Episode 6 thoughts babey,,,,
Here are my thoughts on: episodes 1-3; episode 4 and episode 5!
Things I like:
Okay I see we’re starting off with emotional devastation write off the bat with a Zuko flashback. Dallas does a good job at portraying now-Zuko and before-Zuko. HES JUST TRYING HIS BEST HE JUST WANTS TO MAKE HIS FATHER PROUD OF HIM!! HE WANTS TO HELP OTHERS AND HES PUNISHED FOR IT!! 😭😭😭
Finally!!!! we are getting more Zuko and Zhao conflict. We needed to see more of Zhao as a villain
June flirting with Iroh is so funny and far better than in the og
anyone: this place is impenetrable. zuko: say no more 😉
oh my god they did the zuko sequence of him taking out those guards to get to Aang so well!
Love the whole zuko rescuing Aang from Zhao it was perfect ✨
Zuko meticulously finding out all the information he can about the past Avatars to the point where Aang says no one else knows this stuff is so important to me
Also I like how Aang and Zuko got a longer conversation than in canon. they had a nice moment there 😌 that will get Zuko Contemplating Treason for sure. Well actually - more treason than what he’s already done (thinking about you: siege of the north)
the 41st division being Zuko’s crew is an interesting choice!!! I’m actually sobbing about it!! To me it’s both a bad and good choice. I’ve explained my thoughts below and in the next section
Despite what I say below, Zuko’s crew bowing to him after they find out Zuko’s actions saved their life is such a good scene. Zuko seeing the product of having compassion and empathy for others as something positive, rather than something he’s ultimately punished for.
things I don’t like:
Zhao’s speech kinda sucked tbh. in the og it was much more grand and terrifying. He's on ground level with the soldiers instead of on that grand balcony. In the original he goats how fire is the superior element, how they're going to raze the Earth Kingdom to the ground. But in this one, it's just not the same level of brainwash-y propaganda-ryness that would have made SO much more chilling
idk but i preferred when Koh was a bit more mysterious and we didn’t really know much about him except that he stole the face of Avatar Kuruk’s lover and like some more vague info that leaves you intrigued about the mystery. like who the fuck is the mother of faces (i know she’s from the comics but still). And why did Roku steal it from him at all? idk im confused
Idk why they made Zuko stand and fight Ozai????? Ozai burning his own child who refused to fight him was a part of the horror of it all. Zuko refused to fight his father and begged for his forgiveness but Ozai still burned him anyway. I guess it still gets the cruelty across and that Zuko’s own compassion is used against him and Ozai is an irredeemable monster, but i still think it’s Not A Good Change.
Like I said above, Zuko’s crew being the 41st is not a bad thing! But I do just want to say that in the original, the attack goes ahead, and presumably, those soldiers die. It’s horrible. Zuko’s sacrifice is in vein and it was always going to be in vain because the Fire Nation as its stands would not allow it. Ozai would not allow it. I think that, like I said, it’s not necessarily a bad choice, but I think it does take away some of the horror of Zuko’s story (same as it does with making Zuko fight back in my opinion). HOWEVER, I do think it’s not all bad. I loved the scene where the crew bows to him - like I said above 🥹
Aang just giving Koh the statue and then all the people are just freed and he doesn’t even say anything wtf 💀
also i was so excited for roku’s appearance but i just thought it was disappointing. stop info dumping!!!! leave something up for interpretation I am BEGGING. “And she is Koh’s mother. Koh longs for the same thing we all do. Family.” maybe i’m being a bitch about this but it just annoys me!!!!!!! stop spelling things out! Koh is so much better when he’s mysterious and unknowable!! why is Roku's whole presence to be here and info-dump about Koh instead of all the meaningful and wise interactions he has with Aang in the original. simply ✨no✨
As you’ve seen from my previous entries, I try to have more positives than negatives but there were some things in this episode that irritated me and that i couldn’t ignore lol hopefully it gets better.... 😅
There were still parts i loved! Aang and Zuko's interactions were great and teh whole sequence of them escaping was wonderful. I likes Zuko interacting with the crew and Iroh trying to care for Zuko but not really knowing how to reach out to him.
On to the next one!

Aeon Flux | Ch. 1
Various x Aeon ! Reader
Summary | As an aeon in a human disguise, you traverse the cosmos because... you're bored. Immortal life, unchanging circumstances, the weak begging for power, the powerless asking for a second chance. It all got so boring for you. So, you decided to see why these humans continue to groan about the atrocities of everyday life. Thing is? It's turning out easier than you thought!!

