Filipino Priest Who Defied Duterte Passes Away
Tumblr media
Fr. Amado Picardal, a Redemptorist priest who exposed killings by the so-called Davao Death Squad in the Philippines, died on Wednesday at age 69. Colleagues said Father Picx, as he was known, died from cardiac arrest in Cebu province, where he had been living a life of solitude and silence as a hermit.
Picardal was one of the first to sound the alarm about extrajudicial killings in Davao City on the southern island of Mindanao in the late 1990s and 2000s. This was long before the International Criminal Court (ICC) would investigate killings committed during President Rodrigo Duterte’s “war on drugs” as alleged crimes against humanity. Duterte, the longtime mayor of Davao City, was elected president in 2016 and modeled his abusive anti-drug campaign after Davao City’s.
Picardal was instrumental in helping the media and human rights organizations document the killings. The Coalition Against Summary Executions, which he helped found in 1999, played a key role in the research that led to Human Rights Watch’s 2009 report exposing the death squad. Picardal also assisted human rights groups submit information to the ICC.
Picardal helped activists, labor leaders, Indigenous peoples, and other victims of rights abuses for decades. During the Ferdinand Marcos Sr. dictatorship, he was arrested, jailed, and tortured for his work. Aside from being a prolific writer, blogger, columnist, and poet (he posted a poem online hours before his death), Picardal also walked, ran, and biked across the Philippines and Europe to bring attention to human rights.
After accusing Duterte of serious crimes, Picardal said his life was in danger, forcing him briefly into exile abroad before he returned to Philippines in 2018 to build his hermitage in the mountains of Cebu, where he lived until his death. When I last visited him in 2022, he said that he was still receiving threats but remained unafraid.
“I choose not to be silent, I choose to speak up and denounce evil in our midst. If it means [being] picked up, imprisoned or gunned down, so be it,” Picardal wrote in a blog post in 2006. “I am not afraid to suffer.”

This recipe is called Banana Cheese Rolls and Balls where you need to boil the Saba Banana and mash. After it cools down, it needs to be formed into like balls and rolls.
It was discovered and famous here in Cebu, and many people like it as a Filipino snack, they love to eat this kind of food because Banana Cheese Rolls and Balls are something rare to taste not just like other Saba Banana snacks such as Panaypay, Ginanggang, Banana Cue, and others which are purely all made with Bananas but with this new Banana Cheese Rolls and Balls it has a cheesy and creamy taste because of the cheese inside of the rolls and balls. Others also put melted chocolates instead of cheese. So far, it was the best recipe that was made in Cebu.
They found it delicious especially for those who love to eat snacks with crunchy banana rolls and balls. The cost of Banana Cheese Rolls and Balls is also affordable in which its target market is lower and middle-class people as they can easily make and buy them. Filipinos love to make small businesses because it was known here in place of Cebu that Banana Cheese Rolls and Balls are really appetizing.
As a Cebuano Blogger, I want to share and admire this recipe by promoting it through the internet and becoming one of the most delicious snacks here in the Philippines, people must be excited to taste and crave to eat this special it is one delicacy from Cebu.
Ingredients of Banana Cheese Rolls and Balls:
½ Flour
1 Cup Baking Powder
1 kg Banana
2 Cheese
Bread Crumbs
½ Liter Oil

Hey everyone👋
Here's a message sharing and reviewing the beauty of Osmena Peak:
I recently had the incredible opportunity to visit Osmena Peak, and I must say, it was an absolute marvel of nature! Located in Mantalongon Dalaguete Cebu, Philippines. Osmena Peak is a true gem that will leave you in awe.
As I made my way to the summit, the panoramic views unfolded before my eyes, and I couldn't help but be captivated by the stunning landscape. The rolling hills, covered in a lush carpet of vibrant green grass, stretched as far as the eye could see. It felt like stepping into a postcard-perfect paradise.
What makes Osmena Peak truly unique is its distinct cone-shaped formations, resembling the famous Chocolate Hills of Bohol. The peaks rise majestically against the sky, creating a breathtaking sight that's hard to put into words. It's a sight that truly deserves admiration and appreciation.
