Book Description:
Adult education teacher, Alison Larkin has a second chance at love after her husband is killed in a car accident. Her new love interest comes in the form of a 20-year old student called HB, whose reputation as a bad boy and poor student has everyone questioning her attraction to him. Alison finds him to be nothing like his reputation as a drug-dealer and trouble maker.
Although HB has few high school credits to his name, he is flying through the coursework in adult education. Alison learns she and HB share a memory of a dramatic rescue at a local amusement park.
HB has a secret he has yet to discover, but when he does, he must convince Alison to give him another chance at love.

Excerpt
She put the flowers on the coffee table and moved her hand toward the sofa. He sat, and she did too. “Didn’t you have something you want to talk to me about?” Momentarily, he couldn’t remember what it was.
“Did you forget?” She gave him an encouraging smile. “So much has happened. It seems like ages ago.”
Then it came rushing back to him—Dr. Sims—the things he remembered and the yearbook pictures. He sat with his hands clasped and his head down, thinking. Was now the time to tell her? He jerked his head up. “I’m not sure this is a good time to tell you what I know.”
She frowned. “That sounds serious.”
“It is and a bit weird too.”
She leaned forward and clasped her hands together. “Why don’t you tell me, and I’ll decide how serious it is.”
HB shifted on the couch, trying to find a comfortable position. Finding none, he straightened and looked at her. “You know I felt like a different person when I came out of my coma?”
Alison nodded but remained quiet.
“And I wrote about the rescue at Cedar Springs?”
She remained stock still.
“I started adding one plus one, and I came up with something bizarre out there.”
Clearing her throat, Alison finally said, “You’re scaring me.”
He noisily let out his breath. “I’ve been seeing a counselor, and he told me about one of his patients, Ashton.” HB paused and rearranged his thoughts. “I talked to Ashton, who told me he had tried to kill himself but failed.”
“Oh, no!” Alison cried. “Please don’t tell me you want to kill yourself!” She leaned forward and tried to grasp his hand.
“No, I want to live again!” He let her touch his fingers before pulling back. Although contemplating suicide might be easier than telling Alison he was her dead husband—Robert.
“Anyway,” HB swallowed, “Ashton told me about soul walk-ins.”
“What did you say?” Alison asked, alarm creasing her brow. “Wait!” She jumped up and hurried down the hallway while he waited. He moved his forefinger over his thumb, wondering what would make her leave like that.
She returned with a small book, sat, and clutched it to her chest as if protecting it. Then, slowly, she eased the book onto her lap and opened it.
He murmured the title. “Communicating with the Dead… So you believe in that?”
“I don’t know what I believe. But this book mentions walk-in souls and—”
“I think I have Robert’s soul in my body,” he exclaimed before he could change his mind.
HB didn’t mean to interrupt her, but it just happened. He couldn’t help it. He watched as
Alison’s eyes rolled back, and she slumped over.
“Alison?” He patted her hand and then her cheeks until her eyes fluttered open. “How…” She looked confused. “Why? What?” She fell back on the couch. “I don’t believe it,” she said with a shake of her head, and her features turned stony. “I think you should leave.” “What?” HB cried. “No! No. I’m sorry!” Tears immediately filled his eyes. “I knew it was a bad time.” “What a cruel and mean joke to play on me after what I’ve gone through!” Her eyes flashed with anger, something he couldn’t pinpoint. “I’ll let myself out.” He jumped up. He’d blown it with Alison, and she didn’t want to believe him. And he might not have a chance to convince her.
About the Author
Sue writes five-star LitPick novels that keep readers of all ages turning pages long into the night. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, attending author events, or walking her dogs. She’s has two children and five grandchildren. Snack wise, Sue is a salty-type gal, but wouldn’t say no to an occasional chocolate kiss or two! She isn’t sure she’s a reincarnated novelist, but if she was, she’d want to be Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, or Emily Brontë. When her novels are run through author comparison sites, she gets Anne Rice through Mark Twain—quite a wide spread which makes for interesting reading (Tom Sawyer was a Vampire?).

The scent you say is no scent rises from warm ports between neck and shoulder. Scent that isn't witch hazel, vetiver, camphor, lemon, but is just your skin, raises a breeze on mine, unpredicted as freshness I found in woods where a few blond leaves hung from twigs. Sweet sharpness. Scent of something still to come, something soaked in— chlorine on the cedar deck your thigh presses, foot drifting in water; eyes' yellow amber behind closed lids. Soaked in like sun in the river whose cold silk wrapped your body in August, opened dark folds around you. Closed, opened, around you.

