The Perfect Nanny by Leila Slimani is the March read for @criminallygoodbookclub “Myriam goes back to work and she and Paul look for a nanny for their children. They find Louise - who is a great cook, cleans the house and the kids love her. But something dark lurks under the perfect nanny facade...” The children are killed on the first page so you know right away something is off. Louise has a lot of issues. BUT WE NEVER FIND OUT WHY!!! This book is missing a big part - Why did Louise snap? There are hints. I wish Slimani had let the readers know a little more. What really happened to her daughter? This is a quick read-very short chapters. Feels like a bit is lost in the translation. The horror of the chicken carcass is pretty vivid 😱 Book was okay, but the missing pieces keep it from being exceptional. #theperfectnanny #leilaslimani #paperback #cgbookclub #bookdropbox #bookstagram #bookshelf #booknerd #bookhoarder #bookworm #booklover #bookish #bookreview #bookclub #novel #bookaddict #bookaholic #bookcover #bookhaul #bibliophile #goodreads #homelibrary #bradslibrary #fiction #paperback

Hello everyone and happy Friday! Today I want to shout very briefly from the roof tops about a book I recently finished which happened to be my first Riley Sager. I know, I know - I’ll absolutely be remedying that in the future and read the rest of the books that have been released. ⁣ ⁣ Home Before Dark was the October pick for the @criminallygoodbookclub and one I was highly anticipating for the above mentioned reason and that it was the perfect time of year to read a novel with the theme of a haunted house. ⁣ ⁣ This book completely sucked me in and was deliciously eerie and thrilling. I loved the dual time line ensuring the reader was treated to the story of our protagonist Maggie, twenty-five years ago as a small girl and then during the present day, as an adult taking ownership of the house once more. ⁣ ⁣ Riley Sager sets the scene perfectly and pulls off the paranormal aspects wonderfully well. It made me feel uncomfortable, I felt chilled and uneasy, the hairs rose on the back of my neck more than once and I even glanced behind me at one point just to check, you know? 😂⁣ ⁣ If this is a measure of the effect of Sager’s novels on me, I think I’ve hit the ground running! I’m definitely keen to read more and SOON.⁣ ⁣ The full five stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⁣ ⁣ #bookstagram #booklover #bookworm #bookreview #fivestarreads #homebeforedark #rileysager #readingonmykindle #halloweenreads #cgbookclub https://www.instagram.com/p/CG-qydwAOgI/?igshid=1pnl2unirwup8

Hello everyone and hope you’re having or have had a wonderful Tuesday. I’m very excited as I’ve got five days off now so am planning lots of reading, some boring adult cleaning the house 😂 getting my hair done and seeing one of my best friends whom I haven’t seen in a year! 🥰 Today I’m showcasing a book I read recently on my kindle for @criminallygoodbookclub - When No One Is Watching by Alyssa Cole. This novel had such an intriguing synopsis, told from the point of view of a black woman and a white man who are neighbours in the same community in Brooklyn. Sydney is desperately trying to keep hold of her mother’s house but the neighbourhood is undergoing an alarming rate of gentrification. The familiar community and neighbours she knows are being forced out and there is some very shady and underhand business going on behind the scenes. The actual “thriller” portions of the novel don’t really materialise until about halfway through which was absolutely fine with me. I was really enjoying Sydney’s story and thought the author did a fantastic job with a unique theme to create an intense and captivating mystery. I don’t want to give away too much as we’ll be discussing this book on Sunday but I have to admit, up until the ending, this was a four star read for me. Then the ending came as if out of the blue and I’m sorry to say that it wasn’t quite what I expected. As a reader, I adore being surprised and ordinarily thrive on anything unexpected. There was just something about this particular ending that didn’t sit right with me unfortunately. It didn’t feel believable as part of the plot and additionally felt completely out of character for our lead male and female. I’m very aware that I might be in the minority with this review and that other readers will think it’s wonderful. However, I just couldn’t suspend my disbelief with this one - it felt like a book of two halves. Such a shame as I was really loving the characters and the plot up until then! Three stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 #bookstagram #booklover #bookworm #bookstagrammer #bookreview #whennooneiswatching #alyssacole #threestarreads #unpopularopinions #cgbookclub https://www.instagram.com/p/CFuw8u2gJbq/?igshid=e48u0f5azx63

Hello everyone! Hope you’re all looking forward to the weekend. Today I’m sharing a book I recently finished on my Kindle, He Started It by Samantha Downing. It’s also the August book club pick for @criminallygoodbookclub so I’m very much looking forward to discussing it over there. This was an intriguing thriller, much like the author’s first book, My Lovely Wife. I love unreliable narrators and He Started It has them in spades. You never know who to trust throughout the story and for me, that’s a good thing - it makes it infinitely less predictable. I think if I were to rate this book, it would be a strong 3.5 stars and I can’t really explain why I haven’t rated it higher. It was an enjoyable, fast paced novel with surprising and shocking moments. I would definitely recommend it to fans of the genre. I’d love to know your thoughts if you’ve read this! Let me know below in the comments. Have a lovely weekend everyone 🤗😘 🌟 🌟 🌟 💫 #bookstagram #booklover #bookworm #bookstagrammer #hestartedit #cgbookclub #samanthadowning https://www.instagram.com/p/CEcEz8YAMmK/?igshid=1toy3o0mmt93c

Hello everyone, hope your week is going well so far. Today I’m sharing a book I’m #currentlyreading for @criminallygoodbookclub ⁣ Saving Ruby King by Catherine Adel West is a novel I’ve been excited for since I first heard about it so I was delighted that it was picked for the July book club read. I’m fifty pages from the end and am thoroughly enjoying every moment.⁣ ⁣ This is an absorbing, page-turning story that follows the murder of Ruby King’s mother in Chicago’s South Side, a case approached by the police as just another case of violence in a black neighbourhood. It covers issues of race, family values, secrets and historic abuse within families masterfully and I’m absolutely gripped. ⁣ ⁣ I can already say quite confidently that this is a four star read for me with the potential to go up to five stars by the time I reach the end. Highly recommended! ⁣ ⁣ #bookstagram #booklover #bookworm #bookstagrammer #cgbookclub #savingrubyking #catherineadelwest #highlyrecommendedreads https://www.instagram.com/p/CDMXczTgGAS/?igshid=1pihtfi1r0qxq
