Something I miss from earlier eras of the creative side of the internet was things just being unabashedly low-budget. Just all unashamedly amateur, unprofessional, ‘I don’t own a good camera but I have a story to tell you’, ‘I can’t afford a good mic but I have a song to sing for you,’ ‘I don’t have any kind of background in editing or lighting and I only just picked up this guitar last Tuesday but here’s an entire musical me and my friends wrote about our favourite book, we filmed it on a potato and put it up on YouTube in ten minute segments because we thought it was pretty funny.’
#everything felt so much less like Content then#and as someone who wants to share creative stuff online#it’s now incredibly daunting thinking about doing that bc#especially as a disabled person who can’t work full time#it feels almost impossible to extricate art from being Content#like there’s this immense pressure to produce things that could pass as professionally produced by a team of educated people#and to make smart decisions so that somehow eventually you can profit off your art#and instead of it being a ‘hey look at my silly little song’ it becomes#competing in an over saturated market already dominated by the nepotism afforded by wealth and connections#and it feels like it would very difficult not to measure my personal satisfaction with how a certain piece of art turned out#by how much attention it got online#even though I genuinely have zero desire to be famous and it sounds like a complete nightmare#anyway I’m gonna have ice cream for dinner how about you guys#hmp42

the way everyone has a dislike in their profile that actually says something integral about their character. lu guang doesn't like plans getting messed up, cheng xiaoshi dislikes loneliness, xia fei with owing favors, vein with lying...
and then you have liu xiao, who dislikes... cilantro. and fish mint.
(shakes fist) (putting him in a glass jar and shaking vigorously) learn to be vulnerable!! tell me something about yourself!! I guess him liking movies lines up with the theater metaphors, and there's him liking chess, but that. doesn't count methinks
#mine musings#liveblogging link click#link click#okay the metaphor thing works out a little bit in that. it's on brand#70% of what we know about liu xiao are implicitly gained from other characters#e.g. how xf and ltc relate to him. how the liu family talk about him. how he thematically juxtaposes other characters like lg and cxs#the 30% are the things we know explicitly from him e.g. he's a rich kid with a sports car. he can hear heartbeats#he wants to merge the parallel lines or whatever#the rest are inferences like. oh okay no parallel lines? he doesn't like uncertainties i guess#the way he talks about friendship with xf and ltc? he values a transactional view of relationships#(maybe because transactions imply a certain level of certainty?)#he's the current favored child of the liu family but he wasn't before#he's a “manipulator” but really that's mostly from marketing stuff and implications from canon#like. we know a lot about him but at the same time we don't#the way we just know his uncertainty -> certainty thing contrasts with lg's certainty -> uncertainty thing#we know his heartbeat hearing implies he knows everyone's level of sincerity and both xf and cxs exist as foils to that#the hunter thing with ltc. why does he believe that?#lots of “bringing the darkness” lines in three of his songs for some reason#so like. i can't say that the show hasn't told us anything. they have but in circular ways#we don't know much about him from him directly but we do. know stuff. kinda. do you get me#all i want from YE6 is veinxiao friendship being shown so i can have new dimensions on how lx views friendship#and maybe like. a hint at what his motivations are. like why is he Like That#<- again funnier if he's just Like That from the womb. even if the liu family isn't fucked up he's still Like That#but that's not this show's style so probably not#lx notes#like the INSISTENCE of writing lx as a point of comparison or through other people's perspectives and very rarely from his own#is fascinating to me

