Let's talk about the idolized Aurangzeb. What he did and why is he considered great?
Tumblr media
We will be focusing on the destruction of temples and hindu genocide done by him to debunk claims deny that this.
By the order of Aurangzeb (1645 AD) according to Mirãt-i-Ahmadî, Temple of Chintaman situated close to Sarashpur (Gujarat) and built by Sitaldas jeweller was converted into a mosque named Quwwat-ul-lslam (might of Islam) (1645 AD.) A cow was slaughtered to 'solemnize' the 'ceremony'.
Slaughtering a cow was a heinous choice, cow being one of the holiest animal in Hinduism. As well as, Hinduism prohibits animal slaughter, to do it right where their place of worship used to be where now stands a Mosque was simply to mock and destroy the souls of the indigenous population. The Pandits and Cows were always their main targets.
This was done before he even became the king, he was just a prince at this point.
When he became the king he sent Mir Jumla on an expedition to Cooch Bihar. Mir Jumla demolished ALL temples in that city and erected mosques in their stead. The general himself wielded a battle-axe to break the image of Narayana.
Mirãt-i-Ahmadî continues, In 1666 AD, he ordered the faujdar of Mathura to remove a stone railing which had been presented by Dara Shukoh to the temples of Keshav Rai. He explained: “In the Muslim faith it is a sin even to look at a temple and this Dara had restored a railing in a temple!”
You can still argue that Islamic Colonization simply had a political motif and not a religious one, if that would have been the case, none of the indigenous people would have been harmed, none of them would have been forcefully converted, their heritage would not have been destroyed right in front of their eyes, their schools and texts would have been burned. This is downright evil and was done in the name of Allah by all the Mughal tyrants.
“The richly jewelled idols taken from the infidel temples were transferred to Agra and placed beneath the steps leading to the Nawab Begum Sahib's (Jahanara's) mosque in order that they might be “pressed under foot by the true believers”. Mathura changed its name into Islamabad and was thus called in all official documents.”
In the same year, Sita Ram ji temple at Soron was destroyed as also the shrine of Devi Patan at Gonda. News came from Malwa also that the local governor had sent 400 troopers to destroy all temples around Ujjain.
According to Muraqat-i-Abul Hasan, civil officers, agents of jagirdars, karoris and amlas from Cuttack in Orissa to Medinipur in Bengal were instructed as follows:
“Every idol house built during the last 10 or 12 years' should be demolished without delay. Also, do not allow the crushed Hindus and despicable infidels to repair their old temples. Reports of the destruction of temples should be sent to the court under the seal of the qazis and attested by pious Shaikhs.”
(1672 AD) several thousand Satnamis were slaughtered near Narnaul in Mewat for which act of 'heroism' Radandaz Khan was tided Shuja'at Khan with the mansab of 3000 and 2000 horse.
(1675 AD) Guru Tegh Bahadur was tortured to death for his resistance against the forcible conversion of the Hindus of Kashmir. The destruction of gurudwaras thereafter is a well-known story which our secularists have succeeded in suppressing because the Akali brand Sikhs have been forging ties of friendship with Islam as against their parent faith, Hindu Dharma.
Mirãt-i-Ahmadî goes ahead: “On 6th January 1680 A.D. Prince Mohammad Azam and Khan Jahan Bahadur obtained permission to visit Udaipur. Ruhullah Khan and Yakkattaz Khan also proceeded thither to effect the destruction of the temples of the idolators. These edifices situated in the vicinity of the Rana's palace were among the wonders of the age, and had been erected by the infidels to the ruin of their souls and the loss of their wealth”. Pioneers destroyed the images. On 24th January the king visited the tank of Udayasagar.
His Majesty ordered all three of the Hindu temples to be levelled with the ground. On 29th January Hasan AN Khan made his appearance' and stated that “172 temples in the neighbouring districts had been destroyed.” His Majesty proceeded to Chitor on 22nd February.
Temples to the number of 63 were destroyed. Abu Tarab who had been commissioned to effect the destruction of idol temples of Amber, reported in person on 10th August that 66 temples had been levelled to the ground.’ The temple of Someshwar in western Mewar was also destroyed at a later date in the same year. It may be mentioned that unlike Jodhpur and Udaipur, Amber was the capital of a state loyal to the Mughal emperor.
