- Claremont v Richards is such a well done, realistic political race oh my god it hangs over the whole book it's immaculate

- leaked emails is like a whole fuckin plot point that gets built up to

- Bea is recovering from a major health issue...

- Alex has a sister her name is June and she's a DELIGHT

- there's a whole poly-ish relationship with Nora, June, and Pez

- Liam, Alex's friend from high school

- Alex, not realizing he's bi until it's blindingly obvious to everyone else

- the fuckery that gets Alex on a plane to London after the emails were leaked

- Luna, a gay hispanic senator who is like the center of politics for 2/3 of the book

- Alex overworking himself on the campaign to try not to love Henry

- disagreements between Ellen and Oscar

- Catherine, Bea and Henry's mum

- a shit ton of nuance into Henry's feelings on the UK's queer history and Alex's finding his queer identity

- Henry goes to therapy! his dad dying is like a major part of his life and it's really beautifully handled

- Amy's life! her wife!

I missed like... a couple of days b/c of holiday travels and bad vibes. But I finally have some words I like, so as a treat I'm gonna share kind of a lot???

He’s vaguely aware that he has a large shadow lurking in the doorway, keeping one eye on the girls inside and one eye on him, leaning against the building amongst the smokers. He can’t stand the silent watching. “You don’t have to follow me out here.” “That’s actually specifically in the job description,” Cash’s deep voice replies. “They had the line: Must follow the Presidential Candidate’s kid around a club in Rio?” At least Cash chuckles at that — it wasn’t even Alex’s best work. Alex thinks he hears Cash mutter, “Lawyers' kids.” He can’t be sure. Alex looks up at Cash. “Can I ask you a question?” “Go for it.” “Have you done this before?” he asks. Then, as Cash opens his mouth, he adds, “Like with people’s kids. Or young adults or whatever.” His hands gesture so abstractly that he’s pretty sure he almost hits someone’s cigarette out of their hands. Whatever. Cash would defend him. Cash smiles, and Alex doesn’t know him that well, but it feels like it might be kind, tender even. A bit fond. “I have.” “Do they all end up super fucked up?” From the surprised laugh Cash lets out, Alex knows he doesn’t have to clarify his meaning. After a second, and a glance inside to check on Nora and June, Cash looks back down at Alex with that same smile on his face.  “Who ever said being fucked up was a bad thing?” He responds, answering Alex’s question with another question. “Some of my favorite people are ‘super fucked up,’ as you put it.” In that case, Alex figures that the two of them are gonna get along pretty well.

Please Don’t Hate Me

I need to start by stating that I really liked the Red, White, and Royal Blue movie. The cast and crew were amazing and this was a sorely necessary movie in the queer community as far as representation goes. I am also really bad at separating a movie from its source material. So this is just an opinion on some representation, both feminine and queer, that I wish had been in the movie.

First, with the female representation. Most obviously, the fact that June was written out, Princess Catherine was absent, and Queen Mary was switched to King James III.

Even while Alex is the main character, June is the heart of the Claremont-Diaz family. Alex and Ellen are too wrapped up in caring for the nation that they can sometimes forget that they need looking after themselves.

Combine this with keeping Ellen married to Oscar (she and Oscar are too similar, but Leo took care of her) and taking away some of her more nurturing characteristics (good thing bad thing), Alex’s family seems less supportive in the movie than the book.

This is similar to the problem I have with removing Princess Catherine. Henry has Bea’s support, but with the watered down Bea, that’s almost an empty corner. Princess Catherine is what forces the Queen to support Henry and Alex, and that is the first time Henry has felt a parent’s love since his father died. It’s just so important to his story, but I can understand why it was cut.

But why did they have to water Bea down so much? I don’t need the Powder Princess scandal, but if Bea is Henry’s only support, show that she is strong enough to back him for real. Throw her in a leather jacket, send her out to a party with the group, and show an electric guitar in the corner of the music room. It didn’t have to be anything big, but give her back her fire!

Then there’s Queen Mary, which I don’t really mind the switch since it gave us Stephen Fry as King James and the prime minister was a woman. I just felt like it lost some of the symbolism of the female heads of the nations and their opposite viewpoints on FirstPrince and tradition.

