Logan watched as you played with Jingle. The cat was now 10 months old and seemed to be in a never-ending growth spurt. It had recently gotten over some of its animosity towards Logan and let him pet it from time to time.
Logan wanted to rip this laptop in half as he scrolled through an article titled "101 Ways to Commemorate your One Year Anniversary!" Every single thing was either stupid or wildly expensive. Who took a journey to the Sahara Desert to ride camels? Seemed over extravagant to him. So far the only tolerable idea was a necklace with his initials on it. He liked the idea but he wasn't sure how you'd feel about it. And, he couldn't just ask, he wanted it to be a surprise.
He glanced over at you again and this time caught you staring at him. He felt the stress ebb away just for a split second as you smile at him.
He had to make this special.
"Wade! Wade!" Logan pounded into the wood of Wade's apartment. He could hear Mary barking on the other side, where the hell was he?
The door finally opened after another minute to reveal Wade in a minion onesie.
"Oh, hey, thanks for waiting so patiently at the door," Wade said as Logan pushed his way into the apartment
"I need your help." Logan said, "What the fuck are you wearing?"
"A gift, you monster. Peter got this for me after X-Force was created." Wade gasped
"You look ridiculous," Logan says
"No, you look ridiculous." Wade sighs
"Forget it," Logan says, "I just need your help with something."
"Peanut, I'm flattered but I'm a taken man. And so are you. I think if you're going to experiment it should be with someone else. I can call Dopinder up, he'll want to do it in the taxi though."
"Not that, you fucking idiot." Logan groaned, swatting Wade's outstretched arms away from him, "We've got an anniversary coming up and I want to plan something, Just can't figure it out."
"You've come to the right place. I'm great at planning things." Wade grins, "How much time do we have?"
Logan cringes and glances at the clock on the wall," About twenty hours."
"You procrastinating son of a bitch."
Much to Logan's surprise, Wade is actually pretty good at this stuff. He approved of the necklace idea and now they were brainstorming how Logan would actually give it to you.
"What if you took a long walk in Central Park during sunset?" Wade asked, "Free and romantic."
"Last time we were at Central Park at sunset, a dog half the size of me peed on my shoes," Logan says, shuddering at the memory.
"Okay, forget that. What about...taking a dancing class together?"
Logan looks at Wade who sits opposite of him on the couch.
"Are you fucking with me?" He asked seriously
"I wish. Vanessa and I actually did that once. It was fun." Wade says, "I can Salsa now. Want to see?
"I'll pass on the dance class." Logan puts a hand up, "And the demonstration."
"Oh come on I'd love to see you in a tutu." Wade pleads
"Different idea," Logan growled, indicating that the subject was done. He loved you but he wasn't sure that love extended to tutus.
"Alright, well has she ever mentioned something she liked to do a lot? Maybe something she hasn't done in a while?"
Logan runs a hand through his hair, what would that even be? You always seemed so content with him, Laura, and Jingle.
"Wait." He paused, "She mentioned star gazing once."
"Now we're talking." Wade smiles
Logan had left you a note, stuck to the bathroom mirror that dictated to meet him on the roof at 8pm. You hadn't seen him all day and were a bit dishearted at his disappearance. Had he forgotten about today and run off with Wade?
You sighed and pulled one of Logan's flannels over your shirt. October was cooler than it was last year and you swore whenever you walked to work, you saw your breath in the air. The bag containing Logan's present caught your eye, it was a simple gift, nothing too extravagant but you grabbed it anyway, in hopes he had remembered
At first glance you thought the roof was empty, except for an odd blob of blankets, it was quiet.
"Logan?" You call, half expecting him to jump out from behind one of the chimneys
A loud shuffle is heard and before you know it, Logan is climbing out from under the mop of blankets.
"Hi." He greets
"Hi," You smile, "What were you doing?"
"C'mon, I'll show you."
Logan beckons to you and disappears back under the blankets. You sigh and follow him, what is he up to now?
As it turns out, the mop of blankets was well, a fort. Logan had built you a blanket fort on the roof of your building at 8pm at night on a Monday. A blow-up mattress lined the ground, one you recognized from Laura's closet and a My Little Pony blanket sat on top, keeping your skin from touching the rubber. A camping lantern illuminates the small space and you even notice a small bowl of pretzels in the corner.
