being in the supernatural fandom is so funny. there are pages-long essays about characterization, metaphors and picture. there is a lot of crack. the fandom is divided whether you ship world's biggest age gap or incest. one of the main actors has an ao3 account and has probably read the fanfiction. another one of the main cast made his own fanfaction and turn it into a tv show. your favourite characters dies, you laugh bc it wont last, the stay dead for a little bit too long and you start to get worry, they get resurrected and damn, these writers dont know when to stop, its the third time they died and came back, fucking commit to it. we all hate the writers and producers. literally invented queerbait and we all fell for it. a random character from a totally unrelated show is canon bisexual and wow, we are trending. you want to defend your fav character and your main obstacle is your fav character (you gaslight yourself into "all fault is on the writers not my baby"). we out-trended the us elections and contine to trend on every anniversary of that day. we discuss which season is the best like they arent a recycled plot we already seen. the show was meant appel to conservaties and the fandom is made of gay people somehow. the main characters are alcoholic murderers that do extremely questionable stuff every season and we love them for it. someone outside the spn fandom finds out you are in and they look at you like you are insane and you cant even blame them.

THIS. If you have to use words like interpret, subtext, coding, off-screen, etc. in your justification, then what you're talking about is a headcanon. There's nothing wrong with that--we all have headcanons about various things--but it doesn't make your opinion a textual part of the show. Canon is purely what happens onscreen, i.e. what the characters actually say or do, and everything else is nothing more than fanon. Which again isn't a bad thing by any means--unless you start to confuse the two.

For example, it's canon that Dean is straight because onscreen he has said multiple times he's interested in women or not interested in men (as have Jensen, Kripke, and other cast/crew) and has only had romantic or sexual interactions with woman. Any "subtext"* or "interpretation" that he's bisexual is purely headcanon because it's not based on what is shown on the screen (and needs to be careful that it's not based on homophobic and toxic masculinity-based stereotypes).

It's also canon that Dean considers Castiel as no more than a friend or adoptive family since onscreen Dean treats Castiel at best no different than his other friends--he's sometimes happy to see Cas but doesn't seek out his company, he doesn't go to extreme measures to save Cas, and he mourns Cas' death(s) briefly before moving on--and at worse is dismissive and annoyed around Cas, insults him, and has no problem abandoning him in dangerous situations (usually to save SAM). Plus it's unavoidably canon that Dean ALWAYS puts Sam first before everyone else, including Castiel. Once again, any "subtext"* or "interpretation" that Dean is attracted to or in love with the angel is purely headcanon because it's not supported by what happens onscreen.

Likewise, it's canon that Castiel loves Dean because he said so onscreen. However, "interpreting" that love as romantic is only a headcanon because his speech in 15.18 Despair only references familial and altruistic love, and his actions onscreen over the course of 12 seasons show that Cas is only attracted to women (when he feels attraction at all) and that his relationship with Dean is at most platonic and is often antagonistic--Cas too only seeks Dean out when one of them needs help and is often impatient and annoyed with him, and he's repeatedly lied to, gas-lit, threatened, abandoned, assaulted, and betrayed Dean.

Like what OP wrote above, this is not meant to say that you shouldn't ship Destiel or depict Dean as bi in fan content (regardless of ship) or whatever else. If interpreting subtext to create these headcanons makes you happy, then you do you, Boo. Just keep in mind that these fantasies are simply that, and don't let yourself get worked up or worse attack other fans, cast, or crew over them.

*Before anyone tries to argue, subtext on TV shows, movies, etc. does NOT work the way certain shippers desperately want it to. Subtext is meant to support the main narrative of the show and is meant to be obvious enough that the general audience can notice and understand. A good example of actual subtext is a flashback to Sam and Dean's childhood that parallels or reveals something about what's happening in the present. However, subtext is NOT meant to tell an entirely separate story from the main narrative or meant be so "subtle" that only a small number of obsessed fans see it. Thus for example, no show ever would present a character as straight in the main narrative but use "subtext" to claim the character is actually queer--once again, that's purely fanon.

People making THE siren episode about Destiel piss me off. I’m sorry but be so serious for like 2 seconds and see what’s right in front of you. All Dean wants is his brother!!!! It’s all about Sam!!! Them fighting each other in the end was filled with tension regular brothers shouldn’t even have towards each other. Like yes the siren was spurring it on but that shit didn’t come from no where and we all know it!They’re literally obsessed freaks when it comes down to it and I fucking love them for it.

Something about the fact that the Winchesters never really acknowledge the fact that this might be hard for Castiel. Not even in the physical all angels are continuously brainwashed to never question authority level but just on the level that the angels were his family. And hey it might have just been a little bit hard to have my whole world view upended and now I’ve killed my family in droves all for you but you don’t even care that it might have been just the tiniest bit hard for me. Just as long as you don’t gave to kill your little brother right?

What’s even worse is that the narrative bends over backwards to justify it. Like why should the Winchesters care that these are essentially Cas’ siblings when they are objectively evil? The angels used to be complicated with frustrating and contradictory motivations now if you’re not Cas or Lucifer or haven’t magically completely escaped centuries of brainwashing and devotion and family then fuck you I guess and even when you do fuck you still cause your name isn’t Sam or Dean Winchester

Even fucking Michael, objectively the most brainwashed of all, like I know Michael’s not squeaky clean but come on the Winchesters and Cas have done so much worse to earth and heaven, than Michael ever managed too. They literally have no higher ground. But yet their whoooooole plan revolves around Michael going back to his father and it’s this big gotcha moment and not two traumatized adults exploiting the very real traumatic devotion maintained by years of abuse in a moment where Michael literally had the only other source of stability he had for years snatched away from him and it was looking like his only options where to spend eternity in the company of those two clowns. You do this after he literally already helped you and just fought his brother for you? you don’t even try to come up with another plan? Honestly, It just feels malicious. As if Dean can’t understand running back to your father when every other sense of stability has been taken away from you.

Supernatural has shown over and over again that family is only important to Dean and Sam when it’s their family. Because fuck anyone else that tries to pull the same bullshit for their family you’re objectively wrong and Winchesters have the moral high ground and the right to stop/kill you. they are only ever called on this twice in 15 seasons. But come on not even fucking Cas? Cas?