Khafi Khan records in his Muntakhab-ul-Lubab: ‘On the capture of Golconda, the Emperor appointed Abdur Rahim Khan as censor of the city of Haiderabad with orders to put down infidel practices and innovations, and destroy the temples and build mosques on the sites.’ That was in 1687 AD. In 1690 AD, he ordered destruction of temples at Ellora, Trimbakeshwar, Narasinghpur, and Pandharpur.
Aurangzeb also destroyed, Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Kashi, Uttar Pradesh - which considered as the most scared hindu temple and land.
In 1698 AD, the story was repeated at Bijapur. According to Mirat-i-AhmadT: 'Hamidud-din Khan Bahadur who had been deputed to destroy the temples of Bijapur and build mosques there, returned to court after carrying out the order and was praised by the Emperor.' As late as 1705 AD, two years before he died, 'the emperor, summoning Muhammad Khalil and Khidmat Rai, the darogha of hatchet-men' ordered them to demolish the temple of Pandharpur, and to take the butchers of the camp there and slaughter cows in the temple.' Cow-slaughter at a temple site was a safeguard against Hindus rebuilding it on the same spot.
The saddest part is, all of this information, the bloodiest part of Indian History is never shown to the people, they grow up learning, Mughals were great emperors that built great things. When none of that holds any ounce of truth. It should be said without any censorship, these tyrants destroyed the culture, tradition and religions of India.
With all this information, if you're still defending these tyrants, if you still "want them around", if you still insist "it wasn't that bad", you absolutely do not care about "human rights", every activism you take part in is just performative. And I do not respect you or your opinion on any social issue.

In 1971, paramilitary forces associated with the party collaborated with the Pakistan Army in mass killings of Bangladeshi nationalists and pro-intellectuals.[14][15][16][17][18][19][20]
Upon the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, the new government banned Jamaat-e-Islami from political participation since the government was secular and some of its leaders went into exile in Pakistan. Following the assassination of the first president and the military coup in 1975, the ban on the Jamaat was lifted and the new party Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh was formed. Exiled leaders were allowed to return. Abbas Ali Khan was the acting Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh. The Jamaat agenda is the creation of an "Islamic state" with the Sha'ria legal system, and outlawing "un-Islamic" practices and laws. For this reason, it interpretes their central political concept "Iqamat-e-Deen" as establishing Islamic state by possession of state power

New Zealand is still in the series despite Iftikhar Ahmed's futile 60 off 24
Tumblr media
Pakistan was defeated by New Zealand by four runs in a match that should have ended in a blowout. By edging Pakistan out by four runs at the end, New Zealand keeps themselves alive in this series by the tiniest of margins. Iftikhar Ahmed appeared to have sealed the deal with a breathtaking onslaught of hitting in a game that was alive until Haris Rauf's slog was snared at cow corner and a triumphant New Zealand celebrated with an improvisational stage of honor across the ground. Pakistan was on the verge of a historic heist when his 60 off 24 balls came at a time when they were almost certain to lose. But when Iftikhar hit a hole shot with three balls remaining, Jimmy Neesham held his nerve, and the victory that should have been New Zealand's an hour earlier was finally declared. New Zealand had posted 163 - their most elevated score of the series - because of 50 years from their commander Tom Latham, and appearances further down the request, as they got away from the grip of Pakistan's bowling in the last nine overs and guaranteed their bowlers would have something to shield. On a day when Pakistan's touch and timing were consistently lacking, the bowlers, on the other hand, magnificently rose to the occasion. The top unit of the hosts failed, while the middle unit was blown away by a neat, disciplined New Zealand team that caught particularly well and appeared to be in for a big payday. Iftikhar and Faheem Ashraf, who hit a handy 27 off 14 balls, made sure that the reward would come later, but Neesham made sure that it wouldn't be completely denied.