“So let me get this straight,” Himeko began as she watched lay back into the couch, soda in hand with a bag of chips laying in your lap, “you went to Herta’s space station, met Stelle, played Go Fish with Stelle and Dan Heng before the Legion arrived, stood up and said ‘my job here is done,’ and then left?”
You grinned, “yep, and March 7th oh so loudly declared, ‘you didn’t even do anything!!’ it was quite hilarious,” you said as you took another swig of your soda, “besides, I’m not worried. Those three will be just fine.”
Welt was the next one to come up to you, “how are you sure?”
Glancing at the man, you gave him a thumbs up, “I’m not! Just a gut feeling is all, I mean, I’m not like the people on the Luofu who have the divine foresight and crap like that,” you took another sip of your soda, “but anyway, those guys should be here any moment… which reminds me, you all for real letting a stellaron aboard this train?”
“You’re on here, aren’t you?”
You winked at Himeko, “touché.”
“There you are!”
You looked over at the doors as they opened up, March coming barreling through a moment later, “yo!”
March shoved her pointer finger into your chest, “don’t you ‘yo’ me! You left us there.”
You pouted and raised your hands in mock surrender, “but I had to, I was going to miss the season finale of my favorite anime, and you know I hate watching reruns. Besides, I couldn’t let Pompom spoil it again for me…”
“You’re unbelievable!”
March says this with an exasperated expression while throwing her hands up in the air as she walked away. Waving goodbye to March as she was probably going to her room, you then brought your attention to Dan Heng, “well?”
“It was alright, we didn’t need you there.”
“See! I knew you three will be alright,” You stood up from the couch, your bag of chips and soda being placed onto the table as you walked up to Dan Heng and the new trailblazer.
“The name is y/n, and that was a fun game of Gold Fish! Let’s play again sometime, ok?”
“It’s Go Fish,” Dan Heng lightly reminded again as Stelle took your hand and gave it a good shake.
“You sure,” you asked.
“Positive.”
“But Gold Fish sounds so much better,” you say as you let go of Stelle’s hand and shift your focus to Dan Heng.
“It only sounds good and correct because that is what you got used to saying. It’s kind of like Roku and Ruko. You know that device you hook up to your tv for streaming different apps.”
“Ahhh, that makes sense.”
Dan Heng knew you were just playing around, but he found that he quite liked and even looked forward to these interactions with you, but he knew that it won’t last forever. He remembers when you first joined the Astral Express and how you said you won’t be staying long.
He’s not entirely sure when you plan on leaving, but he hopes it won’t be soon.
You felt a tap on your shoulder and looked to see Stelle, “what’s up?”
Stelle held up the playing cards from before and you grinned, “oh? Wanna get beat again?”
“I’m pretty sure you left when I started winning.”
You rolled your eyes, “whatever Dan Heng, let’s just play.”
You grabbed Dan Heng’s and Stelle’s hands and moved your way to the couch. Pompom, Himeko, and Welt all the while could only shake their heads at the scene.
“Well, while those three play around, it’s time to go to our next destination!”
You perked up at that from the spot on the couch, “aww… already? I didn’t get the chance to get souvenirs yet…”
Pompom ignored you “time to get this train moving!”
Before you could cry a river at being ignored, Dan Heng held out a small phone charm for you, “here.”
You grinned at the small piece of jewelry before nudging Dan Heng’s shoulder, “aww, it’s a spear and it looks like yours too! How thoughtful!”
“It may not be the souvenir that you were hoping for, but I’m glad you liked it.”
You nodded enthusiastically and quickly pulled out your phone to hook the charm on, and as you did so, the Express was beginning to warp so you looked to Stelle, “hold on tight, it’s going to get a bit…bumpy.”
When you looked away to shuffle the cards in your hands, you didn’t notice how both Dan Heng and Stelle grabbed onto your sleeve. They couldn’t quite explain the reason of why they did it, but they just felt like if something went wrong, you would be able to save them just fine (even if you didn’t do anything on the space station or did anything ever as March liked to put it).
And they would be right on that feeling. You may have been the type to sit back and let them handle their own problems. But if the Epxress blew up or was going to crash, well, maybe it would of been alright for an aeon like yourself to save them.
Granted, you hoped something like that doesn't have to happen because you quite liked having them not know you're an aeon. Heh.

Akechi Touma (Previously: Asumi Touma)
Height: You want to know my height? To be perfectly honest, I'm not very tall, but I believe the last time I measured I was 15-... Oh, but this was two months ago so it may have changed since then... and although I say changed, I certainly don't mean to imply that my height may have decreased. Generally speaking, people tend not grow shorter. Also I do believe I'm still in my growth period, so I can say with confidence that I've almost certainly grown during these past two months. By the way, do you know about growing pains? Lately my joints have quite sore. If I compare my recent pains to the pain I felt prior to these last two months, then by my estimate I should currently be about 15-... Oh, did you also know that when measuring your height, it can vary by up to 2 centimeters between morning and night? When you sleep, the pressure placed upon your vertebrae is less, so you're at your tallest right when you wake up. Then you gradually shrink throughout the day. I believe when I measured myself two months ago it was about 11:40, so if I had measured myself right after waking up then I believe I would be one, or possibly even two centimeters taller. Knowing this, do you still want to know my height? The number is completely arbitrary, so there really would be no point in knowing, yes? I can't say I'm all that fond of pointless endeavors. Besides...
(Ok sounds like someone doesn't wanna reveal how short he is... Anyway I looked up some stuff about growth in teenage boys and I didn't go past the first page of google cuz I'm lazy but teenagers typically grow 1.25 cm (0.49 in) to 5 cm (1.97 in) in a month during a growth spurt. This gives a range of about 2.5 cm (0.98 in) to 10 cm (3.94 in) that he's grown throughout the 2 months he mentioned. Since he remarks on being "quite sore" it's probably around the higher range but we'll be conservative for a more accurate range and say he's only grown 2.5 cm (0.98 in). Now Akechi seems the type of guy to document his height down to multiple decimal points but I'm only willing to round to the hundredths place giving us a high point of 159.99 cm (5 ft 2.99 in) and a low of 150 cm (4 ft 11.06 in). The growth is at least 2.5 cm (0.98 in) so he's currently between 152.5 cm (5 ft 0.04 in) and 159.99 cm (5 ft 2.99 in) and used to be between 150 cm (4 ft 11.06 in) and 157.49 cm (5 ft 2 in).)
T/N: The first kanji in Touma (透真) and the first kanji in Akechi/Asumi (明智/明日) make the kanji for invisibility (透明)
(All kanji copied from the wiki except the 日 in the Asumi kanji which isn't there for some reason and took me multiple google searches describing what it looked like to find and you can imagine how stupid I felt when simply putting in "asumi kanji" got me the correct kanji but you can also literally look up "day kanji" and get the symbol by itself, anyway this profile data sheet was definitely the most pain in the ass to transcribe and it was even majorly due to the essay I had to copy about his height that we still don't even know!)
24. (From: Vol 24 Ch 260)

Unfortunately there is no Olympic wrestling for 5 year olds so Yuuta does not get to compete in any league of the Olympics.
Kurumi, Yumehara, Teruhashi, Kumi, Rifuta, Aiura, and Akechi did not provide their weights which as you can imagine makes it somewhat difficult to sort them into weight classes.
They can all just wrestle each other I guess. (My money's on Aiura)

W planach min.
Kurwa do czego?

