Back in 2016, I wrote that Sen. Bernie Sanders shouldn’t drop out of the Democratic primary to help Hillary Clinton. That’s because, contrary to conventional wisdom, there’s no consensus on whether a long, divisive primary contest hurts a party in the general election.
In 2019, with more than a dozen candidates still in the running, Democrats are confronting another iteration of this question. The field has narrowed in the last few months, but there are still several potential front-runners, not to mention a bumper crop of second- and third-tier candidates. This means that even though many voters are still undecided, many of them likely won’t see their first-choice candidate — or maybe even their second pick — become the nominee.
What are the implications of this for the party? Well, the reality is we don’t have a lot of examples of presidential primaries with fields this large. But as Hans Noel, an author of “The Party Decides,” wrote in 2016, the parties want a candidate who appeals to all their factions, not just some of them. This was one concern about Donald Trump in 2016. It’s not just that he lacked elite support, but that he might alienate key Republican constituencies like the business community or evangelicals. (Both groups ultimately embraced Trump in 2016.) Nevertheless, when the party elites were unable to select the nominee, the large primary field yielded unpredictable results.
There are already signs that Democratic Party leaders may be slow to decide this year. But does this year’s unwieldy primary actually spell trouble for the Democrats? Or is the crowded field just evidence of natural fissures within the party?
As FiveThirtyEight editor-in-chief Nate Silver wrote earlier this year, the size of the primary field can signal a lack of consensus within the party. In previous cycles, it has meant that both party elites and voters are slower to rally behind a single candidate. But as you’ll note in the table below, a crowded primary field hasn’t led to more losses at the general election level — in fact, there isn’t a real pattern at all.
Big primaries don’t spell general election losses
Number of “noteworthy” candidates in presidential primaries since 1972* and whether the eventual nominee was favored by party elites
Year No. of Major Candidates Party Nominee Won General Election? 2016 17 R Trump ✓ 1976 16 D Carter ✓ 1972 15 D McGovern 2012 12 R Romney 2008 12 R McCain 2000 12 R W. Bush ✓ 1996 12 R Dole 1988 11 D Dukakis 2008 10 D Obama ✓ 2004 10 D Kerry 1980 9 R Reagan ✓ 1992 8 D B. Clinton ✓ 1984 8 D Mondale 1988 7 R H.W. Bush ✓ 2016 5 D H. Clinton 2000 2 D Gore
* Excluding nomination processes for which an incumbent president was running for that party.
There’s no precise definition of what makes a candidate “noteworthy” — editor-in-chief Nate Silver created this list earlier in the year and erred on the side of inclusivity, although a few candidates may slipped through the cracks. The table includes candidates who withdrew before competing in any primaries.
Source: Wikipedia
As to why some primaries are so much more competitive than others, there isn’t a straightforward answer. Some in political science have argued that competitive primaries occur only when the party is already divided, which sounds like a plausible explanation for the 2020 Democratic primary, given the fractures that emerged in the party last cycle. The differences between the progressive and moderate wings of the party have arguably been exacerbated since 2016. Candidates in these two wings have already had some pretty serious disagreements over whether to scrap private health insurance entirely and how to reform the immigration system.
There are other splits in the party, too, that aren’t about policy. These divisions are generational and, at times, deeply personal. For instance, the Democratic Party is continuing to hash out how it will talk about race, as shown by a clash between Sen. Kamala Harris and former Vice President Joe Biden in the first debate over his remarks about working with segregationist senators and his opposition to school integration via busing in the 1970s. Gender also remains a flashpoint in the party, as some feel that gender worked against Clinton in 2016 and now have reservations about nominating a woman.
But these internal party conflicts aren’t necessarily a harbinger of failure. Sometimes a party split over big issues in the primary still wins the general. Take the 1980 Republican primary. There was an insurgent movement among conservatives like Ronald Reagan, who didn’t adhere to party orthodoxy and instead pushed for things like massive tax cuts without cuts to government spending, while more traditional Republicans like George H.W. Bush toed a more moderate, establishment-friendly line. (True, Bush later became Reagan’s running mate, but the 1980 contest still exposed a rift in the party that ultimately reshaped the party’s ideological direction.) Yet despite that intraparty turmoil, Reagan still managed to beat President Jimmy Carter resoundingly.1 A similar thing happened in the 2008 election. Despite a hard-fought competition — and an incredibly close one that had serious implications about gender and race — Obama still managed to win the general election handily.
