“Okay… are you ready Michael?” You asked the large masked man, he gave a small nod and you handed him the blue and red sippy cup. You watched as he turned it over in his hands a few times before he chucked it as hard as he could against the wall, the cracking sound it made on impact caused you to wince. You walked over and picked up the smashed cup and shook your head.

“Well… this one is not it… let try the other one.” You said as you handed him a new sippy cup, this one was green and yellow, you watched as he looked it over. You looked down at the other eight or so sippy cups in the Walmart bag. Michael was rough on his little gear, he honestly couldn’t help it, sometimes he would knock things over or toss things to play with them not knowing his own strength, which led you to the situation you’re in now, with Michael throwing sippies against the wall to hopefully find one that won’t break.

You were pulled out of your thoughts by the loud sound, you walked over and picked up the cup, inspecting the way the acrylic shattered in on itself as you sighed. You handed him another.

Six out of ten sippy cups and all of them are broken beyond repair, you can sense that even Michael is getting a bit discouraged now even though he’d never admit it you know he hates that his little gear always breaks or is so much smaller than him. You sighed as you handed him the next, he stared at it for a moment before his shoulders slumped a bit. Your heart sank.

“Mikey, baby, hey… it’s okay… we’ll find one.” You say, hoping to reassure him but he just stares at you and you sigh, you looked up at him for a moment before nodding and setting the bag down, you go into your room and into the closet where you pulled the large box down and made your way back into the backyard where you had been throwing the sippies. You handed Michael the box and motioned for him to open it.

He opened it quickly, you could see his eyes widen a bit through the holes of his mask as he pulled out the large, adult sized sippy cup. You smiled at him.

“It was supposed to be a surprise for later… but… you deserve it now.” You explained and he looked at you, the cup, and the wall before back at you, you nodded.

“Go ahead… you can try throwing it.” You said and he did. It made a large thwack before rolling a bit, you picked it up and inspected it.

“We have a winner!” You say and Michael perks up, you look at him and smile.

“C’mon, Mikey, let’s go get you some chocolate milk.” You said, the man excitedly following you inside.

Welcome to the Macabre Machinery blog, a place dedicated to anything and everything I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. You can call me Macabre, or MM for short. This place serves as a spot for discussion, analyzation, and deep dives of the series, as well as the occasional banter, anecdote, and shitpost to lighten the mood :).

I created the original Macabre Machinery blog back in 2011, and ran it until early 2013, right before NightDive Studios recovered the rights of the video game adaptation and released it to a wider audience in September 2013. Before then, the series was entrenched in obscurity outside of older folks who grew up on the short stories of Harlan Ellison (and we know how much Boomers utilize Tumblr, right /s).

For years I immensely regret closing the blog so early in its run, but a decade later, after seeing that IHNMAIMS was finally getting the attention it so truly deserved, I decided to hop back in the rodeo for a second go.

100+ followers and thousands of notes, reblogs, and discussions later...I can safely say that I made the right decision.

Holes 20th Anniversary: Fanfic Edition!

If you thought I was going to let the Holes 20th anniversary pass me by without talking about fanfics, you were wrong!

I've been reading and writing Holes fanfics since, well, 2003! Back then they were all the same: a girl goes to CGL and falls in love with one of the guys. (I did this too! I'm calling myself out as well!) Usually Squid, sometimes Zigzag, and then Magnet coming after for the het ships. Otherwise SquidZag was THE ship of the fandom with a somewhat distant but close runner-up with SquidMag. (Stanley/Zero did have their supporters but they weren't as vocal then as they are now.)

So to say this far in the future when I dive back into the Holes fandom to read and that I was looking for something special or unique, it's an understatement.

I've read nearly every Holes fanfic available. I'v re-read my own (yes, even the really cringy one from the early 00s) and keep looking for something new to scratch my itch and I didn't think I'd ever find it.

And then I found Desperado by @theblerdbox on Wattpad and I. Was. Hooked.

It emulates the book's writing style in a way that, while brisk, doesn't lack substance. It's not a rewrite either, but its own story wrapped in the Holes universe to bring more background to the Zeronis and their lineage in a world of magic of mysticism.

With Tyler as the heroine and her connection not only to Stanley but to Zero, we get a new look into how Camp Green Lake runs, what the Zeronis were up to between Madam Zeroni casting her "curse" and Zero ending up at Camp Green Lake, and what exactly it means to live up to family expectations.

A great binge read that leaves me coming back for more, Desperado is a fresh take on Holes fanfiction with fantastic world-building, bright characters, and a tightly waved plot that would impress Louis Sachar himself. RJ leaves me astounded with every re-read due to all the carefully laid plot points and foreshadowing that, I'm sure, would get Louis Sachar's stamp of approval. You are missing out if you aren't reading this fanfic!

