30 Sickos, 3.5 Stars, and Pervert Writers
As I gear up to publish Detente for the Ravenous, I've been thinking a lot about these tweets. I know that my writing is solid, but it's not groundbreaking. My designs are fun, but they're not revolutionary. My prose is simple, my plots well-trodden. The fights and monsters kick ass, but god help me my romance is milquetoast at best. It's not what I'm interested in. I'm interested in the 30 years war and Catholic kaiju.
We like to quantify things, online. When I'm shopping for games, I sort by "most popular" and "highest rated." I don't want my time to be wasted, I don't want to spend my money sub-optimally. It's easier to connect to folks over a movie that 3 million people watched as opposed to a podcast listened to by a few hundred. I am not criticizing the impulse. Life is too short, and none of us have enough money.
But as a creator, whatever that means, I think I have to get comfortable with my shortcomings, and be honest about what I actually care about. I am not interested in writing a novel that appeals to all people. I am interested in writing a novel where they assassinate Pope Kissinger. That doesn't mean I won't ever try to improve my romance, or make my character arcs less predictable. But if I am gonna write another book, I have to write it for me, not for my imagined literary agent or Big 5 editor.
There's this great manifesto on itchio by “Average Urotsukidōji Enjoyer," called "Good Writers are Perverts." It touches on this sentiment that I've been stewing on, and I think this passage crystalizes what I'm trying to do with my own work.
I know my best work is the work of the pervert, the ex catholic who grew up on Naruto, the military history dork who trained for years to save lives instead of taking them. That is the stuff that makes me want to create, the hope that I can take all my stupid interests and life experiences and twist them into something at least partially interesting, to hit that 3.5 star rating that isn't all things to all people, but is at least one really good thing to a few people. If a handful of young folks get ahold of my work and it changes their lives in a small way forever, then I'll be happy.
I hope that as art becomes less profitable, as financial incentives only encourage the bland and inoffensive, the tried and true instead of niche and experimental, more artists double down, go deep instead of wide. I'm not afraid to fail, I'm afraid of trying so hard to be loved that I stop giving a shit about the craft

Took me a while to learn just how much more eyes and scrutiny my blog has gotten, which is not entirely a bad thing. I just had to learn to be more responsible with my thoughts and to take a lot more effort than an average person before saying something because the damage I can cause with the amount of eyes and pressure on somebody's mental health, or to political movements, by simply making a post in 30 seconds on a emotional impulse, its difficult learning and adjusting to this.
While I am wis and I am a person behind this blog, this blog isn't me, it's my persona i use to represent myself and my art. And while you know a lot more about me from just reading my posts than I know about you, it still hurts all the same when people get mad at me and criticize me, often rightfully so and I appreciate when people tell me off and let me broaden my horizons and make me realize just how unchallenged and deep rooted some of the bigotry of being raised in a catholic country can cause.
I know when people criticize me and tell me off and get angry at me for saying something really stupid it isn't a response that stems from hate, if you fuck up next to somebody that hates you, all they do is get smug and annoying and just rub it in. Rather, it's a response of being disappointed, disappointed in somebody you look up to and being angry that they could say something like that, lots of people come to me with good faith arguments, some of them don't, i appreciate the people patient and kind enough to explain things to me, and to the angry and loud ones. While there's nothing more annoying than being insulted and berated, at least it lets me know I said something stupid.
All of this said though. Fucking up and changing your mind and saying dumb misinformed bullshit it is part of life for everybody with no exceptions, and the response of so many people getting angry at you gets overwhelming, even if in good faith. And while for people with no platform this isn't a huge issue, if you have thousands of eyes looking at you that awful feeling of hurting someone you care about and love it gets amplified and it really can make you try to fix everything and stress out about it. As hard as it is, sometimes you just gotta let people be mad at you, they have their right to do that and learning and growing isn't about appeasing anybody, rather it's about understanding and learning and studying how to be better for the world.
This isn't a response to any drama or admission of guilt or anything, this is just my thoughts on being popular and how it affects life. Nobody asked me to write this or even was remotely on my ass, I just wanted to talk about a change in my life and the way I use this platform.

Disagreeing with individual people online (outside, like, Lesswrong) always makes me feel queasy, like I'm doing something wrong. In theory I can just concisely and politely say why I disagree and move on, but that falls so short of the kind of respectful intensive dialogue I want. There's little chance of our changing each other's minds or understanding each other. So in practice it's largely for my own satisfaction, or to persuade the audience, which are reasons I find kind of disgusting. It makes me feel the way I think Catholics feel about sex. Posting a disagreement to relieve internal pressure is like masturbation, and posting a disagreement to add a microgram to my side of the scales in the broader culture is like having extramarital sex. There's one thing (my intuitions insist) that disagreement is FOR, which is to make... BABBY... out of true good faith and synthesis
And I feel like such a sucker for believing this, I don't live in a world where it's "adaptive" to think this way
There's so much to disagree with, so I'm horny all the time for disagreement... ass shots whizzing past my dashboard all the time, fraying at my self control...
And when I do disagree it's when I'm low on impulse control, or particularly frustrated, so I fall shorter than I would on good days, which are the days when I have the willpower to not engage at all
I feel like an incel Catholic who's given up on finding a loving spouse to start a family with, and mostly interacts with sex when they snap from stress and go on OnlyFans to jerk off to a stranger, and afterwards they feel sick and weird and abandoned by god

How is everyone else wrong about Roderich?
-@iron--and--blood
To be honest, my first impulse when I saw this ask was to answer something along the lines of "doesn't everyone think they're the only right person about their blorbo?" But, since you are asking sincerely, I will try to answer sincerely.
My reticence to discuss why I think other people are wrong is more or less coming from my long term experience in this fandom, which I would sum up as "everyone loves you for providing historical tidbits until you want to tell them that their personal favorite headcanon is wrong." I've had far too many people switch from an interest to "it's not that serious/I don't care about historical accuracy" on me over the years. I keep threatening to write a reflection post about how the experience of going from being a person who is interested in history to an academic studying history really soured my experience of the fandom in ways I could not have anticipated, and maybe some day I actually will. But for now, this isn't that post.
Which is a long-winded way of saying don't let what I'm about to say yuck your yum. And if it does, please don't yell at me about it.
Alright, I think a lot of the way people write PruAus especially do not take Roderich particularly seriously. There is a lot, and I mean a lot, of content that more or less makes him arrogant for the sake of humbling him or making him look comically inept. There's a lot of "he gets his ass kicked and gets seduced by Gilbert."
From a historical perspective, this has got to be coming from a lack of interest in Habsburg history or having only seen the several decades old view that the Habsburg empire was a backwards repressive state fated to fall apart. And that is not the view in any scholarship published in the last ten years or so with one notable exception that I can think of, which had to twist itself into knots to avoid its own contradictions.
And look, professional historians in other fields are regularly bad at discussing the Habsburg empire too. This isn't a fandom specific issue.
To really enjoy someone's take on Roderich, I need them to be taking seriously that he was a Great Power. The Catholic bulwark in the early modern period. The biggest power in Europe when he was married to Spain. The architect of the Concert of Europe. Someone with a rigid court structure and an unmatched sense of grandeur.
He may not be able to fight one-on-one particularly well, but be assured that he is a diplomat par excellence. I need him to be intelligent and witty and capable of negotiating his enemy into a corner when he needs to. He has a skill set that no one else can replicate as well as he can, and he uses it to his advantage. I enjoy PruAus most when it is clear that they respect each other for having the skills the other lacks.
