Reconstructing Caroline

In Portal canon, Caroline is already a certified narrative haunter, but in this AU she plays an even bigger role; plus, we get to see her through the eyes of other characters. So, I thought it'll be interesting to compile her most prominent* appearances, both as herself and as Gladys.

* — Sadly, I haven't put much thought into Clairvoyance images or figments featuring her yet... Maybe sometime later?

Gladys Calvin and Caroline Caramia:

That's right, they have last names now, like any self-respecting Psychonauts character should. I'm not even kidding, announcing this fact was literally the main goal of this post. If you know what (or, rather, who) Gladys's last name refers to, go get some choccy milk bc that makes you epic in my eyes. If you know how to pronounce Caroline's last name, go get an extra glass, because even I'm not sure about the right pronunciation.

To quickly recap their backstory for posterity: when Cave Johnson died (?) and things went super south for Aperture Paranormal, Agent Caramia was so scared of accidentally revealing the dark secrets of the company, she saw no other choice but to blow up her mind with a lil' bit of help from a certain someone. After that, a new person emerged from the rubble of Caroline's fractured mind — Gladys, the ultimate skeptic. Her goal is to disprove the existence of psychic powers, which she deems to be nothing more than pseudoscience, and close off Aperture Paranormal and/or Psychonauts at large; this agenda, however, doesn't stop her from using these same powers herself.

Rattenkönigin, The Rat Queen:

Finally, some genuine Psychonauts creepiness in a Psychonauts AU. This giant rat that makes all the rules is the final boss of Rattmann's mindscape. Not unlike El Odio, she roams the level, hanging from the sky and using her hands to stride around and catch unsuspecting victims — her main goals, however, are Doug and his faithful friend, Companion Cube.

There's a strategy to fighting her, albeit an involved one. You have to utilise Invisibility, which Doug fortunately bestows upon Chell, to avoid being caught, and Psi-Blast to shoot smaller rats — only when they're down will the main hand drop the head rat and make it vulnerable. And you also want to avoid the Confusion gas explosions these smaller rats emit, because apparently they're just as prone to do that upon defeat as the rats from Thorney Tower.

Lifeline:

Found in Mr. Johnson's mind, this is the first version of Caroline proper that's encountered by Chell and Wheatley. Pretty as a postcard, and just as flat, this lovely assistant may not carry over the intelligence, or exact height, of her real-world progenitor, but that doesn't stop her from staying fiercely loyal to Cave. She even calls him her "noble psychomaster" — now that's an odd nickname. But I do wonder what Cave thinks of her...

the climax of portal 2 is so epic, thanks in no small part to this song. the lightbulb moment when you look up at the sky and see the moon is just so great. hyyyype

So like- this track basically completely powers the climax of Portal 2. Everything seems hopeless, you get that classic Portal 2 menacing electronic music and it all builds up, then you hit that portal to the moon and… it all goes quiet as the music swells dramatically then once the situation sets in, boom! The music comes back at full force, reprising the dramatic electric music from before but now it’s orchestral. We’re not in the facility anymore, we’re in space, this is the epic finale, this is it. Then as it all comes to a peak, Wheatley is launched away into space and the music fades as he disappears into the big black void. Then some bloopy electronic music comes back in as you’re pulled to safety, you’re back in the facility.

my name is ro, I'm 22 years old, from the US. I recently graduated from college with a double major in English Literature and Theatre. I work full time as a board certified optician.

THE LAST LORINEAN; epic fantasy, draft ??. A young woman finds out she is host to a powerful being that the immortal emperor really wants dead. She learns magic, secrets, makes some friends, etc etc. This the OG baby of my writing career, and oh boy is she epic. Haven't touched her since nanowrimo because it's very easy to burn out on her. There's twins, casual queerness, lots of world building, and most especially there is the love I have for this story.

THE DAUGHTER OF DENMARK; historical fantasy, draft two. Hamlet is a woman, Christianity has only just left Denmark, and the politics are even more complicated than before. Does it count as draft two when I never finished the first one? This novel is an adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet with a few key points changed. While I would describe this as historical fantasy, it definitely leans more fantasy than historical...

