Happy Feast Day
Saint Lucy
283 - 304
Feast Day: December 13
Patronage: blind, martyrs, Perugia, Italy, epidemics, salesmen, throat infections, writers
Saint Lucy is a 4th c. virgin martyr who died during Diocletian’s persecution of Christians. Little is known of Lucy's life but legend gives us many stories. One is that after the governor ordered her to be defiled at a brothel, guards were not able to move her, even with the help of oxen pulling her. Another was that while being tortured, her eyes were gouged out, yet when her body was being prepared for burial they discovered her eyes had been restored.

"In my deepest wound, I saw Your glory and it dazzled me."
Thinking about how Lucy wouldn't have met Lockwood and George if she hadn't lost her old team. How she wouldn't have been an agent if her parents had loved her well. How she found love and family and friendship precisely because of all the pain she had been through.
Thinking about how George and Lucy got closer after the Bone Glass. How it took him feeling alone, him feeling abandoned, Lucy almost losing him for it to finally click that he was loved. For Lucy to finally realize how much she loved him.
Thinking about how it takes falling beneath Aickmere's for Lucy to realize she needs to apologize. How it takes Lockwood almost losing Lucy to realize he messed up, too.
Thinking about how it takes an adventure to the other side for Lockwood to be vulnerable with Lucy.
Thinking about how Jessica's death glow saves Lockwood, Lucy, George, Flo, Holly and Kipps. Thinking about how it was there for years, so, so strong, but Jessica never came back. She stayed there for Lockwood. Not to come back and see him. Not to tempt him to touch her. But to let her death bring him life. To let her suffering mean something.
Anyway, Happy Feast of St. Augustine.

The feast of Santa Lucia, in Italy, is a journey through popular traditions, from Sicily to Calabria
Santa Lucia (Saint Lucy) is celebrated in Italy on 13 December.
Santa Lucia was, according to the hagiographies which are our only sources, a young girl from Syracuse in Sicily. Born in 283, she died during the persecutions of the Christians under Emperor Diocletian in 304, on December 13th.
The Life of Saint Lucy
As a young woman Lucy was promised in marriage to a pagan. Christians, like Lucy, were at this time still very much a minority in Syracuse.
However, on a pilgrimage to visit the tomb of St Agatha, Lucy had a vision of the saint which was to change the direction of her life. Agatha spoke to Lucy telling her she would cure her mother’s illness (internal bleeding), which she did. After this experience Lucy knew she must dedicate her life to Christ. She made a vow to remain a virgin to better serve her purpose.

On her return to Syracuse, Lucy told her mother of her decision to dedicate her life to Christ, as well as to give all her worldly possessions to the needy. Her mother was at first, (perhaps naturally) sceptical. But eventually it seems she was won over by Lucy’s faith and determination. Over the following years Lucy’s fame in dedicating her life to the poor spread throughout Syracuse and further afield. The young man who wished to marry her, seeing Lucy give all her money and possessions to the poor, and having been refused, decided to denounce her to the town prefect as a Christian. For some time the Roman Empire had felt threatened by this growing Christian “cult” and wanted a display of Rome’s continuing might and power. Lucy was a well-known figure in the community. If she could be forced to renounce her faith other Catholics might follow her. This was the thinking of those who brought her to trial.

So, Lucy was brought to court, where she was accused of being dissolute and possibly of unsound mind too (this was still largely a pagan society where a person’s wealth and possessions were how they gained status in life). It was to be a public trial, so that the humiliation of Lucy could discredit her religion and serve as a warning to other Christians.
At one point the judge Paschasius mocked Lucy for her virginity and said that she would be taken to a brothel, and here she would “lose her chastity” and then “the Holy Ghost shall depart from thee”. Lucy replied that her strength in God meant that 10,000 men would not be able to move her. When the judge put Lucy’s boast to the test this was found to be true – the men could not move her. The judge subsequently ordered for Lucy to be burned and a great fire was built. Lucy again stayed calm and asked for protection from the Lord, calling herself “a temple of God”. The fire was lit, but the flames did not touch her. Lucy told that crowd that persecution of Christians would not last much longer. Hearing her speak so eloquently the prefect was at his wit’s end and called out for anyone that could kill Lucy. Finally someone (probably a soldier) drew a sword and cut Lucy’s throat, which finally killed her.