In my opinion, he's at his best when he's using his charm and intelligence to work around his physical limitations. Sadly, the fandom has committed to "uptight and stuffy" in a way that would just not work with his actual track record of marrying his way out of problems.
And anything that makes him out to somehow be the one with less charm or sexual experience than Gilbert of all people is pretty much an immediate no for me. If he can't be forward and confident with his bedroom politics, I'm not that interested.
Also no one else ships him with Poland so it's just me in my corner, but ask me about that in a different ask if you want details.
#not tagging with the character#to avoid the aforementioned yelling at me#I'm rather sorry for being a cranky old lady#I've just found its hard to find anyone in this fandom that wants to talk about history seriously

monday drop : yappy ass descriptions of frequent fronters
hi its ari so im gonna drop a bunch of descriptions based on what i know about frequent fronters (the ones on our carrd) and i hope this comes out as non-biased. also quick reminder: this is meant to give info but also spark questions since im probably providing minimal context in these descriptions. if something is confusing to you or if you want to know about anything, drop any questions in ask box
(also this is just batch one because a lot of our frequent fronters arent really confirmed with “yes this person will 100% be around.” i will probably reblog with future batches (5 alters at a time) as we gain more if that makes any coherent sense)
stefano - honestly the best descriptor i can use for him is that he’s a handful. my first interaction with him was almost a year ago, way before he grew his hair out or got his eye fixed or whatever, and he’s only gotten more and more energetic as the years go on. he’s incredibly impulsive, down for anything, and he doesn’t think before acting. despite the.. lack of logical intelligence, he’s incredibly emotionally mature and is good at responding to vents or providing advice. on top of that, he’s also really good at computer science, physics, and biology. his religion is actually a huge curveball since most of our alters are athiest or pagan, but stefano is very devout catholic. despite his “less than ideal” thought patterns when it comes to thinking things out prior to acting, he’s very empathic and good at understanding where people are coming from. all of his interests typically seem very childish (sonic, pokemon, lego, etc) but it mostly makes up for lost time since he didn’t really get to engage in childhood media as a kid. and not going to lie, one of the best descriptions for stefano is “charming.” he’s friendly, talkative, and easy to get along with. there’s quite literally no reason for anyone to fight with him because despite his impulsive nature, his actions aren’t typically that bad (but that may be because of faye’s damage control)
faye - that whole “behind every strong man is an even stronger woman” quote is the gospel truth when it comes to faye. she’s independant, self reliant, incredibly smart, and amazing at setting boundaries. i firmly believe that if you can get faye to approve of you, you can get anyone to. she’s typically very monotone and indifferent, unless she’s talking about something she really likes. she’s known for being kind of “glass half empty” and is generally very calm and collected. that is until she gets angry or overwhelmed. despite the endless positive things i could say about faye, and trust me that list is endless, she’s very easily overwhelmed and completely loses control when it happens. she can also be very tempermental and unfriendly or hostile to people she doesn’t know or trust. however, once you get to know her, she’s very mature and kind. or as kind as faye can be, since she has a tendancy to be very passive aggressive even with people she’s very close to. she isn’t very social and typically lets stefano do all of the talking for her while she handles academics. despite the fact that her temper can get the best of her, she tends to be very well thought-out and understanding most times. she is certainly a force to be reckoned with in my opinion
extra : faye and stefano - something to be noted about faye and stefano as a pair is that they compliment each other almost perfectly. 9 times out of 10, if one of them likes something, the other will hate it. (ie: faye loves reading but it will be a cold day in hell before stefano picks a book up.) this makes getting to know them an easier task than most think because if you know one of them for sure likes something, the other probably hates it and vice versa. the two are practically sun and moon
amia - amia is our longest standing co-host. she began co-hosting around october 2023. she’s energetic and cheerful, she talks a lot, and never stops asking questions. she’s known for how easy it is for her to bond with people and make new friends. back when lumi was still host, amia was a primary host and typically shined most brightly during social events, which she loves attending. if we were at a hangout during freshman year, it was probably amia fronting. she’s a good middleground alter considering her age isn’t too far off from the body’s (only about 6-7 months younger.) she’s amazing at elar and practically saved our grade more times than i count. she was one of the first alters to actually get solid communication out of our tougher alters (herta, issac, lucine, etc) which shows that she’s generally good at communicating. a running joke in our system is the fact that amia practically walks up to random strangers as if she’s known them for years and starts conversations off the top of her head, which is something that most of us struggle with due to social anxiety which apparently skipped amia. she doesn’t struggle at all with anxiety or depression like other alters do which makes her a unique case, but regardless, she’s a ball of energy and is totally that one person who’s way too happy on a monday morning
junni - a relatively new edition, junni has only fronted once or twice prior to becoming a co-host. she’s generally very introverted and reserved in comparison to other alters in our system who are more talkative. she has a love for romanticizing life and generally puts a more positive spin on boring every-day tasks like homework or shopping. you can typically catch her napping or reading manga and though she isn’t the best at making conversation, she is a really fantastic listener. she’s utterly obsessed with our digital camera and photography in general. her role as destressor and soother give her interesting dynamics with our more high-strung alters who don’t know what relaxing is (cough stefano cough) that typically consists of her finding silly distractions or destressing activities for us to do. she’s a huge morning person and is typically awake by 6 am and in bed early. i don’t know all that much about her considering she is relatively new, but a good person to ask would be kaedyn if you catch her. the two of them have probably hung out in the mornings numerous times
evan - if you thought i didn’t have much to say about junni, this will be considerably worse. evan seemingly came out of nowhere, has an incredibly choppy source, and due to his withdrawn attitude, theres no way of knowing anything about him. while im almost certain evan has passions for whatever topics may interest him, he’s the last person to ever talk about them. he resists authority and the more you try to get him to do something, the less likely the posibility it will ever happen. evan is truly the represenation of an angsty teenager and we have yet to find out how to connect or communicate with him without being completely shut out because he “doesn’t feel like talking.” this doesnt make him a complete bummer to be around though since he’ll actually hold conversations or occasionally play games with other people when he feels comfortable, its just that absolutely no personal information comes out of him. he obviously feels more comfortable talking about other people’s lives rather than his own which is fair in my opinion

Well, I hope you don't mind but I would like all your thoughts on the Charlot/priest incident in The Charioteer. In particular, is it the beginning of the end for Laurie and Andrew, or a sign that their relationship is actually growing in strength?
Thanks for the ask! I do enjoy these excuses to go back and read this book. So! I went into this remembering the scene as kind of a low point for those two and was reminded very rapidly of how brutal it was lol. Like yeah, Laurie's getting pissy at Andrew cause he is kinda being a useless. (To which I'm forced to say, yeah fair, but what are you expecting out of a 19 year old blond twink, laurie? They're not exactly known for their usefulness) Then he realises that one thing he's come to really love Andrew for (his tendency to slip into a quiet thoughtfulness) is not something he can rely on when times get Real - probably especially for a relationship. There's this bit in my notes where I went fully stream of consciousness mid-sentence that made me laugh my ass off:
Much of this chapter has Andrew hurrying out of the room back and forth from somewhere else, the nurse, the laundry, whatever. I think this absence really gets to Laurie.