Latham Focus
There was little evidence that Latham's innings would not be a match-losing one for the majority of the first half. Toward the finish of the powerplay, he had scratched his direction to 19 off 21 conveyances. Afterward, he wasn't faring much better against the twist of Imad Wasim and Shadab Khan by the same token; He only made 34 of 32 by the end of the 11th, keeping his team just above six. In any case, Latham would at last wrench through the pinion wheels, and Imad and Shadab felt the overwhelming power of it. A club down the ground off Imad in the twelfth over for four establishes the vibe, and out of nowhere, the shackles fell off. Before the over was over, he deposited one into the stands with skillful footwork; Shadab's fate was worse. Before Latham ramped Shaheen Afridi for six to begin the 16th over and slapped Rauf away for another boundary the following over, Daryll Mitchell plundered him for 16. Even though Latham was bowled by Rauf on the next legal delivery, despite New Zealand's sudden dominance, Rauf's innings of 64 from 49 balls won him Player of the Match honors, which seemed unlikely for the captain of New Zealand at the halfway point.
Henry's bravery, Milne's eclecticism
Adam Milne has had spoiled karma with wounds all through his profession. Even though he was one of New Zealand's best bowlers in the first T20I on Friday, his extreme pace and a packed schedule don't always go together. Because of this, prudence dictated that he be rested the following day. As a result, Milne demonstrated that he is capable of posing a threat to any opposition, even though he was well-rested over the weekend. Babar Azam hung his bat out at a slightly wider angle after a first over of equal pace and swing. The sideways movement produced a wicket by drawing the outer edge. Mohammad Rizwan lost another wicket as a result of reckless running and sharp fielding with Matt Henry at the other end equally effective at stifling the batters. Pakistan had only scored 35 points and was down two at the end of the powerplay. Pakistan's chase would continue to be significantly influenced by New Zealand's two frontline bowlers. Pakistan was left reeling at 88 for 7 when Milne returned to force Shadab out of his first ball and back into the attack in the 15th over. Yet, the two wouldn't have it all their way, since even with one more 76 expected for triumph from just 35 balls and three wickets remaining, Pakistan was going to turn this game on its head.
Faheem Assist Iftikhar
Pakistan had fallen into the abyss, but Iftikhar and Faheem began to raise them once more almost as if a passing ship had given them life jackets. Neesham was brought back for his third over when Pakistan demanded 72 runs in the final five overs. Those were the first signs of life from Iftikhar, who was beginning to establish himself within the team under scrutiny: His signature shot of a six over wide long-on was preceded by a four, and Faheem added another after that. A by and large quelled Gaddafi swarm kept on gripping to trust, and the leave doors, hurling just minutes sooner, started to see traffic switch back in. But Milne's final over was the one that threatened to take the game away from the visitors, as another 46 runs were needed off the remaining 18 deliveries. 23 runs were scored, including three huge sixes, thanks to missed lengths and a batting pair who were in the zone.
Death-overs craze
Yet, Henry, by a long shot New Zealand's champion bowler on the day, had his say again. Undeterred by Faheem slapping ceaselessly over midwicket for six more to get the condition down to 15 from ten balls, Henry endeavored a yorker, as Faheem attempted to get under it, and holed out to Mitchell at long-on. Iftikhar suddenly needed to farm the strike when he was down eight wickets, which he only got after No. 10 Naseem Shah finished the 19th over by removing three dots in a row. Iftikhar reached his fifty from only 20 deliveries in that over. It looked as though the hapless Neesham would confront the brunt of Iftikhar's severity again, particularly when a six and a four decreased the objective to five off three conveyances. However, Neesham has previously faced pressure; After all, this is the player New Zealand sent to the World Cup final against the Super Over. He went full again, and Mitchell was there at long-on to hold on once more after Iftikhar made a slight error in his shot. With Rauf on strike, the final man, it was down to five to win from two balls. Rauf was initially fooled by a short pass, and then, with nothing to lose, he attempted to lob the final ball over the cow corner. It was quickly obvious from Mitchell's response that it wasn't adequately large. He started to celebrate when Chad Bowes caught the ball at deep midwicket. This ended a great night and kept New Zealand's mathematical interest in this series going.
Conclusion
New Zealand secured a narrow four-run win over Pakistan in their T20 cricket match to keep themselves alive in the series. Captain Tom Latham top-scored with 50 as New Zealand set Pakistan 163 to win. While Pakistan appeared to be out of contention when they lost their seventh wicket at 88, Iftikhar Ahmed hit a rapid 60 off 24 balls to take them close to victory. However, Jimmy Neesham took a vital wicket in the penultimate over to give New Zealand the win. Matt Henry was New Zealand's best bowler, taking three wickets for just 23 runs. The third T20 match of the series will take place on 20 April. Read the full article

The Current Argument: Ajaz Khan vs. Rajveer Sisodia
Drama frequently develops on Indian social media platforms with the ferocity of a big-budget film. The ongoing romance between Ajaz Khan and Rajveer Sisodia has captured the attention of viewers recently and generated unavoidable buzz. Let's examine the specifics of this intense dispute and find out why it's generating so much buzz.
