Cereal and Coffee
His wife is an odd one, but, then, that’s why he married her. So she chose a strange name for their daughter, reacts in unpredictable ways to animals, has a fascination with new plants sometimes bordering on the absurd. He’d known that when he found her in the shop, staring at a handful of change like it was lost treasure she’d dug up with her own two hands. The look of unbridled joy was worth any number of explanations.
This, at least, is simple to explain. Every married man at his office has had the same problem, and some of unmarried men have their mothers and sisters to comfort over it, too. The television is a wonderful invention, Jonathan knows, so full of potential, and it’s comforting to gather his family around it. But still. The way they target people’s sense of worth – mothers’ sense of worth – is something he hopes will be done away with soon. As if every morning has to be feast after feast, just to raise a child. In this confusion, Amandine isn’t alone at all.
Her sense of style is unique to her, the flowing lines that must come from generations back in her family’s sewing patterns. The way she decorates their home – he worried, when she first settled in, what other people would think, but it’s so cozy and homey for the three of them – causes consternation in the neighborhood women when they come over for tea. He loves her in a way he can never explain, can hardly describe without laughter, when she talks to herself in the garden, or sings back what the stars are shouting to her.
This isn’t that, though. This isn’t her sometimes letting her grip on reality slip by accident, or unveiling it on purpose to share fantastical visions with their daughter. It isn’t even her distress and befuddlement at the most everyday of mundane things. This is a worry it would be almost stranger if she didn’t have, and, for once, Jonathan knows just what to do.
The advertisements on the television are grotesque, if that’s not too harsh a word. They’re meant to seem warm and inviting, but they end up making even him angry, and Jonathan almost never makes breakfast anyway. What mother needs to see that? Even a mother who works as hard as Amandine, who loves to cook with the passion of a child studying art, who frets over every tiny thing that has a snowball’s chance of hurting their daughter – even she could never make all that every morning.
On a holiday, maybe. On their little girl’s birthday, for a treat, with enough planning and his help, she could make most of that, and even then, how would they finish it all.
It’s just like a play, he reminds her, only they have even more time to set everything up. It’s a whole team cooking the food and setting it just right, and them not even the ones who set the table. The mother and all the children only have to walk in and speak to the cameras. They don’t get to eat it. The food might not even be real! Plenty of television is clever paintings and wonderful sculptures that look just so.
And still, even Jonathan wonders if little October is going hungry, not getting quite enough to fill her growing belly, seeing tables laid out like that. He can’t imagine how much it hurts Amandine to have to question it.
So, no, of course not, he reassures her. Nothing is set in stone, not even the wonderful pictures shared to every home. He tucks into his own breakfast, a carefully delicate cheese omelette, with delight. If she makes this or that or the other treat that breakfast table was laden with, it will be enough for any of them. And, if she’s too tired tomorrow, or anything other day, of course Jonathan will be happy with just coffee and cereal. And if she’s happy with coffee and cereal, then she should eat it to her heart’s delight. It’s a perfectly adequate breakfast, perfectly normal to eat, and nothing that should scandalize their daughter.
She gives him the same smile she always gives him, when she learns something new, like this is the most interesting knowledge in the world. That one he’s never had any trouble explaining to everyone who knows him, and he’ll never tire of it.

Why do some people talk so poorly of cereal coffee? Don't you know, all that is true of cereal coffee is true for bean coffee as well.
It's the same thing. You roast and grind some weird li'l seed and then you have bitter, brown water. Except that cereal coffee dials down on the caffein and some other, unpleasent ingredients.