And then we get to the meat of the scene, where Laurie wants Andrew to impersonate the priest, since Charlot would recognise him if he tried to do it. It's a very… pragmatic idea, and rooted in compassion. All things very Laurie-core. But any semi-religious person would balk at the idea, I know my raised-catholic ass cocked a brow in surprise when I first read it. And unfortunately for Laurie, and perhaps Charlot depending on where you stand, Andrew is quite a bit more dedicated than just "semi". He declines, obviously.
Now, when Andrew starts standing up for himself and denying Laurie's frantic request to impersonate the priest (thrice! somebody fetch that rooster!) I was like… we're so back!! It's even stated how hot Laurie thinks Andrew is when he's putting his foot down like this. But I think the plaster's already been ripped off at this point, and Laurie's much too frustrated with Andrew. There's much difference between how the two are as people, and he's been quite forcefully shown that divide in this situation. He's already wished that Ralph was here in the scene like twice by now. That's where he's most comfortable: "Ralph would've understood."
After their row, Laurie does apologise but the damage is already done. Fwiw, I'm not very convinced by his apology, like I do think that he believed those things he said, he's just such a people pleaser that he wants Andrew to not be upset. Andrew's still hurt from all of that, though, despite saying, "It's alright" a couple of times. But he doesn't really know how to express it, so he goes for the o2 cylinder. There's some cool foreshadowing of Andrew doing violence with that. We're reminded how he's actually quite strong, and how he's said to be "attacking" the cylinder. And there's something Laurie sees on his face described as "something of a revelation", does Laurie see those latent impulses for violence there, which he can't express because of his beliefs? Ties in with the son of a soldier thing etc. Anyway, Charlot then goes unresponsive. Andrew leaves again, to get the nurse. When they're back, she scolds Laurie and orders him to bed - leaving him with no chance to talk things over with Andrew.
Now, the scene in the kitchen. On my first read through, I was so in shock from the kiss that I hadn't really absorbed what else was going on here: this reads like a breakup! This is such a breakup! Laurie's going away, the way it's worded… the vague promises of visiting again and staying in a farm nearby. The bittersweet reminiscing of the Mozart, which was originally what they thought was the oboe quartet, but Laurie misremembers it as a concerto. But then again, things have changed now, haven't they? That one line, "I've never known this place with you," gave me a head rush so strong I thought I had covid. And then he goes to call the Mozart piece, "One of those tunes that people have" [that they associate with a lover who's gotten away from them??], and I went visibly pale lol. And then that line about Dave moving to the east end, where the Blitz is in full swing? 'Does he have to do that?' 'He can go where he likes, he's years over military age. It's because of Cynthia, I know.' Andrew gave him a strange bewildered look and added, 'I know how he feels. No, that must sound stupid. I mean I--' Did he just compare Laurie moving away to Dave losing his spouse?? im gonna explode???
There's so much good stuff here, these two really are so sweet! It starts to feel like Andrew's coming around, he's almost ready to figure it all out, he's opening his heart to Laurie here. He trusts Laurie and only feels normal around him etc. And Laurie is even moved enough to kiss him, to enlighten him. Maybe it'd be a goodbye kiss, just like what Ralph did to him, all those years ago. Only, again, they're interrupted. It's not meant to be.
-- Random thots that i'm gluing onto the end:
There's a lot of this disconnectedness between the two that I've brought up before a hopeful laurie/andrew dreamer. They don't really get a chance to communicate here because Andrew has to go off and do things/get the nurse, and when they try to, they just end up fighting and not really resolving anything. Other things I noted down that tie into this theme - the line to the priest being cut, and no communication can get through, the nurse separating them, and then interrupting their kiss! Even Laurie's transfer kinda smoothly fits the idea on a larger scale.
Another thing I've brought up before is the whole "keeping Andrew in the dark" thing, which crops up here again. When they're talking about Ralph and what he'd did to get expelled in the kitchen, Laurie doesn't clue him in. Now obviously because it was quite the scandal, and he wanted to protect Ralph, but also he wanted to protect Andrew from learning about himself and not bring up anything gay! This is another of those times that people pulled the wool over his eyes.
Dont think I didn't notice Laurie purposefully avoiding sleep so that he can wait up in the dark just to get a chance to see Andrew, TWICE! That's my girl...!
A completely random thing to notice, but whatever, it's there. In this chapter, Charlot keeps getting these quite... animalistic descriptions in his appearance. His "thick chin", his "oxlike brown eyes," "blunt hands," "coarse, curly hair", (like a sheep? admittedly lots of reaching going on here), and his "animal state" giving Laurie the impression of "watching a dying dog". That last one of them is ALSO crazy because doesn't the wedding, where Laurie finds out about Gyp, happen after this chapter?????

I regretted not doing this before Dante's route so predictions/ headcanons/ observations before playing Gil's route:
ADHD
Impulsive gossip man cannot stay out of other people's business for the life of him (literally)
He has the kind of confidence that screams abusive father? Like Dante's dad definitely sucked but I feel like Gil's relationship with his dad was straight up volatile. If this is wrong a lot of these are gonna be wrong soooo
Either he had a really sweet mother who he was super close with or a group of friends in which he's The One Who Made It™
His eye either doesn't get mentioned because it's just ✨ asthetic✨ (disappointing) and we're supposed to just assume his impulsive ass got something exploded in his face or it's his dad's fault
He's a true Catholic boi and depending on how much otomate plans to continue writing about a religion they don't seem to completely understand in the best most entertaining way, I feel like as a true Catholic boi he's gotta have some religious guilt. He moves around and keeps busy all the time like he's trying really hard to not think about something. Imma bet he can't forgive his dad
I can also see him going to confession and arguing with the priest about how something he did wasn't actually a sin because ______
He's a flirt but I feel like he's going to be so careful ang gentle with Lili that it actually makes me cry and she'll be the first to make a move in a lot of situations. Like she's gonna kiss him first and he's gonna be like wait what

For both of em uwu 4, 14, 28, 30
4: If your Tav was a companion, where would they be found?
Crim would be at the ruined Jergal temple, on the little balcony. He can be either approached first, in which case he informs you that he overheard a group of mercenaries in the ruins talking about raiding the Nautiloid wreck and was just about to avail himself of their belongings. If the mercs are approached first and convinced to leave, Crim comes in afterward and suggests exploring the ruins together. If the mercs are engaged in a fight, Crim joins in to help.
Solstice is a bit of a latecomer... he is with Scratch, praying for the dead courier. Talking to him reveals he's been wandering the woods for a while (somehow avoiding every single person in there without realising it) and is feeling really very lonely and a bit worried about his worm at this point, but luckily he found this good boy. If Scratch is spoken to, he remarks that Solstice is a very nice new friend, but he's worried about him surviving on his own and perhaps it would be best if Tav adopted him.
-
14: What hobbies does your Tav have?
Crim loves reading. Non-fiction, primarily, but also porn. The lewder the better. Don't go through the bookstack in his tent unless you are mentally and physically ready. Beside that... can you call bathing a hobby? It's not really swimming because he prefers to just sit or float, but boy does he love being in water, especially if it's warm and scented.
Solstice does pottery. His favourite to make are saucers and bowls for drinking and generally anything made on a pottery wheel. He can also make little figurines (mostly animals, they are simplistic but cute), but he prefers the meditative movement of the wheel.
-
28: Is your character the de facto leader of the party? Or do they consider someone else to be the leader?
