your tags. yeah. it's not that they are progressive or feminist or even written by women -- but they are doing something with women that is complex and worth paying attention to, and in many cases they are the reason we have a version of a particular woman's story at all
yeah that's one of the marketing conceits of the myth retelling novel industrial complex that bothers me, it's the framing as if no one has ever paid attention to these female characters who are buried unnoticed in the myths when often the most complete or the most authoritative version of the character's story that survives from antiquity is in tragedy, a genre that is notoriously interested in bringing female characters out of the house and putting them on stage in active roles, and in using those female characters to explore issues of gender and the place of women in contemporary society.
like to a certain degree it makes sense for the homeric women who don't appear in (extant) tragedy, like briseis or the hanged women in odyssey 22, but we have stories where clytemnestra and deianira and medea insist on make narrative space for themselves to tell their own stories from their own perspectives, refusing to be silent about the violence their society inflicts upon women and the lasting damage it does. they're called aeschylus' agamemnon and sophocles' trachiniae and euripides' medea. and maybe you want to retell those stories for modern audiences, changing things or emphasizing different aspects of them! and that's great! but framing it as if they've been ignored and their stories are as-yet-untold is just not accurate, and it's a cheap way to paint your work as innovative and subversive.
#interestingly the exception is medusa. who really is never given her own voice in antiquity *because she's never imagined as a person*#so like. the same way there nobody in antiquity wanted to look at the labors of heracles from the perspective of the hydra.#but (following ovid) modern reception tends to understand medusa as a person with interiority and her own perspective#in a way that i dont think would have made sense to anyone in archaic or classical greece#and medusa is often put into this category of 'misunderstood women' for the purposes of retellings#mine#ask#wizardysseus#retellings#reception

Here's how to spot a Mad Scientist:
Is very smart in a specific field
Probably hasn't slept in the past 4 days
Depressed
Slowly decends into madness/spirals/gets obsessed over something to the point where they destroy their lives over it
Here are other minor signs you might want to look out for (doesn't apply to all Mad Scientist):
Very pathetic. A loser, if you will
Is gay
Wears glasses
Has a best friend who is extremely friendly and also a poet
Graying hair despite their relatively youthful appearance
Can be a little bit silly (as a treat)
Note that not all Mad Scientists are actual scientists. The Mad Scientist can be disguised as something else and may try to trick you; do not be fooled. Look for these traits to identify a real wild Mad Scientist.
Now you are ready to go out into the wild and find your very own Mad Scientists to hyperfixate on for the next month! Hope this helped❤️

this comment was made in response to a bunch of terf bs and I don't tend to like sharing their stuff directly but I desperately wanted to preserve this line on my blog. sorry for stealing your post ms doubleca5t.
#one of their lines of argument was like#'sex isn't a social construct humans aren't a social construct animals and land aren't social constructs'#and like. comrade. I have some really bad news about the history of the construction of 'humanity' as a category.#'people are not a social construct' says person who sees no problem in calling everyone 'males' and 'females' as nouns#marina marvels at life#id in alt text#anyway I think this line is going to live in my head in a similar place as my classic#'me when I haven't been banned from my local lgbt center' litany for when I see weird exclusionism

Was Ingo a true tumblr sexyman???? (Poll)
Ok so i have seen many debates over what makes a tumblr sexyman and i want to know what the consensus is on Ingo's sexyman status. Here are some points of discussion to think about:
is he weird-looking enough?
clothing/silhouette
tumblr sexyman vs blorbo vs babygirl culture. which one fits best?
personality. are tumblr sexymen required to be fucked up freaks?
was the fandom insane/horny enough to qualify him as a sexyman? How inexplicable was his fandom popularity/portrayal?
popularity in terms of scope and legacy. And do other sites cultures count? ex. jpn fandom on twit
twink death????
And to anyone who may come across this and don't know anything about Ingo, feel free to vote based on visuals alone lol
#warden ingo#subway boss ingo#submas#pokemon#poll#im curious to see what people think#personally i feel like he overall qualifies but warden ingo was a little bit more of a popular blorbo rather than a true sexyman#ingo classic would absolutely be a sexyman imo but i think warden ingo was overall more popular on tumblr fandom so its hard to say#also this isnt a competition im just curious to see what ppls thoughts are so the poll isnt designed to maximize votes into any category#sorry if this is formatted weird this is the first poll ive made lol