EAT HER HEART OUT; drama, draft one. An adaptation of the Homeric Hymn to Demeter that doesn't forget about Demeter. Adding to my compendium of Greek adaptations, this is split between Persephone's time in the Underworld, Demeter's time with the mortals in Eleusis, and the Muses narrating the ordeal à la true crime podcasters.

ATLANTIS; epic sci-fantasy, draft one. A post-apocalyptic Earth and the island kingdom of Atlantis are reconnected via portal after thousands of years apart. This story isn't about the reconnection, though—it's about the politics of humans and atlanteans, a civil war between nobles, and the return of gods whose worship is forbidden. It's either draft one or draft ten, depending on if you count the ten million first chapters I've written. I am technically co-writing this with an old friend! We've been roleplaying buddies for almost a decade, and have been building this world and this story for almost as long. I'm turning our back and forth into novels!

I watched The World's End. I'm crying. It was a beautiful thing, truly. When Gary's motives finally unraveled I just started sobbing - empathy do really be like that sometimes.

The casting choices were brilliant: Rosamunde Pike slayed, Pierce Brosnan also joined the battle, and recurring actors were again very much appreciated, together with recurring gags. About the characters, I think I can say that I love every single one of them. Pete's past made me feel a bit sick - I was a victim of bullying too, even though I was lucky that it never got that much physical. Andy and Gary got my heart in a chokehold, they're beyond shipping to me.

Also I need to know if there are any fanfictions set after the finale! It was totally epic, and I was so fucking happy that I started crying even more! I thought back to Simon's own struggles with alcohol and I thought to myself "this is the best ending he could write for a story like this one 'cause it somewhat reflects him."

From a writing standpoint, it really is the best one because it combines the best parts of the other two movies.

Also, fun fact: it's the one with the best italian dub (opinion of a certified italian who only watched the first ten minutes in ita and then switched to english because I needed the full british experience) but on the trilogy blu-ray it says that both italian audio and subtitles are unavailable (meanwhile the other two movies have them) lmao

I don't understand why it's so underrated, honestly. I think if I had to rate the trilogy, this could very easily be interchangeable with Hot Fuzz on the top tier. Shaun is very good too, but I felt some kind of disconnect while watching it, for some reason I didn't get close to the characters as I did with the other movies.

So... yeah. This was, is, and always will be the Cornetto Trilogy. Now I can finally reblog one hundred posts about it without the risk of getting spoiled.

Also, did you notice a pattern for the last names of the main characters? Page, Chamberlain, Knightley, Prince, King? And the names of the pubs being actually relevant to the plot??? It's details like these that enhance everything. The (Nick) Frosting on the cake (I'm so sorry I had to lol). Anyway istg when Wright and Pegg started collaborating the planets aligned or something, because stuff this good is so incredibly rare!

I was accepted into Butler Community College (BCC), which is a historic Black college (established after the Emancipation Proclamation), for their Certified Paralegal course! My classes are online, and they begin in late July 2024.

I happen to live in Daytona Beach, where Bethune Cookman University (BC-U) is located. BC-U and BCC are affiliated. If you ever watch US College level American Football games, BC-U has the most EPIC band!

Ms. Mary Bethune Cookman was a black woman, daughter of slaves, that were eventually emancipated, and she became very involved in education, as well as a national adviser to Franklin D. Roosevelt.

By August 2025, I will be a certified Paralegal in the US!

Augusnippets 2024 Path of Comfort Day 20: Favorite Treat

Titie: Sufganiyot Fandom: Peaky Blinders (post-canon) Characters: Alfie Solomons, Tommy Shelby CW: Brief but lively NSFW, references to antisemitism and fascism Summary: After a couple of false starts, Alfie and Tommy and their messy little family find a suitable home in the New World. One with an actual thriving Jewish community. And sufganiyot. A fluffy snippet and also teaser for an upcoming post-canon fic (possibly one long fic, possibly a series of linked shorts) that I haven't been ambitious enough to fully tackle yet. I've redacted a couple of minor things to avoid any major spoilers. Also here on AO3.

