Portugal Day 0

Trying to blog as I go instead of a year later. Since already started by live-blogging my getting to the airport stress.

Smooth sailing once I got on my plane and landed nice and early for long layover in Newark.

I head up to the United lounge since I recently got a United cc that comes with two passes a year and when better.

I felt comically out of place at first, those lounges are so bougie! And they are constantly cleaning it’s wild. I used the buffet for dinner which was mostly just okay, although the cheesecake brownies were divine. Plus they had some purple furniture and a purple book so I settled right in.

Sadly the lounge closed at 10:30 so then I had to head off to my correct terminal. They had a shuttle to go between them, instead of needing to leave and re go thru security. But I kind of felt like I was t supposed to be there. Like just look at this door I entered thru! And the shuttle is one way to that terminal but still.

The terminal is very small and not very nice and it is a very long layover. Made longer by the fact that daylight savings time kicks in tonight and my flight leaves on the SECOND 1:35am (which results in a hilarious announcement and mass confusion and exasperation)

And then to Portugal!

The english in the qsmp is dull.

I have been noticing this for a while and, talking to my non-english speaker friends (unlike myself), some have already distanced themselves from the server content because of this.

the idea of the qsmp is a global server, but this shouldn't be based soly in their nationality, but also the languages spoken in the server. And recently all we've seen is english being spoken 24/7, and of course this comes from the ease of comunicstion and speed, but we have a PERFECTLY good translator for that.

what frustated me more recently in purgatory was that, despite brigging AMAZING dynamics between the players, it reduced completely the spoken languages to english again. Because of the mini-events and distance that the creators are from each other, making the tool of amazing and automatic translation useless since it doesnt translate from a distance. And don't get me wrong, even quackity himself said he noticed he was doing more lives in english because of the "nature of the event".

When the owner of the server says this you see the problem.

bagi is the pov I watch the most after my main (cellbit and morning crew) and, my god, how i LOVE this pov for being a brazillian that, for hanging out by herself, usually can speak portuguese. It's a relief. A breath of fresh air in the middle of english in weight [idk if this is a expression in english, but it means 'a lot'] from every direction

only for her to get an egg that doesn't speaks her language.

don't get me wrong, em is lovely and i'm VERY happy that niki will be able to speak german with her daughter. But at the same time, the language she does lives in is english. Just like all the other mothers.

Would it really be that hard to find an adm from a country that speaks portuguese? it doesn't even have to be brazillian. Portugal, Angola, Guiné-Bissau, Cabo Verde, Moçambique, even Macau.

I GUARANTEE you that there is a lot of people that speak portuguese that would join the QSMP team with a huge smile.

It's just dull to have a participant that came to represent the brazillian language and culture and speak portuguese 100% of the time in live because her daughter doesn't understand her language [I feel like this also goes for Ironmouse].

And I'm not saying necessarily for the creators, but for the people watching.

I started watching qsmp because of the brazillian streamers that I like, obviously, but also because I LOVE the server's idea, the cultural exchange and the linguistic trade.

The language is the main aspect of any culture and the linguistic erasure >CURRENTLY< in the qsmp makes me sad.

I was watching the old vods and it's weird to notice that — at least the brazillians— used to speak more portuguese when the translator was worse than now that it works perfectly.

It's just a bit disappointing to see a project that was made to break linguistic barriers end up keeping them through the sovereignty of the english language.

