2023 Reads: thelonelybrilliance
Final count 72! I set a goal of 52 originally but raised the bar when I realized that would only bring me into early November.
Decided it would be fun to share some stats and recommendations along with the full list.
First, ten recommendations:
The Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner (best completed series)
Gregory Orr, The Last Love Poem I Will Ever Write (best new poetry read)
Minka Kelly, Tell Me Everything (best memoir)
E.B. White, Here Is New York (best short read)
Carrie Fisher, The Princess Diarist (best journals)
Sydney Taylor, All-of-a-Kind Family (best children's lit)
Laurie Halse Anderson, Shout (best poetry memoir)
George Eliot, Middlemarch (best classic)
Michelle Zauner, Crying in H Mart (best food writing)
Red Rising series by Pierce Brown (best sci-fi/ongoing series + best audio drama (Red Rising (Book 1))
Of my 72 reads, 31 were rereads, 41 new . Four were audiobooks, the rest print (primarily e-books). My longest read was David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. My shortest read (I think? A lot of poetry collections are short) was the longform essay, Here Is New York by E.B. White. I read the most books in December (15) and the least in June (2). 50 authors were women, 21 were men, and one poetry collection was multi-author. My most-read authors were as follows:
Megan Whalen Turner (7 books)
Lucy Maud Montgomery (6 books)
Louise Glck (5 books)
Elizabeth Wein (5 books)
Jane Austen (3 books)

Writing Reflection: 2018
I was tagged by @horsegirlharry, who i will smooch in person in ONE WEEK!
1. Number of stories (including drabbles) posted to AO3: 15. I'm trying not to feel critical about my output this year: I was distracted by ~boy problems and emotional turmoil for a lot of 2018, so I absolutely slayed some journals but neglected my fic. but I also tackled some difficult projects, some of which I'm really proud of, and translated a lot of those big emotions back into writing, so there's a lot to give myself credit for.
2. Word count posted for the year: 224,001
3. List of works published this year (in order of posting)
Roman Candle Hearts
I'm A Wing, I'm A Prayer
The Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique
your hips, your lips, are mine
in space, no one can hear you misgender me
Girl Firsts
halfway to your heart (starting from your knees)
Boys Next Door/Assholes
Vices & Vices
Early Morning Company
Jaws of Death
Baby You're A Haunted House
The Fixed Stars of Heaven
Sell Out Girl
Think of All The Fellas I Haven't Kissed
4. Fandoms I wrote for: Fall Out Boy, Battlestar Galactica, Panic! at the Disco, My Chemical Romance
5. Pairings: Pete/Patrick, Starbuck/Apollo, Pete/Brendon, Brendon/Ryan, Patrick/Michael Day, Frank Iero/Gerard Way, Joe/Andy
6. Story with the most:
Boys Next Door/Assholes, aka the peterick SUMMER BOYFRIENDS au, aka the fic I wrote about falling in love with my ex that captures the sweetness and suffering of new summer love in a very specific and tactile way. It has the most hits, kudos, and comments of anything I wrote in 2018. I'm so glad you guys loved it so much!
9. Work I’m most proud of (and why):
Sell Out Girl, the sequel to girl out boy, is incredibly important to me and I'm so fucking proud of how it turned out. emotionally, i am prouder of the girl out boy stories than anything else i've ever done. girlfic is how I am cleaning my wounds and healing my heart, and it is an honor to be doing that with you walking alongside me, and being touched and changed too. this fic was incredibly emotionally demanding but also, on a technical level, easy: there was lots of rambly internal monologues and angst, glitter-sharp language and poetical pain, which is my comfort zone as a writer for sure.
on a technical and writerly level, the one I'm most proud of is Baby You're A Haunted House, because i wrote it *fast*, in a fandom I'm not comfortable or familiar in, in a style I don't usually use, and to achieve a very specific artistic effect with the unreliable narrator and shifting sands of reality, while heartbroken. so I'm pleased as fuck with how it came out. it's one of my favorite things I've written in the past several years, and the perfect kind of challenge for me.
10. Work I’m least proud of (and why):
ugh, The Fixed Stars of Heaven . I usually love everything I write, but my experience of writing this fic was terrible. I was never inspired (except when researching the ISS and zero-g botany!) and the epistolary format meant I didn’t know how to develop the kind of tension I *live* for. the whole time I was writing, I didn’t go back and reread (a typical part of my process for matching tone) because I loathed it so much! I kept saying “well, something has to be my worst story” about it... and I still feel that way.
11. A favorite excerpt of your writing:
It's impossible to choose--I like my writing a lot, that's why I write the way i do. all of Baby You're A Haunted House and I'm A Wing, I'm A Prayer are beautiful to me; the love letter Pete writes in Boys Next Door/Assholes; and the whole bathtub scene from chapter 5 of Sell Out Girl, of which this is the very best part:
“Pete is safe and warm and submerged, an egg in a mermaid’s purse, waiting to swim out as a shark whenever she’s ready. She holds her breath and feels her baby beat within her. She looks up at Pat and fears nothing, nothing but love.”
12. Share or describe a favorite review you received:
every review I get makes impact on my heart. I take screenshots and save my favorites; you guys bolster me and keep me going. The best and most important reactions are the ones I get on Girl Out Boy stuff, and the outpouring of fanworks and support means the world to me. especially the way you guys showed up for and stood with me during my difficult breakup this year—wow. I love you so much.
my favorite reviews I’ve gotten this year have been a few different people who told me I was skilled at capturing the feeling of falling in love. as a feelings-and-process oriented romance writer, that means the world to me! I never know what plots my stories are going to have (my characters always surprise me), but I always know how I want a fic to feel. I’m never more honored than when you feel it too.
13. A time when writing was really, really hard:
during the slow-motion process of one of my romantic relationships coming apart in September and October! I was so anxious and keyed up and self-obsessed and miserable during that time, I literally couldn’t bear to write, and when I tried I just kept wrecking the Girl Out Boys’ lives. you guys carried me through.
14. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you:
I don’t want to spoil Sell Out Girl, but a ship I don’t typically ship popped up and I went with it, and I was exactly as surprised as everyone reading that it happened and that it felt so right and good!
15. How did you grow as a writer this year:
i tried new types of projects, like the fucking epistolary scifi fic, a flash fiction exercise, the unreliable narrator trope, and sequels. i wrote in a couple fandoms I'm less comfortable in, fairly often off of other people's prompts. I am trying to hone a cleaner writing style: I spend so much time lost and rambly in describing how characters feel, my stories lose a lot of chances for action and motion. i like my writing best when it is spare and vivid, able to actually evoke emotions rather than just tell you what they feel like. i think some of my fic this year really showcases that (like Vices & Vices ). i still grow so much as a writer, and learn so much about the craft, with each work.
i used an editing and revision process for Fixed Stars of Heaven, thanks to my dear friend JM, that i don't usually subject my work to. i also wrote through a project i was not enjoying, rather than dropping it as soon as my interest waned. my discipline as a wild, reckless writer is, slowly but surely, improving.
i wrote through my own shitty emotionally abusive relationship with a parent through the character of Andy in sell out girl, and got better at naming trauma and abuse and setting my own boundaries as a result of that.
i started reading (and a little bit writing) poetry again.
16. How do you hope to grow next year:
oh, i can't see that road! i hope i grow in ways i never expected cuz i'm faced with challenges in my work i could never have anticipated. generically, i hope i keep tightening my style and improving my discipline, and getting better at defending regular writing time.
17. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc):
- i read only works by women for the entire year of 2018, and the nourishing impact of that on my entire inner life cannot be overstated. i didn't even read a comic book or a work book if it was written by a man. i kept myself entirely pure of the labor of perspective-taking for men, or subjecting myself to men's conception of anybody else's experiential reality.
- @leyley09 my official Fic Enabler, who is SINGULARLY AND SOLEY to blame for at least two fics this year, and has encouraged my very worst ideas about a hundred more
- my unofficial cheerleading squad family on tumblr, who lifted me up and made sure i was healthy, supported, and well through my whole shitty relationship ending debacle. @glitterandrocketfuel, @secretstudentdragonblog, @allkindsofplatinumandpercocet, and @laudanumcafe -- not to mention every other beauty who commented on my sad-ass selfies or my fic. thank you, my loves.
18. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year:
EVERYTHING IS REAL
most notable and egregious examples:
- the letter pete writes for patrick in boys next door/assholes is a real love letter i gave someone
- the fight brendon and ryan have in vices & vices is a real fight i had with a partner
- the climactic kiss on the streets of new york at the end of sell out girl is my real first kiss with my new boo
the worst thing is that i don't generally farm my *past* life for my fic--everything that shows up is really recent and fresh, because i'm most interested in writing things i'm currently dealing with and experiencing. and yes, i especially steal the sex scenes.
19. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers:
be curious about yourself and your characters. if you've never written / published in a serial format, where you're only writing a week or so ahead of posting, you must try it at least once! listen to what your readers are noticing about your themes and characters! i learn so much about my the emotional resonance and direction of my stories from the people who read them and comment. my writing is so much stronger as a result of writing the majority of my work this way, and i have much more fun with it than when i write a long piece in an echo chamber with no input from you guys!
20. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year:
- i'm working on a Rent-A-Family trope + law firm AU + kidfic thing i started messing with last year
- Pete Wentz's Bisexual Realizations, a fic dreamed up and playlist-empowered by @nikadd
- a Venom AU for my beloved @immoral-crow
- Girl Out Boy hiatus fic
- and a MANIA anniversary surprise <3
21. Tag some writers whose answers you’d like to read.
all of my Peterick creator pals! @leyley09 @shatteredmirrors-and-lace23 @allkindsofplatinumandpercocet @laudanumcafe @glitterandrocketfuel and everyone/anyone else!

