transitioning feels like the "navigating the american healthcare system" song
but also the legal system
#we go to the PCP and get a referral and call the doctor and realize we need a letter so we go to another doctor and get a letter and then-#realize that letter isn't official so we go back to the doctor and get a referral and get a letter from the other doctor and call up the#surgeon and realize our original referral expired and go back to the doctor and get another referral and call up the surgeon and get-#for next year then wait till next year and go to the surgeon and get sent to insurance and wait on insurance and come back to make an-#appointment and go to the doctor to get our surgery- then come back to the doctor week after week for a stupid appointment#and we go to get finger prints and wait for a background check#and we go to the county clerk and file a petition and wait for the petition and go to SSA to get a new card then go to the DMV to get a new-#license then go to the bank to change all my cards then mail my ID's to change my birth certificate then email my school to get a new ID and#FELLERS I THINK IM LOST

man oh man i have so many thoughts about how insistently (and i think kind of blindly/uncritically) my university pushes us to frame absolutely every type of learning experience we offer to students in the language of "career readiness" and "career-connected learning" and "professional development." i totally get that we have a large first-gen student population who are making a big investment of time & money in a college degree and who want to be sure that doing so will grant them access to greater socioeconomic mobility. and i DO think it is important for us to think about like, ok, long-term, what comes after these experiences or after this four years in college, and what can we be doing to set students up for success as they transition out of college and into the rest of their lives. but like. idk man. i find it really bleak sometimes. just this relentless messaging that the only thing that matters in your adult life is how competitive you are on the job market. and i also think it pushes us to just like, kind of warp or distort the things we are offering students to make them fit under that rubric, or that particular framework for valuing things? like if we want to convince a student to study abroad we can't be like, living abroad is one of the most amazing things you can do. it's so fun/scary/exhilarating/awesome and it will expand your horizons in ways you can't even anticipate and it will expose you to different ways of seeing the world and you will get to interact with people whose perspectives have been shaped by totally different cultures & contexts and it will help you become more independent and more confident in your ability to handle unfamiliar situations and it will give you stories you will remember all your life and you will build strong friendships with the people you meet and you will take cool pictures or buy little knickknacks that remind you of those experiences in your daily life forever and it will motivate you to travel more and when/if you have kids of your own you will probably make it a priority to travel with them if you can or to encourage them to study abroad when they're older because you know how amazing that experience is and you want them to have access to those kinds of life-changing opportunities. like instead of saying any of that we have to say oh this will develop your skills in time management and project management and professional communication with your supervisors and it will give you something impressive to talk about on your resume or in job interviews and blah blah blah. or even if you use a more capacious definition of career readiness that focuses more on habits of mind (like, in the workplace you will sometimes have to navigate complex situations where expectations are not fully clear! you will also likely have this experience living abroad!), it's still just like... idk man... i find it so reductive lol like yeah sure but "get a skill that applies to your job as a project manager or an IT professional or whatever" just feels so much... Less... than the more humanistic appeal to like, this will enrich your life in so many ways, and you will, through these experiences, just become an all-around more emotionally mature, confident, and interesting human being who has engaged in an experience that challenged you and helped you grow. but then i am all in on the humanities and humanism in general so maybe i am biased here and someone who wants to be a software engineer or whatever would be wholly unmoved by that kind of appeal. idk. anyway. it looks like our team is going to be subsumed into our career center in the next year or two so like. what can you really do except to inwardly say "wow i kinda hate this"
#i ALSO have feelings about how like#i went to a fancy expensive college with a whole lot of rich kids#and nobody ever once talked to me about career readiness lol. like i don't even know if i was aware we had a career center of any kind#i got to spend four years really thinking about like#what problems fascinated me and what writers did i love & hate and what ideas did i want to explore in writing#and now i work at a demographically very different institution#and even though we are not a vocational school so much of what we push at them is like#so vocational or so like#oh we all know you're not here to think about big ideas. you're here to get Credentials that document your Professional Skills#so you can enter the Workforce#i mean the faculty i don't think are like that. but SO much of the student success/extracurricular programming stuff is like#really focused on that#and maybe it was like... my college was like y'all are gonna be fine you've got money and access to this alumni network#and access to our brand#you can do whatever you want and you're going to be golden in life#whereas here's like ok you are going to have to work a lot harder to make your way in this world#so idk. i can understand it!!! i just also find it yucky. like the idea that#for some kids college gets to be about Finding Yourself and Having Big Ideas#and for some kids college is like a professional certification program to help you get an entry-level professional position#so that you can have health insurance. maybe for the first time