"Logan, what is going on?" You laugh as he pulls you down to sit beside him on the air mattress.
"It's our anniversary, baby." He smiles
"I know." You breathe, relieved he hasn't forgotten.
"This," He gestures to the fort, "Is part of the gift."
You watch, wide-eyed as he pulls a small box out of his pocket.
"Logan Howlett, that better not be a ring." You say, suddenly scared.
It's not like you wouldn't say yes, you just didn't want to rush anything like that.
"It's not a ring, hon." Logan shakes his head, "That's for further down the road."
"I got you something." You say
"You go first then," Logan says, setting the little box down.
Suddenly you feel a bit shy. He'd gotten you jewelry and you had some dumb homemade gift.
"I bet it's perfect," Logan said as he took the bag from your lap, pulling the tissue paper from the bag
You nervously wring your hands together as he takes the gift in. A big homemade album sits in his hands, capturing nearly every moment from the past year.
Logan breathes your name as he turns he pages gently, "I love it."
"You do?" You ask
"Of course." He laughs, "There's even one in here of me sleeping on the beach."
You look down to see the picture that you had snapped of Logan, passed out in the sun when Wade had convinced everyone to pack up in the van and head to the beach in July.
"I had a sunburn for nearly 5 full minutes after that nap." Logan smiles
"Oh, poor you. Five minutes." You groan, "Some people's sunburn lasts for over five days, Logan."
He shudders at the idea, as if the possibility of a sunburn was terrifying, "Your turn, bub."
He hands you the little velvet box and you slowly open it. Inside a delicate silver chain sits a small circular medallion on it, with an L engraved on it.
"Logan..."
"You don't have to wear it. Just keep it okay?" He asks nervously, his eyes scanning your face for a reaction.
"Are you kidding me?" Your gaze snaps up to his, "I'm wearing this."
He laughs as you eagerly hand it to him so he can put it on you. You hear him curse under his breath as he fumbles with the little clasp.
"Are you alright back there, Wolverine?"
"Fine." He grunts as his fingers brush your neck
You pull away when he finally has it fastened, moving it around the chain to center it.
"Perfect." Logan breathes
"Really? I thought it needed to be a bit more to the right." You say, pushing it so it is closer to the center of your chest.
"Was talking about you," Logan says
"Oh." You say, flustered at his flirting
"Oh." He mimics with a smirk
You watch him move a bit, like he's some perfect daydream in your eyes as he switches off the camping lantern and pulls you down to lay on the mattress next to him. You lay there in the dark for a second, listening to him shuffle around.
"Logan, I'm not having rooftop sex with you when any of our neighbors can walk up here and see us." You say
You hear him chuckle in the darkness, "We'll save that for later. I've got something else."
"No blowjobs either." You huff
"You're such a pervert." He says, "This isn't about sex."
You're not sure what else it could be as you lie there on the My Little Pony blanket.
"Fucking, fuck." Logan grumbles
"What the hell are you doing?" You ask
"Nothing."
"Sure sounds like something."
Logan heaves another sigh and lets out a shout when whatever he has works. The small space of the tent is suddenly illuminated with colored stars. A laugh escapes your chest as the light changes from blue to green, and then red.
"What is this?" You ask as he lays down beside you
"Remember when you said you liked star gazing?" He asks
"Yes." You say
"I've brought the stars to you." Logan says, "With the help of this...thing."
You look over Logan's side to see a light-up...dog? With a piece of plastic in its back, creating the stars.
"What is that?" You ask
"Wade said it was a Pillow Pet." Logan shrugs
"Why does Wade have a pillow pet?" You ask
"You're really asking me that?"
"You're right. I should be asking why wouldn't Wade have a pillow pet."
You stare up at the multi-colored stars and wrap your fingers around the necklace Logan has given you.
"Thank you." You say quietly
"You like it? I thought the pillow pet was dumb." Logan says
You laugh and rest your head on his chest, "I love it."
Logan presses a kiss to your head and secures a hand to rest on your hip, "Good."
You lay there with him in comfortable silence. His fingers draw lazy circles into your hip. Your eyes feel heavy as you breathe in his scent, happy in his presence. The shrill ring of Logan's phone as you groan in drowsiness as Logan mumbles an apology.
"Wade? What's taking so long?"