Intraparty divisions are more visible in some cycles than others (such as this year), but I’d actually argue they’re a constant, not a variable. The idea of party unity tends to be an illusion. For example, Democratic and Republican parties winnowed their respective fields fairly quickly in 2000, giving the impression of unity. But serious policy divisions among Republicans affected George W. Bush’s agenda throughout his presidency. Notable Republicans like the late Sen. John McCain criticized efforts to enact a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage, and Bush’s efforts to reform immigration were deemed them insufficiently tough by members of his party.
Similarly, even though Obama was popular among Democrats and faced no real competition in the 2012 primaries, the fissures among Democrats were clear by the end of his presidency. Critics on the left had long been dissatisfied with the compromises the administration had made on the economic stimulus package and the Affordable Care Act, as well as the environment and immigration. And these complaints — particularly about economic issues — found a voice in the 2016 Sanders campaign.
But ultimately, as history shows us, a big or fragmented Democratic field doesn’t carry real general election risks. A large and unwieldy primary field can produce an unexpected nominee, but it doesn’t mean a party can’t or won’t rally behind a candidate by the time of the general election.
Granted, we can’t be totally sure of the effects of a field this large. But I’d argue that a primary as competitive as the current one can be better for the party than artificial unity (even if 12-candidate debates are a bit exhausting). The primary thus far has helped to clarify what those factions actually are — and what they’re not. It tells voters important things about the state of politics in the party, including divisions over policy solutions and among different demographics. It also illustrates the challenges faced by parties trying to resolve these issues and highlights the fact that democracy, even within parties, is difficult and often full of disagreement. All that said, having 10 or two candidates in the race by the Iowa caucuses should have little bearing on whether Democrats are competitive in 2020.

fogged up glasses
It's so dumb. Really just so dumb. Robbie got new glasses after someone (Carter) broke his glasses (in a battle of glasses vs wolf the wolf always wins) so yes new glasses. He got them online, which honestly was his first mistake.
They're just so dumb, because like as if it wasn't horrible enough already every time he sees Kelly he gets butterflies that spill through the rest of the pack like a wave, now there's physical proof as well. The new glasses fog up. Every single damn time.
Robbie just has to look at Kelly (and his ridiculous dimples and cute smile and hair that's the softest Robbie has ever felt in his life) and boom. Fogged up glasses. A boner would be easier to hide.
The teasing is relentless. Kelly's shy smile every time he notices almost makes it worth it. Almost. Except then Joe makes yet another joke and Robbie rips them off. He'd rather be legally blind than deal with these nerds.
He gets a new pair not even a week later without telling anyone. This one is bought at an actual glasses store and with a layer that supposedly protects against condensation. At least, thats what the lady at the store said. They look pretty much the same as the evil glasses too so no one seems to notice when he gets back to the pack.
At least that's what he thinks.
The lady at the store wasn't lying. He gets through setting the table with Kelly and dinner with the rest of the pack without a hitch.
Carter somehow is the one who notices first the next day. He squints at Robbie and goes "something is different about you" Robbie acts like nothings up, going to the garden to read. There’s this really nice spot he loves where he has a nice view over the house, just under a tree.
When he gets there Kelly is already sitting there, nose in a book.
"Hey!" Kelly greets him with a smile and Robbie nearly melts at that bc the dimples are back and he tries to be smooth and says "Hey yourself! You're sitting in my spot!" and Kelly's smile kind of falters as they make eye contact
He immediately gets up and says "Oh sorry. I'll leave you be" and before Robbie can say anything he walks back to the house And Robbie kind of just stares after him wishing that for once in his life he could actually be smooth but noooo he just had to mess up his chances of sitting next to his crush reading under a tree
Robbie doesn't see him again until they're setting the table again like every evening. It's always kind of a mess who of the pack does or doesn't eat dinner together but they always set enough plates for anyone who wants to.