New Millennium Can’t Stop the Beat with Hairspray at Cedar Creek High School in Egg Harbor City, NJ
By Ricky and Dana Young-Howze
We all got a big welcome to the sixties at Cedar Creek High School with New Millennium Players’ Production of Hairspray. This musical adaptation of the John Waters cult classic was written by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan with Music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. It’s directed by all three Greater Egg Harbor drama directors and the performance is simply timeless to me!
All Tracy Turnblad has ever wanted was to be on The Corny Collins show. But the show’s producer, Velma Von Tussle, only wants a certain type of people on the show. Can she and all of the other “detention kids” finally make it to the paradise that they’re dreaming of? Well with the help of her parents Edna and Wilbur and one Motormouth Maybelle they just might!
This is the first time that I think I can say I saw some cracks in the usually seamless direction by the three Greater Egg Harbor Regional Drama Advisors: Kim Tunney, Chip Garrison, and John T. Stephan. I could really tell when an idea seemed like one director’s idea or when a scene had that director’s special touch. That said I really loved it. Hairspray has so little talking scenes that you almost have to treat it like an opera and that they did. They made huge stage pictures and always kept the cast moving. And just directing traffic of that magnitude is a skill in and of itself.
I always adore Stephan and Tunney’s choreography and you can really tell where each one of them put their own little touch on the numbers. It’s never a dull moment without a huge Stephan ensemble stage number or a Tunney number with hips swaying and toes tapping.
Okay I just wanna say right now that all of the actors gave me some hard decisions to make because they had so much talent and I have so little space. If we had the five hours needed I’d list everyone but we’ll have to stick to the people who I just couldn’t get out of my head when I woke up this morning. But I want to reiterate that every single person in this cast has something to be proud of.
I really think that the role of Tracy Turnblad (in this case played by Emily Tunney) is a very hard role. You’re playing a character that some people see in only one dimension: her size. There’s not often a time when there are more ways to do a character incorrectly than not. That’s why I really do applaud Miss Tunney and everything she did in this role. I can tell she really tried her hardest and made the role her own. I can’t even say that about the movie version of this character!
Edna Turnblad (played by Colin Luderitz) delivered a truly divine performance (bonus points if you see what I did there). You can tell that he really dived into the character and made it his. When you do this it’s really tempting to go way over the top and play everything for a gag without making a true character. But Colin truly delved deep and when I saw Edna onstage I saw a curvy wife and mother and not a man in drag.
Seaweed (played by Elijah Robertson) is another one of those characters where I feel like there’s more ways to do him wrong than right but almost from the beginning Dana and I were hooked. When Robertson looked to the audience and delivered his “In my house everyday is Negro Day” line I was floored! (Dana gives me that look of “you know I’m talking about” all the time!) And not only that he’s a remarkable dancer and a smooth singer.
I could watch the Motormouth Maybelle (played by Daryl McAllister) musical all day everyday when they finally get around to writing it and I’m telling you that when they do Miss McAllister needs to star in it. Those pipes of hers can be heard clear down the eastern sea board and I really think they were trying to rein her in a bit. She doesn’t just sing she saaangs!!!
Prudy Pingleton (played by Jenna Mullin) is a GTMS favorite of mine hitting the high school stage for the first time! I love a performer that I can hear from the cheap seats and her voice and energy at her age is remarkable! I can’t wait to see what she does in the future.
Link Larkin (played by Cody Tittermary) was a suave and smooth heartthrob and I feel like I finally got to hear his amazing voice take center stage. He also is just cute as a button in a suit with slicked back hair! You really need to come out and see him!
It’s so hard to not play Penny Pingleton (played by Rebekah Allebach) as a cardboard cutout. I was actually awed by Allebach’s performance. She really found something human in the character to latch onto and I just loved it so much!
Little Inez (played by Journee Chidi) was such a treat to watch. Her character might say “little” but she had a HUUUGE spirit and a wonderful stage presence. I couldn’t help but keep watching her in every stage number she was in. She’s a terrific dancer and a wonderful singer. More more more!!!
I am telling you that Mr. Pinky (played by Donovan Cruz) was a true delight! He just made me giggle when I saw him and he really made the most of his time onstage.
The Prison Matron (played by Scarlett McCourt) was just a laugh riot! I would definitely love to see her on the stage again!
Musical Direction by Brian Conover really leaned on those horns and I think it was the biggest pit band I’ve seen in a minute. I was also happy to see some alumni and regular students down there mixing it up. Some of them like Zach Gitto and Coby Alavez I hope I never see again because they should be going off to college soon and be moving off to bigger and brighter things!
I want to applaud the lovely costumes arranged by Kim Tunney and Ashley Winkler. I really could have wished for a “fat suit” (that’s what they’re called in the industry) that more complimented the bodies of our young performers and weren’t looking like they were made to just get a laugh. I know how hard it is because a lot of times costumes are borrowed from somewhere else or made off of an existing pattern. But both Tracy and Edna Turnblad are two body positive role models and I am always wanting something better for them even if I know that it’s not possible on a high school or community stage.
Gotta give a big shout out to set design by Mr. Ed Clark and lighting design by Peter Avagliano. As always a brilliant job!
What I love about this show is that it’s about not looking at the outside appearance but about the inside and what people do with their lives. I feel that in this world we are seeing this a whole lot more despite what we see on the news or elsewhere in the world. I know that we still have a whole lot of work to do but seeing a production like this where I see young performers of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds coming together to celebrate themselves is amazing! You have totally got to go see it tonight! You have one more chance left!