Crim shares leadership with his co-Tav, Kell (courtesy of Phex up there). They escaped the Nautiloid together, and started out with Crim leading the group, but once they entered the Underdark, Crim deferred to Kell instead since this was his home turf, and after that, they're equally guiding the party and driving the events forward.
Solstice is very much a follower. His co-Tav Eloryn (also Phex's) leads the group. Solstice is way too impulsive and guileless to lead a group like this through events like these.
-
30: What's your favorite thing about your Tav?
My favourite thing about Crim is that he's a perfectly sculpted catholic lucifer statue like so many spellcasters in the world of D&D, he is often skirting the line to Being A Bad Guy due to his insatiable hunger for magical knowledge and power, and his selfishness and recklessness associated with it... but he never once even touches that line due to his strong sense of morality and integrity. (And also because behind all that perfectly manicured and seductive appearance and complete confidence in his magic is just a scared and grieving circus boy from Rivington.)
My favourite thing about Solstice is that he is the archetypical himbo (which is not my normal OC type): he is pretty, he is beefy, he is kind and generous and he is extremely pure of heart and dumb of ass. There is something very relaxing about RPing him... make all the Good Boy decisions, expend no mental effort, enjoy the bite-able tiddy. None braincell with left beef.

I HAVE MADE ART AGAIN (Not x der zeit related so bear with me)
these guys are ooold vampire ocs from around 2010 or 2011 and last year i reread the few chapters of the story i made up for them and decided to completely redo everything and make new desings and all. i obsessively crafted a story for them for a few weeks, then forgot about them again for a year, and finally scanned them a few months ago, spinning the story some more and yeah. here we are. they are nothing more than a thought playground for me, i dont think ill ever write something with them but i like to play with them in my brain like little dolls. :3
as stated its a vampire story and the new titel is selfish monsters (which i made up on the spot admittedly lol but i kinda dig it) its generally about a little found family of vampires and humans who hunt and kill vampires they deem 'dangerous' (as in they kill recklessly or especially unethically yeah i know its a whole moral disaster). one day elaine, the leader of the group, encounters a comatose vampire boy and takes him in, waiting for him to wake up, and when he does almost 10 years later, he has no idea who he is or how he got into a coma and everyone tries to help him find out what the fuck is happening. yeah and from this point on, shenanigangs ensue. (^:
refs!!!!!
anne is one of the mentioned human vampire hunters of the group. she is an orphan and was taken in as a teenager by elaine when she lost her mom to a vampire who targeted sex workers. she swore revenge on said vampire and well …. got it in the end i guess. u_u anne is impulsive and witty but hides a lot of insecurities from being bullied as a teenager for … pretty much everything. being poor, being fat, having a single mom who did sex work, it was a whole thing. she is VERY opposed to the idea of being turned and made it very clear that when she dies she wants to STAY dead and guess how that works out,,
chris(topher) is the coma boy who doesnt remember who he is, where hes from, and who turned him and why, he doesnt even know how old he is, but after a while he finds out he was killed and turned by a cult leader in the late 70s whose goal was to resurrect jesus, but he disturbed the ritual and got into a fight with said cult leader which almost killed him again (undead version) but he fell into a coma instead. chris is filled to the brim with catholic guilt and bisexuality and cant stop helping people in danger. </3 (and biting lucas) he is also immune to crucifixes because his cult tortured each other so much with them that they became numb to the pain they inflict on them which yaaay!
lorelay is elaines best friend/right hand/girlfriend/soulmate/secret fith thing and she is a bitch ass tsundere goth girl who secretly cares about her shitty human brat sibling a lot and prides herself in being unnecessarily cruel. she is responsible for 'aquiring food' because elaine and chris both dont like to think about the fact that they have to kill to survive. she is the oldest vampire in the group, being turned in the early 1600s by an evil abbess who liked to collect pretty girls like dolls. if she is concerned for you she will throw you against a wall and yell at you. lovingly.
lucas is another human vampire hunter who got kicked out by his shitty dad for being trans and got picked up by elaine in the streets. hes a pretentious asshole who struggles with being nice, is annes best friend (later boyfriend), and acts insanely rude towards chris when he first wakes up, later discovering he just had a giant crush on him and didnt know how to act upon it,, he is incredibly horny for vampires and wants to be turned sooo bad or just bitten a lot please oh god somebody bite him and rip his clothes off and hhjassdjdgq,, he is a problem boy.
elaine is the group leader and and cant walk past an abandoned teenager without adopting them, sadly. she feels immense guilt about being a vampire and constantly tries to straighten it out by doing good things and helping people, hates thinking about what it means to kill to survive, and at the same time feels SO much anger towards humanity and surpresses her rage all the time which is. not good. she needs help tbh.
last but not least, magdalene the 2000-year-old-died-at-16 undead cult leader herself, who wants to resurrect jesus by stealing reliquaries from all over the world and performing a wittle necromancy on them,,, maggie says she just wants to bring back the messiah to free humankind but she actually. well. knew mr. christ personally in real life and misses him and doesnt know how to make other friends so. time to start a cult. <3 when getting new people for her cult, she targets already christian people in their late teens/early 20s and later assigns them the name of an apostle. everytime one of them dies, she find another one to fill their role. (chris was judas btw. it came as a real shock when he betrayed her. (^: ) she also kills anne which more or less forces chris to turn her to save her life because he couldnt stand the thought of losing her and well. its a whole thing.
yeah that was only a FRACTION of the extrensive vampire lore and story i have spun for them already but. if you have any questions i would love to be normal about them. :3c

OF COURSE - I should've done that in the original post tbh
TSCC is billed as a spinoff series after T2, when John Connor (Thomas Dekker) is a teenager. He and Sarah (Lena Headey) are targeted by yet another Terminator and then saved by a second Terminator, this time identifying herself as Cameron (Summer Glau). They end up jumping forward in time to 2007, where Sarah works to prevent the creation of Skynet. Early on in s1, they are joined by John's uncle Derek Reese. The second season also has SHIRLEY MANSON YES GARBAGE'S SHIRLEY MANSON playing a Scary Business Lady and do not look up anything about her if you want to watch this show because you will ruin a very cool reveal for yourself. If you like shows about robots learning how to be human, Lena Headey's buff arms, Lena Headey doing a lot of introspective voiceover monologues, Summer Glau as a cool scary robot throwing a bunch of bigger men around, and having your heart ripped out by one of the worst cliffhangers ever, you should absolutely watch this show because it whips ass. It is my biggest comfort show.
Daredevil is about the second messiest fictional polycule I've ever seen Matt Murdock, Catholic guilt personified, who by day is a broke blind lawyer with a heightened sense of justice and by night is Daredevil, who has a heightened sense of everything except self-preservation and does parkour to protect Hell's Kitchen, New York. There is also his best friend Foggy Nelson, who usually has the brain cell of the group but not always, and Karen Page, who gets framed for killing a guy and has a ~dark past~ the show only teases until season 3 when we get a whole episode about her (she also has zero sense of self-preservation). They are all in love but for some reason the show only let Matt and Karen kiss? MISTAKE. Hell's Kitchen is under the control of Kingpin, the giant scary crime lord who has done everything wrong but also I love him. AND THEN in season 2 Elektra, Matt's ex, comes in and she is THE BEST even though neither the fandom nor the show agrees, she is Matt's worst impulses personified and impossibly sad and sexy and one time they fuck in a gym and it's very hot. This show is also so incredibly violent which I enjoy, but just as a warning (like Kingpin smashes a guy's head with a bowling ball only kinda offscreen in episode 3).