Everything listed in this post is my original work (including the banner above heh :) Please mind the tags on each fic! Search #cabbage art tag to find my art- some, not all, is smutty so please be warned!
Inheritance- Read on Ao3 - Longer One-shot, Aang and Zuko spend a wine and laughter-soaked night reading through unsent letters from Sozin to Roku on the eve of Aang's 27th birthday festival. Written for Zukaang mini Bingo April 2024
Delicate- Read on Ao3-Short one-shot of Aang and Zuko's relationship facing a painful memory 10 years post-war, written for Flash Fic Friday
First Light- Read on Ao3- A cozy, smutty, sunrise imagery-drenched, and slightly angsty one-shot of Aang and Zuko 14 years post-war. Written for Avatar-Year-Of-The-Dragon prompt, "Have your way with me"
I Know- Read on Ao3- An extremely, let me repeat extremely lol, self-indulgent smutty one-shot of Aang and Zuko's established relationship.
Marigold, chapter 1 of Blue- Read on Ao3- The first chapter of an in-progress Zukaang fic, exploring their delicate love for one another through the sometimes harsh complexity of their lives as leaders. Bewitched - Read on Ao3 - ongoing series- Originally ch. 1 was written for Flash Fic Friday, but turned into an ongoing fic about Aang and Zuko questioning their relationship in the face of Zuko being pressured to find a wife and produce an heir, 6 chapters up so far stay tuned!
Mercy and Lightning - ficlet inspired by this post - Zuko won't let Aang rest until he's mastered redirecting lightning

No... i zawsze nas równo rozjeżdża.

Później Baby Face mnie odprowadził do domu i sobie trochę pogadaliśmy.
***
A dziś nadal wolne.

Ja mam styl jedzenia "mało i często".
No gra lepiej ode mnie, więc będę mogła zobaczyć jak mi dopierdziela "moim własnym pomysłem"... Trochę mnie to zmartwiło....

Hunt for Kyoshi: Lord help me and this writers block. I know what must be done but the words I want aren't flowing like I want. orz (we are 7 pages into ch 12, but god it is hard). I plan on finishing Arc 1 around chapter ch 15 I believe.
Thief in the Avatar's Estate: Still on hiatus after finishing Arc 1. The first chapter in arc 2 (aka chapter 11) is 16 pages long *sobs* Not completed. Might split it into two chapters *sigh* Don't want to but que sera sera (just know where ch 12 ends is where I wanted ch 11 to end u_u).
Two Knives: Working on, hopefully, the final chapter of Arc 1 (I'm afraid of it being split into two chapters too TT0TT). Still need to write 1.5 chapters of Rangi's POV (wasn't planning to but....eh I kinda think I should now. 8U)
The Fire Sage Fiasco: Chapter 4 is started but not very far. It's more or less planned out though.

I sort of like the thought that Zuko and Aang take the Sun Warriors' warning not to tell anyone about the dragons a little more seriously… and they keep it between them. Of course, they trust Sokka, Toph and Katara. Of course they know they wouldn’t tell anyone, but now three people (including Iroh) know the truth about Ran and Shaw. And that’s three too many when you’re trying to keep a secret.
(and there are other people at the temple as well - like Haru, Teo and The Duke - who, while trustworthy, aren’t as close to them as the others, and when it comes to secrets with as much consequence as this one, you can’t afford to take any chances.)
Furthermore, the culture within the Fire Nation since Sozin’s rein has been warped. The culture is not to respect the dragons as the original firebenders, it’s to conquer and kill them. It’s the ultimate proof of your strength as a firebender. All it takes is one mistake before rumour spreads, and people go looking for the ultimate hunt. It’s not something Zuko or Aang can risk.
Whether Katara, Toph and Sokka (and Suki) ever find out the truth is up to you. But post-war, after Zuko returns from a strange, poorly explained trip with a dragon, and eventually develops the ability to use rainbow fire, either the others have some questions about Aang’s knowing look, or they are finally let in on a monumental secret.
#it’s a kids show so i think for that reason it was played for laughs about keeping the dragons a secret is not necessarily a bad choice...#the show does that sometimes where it says something off hand and then leaves me lying face down contemplating ✨the consequences✨ of that#but there are some… implications there about being too loose lipped with the truth in leading up to the end of and immediately post#war fire nation. just because zuko understands the spiritual significance of a dragon it does not mean the rest of his people will. actuall#its more likely that they'd reject zuko's opinion considering that he's basically coming into power and then telling everyone that#they've been lied to their whole lives. the fire nation is drowning in propaganda. for a lot of people this opinion of dragons and#firebending's true nature being violence and destruction is all they know. fire is LIFE but to most people that's an alien concept#and in terms of keeping secrets - it’s not even a matter of trust it’s a matter of too many people knowing#you might not even realised you’ve revealed some incredible information to someone who has the means to spread it or pursue it#so… i think zuko would be hyper aware of this. since he grew up hearing stories about the 'glory' of dragon hunting#and since iroh has also made a concerted effort to keep this information hidden i think it makes sense he’d be very hesitant to let it#get out to the public#aang would agree i think esp if zuko explained the importance of hiding them even from loved ones#ALSO random but it also makes me wonder what the fire nation said about roku in wake of the war#he had a dragon but he didn’t kill it. he didn’t ’conquer’ it#sozin would have had to work his ASS off to reframe history as him being the more… loyal(?) patriotic (?) of the two#did he frame it as roku didn’t have the courage to kill a dragon??? that he lacked the strength of a true firebender?#the avatar works hard but sozin's propaganda machine works harder 🧍♀️#ch: zuko#ch: aang#avatar the last airbender#zuko & aang#jack talks#sun warriors#book 3#what is it with me having a whole separate post in the tags 👁️👄👁️