Thanks to the lovely @whostheblondegirlwriting for taking the time to answer these! Get to know more about lovely E, go give her a follow and then show her some love!
These questions are from this list. You should check it out, there’s 50 questions all together and they’d be great to ask your favorite fic writer!
*Disclaimer from E, herself: If you’re looking for some sage-like writery advice...keep lookin’. You won’t find it here. This whole fic writing endeavor is an adventure in “[shrugs] We’ll see what happens”. Behold! An odyssey of half-assed, one line inspo. Marvel at the absolute appalling lack of plotting and vision. Tremble at the underwhelming realization that “Huh. I could do better than that”. In short, at least you don’t pay money for this, right?
1) How old were you when you first starting writing fan-fiction?
I have no idea, honestly. I signed up for AO3 to actually share it though in September 2015 when I was 36. So we’ll go with that.
2) Do you prefer writing OC’s or reader inserts? Explain your answer.
I think I have done more reader inserts than OC, counting all the tumblr oneshots. But you can actually create something substantial with an OC. An OC makes you work. I prefer them.
3) What is your favorite genre to write for?
I don’t know if I’ve done enough variety to have a fav, honestly.
4) If you had to delete one of your stories and never speak of it again, which would it be and why?
I wouldn’t. They’re all mine and I’m proud of each of them, no matter how popular (or maybe I should say, unpopular) they are/were.
5) When is your preferred time to write?
Whenever I have the time! I’m not picky, because time is very hard to come by with my job anymore and the fact that my husband doesn’t know I write. Morning, noon, or night for me. It can be hard to sneak it in and still get everything else done.
6) Where do you take your inspiration from?
I don’t have a good answer for this and I’m laughing to myself thinking I should have one. Lol An idea comes up and I write it. That’s it. Shameful, I know.
7) In your Back to One series, what’s your favorite scene that you wrote?
Oh, damn. Uhhh...I think I liked Sebastian fumbling through his confession to Lily in Montauk. But I also probably had the most fun with the “champagne incident” because it was for my tumblr-lifemate, @ceebeetumbles.
8) Have you ever amended a story due to criticisms you’ve received after posting it?
Nope. It is what it is. You can’t please everyone and I don’t try. As long as I like it, it’s good enough. It’s not like anyone’s paying me for this, anyway. Lol
9) Who is your favorite character to write for? Why?
Hmm. Right now, I’d have to say Jack Rollins, because he preoccupies so much of my writing lately. Besides his own fic, he’s also featuring in an AU for Echo that’s in draft. Considering he had two lines in Winter Soldier, I’m very proud of the interest and love my Jack gets.
10) Who is your least favorite character to write for? Why?
Chris Evans, for right now. Only because he has been less than inspirational for some time due to his relative inactivity and, uh, [ahem] some personal choices he made. But I’m optimistic he’ll come back.
11) How did you come up with the title for the Back to One series?
The main character, Lily, goes through some personal and professional ups and downs as an actress. The phrase “back to one” is a direction for actors to go back to their first mark, so I thought it was fitting, as Lily would hopefully get things right, find her best self again, and have a fresh start as she meets different situations and opportunities in her story.
12) How did you come up with the idea for the Back to One series?
I thought I’d write a Sebastian Stan fic and figured a good match for him (and someone to help drive the story) would be an actress. But then I considered an OC like Lily could have more angles to write and it became really an OC fic that features Sebastian Stan. Oops.
13) Do you have any abandoned WIP’s? What made you abandon them?
I haven’t ever abandoned a fic. I refuse to give up on A Touch Up and do write a line or two here and there, just nowhere near the volume I need to publish a full chapter like I used to. It ended up on the shelf because Chris Evans got so boring after Civil War premiered and the fic is literally built on what he was doing in his everyday life. I also have a personal distaste for Jenny Slate and I guess you could say his decision to date her made me doubt the version of him I’d created in ATU, which is a problem when your fic is paired so purposefully around the assumptions I/we all had made by that time about him.
14) Are there any stories that you’ve written that you’d really love to do a sequel to?
I’m doing it. Echo was my pet project and, though it has my smallest following for a WIP, I had enough demand/interest for the story to be told from another character’s perspective that Jack Rollins and the STRIKE Series were born. There’ll be some unexpected things along the way in that series that I hope those fans/readers enjoy.
15) Are there any stories that you wished you’d ended differently?
No. I’ve only ended a couple fics (Echo and Kindness). Everything else is still a WIP or open ended series that publishes oneshots every once in awhile. The rest of my work is basically oneshots.
16) Tell me about another writer(s) who you admire? What is it about them that you admire?
Don’t laugh at me when I say I admire anyone who puts their work out there, even if it’s just a paragraph long imagine only on tumblr. It takes a lot of nerve, no matter what level your work is at or how big the scope. I’ve seen some good, bad, and ugly fic floating around, but I see value in it all and love seeing experience/determination help the writer evolve.
We ain’t all Hemingways or Shakespeares. And that’s okay. Some of the best writers don’t have thousands of followers and get hundreds of notes (but deserve them). And some of the behemoths out there aren’t necessarily turning out mind blowing fic, either. It’s a crapshoot and fandom can be fickle (if not downright confusing af).
17) Do you have a story that you look back on and cringe when you reread it?
Not at all. If it posts, I’m happy with it.
18) Do you prefer listening to music when you’re writing or do you need silence?
Either is fine. I probably write more in quiet, though, because my husband works 3rd shift, so I’m mindful not to disturb him.
19) Have you ever cried whilst writing a story?
No. Closest I could say to giving me my own feels was when I wrote The Death of Brock Rumlow (when it existed as part of the original Echo plot).
20) Which part of your Back to One series was the hardest to write?
I’m happy to say I don’t think there’s been a hard part to write for Back To One, or any of my fics. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it!
21) Do you make a general outline for your stories or do you just go with the flow?
Nope. No outlines or plans. I pretty much just sit down and write. If inspiration doesn’t hit, I’ll switch to a different WIP. If I have an idea for a line or scene I might make a note for later (maybe just a few words to point me in the right direction/remind me, or a line or two of dialogue), but once I get to it, I usually just write it out at once.
22) What is something you wished you’d known before you started posting fan-fiction?
How little time I’d have down the road for it. Maybe I wouldn’t have run such long WIPs/fics at a time. It feels like it’s been 100 years since I had time to open requests and I had to abandon a weekly posting schedule for 3 WIPs earlier this year because I just don’t have the time to manage the volume I used to anymore.
23) Do you have a story that you feel doesn’t get as much love as you’d like?
OMG yes! Echo and its companion fic, Jack Rollins (and I’ll probably say the same for the au/the STRIKE series). At this point, I can confidently say the following for Echo didn’t carry over to Jack Rollins, but I knew both were niche fics in the beginning anyway. I’m grateful for the attention Echo got, but it was such a labor of love, I’d have liked to see it do better. I may only have several regular readers for Jack Rollins commenting or reblogging, but those few readers and myself are the ones I wrote it for, and that I’ll keep posting it for until it’s finished, regardless of how tiny the readership because I love it.
24) In contrast to 23 is there a story which gets lots of love which you kinda eye roll at?
Not in an “oh, geez. Not that again” way. More like a “oh, stop. I can’t believe you guys like it that much” kind of humbled eye roll.
25) Are any of your characters based on real people?
Obviously the celebrities like Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan, technically yeah. I have no doubt that some of my own ticks, experiences, etc have made it into a character or plot, or things from people I know or have come across. Things you don’t necessarily draw lines between on purpose but maybe catch on to later, sure.
26) What’s the biggest compliment you’ve gotten?
Any of the comments or messages from people who say they cried, laughed out loud in public, got way too giddy, or held their breath because of something I wrote. They make me so happy, just to see someone got so lost or involved in a moment means I did a good job. Having someone say they reread a fic (or are reading for the X time) is a hell of a compliment, too.
27) What’s the harshest criticism you’ve gotten?
It was about A touch Up and how I had given the reader insert character, or implied, too much description (ex. noting that POC don’t blush as often as this girl did, when I wrote it as that feeling in the cheeks anyone can experience to convey her nervousness/embarrassment/etc at those points in the story so people maybe shared that sense as they read, not that she frequently ran around with a noticeable flush) and that, although I may not have said it outright, things like that apparently had made her so that she was obviously white. That ruined it for the commenter, despite there not actually being that much said about appearance in the story.
28) Do you share your story ideas with anyone else or do you keep them close to your chest?
Rarely. @ceebeetumbles gets a snippet of a chapter thrown at her once in a very blue moon, if I want to be sure something isn’t too cliché or generally awful. Lol But there’s a chance she’s reading along with the fic, so I may not send the whole chapter. I don’t plot per se or collaborate with anyone though.
29) Do people know you write fan-fiction?
Just the lovely people who’ve visited me on Tumblr or AO3.
30) What’s you favorite minor character you’ve written?
It’s a toss up between Frank Grillo’s appearance in A Touch Up and Jack Rollins or Eric Mickelson in Echo. I’m also a little fond of Drew Madison in Back To One.
31) What spurs you on during the writing process?
That I told you I’d post an update to a WIP, promised a drabble, or set a deadline that a request would be done by. So, really just my self-imposed “schedule”.
32) What’s your favorite trope to write?
I don’t really have one.
33) Can you remember the first fic you read? What was it about?
Nnnope. Lol
34) If you could write only angst, fluff or smut for the rest of your writing life, which would it be and why?
It’s a toss up between angst and fluff. They both come pretty easily. Honestly, smut is exhausting to write and I do so little of it because I don’t want it to be repetitive. Fluff is always fun. But, man...the possibilities with angst are pretty limitless, so maybe I’d lean a little more that way.