You think they are already married?
no dude we would know. that's public record in the UK and people still monitor it.
#jam replies#anon#i don't think that rules out the idea of them considering themselves husbands even if it's not on paper?#there's a lot of people in the world who can't/don't have a marriage that they get legally recognized#but it doesn't lessen the significance.#(due to lack of marriage equality for disabled people#due to polyamory#personal choice. etc)#my husband and i considered ourselves married for years before we got married on paper but we would've lost insurance coverage if we'd made#it legal before we did. we straight up waited until we aged out of our parents' insurance. & then until we did our legal name changes so ou#marriage certificate could be right. we got legally married as soon as we aged out so that we could have legal protections once we#moved thousands of miles from any blood family in case there was an emergency#idk like. sorry to ramble on personal reasons but i'm trying to make the point that like#making a marriage legal is a huge tactical consideration.#and it's something i think dan and phil do want someday but there's no way for it to have already happened

As an American actor, (though admittedly I only do community theatre for free; a far cry from being a professional film actor) it kind of bothers me that nobody ELSE seems bothered by how many British actors we bring in to play American characters in shows and movies.
Like, i don't have an issue with any of these actors individually, and some of them i even specifically like! But the fact is that there are way more people in the US than the UK, which would logically imply that there are way more actors here, too. of the many show business-adjacent people I've discussed it with, I've only gotten two somewhat-plausible explanations for why we are importing fake Americans.
The first is that maybe casting in the US is more based on appearance/branding/networking/nepotism, whereas in the UK it's more based on actual ability, making it easier to find capable performers. I have no idea how one would even go about investigating this claim, tbh.
The second is that maybe you can pay European actors less?? I'm gonna be real, I don't really get how that would work. Probably the unions would start to be involved?? (I know very little about actors' unions, partly bc there's very little paying work for actors in my town.) But it also seems like the most believable reason this keeps happening so consistently?
(Also my brain is just the reverse of that trope where a kid can't understand math until it's put in terms of money. I'm pretty good with math until it becomes "finances", and then I'm lost.)
And this is just an idea I came up with on my own, but since it seems like there's more support for the arts in general in the EU, maybe it's easier to find good actors there, because actors are struggling less, on the whole?
Many people I've discussed it with have jokingly said, "maybe they're just better actors lol", which i know isn't meant to be taken seriously, but still kind of frustrates me, because acting isn't really that hard!! It's not that difficult to find people who can act passably!
I've been involved in community theatre for, like, seven years? In a city with very little support for the performing arts, and theaters that occasionally operate at a loss. And I've seen a lot of REALLY good acting. And I don't even go to that many shows! Like, stop saying me and my friends can't act! 😠 (I've seen some not-so-great acting, too, don't worry! I think I'm appropriately critical.)
Anyway, sometimes I fantasize about reverse-colonizing Europe, and moving over there to make my career as a professional actor.
#i promise i know the difference between the EU and the UK#i just said both cause i meant both#acting#theatre#theater#my feelings#by elise#most of the time i think leaving my city seems terrifying and like way too much work! much less leaving the country!!#not to mention that I'm currently in a training program for what i think is a pretty us-specific career certification?#not that medical assistant skills aren't transferable. but i think there's a lot that would vary from country to country#a LOT of what I'm learning rn is based on health insurance and federal regulations and whatnot

okay someone explain it to me like im 5 how someone who has never studied or practiced medicine, and literally has no experience with medicine, can decide they know better for even half a second than someone with a literal PhD
everyone who works in insurance promptly needs to die. you didn't go to school. you are not a nurse or doctor. you don't know SHIT and you NEED to kys NOW
#like Idek how that shits legal tbh what's the point of forcing med workers to go to school#and get certifications or whatever#if these insurance bimbos can just waltz along and say oh teehee no actually fuck you and your years of studying you're wrong#and now we're going to fuck people over and cause them to suffer and die for profit#PLEASE FUCKING PUBLICLY KILL YOURSELVES NOW#YOU SERIOUSLY 1000000% deserve to suffer#text

I really hate having to depend on people to get very very important things done
#oh the joys of being disabled and not being able to do thing or having to constantly get help with things#literally have been asking my landlord MONTHS gor paperwork i need from him#and ive been trying to get other paperwork and documents from people that i otherwise should have had#but i was in the hospital and very sick so i dont have these documents and so now im trying to get them but#its just so annoying and im suffering because its affecting my health and people just dont care and im so frustrated#and i also still am not able to drive and i dont have money to get the bus or anything and Aahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh#and im still trying to get like my frivken birth certificate from my mother because she had all this stuff because i was sick#and again in the hospital and when i finally got out and tried to get a grip on all my legal medical stuff#i find out that she just let it all go to waste and she literally told me that she was just waiting for me to get out#so that i can handle it myself when jsncjsncjsjcnccn#THATS WHAT SHE LITERALLY WAS THERE FOR SHE HAD ALL MEDICAL RIGHTS BY ME AND SHE DIDN'T DO IT#and gosh... i just really hope i still qualify for disability because i cant work ive tried to do it and#i literally worked a 9-5 day and the next three days after that i was running a fever and throwing up#i thought it was a one time thing so i tried again and the same thing happened#and i keep fricken trying and it keeps happening and its frustrating my body wont tolerate working#and im stressed because the person coming into presidency doesn't like disabled people and i feel like im just not gonna qualify#i just hope i qualify for the insurance part at least thats what i really really need because yeah just yeah