Hey there, can I ask how you come up with your OC names?
Anon I am THRILLED you asked because I am about to dump so much in-my-head-only worldbuilding on you, so much more than you probably needed or wanted lol.
As always this is not short, and forgive in advance the butchery I’m about to do of like, all of phonetics and linguistics.
OKAY so generally speaking, when it comes to names I have a set of foundational building blocks/general guidelines for the various countries and I work from there. These are based on phonetic characteristics of the canon names we see, and then from there I'd start layering in additional fun along groupings I've noticed around gender or class or family lines or whatever if I want to take the worldbuilding that deep.
So for example, with the Water Tribes…
We have Sokka, Katara, Hakoda, Bato, Kya all from the South, so I pick out...
Hard K or T sounds being quite common
Primarily A and O as vowels
Vowels being between consonants (ie, being single vowels)
Names being 2-3 syllables
In the North, we see Yue, Hahn, Agna Qel’a, Arnook, Kanna, Pakku...
Some similarities with the Ks and hard Qs
Now we see some softer ‘gn’ and ‘hn’ and L sounds, and the addition of P (which makes Bato’s “B” and Sokka’s “S” stand out)
Some ‘oo’ instead of ‘o’ vowels (so double vowels)
Hahn and Yue with no hard consonant sound at all (and both upper class!)
So that gives us some basic starting blocks to start building up names that sound like they fit within the Water Tribe culture in terms of sounds, as well as some potential regional and class differences to start working with! (Maybe Q sounds are only in the North, and upper-class people have soft consonant names, for example.)
Similarly in the Fire Nation…
The royal family is Zuko, Azula, Ozai, Azulon, Sozin, Iroh, Lu Ten, so...
A lot of Z and K sounds
(Male) names that end in N
A lot of two-syllable names (with the emphasis on the first syllable)
A lot of riffs on each other (Sozin and Ozai, Azulon and Azula, Azulon and Zuko)
Iroh and Lu Ten stand out as having fairly distinct names comparatively, with the “oh” ending and the softer "Ir" and "Lu" starts
Chan, Zhao, and Ruon-Jian are the other upper-class guys we see, which gives us...
short syllables again
N endings (for men) agai
The ‘two word’ name again (so Lu Ten's name naming structure is used elsewhere)
The introduction of “Ch” and “J” and “R” and double-vowel sounds (ao, uo, ia)
We also see Roku and Kuzon...
So very similar names to our royal bunch with those Ks and Zs and oku/uko and uzon/ulon sounds
Also older names from 100+ years ago, and commoner names
Mai, Ursa, Ty Lee as our upper-class ladies gives us...
short syllables again
‘two word’ names again
M sounds!
Mai and Ursa both don't have a hard consonant stop
Some phonetic/vibey similarity with “Mai” and “Ty”
And adding in Chit Sang (another commoner!) (presumably!)...
Another two-word name
Introduces the ‘ng’ ending
Leverages a lot of the consonant sounds we already saw
Uses an “it” usage of the "I" vowel (vs Iroh’s I)
So pulling it all together, in addition to those foundational consonant and vowel sounds, we also see that the royal family has a distinct naming convention that may be rooted in archaic naming styles.
And we can start to build out some ideas around gendered naming, family/honorific naming, and some potential class/pre-unification culture differences, as well as some space to speculate about why Iroh and Lu Ten’s names are so different from the rest of the royal family, too (as well as the ammunition to suggest that Zhao comes from a family of suck-ups lol)
Moving onto the Earth Kingdom (where I truly went wild)…
We start off with Toph, Haru, Long Feng, Kuei, Jet, Bumi, Poppy, Lao, and there's a lot of varability here!
Generally, the names are one or two syllables and start with a consonant
We see more double-vowel pairs (uei, ao), perhaps in the upper class but just as many single vowels
Consonants are hard or soft, and don't seem to group like the Water Tribe or FN royals did around particular sounds
Names end in vowels or hard sounds or softer 'ph' and 'ng'
Those guardrails are fairly wide and broad for feeling out distinct-sounding names, but it makes sense given how huge the Earth Kingdom is and its history of war, displacement, movement, etc.
So for a fic like That Love You've Been Looking For which was super EK-centric and focused on worldbuilding, I ended up breaking it down into broad regions and leaning into place names as well to help articular some basic rules:
In the southwest (Gaoling, Toph, Lao, Poppy), I decided that there’d be a mix of single and two-word names, and that the ‘ph’ ending would be used by women and the ‘ng’ ending for men
On the western coast (Haru, Omashu, Bumi), I went with primarily two-syllable names that follow a ONE-two pattern (PA-lo, BU-mi, CHE-lu, HA-ru) and went with mostly softer consonants
In the north (Ba Sing Se, Si Wong Desert, Long Feng), I went with short multi-word names where each part would be a single syllable
And in the center I was kind of pulling it together from what was left, but I went with names that end with an ‘an’ or ‘in’ sound and echoed some of the place names I was using
So we have some building blocks for the various regions, this time that we can use to indicate where someone’s family could be from and to give each region a more specific feel.
For Kyoshi...
I generally lift the Earth Kingdom rules, but view it as more of a trade-center and melting pot (Suki could fit in WT or FN rules), so it's deliberately a lot looser and with more variation.
And everywhere has a Lee/Li, so none of these rules are hard and fast, and I imagine too that there’s a ton of cultural mixing and fads and trends and whatnot in naming across various regions.
A quick note from a process standpoint--
This approach is very much not trying to find names within various existing real-world cultures. If I'm writing ATLA canon-world, I tend to stick to the idea of leveraging real-world contexts as a base rather than a strict guide. Something I wanted to flag, as there are other ways to go about OC naming that lean much more heavily into researching the naming conventions of various cultures throughout history, thinking about translation and name meaning, etc.
And also, if I need a lot of names, I'll often use the Fantasy Name Generator and look for names that either fit or that I can tweak into the above 'rules.' (Otherwise I accidentally start giving people ship names lol, RIP to Mailee, Maizula, and Yutara, you lived on under new personas)
I also don't always dig as deeply into the way names can signify class or status or whatnot, either. It can be very fun, but sometimes you just need a one-off name so your POV character looks like they actually interact with the people they nominally see every day haha
Editing 10/24 to add - this is representative of my prior approach, going forward I have shifted to leveraging real names as much as possible and building headcanons around, for example, different real-world inspired cultural influences within the nations
#asks and answers#anons really teeing me up#atla#world building#fic writing#I like getting into gender and class stuff (or the noticeable lack of it) with names#It can be really fun to play with in the background to signal things about a culture or particular character