Goodbye, Baby…
After seven years, 29,930 posts, numerous friendships made, and some broken, and countless memories that will last me a lifetime, I have decided to leave Tumblr.
I began to think about it around this time last year, but I only decided that I was going to leave Tumblr in autumn. In my “Year in Review” last year, I said that I had “plans” for my Tumblr this year, and these are the “plans.” There were also three factors in the latter months of last year that solidified my decision to leave.
Firstly, I do not enjoy Tumblr as I once did, and what is the point of continuing to do something that you do not enjoy? The numerous updates to Tumblr were also a factor that contributed to my decision to leave as they would often interfere with the format of my posts, which led to Tumblr becoming more of a chore than anything else.
Secondly, I feel that it is the right time to leave Tumblr. I turned eighteen years old on 21 September 2016, and the seventh anniversary of the creation of this blog was in January of this year. I created my Tumblr when I was eleven going on twelve, and I am now eighteen going on nineteen. I lived through the most formative years of my life (so far…) on Tumblr, and, as corny as I am aware that it sounds, the adolescent chapter of my life is drawing to a close, and I believe that it would be fitting to leave Tumblr in that chapter. I am also going to graduate from high school next month, which contributes to the overall feeling of a chapter of my life ending, and a new one beginning.
And thirdly, the death of Carrie Fisher on 27 December 2016 had a number of impacts on me. I cannot describe adequately in words how her death solidified my decision to leave Tumblr, but, perhaps, her death made me want to focus more on my life (I sound like my therapist…).
Speaking of my therapist, she was the first person that I told about my decision to leave Tumblr, and she has been supportive of it. I have sessions with her on a weekly basis, and I believe that she has helped me progress to a degree with my mental illnesses. I am currently being weaned off of my previous medications with the exception of Klonopin due to their ineffectiveness, and I will begin a new medication to replace them in mid–June. I will return to visiting my psychiatrist on a monthly basis in June (I canceled the appointments with him in February and March due to lack of means to get to his office, so I had not seen him since January when I had my most recent appointment with him in April). It has been difficult weaning off of my medications, but I believe that it is the right thing to do because the medications are ineffective (or, rather, not as effective as they should be). As I said in my “Year in Review” last year, I continue to hope for the progression of my mental illnesses, and I likewise hope that the new medication(s) that I will begin will aid in leading me there.
In my “Year in Review” for last year, I stated my intention to read all of Carrie Fisher’s books, and I reread “Postcards from the Edge” from its beginning in early January of this year (I began reading the book in spring 2014, but I did not finish it), and I watched the film adaptation starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine after I finished the book. The book and the film differed in certain areas, but I enjoyed both of them immensely. I received “Surrender the Pink,” “Delusions of Grandma,” and “The Best Awful” in late February (I received “The Princess Diarist” for Christmas, and I have owned “Wishful Drinking” and “Shockaholic” since 2011). I intend to read them during the summer. In addition to reading Carrie Fisher’s books during the summer, I intend to read (or, rather, finish, as I have already started reading it) “Go Ask Alice.” I watched several films in the past five months, including a “teen movie” spree a couple of weeks ago, during which I watched “Sixteen Candles,” “The Breakfast Club” (or, rather, re–watched the latter two), “Pretty in Pink,” “Heathers,” “Clueless,” “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” (or, rather, re–watched the latter), and “Jawbreaker.” I enjoyed all of them. As an aside to the topic at hand, I watched the anime series “Samurai Champloo” in January (I had wanted to watch it in September 2016, but I became too focused on other matters). I likewise enjoyed it immensely. After I have left Tumblr, I intend to return to “Sailor Moon: Crystal” in the summer.
In my “Year in Review” for last year, I stated that I intended to pen a letter to Carrie Fisher, and her mother, Debbie Reynolds, “for my own closure, if not for anything else,” and I finished the letter a few weeks ago. I began writing the letter on Ash Wednesday, 5 March 2017, but I stopped writing it for a reason that I cannot recall, and I began to rewrite the letter from the beginning — after I noticed the pages of the letter were bent — on Palm Sunday, 9 April 2017, and I finished the letter on 1 May 2017. I would like to say that I reached closure regarding her death through the completion of the letter, but my heart remains broken, and I anticipate that it will remain so for a while. I shared the letter with my brother, my therapist (who made several good points based on things I wrote in it), and I intend to share it with @lanaturners (Karen).
In late February 2017, my mother bought tickets for my brother and me for Stevie Nicks’ show in Baltimore, Maryland for the second leg of her 24 Karat Gold Tour. On 26 March 2017, I traveled to Baltimore, Maryland for the first time — dressed in my “Stevie attire,” my scarf, my shawl, my platform boots, and my jewelry — to attend the concert. I was disappointed to hear that The Pretenders would not be performing (I had looked forward to hearing “Hymn to Her,” as well as the rest of their opening act due to the fact that I had arrived in the midst of their performance during the concert on 14 November 2016), but I remained excited for the show. On 14 November 2016 — the day that I saw Stevie Nicks in concert in Washington, D.C. for the first leg of her 24 Karat Gold Tour — I wrote her a letter, which I intended to ask Mary Torrey to deliver to her if she would, based on advice I received from @crystallineknowledge (Danielle), However, I was unable to give my letter to Mary Torrey in Washington, D.C. due to several factors. @lanaturners (Karen), @crystallineknowledge (Danielle), and my therapist all encouraged me to ask Mary Torrey at this concert if she would deliver the letter to Stevie, and so I walked to the front after she came out from backstage, and I asked the security guard if I could ask Mary Torrey a question. A fellow security guard joined him, and the two informed her that I wanted to ask her a question (it occurred to me after I had sat down that I should have thanked the security guards, but the moment