Kelly is even more touchy than normal. Whenever he moves past Robbie he makes sure to touch him. A hand on his shoulder, on his arm, on his side as they try to navigate the space around the table
And Robbie
well... Robbie is kind of losing it
he tries to hide how whenever Kelly touches him his heart kind of skips a beat. Tries to control his voice as they talk talk talk. He tries so hard not to stumble over his words
Listen,, this boy is confused af. Because while Kelly always talked with him before and smiled and put a somewhat confused effort into their friendship he never actually actively flirted with Robbie. There were signs but it was all such a mess Robbie never was sure if Kelly was interested in him like that
Now tho? Kelly is flirting with him. At the freaking dinner table. It’s still subtle, because it's still Kelly
but all throughout dinner Kelly only has eyes for him. Only talks to him. Only smiles at him.
They're sitting next to each other and Kelly never stops touching him. It's their arms together, their knees, Kelly stretching his feet to touch his. And god Robbie is so gone for this boy
But slowly Kelly gets quieter. There's a small crease forming between his eyebrows and then dinner is over and Kelly is out of the room before anyone else and Robbie is just kind of like ??? Cause Kelly is acting odd
He's not the only one who thinks so apparently, because during his weekly walk with Ox his alpha goes a little quiet before finally asking "are you and Kelly okay?"
Ox has known about Robbie's crush on Kelly since the start and has listened to him antagonise himself over every single tiny development since But Robbie doesn't know what's wrong so he just goes like "I think so. why?" and Ox just shrugs "no reason" and that's that
Except the next day Kelly completely ignores Robbie and yeah maybe they're not okay. Kelly won't even make eye contact with him. And Carter sets the table with him that night. When Robbie asks Carter about it he says Kelly didn't feel great.
Dinner is awkward. Like Robbie low key wants the ground to swallow him whole because apparently he really fucked up. He just doesn't know when or how. Kelly is the exact opposite of the day before. He doesn't look at him. Doesn't talk with him. Doesn't smile at him. And worst of all: doesn't touch him.
And Robbie wants to reach out so bad but he can;t get himself to do it. The others at the table keep sending them both worried glances, but no one comments Not until later when Robbie is helping Elizabeth clear the table and she carefully touches his arm and asks, "are you and Kelly okay?" and now Robbie doesn't know. Because are they?
So he just shrugs and he's just so full of this nervous kind of energy that makes him want to crawl up the walls. So he ends up going on a walk in the forrest. He can't figure out where he went wrong. Yesterday during dinner everything seemed to go so well. Did he not flirt back enough? Didn’t he show Kelly how into him he was? Was he being too awkward?
His walk ends up being a full hour of him antognizing until he's finally back at the house and sits down on the porch. The door opens behind him and Kelly sits down next to him quietly. Still not making eye contact with Robbie he asks "do you not like me anymore?" And Robbie's world kind of skids to a halt because?? WHAT?
Robbie blurts out, "Of course I do! You're incredible. You're smart and strong and beautiful." Kelly's eyes snap up and even in the low light on the porch Robbie can see the blush that's spreading on his face.
Robbie himself is not fairing much better because oh god he really just said that and now Kelly is staring at him and the crease is back and if Kelly doesn't like him back he doesn't know what he'll do. And Kelly lets out this soft oh
and then, "but then why aren't your glasses fogging up anymore? Carter said that- well-" and Robbie just blinks at him and ooooohhhhhhhh now it actually kind of makes sense
"I um got new ones because of that. I didn't want- it was getting so obvious- and the pack- and just- But I definitely like you" because fuck it by now he's said it anyway and it feels kind of good to tell Kelly and Kelly just stares at him (slowly... processing... whats happening) and then blurts out "I like you too" and Robbie's face has never felt this hot before
and its so awkward until it isn't anymore.
Robbie scoots closer and they're touching and everything is on fire and Kelly is looking at him wide eyed and then takes his hand. And Robbie whispers “can I kiss you” and Kelly slowly nods and-
"Please go get a room" Carter unceremoniously plops himself down between them and asks “so did you two finally confess to each other?”
And Robbie just groans and of course then Mark joins them like "stop teasing them Carter this mutual pining thing has been going on for long enough" and the rest of the pack joins too because of course why not its not like they were having a moment or anything.
The whole pack watching expectingly until Kelly rolls his eyes, gets up and basically drags Robbie off into the forrest. They're followed by "make sure you wrap it before you tap it" and kissing noises and a whole lot of hollering that's Really Not Needed
Once they're out of view of the house Kelly slips his hand in Robbie’s. Robbie just lets him take the lead.