Nest Fellows Ch. 6
A KevRiko Collaboration with @noomyart, posted in 6 parts.
Summary: Kevin Day and Riko Moriyama have been the Sons of Exy for as long as they both can remember. They've always been one & two, King & Queen, master & pet, future founders of the perfect Court, but what if there's also something more hidden beneath the surface? What if, when push comes to shove, instead of veering down separate paths, they summed up their parts to fight the system meant to contain them?
Trigger Warnings for:
Graphic Depictions of Violence
Mentions of Jean's abuse
Sexual Content
Tetsuji Moriyama being the absolute piece of shit he is
Chapter 6: Roku
The pomp and circumstance around the shoot-off was the same as any other game Riko and Kevin ever attended, minus the team that usually stood at their back and the four quarters waiting to be played through. There were the same number of referees on both sides of the court, watching the two of them enter from opposite ends like true opponents. The crowd went wild when Riko raised his racquet to the sky, soaking in the roar that greeted him. Kevin did the same and closed his eyes under the choking boom of voices overhead, drowning the stadium in a deafening cacophony of chants and warcries.
Both athletes walked to center court where captains usually met for the coin toss. A referee met them there with his coin at the ready. “Are you prepared for this, boys?” He asked over the loud stomp and clap of the riled fans. Riko nodded first, then Kevin. The referee nodded and flipped the coin, catching it on the back of his hand to a sudden influx of deafening silence. He revealed the head of the coin and pointed a straight arm at Riko. The crowd roared back to life and the referee backed up to his position while Riko and Kevin came forward to shake hands.
Kevin grabbed at his wrist and Riko returned the grip. It was the same old song and dance, except this time, Riko slipped his fingers under Kevin’s helmet and Kevin happily removed it a second later. Holding it against his hip, he did the same to Riko’s, watching his partner peel off his helmet and reveal tousled black hair. He resisted the urge to fist it in his fingers and tug his head back to kiss him in front of all these people. Instead, he teased his fingers along his jaw and up his cheek to cover the number one stark against pale skin. Riko did the same, and they lowered their foreheads together. Another cacophonous cheer raged from the adjoining crowd.
“Do your best out there,” Riko told him.
Kevin returned, “Give me a number to match, King .”
Riko opened his eyes to glance up at him through his lashes, lips crooking into a smirk.
Then the whistle blew and the two separated to go to their opposite sides. One referee came forward with a machine made to launch balls clean at them. A couple more officials stood on either side of the goal lines, two more at half-court. Riko took his place at center stage and accepted the first ball, throwing it up and down a moment while the announcers told the audience all the rules. As soon as they finished, the referee controlling the ball machine got a final nod from Riko before calling for the shoot-off to begin.
Riko was the best in this game, only rivaled by Kevin himself, and he showed it the moment that first ball went flying. Without any defense to protect the goal, he was a train without brakes speeding down the tracks. Every ball that shot out of the machine was an opportunity that he chased down like his life depended on it, scooping up each one with practiced ease and clean focus. He launched them in familiar angles to ricochet off the court walls and into the goal with a flash of red the instant they hit their mark. Kevin could practically feel the jitters running through Riko’s abused muscles, getting excited for his chance to match him. And Riko was certainly giving him a number to fight for.
By the time the buzzer sounded and his round came to an end, the number was well into the double digits. It was just enough leeway for Kevin to let loose without needing to worry about their plan going awry.
The crowd cheered as soon as Riko’s racquet got thrust into the air, rising to their feet to bestow upon their King the praise he rightfully deserved. The commentator cheered, “ Another loud round of applause for our first challenger! " The crowd was happy to oblige while Riko shucked his helmet and wiped his forehead on his arm guards. He left the court for the outer wall and banged thrice to be let off.
The official undid the lock and let him through, but Riko stopped just in front of Kevin with that tantalizingly haughty grin of his. “Don’t disappoint me, Aibou ,” was said with just enough of a tease for Kevin’s stomach to twist with both anticipation and affection. It only knotted itself up more when Riko brushed his arm on his way by, gloved fingers nearly hooking in his for just a second.
It took him being herded by the referee to move through the door to inner Court, slipping on his helmet with a deep, stabilizing breath along the way. Kevin looked up at the scoreboard again and stared at the red numbers stark against black plastic and metal. Sixty-nine . Nice of Riko to not hold back on his account.
Taking his place at the center line where Riko just stood, Kevin tested the weight of his racquet and gave the netting a firm tug. Once he was satisfied it would hold up through the challenge ahead, he addressed the crowd with a look and a thrust of his racquet into the air. The assembled fans all cheered while he glanced at the scoreboard one last time.
Alright, sixty-nine . He could do that.
The official prompted him for a sign of readiness and Kevin offered it with a single decisive nod. Accepting the first ball to start the challenge, he gave it a couple experimental tosses before the referee nodded and blew his whistle. Readying himself, Kevin counted down in his head. One…two…three…
The buzzer went off and he landed the first goal with a roar of the ball machine rumbling to life. The rest of the challenge was a blur of rising numbers and red lights. He was scooping up balls in between steps, shooting them at impossible speeds, at impossible angles. He barely had time to check the lights to be sure each shot took, more preoccupied with the deafening tick-tock of the decreasing seconds on the clock. Sweat beaded along his hairline around twenty-five, starting to trickle when he got to fifty. Tension fell like a blanket over the stadium when he got to sixty, hearing the heavy boom, boom, boom of the last seconds ticking down. The ba-bump, ba-bump, ba-bump of his thumping heart racing in his ears.
