Released on this day (13 July 1992): “Face to Face”, the lush, soaring collaboration between life-changing English punk band Siouxsie and the Banshees and composer Danny Elfman from the Batman Returns (1992) soundtrack. I’m pretty sure I bought this on “cassingle” at the time! Probably from the long-defunct big Tower Records in Piccadilly! As Batman Returns director Tim Burton explained, he approached the Banshees because “Siouxsie is one of very few women who can create a realistic primal cat sound.” The lyrics offer a glimpse into the conflicted inner psyche of Catwoman, with punk diva Siouxsie Sioux’s dramatic and sensual delivery peppered with little Eartha Kitt-style purrs and growls. It’s sublime! For me, “Face to Face” represents the Banshees’ last truly great single (I was underwhelmed by their final album The Rapture (1995), and they disbanded in 1996). Funnily enough, I know someone who worked on the accompanying video and of course I pumped her for juicy details! She said bassist Severin and drummer Budgie were good-natured, friendly and cooperative. Siouxsie arrived hours later, was more unapproachable and wore a superhuman amount of make-up. "Vacation" is a 1982 song by the American all-female rock band, the Go-Go's. It was released as the first single from their album of the same name and quickly climbed the charts, reaching #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming their second top 10 hit. The song was released on 7" vinyl format, with the surf rock song "Beatnik Beach" as the single's B-side. It also carries the distinction of being released as the first known cassette single or "cassingle".

The music video, directed by Mick Haggery and C.D. Taylor, famously features the band water-skiing and having a lot of fun goofing around. it was shot in one very long day on a $50,000 budget (large for the time) and the group was coming off a debut album that had just reached number. 1 on the charts. "We still saw videos as an annoying waste of time," recalls Jane Wiedlin. "After seven or eight hours we sent out someone to sneak in booze." Kathy Valentine says they drank "lots of champagne. Lots." Wiedlin says the effects are evident during the closeups of the women at the end: "... if you look at our eyes, we're all so drunk. We didn't even try to make it look like we were really waterskiing."