SUFGANIYOT XXXXX is a “no” –  under English rule, but just as unwelcoming to Jews as the Island.  Winston Churchill – concerned, for reasons no-one really understands, about Jewish refugees acting as spies, reporting back to the Axis powers – orders all the non-British male Jewish refugees older than sixteen to be confined to work camps, far out in the woods, under armed guard. XXXXX isn’t much better.  The French are in charge, but they cave easily enough under pressure from Churchill.  The first internment camp has just opened there.  And the place is just as desolate as XXXXX.. XXXXX, though – XXXXX is thriving. And has a centuries-old Jewish community. And a hostel, a refuge for Jews seeing the writing on the wall and running from the growing Nazi movement.  The hostel is nothing luxurious, of course, barebones and crowded.  But it’s safe, free of concertina wire and armed guards and forced labor. Refugees can come and go as they please, visit the baths and the synagogue. Rivka expresses immediate interest – it’s a place where she can put her skills to work, have something to do, be of use helping the tide of incoming Jews, both Sephardic and Ashkenazi, settle.   And Alfie, although glad to be retired and away from London, has sorely missed his synagogue, and the mikvah, and access to actual kosher food. Even more so, the sense of a larger community – something that even as a gangster and a certifiably bad man, and despite his many and indisputable sins, was never denied to him in Camden Town. It was a difficult business – uprooting the whole household, finding a home on a suitable piece of land, settling everyone in and starting over again – but Tommy knows it was the right move.  He knows it the first time he and Alfie set foot into the Beth El Synagogue, and Alfie’s always-tense shoulders relax, like a man settling into a warm bath.  And when the first notes of the cantor’s song peal out, a rich tenor that echoes off the stone walls. Alfie’s fingers tighten briefly on Tommy’s, and the big, tough Jew discreetly rubs a sleeve across his good eye to disguise the sudden shine of unshed tears. And later, at home, when the first taste in years of real sufganiyot, from the bakery on Clancy Street, drags out a guttural moan more carnal than anything Tommy has ever heard Alfie utter, under any circumstances. Alfie hasn’t even managed to take a second bite before Tommy drags him off to their bedroom, determined to figure out what it takes to reproduce that fucking sound, that exact one. The bag of sufganiyot is still in Alfie’s hand, and by the time he realizes what’s going on Tommy’s already got his trousers off and Alfie’s cock halfway down his throat.  In a very short time the bedroom’s a mess of epic proportions – discarded clothes and powdered sugar and come and raspberry jam everywhere.  In the end, the only way to get the last stubborn bit of jam out of Tommy’s hair is with scissors, resulting – temporarily – in an even more ludicrous haircut than usual. ___ sufganiyot: unspeakably delicious little pillows of fried dough filled with jam and dusted with powdered sugar, traditionally served at Hannukah and other times of celebration

SANGRIA is an ex-nursing robot who gained artificial intelligence mysteriously and is now trying to find her place in a post-apocalyptic world. She wants to be YOUR best friend and will give you flowers from her garden if you just ask. Vote for her to spread friendship and support women!

She's a video game protagonist, so I imagine her with customizable features. Her "main" look is a robotic, nonhumanoid head with a unicorn horn attached to a long, rectangular body with long wires. She usually has tank treads so she can navigate her environment easier, coupled with praying-mantis-type "arms" at the front (underneath the wires that connect her head) so she can grasp at things. She is also always covered with stickers and ribbons that she collects from her friends.

Welcome to the Octaviaverse!

This is the side blog for @lyraoctavia and I will be posting everything relating to my writing, artwork, music, games, etc here from now on. I thought it would be better to split the two to keep things more focused on the ridiculously expansive interconnected universe I’ve created over my many years as a human being, featuring literally dozens of ideas because I am a slave to my own creativity and my work is never finished. Sound good? Of course it does!

What kind of stuff do I do?

Writing: I like to write stories, usually fantasy, with epic, sprawling worlds, intricate magic, sarcastic and often completely ridiculous humour, identifiable characters with a ton of emotional development and campy ass villains who will entertain you so much that you’ll want to grind them into a fine paste with a large boot. However, I wouldn’t be adverse to also writing some slice of life stuff too. I am a certified Alice Oseman fangirl after all. I tend to not shy away from commenting on certain serious issues (e.g. abuse, death, self harm, attempted suicide) as well, so a lot of my works contain trigger warnings. However, I don’t enjoy writing explicit sexual content or stuff with a ton of blood and gore so don’t expect any of that.