He counted the last shots off in his head–sixty-seven, then sixty-eight came not two seconds later. He scooped up sixty-nine with five seconds left on the clock, taking a breath as he aimed the shot with extra precision and watched it hit home. He felt the whole crowd hold their breath as he went for the next ball, picking one just far enough away that when he got it up in his net, the final second bleeped down and the loud buzzer sounded the end of his round as a draw.
It took a second before the announcer said, “ I can't believe it, folks…we have a tie! " The crowd came to life in a mass of cheers and jeers, thirsty for more blood, but certainly not disappointed by either of their performances. The officials all took a moment to look between each other, whispering under muted mics–probably about how to handle this situation. When one came to him and asked, “Would you like to go first for the second round?" Kevin shook his head–firm and decided.
“No,” he told him and the crowd at large. “You wanted to see who was better between us? You got your answer: neither of us.”
Another official let Riko onto the court and asked the two of them, “You really won’t settle this?”
“Why should we?" Riko shot back. “We are one and two. We are the Sons of Exy. To be perfect partners, we have to be a perfect match. What is more perfect than that?” he gestured at the scoreboard and the matching sixty-nine shining red on both sides of it.
The official turned to Tetsuji for an answer, but Kevin and Riko weren’t waiting to see what he said. They went to the locker room to get changed out before anyone could try and make them do more.
Making sure they were hidden away from the eyes and ears of the press, Kevin dared to say, “The Master is going to be livid.”
“Let him come,” Riko dismissed. “We fought that fight fair and square, just the way the rules called for. No one ever decided what would happen if we were to tie. That was on them.”
Kevin couldn't agree more, but now that the adrenaline was wearing off, there was an empty hole for anxiety to fill. He glanced back at the door in anticipation, only turning back when Riko put his racquet right up against his locker and pulled his jersey over his head in one smooth move. It had been weeks since the last time he was allowed to ogle Riko’s exposed flesh–longer, still, since the last time he was allowed to touch. Kevin knew Riko could see the desperation in his eyes. It was mirrored in the amusement tilting Riko’s lips as he dropped his jersey on the bench and glanced at Kevin.
Riko slipped his thumb underneath one of the straps on his padding and invited, “Undo me?”
Kevin moved to do just that when the door to the locker room opened and Tetsuji came storming in with a rage of fans and reporters raring to see beyond the privacy afforded by the door. Riko ignored them in favor of meeting his Uncle’s glare with an immovable stare. But the Master was not impressed. “A press conference will be held after you see me in my office." He then strode past them and right to the exit back into the Nest, leaving Kevin and Riko to gawk in his wake.
“He's upset,” Kevin worried aloud mere seconds later.
Riko hummed a moment before he said, “Get dressed.”
“But Riko,” he tried, “what are we going to do about–”
“I said,” Riko interrupted, “get dressed . I will handle him.”
There was something relieving about Riko taking charge of the situation–something familiar and reassuring. It was easier to go through the motions of unclipping all his padding to change back into their usual team sweats than think about what came next. There were a lot of nuances to their plan they didn't account for, a fact he left for future Kevin to handle at such a time when future Kevin was ready to handle them, but now? This present Kevin stared down the glaring issues with their half-baked idea and nearly voiced them when Riko turned to him and took hold of his chin with a meaningful look. “We will be fine. I won't let him hurt you." Leading him down into a short kiss, he asked, “Do you trust me?”
“With my life,” Kevin answered dutifully. Riko considered that a moment before he gave a firm nod and promptly grabbed for his racquet. Kevin eyed it one long moment before his partner jerked his head toward the exit and led the way from the locker room.
They bypassed the rest of the team by taking the Black Hall toward His Uncle’s secluded office. Riko had the courtesy to knock when they arrived, waiting for his Uncle to order them in before he gave Kevin a final nod and opened the door to let him in. It shut behind the two of them a moment later and Kevin only dared look at the Master once they were both settled before his desk. In turn, Tetsuji eyed Riko’s racquet with interest and said, “Good of you to bring the object for your punishment without first being asked. You must know just how poorly you’ve performed here today.”
Kevin opened his mouth to speak up, but Riko pressed a restricting hand to his chest. It remained there as Tetsuji came around his desk and upon the two of them with his arms crossed. He held out a hand for Riko’s racquet and said, “You will kneel and recite back to me what you both have done to deserve this.”
Riko looked from Tetsuji to Kevin, and lifted his racquet from where it rested at his side. For a moment, Kevin worried he might forget their plan and hand it over, but in between Tetsuji reaching for it and Kevin silently pleading with his eyes, Riko raised his stick above his head and brought it crashing down on their coach with a hefty swing.
Riko's racquet landed with a sickening crack against Tetsuji's shoulder and Kevin flinched from the resulting crash when his body slammed into the desk behind him with a cry of pain. Their coach scrambled for purchase on the polished surface, barely finding his feet before he grabbed at his injury and glared right at his nephew with angry black eyes. “What do you think you’re doing? I will not stand this infraction!”