Ruby Ridge House, Wanaka
Ruby Ridge House, Wanaka Home, New Zealand, NZ Building, South Island Architecture, Photographs
Ruby Ridge House in Wanaka
3 Nov 2020
Ruby Ridge House
Design: Condon Scott Architects
Location: Wanaka, Otago region, South Island, New Zealand
With a bold mask to the suburban street, this house leaves all the pleasure for the people who reside within its walls. Located on an elevated site in a relatively new subdivision overlooking Lake Wanaka, the house is a place to privately and comfortably indulge in the extensive mountain and lake views the alpine town is known for.
Designed by Barry Condon of Condon Scott Architects, Ruby Ridge House is situated on a challenging, wedge-shaped site that borders two suburban streets. With a simple, mono-pitched roof and curve-edged, cedar-clad walls, the dynamic design directs the observer’s view towards the alpine panorama ahead, allowing the homeowners to enjoy their space without the sense of being overlooked.
“The Ruby Ridge site is bordered by suburban streets on two sides so we wanted create a design that would make the occupants of the house feel secure and not over looked from the street” says Barry Condon. “We also wanted to create some outdoor shelter as the site can experience strong seasonal on shore winds. To counter this, we have designed a series of internal courtyards so the occupants can retreat back into these spaces on windy days, effectively using the house as a windbreak whilst still maintaining a visual connection to the view.”
Two types of cedar cladding, with a dark and a warm stain, accentuate the lines of the windows and roof. Boardform concrete contrasts with the timber, and both materials spill into the interiors, providing a visual consistency inside and out.
The living space is configured around courtyards that are sheltered, private, and flow seamlessly from the interiors, with the body of the house providing both a windbreak and a visual barrier. Linked through stacking aluminum sliders, these courtyards are an extension of the living space and can be enjoyed year-round, with a boardform concrete outdoor fireplace for cooler nights. The front deck also flows easily from the living area, with the French oak floorboards appearing to merge with the Kwila decking.
Living spaces and bedrooms are located in the sun-soaked northern wing of the house, where the view is at its best. In the southern wing, the architect has located the garaging, guest bunkrooms and ancillary spaces.
“It was a challenging site to work with, but we knew the view would be paramount to the design,” says Barry Condon. “From the moment of entry into the foyer at the rear of the house, the space compresses and you are drawn through into the living room, with your eye focussed on the mountains and lake beyond.”