*sigh* thoughts on Nintendo's botw/totk timeline shenanigans and tomfoolery?
tbh. my maybe-unpopular opinion is that the timeline is only important when a game's place on the timeline seriously informs the way their narrative progresses. the problem is that before botw we almost NEVER got games where it didn't matter. it matters for skyward sword because it's the beginning, and it matters for tp/ww/alttp (and their respective sequels) because the choices the hero of time makes explicitly inform the narrative of those games in one way or another. it matters which timeline we're in for those games because these cycles we're seeing are close enough to oot's cycle that they're still feeling the effects of his choices. botw, however, takes place at minimum 10 thousand years after oot, so its place on the timeline actually functionally means nothing. botw is completely divorced from the hero of time & his story, so what he does is a nonissue in the context of botw link and zelda's story. thus, which timeline botw happens in is a nonissue. honestly I kind of liked the idea that it happened in all of them. i think there's a cool idea of inevitability that can be played with there. but the point is that the timeline exists to enhance and fill in the lore of games that need it, and botw/totk don't really need it because the devs finally realized they could make a game without the hero of time in it.
#i really do have a love-hate relationship with this timeline#because it's FASCINATING lore. genuinely. and i think it carries over the themes of certain games REALLY well#but i also think it's indicative of a trend in loz's writing that has REALLY annoyed me for a long time#which is this intense need to cling to oot#and on a certain level i get it. that was your most successful game probably ever. and it was an AMAZING game.#and i think there's definitely some corporate profit maximization tied up in this too--oot was an insane commercial success therefore you'r#not allowed to make new games we need you to just remake oot forever and ever#and that really annoys me because it makes certain games feel disjointed at best and barely-coherent at worst.#i think the best zelda games on the market are the ones where the devs were allowed to really push what they were working with#oot. majora. botw. hell i'd even put minish cap in there#these are games that don't quite follow what was the standard zelda gameplay at their time of release. they were experimental in some way#whether that be with graphics or puzzle mechanics or open-world or the gameplay premise in its entirety. there's something NEW there#and because the devs of those games were given that level of freedom the gameplay really enforces the narrative. everything feels complete#and designed to work together. as opposed to gameplay that feels disjointed or fights against story beats. you know??#so I think that the willingness to allow botw and totk to exist independently from the timeline is good at the very least from a developmen#standpoint because it implies a willingness to. stop making shitty oot remakes and let developers do something interesting.#and yes i do very much fear that the next 20 years of zelda will be shitty BOTW remakes now#in which botw link appears and undergoes the most insane character assassination youve ever seen in your life#but im trying to be optimistic here. if botw/totk can exist outside the timeline then we may no longer be stuck in the remake death loop#and i'm taking eow as a good sign (so far) that we're out of the death loop!! because that game looks NOTHING like botw or oot.#fingers crossed!!#anyway sorry for the game dev rant but tldr timeline good except when it's bad#asks#zelda analysis

The conclusion of the Noroshi arc has finally arrived! Way to go Bofurin and allies 🥹🙌!!
Spoilers for Wind Breaker Chapters 157 and Chapter 158 ahead! (with additional doodles as an apology for not posting last time, exams was kicking my ass i fear)
Crazy how this whole arc happened in around or in less than 12 hours and I was so ready for it to end on 157 but I should’ve know Takiishi was too stubborn to be knocked out so easily.
GAHHH I have so much to say about the symbolisms in these two chapters.
So first of all, the “Umemiya’s will to change Furin is akin to forging metal” analogy from Endo (Chapter 153) comes back in 157, but now it’s being used in the context of Takiishi. The metal (Takiishi) is finally hot enough to be malleable for potential change and its evident with his new found interest in the rain. Throughout most of Takiishi’s life, he has remained static. He gets what he wants, when he wants and how he wants it. If he doesn’t like it, he gets rid of it. There had been little else that has ever made a significant impact or changes in his life, then he meets Endo and Umemiya—
—both becoming the faces of his perception on the types of people that exist in his life. Then, Umemiya takes it a step further and becomes the catalyst to a (much needed) change in perspective for Takiishi. In my opinion, Takiishi liking the rain can be symbolic of two things:
(1) the rain or more specifically water in Buddhism symbolizes purity, clarity and calmness. Think back to how hellish and messy Takiishi’s mindscape was like in Chapter 153, it had been full of all his interests (notice the fireworks in the bkgd? he said he likes fireworks in 158) and how he perceives things from the outside world. Takiishi starting to like rain means he’s introducing rain to his mindscape, and I can only assume it helps clean up that horder’s wet dream of a place. That is to say, he’s allowing himself to be cleaned from the impurities and bring serenity into his life.
and (2) it represents Takiishi reaching Nirvana (or something similar to it). Now, to most people this probably came out my ass but hear me out: nirvana literally means “to blow out (a light/fire)” or in other words “to extinguish” and as a concept in Buddhism, its a state in which one extinguishes the three posions (i.e. greed, hatred and ignorance) from their life and reaches enlightenment. AND THE TITLE OF CHAPTER 158 IS “The Great Fires of Extinction*”. *smacks my scrub-down board* DO YOU SEE THE CONNECTION RN? TELL ME IM NOT CRAZY FOR THINKING THIS. What I’m getting at is Umemiya was able to help in quelling the poisonous flames of Takiishi’s heart and guided him to self-betterment JUST LIKE THE DUTIES OF FUDO MYO-O AND EXACTLY LIKE HOW BUDDHA CONVERTED THE EIGHT LEGIONS TO BUDDHISM. (Sorry for the capslock im just *gestures wildly* excited)
*note: my delulu brain made the connection between extinction and extinguish because they both refer to the removal of something. (update: etymologically, they both orginated from the same latin word extinguere / lit. destroy or put out)
By the end of this arc, Takiishi has changed significantly and, as much as I hate to say this, but I agree with Endo on this being a beautiful fight. It had been a long time coming for both parties but it had been a necessary conversation to kickstart a new beginning for Takiishi like a rebirth of sorts (+ it allowed Endo and Sakura to gain perspective on people, their complexities and for the latter the responsibilities of being top dog). Wish it didn’t have to end in the rooftop and the town becoming a mess, but oh well, we can’t have everything.
I love love LOVE how Nii-sensei writes Umemiya. His role as a guide and protector to both his people and his enemies is so fucking beautiful and poetic, my words won’t do it justice. In my heart, I see it as him stepping up to be the big brother figure he was always meant to be—had the accident not happened, he would’ve been the best one in the world.
“There’s nothing more fascinating than people.” AGREED KING, SPEAK YOUR TRUTH. I
NOW FOR MY SILLY YAPPING!
UmeEndo conversation really shines in 158 and I’m living for it. I get you UmeEndo shippers, I get you. Endo’s so fucking weirded out by Ume’s optimism and genuineness, I genuinely love how uncomfortable he gets. I’m framing the faces he made in this chapter. Oh how the turns have tabled, you absolute goof.
I already said this once to a friend but I’ll only say it one more time, but I’m genuinely happy for Endo. He has stuck onto Takiishi like a leech without any expectation for the latter’s reciprocation and it was kind of pitiful watching him dance around Takiishi like an annoying chihuahua. Now that Takiishi has officially and verbally acknowledged him, it was heart warming…I guess. I'll let him ride this high with a follow up sketch I'll share here later.

