Book Review: Home Before Dark By Riley Sager

The Book cast a shadow on Maggie Holt's upbringing. Written by Maggie's journalist father when she was very tiny, The Book is a haunting "nonfiction" chronicle of one family's short weeks of terror in a haunted home. It chronicled the weeks that their family spent in Baneberry Hall during the scariest period of their life.

Wonderful! Are you fond of ghosts? Unsettling ambiance? Ghouls? Souls? Untrustworthy individuals? If you're still reading, then obviously you do! A haunting and visually stunning tale with more turns than a bag of pretzels. In case that wasn't enough, he includes one more as a last resort. Riley Sager is, in my opinion, a master at taking a novel's storyline and twisting it, turning it inside out and upside down, only for it to right itself briefly before tricking you in all the right ways again.

I get excited whenever I come across something that can be related to a haunted home because I genuinely enjoy that kind of content. Whatever you want to name them—ghouls, ghosts, whatever—I'm down with it. I can honestly say that this book terrified me, which is tough to achieve, and its creep factor is through the sky. I was a little disappointed in the ending of the novel because, by this point, I was pretty sure I knew it. I was astonished and utterly incorrect.

The chapters that alternated between Maggie in the present and those from her father's novel, House of Horrors, were really great. Maggie and I continued our quest to discover the truth, and I was always pleasantly pleased when I was proven to be mistaken! I'm really happy with how much I like this book.

If you're a thriller lover like myself, this is the book for you.

Hello everyone and happy Friday! Today I want to shout very briefly from the roof tops about a book I recently finished which happened to be my first Riley Sager. I know, I know - I’ll absolutely be remedying that in the future and read the rest of the books that have been released. ⁣ ⁣ Home Before Dark was the October pick for the @criminallygoodbookclub and one I was highly anticipating for the above mentioned reason and that it was the perfect time of year to read a novel with the theme of a haunted house. ⁣ ⁣ This book completely sucked me in and was deliciously eerie and thrilling. I loved the dual time line ensuring the reader was treated to the story of our protagonist Maggie, twenty-five years ago as a small girl and then during the present day, as an adult taking ownership of the house once more. ⁣ ⁣ Riley Sager sets the scene perfectly and pulls off the paranormal aspects wonderfully well. It made me feel uncomfortable, I felt chilled and uneasy, the hairs rose on the back of my neck more than once and I even glanced behind me at one point just to check, you know? 😂⁣ ⁣ If this is a measure of the effect of Sager’s novels on me, I think I’ve hit the ground running! Hey bookfriends! It’s less than a week until Halloween 🎃👻 How’re you planning to spend it? 👹 If there’s a book that deserves to be on the radar for a Halloween read, it’s a book that literally glows in the dark! I read Home Before Dark a few months ago and it’s my second favourite Sager novel. I loved the alternating timelines, the uncertainty of the narrators, the familial tension between Maggie and her father and obviously the eerie plot events. Definitely not one to miss if you like Sager and want to see his take on the haunted house story type! 👻 As for Halloween, I’m hoping (even for a little) I’ll be able to sit with a good book and watch Hocus Pocus to relax 🔮 I finished Kerri Maniscalco’s Kingdom of the Wicked the other evening, and it was SO GOOD! I’m so excited for the rest of the series, but my god am I suffering not having the sequel 😅 Now for a lil personal update... Things are still chaotic and painful at this end; my dad has deteriorated quicker than anyone expected (he’s got terminal cancer) and he’s not able to speak anymore due to his meds. It’s just a really sad and hard time. I’ve not meant to be entirely MIA from Bookstagram, it’s just hard to have the mental space to think up photos, captions and so on, when I’m really drained and quite honestly struggling IRL. I’ve come on here when I can and seen some posts/reviews, and it’s given me a little bit of normality and escapism. I’m not engaging a whole lot atm, which I’m sorry for, but I cannot tell you how grateful I am for your everyday posts because they help me feel a bit more grounded when I get overwhelmed in the sadness.