monday: joyce wasn’t there, so i did trash at st mary’s, then trash at holly and watering infield at holly and watering bocana, then mobile route, then returned to st mary’s and hedged the salvia out front. looks acceptable. if i really wanted to fix it i would have to like, cut it back real real hard so that it could grow normally cuz right now it’s incredibly dense in one section probably because it was reaching for sun and it’s under the cedar

went home on oshaughnessy worked on arch homework
tuesday: i called out cuz there was the all-staff and i didn’t care and also i had to finish my homework for arch100 also it was a depression day but i picked myself up off the ground (easier to say that now that i’ve picked myself up) because they told me that both bv and harding had 0 openings and i went into freakout mode because i tend to overreact to bad news and i just spiraled real hard into “why do i do anything if i can never have the things i want” hahahahahah sounds funny only in hindsight. when it’s happening it’s not funny.
anyway then i finished my presentation in the midst of all this angst, and it was a terrible presentation, and biked to class in spite of my depression, and printed out my stupid project three times because i had the wrong settings twice, but which actually looked kinda legit due to the terrible print job, and gave a terrible presentation and then biked home feeling better because class was kinda fun and i enjoyed other people’s presentations and the discussion we had.
also then it was time to go to potato’s birthday dinner with potato and xo which was fun because despite all my resistance to seeing others when i’m depressed, i always have fun with people i love, and i truly love potato and xo even if i think that i don’t want to see them we ate pretty good food (amazing bread-items, butter, bone marrow, broccolini, and pork ribs, mediocre beef tartare and fried chicken) at wayfare tavern, and i biked there in a tank top and black jeans and heels (ie my “i feel hot and im going out” look) so i felt pretty good. also i rode like the wind on the gangster which also felt good. and i went up california until fillmore and then i went up bush and then i went over on polk back to california which was a dumb idea because after larkin is that fuckin downhill with tram tracks and it’s scary so i got off at like, taylor and walked myself down like a chump but that’s ok because safety first. and i wuz not gonna footbrake in these heels. and i could not skid because. idk. fear. fear’s the only reason u can’t do things. i really believe this.
wednesday: kendra wasn’t there; mobile route by myself! and then line trimming the CPA, and then irrigation with stan which was fun. stan is like the fun brother i never had. everyone i like is like the fun brother i never had. also when i was trashwalking, i saw hellllllla raccoon damage and i was like ok we needa investigate station 1, and then when i was line trimming the CPA i saw a random nozzle in a mound of dirt and i was like hmm what is going on here why’s there a mound of dirt and i touched the nozzle and it just came out of the head so i was like welp gotta investigate and maybe replace and i thought i was mad slick for identifying irrigation problems that had to be dealt with then at the end of the day i saw that kendra had already identified those and wrote them down on the todo list she wrote for us that i failed to look at carefully

then i biked home on oshaughnessy and did my article report real fast and then class was canceled so i went to dd to ask about stem and show off my 1x centurion but also i’m not that stoked on it so now i’m like why did i try to get into road bikes again when every time i know i don’t want it
thursday: AAD at botanical i thought i would be like “idgaf get me outta here” but actually it was awesome HAHAHAH and the more i think about it, the more awesome i remember it in my head also how could it ever be bad working with jason
LM - 8
also here’s my search history from the past week; it made me laugh even though it’s not funny
friday: mobile route chill finished at 8:42, then put everything away (i forgot my pickup stick at prentiss because i set it on the ground to wash it and then was in a rush to leave because moped man whose moped that i parked next to told me that his wife was about to leave and needed me to move slightly forward because i was blocking the garage and i got all flustered and jumped in the truck and drove outta there) but uh. that’s. lost forever. maybe. most likely. i’m sorry. i forgot about it until i returned to st. mary’s and then i didn’t want to go back for it because. i’m sorry. i should have. after that i went to holly and pushed back the rosa banksiae and berberis wilsoniae(?) and ceanothus...weeping form... on the sides of murray entrance. it was good. i think it looks much more open. joyce said it’ll grow back within a week. after that we returned to st. mary’s and i hedged the small salvia cube in front of the rec center and also the ivy because that was on the to-do list. i did not plan my debris pickup well so i kept having to drive back and forth to the truck to dump my burlap out because bad at planning, and then stan jumped in to help me because i guess he was getting anxious about putting the toro away and also i was being inefficient.

after work i biked home via oshaughnessy because that’s what i do now also listening to mozart all day today ate some peanut butter and chocolate and then kale hardboiled egg (perfectly done; no greengray) quinoa ROASTED PEPPERS a million cups of milktea then rode out to race to reg via california to post (my old consulate commute) to kearny to sansome race to reg - allegedly came in 2nd women but who knows how many overall. somewhere between 20 and 30 most likely lol
now i sleep cuz i am tired
