Chapter 6 - Excerpt 3

It was chaos. Everywhere.

Celeste Grainge stood at the stage and surveyed the situation before her keenly as Hunters jumped up, and, roguish creatures that they were, crowded over the back exit to chase after the real rogues.

I turned in my seat to see what it was they were doing; there was a lot of pushing and struggling, I could make out that much, but nothing besides. They didn��t even need orders to make chase after the escapees, I noticed with some discomfort.

It was the red of the walls, I decided. Red was a very triggering colour, and could instill an end number of things in people. Bravery, passion, love. War, violence, hate. Two sides of the same coin. The impact things like these could have was often looked over, and some people would scoff at those who thought that way.

The same ones that were currently and rather unfortunately trying to break down the walls trying to get after their precious ‘Rogues’.

I hope they get away, I thought.

They won’t get away, I remembered.

I remembered Desiree as well, how frightened she’d been as she’d followed her company out. Understandable really, considering the friends she kept. But who was I to judge? She was my friend too, and I could somehow never seem to do more for her.

I got up then and resolved to assist in the infirmaries. Hunters would be needing their shots, I reminded myself, and I’d best be useful. Useful was the only thing that let you make a place for yourself in the Chambers. And that was the only thing that mattered, if you didn’t want to starve. Have a little patch of yourself on the red tapestry that was Knightville’s Chambers. You could be brilliant, you could be better than the rest, but if you weren’t useful, you were deadweight.

Now, that wasn’t to say I didn’t love my job here, as a Healer, in the Chambers. It was one of the better job oppurtunities anyone could get really, healing. You had to study extremely hard for it, sure, and very few actually made it to the Healing sector (there are only hundreds of us), but if you did, you were set for life. And so what if the Seconds were terrible, and you could never get many friends amongst the Thirds? It was a question of adaptation, really. Adaptation was a requirement for all species of life, and not even Diaforians were above that, much as they’d like to believe otherwise.

My step quickened as the shouts grew louder, even as I left the warfield and arrived at the sanatorium.

It was a lovely place; the receptionist area was wide and high like the auditorium, but mostly blue, quiet and always smelling clean. The windows were wide and tall and touched both floor and ceiling, so as to better recieve the little light we could never seem to get. It was a place where you could wait for something to happen to you.

At least, that’s what the dreamer part of me thought.

The practical Healer part of me, on the other hand, was wondering if my eyes were functioning correctly, or if Adam Forrest of all people was standing in front of the receptionist’s desk of the Healers’ sanatorium.

“Mr. Forrest? What are you doing here?” I blurted, forgetting my manners in my obvious surprise.

“Thorne,” Adam regarded, turning to see me.

I prefer Tyler James, I almost said. Almost. No one cared about what you preferred in the Chambers.

I nodded.

Adam evaded my question. “Come to make yourself useful?” He asked instead.

Have you? I thought. “Quite,” I said.

“Going to the same place then,” Adam said lightly.

So good at pretending, I thought, but didn’t say. There were so many things that I thought of but never said. External restraint was never a problem, however, and in my mind, I could do whatever I liked. There were no mind-readers in Knightville, anyway, and in Adam’s case, his power was oral manipulation, the ability to have anyone do what he said with his voice alone, so it was hardly a problem. And if there was ever any danger of getting any truth out of me if he was authoritarian enough—well, there wasn’t, because Adam was powerful, both in his position at the Chambers and his own magic, and when you were that powerful, you inevitably became at least somewhat arrogant.

And when you’re arrogant, you think you know everything.

I raised an eyebrow. “The same place?”

His eyes were full of meaning. “Yes,” he said.

Oh, I realised. He wants to go there.

I stopped the smile before it could tug on my lips.

People walked around us. Some even stopped in their tracks for a moment to stare at our interaction. What was the famous, handsome, successful Adam Forrest doing here? they thought. Moreover, what was he doing talking to that what’s-his-name nobody from Third? Surely Adam was having him run an errand. He didn’t keep company like that, ever.

Oh, yes, I meant what I thought. Adam Forrest was tall and good-looking in the way that had all the women sighing in absolute mourning that they could never have him, because he was already married—to his job. He had gleaming black hair and eyes that struck ferociously with his pale skin, and his face structure only made it pop more. He was neat and sharp and always smelt clean. He And it wasn’t just his looks either. He was young success. He was hard, no, he was impossible to get. He was everything a lady could ever want and thirst for, and while I had a great deal of respect for the female species, I couldn’t help but think that some of them had absolutely nothing better to do with their time, judging from all the gossip I heard.

But at the end of the day, it didn’t matter how worthy a woman was, or how much she may have fitted Adam’s taste, or how much she may have loved him. It didn’t matter, and it probably never would.

The door was locked and we were alone. We’d checked and double-checked for good measure. My back was against the wall and Adam had pushed me there. Our hands were on each other and we were kissing.