If the above does not sound like your jam and instead you would rather watch a show about superpowered teens whose abusive parents are in various murder cults, try Runaways instead! This show made the bold choice of not actually having them run away until the s1 finale, which. maybe I wouldn't have done? but whatever. The point of this show is that every teen is the best and I love them all so much. We have: Chase, big of heart and dumb of ass but also good at making machines! (His dad is James Marsters, who is playing just the worst bastard you've ever seen.) Gert, who has purple hair and anxiety and is soulbonded to a genetically engineered Deinonychus named Old Lace! Molly, who is twelve and just doing her best and also has super strength! (She and Gert are foster sisters.) Alex, who is a big nerd (affectionate) and also very bad at people, but becomes the de facto leader regardless! Karolina, who is revealed to be a half-alien who turns rainbow and sparkly and also she can fly! All this AND SHE'S GAY! And Nico, who is Gothic and fittingly has control of the Staff of One and can use it to do magic! Their parents are also here and unfortunately there are a lot of parent scenes in this show, but you get used to it. I am very biased because I adore the comics and I think they did the best possible job of adapting the kids' personalities, if not the exact storylines, so I loved this show so much. OH they also did a crossover with Cloak and Dagger who I also love, so.
Deadwood is the best HBO show and the best Western. It's based loosely on the period when Deadwood, South Dakota was first established, up until and after the area's annexation, and the creators used a lot of historical records and documents in their research. There are 23847394 characters so if you don't like one of them, don't worry, there's bound to be somebody you do like! This is a show that both requires and demands your entire attention - absolutely not a background show because the dialogue is extremely dense, and if you aren't on top of things you will miss something important. The cast of this show is vast and basically anything you watch will have at least one Deadwood alum in it; it's a fun game to play! I don't know how appealing this show is to non-Americans but if you're looking for a really good drama, this is it. (Also, there are queer women and some of them survive and live happily ever after!)
Farscape is my personal favorite space show. The basic conceit is astronaut John Crichton accidentally gets sucked into a wormhole, commits space vehicular manslaughter and gets thrown into space prison, only breaking out with the help of a defected prison guard (Aeryn Sun) and some of his fellow prisoners (who are of course all aliens). It is so silly and deliberately stupid a lot of the time - one of the main characters is an alien who farts helium and yes it comes up a lot. That guy is also a Jim Henson puppet, as is the pilot of the ship, Pilot. Most of the main characters who are not John and Aeryn are painted silly colors because they are Aliens, and boy does the makeup look good. The show will yoyo between literally an episode that is a cartoon and some of the best drama you've ever seen, and the romance between John and Aeryn is stellar, pun intended. All the cuss words are space cuss words like frell and dren. It is also extremely horny - at one point they start being chased around by a guy in a leather gimp suit who has a habit of licking John's face sensually. OH and the ship is her own character and gets pregnant at one point and the baby ship is his own character too. Honestly, I feel like this one might be the most up your alley because sometimes it does feel very Warehouse.
Top 5 TV shows - metric of your choice (most comfort to watch, made/written the best, most fun to watch, mix of all of these, something else entirely; whatever you pick)
ooh love this! I will go with top 5 shows that I think have a consistent level of quality throughout, i.e. no weak seasons/arcs and not a point where there’s a noticeable downturn in quality. in no particular order:
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Daredevil
Runaways
Deadwood
Farscape

BART ALLEN OUTSIDER POV FIC PROMPT: WAIT WAS BART IN A CULT?
Bart Allen, only 13 years old, ends up getting enrolled back into school to learn about modern history to unlearn the Reach’s vastly altered version of history that he was taught and to connect with non-meta kids his age.
He goes to central city middle school after jumping back to the future. The students there quickly notice that the new kid is a very weird guy.
- Bart said he came from Keystone city yet can’t name a single thing about Keystone.
- Despite being a class clown, he’s weirdly serious about certain topics and asking anything about the future causes Bart’s eyes to glaze over for a second
- He doesn’t know anything about pop culture.
- When asked what his favorite movie was for his “get to know you question,” Bart responded that he didn’t watch a lot of movies. He responded similarly for every other icebreaker question. Including favorite ice cream where when he replied, “I’ve never had ice cream” cue the class erupting in commotion and disbelief that took the teacher 10 minutes to calm down
- He doesn’t know about current social media trends. As a few months of him in school goes by, it becomes apparent that he’s almost never up to date on current or past social media trends.
- He’s absolutely horrible at history outside of some recent metahuman & JL events.
- He doesn’t seem to know how school works. Like, a kid goes up to him and offers to do his homework if Bart pays her because she noticed he was struggling with history... and Bart acts very confused. “Isn’t that not allowed?” And that comment confuses the shit out of the girl trying to get money out of Bart and they eventually continue talking and agreeing on her tutoring Bart free of charge. After a while he opens up to her about having difficulties remembering which history is which when writing essays but refuses to elaborate, leading her to think that Bart used to go to a Catholic school.
- in the lunch room, Bart said he didn’t know who Lady Gaga was and it began a trend of kids asking if he knew who [celebrity] was & bets were placed on if he did or didn’t (Bart caught on quickly and educated himself on this the day he found out so he wouldn’t seem too out of touch. It was boring quickly so he stopped keeping up with celebrity gossip quick)
- When interrogated about his lack of knowledge in media, he said he lived an “isolated childhood” and was homeschooled until recently
- Eventually in the locker room, when changing people notice his scars (unknown why them but they’re the results of The Reach’s reign and enforcement of control over the metas)
And the middle schoolers put the pieces together: Bart escaped from a doomsday cult.
- and the rumor spreads like fucking wildfire
- That’s why he has the scars, they must have punished him for defying the cult! That must be why he escaped!
- That’s why he said he had an isolated childhood and “can’t remember which history is the correct one”
- That’s why Bart has to have the worksheets for the lower grades given to him during worktime because he’s catching up on what he wasn’t taught while in the cult!
- That’s why his handwriting is famously awful to read! The cult must’ve not let him write so they couldn’t communicate to escape!
- That’s why he’s so touchy about talking about the future!
- That’s why he’s so awkward actually talking to people! He never got experience in the cult because he couldn’t talk to outsiders!
- That’s why he uses weird slang nobody’s ever heard of.
- That’s why he didn’t know what a giraffe was!
- That’s why he randomly disappears from school for weeks at a time, because he’s getting treatment from brainwashing!