had passed, and I did not want to make the situation any more awkward), and I politely asked if she would not mind delivering my letter to Stevie, and she said that she did not mind “at all,” and I thanked her profusely, and I said that I was “eternally grateful” for her help in delivering my letter to Stevie, so that Stevie will know how much she and her music mean to me. Mary Torrey was kind and sweet, friendly and gracious, and I am eternally grateful to her. As I said to her, “Stevie and her music have saved my life.” After my success in delivering my letter to Mary Torrey, the night was destined to be amazing. The seats my brother and I had were in the fourth row (the tickets my mother, my brother, and I had for the concert on 14 November 2016 were in the twenty–third row). When Stevie came onstage, I was overcome with joy. I loved all of the songs in her set, but I particularly enjoyed hearing “Gypsy” (the second in my top three favorite songs of hers as a member of Fleetwood Mac), “Stand Back” — I wished again that I had enough space to twirl along with her! — “Gold Dust Woman” (as I said to my therapist, my experience during “Gold Dust Woman” was the most fun I had the entire night), “Edge of Seventeen,” “Rhiannon,” and “Landslide” (my favorite song of hers both as a member of Fleetwood Mac and as a solo artist). In addition to the successful delivery of my letter to Mary Torrey, the most exciting aspect of the experience — as it was at the concert on 14 November 2016 — was to be in the arena with Stevie Nicks, listening to her perform live and hearing her stories and advice between her songs. In addition to being a dream come true for a second time, it was an amazing experience that I will never forget. I intend to give an in–depth review of the concert to @lanaturners (Karen) and @crystallineknowledge (Danielle) soon.
As for my plans for the rest of the year after I have left Tumblr, I would like to attend the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in the Extraordinary Form for the third time next month.
I intend to audition in July for the role of Mary Warren for my local community theater’s production of “The Crucible,” which will be performed in October. I do not know whether or not I will get the role due to my gender, as well as the fact that I am uncertain of my abilities as an actor, but @lanaturners (Karen) and my therapist have both encouraged me to do it, so I think that I will do it.
The most significant thing that I intend to do with the rest of my year is to continue writing my novel. After the death of Carrie Fisher on 27 December 2016, I was solidified in my decision to write a novel — which was an idea that I had been thinking about for a few months — that is based on my life, particularly my experiences with my mental illnesses, and that I would dedicate it to her. It is entitled “Out of the Depths” (Psalm 129:1), and the main character is Sara Reinhart, who is essentially me, but as a twenty–nine–(going–on–thirty)–year–old woman. I have written a few pages of the first chapter thus far, but I have also written a few pages that I intend to place in my second chapter, as well as the ending of my fourth chapter (I intend to have five chapters in my novel, as well as a prologue and an epilogue, based on “Postcards from the Edge”). My family has supported me (the Reinhart family is based on my own, and most of Sara’s experiences with her parents and siblings are based on experiences of mine with my parents and siblings), as has my therapist. I want to attempt to finish the novel by the end of the year.
When I spoke with my therapist about leaving Tumblr, I told her that I wanted to write a “pithy,” meaningful “farewell” text post for the friends that I am leaving on here, and the followers that read my posts (the lone follower of mine that read my posts will hopefully appreciate what I have to say). I want to say to the twelve year old boys, and girls, and boys that are mistaken for girls (I speak from experience…) that join Tumblr (as well as the ones that are already on Tumblr) to be kind to one another. Do not remain in friendships with people that do not respect you. I understand that it may be heartbreaking to end a friendship with someone with whom you are close, but it is not worth the anger, the resentment, and the hurt feelings to remain in a toxic friendship (again, I speak from experience…). Although I did not have the brick–and–mortar middle and high school experiences due to the fact that I attended cyber school from the fifth grade onwards, I did experience the fights, the popularity contests, the cliques, and the drama of Tumblr (which I admit that I participated in), and I want to say to those aforementioned twelve year olds to try to rise above it, and to be good people to one another. I realize that I sound more pretentious than anything else saying these things because I am only eighteen years old, and I have more learning to do for myself, but I am speaking from my experiences on Tumblr, and if my advice based on my experiences can help one person (I doubt such a person exists, but just in case…), then it is worthwhile. In conclusion, be good people to one another. Be loving. Be understanding. Be compassionate. Be kind. Watch movies (specifically, classic movies). Listen to music (specifically, Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, and Stevie Nicks). Read (specifically, Carrie Fisher). I am biased perhaps on the latter five recommendations, but I recommend them regardless. During her concert in Baltimore, Maryland on 26 March 2017, Stevie Nicks said (I am paraphrasing as I cannot recall her words exactly, and there is no video of the speech as far as I know), “Don’t let anyone tell you that you aren’t cute enough, beautiful enough, talented enough, good enough.” I interpreted “anyone” as including one’s self, and, as someone with low self–esteem who does not believe that they are “good enough,” her words were words that I needed to hear, and that I need to remember, and I wanted to share them with others who are like myself. And to those of you — twelve years old, and otherwise — who are mentally ill — specifically, OCD, GAD, MDD, &c. — I know that our journey is difficult, but we must continue onwards. We must not let our mental illnesses win. We must rise above them as we must rise above the hatred, the ignorance, and the meanness, and be good to ourselves and to one another.
As I have expressed many times over the years (I usually expressed this to myself, but I did say it to others a few times), I do not intend to delete my Tumblr after I leave, but I will simply leave my Tumblr inactive.
Thank you all for the memories, the fun, the love, the support, and the friendship that you all have shown me for the past seven years.
And now I’m off to see what’s over the rainbow…

