoughtful sound, leaning sideways in her chair with her elbow resting on the arm, fingers at her lips. The firelight danced off her alabaster skin, catching in the teardrop ruby pendant she wore on a delicate chain around her neck.

“You mean to search for it?”

“Yes.”

“Tell me what you require and you shall have it.”

“A meeting with the Guard Captain, the town guard will need to be made aware of what to look for.”

“Done, he’ll be summoned in the morning.”

“But you already knew this.” Geralt said and she gave him a soft smile.

“I suspected, but it’s nice to have it confirmed.” She said, “Anything else?”

“The truth.”

“Have I not been honest with you thus far?” She asked, looking a little confused at the request.

“Are you the one killing these people?” To her credit, she didn’t get angry or look offended at the question, regarding him evenly.

“No.” She said simply after a moment’s pause.

“Would you tell me if you were?” He asked.

“Sir Geralt, I have no need to kill, to take forcibly what is freely given.” She said, “I have watched over Fallhaven since before its wisest elder’s great-grandfather was a gleam in his sire’s eye. This town is my home and these people are my family. Whatever is killing them, either another one of my kind or something else, I bid you find it and slay it.”

“A pretty speech.” Geralt said.

“The truth, as you requested it.”

“You say it’s freely given.”

“I have donors,” Genvieve explained, “Those who serve me, who know me for what I am and what I require.”

“Evan.” He guessed and she gave a gentle nod.

“He is one of them, yes.”

“One of?”

“I have multiple.” She confirmed, “To take too much or too often from one risks death or enslavement.”

“And they agree to this?” Geralt asked with a slight scowl and her lips turned in a small, fond smile.

“Wholeheartedly.”

“Why?”

“You would really have to ask them.” She stood then, brushing her hands over her skirts to flatten them. “Shall I show you to your room?” He stared at her for a moment, debating on whether or not he wanted to stay in the same place as an open strigoi, but ultimately shrugged, getting up from his seat. She hadn’t given him any reason to think she was going to attack him and he knew better than most not to judge people just based on who they were.

“After you.” He said and she gave him a soft smile, leading the way out of the sitting room. They were silent as they walked through the manor, heading up the sweeping staircase and down a hall, sconces on the walls lighting their way with gentle glows. They stopped in front of a door and she gave him another small smile as she pushed it open.

“Here you are,” She said, “Your things have already been brought up and your horse has been housed comfortably in the stables. Is there anything else you need?” He thought for a moment, considering requesting a bath but decided against it for the time being.

“No.” He said and she nodded.

“Have a nice night, Sir Geralt.”

“Just “Geralt” is fine.” He said and there was another soft smile.

“Geralt, then.” She said, “Goodnight.”

“Goodnight.” He echoed, walking into the room as she moved away, closing the door behind him.

Where is Allāh?

Allāh is Above His Throne — Allāh is Not Everywhere

is MAJOR SHIRK which NEGATES the TAWHEED of ALLĀH in His names and attributes.❞

EVIDENCES FROM THE QURAN :

❝Indeed, your Lord is Allāh, who created the heavens and the earth in six days and then...

(Open your Quran, Surah Yunus (ch. 10), ayaah 3. It says : )

...استوى على العري، ...

...ESTABLISHED HIMSELF ABOVE HIS THRONE, arranging the matter [of His creation]. There is no intercessor except after His permission. That is Allāh, your Lord, so worship Him. Then will you not remember?❞

In both verses Allāh talk about the knowledge of Allāh and the Sight of Allāh meaning HE is ABOVE His Throne ; but through His KNOWLEDGE and SIGHT... He is with us.

❝Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said,

"When Allāh completed the creation, He wrote in His Book which is with Him ON HIS THRONE, 'My Mercy overpowers My Anger.'"❞

❝Narrated Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه :

Allāh's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم used to say at the time of difficulty,

"None has the right to he worshipped but Allāh, The Majestic, the Most Forbearing. None has the right to be worshipped but Allāh, the right to be worshipped but Allāh, The Lord of The Heavens and THE LORD of The Honourable THRONE.❞

[Shahih Bukhari no. 7431]

❝...when the Prophet ﷺ asked a slave girl, “Where is Allāh?”

She replied, “IN THE HEAVEN.”

He ﷺ then asked her, “Who am I?”

She said, “You are the Messenger of Allāh.”