Despite no sunrise panel, I think it was appropriate for this arc to end in a downpour. It’s fitting like a forest fire dying down from the rain to replenish the earth and grow anew with all the nutrients from the ash remains of the forest (shoutout to Ales for her EndoChikaUme being Fuel, Fire and Ash post, im kissing your brain rn). Overall, very happy with the conclusion of the Noroshi arc and I’m happily dancing to Happy Xmas (War is Over) by the Plastic Ono. All the love to Nii-sensei and everyone in the official English translation staff for literally the best arc so far in the manga. And thanks for reading ‘til the end of this post. ^^

I think being a tiny borrower size vampire would be So Good. Like in some media vampires can become giant human-sized bats so what if they can also do the reverse (tiny bat-sized human.) Itty bitty bitey person… you’d never have to worry about hurting someone when you drink their blood bcuz your so small!! They’d probably barely even be able to feel your fangs. You could use a mint tin as a coffin… Imagine…..
#vampire#vampires#vampirecore#vampire tag#vampirekin#vampire kin#otherkin#sfw g/t#i have a tiny resin coffin I bought at a craft market and I love to imagine being tiny and sleeping in it#it’s cute it’s sparkly and it has a flower on it#also simultaneously preying on a human while also being incredibly vulnerable because their a Giant compared to you#scratches a certain itch in me#g/t