Games: I am currently a game design student so most if not all of my game ideas are just that. Ideas. Ones that I will undoubtedly be crafting into the incredible experiences I know they have the ability to be. Most of my ideas are for platformers or RPGs with very little in-between and will all have, hopefully, perfect blends of story and gameplay. I personally hate when a story based game is bogged down by too many cutscenes, especially if the gameplay isn’t really that interesting so I’ll always try and strike a balance or find a workaround. My games all have amazing stories to tell but a story ain’t all a game is. Might as well make em fun first, right?

Music: I got a little less to say about this one. Most of my music writing is for my games that don’t exist yet, so I literally have hundreds of tracks just kinda sitting around waiting for me to use them. Sometimes I make other music but that’s rare. Most I’ve got for now are a couple remixes and the score concepts I’ve made for an animated series of Into the Phantasm (please gods let this happen, it would slap so dang hard).

Art: I draw cartoon characters and that’s about it. I am not a professional artist by any means, but my silly little guys can’t just stay sitting in my head forever, sometimes I gotta put ‘em on a page, even if I ain’t some modern Picasso.

To the anon who made the anti-ship ask, I agree with you on some level.. but also don't?

Now, I’ll give you credit. I do personally enjoy most wlw stuff from the osc. So I might have some baises here. I do get where you're coming from when it comes to shipping.

But at the same time, I think the reason you don't see that many anti shippers in the tumblr/twt community is because most antishippers in the osc (Who doesn't actually even use that title) are 10 year old boys on some big osc youtubers community tag.

And a lot of oscyt who do fall under the line of anti shippers are just very immature individual who are stuck in the echochamber known as the community tab of youtube who would most likely be as immature if they were shippers) but that still doesn't help out in the image

Basically most anti shippers in the osc don't actively want to critique and rant on ships like you do, most osc anti shippers don't really know how to even analyze the writing (Ex. "team that loses = bad writing")

TLDR: Anti-ship discoursein the osc, (FROM WHAT I KNOW) is very very stupid and usually very very petty

I do agree with you the more shippy sides of the osc are very allergic to non-ship dynamics, but

Look, I've been in the same situation as you, so many characters I like get stripped down to some basic garbage personality, tha lacks the nuance they have in canon. And then it’s all I see of them, I only see people portray them that one way and I can’t escape it. I feel it’s also shoved down my face.

But now, and this is where you might lose me, and where my take might become ass.

IF you want anti-ship osc content you need to make it yourself, even with all the haters.

I wanted more content that noticed the characters actual personality, so I started posting analises, I wanted to find people who shared my takes so I started looking around for people(THIS was actually way easier due to me making content, since those people KNEW my takes)

I'm sorry to say it, but people who like shipping all the characters together won't suddenly stop posting that content or posting more platonic content of osc characters because you don't like ships. Whilst it sucks that you feel like you have a place in the osc, a lot of the people came here wanting to ship stuff, a lot of people enjoy doing that just as much as you enjoy antishipping

BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY

If you want more platonic osc content, if you want MORE anti ship content you'll need to make it yourself, if you want to stop having ship content down your tags then block as many ships you know of. (Again I'll give you credit this ain't fool proof), Your confession is true I do agree with it. I know you might feel forced to ship things, but I’m telling you right now as a person who's been in a lot of /fandoms that are big on shipping, no one is forcing you. And I think you understand that. But forcing yourself to like shipping isn't good. But then again I can't really blame you (god this is way to long)

BUT AT THE SAME TIME, If you want to have a space for platonic osc dynamics THEN YOU CAN’T EXPECT PEOPLE WILL MAGICALLY KNOW YOU WANT THAT IF YOU DON’T TELL THEM. I’m sorry to say this (because I’ve done this before) But especially on the internet people don’t know what you want.

And looking at the response your ask got, THERE IS A AUDIENCE FOR IT. Even if it isn’t big, people do want to see that!