why does l apologize so much during the foot drying scene? seems ooc
Hmmm, I agree wichu, I feel it's a bit out of character for the original manga!L to do something like that. In some ways the anime versions of the characters are a bit different than the manga ones, and the manga ones are the ones I'm usually thinking about when I'm thinking about characterization 'n' such.
My best guess about it is that anime!L is going through something like the first hints of character development at this point? It's definitely an emotional change to how he's been acting and interacting with Light up until this scene (which is kinda a little bit of a gripe I have with episode 25... I certainly don't hate it, and I'm very fond of the rain scene and think it's iconic and interesting in its own way. I just think that they didn't build up to it super well in the previous episodes, and that it therefore feels a bit out of nowhere and emotionally out of sync with how they've been setting everything up between L and Light until this point).
Anyway, I think L is feeling sad and worried about how things are going to go from here on out (as Light has regained his memories and suddenly been acting very ominously like Kira again, and from what I remember I think L pretty much knows that after they do this next test on the notebook one or the other of them are probably going to actually die/lose?) And based on some of the stuff he says I think he is realizing that he doesn't actually have any close relationships or people he can truly trust and open up to in his life, which seems to be a bit of a regret of his now. I think he obviously felt some sort of a kinship with Light that he'd genuinely never felt before as well (as imo the "first ever friend" scene is both sarcastic/ironic and sincere at the same time, if that makes sense). And I think even though he is dropping the mind games for a moment and trying to have an actual heart-to-heart with Light that Light can't actually reciprocate it due to the circumstances, which maybe just reaffirms to L how alone he really is (that even the one person he actually felt something like a friendship with still can't be trusted or be somebody he can have an honest conversation with). I feel like L sort of just moves things to some sort of symbolic physical way of connecting with Light instead (which seems to be a biblical reference to Jesus washing Judas' and the other disciples' feet, like saying "I know you're going to betray me / but I forgive you anyway" or some such thing?) And maybe the apology is just because he's genuinely feeling a bit awkward and unsure of himself and humbled and like he's actually going to lose to Light soon, but idk.
Even if it's not REALLY something I can picture manga!L doing, and even though I genuinely prefer manga!L's characterization in most ways, I also think it was interesting of the anime to put a moment in where one of them tries to temporarily drop the games for a little bit, and where they both seem to be genuinely feeling a bit soft with each other and regretful that they hadn't met another way.
#if you have ever heard of that category of characters that i think is called 'iconic characters'#where they can stay interesting and likable to an audience even despite having no character development from episode to episode#like idk james bond or any of the super famous classic detectives in literature/tv. they're kinda supposed to never change#or never think that they truly need to change. and i think L is actually one of those kind of characters#so giving him character development isnt REALLY the point of his character or always an improvement of his writing to me#however idk i still like that scene as its own thing#the anime-only L scene i like less and find even more OOC than the rain scene is his 'monster' speech from the relight ova#it seems to be an unpopular opinion in the fandom but i actually kinda hate that one tbh#l lawliet#ask#anon#death note#p

Orlok and Gorcha at the toxic masculinity off who wins?
Gorcha has the excuse of being fucked up on Vourdalak vampirism which clearly soured his personality enough to make him demand his once-favorite dog be killed for barking. And then he had his enemies severed head nailed up outside as a trophy, which shocks his family. Dude is all hopped up on undeath weirdness, so we can't say that's entirely on him
Orlok 2024 went out of his way to Nosferatu and Scholomance his own ass into that condition and has been chilling this way for centuries when we meet him. He is how he is and that is Supremely Aggro Ye Olde Macho Rat Bastard Man.
Though I will speak up for classic 1922 Orlok who is not an aggro manly man's man. Not sure what he is other than a supremely awkward stick bug who does not know how flirting works beyond going 👁️👁️until his crush lets him suck their thumb and/or tiddy
#no contest really#I think 2024 Orlok even has Classic Dracula beat in that particular category of dickery#anyway#gorcha#count orlok#the family of the vourdalak#nosferatu#nosferatu 2024