Logan's gruff tone into his phone has you perking up. What was he planning with Wade of all people.
"She's about to fall asleep. You're the slowest motherfucker around. Al could've done this quicker."
You presume Wade has something smart to say back because Logan is scowling and hanging the phone up.
"You alright?" You ask
"Fine. Wade's annoying."
"Well, I knew that." You laugh
Logan's phone dings, this time with a text and you lean over to read it. Much to your disappointment, he places his entire meaty hand over your eyes so you can't see the message.
"Cheating on me?" You joke
"Yeah, I'm cheating on you with a cancer patient who looks like a burned testicle," Logan says
"Knew it." You sigh, sitting up
"Keep your eyes shut," Logan says as he begins to move around again
The sudden blast of cold air has you deducing that he's taking the blanket fort down. To your surprise, it's darker than you thought it would be as you keep your eyes closed. Normally, the outside lights would leak through the thin skin of your eyelids. You feel a blanket drop onto your shoulders, Logan must've taken note of your shivering.
"Open." He whispers in your ear
You open your eyes to, well, nothing. Your eyes blink, trying to get used to the darkness. Somewhere a car honks and the yell of someone hits your ears.
"Logan?" You ask
"Right here." He wraps a big arm around you.
After another moment, you realize, it's not your eyes. and every building around you has gone dark.
"Look up," Logan says
Your eyes, follow his pointing finger to the sky, to the stars that you've never seen here in the city.
"Logan, what...what is happening?" You laugh looking at him and then the sky again
"You didn't really think that I was going to let you star gaze with a Pillow Pet?" He laughs
"How did you get everyone to turn the lights off?" You ask looking around trying to see where this blackout ends
"Oh, that's what Wade was doing." Logan says, "We tracked down the major power plant for the city and Wade cut a few wires."
"What."
Logan looks at you a bit sheepishly. It's hard to see his expression in the dark but you can tell he's making that guilty face he makes when he knows he's done something wild. It's the same face he pulled after eating your Olive Garden leftovers two weeks ago.
"That is majorly illegal." You say slowly
"Wade's fine." Logan brushes you off
"You just plunged the entire city into a blackout, Logan." You say
"But, I did it for you," Logan says resting his head on your shoulder
You sigh and fight the smile that works its way onto your face. He was going to be the death of you one of these days. You sigh and rest your head against his.
"You did it for me." You smile
"So you like it?" Logan asks hopeful, his head coming off your shoulder
"I love it." You laugh, falling back onto the air mattress, pulling him back with you.
"Good. Thought I was in trouble there." Logan laughs
"You're crazy. Can't believe you did all this for me." You say looking up at the stars, you swear you can even see the Big Dipper thanks to Logan.
"Wanted today to be special." He shrugs, moving to lay his head on your chest
"Yeah well, if the police come knocking, it'll certainly be one for the books." You say, pushing your hands through his hair
"Why do you think I had Wade cut the wires?"
Next Extra
I hope everyone knows what a Pillow Pet is. I'm talking about one of the Pillow Pets that was like a night light and had stars that glowed out of it. That kind of Pillow Pet. I had one, he was a little brown dog.

Two 650-foot-tall (200-m) towers have risen in China's Gansu Province. Combined with an array of 30,000 mirrors arranged in concentric circles, the new facility is expected to generate over 1.8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity every year.
While photovoltaic panels that directly convert sunlight to electricity are what most people think of when they hear the term "solar power," there is another method of harvesting the Sun's power that's been steadily developing since the early 1980s. Known as solar thermal or concentrated solar power (CSP), these systems rely on mirrors known as heliostats to bounce sunlight to a central gathering point. There, the concentrated beams heat a transfer fluid that in turn heats a working fluid. This fluid then evaporates, turns a turbine, and generates electricity.
In 2014, what was then the world's largest solar thermal power station opened in the Mojave Desert in the United States. [The] facility consists of three different towers surrounded by heliostat arrays and has a capacity of 392 megawatts. [...] The world's largest CSP, the Noor Complex Solar Power Plant, now operates in the Sahara Desert in Morocco where it churns out 510 megawatts of power.[...]
Much like the facility in the US, the Ghazhou solar thermal energy storage project will use multiple towers: in this case, two of them, both sharing the same steam turbine.