Riko stepped forward with a familiar hungry grin, licking his lips with a new face of sadism Kevin had never seen on him in all their years together. He didn't lift his racquet all the way over his head, careful to aim with a held back thwack to Tetsuji’s sensitive ribs with another sickening crunch of fracturing bones. The force of the blow nearly doubled their Coach over where he fought to keep his feet beneath his unsteady weight.
"How does it feel, Uncle ?" Riko taunted, glancing down at his racquet and giving it a slight heft that made Tetsuji flinch back from the mere threat of another incoming hit. Riko smirked at that reaction like a man starved. “I don't scare you,” he asked, “do I, Uncle? After all,” he took a step forward and handed his racquet off to Kevin who took it in one gloved hand without question, “you’re the one who made me what I am , aren't you?”
“Back up ,” Tetsuji warned, trying for a threatening step that failed when Riko pressed a hand flat to his chest and shoved him right back into his desk with another loud thump . The Master snarled, “keep your unworthy hands to yourself!”
Riko snorted. “Unworthy?" He rolled his shoulders and bit off a laugh, turned into a growl as his fist made perfect contact with Tetsuji’s jaw, snapping his head to the side. He punched him again and again, raining down strikes like a man possessed. Tetsuji tried to grab for each one, but Riko deflected him and eventually stopped his struggle by grabbing at his arm and popping it to an odd angle with a cry of pain and a sickening crack . "Don’t you like the monster you've created?" He demanded with a terrifying, unhinged chuckle.
"Stop this, Riko! You can’t–" Tetsuji tried to beg–maybe reprimand–but Riko wasn't listening.
"This is what you get," he growled as he grabbed his racquet from Kevin’s shaking fist and hit his Uncle right in the center of the chest with the butt of it, dropping him to his knees, back still trapped against the desk behind it. Riko threw his racquet away and stood over him. He grabbed his target by the lapels of his fancy suit and lifted him clean off the ground with a nasty tug. “For every hit you ever landed on me, I'm going to return the pain to you tenfold, old man. I'm going to rip you apart, one limb at a time, just the way you taught me to. I'm going to take every private lesson you ever beat into me and I'm going to give you something to haunt your every waking nightmare for the rest of your worthless fucking–"
" Riko ," Kevin reached forward and grabbed at his shoulder, looking over it at where Tetsuji stared at the two of them in muted horror.
"Kevin," Tetsuji tried in a weak, vulnerable tone, "do not let him do this. Think of your career–of your future.” When Kevin didn't react to that motivation, he tried again. “What would your mother think if she saw you like this?"
The question nearly hit him square in the throat with its sheer audacity. "My mother?” Kevin repeated. He glanced at Riko a moment and gestured for him to let the man go. Riko did so, taking a couple steps back to stand guard over their captive, arms crossed over his chest. Kevin ducked down low beside Tetsuji and hissed, "Answer me, first: what would she think if she saw you like this? Hurting her son for the purpose of your own legacy. Beating your own child? She would be disgusted ." Tetsuji flinched back from that word. Kevin spat, “She would hate you almost as much as I do, maybe almost as much as Riko does. But she’s not here, is she? Is she !”
Tetsuji kept his mouth shut and Kevin searched him for any sign of remorse. When he saw no such emotion behind his eyes, he stood up and let him go with a growl. “Come on, Riko,” he invited, “he's not worth it."
Riko pulled the switchblade from his pocket and flipped it open with practiced ease. “You sure we can trust him not to cause us trouble?”
Kevin glanced at their old coach and shrugged. “His funeral if he tries. We have all the evidence we need to tear apart his entire empire and then some, and we’re far more valuable to your father alive than he is dead.”
Riko considered that answer a moment before he shrugged and allowed it. He delivered one final kick to the fallen man for good measure before following Kevin to the exit.
As they reached the door, Tetsuji tried again, "You cannot leave like this! I own you two! Do you know what the family will do without my protection?"
Kevin glanced back at him and said, "And do you know what they'll do when they find out you let us get away? I like our odds.”
He followed Riko’s back out into the hall, barely getting the door shut before Riko pressed him up against it. Kevin went stalk still under that hungry gaze so fucking close to his, but then Riko kissed him with a force like a tidal wave of relief crashing over every single one of his rattled nerves. He leaned into every clash of tongues and teeth, wrapping his arms tight about Riko’s waist and turning him with a startled gasp to pin him in place with a hard thud . He devoured him with every ounce of his being, dropping his hand to grab at his knee and hike it up to his own hip. That alone gave him plenty of room to slot their hips together and further pin his captain right against the entrance to their former prison.
Kevin was tempted– very tempted–to get Riko off right here, where anyone could see them, but Riko pressed a hand to his chest and pushed him back just enough to break the kiss and hold Kevin at bay. Kevin whined at him and Riko managed a husky, "Get Jean and text Jeremy. I’m going to pack our bags."
Kevin frowned at him, lust-addled mind quickly jumping through hoops to arrive at, "Why Jeremy? South Carolina is closer, and Wymack–"
Riko silenced him with lips on his own, thumb covering his number as black met green for a long moment. "Do as I say, Kevin. We will figure this out on our own. Right now, you need to focus on collecting our number three so we can get out .”
Kevin looked back at the hall and asked, “What about the rest?”
Riko kissed him and answered, “You and Jean are my only problems." Then he gave him another push and ordered, “Go–I will handle the rest.” Kevin offered only one more kiss to his number One before he obeyed and went to get everything ready for their life on the run. For freedom .