There's a comfortable silence between them. Kelly's hand feels warm inside of his and every few steps one of them runs a thumb over the others hand and it sents shivers up Robbie's arm. Kelly is here, here, close, close his to touch and its so much.
When they reach the clearing Kelly gives him a look and Robbie get him and nods and clothes are being thrown in all directions before they turn
And it's nice. Everything is so much simpler
They play around and play tag and try to outrun each other. Robbie inhales Kelly's smell and everything is just so so so green
All Robbie feels is mine mine mine but its okay because its the same thats coming off of Kelly
They end up falling asleep tangled up in a heap, still in their wolf forms. Content and happy and at ease
The next morning Robbie wakes up because something gets thrown at his head. Carter is standing over them. They're still in their wolf form and Kelly is still asleep
"Breakfast in 30 minutes" Carter says with a grin and Robbie just snorts at him before changing back to his human form and making a grab for his clothes. Carter hands him his glasses before he turns around with a “see you at breakfast”.
Robbie carefully wakes Kelly up who blinks at him before letting out a yawn and changing back to his human form. Once they're both up and dressed again Kelly grabs his hand again before they make their way back to the house.
It's a mess. The whole pack is at the breakfast table and they're all looking at them and making comments like "so are you two a thing now?" and "I hope you wrapped it before you did anything" and a million other things that make Robbie feel so uncomfortable
But Kelly while quiet is leaning into his side as they eat. His head on Robbie's shoulder, playing with Robbie's hand and Robbie loves it. Loves the touch, loves the warmth, loves having Kelly so close. Because yeah their pack is always touching, everyone is always there, but this is different
This is butterflies and warmth and a million other things Robbie wasn't sure he'd get. And he knows how that sounds how he's probably going too fast but he also knows that Kelly is perfect and he can see them being together for the rest of their lives. If Kelly wants him like that
After breakfast Gordo tells Robbie not to bother coming to work that day because he;s got a feeling Robbie is going to be even worse than usual and "like seriously kid i dont need you to burn the place down because you're in love"
Kelly went to his room after breakfast so Robbie is now going up the stairs. Kelly's door is wide open and he's sitting on the bed and it looks like he's been waiting. Robbie waits for Kelly to nod before he comes in and sits down next to Kelly on his bed and leans into him. Robbie presses a soft kiss against his shoulder and Kelly hums softly in return.
green green green green
"I'm so glad yesterday happened," Robbie starts. "This is so nice. I've wanted this for ages and you're just so perfect and beautiful and one of the smartest people I know and I can't wait to kiss you and do so, so much more and-" Kelly freezes and fuck did Robbie fuck up again maybe this wasn't a good idea he's such an idiot he should be going slower and what if he's ruined it and
"I don't think I want to have sex" Robbie almost misses and he lets out an oh and damn he really was going too fast and
"I didn't mean right now, just-" he tries to save himself, but Kelly shakes his head and-
"Ever. I don't think I want to have sex ever." And he looks so worried about Robbie's reaction all Robbie wants to do is kiss his frown away. Because oh, oh that's fine as long as Kelly lets him be close he'd take whatever he could give.
"Okay, so you're asexual?" and Kelly stares at him with wide eyes.
"There's a word for that?"
"Yeah."
"Oh." And Kelly mouths the word at himself with a shy smile (and the dimples, the dimples), before turning his attention back on Robbie.
"Are you okay with us never-"
"Yes! Of course. I like you and want to be with you and if you don't want to do sexual stuff there's enough other stuff we can do like this," Robbie pulls Kelly closer so he's in his arms, "and this" he says before kissing Kelly on his forehead, "And..." He leans in carefully and Kelly smiles softly and leans in too and
It's so much and a mess of bumping teeth and lips and giggles and its so good and Robbie will never get enough of this because holy crap Kelly's lips on his are where the world starts and ends
They spend the next week caught up in each other. Robbie helps Kelly research what it means to be asexual and Kelly is so overwhelmed and relieved and happy because yes that’s him and there's a word for that and he's not weird
He presents his wolf to Robbie before the next full moon and Robbie immediately gives him his. They've both never felt this happy before.