During my visit, I also had the pleasure of witnessing the unique form of chocolate kisses from Osmena Peak, and let me tell you, it was a spectacle I will never forget. It was a moment of pure serenity and tranquility, as if time stood still.
Beyond its visual appeal, Osmena Peak offers a haven for hikers and adventure seekers. The trails leading to the summit are well-maintained, providing an enjoyable and rewarding trekking experience. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a beginner, the journey to Osmena Peak is worth every step.
If you ever find yourself in Cebu, I highly recommend adding Osmena Peak to your itinerary. It's a place that embodies the raw beauty of nature and leaves a lasting impression on your heart and soul. Prepare to be amazed by its breathtaking views and be reminded of the wonders this world has to offer.
Remember, take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints, and cherish the memories of Osmena Peak forever. Happy exploring!"

Must-Visit Islands in The Philippines for Adventure Travelers
Must-Visit Islands in The Philippines for Adventure Travelers  The Philippines, with over 7000 tropical island gems scattered across the archipelago are a true adventurer’s playground. While 7000 islands sound like an almost inconceivable number, I was initially shocked to find out that the true record was held by none other than… Sweden! In fact, the Philippines only runs in at a measly 7th place in the world’s island-tallying rankings. Number’s aside, we’re honestly more excited about vivid tropical reefs, coconut palm-lined beaches, and epic volcano hikes than cold-rocky outcrops – the maxim law of “quality over quantity” seems to appropriately rule the roost here. So, sorry Björn, we’re going island hopping in the Philippines! 1. Cebu Cebu - Must-Visit Islands in The Philippines for Adventure Travelers: Where in the world can you find epic canyoneering adventures, exquisite diving conditions, and incredible jungle waterfalls? Well, I can think of a select few places, but none are as epic and adventure-filled as the island of Cebu. With an international airport, its very own backpacker town, and well-maintained roads and transport, Cebu is also as accessible an adventure location as any. 2. Malapascua Malapascua - Must-Visit Islands in The Philippines for Adventure Travelers: Famous among scuba divers worldwide, Malapascua is located a short Bangka ride away from Northern Cebu. People flock from far and wide in hopes to get an up-close and personal underwater view of the incredible Thresher Sharks, who call the island home. The popularity of the Thresher dives has thrust this tiny Filipino island into the adventure travel limelight as of late. If you’re into diving, snorkeling, or anything to do with marine life, add Malapascua to your Philippines island-hopping itinerary. You won’t regret it. 3. Siargao Siargao - Must-Visit Islands in The Philippines for Adventure Travelers: On the eastern edge of the Filipino archipelago lies the surf and smoothie-bowl capital of the Philippines. Many say that Siargao is a glimpse of what Bali used to be, just with better waves. Even non-surfers will have a hard time checking off all of the epic things to do here. Cliff jumping, caving, rock pool exploring and palm swings are a taste of the adventure that Siargao has on offer. 4. Surigao Surigao - Must-Visit Islands in The Philippines for Adventure Travelers : Suri-what? Surigao is Siargao’s brother, known for wild lagoons that look like something straight out of a National Geographic magazine. Although Surigao is not as accessible or developed as Siargao, it’s easy to organize an island-hopping day trip to explore the gems of Sohoton Cove and the iconic stingless-jellyfish lakes. 5. Apo Island Apo Island - Must-Visit Islands in The Philippines for Adventure Travelers: If you’ve never swam with a turtle before, you might even leave this place bored of it. Just kidding, how could you be? Apo Island is a tiny 34-square-kilometer paradise off the coast of Negros. Complete with sunset viewpoints, pristine coral reefs, and more resident turtles than you can count, Apo Island is a must-visit destination for anyone! 6. Palawan Palawan - Must-Visit Islands in The Philippines for Adventure Travelers Honestly, what list of best islands in the Philippines would be complete without Palawan? Jurassic limestone cliffs tower out from the bluest water you’ve ever seen and are crowned with jungle and palms. Palawan Island is an adventure lover’s paradise. Snorkeling, cliff-jumping, jungle hikes, island-hopping adventures, and more await on the island of Palawan. So, what are you waiting for? More Adventures in South East Asia I hope this roundup got the tropical juices flowing. For more free adventure travel guides, including in-depth and location-specific articles, you can find them on my website. via Blogger https://ift.tt/tILdCPW March 16, 2023 at 11:00PM

Tokyo, Japan | Food
Every trip Dennis and I go to we make ‘eating as much food as possible’ the highlight of our trip but as I stated before this trip was more about work and we honestly didn’t eat as much food as we hoped. Since the heat was more excruciating then anything we consumed juices, alcohol and water more than we ate. Japanese food is our favorite type of cuisine so I was sad that we didn’t eat more of it but when we did eat get a chance to eat we went a little crazy, haha.