Bonus, it's followed up with an in-progress sequel called Wicked Games! Don't miss out!

I couldn't let this anniversary pass by without shouting out who I'm pretty sure is the only other person in the fandom with me, lol. This book and movie has brought a new and special friend in my life and I love knowing that there's someone else out there that understands just how much this book means, how much this book did for the world and storytelling, and how much I love Squid. (Jake will have a problem if he ever meets one of us, lol.)

@theblerdbox you're a fantastic writer and, as I say a lot, an amazing world-builder. You're very creative, innovative, and a bright spot in the fandom. I'm very lucky to be able to see your process up-close and constantly remain in awe at how you handle and pull all the puzzle pieces in your world together. You inspire me as a writer and as a creative persona and I can't wait to see what you do next! Happy 20th Holes anniversary!

“It’s not a kink though” I hear you arguing. And I say: yes it is. Beyond just the basic definition of what a kink is, let’s examine, for a moment, why we’re into the things we’re into. For pain play, maybe it’s testing your limits and willpower and seeing the marks they leave behind (or leaving those marks on your partner). For bondage, maybe it’s the feeling of helplessness, or the feeling of being restrained, or the lack of choice you have once you’re restrained. On a more related note, with cgl/ddlg, maybe it’s the act of caring for your partner and being cared for with your inner child at the forefront of that care, maybe it’s the taboo feeling of a power dynamic that resembles a parent and their child, maybe it’s the vulnerability of that power dynamic, so on and so forth. For incest/fauxcest, perhaps it’s the idea that a family member, someone who has seen you at your absolute worst and most awkward and most unreasonable and most insecure, has seen all of that and wants you anyway is alluring, maybe it’s the taboo of having to sneak around because you know what you’re doing is wrong. Do you see how that appeals to people? And this isn’t even touching on the fact that people who are victims of rape and incest and assault in real life sometimes use these kinds of things to cope or process what they’ve been through.

If you can’t wrap your head around the fact that this is all taboo sexy play pretend, that’s a you problem. If you cannot separate fantasy and fiction from reality, you need to probably go get therapy or something.

I ran a IHNM blog on Tumblr many aeons ago when the game was still considered Abandonware and Harlan Ellison was a name known mainly among Boomers. I closed the blog due to little activity on Tumblr, and now, years later, IHNMAIMS has garnered a huge cult following all over the spheres of the internet, and Ellison is wildly spinning in his grave. :)

So...what does this blog do? Talk, share art, shitpost, share more art, talk some more, answer questions, and shitpost again.

Joking aside, I couldn't be more thrilled to finally have a medium to discuss what was once an obscure hyper-fixation with other fans. This blog is a place to talk about and share the interesting, the amusing, as well as the controversial, raw, and contentious aspects of this series. It also serves as a place for those who may have had questions and thoughts regarding this series before, but haven't had a place for it or felt uncomfortable asking them. “Mommy, Mommy, look!”

Brooke looked up from her work to see Vanessa at the window, face pressed up against the glass, breath fogging it slightly.

“What is it, baby?” she slid her laptop aside, standing up to come over behind the smaller queen.

“Rain!” Vanessa bounced excitedly on her toes, and Brooke laughed. Big Vanessa always claimed to hate the rain, but there was nothing little Vanessa seemed to love more than the sight of puddles accumulating on the ground, the smell of fresh earth and the squelch of mud underneath her boots. It was absolutely adorable and admittedly infectious; Brooke couldn’t help but feel a little giddy herself as they looked out towards the city together, watching the tops of trees bend underneath the downpour, fat drops of water hitting the ground and rippling the surface of shallow, quickly-growing puddles.

“Mommy, can we go?” Brooke looked down with a start at Vanessa, whose eyes were as wide with excitement and hope as her Chicklet smile. Brooke chewed her lip.

“Are you sure, baby? Auntie Kiki will be coming in fifteen minutes, you don’t want to get big again before then?” A’Keria had been on vacation with her nephew for the last few weeks, and both Vanessa and Brooke had been feeling the Southern queen’s loss pretty hard. A’Keria was the kind of friend who called every day, who was always up in people’s business and meddling where she shouldn’t have been, usually to surprisingly good but nonetheless hilarious results.

I’m that one aunt at the reunion, you know, the one who got on the white church gloves and the pussycat wigs, sittin’ on the couch just listenin’ to all the bullshit and judgin’ y’all behind her tea and readin’ glasses?

But as much of a busybody as A'Keria was, she was never judgmental, and her sense of love for Vanessa and ‘pisces sensitivity’ meant that they could tell her anything, and she’d accept it all with open ears and a patient smile.

Which was why when Vanessa shook her head, insisting she wanted to stay little and play in the rain with or without A’Keria present, Brooke caved, grabbing her phone to warn A’Keria about what she’d see.