Lastly, there’s Nora. I liked her, I really did, but I wish they had mentioned that she went to MIT, even just Alex calling her MIT like he does in the book. There are places of higher learning, particularly in STEM, that kept women out for far too long. It would have been a great boost to show a woman being a graduate of the most well known technical institute in the country.

The only woman I was completely satisfied with was Zahra, they kept her as tough as nails!

Before I start on queer representation, remember that I do realize how important this movie is as a mainstream representation of queer love. However:

By taking out June, they took away the June/Nora/Pez relationship. I personally think that June and Nora were in a relationship and Pez just joined in while he’s in town. But still, a polyamorous secondary relationship in a rom com would have been nice.

That also takes away Nora’s bisexuality, which is just bi erasure! (And I know Alex says he’s bi, but that scene when Zahra calls him and Henry homosexuals bothers me! It erases Alex’s bisexuality!)

Rafael Luna was a huge impact on Alex, and showing an openly gay senator would have been amazing.

I am glad that, since they only kept one secret service agent, that they kept Amy. However, I do miss Cash and his pansexual jean jacket!

Moving on to Amy, I don’t mind that they didn’t mention that she is trans, especially since she is played by a trans actress and that was only brought up in Alex’s thoughts in the book. I do wish she had brought up her wife. There was such a good window of opportunity when she and Alex are talking about her dog. “You know my wife and I named our dog Jonathan.”

The addition of Miguel Ramos brings in the “gays are evil and vindictive” stereotype. Especially considering he was the only other openly queer person in the movie

On a lighter, headcanon note, I see Bea as at least ace, if not aroace, which sucks that it wasn’t included, but it makes sense since it’s not canon. Also, Princess Catherine cuffs her jeans, so she’s obviously bi lol

Again, the book is perfection, and I love the movie in its own right too. These are just some things that were missed or added that I wish changed in the movie!

The more I think about it, the more the RWRB fandom is winning because what do you mean we have a book (with a collector edition!) AND an amazingly written film AND an upcoming sequel??

The difference in the film vs book makes it even better because now there’s 2 versions and they’re both good and canon!!

One of my fav changes in the film is that Alex passed Henry his key in exchange for the ring so they both held on to a piece of each other when the leak happened. And that Alex was the one who played the song in the V&A right after Henry said he always wanted to dance with someone he loved there like omg 😭

I just choose whichever bits I prefer and now the mashed up version in my head is the best of both worlds and damn we are so well-fed!!

Im not even going to get started on AO3 content cause the pairing has over 10k fics so it’s just a buffet there.

And of course Taylor and Nic are both such incredible actors. Like honestly what is there not to love about RWRB!!

Here's a list (in no particular order of funny moments of others with regards to First Prince):

Cash opening the door of the supply closet: "This looks Cozy" - "Yep, we're really Bonding."

Bromance Alerts - Comment "OMFG, Make Out Already."

Luns: "Instead, let's talk about your little European vacation. Can I expect a joint Christmas present from you and the Prince this year." Alex avoids it, later, "Okay, okay. He's a looker, huh?" "Yeah, I mean, if you're into, like, fairy tail princes." "Is anyone not?" "I'm not." "Right."

Alex calls on Christmas. Apologizes and goes to hang up. Henry: "Alex, Christ. It's fine. It's half two here, everyone's gone to bed. Except Bea. Say hi, Bea. "Hi Alex! Henry's got his candy-cane Jim-jams on -" "That's quite enough."

Later, June: "Oh my god, Alex, you made a friend!" ... "I'm so proud of you." "... He's not my friend..." ... "Nope. Tell me everything about your new best friend, who a royal. That's so bougie of you. Who would have guessed it? Omg this is like all those romantic comedies where the girl hires a male escort to pretend to be her wedding date and then falls in love with him for real." "That is not at all what this is like."

June's reaction to the Polo Match: "I'm sorry, Zahra said you're bailing on the fund-raiser this weekend because you're going to a polo match in Connecticut?" "Listen, I'm trying to keep up a geopolitical public relations ruse here." "Dude, people are writing fan fiction about ya'll -" "Yeah, Nora sent me that." " - I think you can give it a rest." "The Crown wants me there!" (in his thoughts, Alex notes a look that he should be concerned about if he wasn't thinking about Henry's mouth.