Have you ever had a secret so well hidden, so in the dark, that when you walked back into the light you almost believed it had all been a dream?

“Someone’s impatient,” I commented idly when Adam finally let go of me, both of us out of breath.

“No one was here,” Adam explained. “I probably wouldn’t get to do this all week by the looks of things, so now seemed like a pretty good time to do it.”

“Practical as always,” I huffed into his ear, shaking my head a little.

He frowned at that a little, but then seemed to decide he’d gotten enough oxygen in his system to go right back to kissing me, and did precisely that.

Make no mistake, there were no feelings lost on us, romantic or otherwise. The only thing that brought us together was the secret that we shared, a necessity of sorts. One secret was all it took to keep coming back to this, to the dark room where we left our reality and responsibilities outside the door, only to reclaim them again when we came back out.

That said, I had no illusions that this—this lover affair of ours—would last in any way. It would probably only make the year, tops. Secrets could do a lot of things, but they couldn’t sustain. Secrets ruined, and this relationship of ours was built to be secret, and that secret would one day die, like everything ultimately did.

Still. Didn’t mean I couldn’t enjoy it while it lasted, and Adam was, actually, not the worst kisser.

“Why now, though?” I asked, like I always did.

“Can’t I want to?” he answered, like he always did.

And we went back to kissing again, like we always did.

Adam left first, because he had more pressing issues to deal with, and because we needed to be inconspicuous. I didn’t mind staying in the dark room for a little while longer; that way I could hold onto the remembrance of what we had but would never get to keep.

It didn’t hurt—it just took the comfort away, and most people didn’t get to have that.

On the outside, I immediately heard someone bumping into Adam. There was a lot of loud panting, and Adam was waiting patiently for the other person to speak.

“Slow down, Third,” Adam was saying. “What is it? Any update on the Rogues?”

What the person replied was both dread and comfort.

“They got away.”

BIOGRAPHY.

born in new orleans, to two loving and hardworking parents. they lived in the lower ninth ward, in a small two bedroom home. money wasn’t abundant, but there was enough to give them everything they needed.

river was born with type one diabetes and has required insulin to function properly from the start.

their father, worked as a street musician and helped their mother at the metaphysical shop she owned. along with the shop, luna was a well known wiccan and head of one of the many local covens.

with the global environment declining over the years, tropical storm season had become even more dangerous. one particular hurricane hit the city and the big easy didn't stand a chance. over half the city was affected, the lower income areas the worst. hundreds died and among them were river's parents.

they were pushed into the system, foster families that were near capacity with displaced children. river couldn't stand it. hated the clothes they put them in, the way the tried to bring them to church, bringing them to therapy, throwing away their crystals and trying to cut their hair. it didn't take long until they'd run away.

at twelve years old, they were on their own. bouncing from family friend to family friend until their best friend's family got word and took them in as one of their own.

they appreciated everything that family did for them and the strong bond they had with their friend, it was more than they could've asked for. being accepted for who they were and loved made all the difference in helping them survive their teen years.

at the age of seventeen, they decided to get their ged and river said the hardest goodbyes to new orleans and their second hom when they left to go travel the country.

on their own and in their travels, many things were learned. one being how to survive off nothing, as they struggled to find any kind of work. river was not very reliable when it came to day jobs and set schedules, though they attempted to adapt.

the biggest struggle was this constant feeling of emptiness along with rotating periods of random moods that would sometimes come about for no reason at all. it had been there since losing their family and most of the time they just rode it out. in the worst times they turned to substances for help, as they’d done in the past. this lead them down a spiral of abusive relationships, bad run ins with dealers and law enforcement, shady work to keep afloat, etc.

away from home and lacking inhibition, they ended up becoming a garbage disposal for the many options of drugs available in america's underground; using them to fill a void they couldn’t close no matter how hard they tried until it almost killed them.

which is exactly what happened, they ended up overdosing in an all-night diner's bathroom and when they woke up they were in a hospital room with no clue what had happened. it gave them a wake up call for sure, and it was decided that they needed to start over.

after a couple years and many failures, river managed to hitch a ride as far as texas. they had a good feeling about dallas and updated those in new orleans where they were. that was when they were told of the trust money their parents left behind for river to be given to them when they reached the age of twenty-five.

the temptation was there to blow the money on more travels and parties but it was quickly squashed. it was an obvious sign from the stars and they decided to go all in on a new venture, opening up a shop with a close friend called the broom closet.

the new distractions did not shake the vices they picked up on the road but they certainly slowed them down. they are trying their best to kick their many bad habits so that one day they will thrive in the world again.

beyond that they used their natural knack for seduction and flirtatious nature to make money for the shop and meet new people by dancing at the kit-kat club. determined something would come of their life someday.

when they aren’t working at either of their jobs, they can be found writing lyrics or poetry, dancing, partying, or sneaking out of the home of one of their many casual romantic encounters. river is excited for the future and whatever the new start would bring for them in this cyber metropolis.