NATLA Ep. 2 "Warriors" thoughts
Okay I have less to say and I wanna move on to the next ep haha but, overall, solid. Merging the Zhao storyline into Kyoshi Island was a good thing but I don't like the loss of the Agni Kai or that Zuko didn't technically attack the village. Suki is bae, love her and the Sukka interactions were good. Zhao as a ch is underwhelming so far and doesn't have the gravitas that the OG did but eh. I do think there's way too much emphasis on Kyoshi too soon and it feels wrong for Aang to "meet" her before he does Roku but I'm not writing the whole thing off yet.
The most interesting change to me so far is having Katara experience PTSD from her mother's death and being triggered by firebending. So in this version she was actually there when Kya died which is BRUTAL and I look forward to seeing how they reveal more about her trauma and the story goes on. I can see myself digging this take but NATLA needs Katara to have more to do in general.
Based on the description we're not only getting Bumi next ep but also the Mechanist AND Jet and the Freedom Fighters so, oh boy, let's see how that goes.

i'm now about halfway through avatar: the last airbender s2 (and halfway through the entire series). and i have thoughts.
i regret missing out on this while it was airing. chest deep in anime at the time, i'd largely turned my back on american TV animation and was in the midst of wrapping up a bachelor's degree. A:TLA would probably have won me over then too. it holds its own as a story so well even now, i don't mind being two decades late to the party.
A:TLA takes place in a constructed world largely based on ancient china, with recognizable chunks from many, many other east asian peoples and subarctic indigenous nations stirred in. american fantasy worlds rooted in real-world places often tend towards this kind of racist pan-cultural stew (black panther—my deep abiding love for it otherwise—is another example) and A:TLA, a dish that manages to be both deeply honorable and kinda disrespectful, is no exception.
for every display of cultural respect:
all the chinese text in the show is real, supervised and/or translated by ming dynasty historian, research scientist and calligrapher dr. siu-leung lee.
the selection process for the avatar closely mirrors that for the actual dalai lama, right down to the search for a child born around the time of the previous lama’s death who picks his relics out of a collection of possible playthings.
the elemental bending techniques and fight choreography are derived from real chinese martial art forms. 5th gen northern shaolin master sifu kisu, the series' main martial arts consultant, chose a form for each element based on its movements and/or philosophy. the water tribes use t'ai chi; earthbenders use the hung gar style of kung fu (and the blind earthbender toph fights with her own aggressive and rare style, chow gar kung fu); the fire nation use northern shaolin kung fu; and the air nomads use ba gua zhang, a style characterized by spinning and other circular motions.
aang sits with a guru who teaches him how to unlock his chakras at one point, and his explanation respects both aang's level of maturity and the complexity of the concept as laid out in hinduism.
avatar roku’s fire temple contains a lotus-petal shaped flame motif common in thai art and architecture; ty lee and katara wear split skirts that resemble those worn by thai performers of a ballet retelling of the hindu epic ramayana (it’s called ramakien in thailand). thai (and burmese!) traditional dance/theatre costume and armor show up everywhere in the fire nation, especially in the military garb. even zuko’s topknot is a traditional thai hairstyle (for children).
there are perhaps two or three of ignorance or apathy.
names in mandarin chinese, korean, tibetan, sanskrit or japanese are mostly butchered; mandarin sees the worst abuse because it's used most often. A:TLA was released at a time when it was still not uncommon for US anime distributors to change japanese names outright in localizations; producers figured 'american-sounding' names would go down easier with audiences. given this, i'm not surprised a mid-2000s american production inspired by anime wouldn't give a toss about names in other asian languages: most americans don't care. (personally i find the mispronounced names far harder to stomach than the dollops of buddhist-daoist-hindu philosophy purée: while A:TLA’s painstaking worldbuilding, tight plot and excellent voice acting make the show's faults stand out all the more, its spiritual aspects aren't a major focus.)
someone thought it would be a good idea to give a group of swamp dwellers vaguely cajun accents. whyyyyy.
the blending (read: conflation) of cultures ignores existing tensions and centuries of cross-pollination in ways that can be offensive. there are many, many other nods to thai (and vietnamese! and burmese! and...) culture in clothing, setting and architecture across the series, but the showrunners made no effort to educate viewers on the provenance of any of these smaller influences. people of non-chinese east asian ancestries already get mistaken for chinese by americans who assume they’re all the same.
and yet. while looking to cartoons for cultural sensitivity may be a fool's errand, A:TLA gets a lot right, particularly when it comes to its characters.
more about the people of A:TLA to follow in a subsequent post.