Books I read in 2016
This a list of books that I read this year -- or, more accurately, finished. I have at least four other books began in 2016 that are in some stage of reading. Maybe more. I've included a few brief thoughts on each...
1. Fish in the Dark by Larry David (January 2): I vaguely recall this. It had its funny moments. I wish I'd gotten a chance to see David in this.
2. The Power of the Dog by Don Winslow (January 9): Goddamn... this picks up pretty much where Ellroy's stuff stops and shifts gears just enough. Not as much mixing of historical figures, but it's the same broad strokes -- the same nasty sort of people. Really fucking good.
3. Stories I Tell Myself: Growing Up with Hunter S. Thompson by Juan F. Thompson (January 29): I got this for my birthday and read it that day. Funny book... a little surprising in parts... and ends with some bits of barely disguised bits about his issues with Anita. The Hunter/Juan stuff is something that had never really been explored too much anywhere and to have a whole book detailing one side of that relationship was cool.
4. The Man Who Sold the World: David Bowie and the 1970s by Peter Doggett (February 13): A bit of a chore after a time. It goes through every song Bowie recorded in the '70s and that sort of approach can grow tedious. But, there's a reason why I read it when I did and that's fine enough.
5. Baseball Prospectus 2016 ed. Patrick Dubuque, Sam Miller, and Jason Wojciechowski (February 18): A new yearly tradition. 2017's edition is already pre-ordered. My strongest memory of this one is sitting in this tiny Starbucks connected to the Indigo in Tecumseh while Michelle was at the gym (and Ryan at the daycare there). As it was around Valentine's Day, I had some raspberry chocolate coffee thing. I also got a croissant. It was overpriced and undergood. I do love reading the team essays. A nice primer on the upcoming season.
6. The Cartel by Don Winslow (March 6): The Power of the God was sprawling, while this was more contained. But, it covered more ground in its own way. It was heartbreaking in a larger way. This book hammers you. I don't know what a third one will bring, but I'm there.
7. Gone with the Mind by Mark Leyner (March 15): I liked The Sugar Frosted Nutsack, but that felt like a warm-up book. A bit tedious; a bit too involved with itself. This was the return to the Mark Leyner I know and love with himself as the protagonist. What surprised me was how fucking good his mother's section was. How affecting it was and how much it added to the book. Probably the best new book I got in 2016.
8. Et Tu, Babe by Mark Leyner (March 19): Still one of my favourites... always.
9. My Cousin, My Gastroenterologist by Mark Leyner (April 10): So hit and miss. You have to find a lot in the small moments and sentences. I'm not sure if this has aged well.
10. Launching a Leadership Revolution: Developing Yourself and Others Through the Art and Science of Leadership by Chris Brady and Orrin Woodward (May 3): This year, I began a leadership development program at work. It's a two-year thing and one of the homework assignment is reading books. This was the first that I picked and it was a good place to start. It was very hit or miss with regards to things you probably already knew. But, kind of like what I said about Bendis's book last year: it's good to have it all in one place. Plus, there were some things that I learned.
11. Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success by Phil Jackson and Hugh Delehanty (May 8): I bought this to contribute to the leadership program's library. As my company/industry is, in many ways, female-dominated, I saw a lot of "woman's rise to the top of business in a man's world" type of books available and, hey, that's great, but I wanted something that seemed a bit more like a book I would choose to read. I also thought about the sort of leaders that I respect and anyone who can make a pro sports team with all of the egos and money and shit work -- 11 times! -- is someone I was interested in hearing from. My biggest takeaway is that coaches have one advantage: the shared goal. All of the players want the championship and I've been struggling to carry that over to my profession where there is no inherent goal like that. But, it's a good book.
12. Your Favorite Band is Killing Me: What Pop Music Rivalries Reveal about the Meaning of Life by Steven Hyden (May 29): Such a fun read. I love stuff like this. I can't wait for Hyden's next book. He fills a bit of a void that Klosterman has left as he's moved, with each book, to more high concepts and less about specific popculture. Not that that's a bad thing... it just leaves a void and I'm glad someone with Hyden's talent and smarts is able to fill it.
13. But What If We’re Wrong? Thinking About the Present As If It Were the Past by Chuck Klosterman (June 22): Speaking of which... A really interesting read that goes in some unexpected directions. I'm not sure it carries as strongly through the finish, sometimes becoming a little repetitive. Some chapters really had me going...
14. Imperial Bedrooms by Bret Easton Ellis (August 18): A spur of the moment reread. No new thoughts really.
15. Predators by Jim Starlin and Daina Graziunas (August 27): This took forever to read. Lots of putting it down to read other things. It's an odd book that feels like book five in a series about this telepathic hunter of serial killers. The plot doesn't go anywhere you'd expect. Not as good as their first novel; way better than their second.
16. Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman by Haruki Murakami (September 18): My first time rereading this completely since it first came out. I'd reread some stories here and there over the years, but never the whole thing. I love the simplicity of his stories. And the variety.
17. Wicked and Weird: The Amazing Tales of Buck 65 by Rich Terfry (September 24): Picked this up from the bargin table. It was $4-$6. Not sure what exactly. The first two-thirds are great; entertaining and engaging. The final third just goes off the rails. I wish he'd make another album.
18. Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami (September 24): Another that I hadn't reread in a while. Not sure what I think about it.
19. What I Talk about When I Talk about Running by Haruki Murakami (October 2): I got the mind to read this after different people in the leadership program talked about running. I was also gearing up for the new Murakami book and the two seemed to intersect.
20. The Greatest Albums You’ll Never Hear: Unreleased Records by the World’s Greatest Artists edited by Bruno MacDonald (November 6): Informative in places. Books like this suffer a bit, because, if you know about a musician well, then you probably know about the album(s) discussed and learn little new. If you don't know about a musician a lot, then you learn lots, but don't necessarily care. Good book for what it is.
21. Absolutely on Music by Haruki Murakami and Seiji Ozawa (November 28): I'm surprised at how much I liked this. It definitely put me in the mind to want to listen to this type of music. My only complaint is that they didn't touch on topics I would have liked them to (orchestras playing with rock bands, for example), but that's not a fair criticism at all. This was two guys having some conversations with a purpose, but also because they enjoyed it.
22. Who Moved My Cheese? By Spencer Johnson (November 29): Another leadership book. It was alright. I read it while Ryan napped. It took half an hour.
23. Normal by Warren Ellis (December 3): Depressing and fun. I read this in one shot on a Saturday with the house empty. Ellis probably could have gotten more of the concept, but why push it? The brief flirtation with the campers take over the corrupt camp plot was fun. The final revelation is slightly disappointing at first, but it stayed with me. It sunk in a bit. Hmm...
24. Triggers by Marshall Goldsmith (December 5): Another leadership book. I really liked this one and have been working to implement some of its concepts into my daily life.
And that's it. I've finished one book in 2017 already.