But unlike the US facility, where each tower is surrounded by its own field of heliostats, the Chinese project will deploy a field of mirrors set in overlapping concentric circles. The mirrors will then be able to follow the path of the Sun and reflect light to either tower in the most efficient way possible. It's an advance that will improve CSP efficiency significantly, says project manager, Wen Jianghong.
"The mirrors in the overlapping area can be utilized by either tower," he said. "This configuration is expected to enhance efficiency by 24 percent." Helping that efficiency along is the fact that the mirrors being used have a 94% reflection efficiency, meaning that most of the solar energy that hits them is beamed back to the power-producing towers.

Word Count: 0.9k
Song Suggestions: Wildest Dreams (Taylor's Version) by Taylor Swift
You two clicked immediately. It was strange, you were both so opposite. I guess that's what made it work. What he lacked you made up for and reversed. Not many other people knew much about your personal life except for him. Your favourite thing about him was his words. Everytime he rambled about the most random times you could listen forever.
Whenever he looked at you, you melted. When he smiled your face burned from blushing. And whenever he talked you just wanted to kiss him. But you had no clue if he felt the same. For a genius he was quite oblivious to your flirting and comments. If he liked you he definitely had a good way of hiding it.
There was only one issue.
***
The movie was about halfway through and you made sure to turn the couch into a bed, Spencer had come over to watch it with you. If someone asked you tomorrow morning what the movie was about you wouldn't be able to say, he'd been talking the whole time.
"...That actually isn't correct," He started, moving his hands around for emphasis. "In the wild, there are two formally recognised lion subspecies. The African lion is found in Africa, south of the Sahara desert. The Asiatic lion exists in one small population around Gir Forest National Park in western India. Wild lions in the west and central Africa are more closely related to these Asiatic lions in India than to those found in southern and east Africa. So realistically the characters would be..."
Listening to him talk was like heaven, but at the same time it was hell. He just looked so huggable.
No, kissable. The butterflies in your stomach made you giggle, he paused and frowned. Looking like a lost puppy.
"What? Did I say something wrong?" Stumbling over the words as he spoke, you stopped laughing and grabbed his hands while smiling.
"No, no you didn't. It was just…cute." You muttered.
"Thank you?" A confused look on his face when he responded. Your heart shattered a little, that was obvious wasn't it? Did his feelings not reciprocate? "Oh! Also, manes on male lions tell a story. Male lions grow impressive manes the older they get. These manes grow up to 16 cm long and are a sign of dominance. The older they get, the darker their manes go. As well as attracting females, their manes may also protect…"
His words trailed off again and he stared at you. "You keep being weird. You're all red. Did I say something wrong? I know that sometimes I speak for too long and I go on and on, which annoys people-" He sighed, "And I'm doing it now. I'm sorry."
"No, please. I love when you talk. It's calming." Grinning, you continued, "So what about protection?"
"Oh, um…manes can also protect their neck and head from injuries during a fight." He slowed down his speaking, like he was a little self-conscious about his words now. When he stopped talking everything was silent, except for the sound of the movie quietly playing on the TV in front of you.
"Spence? What's wrong?" Tilting your head and looking at him, he was staring at the TV but he didn't seem to be watching it. Just thinking, his eyebrows furrowed like they normally did while he was deep in thought. "What are you thinking about?"
"Have you been flirting with me?" He blurted out, looking back up and at you. You almost jumped, not expecting that question.
"What?" Still in shock it took you a minute to respond. Letting the silence fill the air again, he didn't speak. He just stared, waiting for an answer. "I-What would you think if I was?"
"I would've wished I'd noticed sooner." He sighed, making that puppy-dog face you loved. Neither of you really knew what to do and sat there for what you would believe could've been hours.
"Fuck it." You breathed out and as if he knew what you were thinking as well he leaned in at the same time as you, kissing you softly. After a couple seconds you felt his hands wrap around your face, holding it as he kissed more.
Your hands didn't know where to go, after a couple more seconds they finally found their place, one around the back of his neck and the other tucked around his waist. Pulling you closer to him.
A couple seconds later you both moved away from each other, only long enough to catch your breaths and muttering random words. Before you knew it the both of you were back to kissing, to make up for how long you guys spent not kissing.
The longer it went the closer to each other you got, his one hand started to slide down your neck and then your waist when suddenly your hand hit a button and the movie that was still playing turned up to full volume.