There’s a lot of places to eat in Tokyo and everything is really good, even the convenience store food is good! The 2 things we really look forward to eating in Japan is sushi and ramen. The most affordable sushi in Japan is the conveyer belt sushi restaurants and the Genki restaurants. The conveyer belt sushi has sushi just going round and round and you just grab what you want when it passes by. The downfall about these restaurants Is you don’t know how fresh the sushi is since it just keeps rotating and you don’t know what it is unless you can read Japanese but other than that they are really cool and popular in Tokyo. The Genki restaurants are chain restaurants they are located all around Asia like the Philippines and Singapore to name a few. The Shibuya branch seems to be the most popular so if you go during lunch or dinner be prepared to wait for around 15- 30 mins (depending on the line). What’s cool about the Genki restaurant chain is well first, its super affordable and the touch screen menu has an English version and you can see pictures and a description of the plates. Since the plates are small you can try a lot of different things. The menu is pretty big as well so everyone in your group is sure to find something to eat. The one complaint I have is that they didn’t give me the right change when I was paying, I’m not sure if it was on accident or if they just tried to over charge me because I looked like a foreigner. After a little bit of complaining (she seemed annoyed that I knew the currency so well) I finally got the correct change, since I’ve been to Japan before I’m really good with the currency and I know the payment system so I found out she was overcharging me right away, maybe most people don’t notice when they are in foreign countries because they aren’t sure about the currency but I always try to know the currency before I travel somewhere new so I won’t get scammed.
We only had ramen once on this trip because the heat was so intense ramen really didn’t seem like a good idea, so we had it inside a mall where it was nice and air conditioned and at night when the temperature wasn’t so bad. There’s tons of ramen places but our go to is Afuri, there’s a couple of locations in Tokyo, just google it haha. We like this one because its good obviously but you also don’t have to worry about the language barrier because you order the ramen through a ticket machine and there’s pictures and prices so you won’t get confused and you’ll get exactly what you want.  You simply press the button of the ramen you want, pay the vending machine, the machine gives you a receipt and you give the receipt to the server and they serve you the ramen in about 5 mins.
Dennis and I agreed that the meal we had the night before we went back home was our favorite meal of the whole trip. Dennis really wanted to go inside a small restaurant that only had about 8 stools but looked super authentic. I said no because I was super intimidated because everyone inside was in business suits and there was no foreigners and we couldn’t read the menu because it was all in Japanese. We went walking for about 20 more minutes and couldn’t find anything we both agreed to eat so I finally said yes to the restaurant Dennis first saw and I’m so happy I did! The food was delicious. The meal was a traditional Japanese set meal (called: teishoku) the set include a fish or meat of your choice with rice, miso and pickled veggies (we added a shot of sake and beer for only 100 yen I believe, that’s like 1 USD or 44 pesos), The meal was so fresh and delicious, sad that we only found out about it on our last day. For the 2 meals (I had salmon, Dennis had sea bass) and 2 shots of sake and 2 beers we spent only 1800 yen ( around 17 USD or 870 pesos).
If you plan on going to Tokyo, my advice is don’t go with a food plan, just try as much things as possible and don’t be afraid to try new things, you never know what you’ll end up loving.