Insurance payments and credit?
A friend of mine says she likes to pay her car insurance in monthly installments (as opposed to in bulk every 6 months) because it helps her credit. I've never heard of this. I told her that she would save money if she paid it all at once (because the insurance company offers a discount for paying in full), but she said paying the extra money was worth the benefit to her credit. She doesn't have credit cards or loans or any type of revolving credit. Is she correct that paying in monthly installments helps her credit?""

I was driving 79(the cop said this, i realy was not going this fast) in a 50 and got a ticket for that. I have a provisional license(I am 17) and had a total of 2 passengers who were not supposed to be in the car(including myself there were 4 people in the car). I also did not have the red sticker on my car. I live in New Jersey. This is my first offense. How much will my insurance rise? I get 4 points for the speeding, and i do not believe any others because points are for moving violations. 220$ for speeding, I believe 100$ for the red sticker, and I have no idea for the extra two people. Car Insurance for 4 months?
Hi guys, I'm back with my parents for about 4 months, and I would like to drive the car. To do this, obviously I need to have insurance activated (secondary driver). They are saying that they need to charge me for a year that. Saying that I might come home and drive the car. Meaning, for 8 months I would be paying for nothing. Because I'll be in another city, not even close to the car. 1) If I did come home, I wouldn't drive the car without insurance 2) I don't even come home during the school year, and there is a chance that I won't come home for the summer Do I have any grounds on this? I think the insurance salesperson just wants to gouge money.""

How can I lower my auto insurance?
I am 20 years old. I live in Florida which is by far the WORST states to have auto insurance. I've only been in 2 accidents, both not my fault. One was a small fender bender (which my friend decided to get a PIP claim even though he didnt get hurt so he could snag some money from the government). The other i totaled my car, but that was over 2 YEARS AGO. This is a no fault state which sucks because both of them werent my fault!!!!! Currently my auto insurance is 253 dollars! I'm a college student and i CANNOT afford that, but thats the cheapest one I found. Geico and all the popular ones wont even look at me. And it also adds on the my mom was in an accident (also not at fault) she got hit from behind at a red light and of course they penalized her for that too. Florida is a fraud state, they penalize you for everything when its no fault. Does anyone know how i can lower my auto insurance? It's been 2 years since I totaled my car and almost 2 and a half 3 years from the small fender bender. I also got a small speeding ticket from maybe september or december of last year, but thats it. no other tickets. thanks!""

Why is classic car insurance more?
For a teen I mean. I know these types of cars need special insurance companies but these special companies don't take 18 year old drivers. I'm currently parting out a 76 camaro with a tired 250 v6 so it's not fast in any ways. Though it is still called a sports coupe . so I was curious and got a quote and they quoted me $550 a month. strange thing is my friend drives an 04 rsx that's standard (the camaro is auto) and pays the same rate monthly under his parents. What are the factors that determine these rates? safety? engine size? the amount of damage they do? I had a 03 civic coupe (standard) briefly and was paying $260 a month under my parents insurance. According to the insurance company, all these cars are considered sports cars and therefore have higher rates however they would not tell me the reasons why and that is what I am here to ask.""

Who thinks the health insurance waivers means that companies don't have to provide health insurance?
You'd be wrong. Care to understand why? http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2010/12/10/truth-about-health-care-waivers The bad news is that today mini-meds are often the only affordable option for many low-wage workers because retail and chain restaurants rarely offer their workers options beyond these plans. And because mini-meds are built around annual limits, estimates from employers and insurers indicate that beginning the phase out of annual limits this year would cause mini-med premiums to rise by more than 200 percent, forcing employers to drop coverage and sending many low-wage workers to purchase insurance on the more expensive individual insurance market, where they would get an even worse deal than what they have today. The result would be a whole new population of uninsured Americans. To ensure that we protect the coverage that these workers have today until better options are available for them in 2014, the law allows HHS, in extreme cases, to issue temporary waivers from the phase out of annual limits. There are some important facts to remember about these temporary waivers: The waivers only apply to one provision of the law the provisions phasing out annual limits. Insurance companies and employers that receive waivers must comply with all other parts of the Affordable Care Act. The waivers last one year. Insurance companies must reapply for the waivers each year between now and 2014 when annual limits on coverage will be completely prohibited and individuals will have more affordable and better private insurance choices in the competitive Exchange markets. All employers and insurers that offer mini-med plans may apply for a waiver if they demonstrate that there will be large increases in premiums or a significant decrease in access to coverage without a waiver. You can read a list of employers and insurers that have received waivers here.""