Both scrambling for the remote he managed to shut the TV off, surrounding you both in the darkness of the night.
The two of you continued to kiss every once in a while but it didn't take long for the darkness to make you both sleepy and you ended up just cuddling. You fell asleep with your head on his chest, listening to his heart beat. He had one hand holding you close to him, as if someone was coming to steal you away. The other hand tracing up and down your back until he too, drifted off to sleep.

i learned what are the most mysterious places in the world
Marree Man – The fact that there is not a single witness to the creation of the Marree Man speaks to the absolute isolation of central South Australia. Somehow in 1998, one person or a group of people were able to create a 2.6-mile long line drawing of an aboriginal hunter, without being seen. In the midst of barren, arid land in South Australia, the Marree Man is the largest geoglyph and work of art in the world. Cut into the harsh landscape with lines over 115 feet wide and one foot deep, the towering Marree Man is easily visible from space. Thirteen years after the Marree Man was discovered during a flyover, little is known about its origin. Although we may never know the true origin of the Marree Man, it is certainly one of most intriguing modern day mysteries.
Chocolate Hills – Bohol Island in the Philippines during the dry season, you might notice what looks like thousands of chocolate kisses protruding from the terrain. These mysterious conical mounds are known as the Chocolate Hills. There are approximately 1,268 individual hills, their heights ranging from 100 to 160 feet, though the highest is almost 400 feet high. The hills, which are almost all symmetrical, consist of grass-covered limestone and turn brown during the dry season. Despite the abundance of hills, it is unclear how they were formed. There are multiple geological explanations ranging from oceanic volcano activity to limestone weathering. Numerous legends and tales also exist to explain the Chocolate Hills.
Giants Nest – In 1949 a geologist named Vadim Kolpakov discovered a large mound of limestone in the north of the Irkutsk region in southeastern Siberia. The cone is curiously shaped with a crater at the top and a small mound in the center. The mound is about 40 meters high and 100 meters across at the base. The smaller mound at the top is about 12 meters high. The crater was named Patomskiy, after a nearby river, but local residents call it “the Fiery Eagle’s Nest”. Since the discovery of the crater, there have been many theories as to what could have created it. For a long time it was believed to be a meteorite impact structure. Some linked it to the Tunguska meteorite, whose remains have never been discovered. But the crater does not resemble any other known meteorite site. Even now, the origin of the crater is not discovered.
Richat Structure – In the midst of vast, vacant Sahara desert, just outside of Ouadane, Mauritania, lies a 30-mile wide geological oddity known the Richat Structure, sometimes called the “Eye of Africa.” From space, this natural curiosity forms a distinct and unmistakable bull’s-eye that once served as a geographical landmark for early astronauts as they passed over the Sahara. Once thought to be an impact crater due to its circularity, the unusual formation is now widely believed to have been caused by the erosion of a geological dome formed by pressure from a bulb of molten magma below.
Plain of Jars – The Plain of Jars is a collection of large stone jars interspersed throughout the Xieng Khouang plain in the Lao Highlands. The stone structures are mostly made of sedimentary rock and, ranging from 3 to 10 feet in height, each can weigh up to 14 tons. To date, the origin of the jars is unknown, though archaeologists believe that they were originally used between 1,500 and 2,000 years ago. Many researchers have theorized that the jars may have once served as funerals urns or food storage. As local Laotian legend would have it, the jars were created by Khun Cheung, an ancient king of giants who lived in the highlands. It is said that Cheung, after fighting a long and victorious battle, created the jars in order to brew huge amounts of celebratory lao lao rice wine.
Giant’s Grave of Coddu Vecchiu – Giant’s or Tomba Dei giganti, are megalithic gallery graves that were used as public tombs during the Bronze Age. The massive gravestones were built by the Nuragic civilization, which existed in Sardinia from the 2nd millennium BCE. to the 2nd century CE. Despite the imaginative name, the sites were not the burial site of any giant; they were giant community burial chambers. Though we know the tombs had a funerary purpose, more questions remain. Little is known about the rituals or traditional beliefs that motivated their construction. Were they mass graves? Were they built to facilitate the journey into the afterlife? Since their existence has yet to be justified by scientific research, they have been credited to the supernatural, which has only increased their mystery. Legend also claims that yes, indeed, these were the tombs of powerful giants.