Tumblr media
The First Battle
The conflict between Ajaz Khan and Rajveer Sisodia is not a new development. Ajaz Khan has been threatening people on YouTube for a while now, and Rajveer Sisodia has said he will face him in Mumbai. The excitement intensified till Rajveer—who was lodging at the Hilton Mumbai International Airport hotel—arrived in Mumbai. After that, he released a video in which he challenged Ajaz Khan to meet him.
A String of Unfulfilled Meetings
When Ajaz Khan replied on Instagram and said he was at one place and would shortly be moving to another, the situation intensified. Eager to see him, Rajveer Sisodia hurried to the designated spot and bided his time. In spite of his assertions, Ajaz Khan was not appearing, as he explained in a reel he shared. Both sides continued to accuse one another of dodging the confrontation during this back and forth.
Public Views and Responses
As the situation developed, public opinion started to change. There were a lot of people who started thinking that Rajveer Sisodia was avoiding Ajaz Khan because he was afraid of him, which made people laugh at him. In response, Rajveer sent out a reel outlining his reasons for avoiding conflict. He emphasized his obligations to his friends and the legal ramifications of a fight of this nature in a different state. Rajveer underlined the need to avoid enforcing one's own laws and the fine line that separates bravery from stupidity. Also Read: Dhruv Rathee 9th FAIL? Rajveer's Explanation
Many others found resonance in Rajveer Sisodia's answer, which clarified the intricacies of the circumstance. He made the point that any disagreement may be deadly because his buddy, Okendra Rana from Haryana, had multiple open cases. His wary demeanor was heightened by his concern about falling victim to harsh legal measures such as the MCOCA Act. Finally, Rajveer promised accountability and openness, saying he would go back to Mumbai and let his supporters know ahead of time.
The Trending Topic: Nitin Chandila
Amidst the Rajveer-Ajaz drama, prominent YouTuber Nitin Chandila's video also gained notice. Even though it was too gruesome to share in its entirety, his video went viral. Nitin's heated and contentious content fueled the already burning social media scene, despite his wife's attempts to stop him.
The Poorva Jha Apology
Another well-known social media personality, Poorva Jha, also encountered criticism over a spelling error in a recent video regarding the NEET exam. He spelled it incorrectly, writing "N-E-A-T" instead of "N-E-E-T." He issued a public apology, owning up to the mistake and adding a note to his video to clarify the oversight. The scrutiny and pressure that social media influencers must endure to retain their credibility were brought to light by this episode.
Twitter Conflicts and Court Cases
Social media is a battleground in addition to a platform for entertainment. Flying Beast and The Deshbhakt got into a heated Twitter spat on power outages in Gurgaon, and BJP leader Suresh Nakhwa launched a defamation suit against Dhruv Rathee. The issue got worse when Dhruv Rathee replied by forwarding an older tweet from Suresh Nakhwa. These examples highlight how unstable internet relationships may be and the implications they have offline.
Tumblr media
Mistaken Stunts: Farhad Azam Shaikh
Farhad Azam Shaikh's tale, which gained notoriety for his daring feats on Mumbai local trains, tragically changed course. He suffered the loss of both an arm and a leg following another risky act. This episode is a clear warning of the risks involved with pursuing internet celebrity by risky behavior.
Partings and Fresh Starts
TV actor Kush Shah, most known for his part in "Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah," departed the show to continue his education in the United States. The cast of the show bid him a fond farewell upon his departure. Raj Grover, meanwhile, came under fire for a video that some saw as demeaning to domestic workers, even though he later emphasized that it was meant to be a humorous parody.
The Dilemma Around Selfies
Finally, a controversy was triggered by the widely shared video of actress Taapsee Pannu graciously declining to take a selfie with influencer Ananya at an event. On social media, Ananya voiced her bewilderment and dismay, wondering why Taapsee would decline a photo in front of cameras.