- The brainwashing treatment rumor eventually devolves into that Bart disappears randomly for days or weeks at a time from school because he needs to pray to the gods he worshipped at certain times or is trying to escape back to the cult but keeps getting brought back; to he’s under the witness protection program and needs to be hidden from cult members trying to find Bart and bring him back (backers of this version claim that’s why they can’t find any records of a ‘Bart Allen’ anywhere online is because it’s a fake identity). and so the rumor’s light connection to reality devolves rapidly
- They’re middle schoolers so the rumors get a little weird (if not downright bizarre & essentially nonsensical because, again, middle schoolers. I only faintly remember rumors from middle school at this point but I remember they started relatively normal and then got fucking weird and most made zero logical sense ) but they center around one main thing: explaining away every weird thing about Bart on the fact that he recently escaped a doomsday cult
#bart allen#flash#young justice#kid flash#impulse#dc comics#writing prompt#prompt#dc#middle school kids are the weirdest creatures and are just on the cusp of knowing Big Knowledge but don’t have any of the fine details tater#so they still make these fucking weird ass leaps in logic that make No sense and they all go ‘yep that makes sense’#so the rumors would go from ‘he was in catholic school’ to ‘he was in a cult’#would evolve Very quickly once the scars were found out#and the absolute devastation that would be wrought on rumors from Bart during PE#because the guy has a runner’s build and can run the mile in record time#so the rumor evolves to that Bart’s cult was about having to run/escape an alien invasion#and slowly due to middle schooler exaggeration#the rumor becomes almost uncomfortably close to reality with the only exception that time travel isn’t involved#and I think that would be funny as hell to explore#feel free to add on or elaborate on any way you wish! please tag me if you’re inspired by this to write your own fic!#bones speaks

I would love to hear more about your Angel !!
oKAY SO ANGEL
his tag on here is angel (train’s version) for reference. also my old rp blog for him is @aithrioch which has some things like headcanons and aesthetics.
Okay gonna make an effort to not repeat myself though I also can’t completely remember what I’ve already said so B)
More emphasis on his time homeless. Like it’s brought up in more when it makes sense and it becomes especially important in ATS and becomes a point of bonding and discussion between him and Gunn.
Dating Buffy is probably his biggest lapse in judgement since wandering into an alley to get laid in the 1700s and it shows. Like he walked in knowing this was a bad idea, saw every red flag and did it anyway. It’s not a reemergence of Angelus behavior it’s Peak Liam Nonsense and it’s left his relationship and feelings towards Buffy very complex and fucked. I think from like BTVS S4/ATS S1 on his primary feeling towards her isn’t really love but guilt. Guilt over how much he fucked up her life and not just as Angelus but you know, as an adult engaging romantically with a teen.
Angelus has more of a Hannibal Lector vibe.
Heavy substance abuse in BTVS as part of coping. When we see him in btvs he’s literally JUST stopped living on the streets in the Depths of Despair. So in btvs S1-2 he’s smoking and drinking heavily to try and make it through another moment on this bitch of an earth. The drinking isn’t as obvious an issue until Buffy’s with him more. Ironically angelus drinks and smokes a normal ass amount because he’s not Lamenting and angel stops doing both in s3 since you know.... fresh outta hell and all that. don’t worry he’s back to chain smoking when he gets into ATS lol. It becomes a Running Issue with him and his Very Human and Lung Dependent Staff.
He listens to the smiths, the cure and similar music. He’s that kinda person. yes. also still listens to barry mannilow. he’s a man of many facets.
He’s Very Normal about Darla. So Normal.
Angel(us) has a Complex around his visual age and how it tends mean that he isn’t given much respect. Part of what fueled his actions back in the day was clout building so he’d get some fucking respect and stop being treated like a baby faced loser.
Circling back to the Buffy thing he realizes in ATS S2 that he perpetuated the cycle of abuse/grooming with her that Darla perpetuated on him. Because Darla 10000% groomed and manipulated him.
Darla and Angel have a Louis and Lestat vibe (but like..... more the new series version of them you know????)
Falls back into Catholicism after his time in hell for the comfort of it. he was born in 1700s Ireland where church was the center of life and Catholicism is like, the most ritualistic version of Christianity. It’s the familiarity and ritual/schedule of it that are comforting/helpful for him, less so the religious stuff. Even so ats needed more catholic stuff in it. Catholic ideology is a staple of angel’s thinking, the bedrock of it really. Literally all this shit about sin and redemption and shit is so aggressively catholic. He’s literally out here looking for a priest who can tell him how many Hail Marys he needs to say to atone for the Atrocities.
Is actually very jealous of Spike later into BTVS/ATS. When Spike’s hanging out with the Scoobies n shit just fine because Spike’s capable of that kind of interaction without a soul while Angel has one and still struggles with it. It’s one of the few things in which he gets jealous of Spike over, how easy it is for him to straddle the soul/morality/dark impulse control chasm. Like it’s very unlikely he’d ever say it out loud or tell the Scoobies but Angel knows just how difficult chip or no chip some vampires would find it to be even remotely civil let alone actually work with them. it frustrates him endlessly that Spike has it so easy.
Yes even as Angel he DOES have an EGO.
Angel(us) is just a metric ton of complexes in a trenchcoat. ATS is just a guided tour through them.
In my brain he’s a mix of Marcus from Deadly Class, Stefan from The Vampire Diaries and Hannibal Lector from the Movies and Shows. Along with some Columbo and Stock Lovecraft Protagonist for flavor.
He’s so pretentious, so lifeless and pallid. He’s like a drive thru attendant with an MFA in fine arts during a graveyard shift.
okay this is all I’m doing on this for now as opposed to the fucking NOVEL for Xander because I don’t have the energy/brain power for it now and if I waited for that to happen to write another novel it could be another 80 years lol

Extended Author's Note, 3rd edition
Oh my god, it has been a long time since the last one! Uh...hello?
In this one, I wanted to talk about deleted scenes. Every writer wrote stuff that they decided didn't make sense with the story.
So, what didn't make the cut in Those Quiet Hours?
Between the end of the first case (The Haunted Store) and the beginning of the second one (Nightmare Hotel), there were supposed to be two chapters for Takao's training and Max would play a huge role in it!
Wait, what? What would Max do? I spoke about the influence Ghost Hunt by Fuyumi Ono had on me in writing this story and there's this character:
John Brown, a 19-year-old Australian catholic priest. And I thought, hm, I also have a blonde baby-faced boy who speaks a bit funky in canon. Come here Max, you're a catholic exorcist now!
He would intervene in these two chapters to teach Takao basic ghost hunting stuff and he would contextualise a lot of things.
Why didn't it make the cut, you might ask?
I think this character would be cool but it would have been a shame to introduce him just so he would disappear in the latest chapters. Also, the first three chapters to my story are already a big ass intro to the ghost hunting world, I didn't want the story to drag.
Okay. I know you're curious. So here's a little bit of what I wrote (under the cut).
The phone ring was muffled by the closed door at Hiwatari's office. It was impossible to tell who he was speaking to or what he was saying. But whatever that phone call contained, it finally pushed him out of his messy den to address me without any snark.
"Kinomiya, you’ll be undergoing some training for the next case." It was all so sudden that I almost got whiplash from the switch between boredom and urgency.
I stared at him, puzzled. There was a slight shadow of irritation in his eyes when he stared back at my apparent dumbness.
“Training for what? Professional paperwork guy?” I had to admit. Aside from transcribing, writing and compiling paperwork I had no idea what I was doing there. Hiwatari looked as if he had to do some internal gymnastics not to come at me with his usual snide. The guy was using all his energy to be nice for once. I had to admit, I wanted to push him a little over the edge. After all, I still hadn’t forgotten what transpired a week ago.
“This new case has much higher stakes than your convenience store trapped girl. ” Hiwatari replied. “You’ll need to behave professionally and to know what you should be looking for.”
“And using me as bait is in the professional paranormal investigator books?” I wanted it to come out as friendly banter but I was still sore from what happened. My voice shook with animosity.
There was a flash of that same heated energy on his eyes, but he closed them slowly before continuing. Heh, gotcha. “It’s for your own safety.” He was trying his best not to spit sarcasm on me, but he definitely wouldn’t be able to keep it on him. “Don’t forget you’re my employee and required to abide by any training I deem necessary to you.”