Life insurance: Which would you pick?
Scenario: 30 year old purchasing a $250,000 policy. Would you buy: A) Whole life insurance that cost $3100/year. By age 65, you will have $60,000 in the cash value. B) 35 year term that cost $1500/year. If you invest the difference of $133.33/month with a rate of return of 12%, you can have $866,000. Or even at a conservative rate of 10%, you can have $510,000. Can I sell my own shipping insurance?

Is this legal since I am not a real insurance company? If it's not legal how do I have to word it so I can charge like $5 and handle shipping damage myself?

How much would getting a cast cost me in the US with and without insurance?
I'm a US citizen studying in Canada. Sunday, I fractured my wrist playing football. I saw a sports medicine doctor on Monday, who sent me for x-rays and informed me I had a fracture. He told me to go to the hospital to get a proper cast. The fracture clinic there had closed for the day so I went to the ER, where they wrapped me up and took another x-ray. I saw an orthopedic specialist this morning who set my fracture (ideally I should have come in immediately after the incident and had it set then), after which they took another set of x-rays to check if the setting worked. The prognosis is good. I didn't pay a cent in all this, as I'm covered under the University Health Insurance Plan, which all international students in Ontario get, as the Ontario Health Insurance Plan only covers residents, anything under OHIP is covered with UHIP. I'm curious, what would the cost have been had this happened in the US, with and without insurance? Thank You""

malcolm is actually very interesting, in what little we see of him, though.
like, it would be so easy to write him as just straightforwardly cold and severe. like the mage but without even the intense charisma or interesting backstory to go with it.
but instead it’s made clear that malcolm is a) human and b) likeable.
malcolm does his best to charm penny and agatha, and it might not exactly work on either of them (bc they’re cynics with a prejudice against the pitches), but... it almost works on simon. like, maybe it would, if it were directed at him. he doesn’t see anything terribly sinister in it at that point, just politeness - only later, when he’s alone with the pitches, does he start talking about not knowing what’s going on behind their eyes.
and baz... baz is definitely nervous around malcolm when it comes to emotional vulnerability. but the fear of outright rejection is buried pretty deep. on the surface, almost all of it is about a positive desire to impress him. to be like him. like, he genuinely admires him in many ways - particularly his elegance and self-control - and is proud of himself when he feels like he’s managing the same.
being a grimm/pitch is like being in a secret club. baz gets to see past the outward charm to the more honest cool aloofness, and that feels like intimacy, even though there’s still no vulnerability happening. it’s a different kind of charm, where they can all convince each other that their family just doesn’t do vulnerability. they don’t need it.
(he gets to know their secrets without even being told. that’s fucking weird and he knows it, but he still feels proud.)
but anyway - i don’t think malcolm is thinking of this in calculated terms. it’s all about protecting family dignity and secrecy and so on, but like... it *is* extremely important for baz to be able to keep a secret, to be charming, to have a good poker face. he’s not just protecting the family, these are survival skills for him. it’s not wrong to teach them.
what is wrong is that they’ve been taught indirectly, with the threat of shame/rejection as part of the teaching process, and that there is never a moment where these walls can come down.
but those are malcolm’s own neuroses at work. there’s an element of perfectionism to it - surely these skills will be more fully developed if he can just infer them without being told, no-one ever had to be told in my day - but also just straightforward fear. he’s given baz a mask and it’s been so long that he doesn’t want to know what’s underneath. i don’t think he actually believes the worst of baz, but... maybe he fears it? he knows he’s taught these skills well, and that he might well just not know if baz were not at all the kind of person he wants him to. he’s taught baz to hide from everyone to protect him, and now he’s uncomfortable because he’s realised “everyone” includes him.
#carry on reread september 21#hmm this ramble is just doing whatever it likes it seems. idc this is an interesting path to think about#malcolm grimm#baz pitch