Tumblr media
In summary
With social media platforms serving as both a stage and a battlefield, the boundaries between entertainment and real life are becoming increasingly hazy in the digital era. These tales serve as a warning about the dangers and influence of social media. What do you think of these current dramas? Post your opinions in the space provided below. Read the full article

More rain will only make these patches worse, delay the game further or even cause an abandonment without any further action. - September11202312:39 (IST) - September11202312:32 (IST)IND vs PAK Live: India to play against Sri Lanka and BangladeshThough India are to play two more matches -- against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh -- in the Super 4s, there's no guarantee that those matches won't see washouts. Hence, rain-marred contests, including the match against Pakistan, aren't very beneficial for the Indian team. - September11202312:29 (IST)IND vs PAK Live: What happens in case of a washout on the reserve day?In a case where the India vs Pakistan match in the Super 4 stage gets washed out, points will be shared between the two teams. Such a scenario would take Pakistan's tally to 3 points which will help them remain top of the points table while India will remain third with 1 point in their kitty. A washout, hence, could prove dangerous for the Indian team if they fail to win at least one of their next two matches. With Sri Lanka already securing one win, they remain ahead of India in the points table. - September11202312:12 (IST)India vs Pakistan: Heavy rainfall predictedHeavy rains and thunderstorms are predicted on Monday evening in Colombo. The match is at the mercy of rain gods. In case of a washout, India will be at a disadvantageous situation. - September11202311:44 (IST)IND vs PAK Live: Game to resume at 3 PMIt looks like the game might just resume at the designated time of 3:00 PM IST but there remains a 70-80 percent chance of rain from 4 pm. WASHINGTON (AP) — Pakistan’s law minister says he expects a tougher armed response in the event of any repeat of political violence in the country, accusing followers of former Prime Minister Imran Khan of exploiting the initial “motherly” response to fiery rampages last month.
In an interview with The Associated Press during a visit to Washington, Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar issued some of the most extensive comments from Pakistan's government on its response to the fiery protests last month against the detention of charismatic former premier Imran Khan. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s government and army are now defending their actions in pursuing both civilian and military trials for at least 102 civilian protesters.
“The state’s reaction was like a motherly reaction towards the citizens,” Tarar told the AP, adding, "that is why the government has decided to deal with iron hands and to make it an example, to ensure that no such incidents take place in the future.”
In the interview late last week, Tarar also defended law enforcement and military officials against criticism they didn’t do enough at the time to stop the violence. Any military response to restore law and order would have required prior authorization from the civilian government, he said.
He described a military and civilian leadership taken by surprise by the attacks on military installations and other sites. The leaders opted to refrain from harming civilians, the minister said. But now, the response is tougher.
“I would say we have learned a lesson,” from the incident, he said, “that if you don’t exercise enough authority and force, you may end up with these kinds of incidents, which … was very painful.”
Tarar also said that legal authorities would not be deterred from prosecuting Khan if investigators determine he appeared to play a criminal role in the attacks, despite concerns that could unleash a fresh wave of violence.
Khan and his followers have been working for his return to political power, alleging that Americans were behind the 2022 no-confidence vote that cost him the premiership.
The demonstrations erupted among supporters of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party after authorities arrested Khan in a graft case, dragging him from a courthouse in the capital, Islamabad.
Thousands of demonstrators attacked the military headquarters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, stormed an air base in Mianwali in the eastern Punjab province and torched a building housing state-run Radio Pakistan in the northwest.
The violence subsided only after Khan was released on an order from Pakistan’s Supreme Court.
At least 10 people were killed in clashes between Khan’s supporters and police and since then, and police have arrested more than 5,000 people in connection with the riots. Most have been freed on bail pending trial.
Pakistan’s military said Monday that it has fired three senior army officers over their failure to prevent the attacks.
In additional to prosecutions in civilian court, Pakistan’s military says it has received cases of 102 civilians for their trials in the military courts over their involvement and the accused persons will get the right of a fair trial. Asked how many civilians he expects to ultimately be tried in military courts in connection with the May 9 violence, Tarar said he did not expect the 102 figure to increase “many fold.”
When asked why the military didn’t do more to stop the attacks as they were happening, Tarar said nobody in the military thought people would breach military installations, “because military protect the homeland.”
The same, he said, goes for the attacks on public monuments to national heroes, saying such a thing is “unheard of in our history.”