Zone of Silence – Pilot Francisco Sarabia was flying over a patch of desert land in Mexico when his instruments started to act increasingly odd. The man had to make an emergency landing in the middle of nowhere. Little did he know that this "nowhere" would be later dubbed "The Zone of Silence.” Weird radio silence isn't the only oddity of the creepy Zone. Like, what’s that weird trio that locals keep meeting in the Zone? They’re two men and a woman. Every time people see them, they’re wearing bizarre clothing that isn't suitable for a journey in the desert whatsoever. On top of all that, the Zone of Silence is known as a 50 km patch of deserted land where meteorites come crashing down on an eerily regular basis. On July 11, 1970, the US launched an ATHENA rocket from the Air Force base in Green River, Utah. The rocket was supposed to land somewhere in the area of White Sands in New Mexico. Instead, it went off course and, as if being pulled by some external force, crashed right in the heart of the Zone of Silence.
Michigan Triangle – Stretching from Ludington to Benton Harbor, Michigan and to Manitowoc, Wisconsin, the Lake Michigan Triangle has inspired numerous accounts of activity that are difficult to explain by rational thought. The mystery began in 1891, when a schooner named the Thomas Hume set off across the Lake to pick up lumber. Almost overnight in a torrent of wind, the Thomas Hume disappeared along with its crew of seven sailors. The wooden boat was never found. After the turn of the century, strange events happened at steady intervals. Of the more mysterious is the case of the Rosa Belle. In 1921 eleven people inside the ship, who were all members of the Benton Harbor House of David, disappeared and their ship was found overturned and floating in Lake Michigan. While it appeared that the ship had been damaged in a collision, no other ship had reported an accident and no other remains had been found.
Alaska Triangle – The Alaska Triangle is a place in the untouched wilderness where mystery lingers and people go missing at a very high rate. The area began attracting public attention in October 1972, when a small, private plane carrying U.S. House Majority Leader Hale Boggs, Alaska Congressman Nick Begich seemingly vanished into thin air. For more than a month, 50 civilian planes and 40 military aircraft plus dozens of boats, covered a search area of 32,000 square miles, but no trace of the plane, the men, wreckage or debris were ever found. Afterward, more planes went down, hikers went missing, and Alaskan residents and tourists seemed to vanish into thin air. In fact, since 1988, more than 16,000 people have disappeared in the Alaska Triangle, with a missing person rate at more than twice the national average. These disappearances are blamed on everything from severe weather to aliens, to swirling energy vortexes, to an evil shape-shifting demon of Tlingit Indian lore called Kushtaka, with no scientific explanation to the disappearances till today.
The Initiation Well – The Initiation well is 88 feet deep well located on the land of Quinta da Regaleira. Actually, it was used for ceremonial purposes. There is another small well near this well. Both these wells are connected by tunnels. The larger well contains a 27-meter spiral staircase with several small landings and the smaller well contains straight stairs that connect a series of ring-shaped floors to one another. The smaller well is also called the 'Unfinished Well'. The depth of this larger well is equal to the four-storey building, which becomes narrower on going closer to the ground. It is believed that there is some kind of light comes out from the well inside the ground and comes outwards. Surprisingly, there is no system of light inside this well, then where from this light comes, it is the secret. Anyone who comes to visit here, always raises the question of where the light comes from inside the well? Till today this secret is unsolved.

The Richat Structure, also known as the “Eye of the Sahara,” is a prominent circular feature in the Sahara Desert of west-central Mauritania. Measuring 30 miles (50 km) in diameter, the structure was originally thought to have been formed by the impact of an asteroid; however, it is now known to be an eroded structural dome of layered sedimentary rocks.

Brazil has world’s worst air quality this week, holds 75% of all wildfires burning in South America
Tormented by weeks of insufferable heat, extremely dry conditions, and widespread wildfires, Brazil’s air quality this week hit the worst levels in the world and breathing it is considered “unhealthy” and “hazardous” in many regions.
According to the Swiss company IQAir, a United Nations partner that monitors global air quality, the city of Cruzeiro do Sul, in the northern state of Acre, recorded the worst air quality in the entire world on Monday and Tuesday. Among the major cities worldwide, São Paulo had the worst air quality on these two days.