Yea, there it was. The impulse of having my fist against his perfect know-it-all face. “Are mediums rare in the market or something? Why hire an untrained guy for the job?”
“There’s a lot of people who claim to be mediums out there. I don’t want to waste time with those.” He explained, to my surprise. “Although you’re very inexperienced, you have quite a vivid perception of ghosts.”
It was odd receiving an almost-compliment from him. It took me a bit to process while I stared at him with a stupid expression. I managed to shake myself out of it quickly. “So how will this training go?”
“I was contacted by an old friend.” He said. “I usually don’t take these simple jobs, so it’s all yours.”
A chill went down my spine.
---
The man standing in front of the house didn’t look at all like I expected him to. He looked young, maybe even younger than me. He looked almost like a renaissance painting, with his golden curls sitting in the perfect state of purposefully messy the angels in those paintings. What threw me off the most was his catholic priest attire. A huge golden cross gleamed on his chest. His huge blue eyes scanned me up and down, maybe thinking that I was young and odd too.
I haven’t met many priests before, but in my mind, they were probably older than the baby-faced blonde in front of me.
“So you’re Kogorou’s Daitenji recommendation, Max Mizuhara.” Hiwatari started the conversation, to my surprise. He even extended his hand for a brief handshake.
“Just call me Max. I’m an apprentice exorcist, so he connected the dots on having me here with your…” he searched his words while looking at me. Max had a thick American accent coming through. “...trainee.”
Hiwatari nodded lightly to acknowledge what the priest said.
“I head a lot about you, Kai Hiwatari.” the blonde continued. “You could say I am a fan”
We were standing in front of our next case site. It was an ordinary family home, it didn’t even look particularly old as most haunted sites are. But as I came to learn that even your local convenience store may be home to some ghosts, I didn’t doubt the presence of some unsavoury ghouls in there. The windy night added an eerie sensation to the neighbourhood and the cold was unwelcome.
“Thank you for taking him in.” Hiwatari bowed politely. He turned around to leave. I grabbed his shoulder to stop him.
“Wait, you’re not staying?” I asked. How did he expect me to handle a haunted place by myself?
“I am busy with something else at the moment.” He replied, continuing his way to the car. I wondered what an evening for Hiwatari looked like since he was totally the workaholic type. He probably continued whatever he did while he was locked inside his office.
I looked at Max awkwardly.
“Don’t worry, you’re in good hands.” He boasted, winking at me. “Got your equipment ready?”
I lifted the strap from the very heavy backpack, the electronic equipment inside clacking against each other. I gulped. “As ready as one can be.”
---
My hands were shaky, but I tried hard to not let my fear show through. I had just finished installing the last camera in the master bedroom. Mizuhara’s attentive eyes watched me with little commentary. “Ok, all cameras are correctly positioned.” I stated, taking a few steps back to contemplate the room.
Most of the house was either empty or had very little furniture since the owners planned on selling it. However, many of the potential buyers reported some odd encounters in the house. They would hear footsteps in the attic, objects would fall mysteriously, they would trip on the air and the worst ones: someone got pushed down the stairs by something they couldn’t see. Just the thought of it made me shiver.
“You look very tense.” Max observed.
After my last ghost hunting experience, I was surely uneasy about how a case usually unfolds. While Hiromi wasn’t dangerous, the spirits in this house seemed to be quite unfriendly. And I knew, as a medium, that they could do much worse to people who could see them.
“I just don’t like interacting with ghosts.” I answered, sparing him of any details of what truly happened last time. And since Max seemed to admire Hiwatari, I wasn’t about to crush his impression of him.
His eyes were directed at my trembling hands. “How odd for a medium.”
Max’s bright blue eyes kept staring at me with curiosity. I think I was the next best after Hiwatari and he was indeed eager to know more about the newbie my boss hired.
I shrugged. “It wasn’t exactly my intention to work professionally with ghosts.”
“Oh?” His eyes opened wide as if he just struck gold. Shit, me and my big mouth.
I answered before even thinking if this was information I should be sharing. Something in his demeanour just eased me into talking. “Well, you see, I owe Hiwatari a favour.”
“Oh, that’s fascinating.” He said, his hands clasping together while his eyes shone. “You would think it’d be every medium’s dream to work for a famous investigator like him.”
Wait, what? “He’s famous?”
“You didn’t know? He’s a total celebrity in the paranormal investigation field.”
Okay, that was unexpected. How does a guy like Hiwatari, full of shady methods to solve his cases, get to celebrity status? “My previous jobs were all retail. I’m not necessarily informed on this line of uh… business.”
“He has been on TV and everything” Max kept going. “A few years ago, he solved this disappearance that happened in the eighties, it was a cold case. The media was all over it.”
Whoa, I had no idea.
“Since then, the chief of police seems to want to keep him close. I guess he owes him a big favour too since he was directly responsible for his promotion.” He said, seeming way too eager to share all the details. Max was apparently Hiwatari’s biggest fanboy. “He’s the one who contacted put us in contact, Mr Daitenji.”
I was glad that the priest was as talkative as he was. First, to fill in the silence that could be a space for ghostly whispers, and second, to get a better insight into who Hiwatari was. My boss wasn’t the most talkative person on earth, so there was no way that I could have learned those facts directly from him.
“Can we start now? I just want to get this over with.” I finally said, dreading my next tasks.
“Of course. Run me through your plan.”
I had skimmed through the notes that Hiwatari gave me about how to conduct a proper investigation earlier, so I tried my best to pull from my memory what I had to do. “So, cameras have been installed in the reported active areas. This room, the kitchen and… one pointed to the door to the attic. I also installed temperature detectors to look for any temperature changes.”
I didn’t want to think about the attic and whatever was walking around in there, but my mind started giving me glimpses of what horrible spirit could be living there. I didn’t feel nauseous, which meant no ghosts were manifesting themselves yet, but I felt observed.
“We’ll check the attic as the last step since we still don’t know the nature of what we are dealing with.” I pointed out. Mizuhara nodded in agreement with my strategy.
“And what equipment are you carrying with you?”
I pointed at the small camera secured to my chest. “This camera and I have a voice recorder to capture the… Voices-thing?”
“You mean the EVPs, electronic voice phenomenons.” He corrected me, gently. What a relief that Hiwatari wasn’t there, I could feel him rolling his eyes at me even if he wasn’t there. “Well, I also have something of my own that might be useful.”
He showed me what looked like a small radio with a microphone attached to it. “What is this?”
“It’s called a ghost box. It scans through radio frequencies rapidly and allows spirits to manipulate the sound to communicate with us.” He explained as he pressed the power button.
The loud sound of radio static invaded the room and I jumped, startled. What in the world was this? I swear that the sound alone was capable of freaking anyone out. “Uhm, why do I need this if I can already see them?” I said as he pressed the off button to end the auditory torture.
“I’m not a medium, so I have to rely on this to communicate with those poor souls.” He pointed out.
Now we had to move on to the real deal. My first official ghost hunt.
My palms were sweaty as I pressed the record button on the voice recorder and made sure that the camera attached to me was on.
“I’m reaching out to whoever is in this house.” I said, with a wavering voice. “My name is Takao Kinomiya, can you say my name back to me?”
Complete silence.