Just The Beginning Part 3
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader (Slow Burn)
Featuring: Peggy Carter, Howard Stark, Steve Rogers
Word Count: 1728
Warnings: Porbs cringy writing as this is my first fanfic in over 4 years. Swearing.
A/N: Here is part 3. Sorry it’s been a while, but I’ve been busy with sorting school out, and I was very sick and I’m just bouncing back. If you wish to be tagged please feel free to message me. Also any feedback is much appreciated.
Reader POV
I was so caught up with watching my friends interaction with Steve that I didn’t notice the initial explosion until Howard had knocked me to the ground.
By the time my ears stopped ringing and I looked up Dr. Erskine was on the ground, dead. “What the fuck happened!” Howard shouted, looking around at the damage that had been done.
I slowly start to get up, being mindful that the pressure from the blast might have given me a mild concussion. “Is anybody injured?” I ask beginning to try and help.
A half hour later I had just finished patching up those who were hurt when Peggy and Steve walked back into what was left of the lab. They went strait over to Colonel Philips and began speaking to him. I could see that Steve was getting visibly frustrated so I decided to walk over and see what was going on.
“Ah, Nurse Y/L/N. As you can see, by the disastrous events that just occurred, Project Rebirth is being terminated effective immediately. Thank you for your assistance in patching up people from the blast and your work in helping patient zero over here survive.” Colonel Philips said, while gesturing to Steve.
“Thank you sir. What are my orders?” I ask, stealing a glance at Steve who has calmed down a bit and is now politely smiling at me.
“Well, I’m going to give you a choice. You could either be deployed to the front lines of Europe as originally planned, or you could stay here in the states. Rogers here needs a nurse to be able to monitor him while we run tests to see if we can recreate the serum.” Philips stated.
“Well, if Steve needs…” I began, but was cut off.
“With all due respect Y/N, you don’t need to stay behind. You said earlier you enlisted to help people, so don’t worry about me.” Steve interrupted you with a bitter sweet smile on his face.
“Alright, I guess that means I choose the front lines.” I say with a smile.
“Good, plain leaves 0800 tomorrow. But before you go please give Rodgers here the once over.” Colonel Philips says before dismissing you.
The next 24 hours that followed were a whirlwind. Between re-checking Steve’s vitals and drawing blood to see if the scientists could attempt to recreate the late doctors formula, helping Howard clean up the lab, and packing up for tomorrow, I barely had enough time to catch some shut eye before I found myself on a plain towards Europe.
After a 12 hour flight from New York to London; including a stop off in St. johns to refuel, and a 5 hour train ride I finally arrived at the camp.
“Welcome to what we’ll call home for the foreseeable future.” Colonel Philips stated as we exited the truck that had picked us up from the train station. “Better go rest up girlie. Your day starts at 0700 tomorrow morning.”
I quickly thanked him and headed towards the nurses barracks. To say slept well would be an understatement. I normally don’t sleep at all when I move to a new place, but I was so exhausted from the trans-atlantic journey that the second my head hit the pillow I was out cold.
I was woken up; far to early in my opinion, by the bugle call. I quickly got dressed and head to the mess tent where I grabbed a quick breakfast. I then made my way towards the medical tent.
When I entered the tent the first thing that caught my eye were what appeared to be the 30 or so cots all lined up in two orderly rows. Only about 10 or so cots were occupied, although a sinking feeling in my gut told me it would’t stay that way for long. My eyes trailed along each cot with sympathy, before reaching a makeshift desk that had a young nurse standing behind it talking to another nurse with a clipboard. The first nurse turned towards me, while the other went to go assist one of the occupants of the cots.
“You must be the new girl?” she asked with a kind smile.
“Yes, Nurse Y/L/N, but you can call me Y/N.” I replied shaking her hand.
“Nice to meet you. I’m Dita, and the other nurse over there is Lucy.” Dita said while pointing over to Lucy who waved. “Let me catch you up to speed on how things work around here. Day shift is 0700 until 1900 with an half hour lunch and dinner rotation, and night shift is 1900 until 0700 with an hour sleep rotation. We switch shifts every other week, but since you’re new we’ll start you off with a day shift.” She says kindly.
“Sounds simple enough. Where do I start?” I ask with enthusiasm.