river has type one diabetes and has a pump to regulate it better. it’s important they are able to see a medical professional regularly. they also wear a medical alert bracelet with this information.

they despise sleeping alone, whether it be from having people around them in close quarters for most of their life or just the loathing of being alone in general, they tend to stick close to people if they can sleep at all.

comparable to a cat they can sleep anywhere and will curl up or drape themselves over people for affection.

they wear their heart on their sleeve and fall in love quite easy, unfortunately their over devotion and wandering eyes have made it difficult to hold any long term relationship except with one person who has always understood the amount of love they have and just because they love someone it does not mean they love another any less.

river has a long history of casual relationships and having a select few they are fully committed to exclusively, however they develop deep feelings for people easily and adore them long after any romance leaves. they are very open with their sexuality and the love of the human body. river has often used casual sex as another coping mechanism and occasional self-destructive tendency.

they love dancing, parties, poetry, and music - they also adore talking to people and will be happy to introduce themselves to anyone and everyone

music has always had a strong place in their life, though they've never had the desire to pursue it professionally. they can play almost any guitar, bass, piano, pan flute, viola, and harmonica.

“work  away,”  she  hums,  nearly  giving  in  to  curiosity  and  peeking  in  the  mirror,  but  not  wanting  to  disrupt  lana's  working  process.  she  needed  to  look  presentable,  after  all.  the  dabbing  on  her  cheeks  distracts  her  from  the  nervous  pit  in  her  stomach,  hoping  that  the  red  doesn't  turn  her  into  a  CLOWN.  “i'm  trusting  you  on  this  one,”  the  opportunity  for  gossip  helps  even  more,  celeste  doing  her  best  to  keep  her  expression  neutral.  “you  know  i  can  never  turn  down  a  little  tea  sesh,”  despite  her  efforts,  lips  tick  upwards.  “don't  know  if  i've  ever  told  you  about  him,  but  one  of  my  exes  wiggled  his  way  into  my  life  again.”  she  can  already  hear  the  scolding,  bracing  herself  for  it  internally.  “his  name  is  forrest,  and  if  you  tell  charlotte  i'm  speaking  to  him  she'll  murder  me.  so  let's  not  do  that,  okay  ?”

despite appearances or her known label around town for being a prom queen ( read : a spoiled brat ) lana's been always eager to help her friends , whatever means necessary . especially when it came to looks & making someone pretty . smile grows on her features as celeste offers a compromise , a kind she would very much like , whilst continuing to dab the brush gently on her skin . “ fair is fair , “ lana agrees , pausing for a mere moment so she could look at her artwork in the mirror . “ just let me work my magic , “ she reassures , free hand already taking a hold of her makeup bag in order to fetch a few shades of red to test . if there's anything she's learned over the years in the beauty industry , it's that everyone has their own shade — you just have to find it . “ so tell me all the hot gossip you know while i do this ... who do we like , who do we hate , i'm all ears , spill ! “

"elemental" characters and oh god why the fuck is it so obvious when the series makes it seem like it's supposed to be a mystery

this is a silly little rant/whatever about how series' (specifically in the gacha community) always make it so obvious who is who like bro

the characters always look something lke this and like

it's always bad boy x bad girl and then soft girl x soft boy because ofc there's romance (nothing wrong with romance but it's in like every glmm/gls like this istg) and it's so obvious with the names and designs that forrest = plant/nature winter = ice/water ash = dark or smthn pheonix = fire cries there's actually usually more but i don't wanna spend like an hour making characters for this shit oh yeah they're also almost always white

and then there's my ocs

they're a bit more subtle also these are slightly older designs, they don't look exactly like this flint and luna are not as subtle but eh the rest i think are harder to figure out, at least without the last names Ace Foris = plant/nature Crystal Conmara = water/ice Flint Eld = fire Celeste Aelius = light/sun Luna Aster = dark/moon

oh also usually the series' follow like the fire one or the dark one or the super all powerful every element one give some love to the plant people and the water people and whatever else also i have more poc ocs in the series, these are just the ones i have made in gacha club rn and i am not spending 4 hours trying to remake my other ocs in gacha club because that's just painful

idk where this is even going just a character design pet peeve and also a bit of a writing pet peeve

because bro the plot is always the same like 2 plots

plot one: Character is invited to a super hard to get in school filled with magical people, they run into someone super poweful and are like just yelled at, and then they go to class or smthn. Some event causes them to set out on a quest to find other elemental people and it usually involves unlocking powers or finding crystals that unlock said powers; said crystals are usually "bonded" with respective character. Elemental group then defeats some evil villian that was trying to stop them from having powers or like trying to harvest the powers or whatever.

plot two: Group of friends or siblings are actually like elemental powered people. They have to unlock their powers or find some crystal that gives them their powers. They are of course destined to have the crystal. Some big bad trys to stop them from getting the crystals or tries to take them away. Group wins. Yayyyyyyyy