Thinking about Doctor Who and the whole concept of the Doctor being “just some guy” vs. “world’s specialist princess/guy” (always the universe’s least favorite though)
And how a lot of the classic doctors are like the Doctor is literally just some guy. Like sure he’s mysterious and we have no idea who this man is but he’s literally just some guy in a box doing wacky things with people and trying to do good. And I think this varies from Doctor to Doctor/the impact they leave on the companions/modern day legacy,
Versus some modern story arcs where the Doctor ascends to sort of center of the universe/literal godhood and how 13’s like “the universe is swirling around me” (I just finished Fugitive of the Judoon)
So I decided to break it down:
Just some guy: most of the classic docs, 9, 12 (okay so 12 is interesting because 12 is a least favorite princess desperately trying to be just some guy. He just wants to be some guy trying to do good and he actively fights the narrative that he’s anything different)
Universe’s specialist guy/least favorite princess: 10 (but in the fact that when 10 gets out of his just some guy box the universe shuts him down so fast. The universe hates 10.), 11, 13(13 straddles just some guy and least favorite princess and as of mid season 12 leaning into the latter), 14 (Donna Noble and bigeneration force him into “just some guy” which is generally good for everyone's well-being.) 15 is a least favorite princess/ world's specialist guy who believes/ puts on the persona that he’s truly just some guy until he’s shoved out of his box.
8: i haven't consumed any 8 media but from what I've heard he's the universe's least favorite princess in terms of angst levels
7: universe's specialist princess happens to be just some guy (may change the more i watch 7)
#I've heard people talk about this before but i didn't really see it until 13#i don't have any concrete feelings on what I like better or not at the moment but I am noticing things#Sometimes the companions fall into these categories but that's another story#doctor who#classic who#the doctor

#monthly reading lists#books#trying a new format#because most of my categories are so vague#and i have so many things on my reading list clamoring for attention within those categories#that i need to feature them all as options without committing to any particular one#most of the options are things that were impulse purchases or library picks sitting on my reading piles#if anyone wants to campaign for a particular one (or suggest something different within one of the categories) go for it#after loving 'the warden' i saved 'barchester towers' as a december book#because i wanted to save the big book for a new month#and this would fulfill my december need for a new cozy-yet-crunchy classic#'last christmas in paris' fits for the christmas vibes and also i have a desire for epistolary fiction#emma m lion came out early!#it's a priority but also i don't want to be done with it too soon#i didn't even realize the nina clare book was coming out until a couple days before release#they're not great lit but i've found that after clunky beginnings these books turn out to have surprisingly depth and complexity#(still on a regency romance scale)#i've sometimes wondered if i might like her better than heyer because the servants are people#the dynamics may not be historically accurate but seeing the loyal servants in gaskell it's accurate enough#and it's not like heyer didn't build her own flavor of regency fantasy world so i like one that includes the lower classes#and anyway after last month's poetry escapades this premise will be extra fun

Eugénie Danglars and Louise d'Armilly
from The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
#these are literally the ONLY pictures I can find of them#despite there being a dozen adaptations of monte cristo almost none of them include these characters#also. there are some couples that are so obviously explicitly queer that I don't know if it's worth doing a poll for. and these two are in#that category. but i thought the same of charles and sebastian from brideshead revisited and a quarter of you think they're both straight#the count of monte cristo#alexandre dumas#eugenie danglars#louise d'armilly#gankutsuou#classic literature#polls#queer

My parents are dealing with Hurricane Helene and my mom’s peak priority is getting coffee with no power
Like mom, every other house has a tree ontop of it, you have other issues!
My mom: yes, very true, but also I’m busy making coffee on our camp stove. Trees second, coffee first
#we all lived in Florida for decades#my parents are very experienced and are luckily dealing with the depression and not when it was a category 4#classic ‘ah another natural disaster to live through’ humour