He ﷺ said (to her master), “Release her, for she is a believer."❞

❝Sheikh-ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said that this DOES NOT mean in any way that Allāh is in the midst of, or surrounded by the heavens, as none of the righteous predecessors of this Ummah (community) or its Imams ever stated that ; rather they AGREED that Allāh is established on His Throne above the heavens and is distinguished from His creation with no similarity whatsoever between Him and His creation in terms of His Attributes, Names, or Power.❞

❝I heard Al-Awzā'ī saying :

“The Tā’bi’īn were widespread whilst we used to say that ALLĀH IS ABOVE HIS THRONE and we believe in the Attributes of (Allāh) transmitted in the Sunnah.” ❞

Notes: Tickletober Day One: Feathers

“That ones a red-winged blackbird, they’re pretty common in Maine,” Stan explained, pointing out a bird that had just recently perched in a tree. The bird was completely black, save for its wings, which both had a speck of yellow and orange on them, almost like a sunset. It was one of Stan’s favourites despite its commonality, and there was an entire page in his birdwatching scrapbook dedicated to it.

“It’s really p-pretty,” Bill exclaimed once he finally caught sight of what Stan had been pointing at.

“Not as pretty as you though,” Stan whispered, a little louder than Bill would’ve liked. It only took seconds for Bill to blush up to his ears, ducking his face down between his knees. Stan could tell that his boyfriend was blushing without even having to look, lazily reaching his hand behind him to hold Bill’s, his eyes still facing forward and glued to his binoculars. “Don’t get shy now.”

The Losers had decided that they wanted to try each of their weird hobbies at least once, and today it was birdwatching with Stan. Bev, Bill and Mike couldn’t make it, but the other four decided to go anyways.

Richie made a retching sound, alarming Stan enough to turn around and face the boy. As it turns out, Richie was just overexaggerating, feigning disgust to Stan and Bill’s act of public affection. In the process, Richie had managed to scare away any birds in a 2 kilometre radius.

“Richie d-don’t act as if you a-and Ed-Eddie are any different,” Bill spoke, looking between both of them and laughing as they avoided eye contact. Stan had a much different bone to pick.

“Richie! You scared away the birds!” Stan lunged at Richie, and Bill and Eddie watched in curiosity as the two wrestled on the ground.

Bill contemplated stepping in until he heard a sweet, familiar sound, one that is more beautiful and more glorious than any bird call could ever be.

“Ch-cheheheater!” Eddie and Bill were suddenly able to differentiate the two bodies wrestling on the floor as the rolling ceased.

Both boys were still lying on the ground next to each other, but Stan had his arms firmly attached to his sides, Richie’s finger stuck under them.

“Sh-shit Richie stop, don’t!” Stan screamed frantically, squirming back and forth. Richie brought his fingers out, attempting to get a better grip on stan. What he got instead, was Stan attempting to crawl away on all fours while giggling. He quickly pulled Stan by his ankle, holding it so he would be unable to fly away. At that point, if almost on cue, a feather floated down from the sky, landing on Bill’s head.

“My dear Billiam, would you mind passing me that feather?’ Richie put on his fake british accent. Stan’s eyes went wide, and he started rapidly kicking out in an attempt to flee.

“I wasn’t going to do this Staniel, but you decided that you were going to try and run away, so now it would only make sense for me to get your feet.”

Stan let out a string of protests and curse words as he felt Richie peel off his shoe and his sock, trying desperately to get out of his friend’s grasp. After what felt like hours of anticipation, he felt the softness of the feather dragged from his heel all the way up to his toes.

Stan bit his lip and clamped his eyes shut, praying that Richie would just give up, but soon enough he was snorting and giggling uncontrollably.

“Nohoho! Stop! Please Richie!” Stan squealed as Richie tickled his most ticklish spot ruthlessly, dragging the feather in between his toes and adding his fingers to the mix. Richie brings his fingers up and wiggles them underneath Stan’s toes, and the younger boy begins to snort, continuing his frantic laughter.

“Hohoholy shihihit! Rihihichie thahahat’s sohohoho bahahad,” Stan was trying desperately to get away and curl his toes to avoid Richie’s knowing fingers. Bill just looked on in admiration, but Eddie knew that sometimes his boyfriend could take things a little far.

Eddie knelt down next to the two of them and started to poke Richie in the side wherever he could reach, until Richie had fallen to the grass and released Stan.

“Y-yohou suhuck Rich,” Stan giggled, slinking over to Bill and cuddling into his side in the grass.

“Of course I suck Stan, just ask your mom.”

St Basil the Confessor bishop of Parium

Saint Basil the Confessor, Bishop of Parium, lived during the eighth century. He was elected as bishop by the inhabitants of Parium, who venerated the saint as a true pastor of the flock of Christ.

When the Iconoclast heresy broke out, Saint Basil resolutely came out on the side of icon veneration and refused to sign the orders for their abolition (the “Iniquitous Scroll” of the Council of 754 which was convened under the emperor Constantine V Copronymos (741-775). The saint avoided any contact with the heretics and did not permit them into his diocese. For his zeal he suffered much persecution, hunger and deprivation.

Saint Basil remained faithful to the Orthodox Church until his death.