At the match. Amy: "I don't like that look. You look... sweaty." "I'm gonna go, uh, say hi to Henry." "Please don't elaborate." "Yeah, I know. Plausible deniability." "I don't know what you possibly mean." "Sure. Yep." "Enjoy your summit with the English delegation."

Zahra sends him a link to the "Best Bromance Ever" and writing "Good work, you little shit." Oh, Zahra, if only you knew.

Alex's Hickey. Zahra: "Is that a Hickey?" "I... um, no?" "Do I look stupid to you, Alex? Who is giving you hickeys and why have you not gotten them to sign an NDA." "OMG, if I needed an NDA, you would know. Chill." Zahra does not appreciate being told to Chill and goes onto threaten him.

Pez answering Alex's phone call to Henry. "Alexander, babes. How lovely for you to give your auntie Pezza a ring on this magnificent Sunday Morning." "Hi Pez, where are y'all?" "We are out for a drive, taking in the scenery of Carmarthenshire. Say Good Morning to your strumpet, Henry." "Good Morning, strumpet. What's got you up at four in the morning this time?" ... later, Alex gets Henry to say the name of where he's staying and Pez says, "I was hoping you two would start talking dirty, please do go on."

There's more but this is long. This book is just so funny.

so yeah i've been tucked away all holiday weekend, pouring over my Domestication of Household Spiders sequel and.... i'm way closer to finished than I thought i'd be?? it's only 10k right now, but about 70% done, I think?

anyway. again, i could not limit myself to 7 sentences. have 10:

“I’m always careful.”

Julián guffaws, loudly. A few strangers’ heads turn their direction to gawk at Spider-Man and a street vendor chatting like old friends. “Always bullshittin’, more like.”

Alex rolls his eyes and hopes his mask cooperates to show it. He ignores the comment, and digs in his suit's small pockets to pay him as Julián holds out the paper tray of finished tacos. “I’ve got cash on me today, I’ve got you-”

“No way.” Julián holds up his palms. “Not since you covered our diapers last week, I’m not taking any more of your money. Lunch is on me.”

Side note: Would anyone who speaks spanish (or even some spanish, the bits i used aren't complex) be willing to proof read a, different, small section for me? I can barely speak a word of it, so I used google and... there's no way google was perfect. ya know? lmk, dm me! <3

so whatever ship i want for this one became firstfire - just in time for the 911 premiere 2nite - granted other than Buck being in it there's nothing to do with the premiere lolz

Alex isn’t even sure what happened. Somehow, he lost the rest of Liam’s bachelor party; they were there just a moment ago, he swears, and now he is on some street he doesn’t know in LA by himself. He didn’t think it was possible, but somehow, he even managed to slip Cash, something he doesn’t believe ever happened, at least not when he wasn’t trying. He looks back at the bar they came out of and decides to go back in. He figures that once Cash realizes he’s not with the group, he’ll double back to find him. It was drilled into his head years ago that if he were separated from Cash to stay in the locale they last had been, he would find him.

Alex is sitting at the bar nursing another drink when the man sits down; he’s cute. He has the body of someone who does at least some sort of physical labor, not the kind earned just from going to the gym. He has lighter hair and curls that Alex wants to dive his fingers into. Huh, maybe he gets what everyone always says about his hair and curls now.

The man next to him turns to Alex, and his eyes have a spark of something he’s not sure he can define. “So, what brings you back in?”

Huh? “I’m sorry, what?”’

“You left with your group, and now you’re back alone. Either you came back to avoid someone in your group or to see or meet someone here.

“And what if I say it was actually that I got distracted and lost them and know that at least one of them will come back here to find me.”

“So, you didn’t purposefully escape your secret service agent then?”

“I’m sorry…” Alex trails off, unsure how to finish his sentence.

“Sorry, I suppose I should introduce myself since I know who you are.” He holds his hand out, and Alex takes it in his. It’s remarkably soft for someone he still assumes does manual labor. “I’m Evan Buckley, but everyone calls me Buck.”

“Well, hi Buck, I’m Alex, but you know that.”

They continue talking, and it’s nearly a half hour before Alex realizes his hand is still in Buck’s. It’s an hour before he moves it, and that’s just because it’s losing circulation at the angle he’s resting it on the bar. Not long after that, when Cash returns and finds him, Buck’s number is in his phone, and he has plans to call him the next day so they can meet up for lunch.