In fact, Brazil is dryer than the Sahara Desert. According to MetSul Meteorology, the phenomenon results from the combination of prolonged drought, while the desert in northern Africa is experiencing higher-than-usual humidity levels. While some areas of São Paulo reached 7% humidity, regions near the Sahara — like Cairo, Egypt — had 36% humidity.
The situation is worst in the Southwest, Central-West and the North of Brazil, where many cities are in an emergency situation in which authorities recommend people avoid outdoor activities between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. All of this is happening amid temperatures above 30ºC (86° F), reaching up to 45ºC (113 °F) in cities in the Central-West.

Monday mood? The sand cat (Felis margarita). This feline is small and solitary. It inhabits arid regions including Africa’s Sahara Desert and parts of the Middle East and Central Asia. Built for life in the desert, the thick soles of this cat’s paws allow it to walk on scorching sand during the day and cold sand at night. In parts of its range, daytime temperatures can soar up to 124° Fahrenheit (51° C) and then plummet to 31° Fahrenheit (-0.5° C) by night. The sand cat is also a “fearless snake hunter” known to pursue snakes (even venomous vipers) for a meal. Hausaland
Hausaland, sometimes referred to as the Hausa Kingdoms, was a group of small independent city-states in northern central Africa between the Niger River and Lake Chad which flourished from the 15th to 18th century CE. The origins of the Hausa are not known, but one hypothesis suggests they were a group of indigenous peoples joined by a common language - Hausa - while another theory explains their presence as a consequence of a migration of peoples from the southern Sahara Desert. The cities prospered thanks to local and interregional trade in such commodities as salt, precious metals, leather goods, and slaves. Islam was adopted by many of the rulers and elite of the city-states in the 14th and 15th century CE but was also one of the reasons for their loss of independence when the Muslim Fulani leader Usman dan Fodio (r. 1803-1815 CE) launched a holy war and conquered the region in the early 19th century CE.
Geography & Origins
The name Hausaland derives from the Hausa term Kasar hausa, meaning the 'country of the Hausa language', although the area also included other peoples such as the Tuareg, Fulbe, and Zabarma. The term 'Hausa' was in use only from the 16th century CE as the people called themselves according to which specific city-state or kingdom they belonged to.
Hausaland was located in the Sahel region between the Niger River and Lake Chad in north-central Africa in what is today northern Nigeria. The Sahel is the semi-arid strip of land running across Africa between the Sahara Desert in the north and the Savannah grassland to the south. Hausland, specifically, stretched from the Air mountains (north) to the Jos plateau (south) and from Borno (east) to the Niger Valley (west). This region saw the development of towns by the Hausa-speaking people from 1000 to 1300 CE.
The exact origins of the Hausa cities are not known, but theories include a migration of peoples from the southern Sahara who, abandoning their own lands following the increased desiccation of that area, established new settlements in what would become known as Hausaland. An alternative theory suggests that the Hausa people originally lived on the western shore of Lake Chad and when the lake shrank (as a consequence of the same climatic changes that affected the Sahara) they occupied this new and fertile land and then eventually spread to the immediate north and west. There is as yet, unfortunately, no archaeological evidence to support either of these two theories. As a consequence, there is a third hypothesis, which is that the Hausa had not migrated from anywhere but were indigenous to the region. Support for this theory lies in the fact that there is no tradition of migration in Hausa oral history.
There is, though, a foundation legend, known as the Bayajida or Daura legend, although this probably dates to the 16th century CE and reflects the increased influence of Islam in the region at that time. According to this tradition, Bayajida, a prince from Baghdad, arrived at the court of the ruler of the Kingdom of Kanem (or the Bornu Empire as it became by the 16th century CE). Receiving an unfavourable reception, Bayajida headed eastwards until he came upon the city of Daura. There, the queen and her kingdom were being terrorized by a great snake. Bayajida stepped in and killed the troublesome serpent and promptly married the queen. Together they had a son called Bawogari who then went on to have six sons of his own, each of which became the king of a Hausa city-state. Meanwhile, Bayajida had another son, this time with one of his concubines. This illegitimate son, called Karbogari, had seven sons, and these went on to rule seven other Hausa cities. This story neatly explains how the various cities were established but not, of course, just where Daura and its queen came from.