Hello 2018 // Resolutions and Challenges
Happy New Year! It’s time to once again set our selves resolutions to inevitably break within the first few days of the year and challenges we will wither smash or forget about within days. I always end up forgetting about my challenges and resolutions and I always try and do a mad rush at the end of the year which always fails. I often question why I even bother. In fact, I never used to bother with resolutions because I knew they would never last.
It may sound like I don’t like the start of a new year but even though it is but an arbitrary method to track the passage of time there is something so lovely about that start of a new year. It holds so much potential, there are so many possibilities of how the next year will go. It may not always be a good year but I love the feeling that you can begin afresh and try and improve. And if all else fails I also treat September like a fresh start so I’ve got 9 months before I can attempt to set myself back on track for the end of the year.
2018 Resolutions
I may not have always been a fan of resolutions but I have a handful of bookish/blogging ones I wish to try and achieve.
Request fewer ARCs! – The continual theme of the end of 2017, for me, was complaining how behind in my ARC reading I was. I may have reached the elusive 80% response rate on Netgalley but I still have so many ARCs to read and a lot were for the middle to end of last year.2018 will be the year of me only requesting the books I really, really want to read. No more maybe reads or pretty cover requests for me (probably).
Buy fewer books! – I buy a lot of books and I don’t apologise for that fact. I am good at finding good deals and spending wisely (most of the time) but I have so many unread books that buying more feels hard to justify. I have no specific plan in place so this resolution is probably doomed to fail but I want to try and stop my gains from exceeding the books which I have read. I would be happy with breaking even at this point.
Stop apologising so much! – I apologise a lot to you guys on this blog. When I get busy, when I don’t post, when I don’t reply. There are apologies for the most ridiculous reason but no more! I want to apologise less when it’s beyond my control. I’m allowed to have a life outside this very fun hobby so it's ok.
Bring back posts I like on the blog! – So I realised I haven’t done a ‘Five Reasons to…’ post in a good long while and there are other little features and posts I haven’t done because they seemed like too much effort or I thought about it but never got around to so I am going to try and do the posts I like and not the ones which are easy.
Remember to post reviews on Amazon and Goodreads! – I am good at posting reviews on Goodreads but less good about making sure I put them up on places like Amazon but I am determined to try and get reviews up on those places once a week because this helps support authors too!
I don’t know about you guys but I feel like these are achievable aims. I’m not overreaching they are just good things to try. Will I succeed? Well… that’s a whole other question.
2018 Challenges
I always like to take part in a few challenges but I don’t want to do too many and overstretch myself. This year I may have chosen to do many but I am hoping I can cross books over for some challenges. Apart from the Discussion Challenge they are all reading based challenges and all should have some crossover (I hope).
2018 Discussion Challenge
This is my favourite blogging challenge which I take part in every year. I’ve done it for the past two, I think. It helps encourage me to write discussion posts which are always great and actually get a conversation going with you guys. It’s hosted by Nicole at Feed Your Fiction Addiction and Shannon at It Starts At Midnight. They are both great hosts and I love the link up to see all the discussions folks are posting.
My aim is to be a Chatty Kathy which is 21 to 30 posts. Over the space of a year that should (hopefully) be achievable. I want to try and get two posts up a month which I (might) be able to do.
Monthly Motif Reading Challenge
This is a challenge I stumbled across completely by accident but it looked interesting. It is simply a book a month I am attempting to read and that is totally manageable. And a lot of the monthly themes seem like ones I would actually be able to read anyway.
JANUARY – Diversify Your Reading Kick the reading year off right and shake things up. Read a book with a character (or written by an author) of a race, religion, or sexual orientation other than your own.
FEBRUARY – One WordRead a book with a one-word title.
MARCH – Travel the World Read a book set in a different country than your own, written by an author from another country than your own, or a book in which the characters travel.
APRIL – Read Locally Read a book set in your country, state, town, village (or has a main character from your hometown, country, etc)
MAY- Book to Screen Read a book that’s been made into a movie or a TV show.
JUNE- Crack the Case Mysteries, True Crime, Who Dunnit’s.
JULY – Vacation Reads Read a book you think is a perfect vacation read and tell us why.
AUGUST- Award WinnersRead a book that has won a literary award or a book written by an author who has been recognized in the bookish community.
SEPTEMBER- Don’t Turn Out The Light Cozy mystery ghost stories, paranormal creeptastic, horror novels.
OCTOBER- New or Old Choose a new release from 2018 or a book known as a classic.
NOVEMBER- Family Books where family dynamics play a big role in the story
DECEMBER- Wrapping It Up Winter or holiday-themed books or books with snow, ice, etc in the title or books set in winter OR read a book with a theme from any of the months in this challenge (could be a theme you didn’t do or one you want to do again).
2018 Romance Roundabout Challenge
This is another one I stumbled across. I was searching for a romance based reading challenge but most of them didn’t seem all that challenging. Like the Contemporary Romance one, or it was too challenging. This one has a set number of categories and I can make it as easy or hard as I like. This is a GoodReads based reading challenge which I don’t love but it is a really cool challenge so I’m not letting GoodReads put me off as it’s a site I should probably utilise as more than just as a way to track my reading.
I am just going to be a ‘dabbler’ on this one and aim for one book per sub-genre. Do read more than one romance book a year to fit into these genres? Of course, I do but as soon as a set a target for myself we all know I’m going to fail epically.
Paranormal Romance
Urban Fantasy
Young Adult (fantasy or contemporary both qualify)
New Adult
Erotic Romance
Sci-Fi (can be romance or straight sci-fi)
Historical Romance
Steampunk
Contemporary Romance
Romantic Suspense
LGBT Romance
Fantasy (not to be confused with paranormal romance!)
Mystery (not romance focused, can be cosy mystery or thrillers)
2018 Beat The Backlist
I also plan to participate in this Backlist books challenge because I have a lot of backlist books to read and a challenge which utilises teams and points as a method to encourage you to read is always good (and this way I can combine my other challenges into this one too).
I aim to read 50 books for this challenge. I will be in the team Story Sorcerers so fingers crossed with do well!
Personal Reading Challenge
And (finally) there is my own personal reading challenge which I have created for myself to try and beat the mountain of unread books I own. This is a challenge of my own making created specifically for me and the many books I have bought. You can feel free to use (and adapt it) for yourself but it’s going to work for me.
A book I bought because of Nick.
A book I bought because of Danya.
A book I bought because of a Smart Bitches podcast.
A book I bought (and avoided) due to the hype.
A book I bought for the author.
A book I bought for the cover.
A book from a subscription box which I’ve not read.
A highly anticipated book I’ve just not read.
A book I was excited to read until a bad review put me off.
A sequel to a book I’ve loved but not read as I want to reread the first book.
A physical book with an ugly cover.
An ebook with an ugly/embarrassing cover.
A big ass physical book I’ve put off reading as I don’t want to carry it about.
A book I bought because an author mentioned it.
Any book off of my last chance pile (those books which get one more chance before they go to the charity pile).
What challenges are you participating in this year? Do you have any resolutions for the year or are you just going to take it as it comes?

Collecting a list of characters other than Simon who acknowledge the real possibility of Baz Plotting to fight the rampant Plotting!Baz erasure in this fandom. So far I have:
Penny ("I'm pretty sure Baz has [sworn an oath against Simon]")
Agatha ("Would I have to be evil? Slip poison into people's drinks? Cast dark spells?")
Ebb (“He tried to kill me.” “Not successfully.”)
Miss Possibelf ("Maybe he is off planning something awful; I hope not, for his sake and yours.")
Malcolm ("He - Father - pulled me aside after dinner and asked if I wanted him call in the Families for assistance. "No," I said... Father practically winked.")
Dev and Niall (”Dev said I wasted their entire childhood plotting against Simon”)
The Mage (Anything he says about "the Pitches")
Fiona (Has actually canonically plotted with Baz)
Aren’t you tired of trying to chalk ALL of this up to Simon being paranoid? This boy has done VILLAINY. And his villainy, like Simon’s heroics, is probably only touched on within the pages of Carry On. Think of the possibilities. It’s so much more fun if you embrace it.
#baz pitch#carry on#carry on reread september 21#Let Baz Plot 2k21#relatedly i HATE the idea that baz was unaware of simon's quests#as if he wouldn't try to sabotage and/or get dragged into at least half of them#how is the boy meant to plot without a little surveillance and sabotage now and then#am i really expected to believe that the stalking was entirely one sided for seven entire years#like SIMON'S the chosen one. his stalking of baz was a reaction if anything#baz is probably the one who gets saddled with helping simon while his arm's in a sling. ANYWAY. They Are Roommates.#am i supposed to believe he didn't at very least demand answers for why simon was trailing blood everywhere

oh boy.
1. the year natasha died, malcolm forgot christmas. if she'd died close to christmas this would be unremarkable - but this is half a year later. i'm not saying he should have Got Over It - but i do think, by that point... someone should have been reminding him, at least. he should have found a coping strategy to protect baz. if he can't think about baz's emotional needs then SOMEONE SHOULD BE. (yes, fiona - but she's fixing the situation later rather than anticipating it.) this only makes me wonder what else he forgot.
(1.5. this may be the point at which fiona moved in, i guess. that's smthn but the damage has been done.)
2. this sudden loss of affection is directly tied to the development of baz's guilt complex. and baz skips christmas 2015 to fight the war. bad habits ingrained.
3. if you, like me, headcanon that natasha is called that because she was born on christmas... all of this gets more understandable and infinitely sadder

is it canon no but i have always understood that bit where malcolm is being all hostly and polite towards penny and agatha and baz keeps rolling his eyes to mean that malcolm is doing his very best to set up baz with one of them