Amnesty International has objected to the Pakistan military’s plans, saying that trying civilians in military courts is a violation of international law.
The rights group said it had documented numerous rights violations in Pakistani military courts’ past trials of civilians, including lack of due process and transparency, coerced confessions, and executions after “grossly unfair” proceedings.

US Congressman Pens Letter to Blinken over Imran Khan’s (PTI's) 'Political Victimisation'
Urges US to 'guide Pakistan policy toward a greater commitment to human rights'
- Express Tribune | April 12, 2023
Tumblr media
United States (US) Congressman Brad Sherman
United States (US) Congressman Brad Sherman shared a letter on Wednesday that he has written to Secretary of State Antony Blinken over "democracy in Pakistan", and more specifically, the alleged "political victimisation" of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Earlier in March, the Democratic party congressman had released a video message and urged the US administration to support democracy and human rights in the country; sounding alarm over what he said, the “alleged custodial torture and sexual abuse of political figures” such as PTI leaders Shahbaz Gill and Azam Swati.
Now, in a letter dated April 11, the California lawmaker has asked Biden to “guide the US’ Pakistan policy toward a greater commitment to human rights and to use all US diplomatic channels to urge Pakistani authorities to investigate the alleged abuses and to hold accountable anybody who may be responsible”.
Tumblr media
“I urge the authorities to make sure that going forward political figures or citizens who simply want to demonstrate are not subjected to anti-democratic consequences,” he said.
Sherman made special mention of the "several cases" registered against PTI chief Imran Khan, "the alleged torture and even sexual abuse of political figures" like Shahbaz Gill and journalist Jameel Farooqui, "the use of force" against Imran's supporters, "the detention of protestors under sweeping counter-terrorism laws" as well as the "closing of space for free speech".
He also expressed deep concern over Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah's remarks for "insinuating" that the PTI chief "will be eliminated from the political arena.
Further, the letter also took note of the delay in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa elections calling it "another sign of skirting democratic processes".
“The United States does not involve itself in Pakistan’s internal governmental matters — I respect its Constitution and its democratic process — but we must not shy away from raising our voice when the human rights of the Pakistani people are at stake," he said.
Meanwhile, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry welcomed the move urging other lawmakers around the world to also "raise issue of human rights abuses in their jurisdictions as well".

Twitter: Ch Fawad Hussain@fawadchaudhry. Letter by a senior member of USA Congress Foreign Affairs committee to Secretary Blinkin shows the growing concerns of international community on the HR abuses in Pak by a fascist Govt, I call upon EU and UK Parliamentarians to raise issue of HR abuses in their jurisdictions as well.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested and dragged from court Tuesday as he appeared to face charges in multiple graft cases, a dramatic escalation of political tensions that sparked violent demonstrations by his angry supporters across the country.
The arrest of Khan, who was ousted in a no-confidence vote in April 2022 but remains the leading opposition figure, represented the latest confrontation to roil Pakistan, which has seen former prime ministers arrested over the years and interventions by its powerful military.
At least one person was reported killed in clashes between protesters and the military in Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province, with another five people wounded there, while about 15 injuries were reported amid similar violence in Karachi, Peshawar, Rawalpindi and Lahore. Police fired tear gas to disperse demonstrations.
Amid the violence, officials at Pakistan’s telecommunication authority said regulators blocked social media, including Twitter, and internet service was suspended in the capital of Islamabad and other cities. Classes at some private schools were canceled for Wednesday.
Khan was removed from the Islamabad High Court by security agents from the National Accountability Bureau, said Fawad Chaudhry, a senior official with his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, and then shoved into an armored car and whisked away.
Chaudhry denounced the arrest of the 71-year-old former cricket star as “an abduction.” Pakistan’s independent GEO TV broadcast video of Khan being hauled away.
A scuffle broke out between Khan’s supporters and police outside the court. Some of Khan’s lawyers and supporters were injured in the melee, as were several police, Chaudhry said.
Khan was taken to the garrison city of Rawalpindi, near Islamabad, for questioning at the offices of the National Accountability Bureau, according to police and government officials. He also was to undergo a routine medical checkup, police said.
Khan had arrived at the Islamabad High Court from nearby Lahore, where he lives, to face charges in the graft cases.