"In some such families, brothers practiced what is known as temporary marriages, where several brothers would marry a single wife, who would bear heirs to all of them in turn. While the Roman ideology of the univira, a woman's devotion to one husband, seems at odds with the practice of temporary marriage, the way Crassus stepped into his brother's marriage suggests that his family may have opted to allow only two sons to marry in order to secure the family's future. When his brother died, Crassus took the opportunity to move from uncle to husband, a move that may have served his own interests as well as fraternal pietas."
[The brothers of Romulus: fraternal Pietas in Roman law, literature, and society by Bannon, Cynthia Jordan]
@p-clodius-pulcher showed me this crazy quote, wherein "his family may have opted to allow only two sons to marry" made me go "so you are saying in a later era, Crassus would be a priest".
OHHHH THIS IS DELICIOUS. every discussion revolving around Crassus' marriage to his sister-in-law is so so fun. we have archaic traditions & obligations, there's the matter of keeping the dowry in the family (which in turn lends to a fun exploration of the economy at the time, wrt to crassus' father's policy making), & combined together, there's something to be said for the reasoning that the brother-sister marriage records of roman egypt may have had more to do with keeping property in the family.
but now with fraternal pietas? HELLO!! new things to think about. I'm going to unpack this with a magnifying glass.
#i need. to read this book#remember fellas! its not incest if you marry your sister in law as long as your brother/her husband is dead!#if you have an affair while he's alive and they divorce and you marry her. that's incest! and your father in law will be waiting#for the opportunity to invade your kingdom and kick over your throne for the insult <3 (this is referencing john the baptist and herod)#this does not apply in the 18th-19th centuries tho. if your sister dies and you marry your brother in law. well. the scandal!#unless you're of a certain social class and then you can be persuaded to reconsider.#anyway. ANYWAY. fraternal pietas!!!!!! this is also. the sforzas to me. ascanio @ ludovico after the death of galeazzo#ask tag#ANYWAY. crassus as a priest is making me wheeze. im imagining some kind of. 14th/15th century type of setting#an absolutely unholy terror. he would be such a scary player in the marriage matchmaking market. dynastic aspirations of#people he disliked would be in shambles. ascanio sforza levels Surprise! I Raised An Army! type of machinations

i genuinely dont get how so many people are uncritically excited for The Movie and have no issue with anything going on here i feel like im losing my mind a little bit . the trailers did not look good to me at all is everyone excited about it posting from an alternate dimension or something what are people seeing in this movie that im not .
#and i say this as someone whos standards are usually not that high and can have fun with most sonic media and liked the first 2 movies......#all i can feel is disappointment at how bad a job theyre doing at adapting sa2 and the disservice to certain characters/concepts#(obviously thats just based on the trailers i havent seen the movie and refuse to spend money on it so i cant give afull judgement#but the trailers certainly dont give a very good impression of the movie to me)#and before anyone says that its not an sa2 movie.theyre taking a lot of plot points and characters from sa2#and taking a lot of stuff from sa2 and using it in the marketing and such#they cant do all that and then go ''um actually its not an sa2 movie youre crazy for expecting an sa2 movie LOL''#i also wasnt expecting an exact recreation of sa2 either i would have bene fine with changes#but stuff like having gerald be alive and take rouge's spot in the dark story trio and making him a more comedic character#is ridiculous and feels inherently disrespectful to the source material#and thats not even getting into how it feels like im always hearing about some new awful thing#that paramount or one of the actors did which just makes me not wanna give them my money or time even more#sighhh i honestly just want this all to be over alerady and for the hype to die down so ican stop hearing about the movie#but i know its going to make one billion dollars and theyre just going to make more movies after this. hell on earth .

ok i still haven't seen the video du jour so i'm not casting aspersions on it, specifically, but i must say i am baffled by seeing responses to it on here that seem to be written under the presumption that newspaper journalism is somehow immune to the economic forces that cause digital creators to churn out endless streams of low-effort, plagiarised content. have we not all had the experience of trying to find information about an event and clicking on a few different news stories from 'respectable' outlets, only to discover they're all using the same three quotes and just paraphrasing the copy around it, and then clicking around more and determining that those three quotes all turn out to have been sourced from a local paper that broke the story last week but has a circulation of approximately ten people and was mostly ignored, and meanwhile critical details of the situation have now been distorted or omitted in a game of lazy newsprint telephone?
this is more of what i mean when i say that plagiarism is not a bug of capitalist knowledge production and circulation; it's a feature. newspapers and academic articles and youtube video essays are all products and they all exist to sell themselves. individual writers and journalists and editors may be more or less invested, personally, in what they're making, but regardless they are all subject to the same forces incentivising more content and shittier source attribution: it's good for your bottom line if you can continually present yourself as some brilliant thinker who is coming up with wholly original ideas and bestowing them upon the masses. it is much less beneficial to you, economically, to direct people openly and honestly to others' work by crediting them and presenting your own output as part of a larger collaborative social endeavour.
this sort of knowledge production is therefore prone to plagiarism as an expression of the contradiction between the idealist pretense to knowledge circulation as a beneficent activity of social enlightenment, and the material reality of knowledge circulation as a capitalist activity both productive of and dependent on structures of exploitation and inequality. it's not a problem that's unique to individual bad actors, or to any specific medium or professional credential or lack thereof. let's be serious
#najia said much the same the other day about academia! i just like dk why there is so much energy put into trying to present certain#media forms as uniquely subject to market forces. or well i do know why but lol

