Parkner Halloween Week Day 4: Leaf Piles, Sweaters, “You just gotta do it.”

Harley squeezes Peter’s hand tightly. It’s a beautiful October day, Morgan’s seventh birthday, and all of the kids - Harley, Peter, Ned, MJ, Abbie, Lila, and Cassie - took the little girl out to the park as the adults prepared for her birthday party later that evening. Harley watches as Abbie and Morgan skip ahead, hand-in-hand, with Lila and Cassie trailing behind, talking tensely and stealing glances ahead at the blonde girl. Sometimes, Abbie will glance back at them, and her face falls, and Harley wishes he could just slap some sense into all three of them. Ned is holding Peter’s other hand, and MJ walks on Harley’s other side. 

It’s a perfect day, really. Peter forced Harley into a white sweater that matches his own, though Harley wears a leather jacket over his, and Peter wears a jean jacket. Ned’s wearing a striped knitted poncho and a hideously deformed pom-pom beanie, knitted by Peter last Christmas with love. MJ wears a knitted sweater patterned with Van Gogh’s Almond Blossom, a gift from Abbie, who declared she needed more color in her wardrobe. Abbie wears a pink turtleneck sweater with white hearts and a grey skirt. Harley had insisted she would be cold, but she pulled on her thigh high boots and effectively ended the argument. Lila, in her black studded sweater, ripped black jeans, and combat boots, is the exact opposite of rosy Abbie, but the way she smiles at the other girl lights up her face. Cassie, wearing overalls, a yellow and white striped sweater, and a flannel around her waist, displays a muted sunniness that complements them both. Morgan, in her sweater dress, knitted tights, Uggs, and braided pigtails - Harley’s handiwork - looks like an angel in the bright autumn sun.

Morgan’s shrieking laugh catches Harley’s attention, and he watches as Abbie and Morgan jump into a leaf pile, making the four girls laugh. Harley can’t help but smile, and he pushes away the burning in his chest.

Peter, of course, notices Harley’s hitched breath. With a glance at Ned that says everything, he drags Harley away from their little line and sits him down on a park bench. “What’s wrong?”

It’s like a dam breaks in Harley, and he just begins talking. “Morgan. She’s seven today, Peter. He should be here to celebrate with her. With us.”

He’s talking about Tony, and by the way Peter flinches, he knows he understands. “I know. I know, Harley, but look at her. She has this big, amazing family, and I know it’s not the same, but she’s going to be okay.”

Harley leans his head on Peter’s shoulder as he watches everyone jumping in leaf piles, MJ snapping pictures with a smile. “Seven, Peter. My seventh birthday was the first one without my father.”

“Oh,” Peter says softly, understanding the words Harley can’t bring himself to say about the years of neglect and heartbreak that hardened him as a child. “I see.”

“He should be here. All dads should get to see their kids grow up and celebrate with them. All kids should have their dads.”

“I know it’s hard to move on,” Peter says softly, and Harley’s not sure whether he’s talking about moving on from Tony’s death or moving on from his father’s abandonment. “But you just gotta do it.”

“Yeah,” Harley breathes, and he hates how shaky his voice sounds. Peter’s hand rubbing comforting circles on his thigh calms him down. “Yeah, I know.”

“It’s okay. We’ll get there.” Peter gently nudges Harley’s head off his shoulder as he stands and extends a hand towards Harley. “What do you say we just celebrate and enjoy the day, relish in the time we have here, now, all of us together?”

Harley takes Peter’s hand with a smile as he stands, brushing a few hot tears from his face. “Sounds like a plan.”

Morgan sees them approaching and runs towards them with her hands outstretched. Harley can’t stop the grin that spreads across his face as he sweeps the little girl up in his arms and swings her up in the air. “Lady Morguna, what have you done to your hair?”

“Sorry, Ley-Ley,” she giggles, using Abbie’s old nickname for him. Morgan presses an apologetic kiss to Harley’s cheek, and Harley catches Peter’s eye over her shoulder.

We’ll be alright, Peter mouths, and Harley smiles gently back.

We’ll be alright.

Technically NOT spoilers for Ant-Man and the Wasp 😊

So, the evil Doctor Stark tries to poison Princess Cassie and King Daddy, two awesome royal Avengers, (“There are royal Avengers. There’s the Kitty King, and I’m sure the Spider Prince said he was from Queens, which makes him a royal.”) with magic cupcakes which would have brainwashed them into doing whatever Doctor Stark wanted them to do. The Princess and King didn’t fall for that trick and refuse to eat the cupcakes, even if they look amazing! So, Doctor Stark got angry and sent his ferocious dragon named ‘Soko Accor’ to attack The Avengers Castle and destroy the royal Avengers. Princess Cassie and King Daddy are caught off guard, cause they are having their afternoon tea (it’s grape juice!) so their tea set goes flying across the room (oops!) and they run to arm themselves with high heels and handbags (“because Mommy said they’re a girl’s greatest weapon”, “yeah, she almost took my eye out with one of those things!”) They have to navigate the laser maze and tunnels in the dungeon, but then the dragon ‘Soko Accor’ spits out fire, and the floor becomes lava. The Princess and King jump across the lava pit and reach the dragon, and, with their mighty weapons, strike the beast to the ground. (“Um, Scott, didn’t you spend all last night making that thing?”, “Yeah, you’re problem being? Dude, we just saved your butt from being burnt from the evil dragon! Be more grateful!”) Princess Cassie and King Daddy save the day, and they also find the magic spell to make the cupcakes not poisonous and they eat them all and Queen Mommy gets annoyed that the Princess won’t eat her dinner later but oh well it was the best day this week and next week they’re climbing Everest with polar bears so who cares?