“You can start by giving out the soldiers breakfasts based on their respective charts. Once thats done, you and Lucy can start redressing any wounds with fresh bandages.” she said while pointing to a tray of food and a stack of patient clipboards. “Each cot is numbered with its matching clipboard so it shouldn’t take to long. Mornings are usually quiet. It’s the afternoons when the troops get back from there rounds and objectives that things start to get really busy. If you need any help feel free to ask.” Dita said, then sat down and started filling out some paper work.
I spent the morning handing the soldiers their meals. Lucy had introduced me to the 8 soldiers that were currently staying in the med ward. When it came time to redress there injuries we each decided to treat 4 of them.
My first patient, Adam, had a head wound that looked worse then it actually was. He said he had been pushed out of the way of oncoming fire and hit his head on a rock. He said that the doctor wanted to watch him overnight and had given him antibiotics to ward off infection.
My second patient barley spoke while I redressed his wound. From his patient chart it said his name was Edmond from Morristown, New Jersey. He, according to Adam was the soldier who had saved him from the enemy fire. He had suffered from a bullet wound to his right side. Luckily it looked liked the bullet had passed trough, and missed all vital organs.
Jack, my third patient, didn’t need a wound to be redressed because he had apparently been admitted with Tuberculosis. The poor soldier couldn’t have been any older then 22, but sadly he had already begun to cough up blood, according to his patient chart. I gave him his dose of antibiotics and an extra piece of bread to help keep the nausea at bay. My forth patient for the morning, David, only had a concussion, so he had stayed asleep after breakfast.
It wasn’t until around 1500 hours that things started to pick up. Soldier after soldier came in, some with easily treatable things like sprained wrist and dehydration, others with bullet wounds that had just barley missed their lungs. It wasn’t until 1630 hours, when I was just finishing wrapping a through-and-through that Dita called me to the front of the tent.
“Y/N can you fill out this patients paper work for me while I help him to a cot?” she asked while she put the patients arm around her shoulders and began to walk him towards a cot with one of his fellow soldiers.
“Sure, no problem.” I say as I quickly walk over to the desk and start a new patient form. I look up towards the other soldier that had brought in the new patient when I was met with a pair of the bluest eyes I had ever seen. Standing before me was an incredibly hansom soldier. He stood around 6 foot tall with a blinding white smile, strong jaw line, and broad shoulders. His hair was slightly out of place, most likely due to helping his fellow soldier, but he still looked as if he had just gotten ready for the day. I had to prevent myself from letting out a gasp as my eyes quickly shifted down to focus on the form, trying to suppress the blush that was rising to my cheeks.
“Name?” I ask, keeping my eyes trained to the form.
“The names Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes, but you can call me Bucky. What’s yours Doll?” he says with a confident tone to his voice.
I quickly collect myself and laugh a bit at his response. “I meant your friends name, who is currently being helped to a cot.” I state with my eyebrow arched, daring him to defy me.
“Fair enough, his name is Mike Brown.” Bucky said chuckling at your attempt to intimidate him.
“Date of birth?”
“Don’t know.”
“Place of birth?”
“Queens, New York I think.”
“And how exactly did he end up hurting his leg, Sergeant Barnes.” I ask while writing the other information down.
“Well Mikey here is a bit of a klutz. He might have tripped when he was trying to get out of the transport truck, and landed on his foot in a wrong way. I heard a crack when he hit the ground and I think it’s broken.” Bucky stated, eyeing you up and down.
“Barnes! You better not be lying to my nurse!” Mike shouted from across the tent, causing you to giggle.
“Of course not Mikey!” Bucky called back. “He hurt his leg fighting off 100 nazis single handedly.” Bucky said loud enough for Mikey to hear winking at me.
“Damn straight!” Mikey called back causing me to smile and shake my head at the soldiers antics.
“Thank you Sergeant for your help. You are free to go.” I say as you put the finishing touches on the form, struggling to not to glance at his eyes.
“Please, call me Bucky. Plus you still haven’t told me your name Doll.” Bucky said with a cocky smile.
“I know.” I say with a flirty smile and turn away from him. “Have a nice evening Sergeant Barnes.” I toss over my shoulder as I walk towards Mikey’s cot to get the remaining info for the paper work and help Dita bind his leg.