Her first resting place was in the catacombs under Syracuse which now bears her name. This became the initial centre of her cult, which quickly flourished.
Patron of light and eye sight

Absent in the early narratives and traditions, at least until the fifteenth century, is the story of Lucia tortured by eye-gouging. According to later accounts, before she died, she foretold the punishment of Paschasius and the speedy end of the persecution, adding that Diocletian would reign no more and Maximian would meet his end. This so angered Paschasius that he ordered the guards to remove her eyes. Another version has Lucy taking her own eyes out in order to discourage a persistent suitor who admired them. When her body was prepared for burial in the family mausoleum it was discovered that her eyes had been miraculously restored. This is one of the reasons that Lucy is the patron saint of those with eye illnesses.
The idea probably came from her name Lucy, which derives from lux which is the Latin for light.
She became the patron saint of light and of eye sight. In artistic representations her attributes are two eyes on a plate in her hand.
Her feast day is the day of her martyrdom, December 13th, which in the Julian calendar is the winter solstice, and hence the shortest day of the year. It is therefore a celebration of the return of light.
The procession and rites in honour of Santa Lucia in Sicily and Calabria

Santa Lucia was born in Syracuse, a city in Sicily where the veneration of the martyr and patron saint is at the centre of fervent popular devotion. The celebrations reach their peak on 13 December, the date of her martyrdom, which occurred in 304 A.D. following Diocletian's Christian persecutions.
On this day, a solemn procession accompanies the Statue and Relics of the Saint from the Cathedral to the Church of Lucia al Sepolcro (Lucia at the Sepulchre), a route that is completed in reverse on 20 December. The Statue is a precious silver Simulacrum, dating back to 1599: the Saint wears a palm and a lily, symbol of purity, on her left hand, on her chest the reliquary with the Relics, on her throat a gem-studded dagger and in her right hand a plate with eyes.

The Statue is carried on people's shoulders along the streets of the historic centre, ancient Ortigia, and many devotees walk barefoot, amid flowers and burning candles.
December 13th marks a particularly heartfelt moment in Calabria, where devotion to the "Saint of Light" is intertwined with centuries-old traditions that combine Christian faith, folklore and ancient rites.

In Lamezia Terme (Calabria), the church of Santa Lucia stands in the upper and old part of Nicastro and for this reason the entire neighborhood takes the name of the saint.
Rectangular in shape, the church is modest in size with a very simple facade. The interior has a single nave and inside there are: a wooden statue of Saint Lucia, perhaps from 1700, which surmounts the marble high altar, the work of the sculptor Pergola (1970); a conciliar altar with bas-reliefs on wood and a sculpted ambo (1980), and in two special niches the statues of the Madonna and the Redeemer.

On the night of December 13th, Calabria comes alive with spectacular bonfires, a symbol of light and purification, which illuminate the squares and alleys of numerous towns.
The "Fireworks of Saint Lucia", in Crotone, are one of the most fascinating and evocative traditions of this day. Their origin dates back to ancient times, when they were lit to chase away the darkness of winter, recalling at the same time the image of the Saint and the solstitial rites.

There's no rule that says Coriolanus Snow can't be a romantic and a gentleman to his girlfriend while at the same time as being an evil dictator villian with the blood of millions of teens and children on his hands. He can be both. It makes him more intriguing that he can be both. That he has empathy for a certain number of people, but can't spare more than that(I headcanon that he was a good grandfather to his grandchildren)
PREACH!
If things had gone slightly different in canon, I’m convinced Snow would’ve had a loving marriage while still becoming the villain we know in THG. After all, his decision to forsake romantic love after the events of TBOSAS is in itself a testament to the depth of his feelings for Lucy Gray.
Love doesn’t equal redemption or goodness, and the fact that he’s a fundamentally selfish person in a position of power doesn’t mean Snow isn’t also capable of human emotions and attachment. Especially when the prequel makes the opposite argument. I agree with you that in canon he seemed like a loving grandfather even as he reached unheard of levels of cruelty as President.
His innate possessiveness would on the contrary make him a very doting and protective husband (to the right woman, sorry Livia). Whether the relationship would have stood the test of time (and of his thirst for power) is another matter entirely. Most AUs where Coryo and Lucy Gray go back to the Capitol and he goes into government have her betraying him in the end, and I also think that would the most likely outcome. Theirs is a monstrous love, etc etc
#he doesn’t stop loving lucy gray even for a second —he just makes a point of (unsuccessfully) banishing all thoughts of her#i love being able to enjoy characters that embody contradictions without feeling guilty!!!!#nuance is my friend#to think that only ‘good’ characters are capable of love is to have a very infantile vision of it#idk if it’s the catholic upbringing rearing its head whenever i consider villains but i can never ignore their humanity#it’s the most fascinating thing about them#their being monstrously cruel despite the lingering empathy#snowbaird#coriolanus snow#lucy gray baird#the ballad of songbirds and snakes#tbosas#the hunger games#thg