how do you do fellow kids
#I hate when corporations try to Appeal to Me#especially bc there are people this DOES appeal to lmao#like yes that's what they want is ur attention on the cringey content mill it's free marketing#I'm also actually certain this is *not* referencing the 20th anniversary hot tub thing bc that would be too self aware for EA to accomplish#hot tubs are one of the main recognizable Sims objects so I'm pretty sure it's a coincidence#either way though a company worth a million billion dollars making fun of itself for not producing quality content#with no current proof that they can do anything besides fail to produce quality content#it'd still be embarrassing lol

On a higher level I agree with this but I fundamentally disagree with this being applied to Arcane (what this post was inspired by) because the animation of Arcane is so handmade and detail heavy that you fundamentally cannot have 15-20 episodes. Like it cannot happen because it takes a long time and a lot of skilled people to make animation like that and it’s near impossible to get the time or money to do that length.
A lot have people talked about how the finale was cut down from its original hour and a half long script but less have talked about why — its because (from what I remember) it was too long to animate. The budget for arcane was 250 million dollars. That’s actually pretty efficient for big budget animation when you look at cost per minute, as some people have pointed out. But that’s still overall larger than most big budget animated films (both spiderverses were 100 million, largest Pixar films are around 200 million). 15-20 episodes per season for Arcane would have likely been something like 400-500 million dollars. That’s obscene amounts of money for any project. The highest budget film ever made from what I can tell (Star Wars The Force Awakens) was 447 million. 20 episodes would be like 555 million!
There’s some oversimplification here that I’m doing because obviously 18 episodes is still a lot more than one movie and it’s actually really impressive what they’ve been able to accomplish with the money they have. BUT this still doesn’t even factor in the time and labor took to make this, and the even more time and labor it would take to make a 15-20 ep arcane.
From what I can tell, writers knew how many episodes there were per season going in (though there’s maybe a rumor that they thought for a second that there were 5 seasons? Idk). I think it is more productive to critique writers on what they chose to write for and how they wrote season 2 given this 9 ep limit. You need to scope properly for any project, and I think fundamentally writers either did not scope properly or did not write for the scope they set.
#there’s other factors here probably such as#my guess is LOL wanted certain stuff to happen for marketing purposes#and also they’re trying to set up their new shows#my guess is. that maybe the black rose arc was to make mel a LOL character#and it’s frustrating to see your character get sacrificed to the corporate gods like this BUT ALSO#not to be like I’m different but I would have written the black rose arc better. Rip to Arcane writers but I’m different#(not actually lol but I can think of much better ways to write the black rose arc lmao)#tara talks#arcane#media

Anyone else feel like The Edge Of Sleep is gonna maybe flop?
Like, not in a ‘oh it won’t be good’ way. I mean it’s been years since the audio of it came out, and I don’t remember seeing any trailers, any teasers it’s just “Let’s just announce it” after so long of silence and probably little hype. If it took years it’d be fine as long as there was teasers and confirmations and I’m not the most ingrained to the Markiplier sphere but I liked the story and I’ve heard very little.
They won’t even say what platform it is, only it’s dropping 17 days from now. It’s gonna reach top five at least but it’s marketing is heavily hinging on one person rather than a cast of characters and people going out and promoting it. With Iron Lung that’s fine, Mark is the producer, director and star making it for himself and it’s something that has a trailer and has a hype. TEOS just doesn’t have that. The only grace is that it did get announced in 2021 which was still pandemic times which probably slowed things down.
I hope a Trailer drops soon at the very least to showcase the show and say where it’s officially streaming at. Prime, Disney, Hulu, Peacock, Paramount, Netflix, Crunchyroll, I don’t know all the streaming platforms I just hope it’s one I have.
#the edge of sleep#TEOS#markiplier#I probably sound negative and I won’t deny that#I’m just saddened cause usually things with little marketing flop#I’m 80 percent certain it’ll be good
