Today, ProPublica reports on yet another big change that stands to solve a decades-long problem we first learned about back in 2016, closing a huge loophole that allowed states to divert federal antipoverty funds to governors’ pet projects, like promoting abstinence, holding “heathy marriage” classes that did nothing to prevent out-of-wedlock births, funding anti-abortion “clinics” to lie about abortion “risks,” sending middle-class kids to private colleges, and other schemes only tangentially related to helping poor kids. It’s the same loophole that Mississippi officials tried to drive a truck through to divert welfare funds to former sportsball man Brett Favre’s alma mater, for a volleyball palace. [ ]

The agency has proposed new rules — open for public comment until December 1 — aimed at nudging states to actually use TANF funds to give cash to needy parents, not fill budget holes or punish poor people.

One change will put an end to the scheme Utah used to substitute LDS church funds for welfare, by prohibiting states

from counting charitable giving by private organizations, such as churches and food banks, as “state” spending on welfare, a practice that has allowed legislatures to budget less for programs for low-income families while still claiming to meet federal minimums.

Another new rule will put the kibosh on using TANF to fund child protective services or foster care programs, which are not what TANF is supposed to be for, damn it.

And then there’s the simple matter of making sure that funds for needy families go to needy families, not to pet projects that have little to do with poverty:

The reforms would also redefine the term “needy” to refer only to families with incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty line. Currently, some states spend TANF money on programs like college scholarships — or volleyball stadiums — that benefit more affluent people.

So today is my third year anniversary of me coming out and the start of my transition 🥰🖤

It's been three years since, one of the hardest and best choices of my life. I originally thought I was nonbinary but shortly realized after making that decision, that I was a woman, always have been and just didn't know till then.

I have been struggling a lot with bills, I'm in Desperate need or tires, I almost got in a bad accident the other night because my tires are so bald and it started snowing 😓, I'm just not making enough. I'm in the process of looking for a second job ( not something I want to do 😔) just to scrape by. I'm not even able to buy some necessities some times. I don't have family or anyone to ask for help.

It's really frustrating this time of year, I'm not able to buy any of my loved ones gifts (one of my love languages) or get myself anything I want 😔 every year this time is just so harmful to my mental health, right after this month is my birthday and every year I just hate not being able to do anything or but myself anything nice 😓

Oh hi what’s up. Been a while. My bad 😅

I’ve kinda been in a deep depression and i got fired from my job for being “too slow”… I told them I have a disability and they said it wouldn’t be a problem. Boss even told me that I’m a good paralegal/worker but that she needs someone that’s not “slow” like me 😀

Leaving me without a job around the holidays is just fucked up. Also, my apartment complex is raising the rent by $200!!

Anyways… while I’m looking for work, I’ll be finishing the 2 fics I already have in the works. One is really really long so… 😅.

Heyo! Looking for funds for my mom’s resale business

Ive been putting this off because I didn’t want to seem obnoxious (not that anyone else who asks for help does, I just have anxiety ig) but my mom has recently been struggling with her clothing resale business. She typically sells on Facebook pages specifically for reselling and I assist her with posting and/or shipping. She’s been locked out of a few accounts such as her email and she wants to move to more competitive platforms where she can charge more for her clothes since Facebook hasn’t had much profit (Poshmark, Depop, etc.). This will include needing better model pictures, and possibly even more expensive (and larger amounts of) clothing and/or shipping. She also has a business idea that she’s trying to save enough money to patent. I have three sisters and a disabled father, so it’s hard for my mom to devote enough of her own funds to her business that she’s been working on since before COVID. Her money from doing this has been almost the only thing making her able to provide for us kids, and it takes up a lot of her time and energy. Anything helps!

I got kicked out of my living situation last night after I was physically assaulted by my partner. The vehicle I had been making payments on was in his name, and he's taken it from me. I have to place to stay, no vehicle, and no money. My Cashapp is $KylieLKay, Venmo @Kylie-Kaucher. I walked halfway to work this morning before someone offered me a ride(6 miles). I do have a job, but I'm afraid I'll lose it due to not having any money to survive until next Thursday(payday). I don't have anyone else to reach out to, which is why I'm posting here as my last resort. I could even pay someone back if i could just borrow money until my paycheck, which I know is asking a lot. I'm willing to do whatever it takes. My two cats are also still with him, and I'm worried he'll throw them out or hurt them. I live in a rural city in Alabama, and we don't have any type of shelter or even Uber, Lyft, taxis, etc. here. I'm hoping to find a couch to stay on tonight, but it's not looking good. If I had gas money, someone from work may help. I'm just feeling really suicidal at this point and don't see a light at the end of this tunnel.