(after that, I have NO issues with the cultural aspect. The cultural exchange is made with mastery.)"

brazil update: r/place edition!

brazil is going pretty strong. we have of course our flag, christ the redeemer with a capybara (rn its smoking weed), a toucan and our dear Louro José (the mascot of a really famous program here) and 5 stars for our 5 world cups. also the words on the flag, originally "ordem e progresso" (order and progress) its written "ordem e pau" (order and dick)

cellbit: cellbit and his community, on the right of the brazilian flag, have built the elements from Ordem Paranormal (his rpg) and also the logo and characters of Enigma do Medo (enigma of fear, his game!) (btw i recommend it. 2 seasons of it are subtitled in english and the game will come out in english too)

Normalmente eu tenho medo de falar sobre discurso sobre os ccs Brasileiros porque eu sou de os colónias de Portugal, mas eu também sou Portuguesa e posso ter alguma discriminação pra Brasileiros que eu não sabia, e todo isso é um pouco um problema de culturas differentes, mas eu mesmo não posso sou ficar silente sobre isso porque eu quase nei sabia sobre todo isso e pessoas merece saber sobre essa situação.

did you follow any mcyt in your language before starting to watch smps in english? I remember fondly a parody cover of they're taking the hobbits to isengard from the non-english duo I followed

I don't think so. We didn't have many Portuguese MCYT creators and I was never much into listening to Brazilian creators. We had Fer0m0nas when I was a kid but I didn't really watch him a lot. My brother did watch him a bit but even he didn't watch him that much.

A lot of them were really loud and chaotic which I never really liked that much. (It did get me a bit to get into Tommy even as an adult, for example... And I can't watch Tommy's vlogs even today, even if I love his Minecraft streams when he's with his friends). (Grian can be loud and yes he is chaotic but not in his video style or when he's speaking to the audience. The style is more laid back which I enjoy a lot more).

So no. I would've loved them if I had found some that liked but even today I have yet to see a real portuguese MCYT with content that is a bit more mature. And by mature I don't mean "says curse words and makes sexual comments" I mean has a content that is entertaining and maybe even educational without making you feel like you're watching something for a 6 year old.

Hermitcraft is an all ages series. It sometimes as more mature jokes but over they really are a PG (Parental Guidance) series that younger kids can watch but adults can very much appreciate too with great building, role playing that isn't too dense and plenty of choices for a creator you want to watch. The Dream SMP which I also loved is not an all ages series.... Even if there were definitely a lot of kids watching.... but had the guts to explore difficult and mature topics like depression, abuse and others (and did them mostly right... Except for the ending of course). You also have a lot of choices for creators. For solo people I watched Fundy a lot even before the big Dream SMP stuff because I love the doing weird things with Minecraft via programming. I also watch PhoenixFC and there's some others with this type of content I enjoy.

I have also never seen a Portuguese MCYT that is a woman. I know there are Brazilian women MCYTs but portuguese? I've never seen one. It's also really difficult to find Portuguese creators. I did a search for Portuguese streamers on Twitch and I couldn't find a good list or commentaries by anyone. The only way I manage to find Portuguese streamers is by following RTP Arena AKA the Esports staff of the Official National Portuguese Television or occasionally one streamer appears in a Portuguese YouTube channel dedicated the European Youth matters which is most likely related to the Erasmus+ programme and makes some interviews with various young adults.

The lack of the organisation of the Portuguese streaming and YouTube community makes for a more challenging experience for the viwers who have to do work if they want to actually find someone they enjoy.

There's also the fact that since a lot of us speak English fairly well we may do content in English which again— makes things difficult if I want to find you. And sometimes I want to hear Portuguese from Portugal you know?

I once had to research Portuguese Content creators of various categories for an organisation and the pain I had to find good gaming stuff... you have a decent shooting games CCs but for any other types of games? Well, if they exist they're not easy to find. There are some variety game streamers there's very few belonging to just a gaming community.

All this to say: gamers portugueses organizem-se porfavor. E se calhar comecem a publicar videos de Minecraft que eu quero vê-los e ninguém os faz 😭

I think the language Dream will struggle the most to find ccs is Portuguese, because there aren't many big Minecrafters ccs in Brazil/Portugal, maybe in other Portuguese speaking countries but I don't know much about the ccs from those. I'm praying to every god out there that he messages the OG Brazilian Minecrafters (JazzGhost would do amazing builds please) so they come back with the game a bit, but that's just wishful thinking on my part 😔