The truth was, A’Keria had already seen Vanessa in her littlespace; in fact, there were a few times when Vanessa had dropped and Brooke was too busy to play along where A’Keria had stepped in and babysat. She never seemed to mind; rather, she often teased that Vanessa was a big baby anyway, and that she was far less annoying with a pacifier shutting her up.

So when A’Keria showed up fifteen minutes later with a big box of animal crackers, Brooke was nothing but grateful.

“Auntie, auntie!” Vanessa came rushing the minute A’Keria stepped through the door, immediately tackling her in a big hug. “Mommy says we can play in the rain! Can you play too?” A’Keria chuckled.

“You bet your cute little tush I can, baby. But first, we gotta put on your boots and coat, right?”

Vanessa didn’t need any further cueing; within a few minutes, she had ‘helped’ Brooke put on her boots and rain-coat (little Vanessa was never very coordinated, and always seemed to mix up her right and left feet), and the three of them had made their way outside, down to their building’s parking lot. It wasn’t the safest setting, sure, but there were limits to what Brooke could allow; as much as they liked to think of home as a safe haven, if they ventured outside, they could never be sure who would clock them, how fast the fans would jump on a chance to spread pictures and rumours around.

“You know, you ain’t gotta worry as much about her as I know you do.” A’Keria came up next to Brooke in the building’s back alcove, watching carefully as Vanessa ran ahead, diving boots-first into the very first puddle she set her happy little eyes on. Brooke laughed softly and shook her head.

“I can’t help it. I mean, just look at her.” she let her eyes trail over Vanessa, then realized with a jolt that the smaller queen wasn’t wearing her hood. A’Keria laughed loudly as Brooke jolted forward, running into the rain to stop Vanessa and pull her hood up over her head, smiling pinching Vanessa’s cheek before letting her turn back to her game.

“You were saying?” A’Keria cocked an eyebrow, joining Brooke next to Vanessa, both of them having resigned to the fact that they were destined to get wet.

“I love seeing her so happy like this.” Brooke murmured, her whole heart soaring as she watched Vanessa continue to run around, her hands raised above her head in an attempt to ‘catch’ as many droplets as she could. “There’s nothing I wouldn’t do to make sure she can have moments like this.”

“I know.” A’Keria smiled warmly. She seemed like she was going to say something else, but before she had the chance, Brooke surged forward grabbing Vanessa by the waist and pulling her back.

“Baby, don’t touch the worms, they’re dirty!” she scolded. Her worry immediately turned to guilt, though, when Vanessa turned to look up at her, her lip quibbling and eyes as big as dinner plates.

“Oh no, baby, don’t cry.” she softened, clicking her tongue as she brought Vanessa in for a tight hug. “Mommy’s so sorry for yelling. I was just worried.”

She felt Vanessa’s hands on her back and face burrowed in her shoulder, and relaxed a little, patting the smaller queen’s back, rocking her a little back and forth on their feet.

“Why don’t you show mommy the worms and we can look at them instead of touching them? And Auntie Kiki can see them too?”

Just like that, everything was okay again, and Vanessa was back to her normal, cheery little self, excitedly chattering about the worms and giggling while helping Brooke and A’Keria come up with names, stories, and personalities for their new wriggly friends.

–“Nice to have some grown-up time, huh?” A’Keria grinned as she sat down at the kitchen table across from Brooke, who rolled her eyes as she sipped her hot chocolate. Once they had come in from the rain, Brooke had towelled Vanessa off, changed her into her pajamas, and tucked her into bed with her pacifier, teddy bear, and a mug of hot chocolate, then sat down to spend some time with A’Keria while her baby slept the afternoon off.

“I can see why you like this so much.” A’Keria continued, taking a sip from her own piping mug. “I ain’t never seen you two lookin’ so happy together. And that’s sayin’ something, ‘cause the way you two are when you both normal, girl, I could vomit.” Brooke laughed but said nothing.

They were happy together. And this thing they had started, this dynamic or relationship or bond, whatever anyone wanted to call it, had only ever brought them closer.

There was a whimper on the other side of the door, and Brooke immediately snapped to attention.

“Sounds like someone wants a cuddle.” A’Keria laughed softly, shaking her head in amusement at Brooke’s reaction. “Go, it’s okay. I been here for a while anyway, I should get going. Talk to you later?”

Brooke smiled gratefully, already on her way over to the bedroom as A’Keria made her way towards the front door to let herself out. “See you tomorrow, A’Keria.”

She fell asleep with Vanessa in her arms, heartbeats synced as they both nestled into each other, enjoying the warm feeling of being held and supported.

Outside, the rain continued to pound on, tapping out a gentle rhythm on their window and washing the earth clean.