it actually really annoys me how well death note fits into dracula because i don’t like writing l/light as a predatory dynamic even though i do enjoy reading fics with that interpretation sometimes but like the correspondence is so so clear. dracula (L) and his three roommates (near mello matt). mina “haha i bet those newfangled feminists will be the one doing the proposing not like me i am polite and normal” “holds her husband’s arm instead of the traditional other way around” harker is obviously kiyomi takada since they are both the repressed butches of all time and id really like to see kiyomi have a breakdown about holy items leaving scars in her skin. i actually cannot decide between jonathan-light and lucy-misa or the other way around because lucy “i fancy myself a tough nut to crack” “my entire personality is masks and i die by suffocation under them” westenra could fit both of them so well but jonathan’s manic devotion is honestly very misacore. renfield mikami is very important to me not just because disciple god etc but because renfield tries so hard to get everyone else to take him seriously by acting the part of the refined gentleman he once was and because his last act is a futile attempt at resisting his god (and as a bonus he gets along with mina-kiyomi). the suitors are also there i guess
#sorry i like the suitors im just not as insane about them#anyway hello mutuals who Do like them as a predatory dynamic. have you considered#ugh both jon misa and lucy misa are so good this is the problem#misa as a party girl who after undeath turns shy and meek and the exact housewife she could never quite become#and doesnt suck in a breath when kiyomi brushes her thumb over misas carotid anymore. just gazes at her with flat blue eyes#but also misa as jonathan harker. holiest love. if my boyfriend is going to hell then im going with him and damn the rest of you#(but that only works if mina is light)#death note#actually if we’re only considering characterization i think the most accurate casting is seward light and van helsing L lmao#and also theres a really good alternative with mina-mello jon-near lucy-matt. because if we’re doing catholic guilt mello we might as well-#-go all in!#and of course near “yes mello killed half my team but have you considered i love him” river would be jon.#but anyway#from the drafts

Saint Lucy, painted by Francesco del Cossa (1474)
Saint Lucy was a Roman Christian martyr who died during the diocletian persecution (13th Dec 303 AD)
She is often depicted holding a plate or tray containing her own eyes symbolising her sacrifice and utter devotion to her faith. She is the patron saint of the blind alongside those with eye alignments.
In this detail, a depiction of Saint Lucy is shown of her holding a pair of eyes from a stalk. The story of the removal of her eyes is depicted in a variety of different ways. One of them being that despite her vow of chastity and dedication to God, a Pagan suitor tried to wed her. As a result of her refusal of this offer a denouncement of her Christian faith was told to the Roman authorities which led her persecution.
Other depictions show that the removal of her eyes was intentional in an attempt to repel her suitor. As a result of this God miraculously gifted her sight as well as more beautiful eyes as a sign of her purity and faith in God.
An alternative version depicts Saint Lucy's eyes to have been gouged out by Roman authorities as a form of punishment. After her death it was said her eyes were extraordinarily found in their places again.

so i was wearing my lockwood and co shirt today, and my friend took at look at it an was like "so what's lockwood and co about? that's, like, your thing, right?" and damn i just got so excited and proceeded to launch into what it's about
friend one (the one who brought it up) kept offering sarcastic commentary on the Problem at which point (when i was finaly able to talk after he made me laugh at one of those comments) all i say is: "basicaly, it comes down to this: government conspiracies"
and he looses it completely at this point
friend two says she wants to read the series now
friend one is shocked its a series. he only knew about the show. also, he is now piecing together the plot of government conspiracies and the source of the Problem (laughs at the source of the problem being a giant source. i sadly tell him that's a coincidence (or is it?))
at one point he gets into the philosophical/theoretical implications of a ghost-ridden world, asking me how it functions. then laughs at himself, because those are absurd question. i tell him there's a character who asks those exact questions as he just did. he proceeds to loose it again. conversation goes like this:
me: his name is geroge
friend one: of course his name is george *trying not to die of laughter*
me: i love george
friend two: damn me too bro
(ah, good, a fellow george appreciator, and she doesn't even know him yet)
then we ended up talking about our favorite government conspiracies
there is no point to this post. i just wanted yall to know about this wild conversation i had the time i gave my friends the "explain a book plot badly" summary of lockwood and co
#friend one said he might give the book to his sister#friend two has been meaning to read it#george cubbins appreciation post#also i made friend one show me his spotify wrapped and it was mostly all Catholic lofi#lockwood & co#anthony lockwood#lucy carlyle#skull in a jar#edit: i just found out those two friends are dating#and they LeT ME ThIRD WHEELE#rants rambles and random thougts