We waited for a few minutes before I had to change strategy. Max turned on the dreaded ghost box. The initial loud sound cemented on me that I hated the ghost box.
“Hello, reaching out again. Is there anyone here with us?”
The ghost box kept skipping loudly through the channels. But then a very clear sound came out of it.
“Yes.” The sound was broken into two different radio voices. I wasn’t sure whether I should take it as evidence or not. I pressed on.
“My name is Takao, can you repeat it for me?”
There was a pause before the radio voice said it back to me. “Ta…kao…”
I exchanged looks with Mizuhara, who had a very stern expression on his face. “Could you tell me your name?”
“Get… out…” it answered in a guttural voice. I was completely frightened, but the evaluating look coming from the priest kept me from sprinting out of the house.
“We’re not here to harm you.” And how would I know if it didn’t want to harm me? I wanted to just leave whatever was in there locked inside the house, but I knew I had a job to do. “We will leave if you talk to us. Could you tell me your name?”
“Tenmaru.” the radio voices said my name, sounding nothing like the threatening “Get out” from moments ago.
“Tenmaru… Is there anyone else in this house?”
“Big brother…” it answered on the radio. But I also heard a voice coming from the ceiling. “Stop. He will hear us.”
“Did you hear this?” I asked, pointing up. He shook his head. Cool. I spoke to the radio again. “Where are you right now?”
“Get out.” and with that, the loud sound of the radio static came back. I guess the ghosts didn’t feel like making my day easier. Max turned off the loud ghost box.
I didn’t exactly know how to proceed from there. The ghost didn’t necessarily feel friendly. “How do I proceed from here?” I asked.
“Well, you’re the medium. Aside from what they said, what else do you perceive?” Max asked me, with a patient smile on his face. My main focus had been the voice on the radio. But maybe if I focused enough I could get more information.
“The voice I heard seemed to come from the ceiling, which tells me they might be in the attic. But it’s hard with ghosts, the sound is not exactly… Directional” I told the priest. I closed my eyes for a bit, trying to focus on how the room felt.
For a while, it was just that, silence in an empty room. As I tried to dive more and more into this state of immersion, I started to perceive little details. Mizuhara’s breathing, the light rain starting to hit the windows, the vibrations in the air…
I chased them with my mind. There was an energy in the house. I focused on the attic. It’s weird, I could tell that there were three people in there. One was small and non-threatening, the other one was a lot more emotional and aggressive, its energy encompassing the smaller one. And there was something else…
“I think Tenmaru is a child.” I finally said, words spilling out of my mouth before I even thought about them. “His brother is trying to protect him. And there’s a third one.”
“Can you tell what it is?”
“I just feel a very strong negative emotion when I try to focus on it.” I hesitated before saying the next words. “I think we need to see the attic.”

Part Three: Mac, Dee, and the Conclusion
Mac's Risk Factors
Trauma: Mac was physically and emotionally abused for his entire childhood. He is still abused by his mother. Like the rest of the Gang, he's had multiple close calls with violent death.
Events leading to feelings of humiliation or despair: The rejection by his dad was obviously devastating, and he seems to be coping with it by being in denial ("My dad loves me! Yes he does!"). If the denial ever shatters, I would be very worried about a suicide attempt.
Mental illness, past or present: Mac is severely mentally ill, with a solid handful of diagnosable mental health issues that are not being treated. He most likely has BPD, meaning the same alarming statistic that applies to Dennis applies to him. His impulsivity and mood swings can be a very dangerous combination.
Substance use: Mac is an alcoholic, which amplifies the mood swings from the BPD.
Past suicidal behavior: While Mac's announcement that he was going to commit suicide in Ireland was relatively half-assed, it is still very concerning. It shows that Mac, on some level, sees that as a viable option. There's something called a suicidal gesture, in which someone makes a suicide attempt without intent to actually die, usually as a cry for help. This would be a concern with Mac based on his earlier behavior. It's easy for a suicidal gesture to become a death by suicide.
Anger: Like Charlie and Dennis, Mac has a lot of anger that he struggles to tamp down. The severity and frequency of Mac's rage episodes have decreased quite a bit in recent seasons, so this is more of a concern in the earlier seasons.
Recklessness: *gestures at the Gang's schemes*. Also, his habit of claiming he can scale or leap off buildings coupled with some of the Project Badass stuff makes me concerned about his ability to effectively assess risk in the moment.
Marginalized sexual identity: Mac is gay (with a lot of internalized homophobia until recently). His parents do not support him, and neither does the official doctrine of his religion. Being LGBT in an unaccepting environment is a huge risk factor for suicide.
Mac's Protective Factors
Religious beliefs that discourage suicide: As bad as being Catholic is for him in most other ways, it is an asset in that official doctrine frowns on suicide. This is often cited by people with suicidal ideation but no plan as a reason they would never act on their feelings.
Connection to family or community: The Gang, once again, appears as a double-edged sword. Living with Dennis means he has fewer opportunities to do something drastic. His desire to take care of people also keeps him anchored. While his misconception that his mom loves him is heartbreaking, it does protect him by making sure he would consider her imaginary feelings about his potential death. He's an intermittent churchgoer, which may also make him feel connected to a community.
Dee's Risk Factors
Trauma: Dee was emotionally abused her entire childhood and into adulthood. There's likely medical neglect as well, since a halo brace like the one we see her wear in the reunion episode is supposed to be a temporary first step in severe scoliosis treatment, not a 6+ year thing. She's almost died with the rest of the Gang several times.
Events leading to feelings of humiliation or despair: Honestly too many to list.
Physical health issues: Dee has a TBI, if the boys' recollection in the roller rink episode is correct. People with TBIs are at higher risk for suicide.
Mental illness, past or present: Dee displays many of the same BPD symptoms as Dennis. Whether that's a product of her TBI or its own thing is unclear, but it's a big risk factor regardless. She also gets manic in a way that leads her to become a thrill seeker, which gets dangerous fast. The "rush" she gets from almost dying is really, really worrying.
Substance use: Dee is an alcoholic with a comorbid cocaine addiction. She also takes rohypnol recreationally. These all worsen either the mania or the depression.
Ideation: Dee's got a fascination with death. She's obviously thought of various ways to kill herself.
Access to lethal means: Alcohol combined with illegal drugs
Past suicidal behavior: Dee has made an offscreen suicide attempt on at least one occasion. She also wants to "see the other side" and takes steps to do so.
Anger: Dee's difficulty with emotion regulation includes very intense anger.
Recklessness: *gestures at the Gang's schemes.* See also the entirety of "The Gang Chokes"
Dee's Protective Factors
Connection to family or community: Dee's connection to Dennis, in particular. He looks out for her, albeit reluctantly. The rest of the Gang does care about her, but they're so bad at showing it that I'm not sure she's aware of it. Her friendship with Charlie, before the assault, would have also been a protective factor.
The Conclusion
Normally I would give individual results in terms of risk level, but the answer here is that they are all high risk. They have so many risk factors and so few protective factors that it makes the sirens go off in the back of my brain.
(A final note: If you are reading this and struggling with suicidal ideation, please reach out for help. If you are in the US, you can call 988 or text 741741. If you are outside the US or can't/don't use a phone, please see the note at the beginning of part 1 for other support options.)
A side effect of being trained to do suicide risk assessments is that sometimes I look at the Gang and something in the back of my brain goes 🚨🚨. Especially Dee. It's honestly a wonder they're all still alive.