He has denounced the cases against him, which include terrorism charges, as a politically motivated plot by his successor, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, saying his ouster was illegal and a Western conspiracy. Khan has campaigned against Sharif and demanded early elections.
Tuesday’s arrest was based on a new warrant from the National Accountability Bureau obtained last week in a separate graft case for which Khan had not been granted bail. His lawyers challenged the legality of the arrest, but the court upheld it, although it added that Khan should not have been forcibly removed from the courtroom. Khan is scheduled to appear at an anti-graft tribunal on Wednesday, officials said.
“Imran Khan has been arrested because he was being sought in a graft case,” Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan told a news conference. He alleged Pakistan’s treasury had lost millions of dollars while Khan was in office due to illegal purchases of lands from a business tycoon.
The National Accountability Bureau is Pakistan’s powerful anti-corruption organization that has detained and investigated former officials, including prime ministers, politicians and retired military officers. But some view the NAB as a tool used by those in power, especially the military, to crack down on political opponents. When Khan was in power, his government arrested Sharif, then the opposition leader, through the NAB.
At a news conference, Law Minister Azam Tarar said Khan was arrested because he was not cooperating with the investigations. He also denounced the violence by Khan supporters, saying that protests must remain peaceful.
“It should have not happened,” he said, shortly after TV video emerged of burning vehicles and damaged public property in parts of the country.
Authorities said they have banned rallies in the eastern province of Punjab.
As the news of the arrest spread, about 4,000 of Khan’s supporters stormed the official residence of the top regional commander in Lahore, smashing windows and doors, damaging furniture and staging a sit-in as troops there retreated to avoid violence. The protesters also burned police vehicles and blocked key roads.
Protesters also smashed the main gate of the army’s headquarters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, where troops exercised restraint. Hundreds of demonstrators shouted pro-Khan slogans as they moved toward the sprawling building.
In the port city of Karachi, police swung batons and fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of Khan supporters who had gathered on a key road.
Raoof Hasan, another leader from Khan’s party, told Al Jazeera English television that the arrest is “blatant interference in the judicial affairs by the powers-that-be.” Hasan added that Khan “was virtually abducted from the court of law.”
Khan’s arrest came hours after he issued a video message before heading to Islamabad, saying he was “mentally prepared” for arrest there.
Khan was wounded by a gunman at a rally in November, an attack that killed one of his supporters and wounded 13. He has insisted, without offering any evidence, that there is a plot to assassinate him, alleging that Pakistan’s spy agency was behind the conspiracy. The gunman was immediately arrested and police later released a video of him in custody, allegedly saying he had acted alone.
In a strongly worded statement Monday, the military accused Khan of “fabricated and malicious allegations” of its involvement in the November shooting, saying they are “extremely unfortunate, deplorable and unacceptable.”
The military has directly ruled Pakistan for more than half of the 75 years since the country gained independence from British colonial rule, and wields considerable power over civilian governments.
Sharif, whose government faces spiraling economic woes and is struggling to recover from last year’s devastating floods that killed hundreds and caused $30 billion in damage, slammed Khan for assailing the military.
“Let this be abundantly clear that you, as former prime minister, currently on trial for corruption, are claiming legitimacy to overturn the legal and political system,” Sharif tweeted after Khan’s arrest.
In a statement, the European Union urged “restraint and cool headedness” in the country, through dialogue and the rule of law.
In Washington, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly both said at a news conference they were aware of reports about Khan’s arrest but declined any substantive comment. “We just want to make sure that whatever happens in Pakistan is consistent with the rule of law, with the constitution,” Blinken said.
Cleverly said he had not been briefed in detail but added, “The U.K. has a longstanding and close relationship with Pakistan. We are Commonwealth partners. We want to see peaceful democracy in that country. We want ot see the rule of law adhered to. I’m uncomfortable to speculate further without having a detailed briefing on that.”
Khan is the seventh former prime minister to be arrested in Pakistan. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was arrested and hanged in 1979. The current prime minister’s brother, Nawaz Sharif, who also served as prime minister, was arrested several times on corruption al
legations.
In March, police stormed Khan’s Lahore residence, seeking to arrest him based on a court order in a different case. Dozens of people, including police, were injured in ensuing clashes. Khan was not arrested at the time and later obtained bail in the case.
Khan came to power in 2018 after winning parliamentary elections and had initially good relations with the military which gradually soured.
